After his victory in the War of the Five Kings, Robb Stark threw the tourney of 300 AC in Winterfell in celebration. Tourneys were previously not part of Northern tradition, but with the Riverlands and Vale of Arryn swearing fealty and becoming part of the North, Robb thought it best to show he was embracing their cultures as well. However, in honor of his late lord father’s personal convictions, Robb did not himself compete but rather merely hosted. He gave his favor to Theon Greyjoy, whom he held a certain affection for, by placing his crown upon his head (Lady Catelyn was aghast) and gave him to honor of jousting in his name.
commission by @sofikiii
Throbb Throbb Throbb Throbb Throbb Throbb
What if… you had a best friend… and she said “let me draw throbb for you”, wyd then? Thank you so so so much to sofia for doing this for me ^_^ I recommend everyone ever to commission her because she is so accommodating and hard working but more than anything else, she can easily capture the vision of what you’re describing.
I’m always so so so proud of both the artist for bringing my ideas to fruition, but also to a lesser degree myself for my designs bc I am always involved in basically every detail in every commission I pay for. I will say that Robb’s outfit was entirely sofia’s idea and I think it’s one of the better designs I’ve seen for Robb’s clothing ever :)). I was involved however, with all things Theon (as always, no surprise here). From his lance to his outfit. It’s all so Theon to me and I’m so grateful to sofia for listening to my pages and pages of meticulous text and references and how to depict Theon (ts is serious). He is so smug to get that crown but even more smug that he received that smile from Robb that he’s been frothing at the mouth for. Too smug to ask himself “is it gay to receive a man’s favor and getting what equates to an overly glorified kerchief?”
Mayhaps I will some day expand on this tourney because Robert Arryn threw the biggest tantrum of all time wanting to compete in the tourney, so Robb threw a mini one as well for Sweetrobin, Bran, Jojen, and Lyanna Mormont. Sweetrobin fell off his pony and had a stress induced seizure so that one had to be cancelled, but I would like to show everyone those four and their ponies one day.

Why is the fact that theon got confused with his identity of being a stark or a greyjoy a big deal to other characters ....he was a child right(I dont literally mean a child but in terms if being inexperienced) so why such a big deal even till the end of the series!?
Well personally I think D&D kind of flubbed this aspect, but essentially GoT’s argument is that because the Starks were such a wonderful family, Theon was basically lucky to be abducted and held hostage from childhood until adulthood. Unsurprisingly, in the books this is far more complex and he’s honestly not at all in the wrong for being so traumatized by being a permanent captive of House Stark and the crown.

The Legends of the Battle of Winterfell
Just think about how, amidst all the sorrow and loss and suffering of the Battle of Winterfell, so many new songs and stories were born that night. Legends that rose from the ashes and the rubble, that will go down in Westerosi history and that every child will know, just like the tales of Bran the Builder and Nymeria of Ny Sar and Aemon the Dragon Night…
Lyanna Mormont, the Giant Slayer. The last of the brave and bold and beautiful She-Bears of Bear Island. Who asked no one’s permission and would let no man fight for her. Who never ran and hid, who refused to sit idly by, who always answered the call. Who was fearless in the face of fear itself. Who lived a legacy and died a legend. The smallest of small who slain the tallest of all. And though she be but little, she was fierce.
Theon Greyjoy, the Ironborn. The Kraken who climbed out of the darkness of the depths of the sea to bid a brave farewell to the land he called home. The man who lived long enough to see himself become a villain, but decided he would write the ending of his own story, and die a hero instead. Who gave his life to protect a boy that was his brother in every thing but name. A good man who is gone but whose memory will go on forever, what is dead my never die.
Jorah Mormont, the Andal. The Prodigal Son, who returned home with the wind at his back and fire in his heart. Who defended his beloved queen with his very last breath. He was lost until she found him and he would be lost with out her. He was the strength in her heart as she was the light in his darkness, and he would never lose her again. Here we stand had been his words in another life time when he was another man. But it was here, in the lands of winter, that he made his last stand. Here he bravely stood and fought until he could stand no longer.
