When Salomé was first published in February 1893, the Pall Mall Budget magazine asked Beardsley for a drawing in response. Oscar Wilde saw Aubrey Beardsley’s illustrations for the first English translation of his 1891 play Salomé. He wasn’t impressed at first: “They are cruel and evil, and so like dear Aubrey, who has a face like a silver hatchet, with grass-green hair,” he said, in typical acid-tongued manner. “They are like the naughty scribbles a precocious schoolboy makes on the margin of his copybooks.” We, on the other hand, love them. The 2023 Sundance Film Festival has come to a close, and the winner's circle is much more diverse than the award shows have ever been. This is especially true for the Oscars this year which has several notable snubs of women creators and people of color. This year was no different.
