Miami May 2024
“Fifteen times Lando Norris has stood on the podium, but never on the top step, until now! It’s a landmark day for Lando! Lando Norris wins for the first time in Formula One! It’s victory in Miami for Norris and McLaren! The British drivers dream is realized and at the 110th attempt, he’s done it! He’s won it! Look what it means to Zak Brown! At long last, Lando is your winner!”
Tears stream down your face as you listen to Alex Jacques call the end of the race in your headphones, his voice filled with glee and excitement that matches the feeling in the McLaren garage. After yesterday’s DNF for Lando, it had been pretty doom and gloom on his side of the garage.
Your heart had ached when you caught sight of him that afternoon, sitting in the glass enclosed conference room that the team used to go over race data. He had been all alone, spinning aimlessly in one of the chairs, face drawn and shuttered. You had wanted to go to him then but hadn’t worked up the courage.
Things were still…delicate between the two of you. After that first night in Australia, Lando had kept his promise to win your friendship back. You more often than not found your morning coffee order sitting at your desk waiting for you during the week with a silly note written hastily on a posit in his chicken scratch writing that only you seemed to be able to decipher.
A few treats and free coffee weren’t going to be enough to bring back that casual intimacy that you and Lando had though, you both knew that. The walls you had built up so high around your heart designed specifically for the British driver were still solidly in place and you refused to go running back into his arms so easily.
And then, Miami happens.
The hot sticky humidity clings to your skin as you watch Lando climb out of the car behind the black and white number 1 sign, the first time he’s been able to park his Formula 1 car right in the middle of parc fermi. You’re not entirely sure where the humidity of Florida ends and the tears still falling from your eyes begins, you’re such a mess.
If you were to think too hard about it, the fact that you were a complete puddle of jumbled up emotion would surely scare you a little. Those walls, they couldn’t be crumbling now, could they? They couldn’t be slowly tumbling down, allowing for the while possibility of allowing Lando back into your life like he had been before?
You don’t have time to get too lost in those dangerous kinds of thoughts though because soon after he hops off the car, he’s running straight over to the garage crew and leaping into their waiting arms. He’s waited for so long for this, so many poor performances, so many mistakes and problems with the car had sent him spiraling for so many years. There had been too many nights you had spent with him when he was barely more than a teenager, sat on the floor lamenting about how shit his car was, how shit his driving was, and if he was destined to be one of those midfield drivers that never won anything in their career.
All of those doubts are erased now and your tears are falling again as the weight of what he’s done settles over the paddock. His engineers and mechanics eventually place him back down on the ground and he’s hugging Zak next, the CEO of McLaren more of a father figure to him by now. Will gets a hug too, his engineer since he joined the team five years ago.
And then, icy blue green eyes snag yours and everything else falls away in a muted hush. He’s smiling at you, that megawatt grin making his eyes crinkle up at the corners. It’s one of those genuine Lando smiles that you haven’t been on the receiving end of for far too long. Your heart stutters to a stop when you realize you’re his next target. What is he doing? You think frantically, mortified that you’re about to be the center of attention if he does what you think he’s going to do.
And he does. He throws his arms around your shoulders and buries his head deep into the crook of your neck, a move that has camera shutters clicking furiously all around you. You, of course, instantly find your arms wrapped around his shoulders, squeezing him to you despite the metal barrier between you.
“You’re here.” He sounds surprised that you’d miss this moment.
“Of course I am. My best friend just won his first Grand Prix.” You whisper into his ear as the crowd continues to grow louder.
Lando pulls back then, tears shining in his eyes. The weight of your words settle on his shoulders and you don’t think you’ve ever seen him look at you the way he is now. He tucks a strand of hair that’s fallen out of your pony tail behind your ear, looking at you like you’ve hung both the moon and the stars in the sky just for him. “I’m so glad you got to be here for this, pretty girl.”
God, that nickname. It’s the first time you’ve heard it in years and it does significant damage to those carefully constructed walls.
You smile up at Lando, a little bashful that everyone is watching you two talk so closely together. He returns the smile before turning around to answer a question from one of the officials. He needs to take care of post race inspections, which he does but not before turning back and tossing a wink at you over his shoulder.

The music of the Miami night club pulses through your body as you sink deeper and deeper into the VIP booth later that night. Lando hadn’t given you any room for arguments after all the media duties were done. You were coming out with him and the rest of the team to celebrate. You had barely tried to refuse, not giving him much of a fight because you secretly wanted nothing more.
