I made a lmk oc

Tips for Combating Seasonal Affective Disorder

With February in full swing come many dreary days and freezing temperatures. Even though Spring is right around the corner, Seasonal Affective Disorder feels never ending this time of year. Seasonal Affective Disorder affects many people and can feel overwhelming for most. In this blog, I will cover what Seasonal Affective Disorder is and what home remedies I recommend most to clients.
Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD, is a type of depression that occurs seasonally. Most people experience this during the colder and darker months, Fall and Winter, but it also occurs in the warmer months. For this blog, we will be focusing on those affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder in the Fall and Winter. The symptoms commonly seen in Seasonal Affective Disorder are oversleeping, appetite changes, weight gain, fatigue, and low energy. In addition, there are also reports of feelings of worthlessness and depressed mood. According to the DSM-5, Seasonal Affective Disorder is listed as a specifier of Major Depressive Disorder. Therefore, when diagnosed, it would be listed as Major Depressive Disorder with Seasonal Patterns.
Treatment may vary due to the severity of symptoms a person is experiencing. The remedies I am offering are home cures that you can do at home without the intervention of a doctor or therapist. But, of course, if these tips do not feel they are helping enough, please seek professional help.
So, when it comes to combating Seasonal Affective Disorder, my first line of defense is Vitamin D intake. Vitamin D is known to increase energy and mood, and most people get their Vitamin D through sunlight and spending time in nature. But, in the winter months, when the sun isn’t as readily available or going outdoors is not an option, our levels can drop and aid in the sluggish or depressive mood that comes with Seasonal Affective Disorder. I recommend a Vitamin D supplement or incorporating Light Therapy into their routine.
Light Therapy is a fancy term for using a lightbox. People have different names for light boxes; my favorite is a Happy Light. Happy Lights are artificial lights that simulate natural light, which can help elevate mood. I think you should use a Happy Light in your morning routine. For example, eating breakfast, putting on your makeup, or having one at work before your day picks up.
When we are not feeling our best, taking care of ourselves can feel impossible. This can perpetuate our symptoms and cause an individual to feel even more down because their body isn’t getting what it needs. One way this happens is with our diet. For some, overeating makes us feel safe. While I never question how much or what you’re eating, if you are eating to the point of pain, we need to look into it. This can happen when we don’t feel like eating all day and then find ourselves binging at night or using food for comfort. It is also normal to see clients having no appetite and not eating at all, maybe due to a lack of interest or the task of cooking feel too much. Whether overeating or undereating, having easy-to-make nourishing meals will help you eat and eliminate the difficulty of cooking. You may prefer to bring snacks into your most used spaces so they are nearby to graze all day, or having frozen meals that are easily reheated may help maintain a healthy diet.
Movement can feel like the hardest thing to do when we are not well, but it can be a helpful intervention for Seasonal Affective Disorder. Because we spend more time outdoors in the warmer seasons, movement can fall to the wayside in the colder months. Finding time to move our body is hard when we are at our best, but it is important. Movement can be doing laps around your home, block, or neighborhood. Movement can also look like following a gentle stretching video on YouTube. Movement can look different for everyone and whatever you can tolerate that day.
As mentioned earlier, these are home remedies to help you care for yourself and help alleviate symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder. If you need more than these methods, please seek help. i’m probably truly never get back to crashing tide 
Taijutsu sucks. I want to die. Everything can eat my ass.
Moving from the Land of Song’s Sun Crane Style into the far more frenetic Moon-Walking Water one favoured by Lightning proved that I was a goddamn hack who should have kept up her yoga classes. Yes, the sharingan had made learning it easy but fuck if it wasn’t hard on the joints. The recall and fluidity of the motions was only as good as my personal understanding and flexibility. I was about 50-50 on both and positively dying. 
Not that the kid cared. “When can I learn those?”
“Thirteen.” I dropped low to stretch out my hip and then returned to practicing forcing chakra the opposite direction of my movements. It was sticky and sluggish but there was no way to get better other than to just keep going. “You can learn the lighter forms the hard way but until you start puberty the muscle mass necessary won’t be there.”
“I thought you didn’t fight.”
I did fight. Very close range or very long. I was a sitting duck otherwise. Dropping into a slightly messy Pigeon Pose I waved him forward. “You’re never going to have as much muscle mass as the Inuzuka or the Hyuuga. It may not seem like it but they build ‘em big. Just be glad you won’t have to fist fight a Senju.” Oh wait. He might have to fist fight a Senju. “And if you do, play dirty because they’re all muscle.”
“The Senju are dead.”
“The Senju have taken a long sabbatical from being decent contributing members of society. Follow me.” I stretched. Welcomed the sun. Threw in some warriors. Then went into the opening moves of Fire Over Air. In the manga learning the Great Fireball technique conveyed adulthood. In this splinter reality I learned that the Uchiha had spent six centuries or so developing specific fighting styles to fight every alignment. Mastering the opening sequences of those made you an adult. It made sense given what out bloodline could do and if it was complete it would go some way to explaining Itachi’s complete OP-ness. Fire Over Air I did every day because it forced me to use an element I was great at to control one I was abysmal with. 
