- ah yes your cheeky and "friendly" bat who loves to scare you on purpose by either appearing hanging upside down on the most random times to startle you. I mean you can't really blame him can you? It's fun plus seeing your reaction makes it even merrier for him! But he can be a serious bat sometimes, which is shocking to say atleast. He once poured a whole bag of salt inside the soup you were cooking,tarnishing the taste completely. You swear he was grinning when he saw you taste the soup and scrunch up your face in disgust. To him it was the best soup ever! He is the best cook ever known to batkind! Or faekind.

TREY CLOVER . . . as a hamster

- your extremely helpful and laid back hamster who always is there for you whenever you need something, TREY is like jamil in way , always calm and reserved , he also has a strange fixation on making you take care of his dental hygiene at all times and always forces you to take care of yours too! he also always watches you bake and hands you ingredients he thinks the recipe needs to elevate it more , and it really does help.

- when you first adopted him alongside with Floyd , he put up a fake persona where he was just a kind and soft eel unlike Floyd who was causing chaos everywhere , and then later you started to find out that he's actually a pretty devious eel , just like his twin brother. whenever you held him he had a tight grip on you , if you tried to pull him out of your hold he would bite lightly , enough for some crimson drops of arterial blood to come out when all Floyd did was just squeeze your hand. But both of them could be helpful and smart at times surprisingly, scaring off any people they find suspicious or people you hate.

Chapter 5. A Game of Love for Freedom

You were sitting in the back of a taxi, staring at the dark screen of your phone. The windows of the car were slightly fogged up, and you could only see blurry jumbles of the city's buildings, changing one after another. 

The taxi driver was driving silently, and the radio was playing some calm instrumental music. But there was no calm music inside you - only the hum of anger and frustration. You barely managed to slip out of the office before someone saw you. The journalists. They were already waiting at the entrance, armed with cameras and questions you didn't want to answer.

It was all inevitable. The news of Jungkook's new "girlfriend" was spreading at an incredible rate. Almost all the tabloids were not too lazy to write about you, and it was better not to read the comments on the articles at all. From now on, you are no longer just an employee of ‘EON Creative’. You are "his lover".

Your life no longer belonged to you.

You bit your lips nervously.

It was because of him that it all started. He was the reason you lost your job. Because of him, you had become a sensation to be savored on the Internet.

Your fingers gripped the phone tighter as you typed a short message

📱 You: "Where are you?" 

And pressed "send". 

The answer came much faster than you expected. The phone vibrated literally a minute later. He answered: 

📲 Jungkook: "Who’s that remembered my phone number?" 

You felt everything shrinking in your middle. You hit the screen with your fingers. 

📱 You: "Where are you?" 

You ignored his words and repeated your message. You looked expectantly at the three animated dots that indicated that he was typing a message. 

📲 Jungkook: "Oh, so you already looking for me now?"

After a second pause, another message came:

📲 Jungkook: "I thought you already deleted my number. What? You missed me? 😏" 

📱 You: "We need to meet! Immediately!"

📲 Jungkook: "Immediately? What a tone... Are you always this demanding or is it just for me?"

You were already angry, but Jungkook seemed to be your curse, making you become absolutely evil. 

📱 You: "Jungkook, I'm not in the mood for your jokes."

📲 Jungkook: "And I'm not in the mood for your orders."

You hit the phone's touchscreen even harder. You started shaking with anger. 

📱 You: "Just fucking tell me where you are!" 

Jungkook was silent. You stared at his last text message, waiting for a response. He's just playing with fire. 

📲 Jungkook: "It depends on what you need me for. If you need to cry, I'm busy. If you want something interesting... maybe I can find a minute 😉"

You roll your eyes, trying not to throw your phone out the window.

📱 You: "Jeon, did you even see what happened? 

📲 Jungkook: "What happened kitten?"

📱 You: "Are you being on the internet? All of Korea knows, and you seem to be the last who’s knows that I'm your lover!" 

Jungkook didn't answer for a minute. He kept you waiting. You could not stand it and wrote your question again. 

📱 You: "We need to talk about it!" 

Jungkook didn't answer. You locked your phone and almost cursed out loud. You sighed heavily, feeling tired of everything that was happening. 

Your phone vibrated and you quickly opened a chat with Jungkook. 

📲 Jungkook: "I can only be free after 6 p.m. So if you want to come over in the evening, let's talk." 

You looked at his text message and were unhappy. Did you really need wait all day?

📱 You: "Hey, are you serious, this is important! I can't wait until the evening!"

📲 Jungkook: "And I can't change my schedule because of your tantrums."

You clutched the phone in your hand, trying not to explode. He really got you.

📱 You: "Tantrums? Are you kidding me? Because of you, I got fired, my phone is blowing up with calls, idiots from the press tracked me down under the company, and you're just going on with your life as if nothing happened?!" 

📲 Jungkook: "I can't write anymore. Let's talk in the evening. I'll write when I'm free." 

Jungkook left the chat and you wanted to tear yourself apart. You were so annoyed and angry. You locked your phone and closed your eyes to hold back the tears that threatened to spill over. You didn't understand why you deserved to be put through such a trial. Where on earth did Jungkook come from? Why did you ask him to pretend to be your boyfriend? But now nothing could be changed, only the problem had to be solved, and you were going to give the culprit of this situation do it. 

You got out of the car, paid the taxi driver, and quickly went up to your apartment. As you exited the elevator, you noticed the package with the dress you had left under Jungkook's door. It stood untouched and you involuntarily felt nausea. Because this dress was a vivid reminder of your mistake. You looked away and walked past, simultaneously thinking that Jungkook was either not home all this time as you had thought or he had simply ignored your return and left this package just standing there.

You entered into your apartment. There was silence outside the door, but even that didn't bring you peace. You took off your jacket, threw your phone on the couch, and went into the bathroom. You washed your hands and looked in the mirror. You looked... depressed. Your eyes were a little red from tension, your lips were pressed into a thin line. You'll have to wait for Jungkook all day. Maybe it's for the best. Your anger will calm down and you'll be able to tell him normally, without yelling, that he's to blame for this whole situation and he personally has to solve it in a matter of days! 

You did not know what to do. You were in such a state that you wanted to cry and drink until you passed out. But you didn't want to drink alone, and Jisu wouldn't be free until 7:00 p.m., so that wasn't an option either. She was working right now and your chest was tight with the thought of work. 

So when you left the bathroom, you sat down on the couch and focused on your phone. You wanted to order some food. Yes, delicious food will help to quench your irritation and raise your mood, which was lower than the level of the Mariana Trench. 

You wanted to open the food delivery app, but instead your fingers clicked the browser icon and you saw a bunch of articles similar to the one you read in the morning. The photo was the same, but the headlines were different: 

"Who is the mysterious girl who enchanted the heir to the ‘Jeon Group’?"

"A romantic night at a corporate party: Jong Jungkook and his new passion?"

"Their looks speak for themselves! A secret romance within the walls of ‘EON Creative?’"

And even worse were the comments that you knew you shouldn't read, but you were curious.

"Of course, another one who wants to make it to the elite."

"Is she even pretty? You can't see her face."

"Ha, she's just using him! Poor Jungkook, I hope he doesn't waste money on her."

"Why do all the girls who get spotted with him think they're special?"

"Well, if Jungkook likes girls like that, I have bad news about his taste."