Now you sat in the leather booth situated high up in the dark Miami Beach night club that had invited Lando out the moment he had crossed the finish line earlier in the day. There were what felt like thousands of people, most of them were there to celebrate with Lando, hoping to get a glimpse of the driver.
Alcohol burns at the back of your throat, blurring your vision nicely as you wait for Lando to return from the bar. You had insisted that he wasn’t the one who should be making drink runs tonight but he had insisted on getting you another one and hadn’t taken no for an answer. Carlos is sat next to you, nursing a drink while talking to Charles on his other side.
A small glass is set down in front of you, drawing your attention away from the DJ booth, where you had been starting.
“Vodka sprite for my pretty girl.” Lando murmurs in your ear, the words sending a cool shiver up your spine.
You desperately tamp down the way that being called his makes you feel. You cannot be going down that road. Not now when the friendship between the two of you is so fragile. You knew what it was like to lose him in your life and you weren’t sure if you were willing to risk losing him again.
The same worries you had back before it all went sideways worm their way back into your consciousness. He was too important to you, too integrated into your soul that when he disappeared, it left you broken in a million pieces. You couldn’t risk that again. This had to be strictly platonic between you if it was going to work. You couldn’t afford to lose your best friend again. Those walls around your heart needed to be reinforced and brought back into working order because there was no way you could let this happen.
“Dance with me?” The question is a husky one, whispered in your ear so no one else is privy to it.
You know it’s dangerous. You should say no. But the vodka already in your system convinces you that it’s fine. It’s just Lando. So against your what your sober self would consider the best judgement, you feel yourself nodding, allowing Lando to tangle his fingers with yours and pull you out onto the dance floor.
If you had been paying better attention, you would have seen the looks Carlos and Charles exchanged behind your back. They were well aware of the frosty relationship that Lando and you had over the last few years and this was a development no one had seen coming but everyone had been hoping for all the same.
The EDM beats are strong and sensual as Lando leads you out onto the floor, hand firmly gripping yours. He finds an open spot and pulls you towards him, the heat of his body radiating off of him in waves. His hands land on your hips, fingertips gripping at your skirt a little harder than really necessary. You shouldn’t want this. Shouldn’t want his hands on your hips, his breath mingling with yours, his curls so dangerously close that you could easily rake your fingers through them. You shouldn’t and you can’t because he’s left you before and he could do it all over again. He’s abandoned you and didn’t come back and every sane thought in your body is screaming at you that this man is dangerous. He is dangerous to your heart and your head is thrashing around so loudly but it’s drowned out by the music.
You simply can’t fight it when he pulls you impossibly closer, hands sliding from your hips lower, lower, lower until it’s almost indecent. The alcohol blurs the edges of your usually sharp judgement and it’s not helped by the fact that this man seems to have cast a spell over you. You can’t want this. Can’t love how the weight of his hands feel on your skin. Can’t adore how his lips tick up at the edges when he sees you walk into the garage during a race weekend.
This is Lando after all. Your best friend. Your best friend who abandoned you once and had only barely just come back begging for forgiveness. You can’t allow him to knock down those walls so quickly, can you?
His lips flutter over the damp skin at your temple, dusting the slightest kiss there, almost as if it’s a test. A test to see if you push him away or allow him in.
A test that you fail.
Because the moment his lips touch your skin, it feels like a bucked of ice water has been splashed over your head and you realize what the fuck you’re doing. Its too hot. Too close. Too much and you simply can’t have him touching you anymore. No, this isn’t how it’s supposed to happen. Panic races through you as you stumble back out of his arms, logic finally winning out over your own heart’s stupidity.
The delicate balance you had struck with him shatters in an instant because you both knew there was supposed to be more between you but you’re desperately scared and Lando is so wretchedly full of regret he can’t stand it.
“I’m sorry.” Is all you manage to choke out before fleeing.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
• General • Romantic [both sfw and nsfw]
A/n : I was actually looking for the ghazi attack but ended up watching baby and now I am in love-
I - GENERAL
comes from a military-police family.
his father was a army officer who died on service.
only has his retired officer mother at home. his cousin, who is a journalist, keeps her company most of the time and is like a sister to him too.