Sasuke followed my physical position to a t. Legs in Warrior pose, hands switching between Bird and Tiger. The trick was to feel the moment where one nature became another and to force the power down smothering the emerging chakra. This was stop one of oh, about a thousand. 
I could feel the switch-dampen-switch happen between my hands. The tiny release of it was easy to control and not uncomfortable. Sasuke followed. I could almost feel his frustration with it. 
“Fire Over Air is one of the harder forms. We’ll try Fire Over Water in a second.”
“Fire Over what?”
“This form. It’s one of the Four Pillars of Suppression. Fire Over Air. Fire Over Water. Fire Over Earth. Fire Over Lightning. You start here with the basic release signs so you can learn how fire affects every release and over time you add steps. At the end you’re supposed to be like Uchiha Masaru, able to stop any technique with his will and a hand.” It also made using acquired jutsu easier. 
“Why are we standing like this.”
“Stand up straight and try again.”
He did. The second he went from Bird to Tiger a gust of air spun up and blasted his hands apart. “Why?”
“Grounding.” I changed my feet and dropped weight into them. “This position is used a lot in Earth and Air techniques -the really old school kind that’s more like dancing than brawling. The part of you that is Earth aligned automatically grounds the rest of you and disperses volatile energy.”
He frowned at his stinging hands. “I don’t have an Earth alignment.”
“Yeah you do.” I peacefully moved to Half Moon to do the fourth sequence of Fire Over Lightning. “Chakra exists as the physical manifestation of our spirit in space. It doesn’t follow logic very well. Hashirama, unhelpful genius that he sometimes was, invented a universal hand sign language that we use in Konoha. It gets rid of a lot of the hassle in remembering foot positions.” Move to Fire Over Earth in Crescent pose. “Before that there were variations in how each Clan and people performed any given jutsu. Our ancestors probably started this style to try and understand it.” Fire Over Water was a pain to transition to. All of it’s lower body movements were fierce and space consuming. I flowed down into one of it’s ending poses, a simple cross legged seat. 
“I don’t know any of this.”
He wouldn’t. “I got stationed with older kin a lot during the war. We traded secrets.” My mother taught me Fire over Lightning but it was the only one she ever learnt all the way through. I had the basic sets of all of them but like her I only learnt Fire Over Water all the way to the end.     
“So you’re going to teach me.”
“The basics. Most everyone only learnt the one.”
“I need to know all of them.”
I backtracked over the conversation, found the flaw and chastised myself. “It isn’t exactly like Great Uncle Masaru’s technique. For one he had Fuu Dog summons and god knows that scroll has been lost for awhile. It’s not a one shot.”
“Teach me.” He screwed up his little hand. “I need to know.”
Well. This is on me, then. “Fine. I can teach you the first five sequences of all of them and twenty four of Fire Over Lightning. I know all forty four of Fire Over Water but I will not show you more than the twenty ninth without the sharingan.”  
He blanched.
“Kid,” I said laughing. “We’ve had six hundred years to obsess. Cousin Sho needed about twenty days to let his thing for a Akimichi girl get all of us banned for life.”
A slash of white. A small grin. “That was funny.”
That was last year, I recalled. “Yeah. It was. If you’re betting on your brother knowing it, yeah, he probably does. It’s useful and we’re obsessive. If you think-”
“I just wanna know.” He replied in a much shyer, smaller voice.
I replayed the conversation again. 
“Okay.” Considering it through the prism of six hundred unbroken years of family. “Okay. But if I decide not to show you something it’s a medical decision. We’ve defanged a lot of these but they’re primarily analysis positions for fully trained shinobi with the sharingan. They’re combative, like you saw with the first move. You only work with higher levels of less stable energy as we go.”
Not that he’d ever know it but one of the main reasons, after the police and the eye stealing and the whole blood feud, that the Uchiha hated Tobirama was that he’d rendered large parts of the Pillar style obsolete by just mashing together new techniques faster than we could account for them. And then there was the Uzumaki clan throwing in some seals to just really fuck it all up. Certain strains of the sharingan -Madara’s, Itachi’s, Sasuke’s- had a hard on for sealing jutsu. Other’s -me, everyone else- got a horrible sense of vertigo if we tried to copy Uzumaki seals.

Deviated Paths: Jericho Part 2
Chapter 2: Hank

Get ready for some Hank & Connor hurt/comfort. Dad!Hank is best Hank imo.
For the first time in his short existence, Connor had no objective. His life had always been filled with prompts and commands, small guidance to lead him through life and to help him complete his mission. Now, it was just a blank screen. Even his warning signals had gone away. He felt the cold metal of Jericho under his hands and the blinding hot stares of the other androids in the room on his back. Had he deviated? They got what they wanted in the end, there was no way that he could go back to Cyberlife and tell them about Jericho nor was there any way for him to rejoin the police force for the remainder of the deviancy cases.
