I think it's more interesting to analyse this with what's happening to carlando slowly being overtaken by landoscar as primary lando ship slowly and the tldr is ships change when dominant perceptions of the character changes. (obviously all the ships listed here are still hugely popular, nobody felled off, I'm talking about a change in trends)

when DTS first came out, daniel was already primed to be the star. he was the personality, he was funny, handsome, likeable and the story of future world champion vs talented young teammate the team is prioritising is compelling. max, on the other hand, was this young and brash, hungry for winning at any cost, seemingly asshole but then surprise he has a tragic childhood backstory and what he really needs is to be loved (cock in hole) to fix him. if you watch the teammate compilations from that era, maxiel just makes sense. max who is 😠 on DTS, is googly eyed giggling at everything DR says even when it's not funny. how can two guys who are so competitive on track yet have such a great relationship off track? they gotta fuck it out. prime rpf time.

carlando while less competitive has that same teammate narrative, older guy falling in the role of caretaker while the younger guy is socially awkward, anxious baby with their inside jokes (cabron) to be fixed with love (🍆🍩)

the reason why dando never popped off the way maxiel and carlando did because they already had each other's archetypes. lando already had the older teammate top with carlos and daniel already had the younger teammate to charm with max, so dando never got to get big before lando started beating DR and DR wasn't a competitive teammate so the narrative was a lesser one

come 2022. max verstappen is reigning world champion. DR has not only not won any, but is currently flopping at mclaren. the influx of new f1 fans after the whirlwind of a season that was 2021 and DTS's popularity has exploded. and max's competition now is the pretty boy from Ferrari. the narrative of DR fixing Max who is 🥺 from bad parenting tag my behated just doesn't add up. That story is already from 3 teammates ago. Max is now the guy to beat, he's the guy who is winning. He's big, broad, confident and dominating the grid. I will give lestappies credit here, they ran such a potent propaganda campaign that if you were a new fan in 2022 you would totally believe that charles in Ferrari is obviously going to win the championship next year and not this is a freak ferrari good year. Now charles is the 🥺 one with an even more tragic backstory and looking so beautifully devastated after ferrari fucks up his races he was supposed to win, monaco! he is now the new hole 2 be fixed with love and max is the top now.

here's my hot take. lestappen probably wouldn't be as big if max had a more fandom approved fuckable teammate for a consistent amount of time. pierre and alex and checo in 2021 were teammates far too short to really get its own standing and compete with maxiel. and fandom never bit on chestappen because once again, daniel already filled that older teammate for max role. (and there's a whole thing ab beauty standards and perceived femininity and popular yaoi ships mirroring m/f dynamics)

why carlando is still going strong is because carlos and lando still frequently hang out, he was at his family's wedding, his dad praises lando all the time so new fans can see there's a whole boatload of lore to dig in. maxiel don't party in the same circles or hang out v much, so to a newer fan charles winking at max after pole is easier to get into.

but the surge in landoscar popularity is because lando's now certified frat boy DJ and now oscar is the younger, super competitive teammate who has a kind of crush on lando, they're both cute! now oscar is the kind of socially awkward always sleepy one, while lando's partying with the whole grid. the lestappen and landoscar appeal of the theyre Equals and "idiots in love" shedding off their previous wide eyed anxious virgins in f1 characterization for the new era, as their perception by fandom grows so does the ship

this ^ is both a good & bad thing, as she is also, as you may have heard, a bloodsport tournament participant! she kind of. needs her magic for that. & well she keeps jobbing really badly despite being as powerful as she is. because of how much she uses her magic on the regular. the reason it's a good thing is that her magic can overflow & while there hasn't yet been a point where it did it's not fully clear what will happen if it does.

see her hair? it's kind of like a gauge. you can tell how she's doing on magic reserves depending on how "filled up" it is. the more purple, the more powerful! & what happens if her hair is completely purple? philly really wants to know

read this over new years and had an absolutely amazing time with it. immortal days is a webtoon you can read here. (its free, however you need an account.).

on the absolute surface, it is a sorta-detective duo webtoon. they engage in funny high jinks, things explode, people get shot, drugs get traded, etc etc. it follows its two mortal protags, as they attempt to survive in a world in which humanity has become immortal.

it has a very solid plot, is not afraid to get ugly but does so responsibly, there is inspired and lovingly made worldbuilding, an interesting cast, and it is. well. Loudly inclusive of many types of people. very very loudly and kindly so.

i would describe the protag duo, myeol and phill, like this: one of them loves dogs. the other one has the obsession, drive, and recklessness of an unchallenged malinois. theyre fun to be around.