VERY VERY VERY stubborn.
sulks if he doesn't get his way.
the official baby of the team. don't let his resting face and size fool you.
he is a BABY like literally a child for them.
why? two reasons. he is the youngest in the unit B.A.B.Y and second he has his innocent spark off field that it just makes the team collectively protective of him.
they will do ANYTHING for him.
ajay once glared the whole office into silence because he fell asleep while working. he is also the one who spares him as training most of the time.
shabana has a habit of packing a extra tiffin for him, keeping in mind for it to be balanced in protien and calories because he is very particular about his diet too.
shukla ji is always teaching him hacking one thing or the other stuff so he doesn't get stuck in any situation.
had a argument with member of one of the other units and ended up in a fight which he got a scolding for from the head of that unit.
shabana found him sitting in the their common room with shoulder sagged and frowning and clearly upset.
she and shukla ji basically distracted him, totally ignoring that firoz was trying to talk ajay out being impulsive and shoot the head of the other unit.
firoz sir is always cracking joke about how it's less of a black ops team and more of a group of "jai protectors"
has a anxious habit of scratching the side of his neck, like with damaging force.
he works out for 4 hours in gym daily that's canon but he also runs atleast 2 km in the morning and a habit of meditation too.
has a hobby of building stuff and interior designing sort of.
speaking of which, their common room was basically a old conference hall they were assigned as their new office once they were made a permanent unit. he is the one who changed the look of it with shabana's help mostly.
if he is doing pull ups out of the gym he is either nervous or thinking a something.
eats a lot when you compare it to the rest of the unit.
another one of the reason he is called the baby of the group is because he visibly gets sleepy after dinner.
but don't let's this side fool you either. he is as protective of his work family as they are of him.
once punched a fellow agent who pulled out shabana's background and called her a murderer.
he has the time and names of the medicines shukla ji takes memorized.
always making sure he kicks ajay and firoz sir out of the office at a reasonable hour to send them go home, except when they are dealing with something urgent.
has seen more death than others in the team since a lot of his family members have died on duty.
is the one who stays back most the time. shabana has a mother to take care of, shukla ji is old man who lives with his wife with their son settled abroad, ajay has a family of course and firoz sir too has a wife and daughter at home.
has gotten scolded for overworking from ajay more than once.
likes to listen to soft music unless he is working out, then it's loud and mostly hard metal.
he cooks really well.
the heart throb of the office.
totally oblivious of his own effect most of the times.
has abandonment and attachment issues.
his temper fluctuates depending on the person.
has nightmares of close calls or death he has seen all his life.
used to have anxiety attacks but haven't had one for years now. specifically ever since his joining.
his wedding is a topic he really avoids with all his might.
II - ROMANTIC
SFW
will make the first move but like old fashioned indirect onces.
hopeless romantic.
believes in soul mates.
wants to marry the person he falls in love.
will leave gifts on their desk or something randomly.
steal all his clothes he will give happily.
slow dances with them in rain.
cooks their favorite for the date night.
rain kiss>>>>
always rushes home to them once he is back from a mission.
late night calls.
walk at night dates.
couple workout dates.
NSFW
soft dom.
enjoys taking it slow and sensual.
a damn tease.
loves eating his partner out.
leaves VERY visible marks.
has a size kink for sure.
his shoulder blades and thighs are extremely sensitive.

Sleeping Beauty Headcanons - The Three Good Fairies
Flora, Fauna and Merryweather are sisters, and in that order.
Being named after Walt Disney's mother and being voiced by Verna Felton [Walt Disney's favourite voice for elderly matronly characters. She voiced about 6 characters in Disney films.] Flora was one of Walt Disney's favourite toons. If he wanted an impartial opinion about something he'd go to her. [Although W.D. did talk to Mickey about some problems, he also never quite got past the mental image of Mickey as a child, and quite often didn't talk to him about the 'serious' stuff. Yes, Mickey is still bitter.]
Flora is quite level headed as long as she's not riled by Merryweather and so is frequently approached by people wanting her opinions. She's basically an 'agony aunt'. Not just by writing, she has a little 'office' in the sisters cottage where she can take someone who wants her advice. You do have to book though. You can only drop in if Flora happens to not have an appointment booked. If she's busy and can't help immediatly then somtimes Flora will call on Merryweather to help, as her younger sister is quite practicle and sensible.
Fauna is Definity the 'team mom' of the fairy's and spends most of her time running a nursery/pre-school for baby toons up until they go to pre-school. She loves it [even if the baby toons do drive her mad sometimes.] Just to be clear, I don't mean toons that look like babies, I mean Toons who from their created year are less than 4 years old. Nearly EVERY toon created from 1980 onwards has passed through her nursery. She remembers all of them as well and can recall at least one embarrassing incident per toon. Thankfully she can also remember one sweet/heart-warming incident as well.
