She was given an NEA Jazz Masters Award in 1989. I recently watched Tom Volf’s extraordinary documentary, Maria by Callas. The film was a fascinating melange of performance clips, never-before-seen footage, extracts from private correspondence, and interviews with Maria Callas. The documentary provided a fascinating insight into Callas’ life, from her humble beginnings to a meteoric rise. Callas’ voice was beautiful and pure. Her private life, however, was often tragic - from a stolen childhood, to failed relationships. I loved seeing the footage of Callas in her grand homes and apartments, each of which was so tastefully decorated. One of my favourite Callas performances was her 1955 Madama Butterfly. I am yet to go to the opera, so when I discovered that the Hallé in Manchester were performing Madama Butterfly for their season finale, I just had to book tickets. Throughout this time, Vaughan worked at the Cafe Society Downtown in Greenwich Village, where she met a handsome trumpeter, George Treadwell. Married to Tread-well in September of 1946, Vaughan entered into a period that, as Barry Ulanov described in A History of Jazz, “seemed balanced, burgeoning, brightly burdened,” as Vaughan’s manager Treadwell set out to improve his wife’s image and on-stage appearance. Though the couple began the marriage in good financial stead, over the next decade Treadwell’s management of Vaughan’s bookings and personal accounts nearly devastated her career. Hailed by Metronome magazine as the “Influence of the Year” in 1948, Vaughan rose to jazz stardom. In the following year, she signed a five-year contract with Columbia and recorded her classic “Black Coffee” with the Joe Lippman Orchestra—a number that climbed to number 13 on Billboard’s pop charts.
