Lies can’t be considered to be completely bad. Sometimes you must avoid the truth to be safe, to protect… to seek. You left home with the excuse of a research project for your thesis. Truth is, you wanted to know what happened to your brother.
He graduated with a business degree and left for Chicago but after hearing nothing from him two months later, your parents went to the police.
None could be done. He was simply gone.
But you didn’t believe that. There was more, there had to…
With luck, you discovered your brother left Chicago two days after his arrival, and then boarded a plane with a route to Seoul. With almost zero comprehension of why he would leave the country, hell, the damn continent! It resulted astonishing to you.
It was so great you needed to get answers that you ventured into the unknown. You didn’t know how to speak Korean, you didn’t know much about the country you landed eight months ago.
And you didn’t believe a hundred percent about faith or destiny. But your first clues to your missing brother lead to a man who looked at a card in his hands while he flipped it continuously.
That was Seong Gi-hun. A man who had lost everything and then won but didn’t feel like that afterward.
For some weeks, you couldn’t process the fact that your brother was dead. He had joined some games deathly games that were worth it for many since you could leave as a wealthy winner.
Even more senseless because perhaps your family wasn’t rich, but your brother couldn’t have anything else than student debts and that was something that most adults could deal with.
It all led to drowning in sorrows and thinking your efforts to find him were in vain. The year your brother played the games was 2022 and the winner wasn’t him.
Gi-hun didn’t give up on you. He took care of you when he didn’t have to. Later told you about his plans and suggested you join him.
For your brother.
It was for his memory that you agreed to learn how to wield and use a gun. For his memory, you decided to stay and overcome the people behind those hideous games.
Leading you to become a ghost. Working as a teacher’s assistant until the plan was coming closer and you had to quit. Living in a rented apartment until you had to move out to a little house Gi-hun bought under a pseudonym for you to use while he was inside the games. He assured you could take all you needed from the money he had. Although you didn’t like to do so, you had to because you no longer had a job.
And for a long time, you had to be at the subway station looking for an apparent handsome, tall businessman who offered to play Ddakji and slapped people when they lost. Nobody had seen the salesman yet.
You avoided judging beauty but you hadn’t seen anyone who you considered to be handsome, and no man was slapping people.
Between lifting weights, practicing core strength, having no job and searching for a businessman who bullied random people, you had found a routine.
A lonely routine. You held some camaraderie with the men who also looked for the salesman, but you hadn’t found a real friend other than Gi-hun.
It was late when you were told they had found the salesman. Rain poured and you were at a restaurant having dinner. With hurried feet you took a cab that left you at the door of the solitary pink motel, never noticing certain cops looking from the other side of the street.
When you opened the door, you heard voices and secluded cries. You pulled out your gun and carefully walked towards the pleading sounds.
In a room, there lays a tied man, pleading for freedom. You know him; it’s Choi Woo-Seok.
His eyes are teary, he’s beaten and shakes desperately. You only let him know with his hands to quiet down and to calm down.
Both of your hands are on the trigger. You slowly walk back towards the entrance, where the voices can still be heard. You identify Gi-hun as there. So you try to be more careful, even when the music playing disturbs you.
The darkness of the room makes it easier for you to disguise. That’s when you can see the men sitting in the middle of the room.
They’re playing the Russian roulette and it makes you frown from cringe and panic.
It wasn’t hard to understand that the man facing Gi-hun was none other than the salesman.
He was indeed handsome. He looked like a clean and neat businessman, and the way he arrogantly spoke and held his gun said a lot about him. He was insane.
The only thing you can care about is to prevent death. Your hand doesn’t shake, fingers confidently on the trigger, waiting for the right moment while your free hand sneaks inside the pocket of your coat, pulling another loaded gun.
When the salesman raises the gun, pointing at the ceiling and he is busy talking, you pull the trigger.
Both men turned to look at you in surprise.
Gi-hun suddenly looks relieved, while the salesman stares at you so deeply that it makes you nervous for a second.
But your reflexes were fast enough to see that he was about to move, so you pointed at him with the other gun, shooting at him with a potent sedative right in his shoulder.
“Where did you get that?” Gi-hun asked you. “A month ago, in the kitchen of the Chinese lady’s restaurant around the block”
“Thank you” You nod at him, seeing how he went straight untie the man in the other room.
You look back at the salesman, who is unconscious on the couch. Slowly, you walk towards him. Almost nervous that he would move, jump out and kill you, but it’s impossible.
Your hands start wandering around his neck, taunting his skin and fabric covering it to see if he possesses a microphone or camera that would put everyone in danger.
At the same time, a cop arrives, accusing you and Gi-hun of killing the salesman.
Everything changed in the span of a night.
He woke up to the smell of alcohol. His eyes could barely focus but he knew his head was in the lap of a woman. He knew he was in handcuffs and his feet were tied up.
Between faded memories, he remembered your face and hands pointing a gun at him.
When he tried to focus his view again, he realized you had stood up, he saw your blurred silhouette glancing around the room until he felt more oriented. He could hear you talking in English, often mixing words in Korean with bad pronunciation. Something about a doctor and ordering Mexican food for takeout.
Pretty woman, he thought. From your sophisticated and unusual pick of heels, your dress and coat, your earrings, hair, and shade of lipstick. You truly were a sight.
Once you hang up, you turnto see him seemingly awake.
“Gi-hun! The freak is awake!” you yell, making him frown.
Freak? He has been an honest gentleman with you.
“Your Korean is not good” his voice sounds raspy and he can barely sit straight with his extremities tied up.
“Neither is your English” he chuckles briefly.
Choi Woo-Seok appears at the door and looks scared at the salesman, who barely eyes him, still focused on you.
“Gi-hun left with Jun-ho to speak properly” You roll your eyes, nodding.
“Alright. I ordered food for everyone, the dentist is coming to check Gi-hun and this man over here. Keep an eye on that, please” he nods, closing the door and leaving you alone with the salesman again.
“I guess I’ll have to do it myself” you basically whisper to yourself.
“A doctor?” Ignoring the man, you step almost between his legs and you sense he got taken aback by the proximity.
“Take off your clothes” his eyes opened a little more and you almost laughed.
“Excuse me?” one of his brows looked slightly arched, half playfully and half taken aback.
“Take off your clothes, sir” you repeated, trying to sound calm.
“I’m afraid I’m handcuffed and tied from my ankles, miss” he shows you his hands and oddly moves his free fingers.
“Hmm, too bad. I will then…”
You only made him look like a mess. But you found a tiny camera and microphone well hidden in his blazer.
Your hands never trembled over his skin. And unbeknownst to you, he was on fire. You even cleaned the blood on his face and he discovered how soft your hands were.
Once you crushed the camera and microphone, you took a seat in the same place Gi-hun was an hour ago, facing the salesman.