Merryweather was designed to be significantly younger than the other two [hark why she has black hair while the other two have grey] Think about a decade younger. She's the one who often brings her sisters more...zany ideas back to earth and Flora has been known to confer with her if she runs against a particularly difficult ask. Despite the fact she argues with her sisters [particularly Flora] about nearly everything [to be point that Aurora takes her aunts all agreeing on something as 'Oh gosh, they're serious.] If anyone should be stupid enough to actually try and harm them she WILL get involved and she WILL make sure they pay. Remember the fact that she turned Diablo into stone? You do not mess with the pissed-off fairy with a wand.
To fill her days Merryweather looks after the cottage. The shopping, the cleaning. Merryweather likes getting things done rather than interacting with people. She will help people if necessary - she is a good fairy after all - but that's her normal role.
As for the wands...yes, the fairies can manage without magic, but like ALL magic users in Toontown they mainly use it for convenience. They also fly for the same reason. They're sometimes criticised for this, but really when you've got toons who transport in a flash and some toons who ride hoverboards then it's a bit of a murky area.

various headcanons that i forgot aren't actually canon pt. 3
the draw sword guild team, who definitely aren't my favorites
Firstly, I don't know why, but I made the jump of headcanon-ing Hoshino Minoru as Goto Ryuji's nephew. This isn't canon but I refer to it a lot, so I just wanted to clarify straight away this is not part of the manhwa!
Reiji had a really long lasting emo phase. It kept going even when he was a hunter, and only stopped when he was promoted to vice guild leader. But he still has tattoos and piercings from back then, and it drives the team wild (they figure out he has his tits pierced and he never knows peace)
Tatsumi was in university to become an engineer. He tends to do random things whenever he gets bored. As in, dismantling the communal kitchen dishwasher and trying to "upgrade it to maximum efficiency," or taking apart various devices to try and "create a homemade roomba," and so on
Ryuji's lockscreen is an old, fat cat, and his homescreen is that same cat with kittens, and a rather excited young child. This has sparked rumors within the team that he has a kid (the kid is a very young Hoshino Minoru, his nephew)
One of Tatsumi's better hobbies is the trumpet, much to everyone's dismay. However, they realize Minoru is a heavy sleeper when Tatsumi attempts to play the Megalovania theme and Minoru just. Sleeps entirely through it
Kanae was going to be a tattoo designer/artist (I think being a tattoo artist requires a medical degree in Japan... but she would not care) and she still doodles designs in her spare time
Kanae also wants to have every inch of her tattooed, as a goal of hers, so she takes suggestions from the team (Kenzo and Tatsumi aren't allowed to suggest anything because they keep advising onigiri)
When Reiji created the team, he first hired Kenzo, Kanae, and Tatsumi. A tank and two fighters. He hires Mari, a ranger, and Akari, a healer after Tatsumi nearly dies doing stupid shit in the gates
Mari was a sheltered rich kid. The team takes it upon themselves to educate him on the wonders of 60 cent ramen packets (and other things as well)
When Akari moves in with her pet bugs, Kanae goes back to trying convince Reiji to allow her to have a pet python. Reiji doesn't budge, and for her birthday, Kenzo, Tatsumi, and Minoru all band together to sneak a python to her room (it goes about as well as you'd imagine, which isn't well at all)
Kenzo is terrified of bugs. At some point, Akari's millipede escapes. This is where their little rivalry begins
Ryuji doesn't really interact with the team a whole lot (at first), doesn't even attend the trainings. He's moved out of the offered room that comes with being a Draw Sword Guild leader. The kids are a little disappointed, because they've heard a lot about the Goto Ryuji, and barely get to see him outside of dungeons or gates
At some point, the Annual Guild Conference is held in Las Vegas. The entire team begs to go, because it's Las Vegas, and Reiji relents. Even Ryuji goes
Ippei and Mari are tied for being the shortest two on the team. Kenzo uses their heads as elbow rests a lot
Everyone tends to distance themselves from Atsushi a lot, since his fighting style is... dangerous. Kenzo is the only one who is really friendly with him, since he's so confident that he's stronger than Atsushi, so he can't ever kill him
Ippei is prone to insomnia, so it becomes a thing to just. Walk into his dorm room to bother him if you're up at 4 am, because he's most likely up as well
Kei isn't an insomniac, but they are a night owl, so they tend to run into Ippei in the communal kitchen a lot, and they become really good friends when they start playing Minecraft together
Akari discovers Ippei's old streamer videos. Even though he deletes them immediately, it's too late. She's clipped several videos of him getting jumpscared, or rage quitting, or doing something stupid, etc. They become reaction images in their groupchat
Tatsumi challenges him to speed-running Minecraft and loses terribly, but now they know Ippei didn't fake his speed-running videos. Tatsumi always challenges him at least once a month
Reiji urges Ryuji to participate in the team, which prompts Ryuji to choose Atsushi, Kei, and Ippei as potential hunters. Reiji recruits them immediately, but Ryuji still doesn't interact with the team much, to Reiji's disappointment
Ippei accidentally microwaves a fork one time in the morning after not getting any sleep. His expression did not change a single bit as the microwave caught on fire. "Oh no," has become an expression throughout the group
Atsushi, like Yoonho, is capable of shifting powers. He turns into a brown bear, but it's a really unstable shift. He's working on controlling it
(I chose bear because I think Kuma = bear in Japanese, so little brown bear boy!!! He's not little hes like 7 feet tall but you know what I mean)

i saw someone else do this and thought why the hell not. some fun things about me :)
