Hi! This isn't an ask, actually, but I just wanted to express my love for your art style. I went back to read Swifthawk's chance : Friend and Family, and I realised that your drawings have grown more and more incredible over the years. I'm a huge fan of it,honestly. The way your linework grew finer and the colours became a tad more natural (not that it wasn't before, but I loved that particular change of scheme so much) it all just blew my mind really. Thank you so much for this comic,love you!!

AAAAH THANKS SO MUCH ;v;!!! It has kind of lead to some issues, lol. My old 12/week output was based on simpler pages; a simpler style, only one layer of shading, and fairly quick and cheap backgrounds. But since I've improved a lot, I'm putting in more effort per page but a part of me still compares my reduced output to my old one, and I end up feeling discouraged that I'm not finishing enough pages fast enough.

This all to say that I'm so glad the improvement shows, and I'm so happy to offer higher quality pages every week!! ;v; This message just means so much to me given it's been something I stress over a lot. Thank you so so much!! <33

Do you have any nicknames? Not stereotypical ones like “honey, sweetie”, but ones that maybe a character won’t like at first but grows to love??

Character Nickname Ideas

Hmmm this is actually a tricky one to answer.

Each character will have their own set of cultural backgrounds, quirks, strengths, weaknesses and relationship dynamics, which can all contribute to a nickname.

Here are some common things writers do for nicknames:

Shorten their given name. Mireya becomes Rey. Christopher becomes Chris.

Alter their given name. If you add a “y” sound, it implies the person using the nickname thinks of the character as young or childlike. So Alexa becomes Lexie. William becomes Billy.

Base their nickname on a physical trait. This can be straightforward or ironic. The large man is Tiny. The pretty girl named Honor is Bell/Beauty.

Pick a personality trait. School kids might call your main character Sassy Cassy. The con man might be called Prince Charming because of his smooth-talking skills.

Base their nickname on their profession or an accomplishment. So many characters are called Doc, Prof, or Chairman.

Base it on Monsters: ie. Balrog, Loch, Golen, Orthros, Baal, etc.

Base it on Mythology. Lots of authors have used names from Greek/Roman mythology, and readers have loved it!

Here are two personal examples:

Use initials. My name is Junhui Lee, and those who aren't familar with Asian names struggle to pronoun it correctly. So I just go by "JH"

In Korean culture, (1) people's names are usually three chracters: ie. Jun+hui+Lee and (2) We put surnames in front, not at the back of our names: ie. Lee Junhui, not Junhui Lee. Close friends would address each other as "surname + first character of the given name". So my friends would call me Lee Jun.

A character not liking their nickname

Doesn't necessary mean it has to be a funny nickname. They can dislike it because they somehow feel like only their parents/siblings call them that, or they feel childish, or the tone in which the other person says it is too teasing.

Depends on the origin and meaning behind the nickname. Was it made up by bullies in primary school and its just happened to stick? Was it given to them by their late grandparents? The anme

...So, when I first tried using this picrew with Abby and Vincent, I thought 'Vincent' looked a lil too baby and just had a thought of... what if I just made it Abby being hugged by one of her sons?

(Abby with her oldest boy Theo (also sometimes called Teddy), named after his uncle, of course)

...which of course spiraled into making more 'Mommy and Me' pics, bc I thought it was a cute idea.

Houki and her lil boy Shigenari (he has the same mole as his dad, but this picrew didn't have an option for moles so *shrugs*)

Thea with her lil boy Vinny (also named after his uncle, at his dad's insistence.)

And her lil girl Mary Louise by Arthur.

Then I did use the picrew as intended with couples that made these kids (plus Clara and Nokto, who don't have kids yet)

Theory of Earls by Kathleen Ayers: Maggie plays the piano so stirringly that apparently it borders on wanton for her Victorian audience. The hero Tony is also a gifted pianist and this book features piano fingering, piano oral, and a ruination... on a piano.

Nine Rules to Break When Romancing A Rake by Sarah MacLean: Ralston is secretly a great pianist and he's playing very angstily when Callie sneaks into his house to request that he give her her first kiss.

Patience by Lisa Valdez: Both Matthew and Patience are cellists, I think they duet at some point, and there's a this super hot scene where she's in his lap with her legs spread and they're both playing his cello which leads to more.

Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas: Helen is an accomplished pianist and plays for Rhys in the prior book while he's recovering from his injuries and he's *entranced*. In Marrying Winterborne, Rhys also tries to bribe her into sleeping with him by offering to buy her a new piano. It does work. Kind of.
