Chapter 2: Intimacy and Exposure

By mid afternoon, you and Megumi are both exhausted with your full course load. You both major in biology, no emphasis right now. Megumi loves animals, so he will probably pursue something veterinary later. As for you, you’re undecided. You chose biology because it’s very general and broad, and also so you could be with Megumi more. You would never tell him that, though. You just say “idk maybe some science-y crap” and shrug it off.

You weren’t able to get lunch, so you both decide to visit a coffee shop after your last class of the day. A snack and some caffeine would help get you through for a while until you decide what you want to eat that night.

Megumi orders his usual black cold brew and muffin. The barista asks how to spell his name, and giggles? Is she flirting with him?

“That’s a cute name…” She says as she writes it down on his cup. “And for you…?” She barely glances at you.

You’re not sure how you feel in that moment. Was she flirting with Gumi? Am I jealous? Why is my heart racing?

Sitting around the table, you both have your laptops and books out in front of you. It’s been a couple hours of studying, and you’re ready to take a break.

You choose some random comedy show, not caring to pay any attention. You just wanted a chance to rest and turn your brain off for a while.

Why do you write Steddie?

Why do any of us write anything? Because we want the story to exist in the world, and it doesn’t yet, so we gotta hike up our pants and do it ourselves!

What’s your favorite trope to READ?

Hurt/Comfort. I’m always a sucker for the blorbos taking care of one another, in whatever form that takes. This has always been true, across a truly astronomical number of fandoms I’ve found myself dabbling in over the years.

What’s your favorite trope to WRITE?

…actually, probably hurt/comfort! I just need to get those little dudes some validation and unconditional positive regard, okay?

What’s your favorite Steddie fic?

I’m sure I won’t be the first one to say this, but: I HAVE TO PICK ONE????? Okay, alright. I can do this. I’m gonna say…Sanctuary by SpicedSage.

Is there a trope you’re excited to explore in a future work but haven’t yet?

I’ve only written canon or canon-adjacent fic so far, so I’m eager to work on something that’s completely AU. I think there’s a unique challenge to keeping characters recognizable as themselves in a world that might not have all the same contexts that made them into that person.

What is your writing process like?

I would love to say it’s super organized and well-planned, but the truth is it’s mostly about routine and responsibility. I set aside time to do it every day, even if I can only tap out a few sentences. I’m not very strict about writing in a straight line - I can stop a scene if it’s giving me trouble, write a note about what I think happens in some [brackets], and move on to something that I have more fully fleshed-out ideas for. Sometimes writing the next scene helps you know more about what needs to happen in the current one. 

Do you have any writing quirks?

I'm sure my betas would say yes 🙃 I tend to write a lot of dialogue - a lot of my revision process is going back through and realizing I have two pages of a conversation with no indication of what’s physically happening in the world around the speakers.

Do you prefer posting when you’ve finished writing or on a schedule?

Definitely when I’m finished. Prior to my ‘23 bang fic, I had never written anything chaptered. I knew going in that I could NOT start posting if it wasn’t finished, because I’ve been burned too many times by abandoned works. I didn’t want to do that to people reading my fic, and the best way to avoid it is to finish before you post.

Which fic are you most proud of?

Easily start by pulling him out of the fire. The biggest, most ambitious thing I’ve ever attempted - I still kind of can’t believe I wrote 85k.

How did you get the idea for start by pulling him out of the fire?

Like most terrible ideas, it was spawned in a fandom discord chat. We were discussing the tendency of Steddie fics to centralize the party at Steve’s house, because his parents are never there anyway. And then someone mentioned what if the parents came home and found their house occupied, and someone else mentioned Wayne being there, and it just sort of…spiraled out from there.

When writing start by pulling him out of the fire, what was something you didn’t expect?

I had no idea, going in, that I was going to write a comprehensive history of the Wayne and Eddie Munson relationship. I started writing it where I did to give some background on Wayne’s existing distaste for the elder Harrington, and then I just…kept writing. Over the course of a month or two I wrote 20k of WayneAndEddie that I had no idea was in me - it just kept coming.

What inspired it's supposed to be fun (turning twenty-one)?

@wynnyfryd. It was a gift for her birthday. We were talking about our mutual love of Letterkenny, and she mentioned that the episode was her favorite and wouldn’t it be funny if someone wrote… and the rest is history.

What was your favorite part to write from it's supposed to be fun (turning twenty-one)?

I had an unreasonable amount of fun with that one in general. But I think my favorite part was Eddie polling the party about what Steve means to them all. It was fun to sort of put myself in each character’s shoes and think about how they would answer. Plus y’know, any excuse to unironically love on Steve Harrington.