1. Were you named after anyone?
My name is Haley, and its loosely after Edmond Halley, who discovered Halley's Comet. My parents just didn't like the double L.
2. When was the last time you cried?
This morning. I listened to a song I haven't heard since I was in kindergarten.
3. Do you have any kids?
I'm only 15, and plan to wait a while. I do love kids and want one or two when I'm older. I already have names picked out in my head
4. What sports do you play/have you played?
I played volleyball from 5th to 8th grade, and had 3 undefeated seasons and 2 conference championships. I'm currently on my high school's varsity bowling team.
5. Do you use sarcasm?
Liberally, when in person. not as much online because tone is harder to get across.
6. What's the first thing you notice about people?
General level of colorfulness. Something about people who have a lot of fun with color in their clothes and hair and everything tend to draw me in pretty quick. being free and comfortable with clothes and color is a huge green flag for me
7. What's your eye color?
Brown so dark it looks black.
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
Happy endings every time. I'll watch horror if there's nothing else on, but it's not my go to. Give me the angst then stuff it full of hurt/comfort until they ride off into the sunset.
9. Any talents?
Pretty good at art and have a decent singing voice.
10. Top 3 fandoms?
Good Omens, PJO, then LOTR. This account is pretty much good omens even though it started for PJO, but I interact more with PJO and LOTR content on instagram and other apps. good omens certainly has the best stock of fic writers, meta writers, and fanartists imo.
11. Hobbies?
I crochet a ton, and have sold at a couple craft shows. Current obsession is crocheting replicas of the many sweaters of David Tennant. Other than that, I read and draw as much as possible.
12. Do you have pets?
I have a painted turtle named Oliver, a 21 year old cat named Claudia, and a crap ton of fish. We foster kittens occasionally, current babies are Squadcar, Squinty, Eddie, Beelzebub, and Hastur. i think its obvious which ones I was allowed to name..
13. How tall are you?
5'5"
14. Favorite subject in school?
Current favorite classes are digital art and web design, but favorite mandatory class is AP World History.
15. Dream job?
Something in either animation or museum curation.
16. Favorite books?
Good Omens, LOTR, PJO, Lockwood & Co, The Reader trilogy, The Girl at Midnight trilogy, Song of Achilles. anything myth or fantasy based, really!

Network Effect, Chapter 2
(Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For the link index and a primer on The Murderbot Diaries, read this one! Like what you see? Send me a Ko-Fi.)
In which we catch up on some of what happened between books.
Murderbot tells itself that it's not as bad as it could have been, as a first mission not pretending to be human (or faking the existence of one). Everyone's alive, all their samples and scans were complete, they just left a few days earlier than expected.
But we’d been lucky, and I hate luck.(1)
MB sets its drones to more or less standby, and Arada tells MB to get to Medical, since it was shot. MB had sort of forgotten about needing treatment for that, but confirms by turning up its pain sensors, the projectiles are definitely still in its wounds. Ratthi is in Medical, and lightly bullies MB into doing the whole system instead of the patch job.
Arada agrees that MB needs to do the whole treatment bit, but asks if it thinks there was any other way, besides her shooting the leader. MB says he'll likely survive, if they give him treatment too. (Arada had to force herself to learn to shoot, and still doesn't like the idea of hurting people. MB considers how many of its shooting wounds have been from clients trying to help.) She asks if it's trying to make her feel better, and it tells her she knows it wouldn't do that.
Arada's expression turns sentimental, and MB reminds her, no hugging,(2) and asks if she needs emotional support so it can summon someone. She says no, she's fine, and MB should make sure it's fine too, just as the MedSystem indicates it's prepped. She leaves, and turns on the privacy filter for MB as she does. It strips its clothes into the decontam bin, then gets into MedSystem's platform. It only takes three minutes to do the basics, and MB cuts MedSystem off as it suggests post-treatment options.
