General Old-Timey Grumbles

I truly wish from the bottom of my heart that there was an alternative version of FR purely focused on breeding, decorating, and geneing dragons. I've been here for a Very Long Time and I still hate the Coli, I still hate grinding for mats, and I still consider the dollar-to-gem ratio an affront to god. (WHY ARE GENES SO OBSCENELY EXPENSIVE. IT'S 2023 AND I HAVE TO BUDGET FOR A BAKERY CUPCAKE, A DRAGON GENE IS NOT WORTH MORE THAN AN ITEM I PHYSICALLY GET TO EAT.) I wish there was a way to get everything solely from playing the rewarding part of the game: the part with the dragons. I have some profitable breeding pairs so I make an ok living, but compared to anyone who can even halfway doodle something or who have bottomless pockets to dump money into the game? I don't feel a sense of accomplishment by achieving my goals because by the time I finally get there, I'm just glad it's over... until I want to do something else. It transcends reasonable challenge to become demoralizing. I literally just want to gene up gen1s, breed dragons, sell dragons, and dress them up. That's the appeal for me. I like familiars, but bonding with them takes forever. I like dressing up dragons, but grinding to get stuff every seasonal event is such a pain in the arse. I think Baldwin and Swipp and so on are nice ideas as site features, but the sheer volume of item sink required to participate in them makes it not even worth it to try. And while I have all the retired items I could want (wanna know why Light Sprites are so rare? We didn't know they'd be permanently retiring at the end of the first Festival so no one bothered to hoard them! I'm fucking old!,) I feel for everyone that is never, ever going to be able to access any of it because of how unattainable things have become. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but especially for wearables, having them Gone Forever? It just sucks. It just sucks, you guys. It's not fun. Flight Rising is a game full of beautiful art that makes you jump through hoops like a collie at an agility trial doing meaningless busywork to get to the part where you get to play with your cool dragons. And I know most people enjoy a lot of those features, but I'm old. I'm tired. I mean I'm literally getting old and my fucking joints resent sitting at the PC and/or swiping shit on the phone at length. I have a life. I feel the response might be to move on, but 1) what other petsites even exist in 2023? I'm still on Neopets too, and Subeta is cool, but otherwise?? and 2) no. I like my stupid sparkledragons, I don't want to leave them behind! But this is the drama blog and I have complaints, so here I am. Please insert the "old man yells at cloud" image here, because it's me.

One Gal's Descent into Insanity: A May Full of Housing

So, winning the housing lottery might've been the worst best thing to happen to my art career.

Not that I started drawing more, mind you, but think more of what it means to have a space where people live in it.

Sure, I might hear artists say wear and evidence of dirt and printmarks and scratches and time show life, and the choice of items and usage say a lot about a person's habits and ways of doing their needs. Even if you can't put that in cleanly built items in a 3D virtual space, you're left with the burdeen of thinking of what that looks like for your character (and gave such advice to a friend not knowing the answer myself)

So, how do you start addresing all this?

By fixating on the one sapphic pairing you have with friends, obviously, while deeply aware your long running joke is that your wol is a useless lesbian until Venat and Zero happened, but you don't know if the game will let the later live yet.

I legit used the row numbers as an automatic counter. using another row for marking a house area with a number and changing cell color.

Thanks to this, I was able to look at the space available and open 1234322 tabs of the ff14 housing site and place and swap items as things clicked. I don't think Nemi would be so meticulous though. She did the same thing I did when I got the apartment first:

Throw all extra shit and rewards from MSQ and have an impromptu bed since you almost never use the space. She definitely bought it in 3.2 and didn't sleep in it

...It was not going well. As much as I wanted to show her love and respect for Ysayle, that rotating blue light was ruining the vibe. At least I was set on the walls and floor?? So I had to lay on the bed I made and changed the chandelier for an Odder Otter. Any progress on the apartment, which is her "bachelor" living space likely came after Tsukuyomi, and she truly finalized and rested in the place after Shadowbringers.

Though, this apartment was more of a "later" point, so I looked at was was quicker to complete: the outside of the small, with 20 item max. I already knew it was going to be the lovely marriage retirement home, so I set to make the most romantic space possible: all colors, water under the bridge and flowers, enough space to fight a dummy under a warm light (if I get it... Ala Mhigan striking dummy, you will be mine someday)

I did snip around the neighbors' yards and houses for inspiration, and found that people vied to glitch and section the space for more traditional modern looks. Dividing the space well by purpose felt like a good space, even if my aesthetic goals were much more different.

