Disneyland / Part 1...The Journey! - Newsies (Pride) Month . Day 9
( all ) + ( modern ) + ( hc story )
a/n: oh my do i love a good road trip // also sorry this is split up, i just ran out of time but i wanted to give y’all something
( this is part one but imma post the second part soon, so this is the journey and the next part is them actually at disneyland )
warnings: mentions of intimacy // minor cussing
background: Every year the newsies all get together and go on their annual Disneyland trip. They drive from Manhattan to Anaheim because it’s cheaper than buying 20+ plane tickets. They also have a collective jar in the lodging house that everyone puts money into to help pay. Davey plans the whole thing for months and somehow things still go wrong. It’s never not a wild ride with their family. But every year they still enjoy it.
——————————————————————————
it’s damn near impossible to squeeze everyone in one car unless they rented out a bus which didn’t fit into budget
but
they also couldn’t afford another car
so they just piled everyone into one van
that’s right
29 people in one van
davey bought a van a few years back that could fit everyone semi-comfortably before they had so many people
it was a big van, made for seating 18 people technically
but new people kept coming and they made a vow to never turn down someone in need
they also added partners and siblings and whoever else
so it was tough fitting 11 more people in an already packed van, but they did it
was it safe? no.
was it comfy? no.
did it work? sure.
they had curtains on the windows so police wouldn’t see in
and blankets and pillows on the floor for everyone sitting and laying and sleeping
they also put up a sheet across the back of the first 3 seats to create a wall between the adults and the children
also cause Jack is paranoid of the police finding out
but they keep it up high enough to slide snacks under the gap whenever people asked
Darcy drives most of the time since he is the best driver
Bill and Davey sit next to him in the two front seats and give directions
Jack sits on the floor between Davey’s legs and guards the snacks
they don’t stop at hotels
cause dear god that’d be a whole other budget they can’t deal with
so they just switch between the four people in the front driving and go continuously
occasionally stopping at rest stops, food places, etc.
the back is where it got crazy
the first row consisted of Crutchie against the window, Buttons in the isle seat, and Kenny on the floor next to them
behind them was Katherine against the window, Sarah in the isle, Smalls and Sniper in the gap, and Finch in the single seat on the other side
the third row was Specs against the window with Romeo in the isle, Henry in the gap on the floor, and Jojo and Tommy Boy sitting on each other’s lap sharing the single seat
behind them was Albert against the window and Elmer in the isle, with Bart and Myron in the gap, and Mush and Kid Blink sharing the single seat
then the back row
oh my the back row
Spot sat against the window behind the single seats with Race on his lap, Hotshot sat on the opposite side with Mike halfway on and halfway off his lap, and they stuck poor Ike in the middle
bless his soul
and Les just randomly found spots on the floor wherever he could fit himself
the ride was eventful, to say the least
there were a lot of games played
the people on the floor played uno, go fish, and other card games
while the people in the seats played i spy, the alphabet game, word association, would you rather, 21 questions, never have i ever, and the oh so popular “shut the fuck up, i’m trying to sleep”
they played punch-buggy for a bit but that had to stop on account of everyone getting hurt and Davey yelling at them
Davey also counted his lucky stars he set up that sheet because everyone’s favorite game is padiddle
everyone played—except for les cause he was too young, also if you were asleep you automatically didn’t count cause that’s only fair—and it was insanity
the people on the floor would fly up as soon as they had a chance to make sure they were safe
it was their only continuous game throughout the entire trip
the worst time of all was during hour 22 when everyone was going crazy and they all started singing
the look in Davey’s eyes was priceless
he didn’t even know how to react
he’s just glad he didn’t have to be back there
god bless his ability to drive
in the front—while Darcy was driving—Bill would rest his head on Darcy’s shoulder or place a soft hand on his leg
nothing too distracting
they couldn’t risk an accident
Jack could fit his whole body in front of Davey’s seat
for how packed it was, it was a pretty spacious van
but when Jack got tired of laying he would sit up and rest his head on Davey’s seat between his legs
and Davey would pet his hair and hold the side of his face
or he would sit upright, leaning his back against the seat and have Davey play with his hair or lean his head back far enough for Davey to place a kiss on his lips
none of them even wanted to think about what was happening in the back
Specs read almost the entire time
Romeo would cuddle up on his lap and beg for attention but Specs would just pet his hair and continue on
they exchanged kisses every time Specs finished a chapter
both Mush and Kid Blink as well as Jojo and Tommy Boy periodically switched who was on whose lap for comfortablilty
they also sometimes just sat on the floor or hovered above the tiny gap between the wall and the seat for extra space
every time Elmer slept he’d curled his legs up on the seat and place his head in Albert’s lap
Albert just rested his head against the window and put his arms around Elmer, holding him
at one point they forgot other people were around and during one of Elmer’s special dreams he starting rubbing up on Albert’s thighs until he woke up to do more and saw Myron’s disappointing glare
Sarah and Katherine held each other a lot
Mush and Kid Blink exchanged more than a few kisses but what’s new
Jojo and Tommy Boy were saints to be next to because they just wrapped their arms around each other and kept to themselves
everyone was pretty tame with their relationships in the van
except for the back row
that’s why they got put in the back, so no one had to look at them
Hotshot and Mike were actually the tame ones
only in comparison to Spot and Race
Mike sat mostly on top of Hotshot
they were always touching
most of the time they just held each other
but other times they wanted more
they would makeout and grab around but nothing too crazy
they kinda knew the time and place
whenever they started doing anything Ike would just slide down to the floor and play cards with Bart and Myron
but Spot and Race
oh god
Race sat on Spot’s lap pretty much the entire time, only adjusting to sit more comfortably or sleep
sometimes Race would drop down to the floor and wrap himself around Spot’s legs
there were certain times when everyone was asleep
with the exception of whoevers turn it was to drive
usually the entire van slept at night cause they didn’t want to ruin their sleep schedules that bad
though they did take naps throughout the day
but there was one time when everyone was asleep except for Spot and Race
so they did what any dumbasses would do
suck dick in the back seat
yup
race ‘dumbass’ higgins dropped himself on the floor and tested how quiet they could be
no one woke up and they didn’t dare tell anyone
when they finished, Race wrapped himself in Spot’s arms like nothing happened and went to sleep with the rest of them
they stopped at so many mcdonald’s, 7/11’s, diners, and random rest stops
the first stop—hour 4—they found a rest stop and a few people had to pee so some people got out and stretched while others slept inside
they got back on the van and left
it took 18 minutes for them to realize they left Crutchie
“Buttons! How could you not notice your seat partner was missing!”