what they do is not petplay but it makes you think

anyhow more thoughts:

the author has an incredible grasp of comedic and dramatic timing and framing in comic page panels and frequently creates extremely impactful compositions

for how impossible of a concept it is, immortality is treated as both a practical problem and philosphical issue, which is incredibly fun and lends a sense of plausibility

the main protag duo Constantly get shipbaited throughout the entire series. theyre both explicitly bi. its pure bait, will or wont they, for the love of the game and without anyone holding them back from being getting together actually. just mental illness

you know who gets together? EVERY GIRL..... the women in this are almost all fucking each other. honestly very beautiful

not only are the protagonists dealing with feelings of sadness, fear, distrust, and a sense that theyre not equal to everyone around them; they also get to express their anger. they get to feel singled out and are allowed to be frustrated. they have strong opinions on how society has to change, hell, phill is extremely radical about it. those thoughts are usually an absolute taboo. we get raised to feel like burdens, are treated with pity by others, and get taught to put ourselves second. but within the depiction of this anger lies the affirmation that negative defensive feelings are normal and natural. rightful, even.

(and they only have each other to share that experience with. so thats how potent the yaoi is.)

that aside, the author also loves to pick up the topic of physical conditions in a world where people regenerate from anything. what would heal without issue? what would still be livelong conditions? how do people in-universe cope with them? and what about mental illness and trauma that just cannot be recovered from physically? a surprising amount of time is invested in exploring this.

🪓 If I could design a first trial, huh? Man... I've been asking myself this, actually, because of my Mr Beast AU (I'm just calling it that, it doesn't have anything to do with Mr Beast) and I uh, haven't had any good, concrete ideas yet. My most interesting one is thematically potent for the characters I put in it. Ironically it's also the least clear. It's in my notes as "something to do with the moon" so. I guess the only one I've actually thought out is the mirror room puzzle. It's pretty much the one Sara did before the first game, but with communication issues this time! One contestant is in each room, and they have to talk with each other to make the rooms mirror each other, before the time runs out. Normal stuff. I've also got a character in just. A normal escape room. So that's fun.

💭 Which AU is my favorite? You're killing me here, my god. So. Obviously there's my survivors AU, the one I've made a few sketch comics for. Both Sara and Shin survive, they can't get rid of each other, they become friends on accident, etc. etc. Ryoko is there. I might be bringing Midori back for that one too but ehhh idk. The stuff I've written for that is interesting but it's straying too far into whump territory for this AU. It's a cool way to fuck with their character arcs though.

There's also my two new silly AUs, YTTD Hoodwinked AU and YTTD Nerdy Prudes Must Die AU. They're pretty fun. I don't think they're my favorites though. Oh and Ranpo in the Death Game AU but I haven't touched that one for a while. Not since the yaoi.

And then there's the other big contender. The Mr Beast AU. AKA I put 100 fictional characters in the Your Turn to Die death game (said in the mr beast intro voice)! Oh man. What a whopper. And I have lore reasons for it too. Now picture this: The death game is over. Sara wins. She goes on with her life, distraught for a while, but then only numb. When the time comes, she takes over ASU-NARO. With her at the helm, research pivots from recreating people artificially to regaining them for real. Flesh and blood. That's right baby, they're playing 5D chess with multiversal time travel, and they're about to find out what happens when that shit goes wrong. Meanwhile, in 14 other worlds, shit goes haywire there too. The cast of YTTD wakes up in their old bodies, from the start of the death game, with all their memories intact. And a hundred newcomers awaken too.

Mm... I think the mr beast AU is more interesting to me currently, just because I loooove crossover AUs and banging my toys together like rocks. I put all my favorite niche media in there. We've got My Student Spirit, we've got Rhyme and Reason, we've got Ghost Junk Sickness, we've got 7Seeds. I even have The Neverending Story! We've got extra scientists, we've got actual robots, we have a cat with a job, there's a man who is literally a ghost and another who can talk to ghosts and they are both the nicest (lyinggg the ghost is an asshole. Just like me fr). And freaking out at the center of it all is our good old primary cast, trying to survive all over again.

I'm having fun with it. Tsukasa Tenma is dead. Herlock Sholmes is dead. Dima PAFL is dead and Dr. Temnova doesn't know yet. Olezha has a real body again but he can't go tell his roommate because his roommate is in the death game and they can't have people moving willy-nilly from the administrative side to the game side, now can they? Emu Ootori has blood on her hands. So does Kotaro Mita. Man I love this AU. I have to make something other than a spreadsheet for it.