Eddison Tollet, the Last Lord Commander Crow. He was watcher on The Wall, a shield that guarded the realms of men. Who would bear no sons and have no wives, but would have a band of black brothers instead. The fearless leader of the most unlikely of heroes. Who died as he told his friend to get up and fight and LIVE. Who never gave up, never stopped, never retreated, never wavered. Who never left a brother behind.
Ser Brienne the Brave and Ser Jaime the Lionheart, the Most Honorable Knights of the Seven Kingdoms. The disgrace of a daughter and the man who unmade kings. Who were perhaps the unlikeliest of partners, but were a perfect pair all the same. Two halves of the same sword, who danced their deadly dance with an even deadlier foe. Who stood and fought by each others’ sides through the Long Night, and who’s love lived to see another dawn.
And finally…
Arya Stark, Azor Ahai, the Princess That Was Promised, the Bringer of Light, and the Queen of the Dawn. The water dancer who was swift as a dear and silent as a shadow. The girl who was once No One and that saved everyone. The woman who destroyed the enemy no man could kill. The she wolf of Winterfell who saved the world. The Alpha who protected her home and her family, the pack that was fierce and terrible and hers. The sister who risked it all in a moment of insane courage and pure love to save her baby brother. Who ended the long night with a swipe of her knife, and brought the new dawn. Who looked Death straight in the eye and told him “Not Today.”

you would think, after making us watch theon be tortured by ramsay for three seasons, they’d at least give us a scene where theon finds out that ramsay has been killed.

so that one scene in the newest episode of GOT gave me some serious theon/sansa feelings and i was wondering if you had any headcannons about the two of them? ~just if you want to do it~
hi so if you’re still doing starkling headcannons, i was wondering if you had anything about sansa and theon? thanks, love your blog!
It’s about time I do Theonsa headcanons tbh (and @ fandom ik I take 500 years to post them but I am always, always doing starkling headcanons don’t worry).
Theon always imagined he’d marry Sansa, but it was always just a “well, this is what’s going to happen because that’s how life will go” thought. It wasn’t until later, after Ramsay, that he actually found his thoughts drifting to a serious marriage, wondering if Sansa would agree, how beautiful she’d look in a wedding gown she wasn’t forced into, with her family surrounding her.
Baby Theonsa always argued. Their arguments leveled that of Sansa & Arya’s but Theon would always say some stupid shit and Sansa would end up screaming at him and all of Winterfell could hear her yelling while Theon tried not to laugh.
After they defeated the white walkers, Sansa advocated heavily for Theon to come back to Winterfell. The other siblings reluctantly accepted it (Bran was passively angry, but he had seen Theon’s pain, and Arya actively was angry until Sansa told her of all Theon had done for her).
She tried to find people to marry - but there was always something holding her back. She’d flinch at a touch, close down at a wrong word, never try to get too close.
Sansa found herself gravitating towards Theon - they’d sit down in the Godswood and talk about how they felt, and Sansa admitted to Theon that she felt like there must be something wrong with her. Theon’s head had snapped up at that, and he told her that there was nothing wrong with her, that he aspired to be like her at times.
The talk had ended with Sansa slowly reaching out and grabbing Theon’s hand and telling him that there was nothing wrong with either of them, and that if they ever thought differently they would just have to look at each other and remember.
Modern AU time that’s NOT sad lmao: Theon was really nervous about asking Sansa out so he’d ramble to Robb about his “crush” and kept asking Robb for tips. Robb finally put a bouqet in Theon’s hands, dragged him to the kitchen where Sansa was sitting, and said “Theon wants to ask you out, San, I’ll give you two some space. “
Theon, blushing: “How - how did you -”Robb: “You’re not subtle bud.”
They have the same taste in music (huge Adele fans) so on road trips they’ll blast the songs and do their hardest to drown out the music with their own voices.
