I keep seeing the theory that Dev is a clone of his dad floating around(because even tho I still haven't watched ANW I've been scrolling thru all the tags for it on social media lately for some fucking reason), and I just wanna point out. That was gonna happen in Invader Zim. There was gonna be an episode of Invader Zim where Dib went on a mission to find out why his life sucks so much, only to discover that him and his sister Gaz are actually clones of their rich, famous, and severely neglectful dad. The show got canceled before they could actually follow through and make the episode, but it was gonna happen! So. Do with that information what you will I guess-

ngl i love my girl anna but the reason cas was more compelling is that he was arcing into doubt

there is a better post somewhere but cas is confused about his loyalties, lending intense tension that fed the pre-existing themes

EDIT: all i'm saying is there is more natural tension in a person coiled/standing on the precipice than there is in the one already splayed on the ground

#there was a better post somewhere #anna was already sure of herself mostly #her dialogue was also often carved out in a very knowing #mouthpiece style #and i love her but it was sometimes very preachy #all the same there is INHERENT tension in cas's motifs and it's NO SURPRISE his arc was more in-line with the show #her best scenes were anna arguing with cas #and her anger at his betrayal cause those are the moments where she felt more real #i would have given my left kidney to see the circumstances of her fall #and the tension of her clawing her way back up the building towards heaven instead of being drop-kicked back up there #see if cas was in the PROCESS of losing faith and falling #anna needed a more fascinating *natural march toward re-discovering faith in her heavenly mission #her total lack of good dialogue concerning the death of her human parents was a miss for me...it should have been an underlined theme #SHOW ME THE AGONY ANNA #the difference between human parents and heavenly ones #that's what i wanted to see from her even more than her speeches about absent fathers and heartless angels #I'm talking YOU KILLED MY PARENTS versus ...they weren't your parents etc #anna was not merely female cas...they're comapred and contrasted yes but not the same #cas had more in common with michael even...good son good soldier motif

a surreal Sri Lankan fantasy about colonialism, revolution, mixing fantasy with the modern world

follows a man raised by his mother to kill his father, a god-like cult leader

but as an adult he puts aside his life of violence and moves to the city for a quiet life

he becomes fascinated with ‘bright doors’ around the city that never open and have no other side, and joins a group studying them to find out more

and a support group for those with divine heritage that becomes increasingly revolutionary, until the task he was made for reemerges and his life upends

#the Saint of Bright Doors #aroaessidhe 2024 reads #this is kind of hard to explain I dont know if I did a very good job here lol #it is weird and full of so many interesting elements. I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it but?? I really liked it mostly???#It starts pretty small scale focused on the MC & slowly unravels the wider worldbuilding and narrative elements in a really interesting way #The first chapter or two I assumed it was typical high fantasy but then it’s like. oh this is a modern city. with emails and stuff.#The pacing is a bit weird - it’s quite meandering and also pivots significantly in the second half. tbh I’m still ????? about the ending lm #but also I am happy to float through on vibes.#and there’s some elements (like the doors that become….not that relevant) that I want to know more about. (as an aside - I saw someone say #that it’s a very clear retelling about Buddha’s son? which idk enough about but probably could give a deeper context to a lot of it)#writing style is kinda detached from the MC but also there is a reason for this that makes sense with the twist near the end!#which is a kind of twist i LOVE. Maybe I wish it had been emphasised a bit more over the story though? unsure.#I thought his mother's story was interesting also - you think she's an terrible parent just there for background context at the start but #then when she tells her story it's like ohh there's more context here.#also I hesitate to just say ‘if you like the spear cuts-- you should read this’ because I think the elements that are similar are done in a #kinda different way and might disappoint you if you’re expecting it to be the same as spear….but regardless the sort of dreamy writing #rich world; narrative with fantasy but also modern day elements; some of the writing style; mlm MC (tho not a romance)#idk. it will definitely not work for everyone but I enjoyed it overall #also it is full of queerness #bisexual books

Honestly, as shit of a human being the uncle is, his entire relationship and dynamic with Richard is just. SO fascinating to me. Even in scenarios where Richard WASN'T abused by his brother, he still had to live with him as he grew up, and deal with his whole... Thing. I wanna know their dynamic sooooo bad

Also!! Oh my god I didn't even think of Richard's drinking being connected to his abuse, that's SUCH a good idea

Though that does give me the sweet idea of Carmen trying to help Richard with his alcoholism, maybe even chewing his brother out for enabling it

Same here, Richard can be an intriguing character because of his relationships alone. I’m curious too, even without the possibility of abuse, what was life like for the both of them? Did Richard ever suspect anything? I also wonder if the Carmen and Richard are in the cult theory is true, because if so, was it the Uncle would trick them into it?

Richard has a few things going for with him and I’m a bit bummed out, the fandom doesn’t pay attention to him as much as Carmen, and when they do, he’s just Carmen’s husband.

Thank you. It made sense to add because CSA and SA victims are more likely to abuse substances to cope with the abuse and trauma. There‘s specific personalized reasons why victims turn to substances.

Richard turned to them to improve his low self-esteem, feelings of loneliness and inadequacy, his mental health in general, and later feelings of shame, when his parents found out because he believe it was his fault his brother was caught and treated him differently afterwards. Outside reasons for his alcoholism are his friends thinking his drinking made him cool and could also underage drink with him because the Uncle would supplied them. The Uncle had his own motivation for this.

Again trigger warning because unfortunately I have to talk about this sicko’s actions and reasons to explain his character.

He gave Richard alcohol as a bribe to not tell anyone about the abuse. First it started when Richard became uncomfortable with the “games” so the Uncle would persuade him to continue by buying him toys after the ordeal. This continued until Richard turned 13, by then the Uncle realized toys weren’t affective anymore, and that alcohol would help Richard forget what happened. It also helped with the Uncle’s image as he looked like the cool older brother to Richard’s friends so they didn’t suspect anything.

Throughout of Richard’s life, Carmen has been very supportive of him. Despite what people think of Carmen, I do believe she genuinely does care for her love ones and will help them.

Oh that’s another good scene idea, the Uncle finally receiving some sort of consequences. Hope you don’t mind this, but that scene did gave me a possible direction for Carmen and the Uncle’s relationship.

Carmen is somewhat skeptic of the Uncle and is assertive towards him when she needs to be, compared to Richard. I don’t think I can stressed how much of a positive impact Carmen had on Richard’s life here. Carmen was one of the few people to take Richard’s drinking and his problems in general seriously, was and is still supportive of him, weaken the grip his brother had on him once she became a active person in his life, help Richard become his own person, and was the push he needed to improve himself. Of course the relationship went through hardships because of Richard’s problems with intimacy and alcoholism and Carmen’s own flaws but in the end Richard got better because he finally had some form of support.

#I believe Carmen was a real sweetheart and still is but under specific circumstance due to her current personality and life style #It’s hard to be empathetic toward people when you considered the average person to be lower than you #She does care for Roy but her beliefs and judgmental personality clouds her parenting #Not trying to excuse her actions because it is clear. part of Roy’s behavior is how snobful and neglectful his parents are #Just she and Richard do genuinely care for Roy but just because you love a kid. it doesn’t make you a good parent #There so much context needed for these tags. I #To save you time: Richard and Carmen were very different when they were younger compared to their current age #Hope you don’t mind the part where I had to explain the Uncle’s motivations #I know it is very uncomfortable to think about but if I want to make Richard’s story efficient I have to flesh out the Uncle.#There’s no way around it.