How do/did you feel writing so let's sneak in from the cheap seats, honey?

I believe my exact words upon deciding to write it were “jingles miserably to a blank google doc.” This was a classic case of saying “god I wish there was a fic where—” and having friends tell me that it was now my responsibility to write it. I’m glad I did, though. I love that story, and it proved to me that I could write sex and publish it and not burst into flames. I also just really, really love summer storms. And Wayne’s use of the singular ‘herpe.’

What was the most difficult part of writing so let's sneak in from the cheap seats honey?

Getting over the fear of publishing something E-rated. It was just something I hadn’t done, and I had a lot of anxiety that people were not going to respond well to it. I made three people individually review the sex scenes before I even asked anyone to beta the full fic. Of course I was worried for nothing, the reception for that fic was super lovely and gave me the confidence boost I needed to attempt start by pulling him out of the fire!

Do you have a favorite scene and/or line from any of your fics?

This is like asking me to pick a favorite child. I’ll say this: most of my favorite lines in start by pulling him out of the fire were taken directly from conversations @wormdebut and I had about the fic. She’s my number one cheerleader and sounding board, and sometimes she’s so goddamn funny that I just have to include it. You have her to thank, for instance, for Steve quite literally dropping his croissant when he first sees Eddie in glasses.

Do you have any upcoming projects or fics you’d like to share/promote?

I have a couple of irons in the fire, but nothing I’m ready to share just yet! I’ve been taking a breather from writing (blame baldur’s gate 3, okay) but my WIPs are still very much IP. Stay tuned!

Outside of these questions, Is there anything YOU would like to add?

You and Lana - your best friend and roommate - have just arrived at one of the biggest college parties of the year. Even though you were hesitant to go initially, she convinced you to trade in your book for a few drinks and a fun night. It wasn't without the promise of your crush being there, but now you're glad you have decided to go.

"Let's get some drinks, shall we?" Lana asks as she grabs your hand, not waiting for your answer. She pulls you into the kitchen, where all the bottles and cups are strewn on the counters. She puts a red cup into your hands, and you turn around to grab a bottle of rum and Coca-Cola.

As soon as you put the bottle of rum down, you feel a pair of big, strong hands on your waist, making you smile widely. Before the person says anything, you can smell their cologne, feel their breath ghosting over your neck, and feel their long, thick fingers gently squeezing your waist.

"There should be cops around there, Gorgeous, because it's illegal for you to look this beautiful tonight," the person behind you tells you in their deep voice, and the goosebumps in your neck show how much you're enjoying their voice. You turn around and look into the deep, dark brown eyes of the man you've had a crush on since you first laid eyes on him.

"Hi, Robert," you tell him before wrapping your arms around his neck, pulling him into a hug that he happily reciprocates. You're a little reluctant to move away from the warmth of his body, but you do it eventually, taking a small sniff of his cologne in the process. When you are standing in front of him, he can fully take in your outfit, and you're glad that Lana helped you to pick it out.

"What're you having?" he asks as a smile tugs on the corners of his lips, the butterflies in both your stomachs going crazy. It is evident to everyone around you that you have feelings for one another, but your friendship is much too important to give into those for both of you. The sexual tension is thick enough to cut with a knife, but it never goes any further than flirting and innocent touches.

"The usual, what about you?" you ask as you pick up the bottle of Coca-Cola in front of you, pour it into the cup, and hand it to Robert as you both usually drink the same. The second cup is quickly made before you follow Robert outside, and you take the time to take in his outfit.

He's decided to wear his leather jacket, which is starting to get some wear and tear from all the times he's worn it, and the few times he's lent it to you, you could smell his cologne in it, and the warmth of him enveloped you completely, making you feel like you're on cloud nine.

The moment you step outside, you feel the air hitting your face, and it calms down your body a little as it was pretty heated from when Robert laid his hands on your waist. Taking a few deep breaths, you follow Robert out, only to discover one seat left. Robert takes a seat, tapping his thigh to instruct you to sit down, the corner of his mouth curled up into a mischievous smirk.

"C'mere, Gorgeous, I saved the best seat of the party just for you," he says with a slight rumble to his voice, and the heat you felt earlier is back, but only ten times worse. You walk over to him, however, stepping between his thighs and making yourself comfortable on his lap, his arm protectively wrapped around your back, his fingers digging softly into your side.

Robert keeps whispering sweet nothings into your ear, and you giggle softly. To everyone who glances your way, it looks like any other couple enjoying time together, but nothing could be further from the truth. Just when you're about to tell him you're getting cold, Lana comes running outside to greet you.