MB leaves Medical, to find Thiago waiting in the hall. He looks angry, and asks if it killed all those people. MB takes an aside to think how it could have, it kind of wanted to, but it hacked its governor module so that it wouldn't have to kill if it didn't really want to. To Thiago, it says it's reported to its designated supervisor, instead of any of the other true answers, like that SecUnits aren't really murder machines, that it even risked Thiago's life by not using kill shots because it knew Arada, in particular, wouldn't want it to.
Thiago says it can ask her. MB suggests he go do that. Thiago looks angry, but he hesitates and says he didn't mean for MB to get shot, and apologizes. MB thinks if he'd intended for it to get shot, this would be a different conversation. Still angry, it says the security protocol everyone on the team agreed to is available in the feed. Thiago says he made a mistake, but he had no reason to assume they were hostile.
MB takes a long paragraph to say it had reason, and could have put together a Threat Assessment Report, but it doesn't answer to Thiago. They don't like each other and that's fine. So it walks away.
HelpMe.file Excerpt 1 (File detached from main narrative.)(3)
Stepping back in time a little, MB catches us up on what it did since the last book.(4) On one occasion, Mensah asked it to escort her planetside for an "Art Festival / Conference / Religious Observation" with lots of live performances, which MB looks forward to. It watches or records with drones thirty two plays and musicals, but one experience is cut short by Mensah asking it to come get her. It's so out of character for her that MB uses a code phrase they came up with, in case she's in real trouble, but she says she's just tired, which worries it even more because she never admits that.
Leaving a drone to record the rest of the play, MB makes its way through the thinning street crowds, finding Mensah talking to Thiago and Farai, one of Mensah's marital partners. When it stops next to Mensah, she grabs its hand. MB is startled, but takes it as "Mensah needs saving from this situation" and not just grabby hands.
Thiago expresses that he wants Mensah to just talk to her family, and Mensah says she's told him why she can't.(5) Fortunately, Farai intercedes to say if Mensah needs space, she gets space, and herds him off, shooting MB a polite smile and leaning in to kiss Mensah and say a see-you-later. Mensah drags MB away, and MB asks if she needs a medic. She says she's just tired, again, and MB requests a ground vehicle known locally as a "go-cart"(6) at the nearest transport station.
In the car, heading back to the camping house they're staying in, Mensah apologizes for interrupting MB's evening. MB isn't sure how to interpret Mensah's earlier distress, and asks if she wants to watch the plays it recorded. She perks up, asking if it got a particular one, and it says yes. It's sure something is bothering her, and not just that her family is as weirded out by it as it is by them.(7) Well, it believes the adults are. It's trading media downloads with three of the kids illicitly over the feed.
It suspects that the main issue with the family is that it's not a normal, naive bot. It is what it is, accustomed to moving through human circles as if it could be one of them, and fending for itself. When it tells Bharadwaj about this later, helping her research for her documentary, she wishes she could say it's wrong about that assumption.
Farai, at least, seems to be an exception. When they first met, Farai expressed the family's gratitude for returning Mensah to them. MB doesn't know what to say, and before it can find a response, Farai asks it what its relationship to Mensah is. MB knows Farai wants a real answer, but all it has is "I'm her SecUnit." When Farai asks what that means, MB says it honestly doesn't know, but wishes it did. Farai thanks it, and that's that.
The other issue with the family might be that MB is providing security for them, and they worry it will scare off legitimate visitors. Its risk assessment module might be faulty,(8) but its threat assessment record is a solid 93%, and most of the negative points come from assuming good intentions from Wilken and Gerth until it was almost too late.
Still, Mensah's family don't think they need security, and they're right that they didn't before GrayCris. But, MB up to the point of taking Mensah to the camp home, it has had to ward off journalists and recording drones, as well as chasing away someone Amena wanted to spend potentially irresponsible time with under false pretences, since the not-a-gentleman misrepresented himself and had several other suspicious behaviours which MB observed on its drone surveillance. Instead of notifying her parental units, it intervened, potentially driving a wedge between itself and her but at least acknowledging that it didn't go as well as it could've hoped.
Back on the trip from the festival to the camp home, lots of description I can't hope to really do justice, but it mentions all sorts of things, from the architecture that's arisen from the colony's lifestyle, to mobility devices in use instead of augments.(9) When they arrive, Mensah suggests MB go back to the festival, and catch some more plays live. MB, against everything it's ever been comfortable with, asks what's wrong.