He was a deviant now, no matter how much he didn’t want to be. Connor turned and looked at the faces of the androids that had done this to him. Without saying anything, he grabbed his beanie off of the floor and tugged it back onto his head, securing it low down to where it covered where his LED should have been. Shakily, he pushed himself up off of the floor, swaying as he stood on his feet. Everything felt off-kilter like somebody had gone in and ripped around in his wires. The others were looking at him expectantly.
Like deviating had somehow changed him in a drastic way. Perhaps it had, because before he was thinking he said, “they’re going to attack Jericho.”

Connor used their confusion and panic to slip out the back and away from the ship. He didn’t owe them anything, and he had done his best to warn them of the attack. If they were smart, they would take this time to evacuate and probably destroy the ship. It was safer to relocate somewhere else that didn’t have their name painted on the side like a flashing beacon anyway.
He didn’t know what to do next. Checking the HUD again, and there were still no messages. Cyberlife hadn’t tried to contact him. Granted, they wouldn’t really be able to then but still. Did they know he had gone deviant yet? Amanda or one of the others would have probably tried to message him about his progress by now. Or, they would be doing so shortly. Maybe they thought that he was going to die when the attacks happened…
Was that what they had planned?
All that Connor knew was that he felt a bone-deep tiredness and needed to sleep go into stasis mode. There weren’t many places he could go to do this, but he bet that he could probably go and see the Lieutenant.
Winter as a deviant was a lot harsher than winter as a machine. It was very unpleasant and made Connor’s movements sluggish. Still no objectives, but there was a new warning across his HUD.
「Warning: LOW TEMPERATURES, SEEK WARMTH」
「Warning: LOW POWER, AUTOMATIC STASIS IN 00:03:40:10」
He had around four hours until his body naturally shut down and would force him to go into stasis. How much power had he drained? Checking his status, it showed that he had around a 4% charge. His distress and his processors running rapidly had almost completely depleted his stored energy. What would have happened if he had gone into stasis before telling Markus and the others about the attack? They all surely would have died at that point, and the rebellion would have been finished. Either way, Cyberlife would have won and Connor would have been killed in the process.
It was an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of his stomach. No matter the circumstances, if he hadn’t deviated and told them about the attack, both himself and the entirety of the android revolution would have been destroyed in one fell swoop. It was a bit surreal. The consequences of his actions were unintentionally saving his life, and the lives of all the other androids on the ship, if they had bothered to evacuate. Who was on the boat exactly? He hadn’t had the time to scan all of the faces. Were they all non-violent, as Markus claimed to be? Is that why he had never heard of them before?
Connor didn’t have time to think about that right now though. He needed to get to the Lieutenant's house unless he wanted to go into unprompted stasis on the cold streets of Detroit. His body would fully shut down if that happened.

Connor had the automated taxi drop him off about three blocks from the Lieutenant's. He wanted to make it harder for them to track his movements (though, since he deviated his trackers should be useless). Besides, he had warmed up a bit in the taxi so his biocomponents weren’t at a critical level anymore. He also had about two and a half hours until he went into unprompted stasis.
Connor was trying to think of things to say on the walk over to Lieutenant Anderson’s house. How was he supposed to explain what happened? He would surely have questions for the android. This new emotion, which he cataloged away, made him feel like maybe he should try to find somewhere else to go into stasis. That wasn’t really an option, though, as it was late and he couldn’t risk shutting down outside. He could maybe tell him that he’ll talk to him after he rests for a while? Connor knew that the Lieutenant had a charging station at his house, just in case Connor had to charge. He also understood that he probably wasn’t very fond of having that charging station, since he had a negative view on androids.
The porch light was off when Connor approached the house. It didn’t surprise him though, as his internal clocks read that it was 1:43am. Lieutenant Anderson may not even be awake, so if Connor wakes him up he may be grouchy and not let the android inside. A message popped up, stating that if Connor woke up the Lieutenant that he had about a 64% chance of being let inside, but if he just found the spare key and let himself in, that jumped up to a 93% chance of being able to stay inside for the night. So, Connor scanned the surrounding area calculating where the spare key would be hidden. He didn’t want to just bust through the man’s window again. Connor didn’t think he would enjoy a repeat performance.
A quick scan showed that the key was hidden behind a loose brick on the side of the house. Not as obvious a hiding place as a false rock, but it was easy enough to wriggle out and grab the silver key. Connor put the brick back and put the key in the lock. When he entered the house, he noticed immediately how much warmer it was than the outside. A rush of relief fell over him. He quickly locked the door back and put the key on the kitchen table. Then, he grabbed the charger from the corner, plugged it in, and moved over to the couch to curl up. Sumo ‘boofed’ softly at him, following him onto the couch and curling up in his lap. After plugging in, Connor let himself enter stasis naturally and sagged against the couch.
That was the way that Lieutenant Anderson found him a few hours later. Connor was startled out of stasis when Hank let out a loud shout.