They’re also here for the #aesthetic so they have the top down and their sunglasses on.
Sansa loves art and could go on for hours about the symbolism of a piece, but Theon could honestly care less so on dates where Sansa drags him to the museum, Theon will nod and say things like “yes…the brush strokes clearly show the artist’s hunger for spaghetti at the time,” while Sansa elbows him and tries not to giggle as other patrons side-eye them.

Theon's "I don't want to be forgiven"? Ugh. My heart. You are so spot on about him. It's why his is one of my fave arcs ever. It's just so tragic, this character that's been torn apart by conflict since pretty mich the beginning. Stark or Greyjoy, Robb or his father, wanting to heal and put himself back together again but also feeling like he doesn't deserve that after everything he's done. And Alfie Allen just acts his ass off in the show. Def one of the most underrated actors of the lot.
LOL agreed, god damn Alfie Allen for forcing me to reconsider my opinions on Theon and completely change my mind.

can you elaborate on the theon is bi discourse? I wasn't in asoiaf fandom then and i am intrigued.
oh my god guys buckle up that was a wild ride
sooooo, it started in I think 2014 I think and then it came back in tides at least until 2015 and there were some residual wank moments later but like it was one year of people being obsessed about it on and off I wanted to die inside
basically someone makes a post about how theon is absolutely and 100% canonically bisexual and if you think different you’re wrong, at which someone else replied ‘but where do you see this in canon I mean it’s a headcanon in canon he’s heterosexual’. which is a fair point I mean I also headcanon him as bi but it’s a headcanon, not canon.
my god.
IT BLEW UP. it was DAYS/weeks of people posting stuff on the tag either being passive aggressive or downright aggressive like HE’S BI AND I WILL FIGHT YOU ON IT and IF YOU DON’T THINK HE’S X THEN YOU’RE WRONG among which there were some gems like people saying they needed him to be bi because there were no lgbt pov characters in asoiaf (????), at which I made one of my two contributions to that discourse (one was a long-ass post about how theon being bi was utterly irrelevant to his sl so what the fuck were we discussing even) which was ‘okay and jon connington isn’t gay according to you’ to which I got people who were like ‘YOU CAN’T SERIOUSLY IMPLY THAT WE HAVE TO BE CONTENT WITH JONC AS THE ONLY POV REP’ and I was like ‘no but you could give a fuck about the rep you have even if it’s not your fave’ (lol I’m 90% of the jonc fanfic on ao3 where he’s not a side character at this point but never mjnd)
anyway, it died down after I made the long-ass post but then IT CAME BACK WITH A VENGEANCE AND IT CAME BACK WITH THE EXTRA ADDENDUM because now not only he was bi, he also was autistic and possibly poc (okay…) and THERE WERE ENDLESS DISCUSSIONS ON THAT TOO including
someone who said that he was a *theonkin* ie they literally thought they **were** him or so they said and their argument was ‘I’m autistic and I’m him so he’s autistic it’s canon’ ???
someone who never mind going into a ridic discussion over asha having epilepsy according to them because there aren’t disabled characters who do good rep in asoiaf (??? BRAN TYRION JAIME DORAN ????) (also sweetrobin wasn’t okay because he was bad rep) or in literature in general (I guess they never read dostoevsky or a greek tragedy), at some point they were having a conversation with two other people about how the greyjoys were pocs and the immortal ‘well asha is described as having a crooked nose in the books which is not an aryan person’s wet dream so she has to be poc so the greyjoys are poc’ which IMMEDIATELY made me block the people involved in it because casual neonazism made by people who want to look progressive is not my shit
meanwhile S5 had just finished and there was a bunch of theon/sansa content around and some of those people were complaining about t/s people being *fake fans* because they jumped on the bandwagon during the finale (???) and subtly shaming them (??), and then ‘but why don’t people write theon with the characters I ship him with’, WHICH..
