I cannot wait to see Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken no matter the mixed reviews and numerous spoilers. I'm thinking of going this weekend to the cinema. This, is for a very important reason:
Chelsea Van Der Zee, is the reason. When I initially saw pictures of her, I was hyped to see how DreamWorks is going to poke fun at the live-action remakes. Because come on, production of this movie started 2 years after the announcement of the live-action Little Mermaid. BUT, there is another layer to the parody of her character that will fly over most people's heads: She's a Dutch mermaid. Her faux-Dutch last name is a proper sounding Dutch surname, it doesn't falls into the pitfalls of writing it as Vanderzee, and whilst on the nose it's a well-constructed surname. Like, the people who created her last name were aware of HOW our surnames were constructed and didn't end up creating a non-realistic surname that simply sounds Dutch like Gossip Girl did. I remember trying to playback a moment in the trailer several times, when Chelsea confronted Ruby about being a kraken in the trailer, she says a word at the end that I couldn't place and no matter how many times I rewinded it I didn't understood what she said. Until I came across the scripted version of the quote yesterday; “I know your secret. You're a kraken, hiding as a human. And soon, everyone will know the truth. Kusjes!” Kusjes is horribly butchered, but it's Dutch for 'kisses' and we actually do use that and XOXO, just like English speakers do so the usage of Dutch that I have seen so far is correct. Now, I have actually seen people speculate she's Dutch because of That's So Raven, but as a Dutch person myself I see it from a different angle: There's a phenomenon I like to call the 'Dutch Default'. Historically, the English had difficulties recognizing which Germanic speaking culture was which. You can even see this reflected in our English name, 'Dutch', when that's how the Germans refer to themselves, as the Deutsch. We calls ourselves Nederlanders in our tongue. Pennsylvanian Dutch? I was told the area was mostly Swedish. I can continue with examples. Whilst I noticed the UK has became a little better educated about the topic, this is still perpetuated by Americans to this day. When The Little Mermaid live action was announced, there were various people who actually confused us for the Danish. Some were harmless comments like calling the novel Dutch instead of a Danish novel. Others were not. When there were Danish people speaking on social media about how disappointed they were with how Disney treats one of their national symbols, there were hate comments from people defending The Little Mermaid, but various were directed at the Dutch because Americans were too lazy to even Google which culture they are hurling insults too. This, was all taking place during the production of Ruby Gillman. Now, how likely is it that Chelsea is a Dutch mermaid because of That's So Raven, and how likely do you think DreamWorks noticed Twitter and decided to use the Dutch Default as another layer to the parody of Chelsea's character? Because it's not like the entirety of Hollywood seems to be unaware of this phenomenon. The Umbrella Academy S2, actually has this scene with the Swedish brothers being called Dutch even though the characters were already told they were Swedish, and Five corrects them like, "No, they're Swedish." Paired with how Luther shouts at innocent Olga through the phone, it gives a perfect portrayal of how clueless Americans are about foreign cultures. There are people in Hollywood who do notice how little Americans know about other cultures and will harass innocent people on false misconceptions. For DreamWorks to poke fun at Twitter wars for doing so, makes me love Chelsea Van Der Zee.
If I ever see one of those stupid Americans again because this whole drama isn't completely over yet, I will summon Chelsea to drown them to the bottom of the Ocean.

The Boys and to some extent Umbrella Academy (but more emphasis on the boys) is the best example of what I mean when I say why not adapt some poor source material and have writers who allergic to sticking to the source material and obsessed with wanting to make things their own.
It worked so well for The Boys, no one was crying over the loss of message, story, or even art because lowkey there's nothing to grieve. The seasons I saw alleviated the surface idea of what the comic is about, a dark parody of sorts.
The people who would throw fits about race and/or gender races couldn't care less about any of the changes and instead waffle on about completely different issues. Or idk I'm assuming the people who take issue with race/gender changes are the same people who were annoyed by the show's left wing theme becoming more apparent and obvious later in the show.