"Babe, come on! We're playing Spin the Bottle, so you and Robert must join!" she says excitedly, bouncing back and forth on her feet as she waits for the two of you to get up and join her inside. You give Robert a look of ''why not?" and not long after, you're sitting amongst the other people who have joined, most of whom you don't know, but that's fine.

Robert is sitting on your left, his knee touching yours as you're both cross-legged on the floor, and Lana is sitting on your right side with another drink in her hand. You're still on your first as you never drink much, but it's clear most other people at the party are already starting to get tipsy or are very drunk.

You're one of the last people to be spinning the bottle, though it has landed on you a few times, and you have given out many short pecks to both boys and girls, usually followed by some awkward laughter.

Now, it's your turn to spin the bottle, and you lean forward to spin it, the bottle turning quite a few times as your heart starts beating faster as the glass slows down. Much to your surprise, it lands on someone you've daydreamed about kissing many times, his plump, pink lips often being the topic of your dreams. Robert.

One look over at Robert reveals that he's excited it landed on him, and he stands up swiftly, his hand stretched out for yours. "What do you say, Gorgeous? Shall we make it a night to never forget?"

Before you know it, you're standing before Robert, closer than ever. His chest is touching yours, and his long fingers and large hands are cupping your cheeks ever so gently as his eyes flick from your eyes to your lips and back as if he's giving you one last way out.

You don't take it as you lean forward, your hands wrapped loosely around his neck as your lips touch his for the first time. Your fingers slide into the hair on the nape of his neck, pulling him impossibly closer as your lips glide together effortlessly. As if they'd done this a thousand times before.

His tongue swipes over your bottom lip to ask for access, which you happily grant, your tongues gliding together effortlessly as you taste the rum and coke, as well as something so distinctly Robert, and it has you drunk on his taste. Not in the same way as alcohol makes you feel, but different in the best possible way. He makes you feel like you're floating, and you never want to come down.

Robert's fingers have slid into your hair, gripping it gently as his lips move in unison with yours, never wanting the kiss to end. Every second together has led up to this point, and now that you've had your slice of heaven, you never want anything else. As you pull yourself away from his lips, you look up at Robert, who's smiling broadly at you.

"God, I can't believe we didn't do that sooner," you whisper to him, and he nods in response.

"What do you say, shall we leave and continue what we started? I don't think I'll ever get enough of your lips, Gorgeous," Robert tells you, and you nod in response before turning to Lana, who shoots you an approving wink. You decide to text her later, but right now, all you want is Robert and to be wrapped up in his arms.

Robert took you to his apartment because he lives alone, meaning you won't get interrupted at night. When the door swings open, Robert lets you walk in first, and you take in his apartment. 2. what’s your total ao3 word count?

Word Count: 764,847

And what I would like to say, is that I started writing in the summer of 2022, so pretty much exactly two years ago, and deleted one longfic when I decided I hated it, so my point is, that is an average of more than 1,000 words a day published, and I have a shit ton of unpublished stuff.

Is my math possibly close on this? Holy shit, I talk a lot, and don't worry, I do have an actual diagnosis for my mental health problems, not that it helps all that much, but hahahahaha, doing great.

3. what fandoms do you write for?

Captain America, though a lot of Marvel sneaks in around the edges.

Wandavision, Hawkeye (more the show and comics than the Avenger's movies version of Clint) and Black Widow in particular. I am interested in writing diverse stories which has me pulling from the more recent content for women, queer folks, and people of color to include. I do see the irony of hyper-fixating on two white males for literally years and nearly a million words and then complaining about lack of diversity. Let's talk about it.

4. do you respond to comments? why or why not?

I do, meticulously and with great joy. BUT.

When I first started writing I had no idea what to do with comments. They made me happy and thrilled, but also very stressed about social etiquette. I would rarely reply. At one point I saw an anon asking on Tumblr if the author was mad at them for commenting because they commented on every chapter of a work in progress without hearing anything back. I honestly had never thought about it from that perspective, so I starting replying, and it got easier with practice. I have gotten into my own groove and I enjoy it now.

I think if it stresses authors out, no pressure. It actually does take up a chunk of time, especially on my more popular fics or if a chapter is particularly exciting/has a cliff hanger, etc. I really enjoy doing it, so I don't mind at all, and if it ever feels like a TASK I don't pressure myself to reply, because I find if I wait a few days it brings me joy again.

5. have you ever had a fic stolen?

No, I have collaborated with artists through Bangs though which is super neat!

7. what’s your all-time favourite ship?

Look the obvious answer is Stucky.

I think one of my first pairings was Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker, but in that pairing I was a stand in for Luke Skywalker and Mara was too cool for both of us but also imprinted on my developing brain.