🏆 Who do I think will win? Sara, obviously. I don't think there's any way that she doesn't. I don't think Keiji will, or Shin. If she does get to take someone with her, I think it'll be Gin in the logic route. I also think that maybe we'll get a choice in the emotion route. To save either Kanna or Gin. Which kid gets to live. Kinda fucked! But what about this game isn't lmao. Regardless, I'm excited to see what happens.

Jagged Pieces - A glimpse into Minato and Kujin’s friendship

Looking glumly into his half-filled cup of tea, Minato sighed. It had been a long day, and he just wanted to relax before going home to think about a new strategy for his next ANBU mission, as well as a lesson plan for his Genin to follow during his absence.

For once, Kujin was silently eating his dumplings, too aware of his friend’s exhaustion. They were content to just grab lunch in each other’s company, sometimes exchanging words about the array of food spread in front of them.

Kujin was about to hail the chief for a new round of grilled meat when a flash of light caught his attention. It was immediate – his mood soured and exasperation was written all over his face.

A new gaggle of fangirls were peeping on them.

Or, more specifically, on the oblivious blonde shinobi.

With a sigh, Kujin leant towards his friend, long crimson hair falling from his shoulder onto Minato’s, effectively blocking the sight of his barely moving lips as he whispered, “Brace yourself, a group of girls are ready to come at you.”

Tan fingers clenched around the teacup, the only sign of annoyance betraying the blonde’s aloof expression. Deeming his duty fulfilled, Kujin was about to go back to his food but Minato caught his elbow and tugged the redhead back towards him.

“Say, I’m a good friend, right?”

The Uzumaki rose an eyebrow. “Yeah,” he drawled, confused, stretching a hand to grab a dango stick.

“And how far are you ready to go for the wellbeing of this friendship?”

At that, Kujin turned his head towards Minato’s, almost bashing his nose against the blonde’s sharp jaw.

“I love you bro, really. But not enough to murder civilian.” He popped the dango stick in his mouth and then amended with a careless shrug, “not in plain day light, anyway.”

This earned him an arched eyebrow, followed by a pleased hum. It was always good to know your friends had your back.

“You’re nuts,” Minato said nonetheless. “But I’m not asking you to kill the fangirls. Just… pretend to kiss me. That way, they’ll think I’m not interested in the female population and will leave me alone at once.”

He knew it was an awkward request, and truth be told, Minato was expecting an extreme reaction –  something like Kujin falling from his seat in surprise and yelling how his lips were only made to be touched by big-breasted kunoichi.

Instead, the redhead blankly stared at him, the wooden spike from his dango dangling between his lips. “Dude,” he started thoughtfully, twirling the stick with his tongue before removing it and pointing it at his friend, “are you in love with me or something?”

There was a long silence before Minato felt the tell-tale pulse of a vein ready to burst at his temple. “Forget about it, I suddenly feel the intense urge to punch your teeth in.”

Kujin smirked, threw an arm around Minato’s shoulders and brought their faces closer, noses brushing together. “Ooh, so kinky Minato-chan. Do tell me more.”

Two tanned hands surged up and grabbed the Uzumaki’s collar. “I’m gonna ram a Rasengan up your ass, you little—”

The other man knocked their mouths together, biting the blonde’s lips in retaliation for the mean words. Minato froze, and at the same moment, wails and cries of shock were heard from their peeping toms.

Then Kujin leant back, a roguish smile firmly in place before sticking his tongue at the fangirls while giving them the finger. Many ran away with tears in their eyes.

With a  proud huff, he turned towards his friend, “No need to thank me Minato, you can now eat in pea—”

A punch met his cheek, and he tumbled to the floor as Minato slowly sat back down, left eyebrow ticking without control and hands clenching sporadically around his cold cup. Kujin crawled back onto his chair, an affronted scowl firmly in place on his face, ready to break the blonde’s nose. “The fuck, man! I totally did what you asked me, and this is the thanks I get?!”

A dark glare quailed any further complain from a now pouting Kujin.

“Pretend,” Minato hissed. “I said ‘pretend’, idiot. I can’t believe you actually kissed me.”

The pout didn’t relent as the redhead puffed out his cheeks, petulant. “Pssh, why pretend when you can have the real deal! At least, now, they’ll leave you alone. Ya know, back in Uzushio, kissing on the lips is a common way to greet close friends!”

And Kujin went back to his pastries and meat, babbling about culture differences and how weird people from the continent were with public display of affection, while Minato brooded about idiotic friends, ruing the day he took pity on the his fellow exiled and showed him sympathy when they were kids.

The next day, the rumor went about that Kujin had been seen molesting a distressed Minato, and that the two were in an abusive relationship – though it wasn’t sure who was the abused one.

