Questions I have surrounding Milton Finch

(if anyone has answers please feel free to share)

1: How did the door only work for him?? We see the aforementioned painted door in his room, but the design is different and worn down. Is it even the same door? Idk

2: Monroe's mother: How did Milton meet her? If he had the ability to return to the real world and sire a child, why didn't he ever use that world-hopping ability to look for his family? Did he just assumed they all would have died? This is the biggest question for me; like how he came back, for what reason, and then why he abandoned both her and his son. How old was he even?

3: How could Monroe's mother have a magic paintbrush that she left to her son if Milton already had it in his kingdom? Were there two? Did he make her one of her own to make up for being an absent father?

4: Hell, he knew about his son, right? He seemed to know who he was. Why didn't you want to be in your child's life?? You gave him another paintbrush, more questions, and a half-hearted admittance to being a crap dad, then told him to leave where he'll never see him again.

5: (Throwaway Question) Would Dawn (before her death) or Edith ever find out about Monroe? Assuming theres DNA in this world, who's to say they couldn't trace the Finch relatives and reunite them. They could even have took Monroe in after his mom's death. Plus it would have been both curious, (now they know Milton didn't die) and therapeutic (having at least a piece of Milton back)

Its just plaguing my mind, I'm deeply obsessed with these games now unfortunately

I love the idea of Christopher and Monroe meeting later in life. Like a chance meeting where they happen to cross paths. I feel like it would go something like this:

Monroe: Wait, you’re not supposed to exist!

Christopher: Excuse me, your dad died when he was 11!

Monroe: That was just a misunderstanding.

Christopher: A MISUNDERSTANDING!!!!!

Milton, I do agree he ran away even though idk where to as he was on an island .

I know most people don't like word of god saying wroef and unfinished swan are connected but I personally like it

Like basically all of Unfinished Swan

Even though the story is very fantastical and unrealistic, I feel like it says a lot about Milton

He grew up and to me he wanted to be alone as the King never wanted subjects basically but he wanted to make something that would last forever

At some point, he realized he wanted a family, and iirc it is also because it is a kind of legacy in a way

The King (Milton) gets a wife (and takes forever to notice she is pregnant), and plans and plans, yet she leaves

The King falls into a depression.

His Wife gives birth to Monroe and raises him with love and when she died he went to find her swan painting that ended up leading him to The King

(This is 100% a story about family and legacy imo)

Monroe meets his dad and gets told a story, which includes The King saying he saw his funeral and all that was there was Monroe

Milton says he realizes that everything will not last forever and it if for the next person to build and create

Then he hands Monroe a paintbrush while saying that Monroe will be a better man than his father (or something similar)

Again I understand why some dont want it connected because of the fantastical elements but I see it more as what the level screens show

A story

It is just Unfinished Swan says so much about Milton

I would keep rambling, but idk if you read this as playing games blind without outside opinions is best

Adding more

Unfinished Swan says a lot about Milton as a character because he wanted to create something away from the "Family Curse"

Also, I know it is because the games were made years apart, but the childhood bedroom I take as the place her grew up in because he had only been in the Finch house for... 2 or 3 years

Monroe is also more cautious but lively than the rest of his family /hj /lh

Milton just wanted to make a mark on the world and by the end of his life basically realized things will change and can't be the same

Also probably realized stories will be forgotten

(Which side thought as the "curse" has been around for 500 years iirc then definitely some have been forgotten to the years of time)

The King's last line to Monroe will always be in my heart

The next generation will learn and grow from the last, and while some setbacks may occur we will get there in the end

have you ever played The Unfinished Swan (2012) the predecessor to WRoEF? Miltons room is an entire reference to it

I've heard of the Unfinished Swan and it's connection to WRoEF, even though I never played it myself. It looks pretty interesting, though.

Maybe I should look a bit deeper into it but right now my main thoughts is that I am Endlessly Amused by the Implied Narrative of having the relatively-grounded game that is about fantasy on some level but is generally constantly teetering on the line of straight-up confirming all of the 'supernatural' elements have simple, mundane explanations exist in the same universe as the game where a Magical World of Magical Paintings undeniably exists.

Like, the so-called Finch Family Curse is probably just a combination of generational trauma, unhealthy coping mechanisms turning into self-fulfilling prophecies, general bad luck and probably some sort of hereditary undiagnosed neurodivergency. And all the supposedly 'supernatural' stuff happening around the Finches is just food-poisoning-fueled hallucinations or ridiculous obviously false tell-tales, or just plain ol' delusions..... Except for Milton disappearing into the Magic Painting World. That one DID literally happened.

I don't think this discrepancy significantly harms the themes or emotional core of either work, but it is VERY FUNNY once you take the time to think about it.

This might sound silly but I like to think Milton ran away, imagine growing up in a household where tragedy struck so often it was normal. Imagine growing with the fear that you could die any moment and your family probably wouldn’t care. It’s very suffocating so instead of staying he left, he probably didn’t want his family looking for him so he left no note. Just a drawing showing where his mind was while leaving and started his life from there. I mean the wiki acknowledges Monroe as Christoper’s “real life” family and the creators did say the Unfinished Swan was Milton’s story so it’s a good theory in my opinion.

Walter!!! :3 (I cried...all three times I played his death. I feel so bad for him, my man has PTSD, my boy needs a hug, and some hot cocoa or something.)