"Of course, another one who sleeps with the bosses."

The last comment made you throw your phone on the couch and run your hands over your face tiredly.

It was so unfair.

You were made out to be someone you weren't. Everyone around you was just talking about you, as if you were no longer a person, but just an object for gossip.

You got up and went to the bathroom. You turned on the water and listened to the sound of it, and it calmed you down a bit. You undressed and when the bathtub was sufficiently filled with water, you got in and tried to relax. 

The hot water enveloped your body, and for a few seconds you allowed yourself to close your eyes. The heaviness in your chest eased a little, but the words you read still echoed in your head. "Another one who sleeps with the bosses." That was the most offensive thing. The most painful.

You had never looked for easy ways, never sucked up to your bosses to get promoted. You worked your ass off, even doing extra tasks to maintain a good reputation. And now it's all ruined. Because of one man.

Your lips pressed together, and you took a deep breath. 

Giving yourself an hour to calm your nerves, you stepped out of the bathroom, wrapping yourself in a towel. You heard the sound of the message. Your heart skipped a beat - Jungkook? Had he gotten off work early?

You walked over to the couch and picked up the phone. The message was from Jisoo.

📲 Jisu: "How are you? I saw the articles. It's just horrible. Has Jungkook done anything yet?"

You bit your lower lip as you typed your answer:

📱 You: "No. But we have to meet up. What about you? How are things at work?"

📲 Jisu: "Like a tinderbox. Everyone is talking about you and Jungkook. The boss is angry, but it's more because of the press attention. He says it's bad for the company's reputation."

📱 You: "So it's nothing new... 😑"

📲 Jisu: "Yeah... But I'm here for you and if you want to talk, I'm ready."

📱 You: "Thank you dear, we will definitely talk about it..." 

You exhaled and put the phone down on your lap. It was a little easier to know that Jisu was supporting you, but it didn't change the situation. You were still the center of the scandal. 

Throwing the towel on the back of the couch, you went to the closet and dressed in a white short top and black sweatpants. You tied your hair in a careless bun to keep it out of your eyes. Your nerves were on edge, so you ordered some food: spicy fried chicken and beer. 

In the late in evening, it started to rain outside. It was pounding on the window sill, making a lot of noise. You looked at the clock on your phone. It showed 7.28 p.m. It was as if Jungkook was playing on your nerves on purpose. He said he'd be free after 6:00 p.m., but it was already half past eight and you hadn't heard from him. 

You had been lying on the bed for several hours, but you were boring. You got up and stretched your muscles when you heard your phone vibrate. The screen showed an incoming call from Jungkook. For some reason, your heart started beating faster. You grabbed the phone and put on the green button. 

"Hello." Your voice was reserved. 

"I'm under the house, come down to my car.  I only have ten minutes." 

You raised your eyebrows. 

"Really? You kept me waiting all day and now you only have ten minutes?"

"If there's something you don't like, we can talk another time." he said nonchalantly. 

You rolled your eyes and exhaled in frustration. You are a ball of nerves today. 

"Why can't you lift up?" you asked as you walked to the front door to go downstairs to see him. 

"I have to leave immediately after this, and I don’t want to waste time. So if you want to talk, lift your sweet ass and come down to me…" You could feel that he was saying it with a smile.

"Okay." you growled and hung up the phone. You put on your sweatshirt, pulled the hood over your head and left the apartment. 

It was wet outside and the rain was pounding down on Seoul at night. You saw Jungkook's black Maybach GLS. It was parked right in front of your door. You quickly got into the front seat, but the rain still managed to get you a little wet. 

Jungkook gave you a quick glance and then focused on the road ahead. He pulled out of the driveway to go to a place where his car wouldn't be in the way. 

"Did you get wet?" his voice was relaxed, even if you could tell he sounded tired. It was the first time in your life you'd ever seen him sound so preoccupied. 

"Of course!" you pulled off your hood and ran your fingers through your hair, trying to look normal. "Not everyone has a security guard running around with an umbrella whenever they need to." 

"I don't have security either. And you could have brought an umbrella with you." He gave you a quick glance. 

"You made me run up here instead of going upstairs like a normal person!" you protested. 

Jungkook didn't answer, but the corners of his lips twitched. Obviously, he found your indignation amusing. Jungkook stopped the car in an open parking lot on the street and when he finished parking, he turned to you, still smiling slightly. He looked calm, even a little relaxed. His hair was perfectly styled with a parting in the middle. His black shirt, unbuttoned at the top buttons, and dark jacket made him even more... dangerously attractive.

You looked at him that to you could to show him your anger, and you felt your stomach lurch. Did you just feel fucking butterflies in your stomach just because of the way he looked? 

"So, what are we going to talk about?" asked Jungkook, making his smile wider.

"Settle this 'mistress' nonsense and give me my job back!" You immediately blurted out all your demands to him. Jungkook's eyebrows flew up. He chuckled in surprise, clearly impressed by the way you spoke. 

"I don't understand. Are you asking me for help again? As I recall, you said you would 'never' ask for it again." Jungkook leaned back, staring at you greedily. How the fuck can you look so sexy wearing a regular top and sweatpants? Jungkook lowered his gaze to your figure. Your cardigan was unbuttoned, and you were wearing a white top with no bra underneath. He could clearly see your nipples through the fabric. He couldn't help but think back to the night he fucked you so well. His thoughts were already going the wrong way. He looked down at your sweatpants and thought about how easy it would be to get his hands underneath them to touch your pussy. 

"This is not a request for help, a genius. You are to blame for this whole situation and you are the only one who can solve it!" You said angrily, snapping Jungkook out of his thoughts. He raised his eyes to your face. For a few seconds, he looked into your eyes full of anger and then leaned over, leaning on the armrest. You instinctively leaned back, but not too far. 

"You asked me to play the role of your boyfriend. Why are you making me the only one to blame?" Jungkook asked seriously, but not without a hint of playfulness in his voice. Your eyes darted between his. 

"That's what I asked. But I didn't know you were the goddamn heir to the ‘Jeon Group’! Why didn't you tell me in the first place?" you asked. Jungkook pressed his lips together and you looked at them against your will. He noticed this and deliberately ran his tongue over his lips. 

"Did you ask?" asked Jungkook, watching you stare at his lips in awe. You forced yourself to look away when you heard what he was saying. You opened your mouth at his absurd question. And then you gave a hysterical short laugh. 

"So I'm supposed to come to you and ask you to play the role of my boyfriend and then give you a questionnaire so you can fill in your entire biography?" your voice trembled with anger. 

Jungkook smiled slyly, tilting his head slightly to the side.

"That's right, kitten. It would be interesting," he replied, looking you over calmly. "Although it would hardly change anything, would it?" he stared at you again, as if enjoying his every word. 

You took a deep breath, trying to control the wave of irritation.

"It would have changed everything! I would never have asked you to be my boyfriend!" 

"Then you would have missed out on a great opportunity to spend the night with me." Jungkook said, remembering how you paid for his service. His voice sounded mocking, but his eyes flashed with something deeper.

"Speaking of the night... are you okay with cheating on your fiancée?" you asked with curiosity in your voice. The fact that you were sleeping with them while he had a fiancée triggered you just as much. Jungkook tensed up. His smile remained in place, but his eyes darkened. He leaned back slowly, watching you as if assessing you. 