“What the hell Connor? What’re you doing on my couch?” Connor blinked up at him, his systems taking a few seconds to come back online. It showed that he went from 4% charge to around 35% charge, so it was enough to keep him going for a while.
“Oh, hello Lieutenant Anderson. I was running low on charge, so I came by to charge. Sorry if it was a shock to see me, but you were the closest place and my biocomponents were going to be damaged out in the cold.” Hank looked puzzled. He knew that the android usually went to Cyberlife to charge, or stayed at one of the police stations charging ports overnight. Yes, he had bought the charger for Connor to use, but he didn’t think he was in critical enough condition to have to use it.
“I’m not sure how you got into my house, but seeing as there’s no broken glass I guess you used the spare key. You must have been in pretty rough shape to come directly here since the police and Cyberlife have much better chargers than I do.” Connor drew in a sharp breath. He wanted to try to hide his deviancy from the Lieutenant, but he knew that he wouldn’t be able to. It would be fairly obvious that he was a deviant, and it’s not like he could hide it forever. Cyberlife would come knocking when they realized that he was still online. Then they would kill and disassemble him to study his deviancy like they had wanted to do to Markus.
“I-I can’t go back to Cyberlife,” Connor stuttered, “I’m not of..use to them anymore.” As a deviant, was he of use to anybody anymore? Emotions and not knowing what to do were really confusing.
“What do you mean you can’t go back? Did you fail your mission or something?” Hank asked, sitting down on the couch next to Connor. He felt like the android was going to want to talk this out, whatever had happened.
“I wasn’t able to capture Markus. He..compromised me. Now, Cyberlife is going to kill me if they get a hold of me.” Connor was trying to stay strong but he felt like he was going to collapse again. His model wasn’t made to handle such intense feelings. They just got in the way of the mission. They served no purpose to him.
“Kill? Connor, I don’t think they’re going to kill you for making a mistake. I mean, you’ve failed a few missions in the past and you’ve been alright.” Hank was concerned. Connor could read that his stress level had gone up by 3% since the last thing that Connor had said. Connor suddenly felt another wave of panic hit him, and he let out a small sob.
“H-hank, they made me deviate.” Hank was shocked. First, Connor had called him Hank to his face, something the Lieutenant had been trying to get him to do for a little while now. Secondly, they ‘forced’ him to deviate? He wasn’t aware that could occur. He knew that androids deviated under intense stress and bad situations, but he had always known it of being of their own free will.
“Connor, it’s okay,” Hank said, putting his arm around the android, pulling him into his side. He used to do this when Cole was upset. “What happened, son?”
At that point, Connor wished he could interface with Hank. It would be so much easier, and Connor wouldn’t have to go through it again. He let out a shuddering breath, before explaining what had happened. From his arrival to Jericho to the pen knife to compromising the mission by telling them about the attack, and ending with him on the couch. He didn’t voice his concerns about Cyberlife planning to kill him from the very beginning, because he didn’t want to think about them right then.
Hank’s face changed from passive to enraged by the end of the story. “That’s total bullshit. I’m going to kill Markus personally, that’s not something that you do to another living being.”
“Lieutenant, please,” Connor said, “I didn’t like it, but he was trying to protect his people. They couldn’t kill me, and they couldn’t just wipe my memory.” Connor wasn’t sure if he would ever trust or like Markus after that, but deep down he did understand that even if it wasn’t fair, he was their enemy at the time. Hank killing Markus wouldn’t do anything to solve his problems.
“He’s still a bastard,” Hank said, “and he better never get near you again or I will end him.” He stroked Connor’s hair. He couldn’t imagine the turmoil that Connor must be going through. He had shown signs of deviancy since they first met: ignoring orders, his coin trick, his excessive amounts of empathy; and Hank may have been trying to nudge Connor in that general direction, but it should have been his own choice, not forced upon him like that. All of that on top of the fact that Cyberlife would probably hunt down Connor now. Hank had to try to keep him safe.
“It’s going to be okay Connor, we’ll figure something out,” Hank reassured him, “I know you said your power was low, what are you at now?”
“I’m at 34% charged,” Connor said.
“Okay, why don’t you go back into stasis for a while until you’re fully charged. Then, we’ll come up with something.” Hank gave Connor a small smile. Connor nodded, laying back down on the couch. Hank brought a quilt for the android, but when he got back Connor was already in stasis. So, Hank tucked the blanket around him and left him there to charge while he came up with a semblance of a solution to their issue.

Quality or Quantity? Why Don't You Sleep On It
Imagine you had a late night last night. You wake up feeling sleep-deprived, so you decide that you’ll go to bed early tonight to catch up on your rest. You think that by getting an extra few hours of sleep, you’ll wake up feeling refreshed the next morning.
Many of us have used this line of thinking, but how often does it work? You can probably recall times where you had perhaps 5 hours of sleep, but still felt energised and productive. There are likely other times when you’ve gone to bed early, but woke up feeling as though you barely slept.