“that is not my job, I was asleep”
they turned around and picked him up
after that Davey made an alphabetized list of everyone and took role before they left any stop after that
it also became a joke within the group
after what felt like the car ride of a lifetime, they finally made it
at 10 o’clock at night
and seeing the disneyland sign was like arriving at heaven’s gates
when they got out so many boys flipped and jumped and ran around
just because they were so happy and they finally didn’t have to sit in a car waiting anymore
they were like children
they are children, but still
they got to the hotel, checked in, got their rooms, and slept for the night
but the next day was when the real fun was going to happen
part two of them actually at disneyland coming soon

My ASD Testing Experience
I promised that I would write up a post about my autism testing, so here goes. (And yes, I am SO counting this toward NaNoWriMo!)
When I arrived at the practice, the psychiatrist who I’d seen for my initial intake appointment took me back to her office and told me to pull a chair up to the desk.
The first task she had me do, after attempting to make small talk with me (which I am TERRIBLE at and crashed and burned, lol), was to arrange foam puzzle pieces to fit a pre-drawn puzzle. She gave me three pieces (it clearly called for like 9) and I placed them, then expected her to hand me more, but she didn’t until I asked her for them. I guess that kind of confused me. I saw notes in her file for me that mentioned a “confused expression”, and I think it was in reference to that.
Afterward, she took out a book and informed me that it had no words, that we were going to make up the story. I’m a good writer, but making up stories on the spot and telling them aloud is incredibly difficult for me.
The book was about these frogs whose lilypads suddenly started floating, and pretty soon these freaking frogs were zooming all over creation. Instead of telling a story like a story, I just pointed out things that I saw. “Those fish are like WHAT THE HECK and that turtle looks pretty pissed, and the frogs are still flying.” Yeah, it was a weird story.
Then she brought out a bag of very random objects, and informed me that we were each going to pick five of them and use them to tell a story, which was even more foreboding than the idea of turning the story of the wordless picture book into English.
She went first, with a sponge, a cocktail umbrella, a feather, a shoelace, and... I forget what else. Her story was about Mama Umbrella, her kid Spongebob, and Baby Feather. They went to the beach, and the mama told SpongeBob to watch Baby Feather. But he was annoyed with watching her and went off and did his own thing. Then Baby Feather crawled into the ocean and SpongeBob threw a rope (shoelace) in to save her. Mama Umbrella was really mad but she was glad her baby was okay.
I had no idea what to do so I stared at the items in the bag for a good while, until a morbid story came into my head and it was the only thing that I could think of. I used the car, a paper circle, the feather, a wooden block, and a toy dollhouse candle.
“Okay,” I said, “so there's people driving down the road in this car, and then the wife goes “I think I’m gonna light your birthday candles on the cake now, because that sounds like a great idea,” so she did, and then a bird (represented by the feather) distracted the driver and made him run over a pothole (the paper circle) and slam into a wall (the wooden block).” Cue lots of spitty explosion noises (jk I just said they exploded). So yeah, I’m sure that heightened her image of me a good bit. XD
We talked then about the trouble I’m having at work, how I keep getting told off for not being empathetic when truly, I am (usually- I mean there are LOTS of people I deal with who are just plain annoying/dumb). My tone does not sound kind enough, even though I’ve been trying.
She asked me about my dating life and I updated her on the nonexistence of any type of relationship prospects and how the last girl I dated ghosted me (she hasn’t texted me since November 1, if anyone's wondering).
She asked me what a friend was, and then she asked me what the difference was between a friend, and a co-worker. Well, that was tough. I told her I guessed co-workers I thought were my friends were just my favorite coworkers, because I never saw them outside of work?
She then asked me how emotions felt, and how I knew I was happy, or angry, or anxious, or sad, and made me explain examples of times when I had felt these things, and asked whether I thought other people felt the same things. She asked me if I had ever been picked on or bullied, and sadly, I had to tell her that my family were my worst bullies growing up. I told her how there were certain noises my siblings would make that really bothered and hurt me, and how they’d deliberately make those noises over and over just to watch me and laugh as I’d get tenser and tenser and finally run from the room, usually crying, to have a meltdown in my bedroom.
After all this, she was done with me, and I went back to the waiting room to wait for the IQ test guy. I’d never met him before, so it was hard to look at his face, but I don’t think he ever smiled. And when I’d try to make a joke he’d just stare at me in this analyzing way. I didn’t like him.
His office was tiny and plain and felt dingy, and he had some sort of white noise sound machine going, which bothered me but I couldn’t figure out how to say so. He said he hoped it didn’t bother me, but in a way that made me feel like it would be a huge inconvenience if I told him that it did.
The first thing he had me do was to take these blocks that had two red sides and two white sides, and the remaining two sides were divided into half red and half white, split into triangles. First he gave me four and showed me a pattern, and I had to recreate that pattern. I guess he thought I was capable after that because he gave me the rest of the nine total blocks and show me more and more complicated patterns that I had to recreate. I’m ashamed to say that there was one I almost didn’t get, because I legitimately forgot that I could turn the cubes. I was looking at them and thinking that they were all half red and half white, but I needed solid red and solid white. I told him I couldn’t do it, that it was actually impossible. I thought it was a trick. He asked if I wanted to skip it, but at the last second I remembered, oh, these things have different sides. :P so obviously I recreated it pretty quickly from there.