"Me?" he raised his eyebrows in surprise, jabbing a finger at his chest, "Cheating?" he tilted his head, and his voice was still lightly playful, mixed with challenge.

"Well, your fiancée is Kang Sukhi, who everyone knows about, except me of course, because I didn't know you at all. Is that okay?" 

"I didn't cheat on anyone, kitten. You're confused..." Jungkook was still smiling and you could tell he was having fun with the whole situation, but you weren't in the mood for amusement. 

"You're officially engaged, but you're still fucking me!" you almost shouted as you leaned forward. Jungkook was amazed at your angry reaction to Suhy, didn't it look like jealousy? In his eyes, it was more than that. He straightened up, looking you straight in the eye. 

"No. We're not officially engaged. If it's so important for you to know, I haven't promised her anything. For me, she is nothing more than a convenient formality for the family business. And if you think that I ever belonged to her..." his fingers lightly touched a strand of your hair, making your skin tingle. "...you'd be very wrong."

You pressed your lips together, trying not to show how something stirred inside you. You batted his hand away and turned away, crossing your arms over your chest. 

"It doesn't change the fact that I slept with you without knowing the truth." 

"And do you regret it?"

The question hovered between you, making you hold your breath.

"Yes." You lied, answering too quickly. 

Jungkook leaned forward a little, watching you.

"You're lying."

His confidence pissed you off.

"Enough! I don't want to continue this topic..." 

"You started talking about it ," Jungkook said, laughing. You looked at him angrily and he just shook his head. 

"You're nothing but trouble for me! And it's been like that since we first met. I don't want anything to tie us together! So do everything the way it was before you! Say that I'm not your mistress and that you have a beautiful fiancée whom you love very much. And make my boss take me back to work!" you demanded. Jungkook just smiled. He could barely stop himself from throwing kisses at you. Your anger turned him on and lit a dangerous fire inside him. 

"What are you going to give me in return?" He asked as soon as you finished speaking. You stared at him, not understanding what he was asking. 

"What?" you asked nervously. 

"Well, you don't think I'm just going to decide this, do you?" he lazily ran his fingers over the steering wheel.

You felt like you were on the verge of exploding. 

"Are you really that pathetic that you want to make me pay for your own mistake?" you asked sarcastically. 

"Mistake?" Jungkook smiled, but his eyes instantly darkened. "I wonder what exactly I did wrong? I went along with your adventure and saved you from the boss." 

"You should have told me who you were..." 

Jungkook exhaled, you kept saying the same thing and he was getting a little tired of fighting with you. 

"Okay, how do you see the solution to this problem?" Jungkook suddenly asked.

"I told you. Just make an official statement that there is nothing between us. And... and tell Mr. Kang to put me back to work!" Jungkook chuckled.

"See, you're who’s making a mistake. If I tell them there's nothing between us now, it'll be even worse for you. They'll think I used you and then dumped you. It'll only make your reputation worse." 

You pressed your fingers to your temples.

"Then what?" 

He slowly leaned toward you, his face too close, his perfume too seductive.

"I have another proposal. It will be beneficial for both of us." 

You stared at him questioningly, listening to your own heartbeat. 

"I don't want to marry Sukhi. But my parents want to make me. But if you pretend to be my girlfriend, the I can be free from the engagement." 

You were stunned by his words. Again pretend to be his girlfriend? That's ridiculous. It's nonsense. You laughed softly, looking at his face. 

"This game again? Where garanty you sure if you show me to your parents you stand free from the engagement? You said yourself that this marriage is good for business." 

"That's exactly the biggest problem. My parents are forcing me, putting pressure on me because of the business. But I don't want to do that. That's why I'm offering you this deal. You have to look as convincing as possible so that it is Sukhi who breaks off this engagement, or her father. And I will make sure that the media stops writing dirt about you, and instead of returning you to the position of the PR manager, I will give you a good job in the main company."

Jungkook stretched his lips in a smug smile, as if he was anticipating victory. He leaned even closer, clutching the steering wheel his hand.

"We'll be together," Jungkook said, savoring the words. "Going to events, showing up at restaurants, sometimes letting the paparazzi catch us in the act... Basically, doing everything a couple should do. I need Sukhi to believe that." 

You wrinkled your nose, and he almost laughed.

"That sounds like some kind of soap opera."

"It's business, kitten. It's just business. You get everything you want: reputation, job, money. And I get my freedom." 

"What if your fiancée comes to me to pull out all my hair?" Jungkook smiled even wider, leaning back.

"Sukhi? She's too proud to make a scene. She'd rather pretend to change her mind."

You rolled your eyes, but couldn't hide your skepticism.

"What if she doesn't change her mind?"

Jungkook hummed, his fingers drumming lazily on the steering wheel.

"Then we'll have to work a little harder."

You rolled your eyes.

"Fine. But what else is included in this 'little harder'? I assume you'll want some... public gestures?"

Jungkook nodded slowly, as if confirming your worst guess.

"Hugs, hand-holding, kissing. Nothing supernatural."

"Kissing?" you asked, even though it was the obvious thing you were supposed to do as a "couple".

It’s obvious, sure, but it has to be said: The first thing to catch his attention is going to be the beauty products. He already makes his own custom ones, but he wants to know what you’ve been using anyway. He’ll already be very pleased if he learns you have a routine of your own, and even more if you’re as interested in the topic as he is. He doesn’t get to really have conversations about those things often.

If you have no way of getting your usual products when you run out, he’s definitely going to try and replicate the formula for you, no matter how difficult it might be. Vil isn’t a person who expresses excitement in a very obvious way, but you can definitely feel it radiating from him when you show him all those cosmetics he’s never seen before.

Media is something he’s a bit pickier about, being a person who is in the entertainment industry himself — He’s open minded though, and if he has the time he’ll gladly watch and listen to all the things you like with you. He’ll be commenting on it very coolly and critically at first, even if he’s enjoying himself, but if you keep showing him things, you’re bound to run into something he’ll get really into…

…Which might just end up being whatever you consider your biggest guilty pleasure interest. He secretly indulges in hatewatching more often than you’d imagine. Will definitely have a time with the drama shows that are full of insane twists and dubious romantic relationships. Talks at length about how much the love interest sucks and how the protagonist deserves better, then vehemently denies that his interest is anything more than trainwreck watching effect. Right before he asks you to put on the next episode.

He does get curious about the food too, and he can be persuaded to try something if you’ve made it for him, but… you can kind of see the fear in his eyes if it’s anything visibly spicy. He’ll definitely enjoy dishes like bibimbap though.

𐙚 Rook Hunt

Being someone who is both remarkably nosy curious, and very devoted to finding beauty in everything, it’s not unlikely that Rook will be the one to initiate the conversation about your cultural background. He would have done that to anyone he’s interested in really, but the details of your behavior he’s picked up aren’t really things he’s seen before, which makes it all the more compelling to him.

He’ll be completely enthralled regardless of what topic you start your explanation with. Food, language, media, trends… It doesn’t matter, everything is equally as fascinating and just incredibly beautiful to him. He’s just happy to learn, but especially the things that matter to you the most— Meaning your favorite dishes, shows, songs…

Gets especially excited to try out the food, and extra especially if it’s the kind of thing you used to eat often back home. A person’s favorite foods can give you quite the glimpse into their background, after all! …He’s not the best at dealing with anything significantly spicy however. Will still insist for you to not tone it down with the seasoning, he’s very adamant about wanting to get the “authentic experience”. Determined to power through and build as much spice tolerance as he needs to.