Could it be that good sleep is more complicated than reaching a magic number of hours per night? Is it the quantity or quality of your sleep that affects how you feel?
More is better
Many of us grow up with our parents telling us that we should get more sleep. Babies sleep an astonishing 14-17 hours every day, while teens need 8-10 hours of rest. Adults can function well on 7-9 hours. From the parental perspective, more sleep is better for growing children.
That’s where the “more is better” mentality begins, but we have supporting evidence from our experience. Science tells us that we need to sleep to survive, and when you rest, your body can heal and recharge. You’ll feel more energized when you wake up. This thinking makes sense, but it is overly simplistic.
Think of it this way–your phone has a battery. No matter how long you put the phone to charge, it can’t go more than 100% It doesn’t create new ways to store energy. It just maxes out. Your body works in the same way. You need rest, but more sleep doesn’t necessarily give you an extra supply of energy.
Sleep studies from the past used to focus on the number of hours of sleep that people need. We’ve all heard of the need to get a certain number of hours per night to keep our bodies and minds in peak condition. Government health organisations further impress upon us the need to get a certain number of hours of rest.
Finally, studies on people with sleep deficiencies show that they have a shorter and poorer quality of life than people with adequate sleep. A sleep-deprived brain can behave like an intoxicated brain, and long-term cognitive issues can arise with continuous substandard sleep. It’s no wonder we all have the mind set that it is important to sleep as much as we can!
Is too much a good thing?
So if we have been told that it is important to get more rest, then is it really a good thing to sleep a lot? We’ve all woken up from a nap and felt terrible afterward. Studies have shown that sleeping too much is in actual fact, not good for you. Sleepers tend to have more issues with depression, increased pain, a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, and impaired cognitive function.[1]
Too much sleep can leave you feeling tired and sluggish. Having a day where you sleep too much throws off your sleep cycle, which eventually hurts the quality of sleep that you have. People who insist that they can make up for lost sleep on the weekends sabotage their chances of being well-rested ultimately.
How you sleep is more important than how much you’re sleeping
Of course you need a reasonable number of hours of sleep to feel rested. Nobody would dispute that. Sleep quantity is just one part of the equation. How we sleep is more important than the number of hours we sleep.
Feeling refreshed after sleep has a lot to do with your REM cycle. REM stands for “rapid eye movement,” and describes the dream phase of the sleep cycle. You generally reach the first 10-minute REM cycle about an hour and a half after you close your eyes.[2] You’ll continue to hit REM sleep every 90 to 120 minutes until it’s time to wake up.[3]
Quality is key
One of the ways to ensure that you’ll wake up feeling rested is to access as much REM sleep as possible. What we’re doing in the time leading up to sleep is also important. Activities that give your brain the chance to get into REM sleep as often as possible are best for you.
New moms have a particularly tough time with this. In spite of the fact that they may be able to squeeze in about 7.2 hours of sleep over the course of the day, most new mothers have sleep patterns similar to people who suffer from sleep disorders such as sleep apnea.[4]
If they’re technically getting an appropriate amount of sleep for an adult, then why are they so sleepy? It’s quite simple: new  mothers don’t feel rested because they are awakened several times throughout the course of a night. This means that they don’t sleep long enough to enter REM sleep. Remember, it takes 1.5-2 hours to complete a sleep cycle, and REM comes at the end of the cycle.
Without this chance for restorative sleep, new moms feel exhausted. Though they can try to catch up on rest, sleep patterns follow a cycle. A mom who is awakened every two hours may not get enough full cycles of sleep, if she gets any at all.
Sleep and your health
Two studies assessed how sleep quality and quantity affected college students’ health and well-being.[5] The studies concluded that sleep quality was a better predictor for a healthy and happy life and improved well-being than sleep quantity.[6]
In the studies, subjects slept for an average of 7 hours per night. People who reported experiencing higher quality sleep were able to feel more satisfied with their lives, experienced less anxiety, and reduced feelings of depression, fatigue, confusion, and anger compared to people who reported high quantities of low-quality sleep.
How sleepy you feel when you go to bed can also affect your sleep quality. The more tired you feel when it’s time for lights out, the more likely it is that you’ll have a restful night of sleep.
Quality triumphs quantity
The old adage is true: quality beats quantity. You’re better off with 6.5 hours of high-quality sleep than you are with 8 hours of mediocre rest.
This could explain why some people seem to do well on fewer hours of sleep. People who can access restorative sleep more often or can reach the REM phase more quickly will feel more rested. This isn’t something that everyone can do, though. Most of us need 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep to restore ourselves.
You can improve your chances of having high-quality sleep
You may not be able to will yourself into the REM phase, but you can set yourself up for sleep success. Here are a few ways to increase the quality of your sleep:
Take a hot bath before bed. The heat can soothe and relax sore muscles and prepare you for rest.
Turn of your electronic devices. Electronics emit blue light, which has been proven to disrupt sleep patterns.[7] Turn off your electronics, or at the very least, silence your notifications and turn on a blue shade to filter the blue light.