After that exercise, he asked me some math word problem questions, which I had to figure out in my head, without paper and pencil. At first they were easy, but then the questions got into asking basically what 15 percent of 60 is, and I almost said it was 15, but caught myself and guessed 10 (probably still wrong; I don’t even know how to do that with a calculator).
Then he had me repeat sequences of numbers. It started out simple: 2, 4. He gradually added one number art a time until he reached... I think the highest any of these went was 8 numbers. 5, 9, 2, 4, 3, 2, 6, 1. I’d repeat the numbers in order. After that, he had me repeat his sequences backward- so 3, 7, 8, 5 would be 5, 8, 7, 3. This was more difficult, especially when he got up to the 8- digit ones. And finally, he made me put the number sequences in order, but there were often multiples of the same number, which was Super Confusing. It wasn’t too hard up until the 7 or 8 digit ones, but then it started getting really impossible to remember all of the numbers: 4, 7, 9, 2, 6, 2, 7, 8 for example. I’m pretty sure I only said 7 digits for at least one 8 digit one, and I had to start over on several of them.
Finally, we were done with that awful task, and we moved on to the fresh hell of a book of shapes. The top half of the paper showed a shape, and the bottom half had 6 different shapes that I had to put together to make the top shape. The catch was, it always had to be 3 of the shapes- i couldn’t pick 2 that also made the same shape. It had to be 3, and they could never overlap. At first it was pretty easy- a square, a house shape, etc. Then they got more complicated - like one had a blue octagon inside a yellow triangle inside a red square. And they got more complicated from there on out, in the ways the shapes were divided. For example, there was an oval and the pieces were cut in such a way that the middle piece resembled a butt with crooked arms. And in many of the advanced ones, all or many of the options were similar, so you really had to be able to pay attention and visualize it, which was difficult, especially after my brain was wasted from all the other stuff.
At last, we finished that, and he gave me a self- assessment test for autism. The possible answers were 1 (Never True), 2 (Sometimes True), 3 (Often True), and 4 (Almost Always True). It was one of those fill- in- the- dot things. The questions were things such as I feel most comfortable when I am alone, I behave in ways that seem strange or bizarre to others, I get upset when there are a lot of things going on, When stressed I show rigid and inflexible patterns of behavior, I have good personal hygiene, I think of other people the same way that I think of objects, I am extremely sensitive to certain sounds, textures, or smells, I have a narrow range of interests, I talk or think about the same thing over and over.
When I finished that, we were done and I got to go home. I have a feedback session scheduled for the 11th, where I’ll actually get my diagnosis.
Overall, the experience was weird and tiring. I felt analyzed, which was obviously what was happening, and it made me kind of squirmy. And I felt patronized, which was just plain annoying. I went along with everything though, and I think I proved my autism, so now I’m just waiting on my official diagnosis so I can tell the world and actually have it as a reason why I can’t do or handle certain things (not an excuse; that is a different thing altogether, just saying).
Anyway, I’m sorry this was so long. If you made it to the end, here, have a virtual... I don’t know, brownie, cookie, hug, pickle, whatever you’d like to have a virtual version of. XD
If you have any questions about any part of the process, please feel free to ask me! ❤️

The meeting
Tumblr media
"Back and forth like a tug of war,
What's it all for, do it want it...."
June 2016,
"What?" Gobsmacked. Absolutely Gobsmacked. "What... What do i do Pia?" Staring at a similar face to mine, our jaws seem to not want to return to their original place. What just happened, i hear you ask. Let me tell you.
What just happened was that Andrew G. Shawn Mendes the singer songwriter, who i some what dislike - not hate because hate is a strong word which totally is saved for people of pure evil, has emailed me asking if i could "meet up" with him tomorrow due to being the "perfect candidate" to put some of Shawn's rumours to an end.
"Kennedy East Everrett,
After looking over your social media and background, Island Records and Myself as Shawn Mendes' Manager strongly believe you are the perfect candidate to help Shawn regain his status. I must say we are quite impressed with you dedication and commitment you have shown through your early sporting career, which we understand you got an offer you had to knock back mid last year. Our deepest apologies.
What would be involved for yourself is that you will become Shawn's  significant other for a minimum period of 6 months. If rumours haven't come to a lull by then, you will be asked to stay longer.
In saying that, it will commence immediately meaning you will be flying out at the end of this month to follow Shawn on the rest of his World Tour. After his World Tour finishes you will be asked to stay in his home town Pickering, Canada for a couple of weeks.
After that you will be allowed to fly home for a maximum 8 weeks and depending on Shawn's plans, he will either fly to you and spend a few weeks there or you will fly back out to meet with Shawn.
If you wish to know more about this offer, I will be flying into Australia sometime tomorrow morning. Please come to the Pullman's at 11:00am and ask for room number 308 as this is where we will discuss the rest of your contract, in full.
Sincerely Yours,
Andrew G.
Island Records."
So this led to Pia and myself literally going through all the gossip magazines as well as online articles of all the dating rumours Shawn has tied to his name. It goes from girl to girl to his best friend to a guy back to a girl. My head is spinning just thinking of all of those names let alone being him who has to deal with all the questions thrown his way in every interview.
"How did they even find me?" I start to question, "How did they even find my social media?" Laughing a humourless laugh. Did they just track me down somehow? How though? I didn't even think that was possible let alone i'm a nobody in the social media world, like come on i have 0 followers on twitter which i signed up to a few months ago and only people i know on Facebook and Instagram - which is on private by the way.
I doubt they would have looked too much into my sporting career but they must have if they knew about the offer. Nobody knows about the offer. My head is spinning.
"What if it's not them though? What if this is some fake?"
"But I think i have to go P..." Coming to my realisation that i need to go to understand what will be happening and to ask the thousand questions swimming in my head. "I have to go..." Staring blankly as Pia slowly starts nodding in agreement.