“Two years ago you handed a card to a man. He was non-native, had green eyes, ebony hair, tall like you, and was very friendly” you start, feeling a pang in your chest while describing your brother.
Meanwhile, the man thought back on the hundreds of people he had tricked. It was easier since less than 8% of the players were non-Koreans.
“Ah, yes, I remember him. Very expressive and handsome. You people from the occidental are very extroverted” he said with a cheeky smile and you almost rolled your eyes. “That was your brother, I’m assuming”
“He was, and yes; While you only made an offer and he accepted, you didn’t tell him his life was at stake” The way he looked at you with arrogance made your blood boil.
“Ma’am, the games are made for the mere reason of helping people. It is just one lucky individual who takes the prize”
“Bullshit. It is entertainment for the rich and a purge of innocent people you and your shitty folks believe are useless. I come from the epitome of capitalism, don’t fool me” he stares too much at you. In his head, he wondered why you got so invested in the whole situation. You seemed young, smart, pretty even. Why were you wasting your mundane life trying to be a hero?
“You and Gi-hun are not saviors, miss. Him trying to contact my boss is useless. You keeping me here, is pointless. The games will go on and my superiors will succeed, while you will watch and hate that your attempts to stop it were worthless” he says.
You huff tired, walking back and forth in the little motel room.
“Good lord, Why are you so obsessed with protecting an organization that will likely replace you the moment your heart stops beating?” He tilts his head, with his hands in cold handcuffs under the table and a little smirk. He almost looks adorable.
“I know where you come from. I know you have never experienced the extreme lack of money. I was doing my research when my superior; The Frontman, found a foreign woman working with Mister Gi-hun” In his words, you try to hide the fear. Of these people hurting your family. Of them knowing more than they should about your plans with Gi-hun and Jun-ho. “Don’t be fearful, ma’am. We have no business with people outside of Korea. But you shouldn’t be digging along those filthy scums. Now you’re also part of this”
The silence makes him feel like he won. His smile is pretty, but he was a fucking asshole.
“And for what miss y/n? For your brother? Who proved to be desperate and needy like everybody else. A man who died and nobody came for him…” he leaned, showing you his cuffed hands and mocking you with every bashful word he spitted out.
Your eyes get teary. You sigh, nodding and looking away. The salesman stared at you with ease, believing he had won once again.
But you take him by surprise when the heel of your boot kicks his ribs and sends him to the floor.
You quickly grab your gun and kneel beside him. The barrel of the gun traces his temple and cheekbone slowly as you lean to his ear.
“You are a man and I’m a woman who are simple mortals. Quit with the arrogance and start speaking the truth” you spit out with feigned sweetness. Your knee brushes his lips and he only looks at you defenseless, but soon goes back to smile. “Why don’t you try to be a good boy for me, sir…”
“You waste your time, dolly,” he says in Korean and makes you frown.
“Fuck you” you spit at him, literally. You couldn’t care less if you weren’t acting decent. The salesman could go to hell. You just grew more eager for Gi-hun and Jun-ho to accomplish the mission.
The door was softly closed even when your ears were ringing in anger. Gi-hun and Jun-ho were standing, expecting you.
“Did he say anything?” you sighed, shaking your head. “He’s a fucking asshole”
“We can’t give up. The plan must keep going but now that we have him, he could give us details” You nod at the young ex-cop. Gi-hun only huffed but ended up agreeing as well.
“The only way to keep him steady is if you stay with him” Your heart almost stops as you look at Jun-ho feeling mortified.
“Me?” He nods, crossing his arms.
“Either way is dangerous for y/n. She’s definitely not coming with me to the games, she shouldn’t go searching the island, and staying alone with that sociopath will not calm me while I’m gone” The worry in Gi-hun made you smile a little, he really cared about you and it made you feel like everything was worth it.
For him, your brother and anyone who had joined or planned to join the games.
“I will stay with him. We would be pretty much isolated and if we stay together 24/7, I shall be fine”
“You will be protected, you have my word,” Jun-ho says softly.
“I won’t be able to see you tomorrow. Take care of yourself, use any of the money, and do not give up on making the salesman speak” The tone the older man uses makes you feel a little teary, it’s a goodbye. “Jun-ho and Woo-Seok will keep you safe. And if anything happens to me, take all the money and go back home”
You frown, continuously shaking your head.
“Gi-hun, I wouldn’t be able to leave if something happened to you. I would stay until I knew what happened” he smiled, giving you a quick hug before he got his jacket.
“Keep your eyes open, kid” you nod, wishing him farewell.
The room fell into silence. And it was only you and the salesman in the other room.
If anyone walked into the house in one of the most humble districts, they would believe it was a social experiment. A man tied up from the hands and toes has to follow a woman like a lost puppy each day.
From having breakfast, lunch, and dinner together, him being blindfolded while you took a shower and you playing games on your iPad while he took one too.
The silence was the excruciating part. He barely talked and when you tried to pry about him, it likely ended up with you furiously pulling his hair and leaving the room made a mess.
“I could be useful, ma’am,” he said, sitting straight at the table. “The least I can do in lockdown is to help you with banalities”
Out of his suit-tailored suit, he almost made you think about the word ‘domestic’. He was wearing a grey hoodie, black sweatpants, and white socks.
“The only thing I’m asking you to help me with, you cannot provide” you reply, serving him a cup of coffee.
“I don’t drink coffee” he politely declines de cup, and you roll your eyes.
“Really? You look like someone who needs a lot of caffeine” The playful tone came out of nowhere and it made you bite your tongue.
“And I wouldn’t take you as an addict for it” It’s the first time both of you actually speak and it’s odd. “Who would’ve thought?”
“Yeah, I like it very toasted with just a smidge of almond creamer” You hear him chuckle and it makes you smile. But you remember the reason why you are there.
You aren’t there to talk about coffee.
“So… How long had you been doing… your job” one of his hands was cuffed to the chair beside him, and with the free one, he was able to eat.
“Some years, five, maybe seven. But I’ve been in the organization for longer” You almost dropped your fork, surprised to hear he was actually answering.
You wouldn’t push it too far.
“Are the games really that terrible like Gi-hun said?” The man tilts his head.
Perhaps he was getting dementia and he was forgetting you had him captive in a random house. But he was willing to answer.
“They are. But that’s what they sign up for…”
“No. That’s how you and your peers have shaped the games” he makes a feigned pot, cleaning the corners of his mouth with a napkin. “We’ve already talked about this…”
“Listen asshole, I just need you to tell me where the fuck is that damn island” It’s obvious you were getting exasperated and he was enjoying it.
Wearing a sundress and sandals, messy hair, and barely traces of makeup, you looked lovely to his eyes. Almost impossible to imagine you could get angry so easily.