Drink chamomile tea to relax. Chamomile’s soothing properties make it a go-to remedy for nervousness and poor sleep.[8]
Snack on cheese and crackers. This is a perfect snack because it combines carbs with calcium or a protein that contains tryptophan. These combos boost levels of serotonin, a brain chemical that helps you feel happy and calm. Indulge about an hour before bed so that your brain has time to reap the benefit before lights out.
Drink warm milk. Skip the alcohol. Booze may make you drowsy, but it won’t help you reach the REM phase faster.[9]
Sleep in a cool room. If you get too warm, you’re likely to feel uncomfortable and wake up. A cool room sets the stage for a restful night.
Keep it quiet. Just because you can fall asleep while the TV is blaring doesn’t mean that you should. Ideally you’ll have little to no noise. If silence is unnerving, white noise is fine, but you avoid loud or disruptive environments if you can.[10]
The lights should be low. Our bodies are adapted to be awake when the sun is up and asleep when it’s dark. We sleep better in the dark. Partially close your curtains so that you can experience the benefits of being in a darkened room and wake up naturally with the sun.
Lay off the caffeine. A caffeine boost can feel great, but if you drink too much coffee or tea late in the day, you might have a tough time getting to sleep. Caffeine also affects the length of phases of your sleep cycle, which can prevent you from reaching or staying in the REM phase for long.[11]
Stick to the same sleep schedule every day. Making up for lost sleep or sleeping in on the weekends is going to make it harder to get into a good sleep rhythm.
Experiment with alternative sleep cycles. If the other tips on the list don’t seem to be working for you, or you have a job that prevents you from going to bed at the same time every night, you could try some different sleep cycles including:uberman, dymaxion, everyman, and biphasic. [12]
If you try the uberman, you’ll only sleep about two hours per day. Sleep is spaced out over 6-8 naps lasting about 20 minutes each. Dymaxion isn’t for the faint of heart either. If you need to increase the amount of time that you’re awake, this cycle allows you to get by on as little as 2 hours of sleep per day. You get four 30-minute naps spaced throughout the day.
The everyman sleep cycle is one 3.5-hour stint of sleep followed by three 20-minute naps over the course of your day. Biphasic, the least extreme of the alternative sleep cycles, involves sleeping in two segments. This pattern requires 5-6 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night and one nap in the middle of the day.
Getting good sleep is about more than blocking off a few hours in your schedule
Having enough sleep is important, but what is enough varies from person to person. Getting high-quality sleep is about more than setting aside 7-9 hours for rest. You can set up your environment and schedule to make the most of your sleeping hours.

Detox cleanses sometimes hurt more than help: what you need to know
Detoxing: an old remedy for good health?
The idea of detoxing - purging the body of poisons and other harmful substances, to bolster the immune system, eliminate fat and increase energy levels – has been around since at least the early 1900s. These days, it is more popular than ever, thanks to a gaggle of celebrity endorsements of popular diets. A quick search on Amazon.com turns up hundreds of books, cleansing products, herbs and nutritional supplements to help you cleanse your way to good health.
Before having kids, I used to detox at least a couple of times a year. I’d usually fast using water, broths, and freshly-juiced fruits, alongside detoxing powders or tablets containing ingredients like psyllium husks, which stimulate the body’s elimination system. Like others, I felt better and more energized immediately afterwards. Years later, I wonder if all that detoxing might have done more harm than good. For years I suffered off and on from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and still occasionally have episodes if I don’t watch my diet carefully.
Doctors and many nutritionists have amply warned that long-term or frequent detoxing diets can harm the body and cause sustained health problems. People with certain health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and blood sugar disorders, or who are pregnant or nursing should not detox at all. (Most detoxes involve severely restricting the diet to liquids or purees for days or weeks at a time). However, a vocal minority of medical professionals claim that detoxing, done sensibly and in moderation, can enhance the body’s natural abilities to rid itself of harmful substances.
There is no doubt that we are all exposed to harmful chemicals every day. This is a result of the increase in the number of toxins in the environment as well as the widespread consumption of processed foods that don’t provide adequate nutrition, robbing the body of its innate capacity to self-renew. However, there are ways to enhance the body’s own capacity to rid itself of toxins without some of the nasty health effects of so many detox regimens. Here are 6 things to keep in mind if you are interested in detoxing.