Mensah is surprised, but tells MB not to start. MB says it's for accurate threat assessment purposes. Mensah says it never mentioned that on the survey contract. MB admits it was half-assing at the time. Mensah almost says she wishes she could see it at its prime, but then says she probably did, referring to the rescue mission. MB recognizes that it's led them down an awkward conversation path, and wishes it was Art, who's good at manipulating conversations.(10)
MB says she didn't answer the question. Mensah says it sounds worried, and it says it is worried. Mensah admits she's been having nightmares about her time as a captive. It's normal and expected. MB has never seen much trauma recovery outside the serials, but there are a couple of programs Mensah's let her family believe she's taking advantage of, though MB knows she hasn't enrolled.
In an uncharacteristically observant moment, MB asks if that's why Mensah is afraid to leave the station without it.
Most of the population of Preservation believe Mensah should not need protection unless she goes on a visit to somewhere in the Corporation Rim. Crime stats in Preservation territory are incredibly low. However, MB, and everyone who knows the real story of what happened with GrayCris, know that she's been a target and could again, and agree that she needs security. GrayCris assets have been destroyed in suspicious accidents, and their executives found dead in various plausibly accidental (and not so much) ways. Once their structure started to crumble, threat assessment dropped off, but Mensah still wants MB's security. MB has started to become suspicious that it's something more than giving MB practice in a setting where it's not a tool or deadly weapon.
Mensah says it must have been obvious. MB says, no, though it thinks about how it suspects Farai and Tano know. Mensah says it's not a surprise that she feels safe with it, and it's easier to be around people who understand. She just can't quite explain to her family why she needs different support in this than she used to.
MB says Mensah needs the trauma treatment. She says she will, once she's finished a few things. And she really does want MB to go on the mission with Arada, it's a great opportunity. MB looks skeptical, so Mensah adds that with Amena and Thiago going, she'll appreciate MB keeping them safe for her. MB asks, what about Mensah?
Mensah almost brushes it off, but finally, admits she hates feeling weak, and she wants to stop needing to lean on MB. It's not fair of her to monopolize it like this. MB still isn't used to humans taking fairness toward itself into account.
It also sounded vaguely like the break-up part of the romance scenes on the shows I watched, most of which I usually skimmed over. I said, “It’s not me, it’s you.” She huffed a laugh. And then I sort of blackmailed her.(11)
Back in the present, on the ship, part of the current problem is that Mensah told Amena that she asked MB to keep an eye on her, which Amena didn't take well.(12) Thiago, who ought to know better, takes it as an affront that Mensah doesn't trust him, alone, to protect his niece. Amena tries to recruit Farai and Tano, but they just loop Mensah in and back up their spouse. Not even MB wanted to watch that call to find out exactly what happened.
So that was what had happened before the survey. Now we’re here, ready for the next major disaster. (Spoiler warning.)
=====
(1) Luck is not reproducible. I'm with Murderbot. I'll take it when I get it, but I wouldn't want to rely on it. (2) NO TOUCHY! Nooooo touchy. God, what a mood. (3) Whaaaaat is this? MB doesn't comment on receiving a file or anything. Detached from main narrative indeed. Curious that we get such a distinct marker between the present and the flashback, though. (4) Technically, it leaves out some things, like the events of the next book on my schedule, Fugitive Telemetry. (Side note, I'm not leaving present tense for this, despite being a flashback, because past tense is hard for me to write, even though it's what I'm reading, and this goes on a while.) (5) One assumes, some combination of not wanting to horrify them with what she's been through, and being worried that they can't understand because nobody else here has been through anything near what she has. (6) See, my assumption here is that it got shortened from "golf cart" but "go kart" is so much funnier of a concept to slot in here. (7) I wonder just exactly how true that really is, or if MB's tendency to self-deprecate and assume the worst is taking over its interactions here. (8) I recently saw a compelling theory that the risk assessment module is not broken, it's accounting for MB's competence in a way it doesn't give itself credit for consciously. Food for thought. (9) This is a nice touch, even if we don't see a lot of it in the stories. People just casually using mobility aids, instead of being "fixed". I like Preservation a lot.