turned into ANOTHER t/hramsay discourse bc it was basically like why do ppl do disgusting t/hramsay art when they could be drawing theon/jeyne or theon/other people BUT there was the extra because some ppl complained that ‘people spammed the tag with t/hrobb fics’
which was obviously a dig at yours truly who at that point had tried to not interact with that shit at all but was also the one person being that active in the t/hrobb tag back in the day
and I was already getting pissed off but like then someone shows up with the THEON TAG BINGO in which haters, people justifying torture and people thinking theon deserved ramsay were equated with people drawing the disgusting t/hramsay art AND with people ‘posting seventeen t/hrobb fics in the tag at once’
(spoilers: I spent the next three days reposting seventeen t/hrobb fics I had on tumblr on ao3 out of pure total spite it’s been enough time that I can admit it freely)
anyway at that point a bunch of people were Done TM and I made the umpteenth PLEASE STOP THIS MESS CHILDREN post (I’ve done at least five in this entire nonsensical saga) and finally it sort of died down also because a bunch of those people noped off to other fandoms and the usual old timers remained
obviously throughout this entire thing there was the usual theon hate on the tag but I mean that went unsaid
and tldr it was basically two years on and off of HE’S BI NO HE’S HETERO NO HE’S WHITE NO HE’S POC WHAT DOES POC MEAN WE JUST DON’T KNOW, HE’S AUTISTIC NO HE’S NOT and what was especially grating was that a lot of people obviously meant it as in ‘I like this character BECAUSE HE’S BI AND POC AND WHATEVER’, not as in ‘I have a headcanon and that’s it’, and honest like if you’d like your favorite character less if he was straight white and a cismale when it’s canon that he is I think we have a problem.
anyway I’m not making names bc a lot of people left/changed urls and who even gives a fuck anymore, but that was the theon is bi discourse and I’m so not ever doing that again, like I’m 90% sure that it went on this long because it wasn’t shut down at the beginning and like, no.
only positive thing that happened: at some point I was fed up, I had a fed up anon who went like ‘I decided that theon is a magical sparkly unicorn and that’s the only true headcanon and the best ever’ (yo @magicalsparklyunicorntheon they even made a blog about it) and I actually wrote two fucking fics based on that premise because why the hell not at that point, and yeah that was like the crowning achievement of two years of that shitty headcanon discourse but is2g just thinking about it makes me go like darth vader in the middle of a desert.
and this, kids, was the story of the theon is bi saga/discourse from the 2014-2016 years, it’s been fun but also fucking not

waeleto replied to your post
It's okay really he died at his home protecting his brother
oh my lord in heaven if i have to see ONE MORE COMMENT LIKE THIS ON THIS POST!!!
yes, Theon was a Stark and considered Winterfell his home, BUT...
a) he did not come to live with the Starks at Winterfell by choice. he was removed from his home and family as a hostage at a very young age. looking at the long term, was it for the better in his life in general? considering what we know about his father and uncles, yeah it probably was. but that doesn’t mean it was any less traumatic and...
b) IT DOESN’T MAKE HIM ANY LESS OF A GREYJOY! Theon was A STARK AND A GREYJOY! it’s still an important part of his identity and he doesn’t need for it to be taken away from him any more than it already was. being a Stark and living at Winterfell (forcibly) did not make him any less of a Greyjoy...
as Jon pointed out: you [Theon] are a Stark and a Grejoy, you don’t have to choose.
and like Sansa told him: your name is Theon Greyjoy. last surviving son of Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands.
Theon spent a good amount of the show having his identity be stripped away from him in it’s entirety when Ramsay tortured him and turned him into Reek. him reclaiming both parts of his identity was incredibly important for his character. he died a hero, and he was both a Stark and a Greyjoy when he did.

With the show having sparked up this controversy, what in your opinion is book Theon's feelings on being a Stark or wanting to be a Stark?
HEADCANON/META QUESTIONS ✧ ALWAYS ACCEPTING ✧ ( @mithraiic )
Tumblr media
tl;dr: skip to the end paragraph for the actual headcanon because it takes me forever to get to the point.