-:-
To say i was nervous was a complete understatement. I had no idea what was going to happen and i still didn't know if i was going to accept it. If i did accept it what would happen to hockey? What situation will that put me in there, as nerve-wracking as it is i was still somewhat excited. Excited about the possibilities of travelling, seeing the world, venturing out of my comfort zone. And of course, having a "significant other".
I have always been so focused on my sport that i had zero time to date anyone, once i went one this date and it was the worst experience ever! We went to the movies and watched Pitched Perfect (yes, that is how long ago it was) and even though i had seen it 4 times before, he was completely involved in the movie which was great but did i mention i had to buy my own ticket? And drive myself there.
Once the movie finished i was so hungry i could've eaten my arm so i asked "Oh did you want to go get some food or something?" and of course he turned around and was like "Nah" and that was the conversation. Needless to say my mum was coming to pick us up and drop him off so i was left starving.
As we were waiting for my mum to come an older lady started talking to me which i was more than grateful for, i honestly think she could tell that's how bad it was.
So after that one date i promised myself never to let it happen again and here i am 4 years later getting handed a boy. Ha. Funny that but i wasn't going to make the mistake of falling for him even if i do take the offer.
I am doing it for me and he will probably kick me to the curb once i am no longer needed. I'll just play the part, it's just a job.
-:-
10:50am i walk into Pullman's, hands starting to sweat i wipe them on my jeans and pull my hair to one side hoping this was the right choice.
"Room 308 please." smiling at the receptionist hoping this won't take long,
"I'll need some ID first" Handing over my drivers license, she takes a quick few notes before handing it back directing me to elevator. "Level 3 room 8" she smiles before sending me off.
Maybe i should wait till right on 11 before knocking, will they appreciate me being early but what if they aren't ready yet or even worse, not even here.
Ding
The elevator breaks my train of thought as i walk out biting the bullet as only two minutes have past. Approaching the door, taking a deep breath before knocking.
The wait felt like forever, standing waiting for someone to answer when a really tall, muscly man answered the door.
"What are you doing here kid?" His voice was deep and i almost didn't catch what he said as it was almost mumbled.
"Uhh.. umm.. I'm here to see Andrew?" My voice barely came out as a whisper as i tried to quickly pull myself together.
"Ahhh, so you're the mystery girl here to help Shawn! Well then, right this way ma'm"
"My name is Kennedy, you don't have to call me ma'm" He stopped in his path and i had a mini heart-attack as he just looked at me. Did i say something wrong? What have i done, my life is going to end! Finally he smiled,
"I know who you are Kennedy, i was apart of the group that found you." Wrapping his arm around me as he guided me further into the room. Whispering as we turned the corner "Besides you already passed one test" as i was meet with what felt like a millions of eyes all on me.
I don't know what came over me, well actually i did. I froze. There were three security guards, including the one whose name i didn't get, plus another guy who i am assuming is Andrew.
"Kennedy. Hope Big Rob was welcoming" Ah, so that's what his name is. "Thank you for coming today, i'm Andrew, Shawn Mendes' manager." Shaking his hand with a polite smile "Please take a seat and we'll get started."

Do I need a motorcycle VIN number to get insurance in NC?
I live in North Carolina and I'm trying to get a license to purchase and operate a 150cc motorcycle. In North Carolina you must have a license for an automobile before you can get an endorsement for a motorcycle. Right now I'm learning how to drive a van so I can get a motorcycle endorsement. Before you can get a license for an automobile you must have proof of liability insurance (DMV form DL-123). Do I actually need a vehicle with a VIN number to get liability insurance? Or do I have to purchase non-owners insurance first and then switch it over to motorcycle insurance after I get an automobile license with motorcycle endorsement?
What should an 18-21 year old pay for motorcycle insurance? liability only?
if i were to get a motorcycle i would have to pay the insurance and i would like to know the cheapest but smartest way to do it.
""Alaska is the worst state for women, does anyone care what the worst state for men is?""
http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/is-alaska-the-worst-state-in-the-nation-for-women--202627073.html As for crime and imprisonment, the number of women going to prison in Alaska is growing: In 2007, women made up 6.5 percent of Alaskas prison population, but that number had jumped to nearly 11 percent in 2011. Alaskan women are slightly more likely to have health coverage than Alaskan men, but the coverage for Alaskan women is still below the national average, with 21 percent going without (compared to the national rate of 20). -So that means the male prison population in 2007 was at 94.5% and it went down to 89% in 2011. We can't have that! All we care about is the female prison population growing and how we have to stop it. We need more males in prison to get us back to 94.5 percent. And while more Alaskan women have health insurance than Alaskan men, they're just below the national average with 21% of women going without insurance. Who cares that more Alaskan women have health insurance than Alaskan men? We're only concerned about women here, and we have to lower the number of women who go without health insurance. forget about the men. And women in Alaska, make only 67 cents for every dollar a man makes. -Not too surprising since Alaska is mostly an industrial state with lots of mining, logging, fishing and other male dominated industrial jobs that women typically shy away from. As far as homelessness is concerned, only 25 percent of single people in shelters were female in 2012but, for adults in shelters considered part of a family, 62 percent were women with children. -Who cares that 75% of single people in shelter were men in 2012! The suicide rate among Alaskan women is rising. -I'm sure the suicide rate among Alaskan men is even higher, but again we don't care about the men. So why the raw deal for women in this state? It may have something to do with the ratio of men to women there, which was noted in the state report as being higher in Alaska than in any other state, with 108.5 males to every 100 females. Nationally, there are 96.7 men to every 100 women. -So because there are more men than women in Alaska, that's why women are suffering!?!""

The cost of a 125CC motorbike? Tests? Gear? Running costs?
Ok, so here it is. I know a bit about cars and I can drive one - I have a Peugeot 205. I know nothing about bikes! A freind of mine recently bought a 125CC Yamaha bike for 600 and did his CBT, his insurance is 200! So I was thinking about taking a 125CC bike crash course or getting a CBT certificate. Which is better to do? What costs are there involved? I was thinking about getting a twist and go bike (although I have had a go on a manual geared one and found it to be ok).""

