Promotion Evaluation Two
Over the last few weeks, I feel like I have gained a great amount of insight, knowledge, and appreciation about all that goes into any show and exhibition never mind a shared graduate show with three different classes that had not really interacted before.
I think the first hurdle faced was the space in which the degree show was to take place in, this was up in the air for what seemed a very long time, especially when you’re trying to envision what type of space we would be working with. When the space was finally chosen the layout seemed to be the next obstacle to tackle. The class went down to the space and started measuring out how much room each of us would have. Alan also helped by drawing out layout ideas and passing them onto the group via Angus. Once a layout design was secured, the team of Angus, Charlotte and Amy began the task of meeting with the Design students to assess and gather each students’ requirements. After several long meetings the group came back with a layout – that largely panned out to the final installation with only a few people swapping to spaces. This was because some of us had to share which resulted in a few conversations on whose work would look good next to someone else, all issues were resolved by simply swapping a few people around, till we ended up with the best solution that was available.
Along with our own personal self-promotion that most of us took up via platforms like Instagram, we also exchanged our Instagram handles with the students from design so we could have a look at each other’s work and support each other. The Instagram take over that was handled by Arianne went very well and I feel like each post had a good reach and feedback. I think the most successful the take over felt was once we had the posters that we could share along with the dates and showtimes. This felt like a successful moment as we finally could share the dates and start inviting people along.
Installation went well for me personally, I did have to switch spaces, so I wasn’t sure where I was going to be placed until I arrived. My space was to be shared with Arianne, which I was really happy with as I felt that our work was easily distinguished but also well balanced and neither persons work was fighting for dominance over the other. As the type and size of space wasn’t confirmed until quite close to the installation date, personally I was not able to picture the space. I had done digital mock sketches with a “gallery wall” style of installation. Once I seen the space, I knew I could stretch out a lot more. After painting the walls, I laid out the paintings and with the helps or Lorna, Charlotte, Sumayyah, Ghita, Karly and Lynn we finally settled on a layout that allowed each painting room to breathe and have their own space. I also placed my six vessels on a small plinth in the corner of my space. I used D-rings on the back of my painting which had a wire to hang the canvases, this was quite easy to install as I simply measured the tension of the wire and adjusted the nail height. Overall, I was really pleased with my space and how installation went, and I think that we all banded together as a cohesive unit which has resulted in an impressive show even though we faced quite a few challenges.

Personal expectiations for degree show / evaluation
My project which I have yet to name , is about my personal memories and outlook on them now . my project stems from the theme of domesticity and home life and I have chosen the route of childhood memories. As memories can sometimes get foggy or feel tarnished by more resent occurrences, I have distilled the memories down and I am representing them with individual unlikely items in still life oil paintings with plain backgrounds.
For the degree show I believe I will have seven paintings of a variety of sizes that I will be showing , the size ranges from 40cm x 40 cm to 60cm x 90cm.
I am also interested in displaying small tins that contain a small pillow that I will infuse with a smell that I associate strongly with my childhood memories. Each tin will be representing a person from my family. The tins will be an interactive element of my display.
I would like the painting to be displayed in a gallery wall style with an organic random layout, featuring the largest painting in the centre. I would hang the paintings by a wire that I will attach to the back of each canvas . I will also have a back up plan of large canvas hanging command hooks just in case but the wire on the back of the painting should be strong enough to hold the weight of each canvas. To be able to hang the canvas via wire I will need to hammer a nail/s into the wall for each painting. For the display of small tins/pots I will need a plinth that I can have nearby the paintings, I have opted for small metal tins/pots over glass jars to reduce the safety risk of unnecessary glass.
The paintings will need to be very secure to ensure that they will not fall of cause an injury to anyone or knock over anyone else’s installation or damage the painting itself. The plinth will also need to secure and put in a sensible place to avoid blocking the way or could fall over and again cause injury or damage other students work. I will also put a note on the plinth inviting guests to smell the small tubs which will make it clear that there will be a smell within the container in case anyone is sensitive to perfume scents.
To be able to present the work in this manner I will need a hammer and nails, wire and some brackets or hooks, some physical assistance to hand the painting to make sure they are secure and level. I will also need access to a plinth and potentially white paint if the plinth needs tidied up.
I will also have backup plans such as different methods of hanging the canvases such as command canvas hangers and also an alternative way of displaying the small containers such as maybe a small shelf that could be fitted on the wall also .