“If your friends were smarter, perhaps they would have already figured it out”
“You really rather die than accept you’re just their dog. Just a messenger who will be replaced once they notice you have mysteriously disappeared…”
Now was his turn to get angry. You could see the way he was tense.
“Not very different than you, ma’am. You were left behind to keep an eye on me. Just a little ragdoll to use”
You slap him so hard that even some birds peeking in the window fly away at the sound. The red tonality starts spreading across his pale cheek.
“Do it again” he blurts out and it boils your blood. He must’ve felt hard by your harsh action but you were enraged.
So you did again, harder this time.
His expression was indescribable. He seemed pleased and you hated it.
“Fuck you!” You yell exasperated by him.
“I told you once, this is pointless” You harshly grab his jaw and make him look up at your eyes. He has a playful smile and some of his hair falls scattered across his forehead.
“I will make you spit out every dirty little secret of yours. Even if it takes longer than needed”
He leans even closer and you literally feel his dry lips against yours but it doesn’t make you flicker.
No matter how wet the whole situation is making you feel.
“Why so quiet, doll?” he asks, grabbing your hip and moving his hand dangerously back and forward towards your ass.
“What a shame you are not complying. If you did, you’d had me begging for you to fuck me hard”
He gulped shocked, you won.
Your free hair, the view of your cleavage, the proximity to your lips, and the words that spilled out of your mouth were driving him crazy.
“You’d love it, right? I can tell no one has fucked you good enough. That’s the real shame, sweetheart” You want to ignore the way you feel you are throbbing, as well as the sight of his tightening pants. “No need, I can get wild by myself”
“Really? You like to get messy in the sheets?” You nod, feeling bold and sassy, gently touching his inner thighs and abandoning the touch once you’re inches away from feeling his hard cock.
“Yes, sir. I love watching my own reflection, gasping and moaning while my fingers slip in and out of my cunt and I feel so close to squirting”
“Fuck…” he curses in Korean a trail of words, which makes you smile as you leave.
The salesman was once very poor, he was a guard in the games, became head of them, and then jumped to be the recruiter.
He killed his father and became the most isolated man to protect his and the organization’s identity.
At least that’s what he revealed when you forced him to get drunk. You also got drunk to set it equal but both of you remembered everything. The salesman even earned the right to be out of the handcuffs. Which resulted odd to you, because he hadn’t tried anything to kill you or escape.
It also made you wonder if he was feeling weird things like you.
Sat on the balcony at midnight during a sudden heat wave, watching the skyline of Seoul at a fair distance, it almost felt like a simulation. Where he wasn’t your captive, he was a good man and both of you were having a date. As ridiculous as it sounded.
“Okay. I get you’ve had enough in life, but don’t you want to actually live? To wander and experience tranquility. You’re getting old and time will pass” you unexpectedly said, even taking yourself aback.
“I chose this life some time ago. It’s what I get…” you wanted to take his hands and tell him he had a chance.
But he was just the salesman.
“I would like to beg you to think twice. To question yourself if you want to die as their… dog, or start living. But you won’t listen, you are missing the warmth of life… and love”
You didn’t mean to say all that. But you were also drunk. And that’s what you honestly thought about him.
And that was two days ago.
The most important phone in the house rang. And you literally jumped out of the bathtub to pick up the call.
In a drenched dress that was supposed to be your outfit of the day and hair tangled up in a towel, you get towards the phone, ignoring the salesman seated steps away.
“Hello?…” you are greeted by a distorted voice but soon you know it’s Jun-ho.
“…y/n!… Hope you’re alright, Have you found out anything?” You sigh, already answering the man.
“No. Tiny details of the man but nothing that would actually lead to the island” you almost whisper, hoping the salesman won’t hear you.
“Not much luck here either. A storm will impact tonight. And we lost contact with Gi-hun”
“WHAT?” You nearly scream, the salesman looks up at you with curiosity and you continued the call, opting to whisper if needed. “Yes, the microphone is gone”
“For fuck’s sake…”
“If nothing can be done. We will return tonight, but I have high hopes” he says.
“I’m hopeful too. I will try again with the salesman, Jun-ho” The call was getting harder to understand, you could barely hear the man on the other side. You only hear one thing.
“If needed, kill him, y/n” he hangs up and it leaves you made a mess.
You look back, finding him charming while trying to flip the page of a crossword book.
You couldn’t kill the salesman.
Developing feelings for the man who tricked your brother into joining the games, was almost insane.
You sobbed without care sitting on the couch facing the bed, feeling like you were dancing on your brother’s grave. Like you were failing Gi-hun, Jun-ho, and all the crew. Your friends…
But your salesman was interesting, every conversation with him made you forget about everything as simple as it could be. You liked his big hands and his silly smile whenever you tried to outsmart him.
You are so screwed.
He stared at you sobbing with your hands covering your face. And something made him feel sorry. He hadn’t realized that spending a week with you made him remember a lot of things about humanity.
He knew you were stressed out and scared of losing your friends. He never had friends or girlfriends to rely on, because he thought he didn’t need them. He was better off alone, feeling powerful and condescending for finally being on the other side of the coin.
But what was life without love?
“Let’s play a game,” he says.
“Not in the mood for your bullshit” when you turn to look at him, he is pointing at the open balcony and the view of the city.
“We’ll play mimic. I will tell you the location of the island and you only have three guesses” You roll your eyes. “You can say random shit to confuse us”
“You have my word. This is your only chance…”
“And if you win?” He shrugs. “We can talk about that later”
He would make sure you won.
“Three guesses…” You nod at him, noticing he wasn’t being playful and cocky as usual. He was calm and almost looked innocent.
Slowly, he points at the painting above his head; it’s the sea.
“In the sea, yes, we know the island is on the sea, genius” he smiles, then points at the painting again. This time, his fingers trail downwards, trying to reach one of the edges; to your left.
His hair hadn’t grown in the slightest, but out of his suit, with ordinary clothes and no way to tame his hair, your salesman looked divine. With an adorable expression, hoping to make you understand.
You loved him.
“You are not paying attention” you huff in annoyance.
He trails his fingers down the painting and then points at the decoration of candles at the little table between you two.
His fingers touch each candle, making you follow the pattern of a simulated bridge.
“Dammit, Couldn’t you be less specific? I don’t understand shit…” he sighs, shifting on his seat.
“One more guess…” you’re not sure if you believe him. He could either keep making lies to shift your attention somewhere else. And you didn’t have the heart to call Jun-ho with uncertain hopes.
The salesman points at the painting one last time and you pay real attention. He had big hands and long fingers, fitting a pianist. They move downwards above the sea of dried oil paint. Then, he points at the skyline of the city and finally trails the candles forming a bridge.
Inthe sea, left, south, bridge and the city.
Your eyes snap open.
In the sea, towards left and south, with a bridge that connects to the city.