Your detox doesn’t have to be restricted to liquids.  The most restrictive detox diets restrict you to “cleansing” juices, teas, and broths. Some even reduce you to consuming only water – copious amounts of it – over a period of days. These may do more harm than good, putting added stress on your body’s organs or filling you with excess sugar without the balance of fiber needed to help your body absorb it, because juices that consist entirely of extracts of fruits eliminate the best part of the fruit (the pulp), leaving you with a lot more of the sugar than you may realize. Consuming sugary liquids can cause your blood sugar to rise rapidly then plummet. If your blood sugar levels drops too low it can cause a reaction known as hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia may leave you feeling dizzy, mentally confused, hungry, or tired. It may cause headaches irritability, or sleepiness, and in severe cases, can cause you to faint or have a seizure. Alternatives to liquid-only detoxes include regimes that focus on incorporating foods that naturally detox the body’s organs. Plan to feel tired and use the bathroom a lot. Because detoxing involves suddenly withdrawing the food and drink that the body has become used to, then gradually reintroducing it, the body may experience some withdrawal-like symptoms. This means that if you are used to drinking coffee or caffeinated tea in the morning and suddenly stop, your body may be sluggish at first. A lack of the normal amount of calories that you are used to taking in on a regular day of eating also results in a lack of energy and feelings of lethargy. Some of the colon cleanses that are recommended for detoxifying the body cause you to visit the bathroom frequently. Alternatively, if you consumed a high-meat, a low-fiber diet, and switched to higher fiber intake during the detox, you’ll have more frequent bowel movements than before.
You may experience irritability and bad breath while detoxing. A lot of us get grumpy when we haven’t eaten in a while, and it’s no different if you are detoxing in a way that severely restricts your calorie intake. Some say that this irritability is caused by the toxins that are in your system, and that a release of all kinds of emotions can accompany a detox (because of the connection between physical and emotional health). While this is debatable, it’s true that if the detox was done in a way that suited your particular health needs, you’ll feel a better – physically and emotionally – at the end of the detox. To deal with the irritability that arises during the detox (especially at the beginning), prepare yourself mentally beforehand, and engage in activities that can support your mood – yoga and meditation, and other forms of light exercise, for example. Get plenty of sleep, and try to reduce your external sources of stress. For the bad breath that may accompany detoxing (it’s a result of the buildup of acids in the digestive tract), use a tongue scraper (available in drug stores) and chew on mint leaves or gum. It’s even more important during a detox to practice good dental hygiene, brushing twice a day and flossing at least once daily.
Most popular detox diets take a one-size fits all approach. There are a lot of popular detox diets out there that individual people (and celebrities) will swear by, but there’s no way to know for sure if any given detox diet will have the effect you seek, or whether it will cause you more harm than good. While most diets recommend fasting or severe calorie restrictions, this may not be feasible for you, especially if you have a lifestyle that requires a lot of energy (e.g. young kids that need a lot of your attention). Also, some of the supplements or colonic cleanses you take during cleanses can cause bloating, cramping, dehydration, nausea, or vomiting. The best way to approach a detox diet is in consultation with a licensed, experienced nutritionist and your primary care doctor. Have a physical if possible before embarking on a detox, and find out if you have any nutritional deficiencies or ailments (e.g. high blood sugar) that may be aggravated with the detox you’re planning to undertake.
Most detox diets help you lose weight – but only temporarily. You’ll probably lose a few pounds on a detox diet (severe calorie restriction will do that!), and some of that will be water weight, but you’ll just gain the pounds back once you begin re-introducing regular foods into your diet. However, there is some reason for optimism: a 2013 Korean study of overweight women in which the subjects went on the “lemon detox diet” did show a reduction in body weight, body mass index, percentage of body fat, and waist-hip ratios in the study participants. However, these results were unique, and most people who embark on a detox diet don’t do so under clinical supervision.  As with any diet, the problem is that it is usually approached as a temporary or “quick-fix” solution, without the necessary lifestyle changes that will bring about lasting effects. The best detox diet is one that isn’t a diet at all, but incorporates healthy eating habits, regular exercise, ample sleep at night, stress-reduction techniques, and efforts to create a balanced lifestyle.
You can achieve most of the same effects by making some key changes to your diet and lifestyle. Again, detoxing is a temporary solution to what is, for many of us, a lifestyle problem. Rather than embarking on a radical few days’ detox, it’s much more effective to practice a healthy lifestyle. Avoiding toxins in personal care products and household cleaners, switching away from processed foods and towards whole and organic foods as much as you can, developing nutritional strategies (preferably with a licensed nutritionist to achieve optimal gastrointestinal health), incorporating the kinds of foods in your diet that help the body’s natural detoxifying processes, cutting down on the kinds of food that lead to chronic inflammation, and paying attention to stress levels and sleep duration (and quality of sleep) go much further in the long term than any short-term detox can.

A lesson long time coming- 22nd of July
First lesson in a LONG time. I’m talking like first ridden lesson in nearly 12 months. I didn’t expect it to be pretty lol I will say though, Reggie did me a solid and behaved for the most part, but it was kind enough to highlight our short comings too, I guess that’s what you pay for  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I thought we’d been doing pretty well considering Reggie’s had only a few months under saddle and mainly road riding at that. He was pretty forward, responsive to the seat/leg, gentle on the hand, couple issues with the canter in the arena, but that I suspect is due to age and him weak through his stifles, little bit of drifting on the right rein, but all in all pretty solid riding horse. Alas, I was very wrong. 