Promotion Module Evaluation one
To begin with I researched Upcoming exhibitions in Glasgow, this was to gain knowledge about what was included in the advertisements about the shows. I will also be looking at artists personal websites and social media pages to gain an insight on how they promote their work and shows. I will also be looking at my own Instagram to look at how I have promoted my own work/shows from the past.
The first website I went to was GoMA, I found the section of the upcoming events and exhibitions. The first show was Elizabeth Price “SLOW DANS”, next was “TASTE!” which is a collaborative show of “live archiving” including works by Andy Warhol, Andy Goldsworthy, Sarah Forrest. For Price’s “SLOW DANS” the website explains that the show consists of 3 screen based videos : KOHL, FELT TIP & THE TEACHERS. The site also lists the dates: 27th Jan – 1th May 2023, it also shows that it is a free event and located in the Gallery of Modern Art – a link to a map is also provided. It also gives a brief artist statement. “TASTE!” page is set up in a similar manor, with the location – Gallery 2, Dates 14th June 2017- Present. It explains that the show is a collection of work which showcases the work of a curator, an example of how exhibitions are organized and arranged.
The artists website/social media I chose to look at was Sophie Tea, as I feel like she uses social media well especially newer forms such as TikTok. Tea is a UK based artist, who has exhibited all over the world and shows her process on TikTok. Recently she has been running a project where she uses old lesser quality canvas’s she has spare in her studio. She does quick paintings and viewers have the chance to win those paintings if they go to her website, sign up to her newsletter and like the paintings. Which ultimately benefits her and promotes her website while also the viewer potentially benefiting if they are the among the lucky few who gets one of the paintings.

Looking at my own Instagram, I have posted the announcements for a show where I have also featured the post on my story. I also share the posts on my private page and use hashtags to try and attract the type of audience I feel would be the best suited.

Looking at how galleries are promoting exhibitions.
GoMA
"TASTE!" Seems to be a great example of curation . Taking pieces of work from various artist and placing them together to unite them under an overarching theme.

Analog vs Digital
• 3D/ being their in person allows for more understanding than 2D on a screen .
• Demataterlisiation - merge of past and present in person experience . K.C
• Overload of information, trends overtaking the experts . E.D
• Why not both ?
• Using both is inevitable, especially going forward . Galleries utilise social media to advertise an exhibition regardless. Digital is not the enemy of tradition. G.P
• Technology supporting artworks.
• Both are as important as the other. In this current time artists can "fall behind" without social media ?
• The use of A.I for future curation.
• Personal touch is important when it comes to art. A.D
• Flyers are harder to share than an Instagram post . A.D
• Importance of imperfections .
• In this day both are just as important as social media plays a big part in promoting and setting trends . R.A

How as artist do we engage the audience? (Visual learning)
Here is what people said
• Have the pieces be interactive
• does the pieces tell the story ?
• Working from concepts that we think need addressed or to be brought the viewers attention. E.D
• Artists curate their own work to engage with the people that their subject matter connects with .
• Abundance of information makes it harder to shock or engage. A.D
• Bring concepts into people's conversations
• Keeping the audience interested- don't be predictable - visually excite the audience. R.A
• Sometimes it's best to go with your own intuition towards your art. It can create pressure if your always making for an audience, instead of yourself. Makes the work less likely to follow trends or other people ! Inturn making your work unique to you , and new to others ? G.P
• Isn't it subjective it is down to the audience in how the engage.
• Creating narrative in work.
• You're chosen audience - the space your work exists in . All impacts engagement - including the audiences own personal perspectives.

Problem of abundance
Here is what people said
• More creativity should be a good thing? A.D
• How do curators choose ?
• The role of the curator for the future of curation.
• Issue of perspective - poverty + lack of resources still exist outwith over-consumption G.P
• Too many choices, someone needs to make the selection
• When does it become too much ?
• Our choice is removed by algorithms/curators to make the decision. E.D
• Making "Junctions" between artworks becomes easier with abundance creating "new" ideas do not . A.D
• An abundance of too much creativity can lead to art becoming lackluster .
• Where do we find the value ? The curators job becomes more difficult with more choice. K.C
• Where does the creativity stop how to know when there is enough. Curators choice becomes a difficult role. R.A