“THE ISLAND IS LOCATED SOUTHWEST, ALIGNED WITH THE PIER OF THE CITY!” you scream in happiness and the salesman nods in silence, you cheer, typing the message and sending it to Jun-ho “OH MY GOD, I LOVE YOU”
You were about to hug him, but you stopped. Quickly, you stand up but you feel his hand pull you down again.
“Say it again…” his voice sounded deep and it made you feel even more embarrassed after all.
“I’m sorry. I hate to admit it, but I’m human. We’ve spent so much time together that…” Feeling completely helpless and embarrassed you look away. But his touch is there again, caressing your thigh. This time his touch is delicate, unlike the first days where he would seek control and indulge pain even in the slightest.
“I feel things too” he admits, shocking you.
“You feel things?”
“By telling you where the island is, your friends can succeed and with luck, everything will be over. You’ll have avenged your brother and helped future people who could’ve died in the games. The government would step in and I would be charged, you’ll likely get deported or fined even when you did the right thing” You let him speak and trace random patterns in the skin of your thigh because it felt right. “I am no good and I shouldn’t say anything else, but if you’d have me… I would gladly run away with you”
Your heart makes your cheeks bloom a beautiful color of blush. It was wrong, not part of the plan, out of your mind. But it felt right, an inevitable consequence.
You literally jump to kiss him. And in an amazing turn of events, the salesman transformed into the most submissive man.
His hands were almost trembling while they held you.
He couldn’t believe it. All the efforts he put into being loyal to the island that gave him the chance to become someone, were over the floors. All he knows is that when he looked at your bright eyes, he wanted it to be his sight forever. Your company matches him perfectly, you are the type of woman he didn’t know he craved.
“We might need to go to therapy and this is a terrible idea but I’ll pretend you’re worth it,” you say in his lips, biting his lower lip gently.
He smiles. Unsure if he’s making the right decision but confident that he’s choosing the right partner. The salesman believes he doesn’t deserve a second option. He hated himself for a variety of reasons. But he couldn’t comprehend the way you made him feel. It was his obsessive nature what had been completely shattered by your arrival. Transforming into something else, unknown and prone to make him addicted.
He hated vulnerability, but he was welcoming it with open arms for you.
“I don’t want to ever let you go”
“Don’t you dare, darling” you say, moving to straddle him and kiss him a little more.

BL 2024 Review
It’s been another year of BL. I wrote a review of 2023 and 2022, and I find myself struggling to write about this year. I feel like I had some incredible projects that I connected with this year, but I also found myself far more bored and frustrated with certain things than I was expecting. The most disheartening thing this year for me was the drop off in the number of quality Korean productions, and the end of my patience with Thai BL squandering viewer time and attention. Let’s get into some of the big ideas.
Japan is Still Here
Last year I commented that a third of all Japanese BL I had ever watched came out in 2023. We got even more this year, and we had longer runtimes! This is good for the kind of viewer I am. I find that I enjoy Japanese shows more often than any other BL-producing country, and they held down the bulk of my watching for the year.
Tumblr media
This year I was blessed with two shows tackling a similar premise (actors falling for each other as they film a BL) and they were both good! I loved I Became The Main Role of a BL Drama so much, and we’re getting a sequel in 2025! I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy a moodier take on this premise when At 25:00 in Akasaka showed up, but I ended up enjoying that, too!
Tumblr media
I properly watched Ossan’s Love and The Novelist at the start of this year, and I’m so glad I did, because goddamn did I enjoy Ossan’s Love Returns.
Tumblr media
I also remain thankful for Tadaima Okaeri and Twilight Out of Focus for giving us worthwhile BL anime.
Tumblr media
I'm thankful for Perfect Propose for giving me a man in his mid-20s leaving his horrible job after getting fed and jerked off by an old friend.
Tumblr media
I'm thankful for Takara no Vidro for unpacking obsession in a relationship and solving it with healthy communication.
Tumblr media
Finally, I'm thankful for Love is Like a Poison for blending a legal drama with a BL so effortlessly, and making it such a fun ride. I love that Shiba Ryoma can't fight for shit and was so down bad for his man.
The Cross-Cultural Adaptations Brought Out Great Discussion
Tumblr media
I was glad we got Cherry Magic Thailand and My Love Mix Up Thailand this year in the order in which we got them. It was useful because they both came from GMMTV, and I had opposite reactions to both. I loved what they did with Cherry Magic, and stand by what I said on the podcast that I think it’s the best version of Cherry Magic (even if the anime is my favorite). This was useful, because I was really put off by the attempt at My Love Mix Up, and think they got a lot wrong. I’m glad the good show came first so I didn’t feel like I was being a Japanese version stan.
Tumblr media
Adapting from danmei, I really wanted to like My Stand In, but bounced off the show not taking the horror of Joe’s situation seriously. Moreover, I think the commerce of the BL pair required them to soften and redeem Up’s character in a way that felt disingenuous for me. I wanted that man to be unhinged and far more toxic than they portrayed him. If this is the trend, I’d rather Thai teams invested in BL pair commerce avoid toxic danmei in the future.
Tumblr media
In Taiwan, I was so impressed with Unknown. Despite the missteps on the sexual turn, that was one of the most engaging dramas we had within the genre this year. I was impressed at how seriously they took their family dynamics. That being said, Meet Me at the Blossom didn’t land for me. I would very much like to see a wuxia BL that hits for me without the dubious and non-consensual bits.
Tumblr media
Over in Japan, I don’t think I’m enjoying Our Youth that much, and I wonder about whether certain aspects of the source material didn’t translate properly with some of the changes I’ve seen mentioned by viewers. It’s been a difficult experience, because I loved the scene of Minase fleeing Hirukawa’s room, but the show has really lost its emotional core for me.
Tumblr media
However, I actually really enjoyed the Japanese version of Love in the Air, and think MeMindY timed this well with The Boy Next World starting right as the last episode of Love in the Air Japan finishes. It was clear to me that the Thai team was involved in the adaptation, and that the makers of the Japanese version loved LITA. I think both versions bring out something noteworthy in the characters, and I hope that the show is successful so we get more work from MeMindY as a result of the connections made here, because it’s clear that the money situation in Thailand might not be so hot right now.
Thai and Korean Money Must Be Drying Up
Tumblr media
We’ve been wondering when the BL peak would hit and the decline would begin, and I think we’re starting to see some of those changes. I worry about how little we got from Korea this year, despite three incredible showings from Love for Love’s Sake, Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo, and Love in the Big City. Beyond those three, I don’t really feel like anyone missed out that much on the other offerings (maybe Time of Fever, but I have qualms with that show).
Tumblr media
Beyond that, I remain worried about how much talent has consolidated at GMMTV. It’s a worrisome sign that they continue to gobble up all of the talent. Regardless of personal tastes for a particular brand of BGP (business gay performance), it’s pretty bad for all of us when one corporation is the only one making money on boys kissing each other (@respectthepetty).
