Gli ultimi giorni di Domenico Cimarosa
Pubblichiamo un testo, datato Gennaio 1872 e apparso nello stesso anno all'interno del periodico americano "Dwight's Journal of Music".
"Sir,
in reading an account of Cimarosa in the papers of the day, I thought the following communication might not be unaceptable to the musical world. I think it was about the year 1800 I was engaged at the Fenice, at Venice. Cimarosa was the composer of a new opera (his last) called “Artemisia”; the libretto by Il Conte Colloredo). I was with the illustrious composer almost every day. He was evidently dying, though full of wit, spirits, and repartee. He took a great quantity of cicuta. The mistress of the house in which he resided called one morning, and begged he would pray to the saint of her parish, assuring him was very powerful. Cimarosa thanked her exceedingly, but said he was afraid it would be of no use, as not belonging to her parish the saint would, very probably, pay no attention to him. He knew his time was come, and prepared for death, and died like a good Catholic and sincere Chistian. The part of “Tenore Principale” he had written for me, but never having heard me sing, he composed the principal arias merely form what he bad heard of me from others; and surely never was music better adapted. He wrote for me a beautiful scena, con coro, that had a wonderful effect, it was so delightfully instrumented. I regret I could not get a copy of it. The copyst was so outrageously exacting in his demands that I was obliged to leave Venice without the aria. Poor Cimarosa left the opera of “Artemisia” unfinished. Mayer, the celebrated German composer, was requested to finish it, but he, from real modesty, refused. The opera was performed in its unfinished state. The music was applaused to the very echo, mingled with the tears of the audience. Unfortunately the poem was very mediocre. I assisted at Cimarosa's funeral, sung a song, and in a “Quartetto” composed by Bertoni. A funeral movement was performed and, in the midst of the most solemn and soul-striking harmonies, little snatches of musical phrases, taken from celebrated operas of the composer – from the “Gli Orazi e i Curiazi” and “Il matrimonio” were heard from some wind instruments placed in a distant part of the church: subdued in “pianissimo” seeming to come from the clouds – they has a startling and uncarthy effect. My heart trembled and tears started from my eyes. Little did I then think it would he my fate to sing in the last immortal operas of two of the greatest composers – Cimarosa and Weber – I am, Sir, your most obedient servand, Giovanni Braham."
Dwight's Journal of Music”, Boston, Saturday, January 27, 1872.

According to her biography, Joan had memorization problems, not with the music, but with the libretto. There's some episodes she left rehearsals crying for have troubles with the words on libretto. However, this didn't stopped her to add more roles to the repertoire as his age progressed. And Anna Bolena it was one of the last roles she learnt in the eighties. Patina created by Alexander Nurulaeff for one of our customers from Sweden: E.J.  I always work listening to music. Thanks to music I create different and unique colors and shades. Like this pair of Maftei's shoes that I painted by hand while listening to Verdi's opera "Rigoletto". My favorite registration of this opera is DECCA's: Rigoletto Joan Sutherland · Luciano Pavarotti Sherrill Milnes · Martti Talvela Ambrosian Opera Chorus London Symphony Orchestra Richard Bonynge Int. Release 30 Jan. 1985 Please write in comments if music is important to you. You can also give the name for this Patina. Old Books and TeddyBoy
Two old books are resting against TeddyBoy's side. The book with the whiter pages is Italian...published in 1764 in Venice and contains the libretto (words) of Italian poet, Pietro Metastasio, who mostly wrote operas. This guy rocked...he wrote the words to 800 operas including the words to an opera by Handel. The copy I have is a 12th printing. Opera back then was the equivalent of rock n roll today.
The other book is a publication of the Psalms, published in 1815 in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
As you can see the pages in the Psalms book are disintegrating. They're very brown, fragile, ripping easily, and have worm holes because the paper was made out of wood pulp. Wood pulp paper disintegrates. Although a great step forward in getting loads of paper made quickly, it was a huge step backward in the quality of paper.
The Italian book’s pages were made out of old linen and rags; and bleached in fields under the bright sunlight. The paper is in great condition even though it is about 250 years old.

I loved going to the Opera to see the Tosca at Copenhagen Opera House a few months ago. I’m looking forward to being able to go again! I love learning and expanding my culture in an alternative way, as it develops different areas of the brain 🌸 I remember that I that period I was studying a lot and going to the Opera really made my brain breathe! Have you ever felt like that? • • • #opera #copenhagenoperahouse #tosca #music #classicalmusic #culture #cultural #explore #intellectual #elegant #elegantclothes #dress #italian #italianopera #italianstyle #operalover #theatre #sunset #sea #danishdesign #architecture #danisharchitecture #wine #winelover #date (at Copenhagen Opera House) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCVdb1EpCaH/?igshid=10ekk8b1d4nd8

. Listening to it a second (and more attentive) time. In other words, giving it a second chance (the results of the first audition left very unequal and contrasting impressions: from the outset, the general concept of the work and Pappano's tempi "breathe" only at times with my auditory memory of the work, and believe me, that helps little) ... . #operaendisco #studiorecording #otello #giuseppeverdi #antoniopappano #jonaskauffman #carlosalvarez #federicalombardi #sonyclassic #opera #italianopera #óperaitaliana #tenorkaufmann (en Cartagena, Murcia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBqg3V3FhxL/?igshid=1fgnybgltl4u5

Red is my power colour today. Eyeshadow is “Stigmata” and “Sabbath” by Kat von D from the Saint and Sinner palette, lipstick is “Armageddon” by Black Moon Cosmetics. I’ve not worn red makeup in the longest time, I felt that today, I needed the power and inspiration for my voice lesson - especially tackling such a powerful aria as “O Mio Fernando” from La Favorita. I’m determined to conquer it. #operagoth #gothgirl #gothgirls #gothoperasinger #metallic #BlackMoonCosmetics #gothgoth #red #DonizettisDiva #DonizettisDivas #LaFavorita #ItalianOpera #BelCanto #GaetanoDonizetti #MetallicMakeup #girlswithpiercings