He’ll definitely have a fun time with movies and shows too, as well as watching live performances of your favorite artists. As usual, he has quite a lot to say about the beauty of everything, but as much as he genuinely enjoys those things, his focus will always be on the things that are the closest and more meaningful to you— Which means, he’ll want to learn korean since the first time you said a word in it to him. Even if it’s something like the name of a dish or a place in Korea. Actually starts studying it pretty hard, planning to one day leave as many loving notes for you as he can write.

𐙚 Idia Shroud

Idia isn’t very interested in what's considered trendy anywhere, at any given moment. He does actually know quite a lot about what’s currently popular, but really just because he spends so much time online. His curiosity is a lot more based on wanting to know more about you, and the things you like and are part of your culture. He’d feel the same even if none of it was known by people who weren’t a part of it.

Surprises you by actually managing to name most makeup products correctly. Even though he insists he doesn’t watch these kinds of videos, not that there’s anything wrong with them — but when it comes to skincare, it’s a whole other story. Mentions he’s always wondered what ”the stuff in the dropper bottles” actually do, may question you on the importance of moisturizing after washing your face. He’ll let you do makeup on him if you want though. But only if you’re not going outside that day.

Definitely the type who would eat up k-pop immediately. You don’t need to tell him the names of your favorite idols more than once for him to remember, a lot of the music really caters to his tastes. He’ll have to mostly rely on you for updates, since your phone is the only one where the related apps actually work, but he may or may not be trying to get them to run on his.

Because of how much he gets into the music, he actually ends up being pretty curious about the language too. He wants to be able to sing along to his new fave’s songs accurately, after all— And you did also mention webtoons and manhwa, which also undoubtedly ended up with him binge reading a bunch and not wanting to wait for translations. If you can teach him anything, or even just point him to good sources, you may just get to witness just how fast of a learner he truly is.

(Besides, he does like the idea of being able to speak to you in a language that other people around you wouldn’t understand, kinda like a secret code — it makes him feel closer to you, he really wants to be able to do that one day.)

Do you have any headcanons about what L would be like in a romance? Your vision of Near literally blessed me and I hope you can do L justice, since in the media people see him as not caring about a potential partner and that leaves me disappointed :(

I'm absolutely thrilled and charmed you've liked what I've spun about Near, I'm devastated to admit I don't think I can do L justice to this degree… he's wonderful, but I'm not an L scholar who can write (stops writing this reply to check how much I've written on Near) 10,000~ words worth of ardent meta about him… but I'll talk a bit about him and write out the headcanons I do have.

Scrutinizing everything Ohba and Obata say about L in all of their interviews, it's clear to me they originally envisioned L as a bit heartless. But all Death Note media since - the anime, the films, the Change the WorLd novel, the J-Drama, the DS games, the musical - all favor an interpretation of L that's more compassionate and human. I have a crackpot theory that fan reception and Alessandro Juliani's (award-winning, I remind you) performance in the English dub influenced this shift, in a similar way to how a couple of Japanese videogames around that time got re-released in Japan with script changes influenced by English localizations (such as Treehouse's localizations for Animal Crossing: Population Growing! and Animal Crossing: Wild World).

Example: in HTR13, Ohba and Obata say that L was lying when he called Light his first friend. No other media since treats this as a lie. Especially in Change the WorLd - L wears Light's watch for the remainder of his life. Also, the novel and film are explicit that L is affected by the horrible things he's witnessed while solving cases and cares about justice for the victims. The novels aren't written by Ohba and Obata, but they did have oversight and endorsed M's work on publication (though perhaps not as passionately as Nisio Isin writing Another Note).

All this to say I think pinning down the "true" L is difficult. I will say that I reject any interpretation of L as callous and uncaring, the same way I reject interpretations of Near as wholly unemotional.

In romance, I think he is basically as he appears in "L the ProLogue to Death Note: Spiraling Trap". He is enigmatic and somewhat difficult to earn the trust of, but he cares deeply about the people in his circle of trust. I don't have a screenshot on hand, but there's a line in the game where he says he'd be disappointed with himself if he ever let (you) get hurt or endangered. This is L. In Death Note's canon, we see similar things with the Japanese Task Force (recall how genuinely upset he is when Ukita dies).

Anyway, my honest thoughts on L romance, based on on a combination of the manga, anime and the DS game where the player can court him.

Earth-shatteringly good kisser, even though he's definitely never kissed anyone before. He's been orally fixated his whole life, he has S-tier instincts and rather lacks shame. Obviously, he's immaculate at oral sex as well. Just another thing in his long list of Mary Sue traits: genius savant, internationally recognized super detective, skilled at capoeria, English tennis champion... it's completely reasonable that this is just another one of those things he's perfect at on first try.

He's capable of being gentle but has a tendency to escalate - even brief, innocent kisses often spin out of control and transform into desperate grabbing and tangling tongues.

Verbally and physically demonstrative about his affections, when the mood takes him. L consistently shows himself to be a pretty bold personality who doesn't shy away from closing in on what he wants. He kind of just heedlessly does what he wants a lot of the time, doesn't he? That extends to when he wants to be around you, have your attention, be doted on, be entertained, kiss you, have sex with you etc.

In general, I would describe a relationship with him as "intense". He's an intense man. I can understand a dizzying range of headcanons for L, but any idea of him as "relaxed" or "shy" or "passive" or anything like that is just plain wrong and contradicts the person we see in every piece of Death Note media.

Thinks he's straight but is in reality gender agnostic when it comes to falling in love/being attracted to somebody. In Spiraling Trap he's confused if a male player gives him a Valentine's day chocolate, but in my view it's just because he's never given serious thought to himself with another man before. Once he starts developing a strong bond, he'll start to think differently and find that he thinks women and men equally appealing.

Has a bunch of kinks including (but not limited to) foodplay, shibari, feet (cliche but I really think so) and more I don't want to list here for fear of scaring people (nothing objectionable, just weird - by his own admission he's "strange").

For the life of me I can't imagine him as asexual, but if he is, he's the kind that finds sex and kink incredibly interesting on an intellectual level and likes to observe, even if he doesn't partake.

While writing this, I kept feeling compelled to compare him to Near, which is really funny and meta. Near was intentionally written by his authors to have a lot of L's traits as his "natural successor", but at the same time he's his own, completely different person. I don't mean to derail this into a Nearpost so I'll be really brief.

Broad strokes: As a lover, L is intense, confident and open. Near is subtle and withdrawn.

Both men prefer an educated, clever partner who can keep up with them intellectually, but their relationship secret spices are different. L is drawn to people who are interesting and offbeat in some way. Near is drawn to passionate, emotional people who he admires and feels invigorated by.

Things they have in common in love: they are both used to being waited on and getting everything they want, and so expect to be pampered (L with desserts, Near with requisition lists for toys). Detective work takes a lot of their time and they don't want a demanding partner who asks for a lot of time and attention. They don't suffer fools. They can be tactless with their partner on various matters, but don't mean to be malicious.

