“Tommy” Symphonic Recording to be Re-released After 30 Years Out of Print

In 1972, the Who teamed with a 104-piece orchestra, a 60-voice choir and a bunch of their rock-star friends including Sandy Denny, Richie Havens, Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart and Steve Winwood to re-record the 1969 rock opera Tommy.

Long out of print, the album will be re-issued Sept. 11 as Tommy: As Performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir.

As is often the case when rock ‘n’ roll and classical collide, this coming together sounds incredibly cool in concept but, if “Pinball Wizard” with Rod Stewart is any indication, not so copacetic in completion.

Stewart, in fine, typically raspy voice, sings ever so slightly behind the music, which sounds a tad stiff coming from the symphony. Clearly, Pete Townsend & Co. were aiming for drama - “I always saw the Who’s version of Tommy as more of a sketch and felt there was more that could be done with it,” Rolling Stone quoted the guitarist as saying - but the result is overblown orchestral bombast.

Which just goes to show, bigger isn't always better. Why use 104 instruments when an acoustic guitar will suffice?

And when the choir chimes in with A pinball wizard’s got such a supple wrist, the unintended result is more humorous than high-class.

There are some tracks on Tommy - “Overture,” “Sparks” and “There’s a Doctor” come immediately to mind - where this marriage might work incredibly well. But judging from this rendition of “Pinball Wizard,” there may be many good reasons why Sound Bites has never heard this curiosity and it’s been out of print for more than three decades.