Tumblr media
Despite how much Thai BL I dropped, I did genuinely enjoy the relationship and friendship dynamics of Cooking Crush, Knock Knock Boys, Love Sea, and The Trainee.
The Gay Things I Loved
Enough musing. Let’s just talk about other things that I loved. This is the section where I beg you to watch the gay things that matter to me, and not just the boys whose IG reels get reposted here.
Tumblr media
I absolutely loved the entire experience of the Love in the Big City book club. When @lurkingshan pitched the idea, I had no idea how many people would earnestly participate, that Anton Hur would share his time with us, or that the show would actually be so good. LITBC was so good that conservative Koreans protested its airing. I loved everything we did this year around that book and show, and wanna say thanks again to everyone who engaged with us.
Tumblr media
I also adored Marahuyo Project. I love that ANIMA Studios didn’t end after Like in the Movies. JP Habac came back with a banger. That show said it was LGBTQIA+ and it meant it with its whole heart. I really loved this show as a true examination of the evolving landscape of youth queerness in the modern era more than anything else I watched this year. Go watch it.
Tumblr media
I did not expect a show about a reformed misogynist to be my favorite show of the year, but here I am still begging all of you to watch Don’t Care For An Old Man’s Underwear! (@isaksbestpillow)This show made me cry every single week because of how good every moment hit. I have rarely experienced such an immense feeling of compassion as I received from this show.
Tumblr media
In 2022, we watched She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat, and we wondered if NHK would come back and finish what they started, and goddamn did they deliver. I think about Nomoto and Kasuga about as much as I think about Shiro and Kenji (What Did You Eat Yesterday?) now, and if Japan doesn’t figure out a way for both of those couples to meet, I will be forever disappointed. Go watch it. (@furritsubs)
Tumblr media
Finally, I will be forever thinking about the confession through the wall in Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo, how they intercut the youth and adult sex, and the way Dohoe apologized to Hyeonho. Hwang Da Seul finally got all of the pieces right here. She loves to see a couple get back together after a big separation, and she succeeded here. This show earned its youth romance, and earned its reunion. She understands how important it is for gay people to stop trapping each other. We threw that cross in the trash, and cried because of Yahoo answers. We all won.
My Tastes are Changing
Last year I engaged with about 99 productions. This year it’s under 75 with 26 that I didn’t finish. I hesitate to say that the genre is getting worse, when I feel like things are where they’ve been for a long time. However, it’s clear that I’m changing and am less interested in seeing what I deem to be weak attempts at familiar storytelling tropes.
Tumblr media
I think what I’ve noticed the most about my tastes changing is that it’s making me write less. The fandom has contracted dramatically on Tumblr, and I find myself growing distant from the predominant reactions. With there being less people to vibe with, I’ve been reacting less in real time. Despite that, I hope to continue posting round ups with my BL blurbs and @the-conversation-pod.
Tumblr media
All in all, 2024 is a difficult year for me. I think I enjoyed BL less overall, but the things I did enjoy I enjoyed more than previous years. It’s a difficult space for me to navigate, because I think this is actually what I wanted. I will continue to appreciate that the BL genre enables the funding for the big gay projects that I love. So, even if I think GMMTV going literally all-in on BL is going to lead to a ton of garbage, I still remain hopeful that the homos with something interesting to say can make the projects they want.

The war unleashed by Russia almost three years ago in Ukraine is rightly recognized as one of the great crimes of the twenty-first century. Understandably, little attention has been paid so far to the impact the conflict is having on Ukraine’s international image. And yet amid the trauma and horror of Russia’s invasion, there are growing signs that the unprecedented media spotlight on Ukraine since 2022 is gradually helping to transform global perceptions of the country. As a result, Ukraine is now finally emerging from a prolonged period of international obscurity that has hindered the country’s progress for centuries.
International ignorance of Ukraine has been a feature since long before the country regained independence in 1991. Following the Soviet collapse, little was done to address this lack of outside awareness or strengthen Ukraine’s national brand in the global arena. This low profile helped set the stage for Russia’s disinformation efforts, with foreign audiences often prepared to believe all manner of outlandish lies about a country that was otherwise unknown to them. Thanks to the recent media focus on Ukraine, Kremlin propagandists are now finding that their distortions are not so readily accepted. This is an ongoing process, but it is already possible to identify a number of important facts about Ukraine that have taken root in the international consciousness since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
1. Ukraine is not Russia
The fact that Ukraine is not Russia may seem insultingly obvious when viewed from a Ukrainian perspective, but in reality this was the fundamental image problem facing the country in 2022. Indeed, it is no coincidence that on the eve of the full-scale invasion, Vladimir Putin published an entire essay denying the legitimacy of a separate Ukrainian state on the grounds that Ukrainians are actually Russians (“one people’).
Putin did not invent this narrative of Ukraine denial himself. His predecessors have been insisting that Ukraine is an inalienable part of Russia since at least the eighteenth century, and have ruthlessly manipulated the historical record to support their arguments. Throughout the Tsarist and Soviet eras, anyone attempting to counter this Great Russian narrative or highlight Ukraine’s long statehood struggle was treated as a dangerous heretic subject to the harshest of punishments.
For generations, Russia was able to impose its imperial propaganda on international audiences, with Ukrainians silenced and Ukraine misleadingly portrayed as an intrinsic part of Russia’s own historical heartlands. It was therefore understandable that when an independent Ukraine appeared on the map in 1991, many had trouble distinguishing it from Russia. This created much confusion and went some way to legitimizing subsequent Russian attempts to reassert its authority over Ukraine.
The full-scale invasion has changed all that. Since February 2022, international perceptions of the relationship between Russia and Ukraine have undergone a radical transformation as global audiences have witnessed the ferocity of the Russian attack and the determination of Ukraine’s national defense. The war unleashed by Vladimir Putin has killed hundreds of thousands and shattered millions of lives; it has also destroyed the myth of Russians and Ukrainians as “one people.” As the invasion approaches the three-year mark, it is now safe to say that anyone who continues to insist on the indivisibility of Russia and Ukraine is either acting in bad faith, or is so stunningly ignorant that their opinion can be disregarded.
2. Ukraine is huge
Prewar Ukraine’s low international profile encouraged many to imagine the country as an obscure and irrelevant statelet whose fate mattered little to the wider world. Meanwhile, very few people seemed to appreciate that Ukraine was in fact the largest country wholly in Europe. That is no longer the case. Throughout the past three years, the map of Ukraine has featured relentlessly in the international press. Even casual observers have grown familiar with the outline of the country, and cannot have failed to notice how large it looms over its European neighbors.