Things they're very different on in love: L can be fickle and mercurial, Near is more reliable and steadfast. L expresses his feelings verbally quite openly and enjoys just spending time with his lover, Near relies on gift-giving and physical affection to express himself, forever feeling a little shy and poor with words. L enjoys sex and is a natural at it, Near could go without and is average at best even with practice (sorry).

my true (respectful) thoughts of arcane s2

so much of the promotional material promised so much in the way of vi and jinx/powder and their sisterly relationship, but i feel like with the amount of storylines/plotlines they did in this season, it was just too busy to focus on anyone–let alone the two supposed protagonists of the show. i think the best way for me to articulate how i feel about the writing of this show is that it fell flat, lost its heart, and emotional impact of the first season.

i would have been okay with them straying from my personal favourite focus if:

the storylines had been fleshed out better

the decisions the characters made actually made sense

main characters didn't become plot devices (vi)

new additions of the show weren't just plot devices (isha, loris, maddie, etc.)

motivations of characters made sense

characters had even small lines/dialogue to articulate their intentions/ideas

less time spent on off-screen development

and the thing is with the amount of plot lines they were ambitiously aiming to see out to fruition, its really hard to also set up all these new facets or opposing characteristics in former characters–plus adding new ones too. for example:

caitlyn's facist arc that didn't really have much meaning or attention

jinx's s1 mental collapse which changed abruptly into her redemption arc via isha (plot device)

jinx's revolutionist arc (first, reluctantly and then, willingly w ekko)

vi's pitfighter/brawler arc which was literally just one clip (which ended up being a teaser that showed everything)

im almost grateful to the minimal screen time ekko got bc they didn't try to change the core and essence of who he was in s1: he stayed true to himself. he's just a boy with a huge heart and love for his people that chose to leave his happy ending in an alternate timeline to return to the ppl who needed him where he is almost guaranteed heartbreak in some way or another.

i think the main reason so many ppl loved the first season was bc the characters were relatable in one way or another and they became so multidimensional when you explored how their environment/circumstances shaped them. but this season bc it was so purely focused on the endgame instead of HOW everyone got there, the characters fell flatter, they lost a soul and heart, and i felt the show lost its charm.

i know we all have our favourite characters and storylines we want the show to focus on and i would have been okay if i didn't get my way. if the show didn't focus on jinx and vi, i would've lived (although the promotional material was unfairly misleading) if the storylines, characters, and everything else made sense to me.

of course, the animation was lovely and the music was catchy/heartbreaking. i dont regret watching the show out to its final episode. it was one of the most beautiful visual experiences of my entire life. i still love the characters and will never regret staying on board until the final moments.

but i cant lie and say im not a little sad at how it ended too.

also, the voice actors did phenomenally. ella purnell just absolutely nails the delivery for every line and reed shannon also hurt me with how he portrayed ekko. so on and so forth.

but that being said, i also felt the dialogue and lines of each character felt much less impactful this season (again, writing.)

i liked viktor’s monologue at the end of act 2. that was compellingly well written

but the lines this season weren’t the same quality as silco’s monologue about drowning, jinx’s speech at the beginning of the doomed tea party, etc. everything just felt so flat and shallow this season overall.

“so, luff, today’s all about you. the food is on me!” ace grinned and patted his younger brother’s back. luffy’s eyes widened and sparkled with childish joy.

“you’re really the best, bro! can i pick the place too? there’s a new cafe that has opened up–” luffy started.

“your wish is my command” ace hummed and the younger one almost jumped out of his shoes, excitement over the roof.

well, it’s not everyday when ace visited his brother. as he moved out for university, they lost the ability to hang out that often. but it was summer, meaning ace could return to his hometown and his family.

“sanji went there already! he said the food was delicious – and ya know, he’s a cook! he knows the deal. he also said something about the service people… but i didn’t really care…” luffy put a pointing finger on his chin “it’s not that popular though… i hope they are open…”

ace listened with amusement to his little brother, soft smile on his lips. he missed him a bit more than he’d like to admit – the absence of his energetic yells was almost crushing in his quiet, lonely apartment.

upon arriving, they noticed it’s a very small and almost hidden from the society’s view cafe.

luffy barged in, doors swinging open, a sound of a doorbell ripping through the air.

it was empty inside, only soft sound of jazz music filling the room.

“yahoo! anyone here?” luffy hummed, looking around. then he came up to the check out, eyeing the menu. ace went to pick a seat.

a gentle voice spoke out, drawing the brothers’ attention.

“yes, welcome, come in! how can i help you?” the waiter asked with a happy smile. ace checked his phone upon realizing his not getting any say in the food choice anyway.

“can i see the menu?”

after what it felt like ages, luffy came back. buzzing with excitement, he tapped ace’s souldwr repeatedly.

“that lovely person gave us a food testing deal, so i ordered literally everything! isn’t it just the best day ever?” the younger one grinned, giggling boyishly.

ace frowned and turned his head to look at the cashier but they were gone. it was a bit suspicious but he didn’t want to burst his brother’s bubble. shrugging, he put his phone away and focused on luffy.

after a while, the waiter brought all the food that took up all the space on the table.

“are you sure you’ll eat everything?” the waiter asked and ace looked up, suddenly struck by their beauty. the name tag read ‘y/n’ with a small heart next to it.

“duh!” luffy puffed his chest proudly and dug in, not realizing how mesmerised his brother was.

“enjoy your meal, then! if you need anything else just let me know” you smiled and went back behind the counter.

ace smirked, an idea blooming in his head, and started eating as well.

he was a good lover, that was no lie. he has eaten lots and lots of delicious meals but those… those tasted like heaven. this carrot cake or rice pudding… could top sanji’s cooking, for sure.

there’s a saying “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” for a reason.

while exchanging joyous nods with luffy, ace knew he’ll leave this cafe with more than a full stomach.

“um, excuse me?” ace called and walked up to the check out, drumming his fingers against his wallet.

you came from the storage room, wiping your hands against your apron. a bright smile painted on your lips.

“yes?”

“i’d like to order another thing” ace smiled and with the corner of his eye he noticed how his words peaked luffy’s interest.

“mhm, of course! and what would it be?” you asked, looking at him interested. he (and his brother) were definitely unusual clients.

“two cups of cappuccino and an orange juice. and a dessert… of your choice, y/n” he said smugly and leaned against the counter, his muscular arm flexing.

your eyes widened… then your brows frowned and nose scrunched. ace giggled upon your reaction and winked.

“you should join us, y/n” ace hummed and then realized one thing: you’re at work “oh, i mean, unless the owner minds it but i can take the blame”

“oh, no. there will be no need for that. i’m the owner and i will certainly don’t mind” you sent him a soft smile and saw his lips turn into an o in awe “i’ll bring the coffee and be right back”

“ace, can i have your brownie muffin?!” luffy yelled.

in a blink of an eye you arrived, steaming cups of coffee and an orange juice. placing them down on the table, squeezing the dessert too, you pulled up a chair and sat down.

“i hope you enjoyed your food?” you looked expectantly at luffy.

“my friend, if i could marry a meal… i’d marry them all!” the younger brother cheered and you laughed.

ace’s heart melted – the sound of your laughter was the cutest sound ever.

“thank you so much, i really appreciate it” you hummed, grabbing your coffee cup. ace did the same and his heart skipped a beat when he saw that you made a heart out of foam at the top of his beverage.