I appreciate that you can group now instead of having along column of images on tumblr.

I almost drew at first, but the sheet item listing ended up being more helpful. After picking main floor and basement colors, everything else seemed more akin to, what makes this place scream living room? What do I have to offer guests? Can some dyeable items and vases represent parts of Nemi's journey to preserve?

I'll make a post about those finer details another time, as I don't have screenshots of that... but these progress one of the apartment room and first floor give some ideas

But really, once you know what parts of a house you want and you want to make unique it all flows in such a fun way. The best part was setting the walls down and realizing I had more to say with what items were in Nemi's room! I feel like I advanced art wise even if I didn't draw anything, and the current light of the cottage base floor clips with one wall

Tips to Reduce Spending

I’ve never had a problem with my monthly budget, mainly because it doesn’t exist. I naturally spend less than I make, therefore there’s always some money for the bills and rarely some time spent managing my money. It’s not a good situation to be in, it’s not the worse by any means, but if you want to build your savings and retire earlier you need to be deliberate with your spending and savings choices.

This is traditionally done with a budget. Now I’m not going to lie, I’m terrible at budgets. I can create them no problem, but remembering to actually follow them? Good luck.

1.     The first step to create a budget is to document your expenses. If you don’t know how much you tend to spend then it will be very difficult to create an effective budget. If most of your transactions are on debit and credit cards, then you can go back through previous months to track your spending. Or you can start tracking today so you have a better idea in the future.

2.     Once you have a good idea of how much money you tend to spend on various categories you can start building the budget itself. (Don’t forget about annual or semi-annual expenses like car insurance). Make sure you are aware of the differences between needs and wants when you are budgeting.

3.     Once you have a budget you aren’t done, you should continue to track your expenses and adjust the budget as needed.

So, now you have a budget. How does that translate to actually spending less money?  Here are some behavioral tips to help spend less money:

·       Now that you know about how much you spend on things start paying for them in cash. When you go to a grocery store with a $100 bill (or a $100 gift card) you are forced to spend less than that $100. You can’t go over, but if you had a debit card a $112 bill would approve even though it was $12 over your budget.

·       Change your daily habits to avoid temptation. Does your route to or from home pass by a fast-food restaurant that you just love? Did you just notice that you actually spend $50 a month there on coffee and French fries? Try taking a side street so you never see the sign. Do you habitually order delivery through your handy-dandy phone? Try deleting the apps, not seeing them on the phone can reduce temptation and the extra step of needing to redownload every time can slow you down when you’re thinking about ordering. Even if you don’t want to delete the app you can hide in somewhere in the back folders of your phone so you don’t see the icon and thing huh, think imma get myself some pizza.

·       If there’s a consistent ‘treat’ you like to get, think about low-cost alternatives. For example, I love pizza. Like, it’s not healthy, neither is my solution but we’re talking about money not fitness. I will often keep some tortilla shells, a cheese blend, and a bag of pepperonis on site. Then if I’m craving pizza, I can make myself a 400 calories pizza roll that costs less than 50 cents instead of spending the minimum of $10 (to deliver) which usually ends up being a $12 order which also has a delivery charge, tax, and tip and becomes something closer to $20 for a single craving?

·       Consider how your spending habits change when you’re emotional, are you more likely to buy yourself a treat and how much does that treat cost a month? Make the decision before-hand to redirect emotional buying to other positive behaviors instead. Things like working out, calling a friend, drawing a doodle of whoever pissed you off then burning it in the sink, or meditating. Whatever you do, don’t open up Amazon.

·       Ask yourself if you need something or want something before you buy it. Do you need those new shoes? Or do you want them? Taking the time to add one more mental step before actually spending the money can help reduce impulse purchases. ·       Forget trends. Don’t even bother trying to keep up with all the newest fads. And if a fad looks really cool? Take a step back and ask yourself if you really think that this new item is actually useful and will add joy to your life, or if you just think it is because of herd mentality.

·       Don’t go into debt to buy things. This mainly applies to credit-card debt and doesn’t really apply to houses (especially if you plan on getting a duplex and renting out of it). If there’s something that’s really cool, it will still be really cool when you have the money saved up to buy it in cash. It might even be really cool and cheaper if a new model comes out in the meantime.