Watched the first season of Umbrella Academy with summer and I really enjoyed it. It’s got a lot of the usual topics I find compelling (estranged adult siblings, traumatizing childhood, body dysphoria, incest as a response to isolation and abuse) all wrapped up in a funky parody of 20th century adventure comics with kid sidekicks/kid superheroes.
I wish I’d come up with some of these characters because 5 being a kid who got out of his fathers abusive house but stumbles into a world that he isn’t prepared to live in, lives an entire lifetime alone, and then finally comes back to his family and (literally) turns back into the kid he was when he left is perfect. All the powers being (maybe a little on the nose) representations of the coping mechanisms they used to survive the abuse or the manifestation of the abuse itself is so clever and yet so obvious.
They’re all excellent (Diego’s offbrand nightwing lifestyle, Allison’s manipulation that got her so much as a child slowly destroying her life, Vanya’s whole fucking thing Jesus Christ) but Luther especially is lingering in my brain. 1. I love the clear connection to cyborg my beloved 2. Very clear allegory for child sexual abuse, his body being made monstrous to him because of what his father did to “protect” him. 3. The fact that he never left home and shuffles around the huge house, bundled in layers of jackets to hide himself, eating at the kids table. He breaks my heart.
According to summer, the later seasons drop the ball and eventual devolve into hot garbage which is too bad because the premise of deeply miserable former child superheroes coming back together to try to become something more than their dad’s failed experiment is so delicious and beautiful.
But all that praise aside, I think if they were gonna drop the ball and be stupid the least they could have done was have an episode where Victor, 5, and Luther go to the mall to get 5 some new clothes so he doesn’t have to wear the uniform, victor is also getting clothes cause he’s transitioning and Luther gets caught staring longingly at a beautiful summer dress, cue music, LUTHER’S TRANSITIONING see the vision people reclaim your body, kill the dad that lives in your head, move out of your dads house be a nonbinary lesbi-
And 5 starts dressing like shit. No more cute fitted suits. He spent 50 years in isolation in apocalypse world. He should get really into idk. T shirts with wolves on them. I’m still workshopping this
#I guess Klaus can come to the mall too#Luther means a lot to me#we can free them from Netflix with the power of transgender headcanons#the umbrella academy

So I'm pretty new to the fandom, having binge watched seasons 1-3 after watching a parody of the Umbrella Academy. After having read spoilers for s4 I decided to skip out on it for the time being. Being a new fan, I hated what they did to the characters and I can't imagine how betrayed those of you who have watched since the beginning must feel.
So I decided to cope by reading Five fanfic. But not just any fanfic... the type I usually stayed away from: reader insert. It's just something that had never caught my attention since in other fandoms I love there are two characters that I ship. Not so in UA. As in any reader's life, there comes a time when we are struck by AUs... and so I've started writing. However, I've found myself at a loss and have nowhere to turn other than here.
My question is: I'm writing from the reader POV and there's a moment I shift to Five's POV. But I find myself still referring to the reader as 'you' rather than 'she.' Is that correct? I mean, I'm sure I can write whatever the hell I want, but as someone who had never read this type of fic before... I would appreciate your help. 😅