“so you’re the owner? is it hard to own a cafe?” he asked before taking a sip.

you chatted with the brothers for a long time, occasionally pausing to serve the other customers that would come in. or to deliver more food for luffy.

ace fell for you with each word, gesture… everything you did.

before you realized it was the closing hour, sun setting behind the windows.

“we’ll get going, this guy has an important exam that he has to cram for!” luffy whined, puffing his cheeks and pointing at ace “i’d love to stay longer…”

“feel free to visit me whenever! don’t tell it to anyone but you might just be my favorite customers” you winked and luffy chuckled, packing his stuff.

“do you need any help though? we made a mess…” ace asked, looking at the table with empty dishes (and some stains from luffy’s messy eating)

“no, no, don’t worry. i don’t want to keep you busy. good luck with cramming!” you grinned.

“thank you” ace sent you a warm smile and pulled out his wallet to leave the payment since you already told them what the checkout is going to be (you didn’t mention you included a huge discount too).

when you came back from the kitchen where you put away the dirty dishes, the brothers were gone.

you walked up to take another part of the dishes when something caught your eye.

next to the bill there was a napkin with something scribbled on it.

Shadow High series 3 my new beloved

I didnt even like most of em until i saw them in person, but the knowledge that they'll probably never be in the show has my brain in a "well its free realestate" kinda mood

Random list of information cuz ive been plotting out friend dynamics and background lore

-i like to pretend Rainbow High/Shadow High are actually Rainbow University/Shadow University cuz im in art college Right Now and i think it makes more sense with the whole dorm room situation. And also major makes more sense than focus IMO

-I changed Pinkie's major from film to just undeclared. I think she eventually does land on Film. She just has a lot of interests! Her dream has always been to one day direct films, and I think she comes to love them even more while developing ideas her with the group as she winds up in a Director/Producer position for most of them. BUT also every time she takes a class in a different program she cant help but fall in love with that way of making art too. So she has a hard time picking for a while and changed her major a couple times before landing on Film.

-Pinkie and Berrie bond a lot over a shared interest in vocal synths (tho Berrie knows more about them than her).

-The two made Pinkie's vtuber model together!

-the fandom wiki says PJ is from germany?? Idk how canon that is tbh but ive decided to embrace it i guess

-Rooney's canon name is Scarlet Rose, but i thought it was kinda lame especially when Rosie Redwood is also in this line sooo I renamed her! Stuck to the color name puns tho. Mar Rooney. Maroon. Haha

-Speaking on her though i love that shes from texas and likes writing scifi mystery type stuff and that being said i just Know deep in my bones that she was a Voltron Legendary Defender fan and Keith was/is 100% her favorite. She has a continued fondness for mothman specifically cuz of this.

-PJ and Rooney actually talk about fandom and shows/movies ALL the time. They dont have a ton of overlapping interests, but where they do? The two literally never shut up.

-Rosie is such a random character, like outside of her design she feels very poorly considered. So I scrapped the cosmetology thing and made her an illustrator instead! I think it works better with her love of making art in nature. I can see her being really into illustrated guide books. I think shes a bit snooty when it comes to art too. It takes being friends with other artists to become more open minded.

-I like the idea that Rosie is mainly friends with Rooney and Berrie ontop of that. The three of them often tag team storylines and how theyd interpret them into different mediums. Rosie will draw up a bunch of concept stuff while Rooney writes up a pitch bible and Berrie will start making shit move and throwing in her own ideas on camera angles and character designs.

-as an animation major Berrie was required to take a sound design class early on, which is where she met Oliver! Hes very laid back, and likes to go with the flow, but functions a little like the "mom" of the group. Often reminding the girls to take breaks, drink water, stop looking at their screens lest they get eye strain etc. He's multi-talented tbh but Music is his one true passion and he likes how the girls are always giving him collaboration opportunities.

-Oliver and Rosie like to talk sports a lot, both having played a bunch when they were younger and throughout high school.

-Lavender Lynn is Oliver's number one "person who needs constant reminders to settle down" she is in a constant buzz of trying to get the best shots and is utterly obsessed with the process of artistic documentation. Everything must be documented.

-the whole school loves her for this actually, she has a whole side gig where other students hire her to help photograph their projects. She saves everything she earns from this for her future dream plans to visit paris. She has it set really, many of the artists who she helps photograph now will remain steadfast clients of hers forever onward.

-PJ and Lynn actually took a print media class together at one point. Which didnt at the time spark an everlasting friendship. But it did give PJ an easier in to ask for Lynn's help documenting a project the group was working on. One of Lynn's first times photographing them work happened to fall on a day where Rosie had planned to trick everyone into going on a nature walk sans devices... Lynn wound up really appreciating this outing and decided to continue hanging around the group even after that project had ended.

Day 9

What are some of your favorite tracks from the OST?

I HAVE SOOOOOO MANY so this is extremely difficult. I shall attempt to trim it down as much as possible so it's not an overwhelming list hahaha. The music for OW in general is just really important to me. Many scenes would be nothing if not for the music. And the music even helped inspire a lot of scenes and story beats.

Orlam's Revenge: The composer of this, Kohrogi, was a huge inspiration for much of Arcs 1-3, and I use a ton of their tracks in the game. This song in particular was one I fell in love with instantly and I remember going into writing the scene in Arc 1 hoping it would live up to this track as I already knew I wanted to use it here.

Genzou's Theme (all versions): This was one of the songs that didn't hit me until Arc 4 and I used a slowed-down version of the music box version for his death. But in general I love how I was able to have the different versions to connect the different moments with him, from happy, to touching, to tragic.

Tarantella for Three: Another one of those songs I knew as soon as I heard that I wanted to use it, and it helped inspire much of the ballroom scene and just how ridiculously chaotic and crazy it turned out. Such a great track.

What Am I Gonna Do With You: This song really made the Stall scene in Arc 4. I still get chills when I rewatch/play that scene because of it. It translates the vibes I had in my head so absolutely perfectly.

Breaching the Castle: God why is this track so good??? It makes that whole scene SO EPIC. I remembered the first time I played it all the way through after I finished coding everything and it made me so affected hahaha. I love it when a track turns a scene up to 11, and it was really necessary for that scene, too.

Genzou and Orlam: This song really made that cutscene... even just the vibes of it encapsulates so much of their dynamic and past and what they've been through. Just listening to it starts to make my heart clench. And that hit at the end that I timed the hug to would routinely make me tear up while working on it.

Fate's End: I think I planned this song for that escaping the castle part in Arc 5 like... a whole year before I actually worked on that scene LOL Something about it just made me know I needed a song there after everything that would happen in the castle. I think I pictured it in my mind like some kind of dark animated closing sequence.

The Keeper of the Woods: When I found this song I just sat in awe as I listened to it and knew immediately I needed to use it. And the little part in the middle where it goes all dark and minor with the violins followed by that sweeping choral part literally inspired the glitched-out OFW cutscene. Just a fantastic track.

My Choice: DON'T MAKE ME LISTEN TO THIS SONG I'LL START SOBBING DKJFLKADJFADSFAD

Oh god I still ended up choosing so many... and there were so many I wanted to put on but left off. I really just love the music in this game so much. It's such a deeply ingrained part of the experience, and the game would not be what it is without it (both in the presentation and in the inspiration it provided).

The subtext of hunger, agriculture, food crisis vis-a-vis scapegoating and “othering” in Wicked

I just watched the WICKED movie the other day. This is my second night after having watched that movie. I’ve read the book, watched the musical, and now, watched the movie. I am writing this immediately after I woke up after lucid dreaming, some themes and commentary hiding in plain sight having been made clear in my dream.