Pay down your debts. This is less advice to reduce immediate spending and more advice to avoid future spending on interest payments. There are two main schools of thought when it comes to paying down debt:

1.     Start with the high interest debt. This makes the most logical sense as high-interest debt will end up costing you more in the long run.

2.     Start with the lowest balance, regardless of debt: This makes the most emotional sense. People are human, and they like to see progress on their goals. The feeling of success when you pay off a debt completely can help spur you on to tackle the next debt.

Starting with the high interest debt is my preference. I want to save every penny possible, and that’s the way to do it. But if you know that you may have difficulty sticking to a plan, or if you want the satisfaction of paying off your debt then the second option is a fine one to take.

Changing your behavior and paying down debt are some of the harder steps to take when trying to spend less money overall. Here are some simpler, practical, pieces of advice:

·       Buy in bulk. When you go grocery shopping do some meal planning first and buy in bulk. If you have a larger family then stores like Costco or Sam’s Club can be very useful to get some discounted prices. However, if you’re like me and live in a very small household then buying some items in bulk at a local cheap grocery store can be just as effective without cluttering up limited storage space.

·       Explore secondhand shops for new appliances, clothes, furniture, etc. Online marketplaces like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace can be great places to get good deals. There’s no need to spend $50 on a waffle iron when the Youth Ranch down the street or Bob around the corner is selling one for $5.

·       Price-shop. Amazon won’t always have the cheapest prices, and while convenience is nice they aren’t the only home delivery store. Shop around to see where you can get the best price for your purchases.

·       Don’t buy as much stuff, borrow it if you can. If anyone knows me then know how much I love books. I used to have multiple bookcase that I would move about once a year when I switched apartments. Over time I forced myself to give away or sell most of them, and now check the local library for my next read. And by now I mean pre-COVID-19. But post Covid I’m sure I’ll be back at it!

·       Look for long lasting, high-quality versions of products. A nice pair of shoes can last you five years or more in my experience. If you can, save up for the longer lasting versions so you don’t have to replace them as often.

·       Reduce any monthly bills that you can. If you consistently have rollover data that may mean that you should pay less for less data. If you’re going to the gym just to use the treadmill, consider walking around the block a few times instead. Decide if you really need all those streaming services that you pay for.

·       Adjust the thermostat, especially if your home isn’t especially energy efficient. Keep the apartment a little colder in the winter and a little warmer in the summer for power savings.

Finally, this is all well and good. But how do you actually follow through? The best person to answer this is yourself, but here are a few options:

1.     Get an accountability partner. You can go through each other’s finances to make sure you are hitting your goals. Having an extra set of eyes can be incredibly useful to not only spot places where expenses can be curbed, but to make sure that what’s on paper matches what you wanted there to be.

2.     Pay for everything in cash. This is reminiscent of Dave Ramsey’s cash budget. But if you have an envelope of cash labeled food, and that’s all the fast food and grocery money you have for the month it will be difficult to go over the limit. There’s also something more visceral in giving up cash as opposed to sliding a card that may make you think twice about going through with your purchase.

3.     Feel broke to be rich. Try opening a second bank account for your paycheck and bills, then set up a recurring transfer to your main checking account. If you never see the bulk of your money, and if your bank balance looks low every time you open the app to check it may be easier to avoid spending money. This isn’t a mindset that everyone wants to be in, but I’ve found that constantly feeling broke means I am far less likely to spend money on frivolities.

The Fascinating History of Netflix

Netflix is a giant of the internet today, but how did it start and who founded it?

For millions, Netflix is the de-facto place to go for movie and TV streaming. According to sites like fortune.com, its services alone constitute about 15% of all the world's internet bandwidth!

Not bad for a company that started by posting DVDs by snail mail. Here we explore the origins of the company and track some of the important milestones in history.

Who started Netflix?

Netflix was first founded in August of 1997 by two serial entrepreneurs, Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings. The company began out in Scotts Valley, California, and has grown to become one of the world's leading internet entertainment platforms.

When it first opened, Netflix was purely a movie rental service. Users ordered movies on the Netflix website, and received DVDs in the post. When they were finished with them, they would simply post them back to Netflix in the envelopes provided. At the time, this was seen as a boon to those who did not have a video rental store nearby (remember those?).