Anybody know of any car insurance co's that will give auto insurance policies to 17 year olds??

Car Accident and Insurance?
On 7/24 I was at a Dairy Queen drive thru the person behind me hit the truck I was driving. I was looking at her in the rear view mirror the entire time. She had a cigarette hanging from her mouth that was unlit and she eventually backed up after hitting me. I got out of the truck and looked and I did not see any damage. She then said I didn't move you hit me I then told her No I did not hit you I am in front of you and this truck was never in reverse. Since there was no damage to the truck I did not bother getting any of her information since it was not my fault. On 7/27 I got a call from the police saying she told them I hit her. I gave them my side of the story and they said she had a witness who was a passenger in her car and they will be in touch. I also let them know I had a witness as well. The cop called me back yesterday and wanted to get my insurance information so her and I could exchange information. My question is do I have to give my insurance information to this cop? I did not hit this woman and I think she is trying to get one over on the insurance company. The cop said yesterday I'm surprised the truck does not have any damage because her car does have damage. This truck was a rental truck which was inspected at the time it was dropped back off at the rental company obviously there was no damage to it. This woman looked like she was on something to begin with and I'm guessing she was not paying attention probably looking for a lighter and let off the break and hit me. Which I still don't see how her car would be so damaged. I don't want this con artist having my information. So should I tell the cop I am not giving him my insurance information and tell her to take it to court? Should I get a lawyer? I'm not sure what to do I am 29 years old and I have never been in a accident so I am not sure how to go about this but I know this woman is trying to pull a fast one and I am not going to sit back and let it happen.

Everyone has heard the oft-repeated mantra of the left that “guns kill people.” Likewise, we’ve all heard the snarky responses that have been made to that, such as the ones about spoons making people fat and people having defective guns, because their guns have never killed anyone.
My personal collection of firearms falls into this category, as the only thing they’ve ever killed is a bulls-eye in a target. However, even though I’ve never fired a shot in anger, my guns have stopped two crimes, just because I showed that I was not an easy victim to take advantage of.
The reality is, killings happen and guns are often the tool that the killers use. There is no question that the modern gun is the most efficient weapon available to the average person, whether being used in the offense or the defense.
While our military forces have even more efficient weapons that pistols and rifles, these are denied to the public by their high price and laws restricting their ownership.
So, modern killers often use guns, simply because guns are efficient tools of war. But that doesn’t make guns killers. People are the killers and some percentage of our population has been killing their fellow man since Cain first realized that he could use a rock to bash in his brother Abel’s head (or however he did it). Cain didn’t have a Glock or an AR-15 to use; he probably didn’t even have a bow and arrow, so he used what he had at hand.
The problem isn’t the gun. As others have said before, guns are merely tools, no more able to commit crime than hammers are. And considering how many times I’ve hit my thumb with a hammer over the years, I’d say that hammers have a higher rate of hurting people than guns do.
But like the hammer, the gun can be used for good, just as it can be used for bad. As a weapon, it is as useful in the defense as it is in the offense. We can’t forget the neighbor who grabbed his personal AR-15 and ran to the aid of the people who were being killed in the Sutherland Springs shooting.
3 Second SEAL Test Will Tell You If You’ll Survive A SHTF Situation
Had it not been for some judicious marksmanship on the part of that hero, many more people might have been killed. The church was apparently only the killer’s first intended target, as proven by the huge quantity of ammunition he was carrying.
Every day, criminals are thwarted by good guys carrying guns. Some of those good guys also have a badge, but many more do not.
It has been proven that most gun-related crimes involve the use of guns that are purchased illegally; either on the black market or through what are known as “straw purchases.” While this doesn’t cover all murders, simply enforcing the existing laws on the books would greatly reduce gun-related crime.
That’s not to say that it would reduce crime though. Criminals are criminals and if they don’t have guns to use, they will use whatever weapon they can find. Criminals didn’t suddenly appear when guns were invented; they practiced their “profession” long before that time.
Guns just became their weapon of choice for the same reason they did for hunters; they’re easier to use.
Mass Murder and Weapons
The very same day that the Sandy Hook shooting happened (in 2014), a knife-wielding thug entered a school in China, killing more children than Adam Lanza did. But this wasn’t the worst knife attack in China that year, on March 1, 2014, 10 men, armed with knives, entered the Kumming train station, killing 29 and wounding 130 others.
Mass murder is mass murder, regardless of the weapon used. It is a horrendous event, regardless of who does it, where they do it, who the victims are or what weapon they hold in their hand. Yet it is guns that receive all the press, not because they are more deadly, but for political reasons.
Anything can be used to kill others, especially in the hands of a skilled individual. Martial arts weapons started out as tools, not weapons. They became weaponized in China, because the Japanese didn’t allow the Chinese to own swords. So they figured out how to use what they had.
This isn’t the only historic reference we can make to the use of tools as weapons. Many of the melee weapons used in the Middle Ages were tools as well, especially the “battle axe” and the “war hammer.”
While there were versions of these tools which were crafted specifically to be used as weapons, the majority of the peasantry merely used what tools they had at hand. Both axes and large hammers make effective weapons, if you don’t have anything better to use.
Hands and Knives
The same is true of murderers. Some of the most infamous serial murderers in history didn’t use guns. Jack the Ripper, for example, used knives on his victims; cutting their throats and then mutilating their bodies.
Since the killer, who is believed to be a man, had a distinct physical advantage over his female victims, so a knife was clearly sufficient for his needs.
The Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway didn’t even need a knife in his own version of Jack the Ripper’s murder spree, he strangled them to death. Early on in his killing career he did this with his hands, but as he became more proficient, he used a ligature (a cord of some sort, used as a garrote).
Still the most prolific serial murderer in American history, Ridgway has been convicted of murdering 48 separate women, and the actual count is suspected as being over 90. His killings resemble those of Jack the Ripper in that most of his victims were sex workers and runaway teenagers, who he committed sexual acts with both before and after murdering them.
