You know, you’re right. That was a bit of bad faith on my part. I am being totally sincere here when I say that I was speaking from a place of rage that was probably not relatable to other people.

I grew up in a neighborhood that had a lot of diversity and a lot of communal art and I saw it defaced with slurs and violent statements on a regular basis and it clearly caused me a huge amount of resentment and frustration that I need to unpack and process. I did not realize how deep that rage ran.

I’m going to go reflect on that.

That said, as someone who saw bad actors destroy community art, I think recognizing that we live in a climate where bigots feel emboldened to destroy communal artworks and defend their actions as “self expression” is important.