Minato swore it was the last time he’d ask Kujin for a favor, and doubled his effort to not be caught in the company of the red leech. Kujin, on his part, found it hilarious and privately decided that fueling the rumor mill was a fun way to pass time between missions.

Two months later, Jiraiya’s book featuring two dashing shinobi fighting for dominance in their coupling became a best seller.

(And so this signed the day the two exiled began to be seen by a certain writer as potent inspiration for his trash books. Yes, Jiraiya, in this universe, writes yaoi porn based on his student and his BFF.

Just a height chart of a few of my OCs! There are all my Error OCs (not including hybrids)! Just some info about Error and these nerds because I love them a lot okay. Under the Cut: More info about Error and each of these guys in particular!

Error are essentially humanized computer glitches! An Error is born when a cyber elf basically "shoves" some kind of data out of cyberspace magically, instead of properly deleting it. This somehow makes an Error, despite all logic behind it. Magic is weird like that. Thus, Error are actually mostly magic, their blood being a rainbow-shimmering white gas, aka pure magic. This shit can be used to create potions which can give people that particular Error's abilities. However, these guys can look hella weird and frequently struggle with mental illness, though they can also be way to fucking powerful. They are also also already approximately 6 years old from the moment they are born, so to find the amount of time an Error has actually existed, you just subtract 6 from their "age." So, technically speaking, although Nya is considered 12 years old, she's technically only existed for 6. 

Blanc Anatomical Anomalies: No left arm and transparent spotting! Occupation: Founder and Leader of Motherboard, the Town of the Error. He is the first Error to ever exist. A lot of things happened in his past, including losing his leg and becoming a massive grump, but he has his people's best intentions at heart! Nya and Brother Blu belong to his folder, which is what Error call their adoptive families, so he is essentially their adoptive father figure. Brother Blu Anatomical Anomalies: "Lightning scars" covering most torso and legs. Occupation: Professor of Math at UUU. Really just a super swell guy, who always worries about everyone. Does accidentally jump-scare people in class with his teleporting, especially since he does it right onto the backs of student's seats if they're not paying attention. He's always worried about his little sister, Nya, since she's always getting into trouble. Elten Anatomical Anomalies: Fading/dissipating body parts. Occupation: UUU Student. Alternates between being a massive grump or an excitable fun-lover. Only reason she dresses nicely is her friends stocked her entire closet and she's not allowed to go shopping on her own. Glew Anatomical Anomalies: Baby feet and patches. Occupation: Tentative Troublemaker. Huge klutz because of his disproportionately small feet. Quite shy actually, and spends most of his time running errands for his folder or getting dragged along on Nya's misadventures. Lancove Anatomical Anomalies: Ribcage Yaoi Hands McGee. Occupation: Ringmaster of a Circus. Runs a fabulous circus (which I really need to name already), and might be more than a little nutter butter. Because of his power, he can keep all of his employees inside of him for safe and easy transport! And keep them in there, forever and ever... now where did Blanc go off to? Neapin Anatomical Anomalies: Mouths! Mouths everywhere! Occupation: Cannibalistic Serial Killer yay. Most Error are pretty harmless. Neapin is not. Occupation: Chief Troublemaker. All Nya wants is to have fun! Sure, she might break a lot of rules doing that, but she doesn't have any bad intentions! She's always dragging around her pals Glew, Tak, and Yosh on her adventures, though everyone is he bestie as far as she is concerned! Tak Anatomical Anomalies: Weird marks and extra long right arm. Occupation: Co-Conspirator. Almost as exuberant as Nya, Tak tries her best to help people out where she can! She really loves her friends (no matter how much she ends up fighting with Yosh), and has a bad habit of throwing her limbs at people. Tima Anatomical Anomalies: Digitigrade legs and moving "blood" patterns on her skin. Occupation: None really. She hasn't been outside of Lancove's chest in about 40 years. Doesn't have much social interaction outside of the circus performers, and generally kinda a grumpy grandma, although she looks much younger. Her blood/code can be used a potent youth potion, so she would be considerably valuable to anyone with a lack or morals. Yosh Anatomical Anomalies: Cracks on skin. Occupation: Anti-Trouble-Making Troublemaker. Super pessimist and general unfunner, Yosh just gets wrapped up in a lot of trouble because of Nya and Tak. But he loves his friends, so he usually just goes with it. Rink Anatomical Anomalies: Glow patches and 6 fingers per hand. Occupation: Paranoid Stay-at-Home Programmer. Suffers from extreme paranoia that as soon as they leave home, someone can and will murder them. And they will be dead. On the off-chance they do go out though, the carry a massive amount of balloons full of their "blood" with them inside their jacket. That way they can actually use their powers without bleeding out.