Medicines
Perhaps one of the most bizarre serial murder cases is that of Niels Hoegal, a German male nurse. While actively working in a hospital, fighting to save his patients’ lives, Hoegal was also killing them, and apparently doing so for the thrill of it. The thrill wasn’t of killing them, but of rescuing them from death; a death that he himself inflicted.
Hoegal’s weapon of choice was a heart medication called Gilurytmal. He would give patients an overdose of this medication, so that he could impress his colleagues by resuscitating them. But he was not successful in all cases, many died.
Apparently that was of no concern of his, even though he fought to save patients lives daily.
While this killer was only convicted of two murders, two attempted murders and one count of serious bodily harm, it is believed that he killed over 100 people over a six year period of time. The only reason why there are so few convictions is that most of his victims were cremated, making it impossible for forensic investigators to prove whether he killed them or not.
Cars, Trucks and Explosives
To those who think in terms of weapons, anything can be a weapon, even things that are not designed for the purpose of killing. Cars and trucks were designed for transport, yet many die from vehicle accidents. In 2016 (the last year for which complete data is available at this time) there were over 40,000 people who died in vehicular accidents.
When you take into consideration the percentage of these which were caused by drugs or alcohol, it is impossible to state those were merely “accidents.”
But vehicles can be used intentionally as weapons as well. Car bombings are not uncommon, especially in the Middle East, where terrorists have turned the car bomb into a fine art. Cars and trucks make it easy to transport the explosives, as well as providing extra shrapnel when the bomb goes off.
But vehicles can be used as weapons, even without the explosives. On December, 19, 2016 a terrorist drove a truck into a Christmas Market in Berlin. This act claimed 12 lives, including that of the driver the truck was stolen from, as well as an additional 56 others who were injured.
This violent act was clearly intended to be an act of war, motivated by ISIS and perpetrated by a failed Tunasian asylum seeker.
Another such example is Nice, France when in 2016 a cargo truck was driven in a crowd of people resulting in 86 people dead and 458 injured.
While serial killers who operate over years can claim high numbers of victims, perhaps the worst mass murders are committed not by firearms, but by explosives. This only makes sense, as explosives give the killer more bang for the buck.
They can kill more people in a single “shot” than would be even remotely possible with a firearm. This makes the actual number of victims dependent largely on the occupancy of the building at the time the bomb goes off.
The Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995 killed 168 people and injured more than 680 others. While the destructive force of the bomb was aimed at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, a total of 324 other buildings, within a 16 block radius were damaged, some to the point of destruction.
One would think that such a massive explosion would require special methods and materials, and in fact, some special materials were used. But the vast majority of the explosive force came from common materials which are readily available, using formulas which have been readily available in open-source material since long before the internet made it possible to find them in seconds.
The Bath School Massacre
Then there was the Bath School Massacre of 1927, long before mass murderers became media celebrities. At that time, it was apparently possible to buy dynamite over the counter, without the restrictions that are in place today.
The killer, Andrew Kehoe, bought these in small increments, in various locations, over several months, eliminating any suspicion that he was buying them for nefarious purposes.
Those explosives were used to create four separate explosions, one of which did not detonate. The first was at his farm, using firebombs to destroy the house and outbuildings before attacking the school. But even before that, he started his killing spree, murdering his own wife a couple of days before setting off the explosion.
The planning of the operation, purchasing the explosive and planting them in the school took months. As a member of the school board, he had ready access to the school, allowing him to carry the explosives into the basement and prepare his bomb there.
The explosion of the bomb under the north wing of the school killed 30 people, mostly children, and injuring another 58, some of whom were maimed for life.
A second explosion was triggered by the killer a short time later, exploding his truck, which he had filled with explosives and shrapnel. Kehoe, the school superintendent and a few others were killed in this explosion.
The only reason more people were not, was because there were few people near the truck at the time.
A third bomb, consisting of 500 pounds of explosive, had been prepared in the south wing basement, which for some reason failed to detonate. Had it exploded, the casualty count would have been much higher and the building would have been completely destroyed.
Conclusion
It is clear from these examples that murderers, even the mass murderers of today, don’t need guns to accomplish their purpose. When people set out to kill others, they will find a way, no matter what. Making gun ownership illegal would do nothing more than make it harder for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves from these criminals.
Even within the realm of gun-related deaths, the statistics aren’t as clear as the gun control crowd would like to make it seem. The New York Times, arguably the most liberal newspaper in the country, reported that “more than 60 percent of Americans who die from guns die by suicide; but that fact is often overlooked” in their October 8, 2015 issue. If they are able to recognize this fact, why can’t others?
Again, eliminating gun ownership won’t stop suicide. There are more suicides committed by drug overdose every year, than there are involving firearms. That’s a rather amazing statistic, when you consider that 80% of suicide attempts involving a firearm are successful, while only 3% of suicide attempts involving drugs are.
So the actual number of attempted suicides by drugs is astronomical.
Do guns make it easier for people to commit suicide? Yes, they do. But again, the problem isn’t the guns, it’s the mental health of the people who commit the suicide. If access to guns was blocked, the only ones who that would stop are the impulsive suicides.
Maybe that’s a worthwhile goal, but it’s not worth taking away everyone’s Second Amendment rights to accomplish it.
Once again, if someone really wanted to commit suicide using a firearm, they could find one, even if guns were illegal. Criminals can buy guns in any country in the world, even those with the most restrictive firearm laws. If they can’t, it doesn’t take a whole lot of skill to craft a homemade single-shot gun that shoots shotgun shells. So criminals would have guns, but law-abiding citizens wouldn’t.
What the left really wants is one of two things, neither of which is beneficial to society and severely restricts our freedom. The first is to eliminate the physical laws which allow firearms to operate. That way, there would be no more guns.
Those who wish for this are the ones who don’t want firearms around, because they are afraid of them. It is a fear-driven argument, which has no basis in logic. I know people like this and they can’t articulate their reasons beyond, “I don’t like guns.”