So.

Oz is a highly agricultural land. From the depiction of a largely agrarian society in Munchkinland to the triggering events that shape its society, this much is clear.

Right off the bat, in the movie, Dr. Dillamond attributes the scapegoating of the Animals to the Great Drought, where the people, hungry and frustrated, wanted someone to blame. (As a side note, I am curious whether Madame Morrible is alive and already competent a sorceress during those times. I am don’t remember the dates, but come Oz suffers from Great Drought when there’s a weather-manipulating sorceress in the picture? This to me is suspicious in the same way Morrible’s hand in Nessa’s demise is, or will be.)

This already sets the precedent of the public consciousness being pliable to “other” sectors of society and deprive them of their rights, if it meant being able to get-over a real but complex societal problem like poverty and hunger. Sounds like Nazi Germany and today’s current climate, right? It does. The propensity for fascism exists within Oz’s culture.

Now this part may sound like a stretch, but I argue that there is subconscious reason why they sprang out of the creators’ imagination.

I’m not gonna talk about witches and their significance as an historically oppressed group and the metaphor of a witch as society’s constant attempts to snuff out women empowerment. Y’all already know that.

Obviously, the solution to a drought is water. And I cant help but remember how water is significant in the story. In the classical tale, Dorothy melts the Wicked Witch of the West into a puddle by throwing a bucket of water at her. In the books, Elphaba is deathly allergic to water. This is not the case in the musical and movie, but she does take advantage of that ridiculous rumor and a bucket of water gets thrown at her. In the movie, and as I’ve seen many point out, during Elphaba’s iconic scene, storm clouds punctuate her rise to power. But Elphaba isn’t known to manipulate the weather. You know who is? Madame Morrible. Storm clouds and thunder are gather to literally make Elphaba appear villainous, fearsome, and menacing. Spoilers, but, Elphaba wasn’t able to see her political aspirations bear fruit. Going back to the drought imagery, Elphaba, a symbol of otherness herself exists as a figure that seeks to correct the undue scapegoating and political disenfranchisement that people chose to wrongfully resort to. They may wreathe her in stormclouds all they want, but as force of nature herself, her moral stance in all these injustice, her advocacy, is correct and righteous. She and everything she stands for water to the Ozian’s moral drought: clear, purifying, quenching. A path to wash away the sins of society and clean its conscience anew.

The resulting “othering”, scapegoating, and disenfranchisement of the Animals, of Elphaba, were not mere reactions to a harrowing social ill. The Great Drought and its direct effects (poverty and hunger) and the trauma it entrenched in collective Ozian consciousness were taken advantage of by political figures. Leaders people looked up to but were unable to solve the problem. So instead of taking accountability, they chose to shift it on others instead, employing propaganda. The “greenness” of Emerald City is an illusion of the Wizard, the phony spectacles masking the glaring inequality in its metropolitan affluence as opposed to the more agricultural provinces and distracting from holding leaders responsible to effect true and direct solutions. After all, if there were no problems, who would the people look up to? It is all a fake. This “greenness” is a fake to Elphaba’s real. It’s a “greenness” that co-opts and imposes conformity, calling one to willful blindness and perpetuating that same culture of division and disenfranchisement. A “greenness” that is not the same as and inevitably clashes with Elphaba’s own: a greenness forged by the same “othering”, stigma, and disenfranchisement but with a sense of self and a sense of justice to effect social change that would end the cycle.

I got to see Wicked last night, and whoo boy I have thoughts. Cut for spoilers, you've been warned.

I'm looking forward to seeing the 'Good News' song at the end of the second movie - Glinda already looked conflicted about the Giant Elphie Effigy (good lord those munchkins work fast)

Also, I thought the movie highlighted better that those in Munchkinland knew Elphaba her whole life, and this is still how hard they bought in to the propaganda.

The little hint that Glinda's bubble is all mechanics. Chef's kiss.

Glinda's bubble has a Designated Landing Place. Just. Consider all that implies, with Glinda having been until very recently the Wizard's goodwill ambassador.

'Take it away' will never not be heartbreaking. Also, of course Elphaba is going to grow up a fierce defender of animal rights, she was raised by a talking animal, and that bear was the only one to be kind to her consistently through her childhood. Dafuq.

Baby!Nessa!Rose's little meeps. Just. I died.

'Oh, they're going to miss me.' Galinda I love you you ridiculous gal.

I like this twist on why Elphaba was at Shiz. I loved the way she so desperately wanted to go, but couldn't ask for herself. I loved her trying to defend Nessa Rose's independence... and then still being blamed for stifling her. Excellent.

Also did y'all see the picture of the animals behind the cracked and fallen fresco of the Wizard in that scene? Foreshadowing my beloved.

Galinda writing a little 'it's great' card put on top of the saddest pile of bedding you've ever seen.

'What is this Feeling?' omfg. I loved Elphaba putting her foot down about the roommate situation.

I also liked that they moved Elphaba's talk with Dr. Dillamond off-campus. It makes more sense that this status-quo challenging talk would be done away from the powers that be.

Also it sets up Fiyero running into Elphaba (literally) better, and omfg. I love that horse, he's great, more horse in the second movie please.

Omg Galinda flirting. And Fiyero flirting back, but Galinda (and Elphaba) missing that at that point Fiyero was flirting with pretty much everyone because hey, it's fun, it's easy, and it works.

On that note, Fiyero flirting successfully with the librarian. <3

The whole Ozdust scene. All of it. The outfits, the dancing, the prolonged social anxiety/social embarrassment. The way Elphaba refuses to show she's been hurt. The way Galinda finally understands that. THE DANCE APOLOGY.

I did find it a little weird that one of the only lines cut from the musical was the 'Lemons and melons and pears. Oh my' bit between Boc and Nessa Rose.

Also can we talk about how excellent Jonathan Bailey is as Fiyero?

'Popular' is, as always, fantastic. And highlights just how good Galinda is going to be at the politics of this world.

'That might be your secret, but that doesn't make it the truth' AUGH GALINDA just rip out my heart why don't you.

I liked that when Elphaba rescues the lion cub, she's more restrained/talented than in the beginning of the movie. It makes sense, she's been learning all this time.

The mushroom things during 'I'm Not That Girl', idk what those were but they were so so pretty lord I love the world-building.

That scene of Nessa Rose, Boc, Galinda, and Fiyero all together, and Elphaba on the outside in the dark. Fiyero looking out over the courtyard as he's being pulled away. Augh, all of it.

The way the students turned on a dime the second Elphaba got that invitation.

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth getting singing roles, YES, THANK YOU, that was such a great surprise, I was squeaking like bebe Nessa Rose.

On the flip side... sigh. I called it. Jeff Goldblum was... very Jeff Goldblum. That guy, while a lot of fun, is the exact same character in pretty much everything he's been in for the last few years. I still think that casting was a mistake. Hear me out: The original Wizard was Joel Grey. Joel Grey was also the Emcee in Cabaret. ... so tell me it wouldn't both be great casting and an awesome call back to have casted Alan Cumming as the Wizard. I can't have everything I guess.