Media coverage of battlefield developments has also helped to underline the sheer size of Ukraine. Despite regular war reports of major offensives and record advances, the overall picture of the front lines has changed little since the first year of the war, underlining the comparative vastness of Ukraine. While Ukraine may still appear small when compared to Russia, it is a huge country by European standards. Growing awareness of this fact is helping to shape perceptions of Ukraine’s geopolitical significance.
3. Ukraine is an agricultural superpower
Prior to 2022, Ukraine was probably best known to many around the world as the site of the Chornobyl disaster. Associations with the world’s worst nuclear accident were particularly unfortunate as Ukraine is anything but a radioactive wasteland. In reality, the country’s real claim to fame is as the breadbasket of Europe. Ukraine’s fabled black soil is among the most fertile land in the entire world, making much of the country a giant garden of agrarian abundance.
Since 2022, Russia’s invasion has helped educate international audiences about Ukraine’s crucial role in global food security. Extensive media coverage of Russia’s Black Sea naval blockade has underlined the importance of Ukrainian agricultural exports, with disruption caused by Moscow’s interference leading to famine fears in Africa and price hikes on basic foodstuffs throughout the West. Growing awareness of Ukraine’s status as an agricultural superpower has undermined Kremlin efforts to portray the invasion as a strictly local affair, and has mobilized international opposition to the war.
4. Ukraine is an innovation hub
For decades, international perceptions of Ukraine were plagued by lazy cliches depicting the country as a terminally corrupt backwater on the vodka-soaked fringes of Eastern Europe. These deeply unflattering caricatures of Ukrainian stagnation were always misleading. They are now also hopelessly outdated. Since 2022, Ukraine has demonstrated that it is a sophisticated high tech nation capable of more than holding its own in the most technologically advanced war the world has ever seen. Ukraine’s ability to develop, deploy, and update its own domestically-produced weapons systems on an almost daily basis has done much to debunk the negative stereotypes of old and establish the country’s reputation as a leading innovation hub.
Ukrainian defense tech companies have been responsible for a string of particularly innovative battlefield solutions that have caught the eye of global defense industry giants and helped Ukraine even up the odds against the country’s far larger and wealthier enemy. For example, ground-breaking Ukrainian marine drones have turned the tide in the Battle of the Black Sea and forced Russia’s entire fleet to retreat from Crimea, while Ukrainian long-range drones routinely strike targets deep inside Russia. As a result, “Made in Ukraine” is now recognized as a stamp of quality throughout the international security sector. This image transformation is already attracting international investors and will shape Ukraine’s economic development for decades to come, with the country’s defense industry and broader tech sector set to be in high demand.
5. Ukraine is united
The full-scale invasion has seriously undermined longstanding Russian efforts to portray Ukraine as a country irrevocably split along geographical and ideological lines. The narrative of a divided Ukraine has been a mainstay of Kremlin propaganda since the Soviet era, and has been central to the disinformation that has accompanied the escalating Russian aggression of the past two decades. For many years, this crude oversimplification of Ukraine’s regional complexities proved superficially persuasive among international audiences, but it has been decisively debunked by Ukraine’s united response to Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Ukrainians across the country have overwhelmingly rallied in opposition to the invading Russians, with residents in supposedly “pro-Russian” cities such as Odesa and Kharkiv proving no less determined to defend themselves and their homes. This is not to say that regional diversity is no longer a feature in today’s Ukraine, of course. On the contrary, Ukraine remains just as subject to regional differences as any other large European nation. However, the Russian invasion has shattered the myth of a terminally divided Ukraine and proved beyond any reasonable doubt that the vast majority of Ukrainians bitterly oppose the idea of a Russian reunion.

The Getty Museum Return Ancient Bronze Head to Turkey
A life-sized bronze head of a young man has been removed from view by the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and will be returned to Turkey after the institution learned it was illegally excavated.
The head had been in the antiquities collection at the Getty Villa Museum since it was acquired in 1971. But the museum said it had received new information from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in New York indicating it had been illegally excavated.
The California museum did not reveal what new information had come to light about the excavation, and officials in New York did not yet respond to a request for information. The head has been removed from view until it can be handed over to Turkish officials.
“In light of new information recently provided by Matthew Bogdanos and the Antiquities Trafficking Unit of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office indicating the illegal excavation of this bronze head, we agreed that the object needed to be returned to Türkiye,” museum director Timothy Potts said in a statement.
The district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the details of its investigation.
The Getty Museum said that its policies are to return objects to the country of their origin or modern discovery when reliable information indicates they were stolen or illegally excavated. In 2022, the museum returned a cache of artworks to Italy after learning that they were linked to disgraced antiquities dealer Gianfranco Becchina.
The bronze head dates to somewhere between 100 B.C.E and 100 C.E. and is a separately cast component of a life-size figure, detached from the body at the upper neck. The eyes were once inlaid with an unknown material that was not preserved. Researchers have not yet identified the body of the figure. The subject of the figure also remains elusive as it was fabricated in a “highly idealized” style and has not been matched to a member of an imperial family or other named individual, the museum said, although an inscribed alpha (“A”) is visible on the interior of the neck at the bottom rear edge.
Some scholars have associated the bronze head with the archaeological site of Bubon, in the Burdur province of southwestern Turkey. Bubon was subjected to illicit excavations in the late 1960s.
Potts added that by returning the head to Turkey, the museum seeks to continue building a constructive relationship with the Turkish Ministry of Culture archaeological colleagues in the country.
In total, the Manhattan District Attorney’s antiquities trafficking unit has recovered more than 4,500 antiquities stolen from 30 countries with a value in excess of $410 million since it was launched in 2017.

We all watched it. This isn’t a FAFO couple of years. He has real potential to fucking us all over for years later and real people will be affected for years to come.
It is not unknown that facsism runs rampant in this country. I was going to counter protests all throughout my 20s in New England. We all know they got louder when they had a voice in the system. In my opinion, they have gotten louder than before in the last year. It’s incredibly dire that we reach out to one another. This is not a left vs right issue. This will always be a US citizen issue and we need to put up the blockades or we will end up repeating history in some fashion that we shouldn’t be.
Reach out across lines. Don’t let agendas or the news segregate us. This is a battle that we need to do together.
Sources: a few. The opinion article was good. I happened to like Melania’s outfit last night but everything else was on the mark. Does include video. I watched the whole thing though, you should too.
Added a Fox News article to show massive marketing clean up being done. The bit at the end to discredit AOC is normal but the writing style is very much a press clean up job. Things like this you can’t take verbatim.