Today, Netflix streams movies and has more than 151 million paid subscribers in over 190 countries around the world. It offers a wide range of TV series, documentaries, and feature films across a wide variety of genres and languages, including original productions

Reed Hastings helped cofound Netflix back in the 90s

Reed Hastings co-founded Netflix in 1997. He was an entrepreneur who in 1991 had founded Pure Software, which made tools for software developers. After a 1995 IPO and several acquisitions, Pure was acquired by Rational Software in 1997.

Hastings received a BA from Bowdoin College in 1983 and an MSCS in artificial intelligence from Stanford University in 1988. Between Bowdoin and Stanford, he served in the Peace Corps as a high school math teacher in Swaziland. Today, he is an active educational philanthropist, having served on the California State Board of Education and on the board of several educational organizations.

Marc Randolph is the other chap behind Netflix

Marc Randolph is a veteran Silicon Valley entrepreneur, advisor, and investor. As co-founder and founding CEO of Netflix, he laid much of the groundwork for a service that’s grown to 150 million subscribers and fundamentally altered how the world experiences media.

He also served on the Netflix board of directors until retiring from the company in 2003." - marcrandolph.com. 

Randolph graduated from university with a degree in Geology and would go on to found and run various mail-order and direct-to-customer companies before Netflix. 

Throughout Randolph's career, he founded no fewer than six successful startups, including the magazine Macworld, and has mentored hundreds of early-stage entrepreneurs

When and where was Netflix founded?

As previously mentioned, Netflix was founded in 1997 in Scotts Valley, California. It was originally a rent-by-mail DVD service that used a pay-per-rental model.

Users would browse and order the films they wanted on their website, put in an order, and Netflix would post them to your door. After renters had finished with the DVDs, they would simply post them back.

Rentals cost around $4 each, plus a $2 postage charge. After significant growth, Netflix switched to a subscriber-based model. 

With this model, users could keep the DVDs for as long as they liked, but could only rent a new movie after returning their existing one.

Netflix's mail-order rental model would directly challenge the market dominance of bricks-and-mortar rental giants like Blockbuster. In fact, Blockbuster could ultimately not compete with the move to online streaming and rentals and filed for bankruptcy in 2010.  

But this never needed to happen. Years earlier, Blockbuster had the opportunity to partner with Netflix, or even buy the company out.

Why is Netflix called Netflix?

You could probably work this one out for yourself. But in case you are still stumped, the name Netflix is a combination of "Net" (as in the abbreviation for "internet" and "Flix" (a variation of "flick", the common abbreviation for a movie or film).

How was Netflix founded?

At the time Netflix was founded, Randolph was working as a marketing director for Hasting's company Pure Atria. He was also the co-founder of MicroWarehouse (a computer mail-order company).

Hasting would later sell Pure Atria to the Rational Software Corporation in 1997 for $700 million. 

By all accounts, the pair came up with the idea for Netflix during a commute between their homes in Santa Cruz and Pure Atria's HQ in Sunnyvale. 

Hastings would supply the seed capital, and invested $2.5 million into the startup in cash. Inspired by Amazon's e-commerce model, the pair explored various portable items they could use to sell over the internet in a similar fashion.

After initially considering and rejecting VHS cassettes, they settled on DVDs as the perfect product. They tested their idea by posting a DVD to their homes in Santa Cruz, and when it arrived in perfect condition, they decided the time was right to break into the market with their revolutionary model.

Netflix launched in April of 1998 as one of the world's first online DVD rental companies. They had only a few staff, and just under 1000 titles at the time.

2000 unveils subscriber personalization

Netflix introduces a personalized movie recommendation system, which uses members’ ratings to predict choices for all Netflix members.

Netflix goes public in 2002

With a membership count at 600,000 in the US, Netflix makes its initial public offering (on the Nasdaq, under the ticker “NFLX”). The stock is initially offered for $15 a share, with an initial offering of 5,500,000 shares. 

The company ends the year with around 857,000 registered Netflix accounts. 

Since then, Netflix has consistently been one of the best-performing stocks in the S&P 500.

The company celebrates 1 million accounts in 2003

This year, Netflix hits a new record for the number of members, with more than 1 million. The company also issues a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its subscription rental service, with some other extensions.