But it is the other group that is ultimately the more dangerous. They want to concentrate all guns in the hands of the government. This has happened in various places and various times through the history of guns.
Each and every time it has led to a totalitarian government, where the common people didn’t have any rights at all.
These people are the politicians, bureaucrats and their lackeys. They want control and they want to take our freedom away from us. That’s what makes them dangerous and that’s what the Founding Fathers gave us our Second Amendment rights to protect ourselves against.

Just how does the statute of limitations work?
By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
On the momentous occasion of the demolition of the American-Drew silo several of years ago, I could not help but do a bit of reminiscing about the days when it was a bustling manufacturing center.
As a kid I walked through that entire complex of buildings on a regular basis selling newspapers for The Wilkes Record and the Journal-Patriot.
Also, every Friday I went back to the American-Drew offices on D Street to see Blair Gwyn.  Blair was one of my customers on my Greensboro Daily News morning route and on Friday afternoons, I did some of my weekly collection.  Blair Gwyn was the last of my morning route customers and I had the good fortune of seeing him on a somewhat regular basis as long as he lived. Blair was a gentleman when I met him and was a gentleman and a wonderful man until his death in 2014 at 102 — and was always far sharper than most folks half his age.
But for today, my memories are much closer. About 10 years ago, The Record began sponsoring a professional rodeo.  One of the things we were to provide for the rodeo company was a forklift.  When I was talking to Roger Harris about this, he said it needed to be a large enough lift to pick up stacks of fences and gates they used for the rodeo.
“No problem,” I said in my best Archie Nichols imitation, and promptly called Archie to find out where to borrow one.  Archie recommended I call the American-Drew, since they were just a block or two away from the Rotary Park where the rodeo is held.  They were agreeable, but said I would need to pick it up on the appointed day, and do the driving myself.
Well, when that day came, my wife, Laura, and I drove to the Wilkesboro Avenue entrance of the plant  and went to the lumber office.  Understand, I had never driven a forklift of any kind in my life, and still thought about them as essentially large toys named Hyster.
When they showed me the lift I was borrowing, my heart went down into my shoes.  The tires on that thing were almost as tall as me.  It could pick up a small dump truck like it was a lunchbox, and I had to drive it?  I didn’t think so.
After being assured it was a piece of cake to drive, and a brief tutorial, we set about moving this Gulliver size lift to the Rotary Park.  I was as nervous as a sore tailed cat in a room full of rockers as I began, but after a couple of trips around the lumber yard, I did feel a bit more comfortable and began the trip.  Traffic was very light, thank goodness, so the stress level was eased a bit more.   About the time I got to the loop, I heard glass breaking over my head.  I ducked instinctively, but was quickly thankful for the huge enclosed cab on the lift.  I assumed someone had left a soda bottle on the machine and it had fallen.
As a safety measure, I had Laura follow in her car.  She kept blowing the horn and blinking her lights but I was busy driving the lift, the motor was very loud, and I couldn’t pay her much attention.
Laura is bad to get excited about nothing, anyway, and I thought I was doing a pretty good job, all things considered.
Then I heard a bunch more breaking glass, and then again even more, and actually wondered out loud what idiot had put all those pop bottles on the top of that forklift. When I got to the stop light at the D Street intersection where P C Source is located, Laura pulled up close behind me and began yelling, in addition to the horn and the lights.
At long last, I understood what she was blowing the horn and blinking lights about — those huge standards on the lift where the forks go up and down had been busting the bottom of every traffic light I came to.
It wasn’t pop bottles after all.
Well, once again, I was reminded that I was about the worst driver in the world — and, as I gingerly drove that huge machine down D Street toward the rodeo, I could once again hear my dad’s voice, as he so patiently tried to teach me to drive, saying, “Your other left son, your other left.”
Amazing Grace
By LAURA WELBORN
"Amazing Grace” is a Christian hymn published in 1779, with words written by the English poet and Anglican clergyman John Newton (1725–1807).
Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed (conscripted) into service in the Royal Navy, and after leaving the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland, so severely that he called out to God for mercy, a moment that marked his spiritual conversion. He continued his slave trading career until 1754, when he ended his seafaring altogether and began studying Christian theology.
Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)    That sav'd a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found,    Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,    And grace my fears reliev'd; How precious did that grace appear    The hour I first believ'd!
While I love the song Amazing Grace I did not know the story behind it, but hearing the story during a sermon by Carl Elledge made me think about it from a new perspective.  Carl talked about how some people have an easier road and some live from crisis to crisis  Life is either so easy that we do not seek help much less self-examine or life is so bad we cannot make sense of the bad and do not seek help.  Yet we live in the context of Grace and it is right there for the asking- but usually not in the way we would envision.
And how often have we walked in the shoes of those we condemn?  Who of us has never needed help?  It is in those moments when we are the most desperate that we reach out- when we can no longer help ourselves.  My takeaway was how to extend grace to others as we have been forgiven by others for it is through our hardest times that we grow the most.
My niece recently contacted me as she was heartbroken she did not get into the Peace Corps and was graduating from College without the plan she had her heart set on.  I responded that I have had the door slam in my rear many times and have experienced how many times doors have opened that I had not planned on much less hoped for.  But each door has lead me to another avenue of redemption and skill level.  It is my hope as I grow older and stack up my losses and crisis’s I have gained the insight to understand the shoes someone else has walked in and maybe be able to help them in their journey to the life of slammed doors and beaconing doors.
Five years ago, I began having all kinds of strange things happen to my body- I was walking into things, having a terrible time with memory issues, having trouble hearing and my thyroid levels began going up and down in an unexplained way.  Besides feeling like I was going crazy I began to work hard at recovery- I wrote everything down each day in a journal, I focused hard on listening and picking up cues for what people were saying, everything became intentional.  Years later I finally had a diagnosis (after I failed the memory clinic test) Viral Encephalitis.  I was told the good news was I would recover 100 percent.  While I had lost my job, my children had all moved away, I struggled to hear conversations I had a whole new understanding of how others struggle through health issues that I had taken for granted.  I hope I can give back and maybe give a small part back to others to intentionally reach out and lend a “hand”, encouragement and understanding that we all live by Grace.