There is a massive need to clean this up. Trump cannot be running around with another extremist (like what happened in 2022 with Nick Fuentes). The marketing team and press clean up crew will fight hard to blame this on Elon just being awkward or telling people on the right that Liberals are all accepting until you are rich and are on the spectrum. What they won’t tell you though is that Elon has been sending money to the extremist party in Germany that has similar views. They won’t tell you that Elon has been meeting with famous extremists and buddying up to them on X. They won’t tell you that he’s been sharing Icons from extremists like Pepe the Frog for years. They won’t tell you what his likes and retweets look like. Elon isn’t just suddenly showing this. This has been quite a few years worth of issues. And don’t get me started on his view of having kids. His reasoning to have so many, as he has been quoted straight from the mouth to say, is that he believes the world will crumble without his kids. Pro-Natalist. He’s not having kids because he loves them- in fact he disowned one and doesn’t talk to the rest. The baby got lucky this year for marketing to help him look more fatherly in an age against healthcare CEO’s.
We are all being marketed too. Don’t let them sway your gut judgement on this. And don’t let them come between us. We are the greatest army. They want us separated.

July 2, 2022
tyler laughs at luke as he nearly trips, sitting in the chair in their favorite little diner that only the two of them went to. it officially was a month in of summer and all four hughes siblings were finally reunited after very hectic schedules of hockey practice, games, recording music and concerts.
while the two of them decided to go out for breakfast with each other, everyone else stayed back at the lake house to plan what they would all be doing the days that they would be there.
"was it really a good idea to leave mat at home with our parents and the others?" luke questioned the blonde sitting in front of him as he glanced over the menu placed on the table, both of them already knowing what they would be ordering.
tyler bites her lip as she glances over at her phone laying face down on the table, "not really, but i think he can survive an hour or two without me there to play peacemaker."
"well, i don't think he's a bad guy." the youngest hughes boy shrugged his shoulder, "i mean, the two of you have been together for almost two years. jack can't hold a grudge for too long."
"are you sure about that? 'cause i'm pretty sure he is still pissed off about that stuffed elephant that quinn and i accidentally ripped the trunk off of a whole ten years ago."
"luke! tyler! how are my two favorite people?!" Sally, the owner of the small diner, grins widely at the brother and sister as she walked over to their table, "it's always a pleasure to have the two of you here when you guys come home!"
"hi, sally!" the blonde stands up to wrap the older woman into a hug before sitting back down, "how have you and rodger been?"
"we've been good, sweetheart. we've been keeping track of the two of you and your careers." sally smiles at them, her notepad in her hand, "alright, the same as always? or have you both finally decided to try something other than those pancakes you always get?"
"the same as always, please."
"coming right up, sweethearts! and don't be strangers, come back before you guys get back to your lives and leave this little place." sally tells them before looking down at tyler, "and you, missy, bring that handsome boyfriend of yours around to meet me."
tyler giggles, "i promise."
Tumblr media
"i'm paying, luke!"
"i don't think so. quinn would have my head if i made you pay for both of our food. i'm paying and that's --,"
"excuse me. are you tyler?"
both tyler and luke turn around at the sound of the unfamiliar voice, looking over at the tall man and blonde woman standing behind them with warm smiles on their faces.
"um, that depends on who's asking." the country singer chuckled awkwardly as she looked between the two people she had never seen before, rolling her eyes slightly as luke subconsciously stepped in front of her to hide her from the strangers.
"oh, honey." the lady tilts her head, looking at the blonde with watery eyes as a wobbly smile, "i'm carissa and this is brandon. we're your parents."
Tumblr media
"it was supposed to be a closed adoption. they weren't even supposed to be able to find you." ellen shakes her head as she looks at her eldest child.
tyler and luke had left the diner after the run in with her 'birth parents' and they had come straight back to the lake house instead of doing what else they had left the house to do so that the two could tell their parents what had happened.
jim sighs loudly, crossing his arms over his chest. "how do we even know these are actually her birth parents? they could just be two crazy ass people who looked up the first famous blonde they could try and get money out of. i mean, she's doing well for herself in nashville and besides, it's been twenty-six years since they gave her up. why come looking now?"
"did they at least say what they wanted?" mat sits next to his girlfriend, a hand rubbing soft circles in her back as it was just tyler, her parents, quinn and mat in the kitchen, jack and luke taking everyone else out on the boat to give them some privacy to talk.
"no." tyler shakes her head, "they didn't make it past the 'we're your parents' part. luke pulled me out of the diner before i could ask them what they wanted."
"this is complete bullshit." quinn shakes his head, his jaw clenching in anger just as the doorbell went off, "i'll get it."
"should we call the adoption agency and see how they tracked us down?" ellen looks over at her husband just as quinn comes back in the kitchen.
"how about we ask them ourselves." quinn says, crossing his arms over his chest as the same people from the diner came in behind him.
"what the hell? how did you know where we were staying?"
brandon shrugged, "i'm a private detective. i got some of my people to help me look into it."
"isn't that some kind of violation of the adoption?" mat questioned as his hand moved from tyler's back to her bare thigh.
"and you are?" carissa turns to the islanders player.
"mat." the boy sends her a sarcastic smile, "the boyfriend."
"what is it the two of you want?" jim looks between the couple claiming to be his daughter's birth parents.
"we want to get to know our daughter." carissa smiles warmly as everyone in the kitchen.
"you want to get to know me?" tyler stands up from her seat, making sure to grab her phone as she did.
"yes, sweetheart. we want to know all about you."
"yeah, you want to know what i want?" tyler starts to walk out of the kitchen, "i want a fucking dna test!"
Tumblr media
July 9, 2023
a week had come and gone by time they got the dna test back, and everyone -- including brandon and carissa -- were in the hughes lake house waiting to hear the results.
tyler sat nervously next to her boyfriend, playing with mat's hand out of nervousness which was a habit she's had for as long as she could remember.
"alright, are we ready?" jim holds the envelope tightly in his hand as he looks around the room at everyone.
everyone staying in the lake house nod along with brandon and carissa, all of the boys there for the summer having stayed to be there for tyler as support just like she was for all of them.
"okay." the male lets out a heavy sigh as he opened the large envelope and pulling out the papers, letting his eyes read over the words before he tells everyone what they say.
"well? dad." jack's leg shakes in anticipation as they all look at him.
"well, ty, they are your biological parents." jim tells his eldest child, who instantly crumbles in her boyfriend's arms.
"hey, shh. it's okay, baby." mat rubs her back as she sobs loudly into his chest. "come on, let's go get some air."
the blonde stands up and walks out of the lake house, mat following behind her as everyone sat in a stunned silence.
"what do the two of you want with tyler?" quinn turns to the biological parents of his older sister, a scowl on his face, "hum? the money she makes for herself? a chance to be in her spotlight because she's moving up in the world? what was your exact purpose of hunting her down?"
"quinn." ellen shakes her head at her oldest son
"no, i would love to know the answer to that as well." jim crosses his arms as he looks over at the two adults.
"we just want to be a part of our daughter's life." brandon says, "so that she can get to know her other siblings."