2004 sees a doubling in the number of Netflix accounts

This year, Netflix's member base surpasses 2 million. At the same time, Netflix also faces one of its first encounters with the legal system when they are sued for false advertising in relation to claims of "unlimited rentals" with "one-day delivery". 

The claimant accused Netflix of failing to deliver on these two marketing promises in the San Fransisco Superior Court, claiming that the company's 3 at-a-time plan precluded unlimited rentals, and there was no way to ensure the one-day delivery using "snail mail". 

Netflix denied any wrongdoing, and both parties eventually agreed on a settlement. 

By 2005, Netflix has doubled its subscriber base again

The number of Netflix members rises to 4.2 million.

Netflix accounts hit a record 5 million in 2006

Netflix sees huge growth in member numbers, reaching 6,3 million subscribers by years' end. The company also launches its "Netflix Prize", promising a whopping $1 million to the first person, or team, who can achieve a set accuracy goal in recommending movies based on personal preferences.

Netflix also released around 100 million anonymous movie ratings, using a system that rates films from one to five stars. This is the largest set of such data released to date. 

Video streaming is introduced in 2007

Netflix introduced a streaming service, called "Watch Now", which allows members to instantly watch television shows and movies on their personal computers. This was a huge shift in the company's business model. Initially, the service launched with just 1,000 titles and only worked on PCs and Internet Explorer. It also offered a limit on the number of hours of free streaming (with a maximum of 18 free hours a month), based on the users' subscription plan.

Netflix was also careful to say that they felt DVDs would be around for a long time. Despite these limitations, it was soon clear that streaming was the future of entertainment.

By the end of 2007, Netflix had 7.5 million registered subscribers -- up almost 20% on the previous year.

Netflix teams up with various consumer electronics companies in 2008

Netflix partners with consumer electronics companies to allow streaming on the Xbox 360, Blu-ray disc players, and TV set-top boxes.The year ends with around 9.4 million subscribers

Netflix is added to Playstation and smart-TVs in 2009

Netflix partners with yet more consumer electronics companies to allow streaming on PS3, Internet-connected TVs, and other Internet-connected devices. Its member base also expands to an amazing 12 million accounts by the end of the year. 

The "Netflix Prize" also finds a winner this year. "Bellkor's Pragmatic Chaos" team, consisting of seven researchers from four countries. Running for over three years, the contest had attracted tens of thousands of contestants from more than 180 countries worldwide

Netflix connects to Apple devices and expands into Canada in 2010

Netflix is available on the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, the Nintendo Wii, and other Internet-connected devices at this point. Netflix launches its service in Canada.

The year ends with more than 20 million subscribers on the books. This year also marked the point where the number of customers who were primarily streaming shows, outpaced those who were renting, leading Hasting to declare in an October earnings call that, "By every measure, we are now primarily a streaming company that also offers DVD-by-mail."

Backstory: Her parents are highly known bakers in the Orlais. The bakery is known to be the Divine Justinia’s favorite bakery, even dropping by for a random visit here and there. This came into play when everyone planned on having the family come to the conclave to cater the event.

Marinette went ahead of her parents to bring in the first of the items that were needed for their job. Unfortunately for her, she got lost and found herself smack dab in the middle of trouble.

Backstory: The son of a nobleman who wanted to keep him away from the outside world. Despite this, Adrien had managed to run away to join the Templars at a young age. He got into some… trouble when his best friend helped his friend got messed up with the Hero of Ferelden. Then once again when he got transferred to a new place… and dealt with the Hero of Kirkwall.

He doesn’t have the best of luck. However, throughout this, he managed to rise through the ranks and was asked by none other than the right hand of Divine to join the Inquisition.

For Gabriel, nothing is more important than family... 

Emilie Agreste remained hospitalized after giving birth to Adrien Agreste and shortly fell into a coma. Gabriel had to take on several odd jobs to pay off the hospital and to provide for his son. One of those jobs ended up being a delivery man for the Dupain-Cheng bakery.

In a previous TWAB, we told you that Winner’s Offering weapons would be added to the event reward pool after the first event. That was incorrect for Season 3, which will operate differently than past seasons. During this season, the factions will continue to feature their original Winner’s Offerings for all three events.

If you didn’t make it to Rank 50 with your faction of choice during the first event, you can pick up where you left off by pledging to them again. Or you can opt to start up with new blood, but remember that your pledge is account wide. Choose carefully.
