I spent my summers coming to this museum as a child it holds great significance for me. The daughter of Artists, my own creative center - I was always in awe of the grandeur of the building. But I have never wanted to journey here as much as I did today to behold these beautiful sculptures created by my favorite artist #WangechiMutu @wangechistudio - truly something to behold. I knelt down before them weeping in honor of the Divine Feminine, My revered Ancestors, my Mothers, my Grandmothers, my Granddaughters, knowing that indeed we are victorious and omnipresent now and forevermore! #thenewoneswillfreeus #BlackWomen #BlackArt @asharaekundayogallery (at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3cyLqllh2P/?igshid=1js8spn4bm8z4

🙌🏽👸🏾@WangechiMutu made #ArtHistory yesterday @metmuseum w. the unveiling of her transformative commission for the facade, 4 hybrid caryatid sentinel figures, “The NewOnes, will free Us.” After 9 months Mutu’s bronze sculptures, whose adornments were influenced by traditions practiced by high-ranking women in Africa, are now on view in #TheMet's Fifth Avenue facade niches where they preside as the rightful gatekeepers. The niches have stood empty since the museum was built over 100yrs ago—the first-ever such installation on the Museum's historic exterior—inaugurating a new annual artist commission series. Bravo 👏🏽 Met director @holleinmax for pushing this idea forward. A BIG Congratulations Wangechi! Born in Nairobi in 1972 & trained in sculpture at Yale, from which she received her MFA in 2000, Wangechi Mutu is one of the most distinguished artists of her generation. She has achieved critical acclaim for her haunting, otherworldly collage-paintings, art-films, live performances, and sculptures. Comprised of either bronze or organic materials, Mutu's three-dimensional work depicts formidable figures referencing modern & classical mythologies that conflate histories and sculptural traditions of Africa & Europe. Like her collage-paintings, Mutu's sculptures reflect critically on social & ecological injustices & inequalities. Female transformation & empowerment are at the core of all her ideas and evidence in the completed work. This installation is part of a new series of contemporary commissions at The Met in which the Museum invites artists to create new works of art inspired by the collection, establishing a dialogue between the artist's work, the collection, the space, and audiences. #blackgirlmagic #blackart #blackexcellence #blackrenaissance thank you @metmuseum @sandrajacksondumon for last night #WangechiMutu #MetMuseum #TheNewOnesWillFreeUs #FemaleTransformation #empowerment #femaleempowerment #caryatid #sentinel #africansculpture #Avatars #Queens #womanhood #blackwomanhood #femalepower #changemakers #peacemakers #africanart #contemporaryafricanart #artlovers #artcollectors #artcurator #artadvisory #destineeross @desti.knee & #joakimvonditmar (at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2POgbTFmQM/?igshid=8utv676u8ul4