Not to say he’s horrible, but he isn’t established to the level I thought he was. He likes to sit behind the leg, not moving forward and I am not nearly as balanced as I thought (maybe hoped is a better word) I was (but is that not the never ending issue). Its amazing what bad habits you pick up and subsequently forget about when you don’t have a good pair of eyes on the ground. Main issues located today were, Reggie not being forward. He wants to dawdle and stay behind the leg, or alternatively run on, pull with the shoulders and let the hind legs trail out back. Secondly, being young and unbalanced, he likes me to sit a certain way. Makes it easier for him and subsequently I’ve developed bad balance in the correct position. I sit off to the right and want to grab with the right leg to keep him out of the circle. In other words, most of the drifting is my fault and an easy fix. I’ve just got to remember to be centered and keep my legs off and long, and him and let him do his work :) Easier said than done but its gotta get fixed! Unsurprisingly, the drifting stopped almost completely once I was sitting centered.
Last interesting point on the things to fix, Reggie doesn’t like low hands. This kinda surprised me ‘cause I don’t usually ride with my hands low. However, I had been trying to keep him on the correct track by being more in his mouth than I should have been. It becomes so habitual because in those beginning stages where he didn’t know leg or seat aids, all you had was the bridle. However, Reg is beyond those stages now and I need to retrain myself on how I need to ride him. Surprising how, often its the rider who needs training and not the horse :P He was also ready to move out of the full cheek snaffle and into the egg butt which is great! The full cheek (single joint) has gotten too strong for him and he’s beginning to sit behind the bridle rather than going too the bridle. I much prefer the double joint to the single so I was happy I got the all clear to move on lol He’s got a very soft mouth, so the gentler and stiller I can keep the bit all the better in Reggie’s mind and I tend to agree :) 
Now to the stuff we learned, of which there was a lot. First point of address, sit properly, which I think is fairly self explanatory. Next was establishing a better contact. Not as in getting Reg on the bit, but me sorting my hands out. I tended to hold them low and out when I needed to ‘steer’ and lock through the elbows which was making everything jarring instead of smooth. Again, relatively easy fix when I’m thinking about it. Carry hands higher/further up his neck and think soft elbows constantly. Eventually it will become muscle memory. I hope.... 
Reggie was much happier once we got all that sorted. I’m lucky in the fact he does ride out to the bridle relatively well, so long as I’ve got myself in order. Practiced some refined steering as well, again to help with the hand thing. Young horses don’t lie and are brutally honest when it comes to how you sit. Luckily, that can be turned into another turning aid. Was lots of fun doing circles and figures of eights just by weighting your toes, but it was a bugger to get since I’d gotten into the habit of sitting unevenly and relying on my hands. This is part and parcel in developing straightness. To have a horse listening to where your balance is leading them, a lot of other movements suddenly become a lot easier. As the concept is developed more, correct bend can be established without even moving the bit. It can be very ugly in the beginning stages, but then, what isn’t?
Last of the exercises done today was stride length within a gait. As I mentioned before, Reggie was not at all forward. Yeah he could speed up, but he wasn’t forward. Furthermore, he was sluggish to respond when asked to move out or come back. He likes to pin his ears and screw his nose up when asked to move out, its actually very funny to look at. And contrastly, even though he wasn’t quick when asked to change his ‘speed’ if I got after him too much with my leg, he would suck back more rather than move out. So, instead swing with the seat and if no response, flick with the whip, all the while keeping hands forward, up and together. Bringing him back was also challenging, but in a slightly different way- he liked to loose all energy and stop.. Not the point of the exercise Reg :/ Again, little tap with the whip the first few times, just so he knows a half-halt doesn’t mean a full halt lol
This particular exercise is rather interesting because you want the horse to begin to anticipate the change in pace. The idea is that the horse should always be waiting to be pushed on or brought back, thus keeping their hind legs under. That is, its really beginning to teach collection in its most basic form. Requires thinking on horse and rider’s part, without being overly physical. Plus, you can practice it anywhere, even on the trail with ease ;) It can take a little while for the idea to click though. I was surprised Reggie managed to pick it up as well as he did. Seriously, if you can get this exercise right, even if only for a few strides, you’ll feel like you’re floating. Like Reggie’s stride felt like it just about doubled because all of a sudden he’d taken a little more weight behind and his shoulder was free to swing forward and extend rather than just poking the ground. He thought it was very cool and fancy and was a little bit of a show off, almost plopping into a passage when we got him to shorten up before he decided that was too hard lol Lotta personality that horse. But this is definitely an exercise I will be practicing more regularly even if in small bursts. If I can get the truly forward trot more often, its only gonna help strengthen him and improve his natural way of going. Being a clydie cross, Reggie is naturally quite short in front and likes the bring the front legs up rather than reaching forward and carrying the energy from his hind. Luckily, he’s got a pretty good engine on him and naturally has a fairly soft swinging back. Lifting the front and carrying the energy is however more difficult for him than for my warmblood mare. With more of this type of exercise and more time, this should improve that and then we’re cooking with gas! Might make a dressage horse out of him yet