Also, and it might be just me/the effects of a late night screening, but when Elphaba and Galinda are walking into the palace, with the doors slamming behind them, and there's a scene with the torchlit hall behind them? Didn't the fire look like how the flames in the original Wizard of Oz movie looked? Just sort of... fuzzier and blurred than how film tends to pick up fire these days? It might have just been me.

Also this movie does have a bit of the Les Mis problem - you've got some cast members with serious vocal chops... and theeeeeen there's the ones that... tried hard. Great actors every single one, but would it have killed the director to find people for those roles that could match vocally as well? This movie doesn't need big names. We're not going for the big names, people.

I liked how the movie explained better why the Wizard not being able to read from the Grimorie was such a big deal.

The monkeys. Oh, the flying monkeys. Also the scene of Madam Morrible framed by flying monkeys. Thanks for breaking my heart.

Untitled Kairi Post

Y'know what? In a way, Kairi was tragically doomed as a character from the very beginning.

"Oh, because she was a love interest and damsel in distress!"

No. Myths, fairy tales and, well, Disney movies have used those tropes for ages, and if you're doing a story where a huge point is the influence of those things, it's kind of a given that the leading lady be a love interest and damsel in distress. And the writing is smart enough to put a twist on the trope given that Kairi's distress is much less than it appeared to be because she's Sora's love interest and he's her's, and after Sora saves her she saves him right back.

"Oh, because she wasn't a playable character or party member!"

No. It would have been nice to have the playable puzzle solving-based Kairi sequence they initially planned at Hollow Bastion, but I can understand why it was removed given how it would slow down the pace following what is perhaps the signature sequence of the game. And in any case it doesn't have any bearing on how things went for the rest of the series, given that Riku also was not a playable character or party member (he just had a crappy AI when pretending to help you fight Parasite Cage all so that he could kidnap Pinocchio).

"Oh, because she was stuck in a coma the whole game!"

NO! God damn it, how much must the game beat the point into your stupid head!?

And who could forget?

Stop laughing right now.

Kairi. Not just "her heart". KAIRI. Since the heart = the person.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it exposes some serious sexism if one goes with the "Kairi was in a coma" line for KH1 and yet says "Ventus was inside of Sora" post BBS, since it's literally the exact same situation except that Kairi was always awake within Sora's heart as opposed to Ventus only waking up at the end of 3D. It's why Sora felt things regarding Hollow Bastion, why he experienced the memory of Kairi and her grandfather, and why he saw and heard Kairi multiple times. He wasn't hallucinating; that was always really her.

So, enough beating around the bush. What did I actually mean, then?

Well....let's start at the beginning.

Kairi's arc in the original Kingdom Hearts is not just told through the writing. Utilizing a video game as a visual/audible medium, it is also told through animation, voicework and music. During her introductory cutscene, we see Kairi asked by Sora if she remembers the world she was born in before being sent to Destiny Islands. "I told you before. I don't remember." She answers this sincerely. "Nothing at all?" Sora responds. That's when we see this detail.

"Nothing." Kairi is lying. She doesn't remember everything given the trauma caused by being forced out of her old home, but she does remember just enough to understand why it was traumatic. She had a comfortable life there, and a family. She was happy. And then it was all gone in an instant. Now, on Destiny Islands, she is similarly content ("Well, I'm happy here.") and fears risking that same loss. And yet a small part of her still yearns for the past. She loved what she can recall of her past, as she loves her present. She fears only the future.

Riku's fixation on his existential woes and the mysteries of the universe, while also putting her up on some sort of pedestal like she's something special, is not helping at all. Something about it feels wrong to Kairi...wrong and uncomfortably familiar. It's making her very anxious.

But Kairi has someone to lean on and help her keep up an optimistic, cheerful front, perhaps enough to talk herself into believing it: Sora. And during this scene, we hear the track "Kairi I":

This track reflects Kairi's character in this moment. While there is a subtle undercurrent of worry, her heart is strong enough to not let it get to her and look on the bright side as she looks out to the sun setting over the ocean. With Sora's reassurance, she is able to feel as though her home and friends won't change or go away no matter what happens on her, Sora and Riku's planned voyage, which allows her to feel anticipation for it. All finally feels right.

Of course, things were not right, and Kairi ended up in heart form as her body and soul were lost to darkness along with Destiny Islands. From Kairi's POV, she is now in the Station of Awakening (aka Dive to the Heart) and can do little but watch Sora's adventures as she can see them through his eyes, not fully putting it together why she can and where she truly is.

In the scene at Merlin's House, we get to hear "Kairi II".

While it's similar to "Kairi I", there is now a more somber and mysterious feel to it given the present circumstances. While she doesn't know if Sora can hear her, Kairi wistfully waxes nostalgic over how Merlin's House reminds her of the Secret Place on Destiny Islands. And while Kairi feels sad over missing that place, she's also happy that there are places like it elsewhere in the universe. She's clearly learning as much from Sora's journey as Sora is.

Finally, we hear "Kairi III" in the flashback with little Kairi and her grandmother.

And while it starts out reflecting Kairi's childhood innocence, it ends up turning...almost sad. The reason why being one of the most overlooked details of the scene: at the end of the grandmother's story, she disappears, and little Kairi is shown moving her head all around looking for her. This isn't actually part of the memory, but a reflection of Kairi's heart. She knows that she had a grandmother and that her grandmother isn't here anymore, but she can't remember how her grandmother "left". But she at least still exists...within her heart.

Speaking of which, once Kairi's heart returns to her body and Sora loses his heart in the process, Kairi puts her foot down. She may have learned how to better deal with and accept change and loss, but a line still has to be drawn somewhere and Sora is that line for her.

Thus is she able to save him. Later, we see her worry about the future and things changing again when she questions whether anything can be the same between her, Sora and Riku again after the corruption Riku had underwent. Once again, Sora boosts her optimism.

More importantly, he helps her learn, as he does, that even when separated you can take strength in keeping your loved ones (metaphorically) in your heart, and that even if things change and Kairi is cut off from the people and things she loves, they will always exist within her heart, just as with her grandmother and the story she told her about light and darkness.

This is why, in the end, Kairi is able to let Sora go and yet still feel content.

 Regardless of warnings, the future doesn't scare me at all.  Nothing's like before.

This is a really good, really well done character arc.

It's also a very human character arc.

Yes, there are a lot of fantastical things going on, but when you put all of that aside, what are you left with? A young girl moves away from her old home and everything that she ever knew and loved, which gives her anxiety about the same thing happening with the new home and everything that she's come to know and love from it, which now includes a certain boy. She fears the future; she fears change. In the end, she ends up staying in her new home - but the boy moves away! However, through her time spent with him she's learned to accept this because he'll always be a part of her heart, which is something that won't ever change.

When put that way, it sounds positively mundane, and by and large the KH fandom - and Tetsuya Nomura himself for that matter - don't want or like mundane stuff like that. They want the crazy, the overdramatic, the angsty, the flashy, the anime tropeyness they're familiar with. This is why they were unreceptive to Kairi's arc to the fullest degree, as in many of them are literally unaware it even happened because they were too busy fixating on the archetypal Japanese media-style dick measuring contest between Sora and Riku (which is also far deeper than they tend to give it credit for, btw, but I digress). And if that's the case, then the question gets raised: why bother focusing on or expanding Kairi at all? She doesn't "sell".

THIS is why Kairi was doomed from the start. It's not her fault. But it's sadly the truth.