Before we start diving into my personal thoughts and headcanon, I suppose I should stark by talking about what we do know as canon from the books, and then contrasting it with the show, just to provide context:
In the books, Theon’s feelings about the family of his captor tend to vary; he doesn’t have a uniform opinion on House Stark as a whole. His strongest bond is with Robb, who he tends to view as a younger brother who needs his guidance, counsel and protection, but also as an equal who he’s willing to show deference and loyalty to, depending on how insecure he’s feeling at any given moment. The extent of his relationship with Robb is complicated, and will likely get a post of its own.
He’s varying degrees of lukewarm to the younger children - Robb was the only one close enough to him in age to be worth his attention. For Bran, at least, the feeling was mutual. Beyond that, GRRM doesn’t go into exact detail about the nature of his relationship with his foster siblings, but Theon later describes himself as “a friend and brother to [Ned’s] children,” so take that as you will.
As for Ned himself - Theon is terrified of him, though he’s unwilling to say as much. Despite Eddard being his guardian, Theon views him the same way most characters that are unfamiliar with Ned’s private, personal demeanor tend to - cold, distant, indifferent and suspicious. While Ned did, on occasion, try to take a fatherly role, Theon’s perception of him would always be clouded by a haze haze of fear and traumatic memories; he still remembers Ned’s participation in the siege of Pyke, and he’s fully aware that if Balon were ever to rise again, Ned would be obligated to kill him, and Theon believes he’d have no problem doing so and delivering his head to his lord father. The question of how Ned felt about Theon in turn, or whether or not he’d actually behead him if Robert ever gave the order, is harder to answer.
In the show, of course, there’s never this much detail or complexity. It’s always a question of “WELL WHICH IS HE?” “My real father died in King’s Landing” is perhaps the most gross oversimplification of a nuanced subject I’ve ever heard. Arguably, yes, Ned could have been more fatherly to Theon than Balon ever had been, but he wasn’t, and probably for a reason. If that had been the case, then the inner conflict concerning his family loyalties wouldn’t have been nearly so hard for him as it was - that’s the entire point. If one option is ostensibly and obviously better than the other, then it just makes him look like a malicious, petty idiot for making the “wrong” choice and going against the plotline’s precious darlings, becoming an awful traitor and obvious villain in the eyes of anyone who views the show through the mandatory Stark filter. There wasn’t a right or wrong choice. Both options were equally valid, but shitty in their own ways. And that’s assuming he even had the luxury of having a say in the matter in the first place, but that’s a topic for another post.
Later on, in ADWD, Theon admits to Barbrey Dustin that he wanted to be a Stark, and notes that while Winterfell wasn’t a true home, it was “the best I’ve ever known.” This can be interpreted in a number of ways; the first explanation that comes to mind is the desire to belong somewhere, anywhere. It doesn’t take a lot to figure out that, with his father, uncles, and brothers being the way they were, Pyke likely wasn’t the best place to grow up. Even when he was raised by his own family, it’s possible that, being a third son with no other kids his age, and little mind paid to him, he felt as though he didn’t belong. While he feels some sort of attachment to his roots, there’s also some lingering dissatisfaction, stemming from his hunger for approval and a desire to belong that his upbringing never afforded him, no matter where he ended up or who was raising him.
As for my personal thoughts: Theon doesn’t want to be a Stark so much as he just wants to feel as though he belongs somewhere. He’s capable of recognizing that the Starks are a warm, loving nuclear family - not perfect, of course, but they represent the ideal that he wants to achieve, something he wants to be a part of; it’s what he’s come to associate them with. But he’s also painfully aware that he isn’t a part of them, and it’s likely that, despite his best efforts, he’ll never be able to feel like he’s truly one of them. He has a certain bond with them, yes, but he wants more, more than he can realistically achieve - his realization of that sad fact, and his inability to come to terms with it, contributes to his inevitable downfall.