(10) Once again, I offer an alternate interpretation: MB dances around its feelings, and that's a contributing factor to why it's so bad at guiding conversations the way it wants them to go. It's not jealous that Art is such a manipulative asshole, it's jealous that Art knows how to be vulnerable and engender vulnerability. Art has a lot more processing power and has spent a lot more time watching humans interact in normal conditions, if it has whole families traveling on it for science purposes as it once said it carried kids normally as well as adults. MB wants to be good at being a person, including conversation, it's just stuck in its own head and hasn't really tried to make the empathy in its unconscious, into a conscious series of choices. It's easier to keep interacting with the world as it has, until it has to break out of its patterns to accomplish its next goal. (11) What's that about, now? We don't get context this chapter. (12) MB attributes it to some hormone-related thing, which, rude and ageist, but in-character for MB. I personally think it's more that Amena probably assumed this meant MB had told Mensah about the encounter.

Personal framework for running a global engineering team
Five months in being Director of Engineering for a fintech startup, overseeing a small team that spans south Asia and North America, I'm building a global engineering culture that produces a high-quality technology product. Greatest challenge I've ever faced. What is helping me?
1. Being a systems thinker.
As a child my uncle would go to a used computer store, Weird Stuff, in Silicon Valley and bring home junk. I would take apart and rebuild computers. At the same time, on weekends, I would help mom look after our garden filled with abundant fruit trees.
Looking after a garden helped me practice managing micro-ecologies. I played a lot of video games growing up, notably SimCity, Civilization, and SimEarth. It was fun to explore different ways of managing complex systems (cities, nations, planet).
2. Understanding culture via ethnic studies.
I became interested in understanding my Vietnamese heritage while entering college. I became involved in Vietnamese student organizing at the school, regional, and continental level, especially organizing conferences.
I took a course in Native American Studies and Asian American Studies to help compare. What was important was to have a statistical and anecdotal view of culture. Traits can manifest by many, or by few who still see themselves part of the group.
Also important was tweaking or implementing new cultural practices. A big focus during my time as a student organizer—credit which goes to my peers—was building social cohesion among people in different geographies via group activities, e.g. scavenger hunt, trò chơi lớn.
Sometimes it failed. Other times it succeeded. Either way, a lesson learned: utilize one's upbringing, or design a way to introduce people into a new practice. Which segues into...
3. Practice marketing and product development.
I practiced asking/answering: What do people do? Is there something (a product) that exists to fulfill their needs? How can it be improved? I practiced via student community organizing, and continued having joined many tech startups.
At every startup company, we created a tech product (I developed my software engineering skills), and had to test and validate its viability. And in the context of a startup, I learned product development processes such as Agile methodology.
Culture is a product too, e.g. instituting a mentorship program, or Vietnamese New Year festival. They're not software, but it benefits from asking the same questions. Can't just do things just cuz it's always been done that way. Why do it? Otherwise people flock to alternatives.
4. Study leadership.
One way to approach it is learning the levels of leadership. The first person you lead is yourself. And then you learn to lead peers/groups, then organizations, then communities, societies, etc.
For each level one had to learn different skills. Level 1 (self) you learn self-awareness and self-love. Level 2 (peers) you learn empathy, chit chat, paired activities (hanging out; dates). Level 3 (group) you learn things like conflict resolution mediation.
Learning and practice never ends. Just because I practiced how to do it with peers my age, as time goes on, you just end up practicing with people of different backgrounds: age, origin, beliefs, life circumstances, disabilities, etc.
5. Learning and applying industrialization.
So it's one thing to learn how to create products. It's another matter to make it accessible at scale. I'll watch videos on how things are built such as how Coca-Cola Company makes soda. Or how McDonald's churn out burgers quickly.
It helps to be a systems thinker, to really identify where things get slow. When I played SimCity, I loved identifying and clearing out traffic bottlenecks. It also helps to understand lifecycles (thanks high school biology), because a lot of problems come down to timing issues.
Now... I don't have a formal training in industrial processes like Six Sigma or Toyota Production System. But it's definitely something I'm interested in. Why? Because I like to model after good practices that already exist. Which segues into...
6. Leverage partnerships and external inspirations.
An important lesson I learned while organizing in the Vietnamese nonprofit community is: if you can't do it yourself, partner with someone who can. Build their work into your flow. Or model their process.
I worked with nonprofits, so I only had shoestring budgets or volunteer hours to work with. My mentees created youth development programs by inviting staff of other nonprofits to participate. DIY is cool, but if it's not an option, collaborate.
Or if limited resources, introduce an abbreviated form. Set a goal for each team member to learn and apply one new thing each month to steer the team towards a framework. Sometimes it's about introducing terminology, because words shape our reality and the way we do things.
Sorry this is so long; really this is a brain dump. I need it because I needed to create my own personal framework for how I am running the engineering team.