"no." tyler's voice catches their attention as she and mat come back into the lake house, "no, just because a piece of paper says that i'm your daughter, doesn't make that true. "they--," she points between ellen and jim, "--are my mom and dad. and the three of them--," she moves her finger to point to luke, jack and quinn. "--are my brothers."
"tyler--,"
she cuts carissa off, "twenty-six years, i have been waiting for one of you to come looking for me, to acknowledge that i existed. i didn't even have a fucking name when the two of you threw me away like i didn't matter! the two of them named me! they raised me! they put me through school! for twenty-six years, they have been mom and dad! jim taught me how to change my own tires, jim taught me not to let a man bring me down! jim is my dad! ellen, she taught me how to be a strong ass woman on my own! ellen taught me everything i needed to know about being a woman! they taught me what a mother and a father should be like!”
"the two of them put me through school! they were at every cheer event, they were there for every milestone in my life! every band concert, they were there cheering me on! quinn, luke and jack? the three of them let me know every single damn day, how much they love that their mother and father adopted me, even though i'm older than the three of them! quinn, he held my hand when i learned how to ice skate for the very first time! he was there to hold my hand when i thought that the guy i was with before mat was going to be my forever! luke, he's the youngest out of the four of us and he was there to cheer me up when i felt like i was nothing! jack, he's always been there to call me out on my bullshit, but he's also the one that gets into the bullshit with me! they are my brothers! the five of them, are my family!"
"and without them, i would not be where i am today. i would not have the opportunities that i've had without any of them! i wouldn't have all of these amazing, wonderful, caring people in my life if it wasn't for them." tyler blinks as more tears cause her vision to go blurry as she stands next to mat, grabbing his hand.
"i have the life you could only dream about having, and it is because of them! so, no, i'm not your daughter. she died a long time ago. so get the hell out of my lake house and don't come back!."
everyone sits in silence, both brandon and carissa looking at the blonde in disbelief.
"you heard her." quinn stands up to move next to the other side of his sister, "get the hell out and don't come back."
after the two are pulling out of the driveway, tyler is pulled into a hug by her brothers and their parents.
"we're proud of you, tyler noelle." ellen kisses her daughter on the forehead, a warm smile on her face and tears in her eyes.
"so proud." jim wipes her tears away as he kisses her on the top of her head.
"i love you, guys."
"we love you, too."

Teens and kids with long COVID are showing surprising new symptoms - Published Aug 21, 2024
Rose Lehane Tureen is one busy teenager.
The 16-year-old is class president, an Irish step dance champion, singer, cross-country runner and straight-A student at her high school in Maine.
Her accomplishments belie the reality that she suffers from a debilitating headache that has lasted for more than four years, one of the several long COVID symptoms she's endured since an infection in March 2020.
Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.
At the beginning of her illness, Rose went to the emergency room half a dozen times and was hospitalized twice with dizziness and blinding head pain. She also had red and swollen fingers, toes and ears; peeling skin; joint pain; problems controlling her temperature and terrible dreams.
She lost years of her life to long COVID and is trying to make up for it.
“I had to decide if I wanted to wither away on the couch in the dark or push through and do things that made me happy,” she said. "I'm reclaiming what it's taken and trying to live my life."
Rose is one of the estimated 5.8 million children in the U.S. with long COVID, many of whom have not been diagnosed because doctors, parents and patients fail to recognize the constellation of symptoms, experts say. A new study funded by the National Institutes of Health aims to arm families with information, identifying the most common long COVID symptoms in school-aged children and teenagers.
“Children aren’t just little adults,” said Dr. Melissa Stockwell, the study's coauthor and division chief of child and adolescent health at Columbia University. The more providers understand how long COVID impacts people at different ages, the easier it will be to diagnose children and provide prompt care.
Long COVID symptoms in kids, teens The study included 5,300 younger school-aged children and teens from more than 60 healthcare facilities across the U.S. between March 2022 and December 2023.
Researchers found teenagers between 12 and 17 were more likely to report fatigue, pain and changes in taste and smell, whereas, younger schoolchildren between 6 and 11 were more likely to have difficulty focusing, sleep problems and stomach issues, according to the report published Wednesday in JAMA.
Long COVID symptoms affected almost every organ system, and most patients reported symptoms that affected more than one part of their body.
In the report, younger school children and teens commonly reported back or neck pain, headaches, lightheadedness or dizziness and trouble with memory or focus. The study authors were also surprised to find that shared symptoms among the younger children included phobias, specifically the fear of crowded or enclosed spaces, and refusal to go to school.
The symptoms that showed up in younger children were less likely to overlap with symptoms experienced by adults with long COVID. The authors said this underscored the importance of age-based research.
“The symptoms that make up the research index are not the only symptoms a child may have and they’re not the most severe, but they are most predictive in determining who may have long COVID,” said Dr. Rachel Gross, the study's lead author and associate professor of pediatrics and population health at New York University Grossman School of Medicine.
Rose could have benefited from this research in 2020. It took more than a year to find doctors who would take her cluster of symptoms seriously. She eventually found that team at Boston Children's Hospital.
“I went from running a junior Olympic qualifier to being unable to walk,” Rose said. “It was dramatic and confusing.”
Missing 'whole boat' of data Despite the new research, health experts say a great deal is still unknown about long COVID.
For example, most of the data from the study comes from patients who were infected with earlier COVID-19 variants, not the latest version of omicron, said Dr. Alexandra Yonts, a pediatric infectious disease specialist and director of the post-COVID program at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C.
The study suggests kids infected with omicron are less likely to develop long COVID, however, Yonts argues there isn't enough data to support that theory since omicron hasn't been on the scene long enough to allow for robust long COVID data.
"If we’re looking at kids that have been newly infected (and) what is their risk of becoming long COVID patients?" she said. "We’re missing that whole boat."
Authors of the JAMA study say their next research will be long COVID symptoms in children 5 and under. Yonts said the most urgent need for these patients is access to post-COVID clinics that specialize in identifying and treating lingering symptoms from a COVID-19 infection. She said these types of efforts are beginning to close down across the country due to a lack of funding and support.
"These are such complex patients," Yonts said. "It's hard to find a multidisciplinary team that can define those symptoms and support them."
That's why Rose, a California native, eventually moved with her family to southern Maine so they could be driving distance from Boston Children's Hospital, where she visits the long COVID clinic at least once a month. In addition to doctors at the hospital's specialized COVID clinic, she's seen nearly a dozen specialists including a sleep neurologist, acupuncturist, gastroenterologist, endocrinologist, rheumatologist and cardiologist, among others.
Rose is disheartened that post-COVID clinics are shutting down for patients like her, but not completely surprised. She sees the world moving on from the pandemic, but she's still in pain. She hopes the JAMA study brings renewed attention to the condition.
"There’s this illusion now that lockdown is over, that COVID is gone," she said. "It’s really, really difficult and invalidating for all the people with long COVID – especially children."