Radical Islamic immigration strategy
By EARL COX
Special to The Record
As immigration protests surge at airports and cities across the United States and in other places around the world, President Donald Trump continues to stand by his Jan. 27 executive order, with some adjustments, restricting immigration and his pledge to safeguard the citizens of the United States. Acknowledging America as a nation of immigrants, he vowed “compassion to those fleeing oppression…while protecting our own citizens and borders.” The importance of protecting borders from illegal entry is something Israel has known for a very long time yet she is unjustly criticized by the international community for protecting her citizenry from those whose objective is to perpetrate acts of terror.
Trump’s order temporarily suspends immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries that sponsor terrorism and provides improved vetting of radical Islamic terrorists. With certain exceptions such as those with work permits, refugee entry into the U.S. has been largely curtailed for Syrian refugees and those traveling from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Unlawful entry is a detriment to the national security of democratic countries. It opens the door to terrorist infiltration and, in the case of Israel, would have a major negative impact on the demographic balance of the Jewish state.
Nevertheless, Trump’s immigration policy stirred up a hornet’s nest around the world. In the United States, lawsuits challenging the order say it is discriminatory and violates constitutional rights. But case law overall indicates that noncitizens do not enjoy such rights. In all the brouhaha, a crucial and determining factor for keeping America and other Western democracies safe is being overlooked by the media and is missing from public discourse. Islam’s own immigration strategy is not part of this discourse but it should be.
In the Muslim Brotherhood’s 1991 “General Strategic Goal for the Brotherhood in North America,” purposeful Muslim immigration is Stage One of radical Islam’s battle against the West and Western values.  The 1987 Muslim Brotherhood Project presents Islam as a “civilization alternative” supporting a “global Islamic State” through jihad ...“to eliminate and destroy Western civilization from within, and to sabotage its miserable house…so it is eliminated…so that Islam is victorious over all other religions.”  Islam is on a global caliphate mission with a country-by-country political strategy of subjugation in four stages beginning with immigration (“settlement”) and population expansion. The second stage is “consolidation of power”—via demands for deferential treatment, religious accommodation, judicial, cultural and educational non-integration, and covert efforts to destroy the host society from within. This is achieved by undermining the power base of non-Muslims and their religions, especially Jews and Christians. The third stage is “Open War.” The fourth is transformation of the host state to an Islamic theocracy under sharia law, which denies and destroys non-Muslims’ rights, freedoms, religions, culture, worship and populations. Most global jihadist organizations embrace this theology, including Hamas, Hezbollah and Palestinian militants who threaten Israel from the southwest, north and from its own heartland, squeezing her forcibly from three sides.
The only two countries that acknowledge radical Islam’s goal of a worldwide caliphate are Israel and the United States, though political correctness misleads some. Israel is a Jewish state and the United  States historically was founded on Judeo-Christian values. In democracies, immigrants are free to live and worship as they choose, but not to unravel the fabric of the society, culture and country that has welcomed them. Democracy’s "melting pot" doesn’t mix with radical Islam, because Islam and freedom cannot coexist.
 Well Done Ladies
By Carl White
In the many things that I am fortunate enough to do, speaking and sharing the power of good stories is among my favorite activities.
Maybe one reason is because I am sharing real experiences. Be it about travels, food, history, mystery, current affairs or an ever so popular ghost story, we do them all.
Some things are easily verifiable and others may be marked down as folk lore and that okay too, when identified as such.
Stories of travel are always good because they represent adventure and the opportunity for people to follow along and make the journey there own.
I am often asked for recommendations for must visit places. My recommendations always come with a story of experience. I think context is important.
I am fortunate in that my speaking schedule is for the most part booked many months in advance. Not so long ago I spoke for the River Hills Women’s Club in Lake Wylie, S.C.
Speaking for groups who make a difference in society is always enjoyable.
Women’s Clubs are great because they do things that have a positive impact on our Communities, States and Nation. Often times Women’s Clubs focus on the community in which most of their members live.
Such in the case with the River Hills Women’s Club. There members must live in the River Hills community or be a member of the River Hills Country Club. The club offers a variety of opportunities for membership involvement with the common thread of fellowship and service.
On the day, I spoke for the group the table center pieces were beautifully decorated birdhouses in honor of the arrival of spring time. They were provided by the group’s garden club and a lucky person at each table walked away with a birdhouse. I thought that was nice.
The meeting was opened by the Club President, Beverly Kelly. A few general announcements were made and then we all stood for the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, followed by a blessing for our meal which was then promptly served.
I enjoyed a tasty Cobb Salad with pleasant conversation at table #2.  I was seated with President Kelly, Judi Nelson who arranged the speaking engagement and others.
Judi introduced me as the speaker and for the next 40 minutes I shared stories about interesting people and places in the Carolinas. I spoke of Blackbeard, Tom Dooley and a notorious moonshiner. I shared stories about great Inns, wonderful food and traditions that attract people of the world to the Carolinas.
The laughter, applause and kindness was much appreciated however, I think that I was the one who gained the most. As I shared my stories in a room with no empty seats and as I looked upon a focused audience I realized that I was standing before a group of people who care deeply for each other and for causes that extend far beyond the boundaries of the community in which they live.
I was reminded that the good in our society far outweighs the bad. We must never forget that for every challenge there is someone or a group of people who care enough to tackle and lessen the burdens of a complex reality.
If we were to look at the positive effect of Women’s Clubs across the country we would see the influence they have on our families, communities, education, public issues, the arts and the general wellbeing of all. We should all stand and honor these brave women with an applause that if possible could be heard around the world.
To the Women’s Clubs in the Carolinas and across America I extend my most heartfelt gratitude.
Thanks for lunch Ladies and keep up the great work.