Calvin :3 (My child, he is my child, my adopted child. Also cried watching his death. The devs did him so dirty with that achievement for playing his story again [Loop-de-loop-de-loop] like why 💀. For all of the people I see in those YouTube comments calling him an idiot, don't act like you weren't like him once during his age, I know because I have cameras waching you-😊📷)

Gus! (Underrated, I wish we knew more about him and had more character development for him ngl, some people straight up forget him, like noooooo)

Lewis (Fan fav, but also relatable, wish we could save him, but we can't :(...)

Barbara (Girlboss and very good sister)

Molly (Welp, she's literally me at 3 A.M--)

Edith (...Uhh...hi ur...uhmmmm...cool. I cried at her death...)

Gregory (Sad story, I cried. The thing is though is that since he was a baby, his personality wasn't fully developed, but he's still pookie, also my cousin has the same name as him :/)

What is ur fav What Remains of Edith Finch chracter and why?

Pretty generic answer but I'll have to choose Milton. My boy decided that he shall not participate in this family curse, disappeared, found himself a wife, had a son and then disappeared again. I'm a sucker for mysterious characters, even when having the context of Unfinished Swan, Milton is still so mysterious because Unfinished Swan is so much more metaphorical than WROEF! And he's interesting even when taking account the theory that there is no family curse but just intergenerational traumas, ignored mental illnesses and child negligence, because Milton would represent the archetype of the one who understands that there's something wrong and that he shall not partake in it but will not do anything to change it. It can be considered selfish to only save himself, but you cannot help someone swim if you're yourself drowning. And also, I almost love all the finch's equally and will gladly share my opinions on them♡

Milton finch/the king is so interesting to me istg. The fact Milton escaped the curse by going to his own reality/creaton, being the unfinished swan is such an interesting way to connect the games. Pretend this was a longer post, but have a redraw of a scene from wroef

You (WROEF Oc)

A/n: This was originally written as a vent piece for some stuff going on in my life right now-but I loved how it turned out at least so here it is-

The first few weeks were the worst.

That’s how Eliza remembered it, anyway. The first few weeks, when someone goes missing, were always the worst.

She still remembered every detail of that day, right down to the beaten up sneakers she’d been wearing. She remembered rushing towards the tower-carelessly letting her stupid cardboard birthday hat fly freely from her head. She wouldn’t need it-she never needed it. 

Sometimes she forgot it had been her birthday. That felt so trivial now..

Had it been her fault..? Had she just-not pushed hard enough..? She still wondered about that. If she hadn’t been at the party that night-could she have talked him out of whatever he had done..? Would-would he still be here if anything had been different..?

Hell. This was hell-this felt like some sort of perfect, Inescapable hell. And that wasn’t even the worst part.

The worst part was the waiting. 

During those first few days she had hope-maybe he’d change his mind, maybe he would come back. Maybe this was some big misunderstanding and he’d just needed a break..! ..But then the days turned to weeks. And the weeks turned to months.

And the months turned to almost 20 years now.

And the worst-the absolute worst-part of it was she still had hope. She still, somewhere deep inside her-hoped he was still out there, that one day he would finally come home. The other parts-though she felt guilty for even the idea of saying it-..hoped she’d hear he was dead in a ditch somewhere. It was nothing against him obviously, just-..at least she would have some kind of closure. But as it stood-..there was still nothing. Just this empty, reeling pit of the unknown that made her feel anxious, it made her feel empty.

And it wasn’t like she didn’t have friends anymore. She had her support system, she had wonderful friends and family whom she loved.

She felt so guilty for still being upset. Why should she be, she still had friends-! She still had a loving family..! It’s not like she was alone-! ..but sometimes it felt like it. It felt like a whole piece of the gang was just..gone, and never to be replaced. She wondered if the others still thought of him, or worried-or if they’d forgotten, if they just wanted to move on and for her to shut up about it and save them all the griping.

But for now-..all she could really do was wait. 

Eliza Krolik..the girl who waited.

”..Hey Milly…” Eliza’s hands softly ran across the interior of the old tower. It still felt so strange coming back here-it felt empty, like a castle without a king. 

“I brought you something today..! Something really cool I found-“ the artist gave a weak smile, fishing around for something in her cluttered satchel-she never really did bother to organize the many layers of art supplies and whatever trinkets she could stuff in there. Maybe she would someday, but-not today. Today was more important.

Today she’d found a heart shaped rock on the beach. ”I know, I know it’s not much but-“ she spoke to thin air-she knew there was no way in hell he’d hear her-..but it felt natural at this point. “It’s a Heart shaped rock..! How cool is that..!” 

Minutes of painful silenced passed-a joke with no answer, no laughter or reply.

“..Anyway..” she sighed, her face falling a bit. “..I hope..I hope you know out there that someone misses you, Milton. All of us do..! And I know you may not believe me-but they do. In their own ways..! ..and then there’s me-“ she gave a weak, untrue smile. “..The idiot sitting in your old tower, talking to thin air like you’ll actually say something back.”

After another round of uncomfortable silence-Eliza sighed, gently setting the rock down onto the floor in front of that old door painting. It had been the last thing he ever painted-a cryptic, concerning message left behind that never got explained-and likely never would at this rate. “..I love you, Milly..” she muttered as she slowly backed away-turning to leave through the window she’d clambered in through. “..Maybe someday..”

Maybe someday. That sounded like a good summary of how she felt.

Maybe someday, he’d come home. 

Maybe someday, there’d be some sort of answer-anything..

Maybe someday.