Wow I’m really disappointed. There’s so much about the last season of Umbrella Academy that is promising. I am however NOT happy about the negative portrayal of mask wearing and mask wearers. I don’t understand the new characterization of Klaus. He’s written to be perceived as overly cautious, but it comes across as insensitive and cartoonish. Which is an odd choice.
Not to mention a concerning one given how stigmatized substance abuse disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety and finally usage of PPE are all already. Trivialized and invalidated too. Media portrayal can and has been documented to have a significant impact culturally, socially and even can politically.
It is in incredibly poor taste to characterize Klaus this way, after portraying his traumas with such sensitivity in the past. Also showing him on screen, ticking boxes for certain recognizable mental health conditions in the most cartoonish clownish way possible, doesn’t come across as self aware or as if Klaus is using humor to cope (or that the writers get such problems) but turns it into a punchline at his expense. And the writers and show runners manage to portray both mental health conditions, as well as people using and who us PPE to practice public health and personal health protection terribly.
Which is something I didn’t need as someone who both has multiple disabilities including several like the ones depicted, and someone who uses PPE to protect myself and others in a pandemic that has not ended, is far from funny and amidst other disease outbreaks that are being handled intentionally piss poorly by official health organization around the globe. I think this final season may negatively add fuel to the fire of ableism and eugenics that informed, caring and or oppressed people (including disabled) have been dealing with, especially the last almost 5 years.
ID: 47.952 fps.C4 episode 406 Scene 5 through X Take 1 aspect ratio 2 3 8: 1 -35 s A4 4 director Neville kid camera Michael Marshall. Counter, neon red, illuminated "00.26.53.18
Yes the show has quite a comedic beat, however tonally thus far the show is having trouble balancing it with more dramatic or serious moments. It’s as if it can’t manage to commit to them in season 4. The show runners can’t seem to resist injecting humor even when it’s not warranted. I’m not sure if they were worried about the tone becoming too intense and heavy, but some of the best comedy comes from tragedy.
It is possible to play Klaus’s struggles straight and have comedic notes. Not in anything that he says, but how it lands and the other characters react and interact with him. Or perhaps him making morbid or sardonic jokes. I’m not totally sure where the story is going, it seems to have promise so I’ll reserve my verdict on that for now. It’s difficult that almost everyone’s acting seems…off, like being off beat, unsuccessfully, so you can’t find the rhythm so it’s challenging to listen to. Ugh, pacing issues I guess I’d say. Standout performances I think hit the mark or much better than the others is timeline 2’s Ben, Lila, Jean and Gene — a bit strange but they’re definitely hilarious and entertaining —,
I can foresee myself enjoying the story while not caring for certain aspects of the direction and acting. I will say season 4 does not feel like the others, but in a way that it does not compliment or is relative to them. Without proper grounding, tone, and pacing the other elements DO NOT work. It ends up feeling like a fairly different series. There’s nothing wrong with a show going in a different direction for the conclusion, I just find it disappointing it’s as if it’s made itself into a joke and becoming an exaggerated parody of itself. A piece of media not taking itself seriously tends to land one of two ways, a very fun time or anatomy of a failure.

Welcome, all!
I’m Meagan, aka Winged, and I’ve been kicking around the Narnia fandom since 2008! In addition to writing for random other fandoms over the years, I’ve recently fallen deep into Danny Phantom. So I figured this was a great time to make a little intro masterlist of the sort of stories you can find over on my AO3!
Narnia 🦁
I…have written so much Narnia, y’all. I won’t link absolutely everything but will highlight series and and personal favs:
In Some Darker Age: a collection of mostly unconnected dark AUs spanning the entirety of the series. Including Susan as Jadis, and witchy!Jill.
📖 What the Thunder Said: Lucy and Edmund spend 5 years in Narnia as the Witch's wards.
📖 however deep the magic lies: Susan becomes Jadis.
📖 by the blood of the stars: Witchy Jill is the Lady of the Green Kirtle’s apprentice.
📖 to perish in fire and water: a sort-of sequel to Witchy Jill, also featuring Susan!Jadis and the end of the world.
In a Lighter Age: parodies, crackfic, and other absurd Narnia AUs. Featuring my very favourite: BTS in Narnia.
📖 Roll for Initiative: D&D AU of the Prince Caspian movie
📖 if one could drive forever: crossover of Last Battle and that infamous Supernatural finale
📖 Beyond Typical Sightseeing: Members of BTS keep falling into Narnia
Multi-Chapter Stories:
📖 Against All the Powers Ranged: Edmund time-travels through Charn and meets Jadis’ sister again and again
📖 The Splendour of the Stars: Peridan/Edmund during the Golden Age, with bonus Aravis
One-Shots:
📖 Garbed in Feathers or Scales: Susan visits the island of the Sirens.
📖 Witching Season: Jadis seduces the last pre-Winter king of Narnia
📖 White Lilies: an asexual queen of Narnia finds her heir
📖 Tidings from Beaversdam: Caspian/Edmund post VDT ruling Narnia together
[See all Narnia fic]
Danny Phantom 👻
📖 Ghost Town: Valerie investigates Amity Park nine years after all its citizens disappeared (Invisobang 2022)
📖 Brother Mine: Jazz returns to Amity Park to reconnect with feral Danny
📖 Something in the Shadows: Jazz's college roommate learns about ghosts (companion to Brother Mine)
📖 Cool Tones: Paulina Phantom AU (Reality Trip zine)
📖 Half Rage: Danny has Lazarus Pit Madness (DC-Fusion)
📖 Something Rotten: Hamlet AU with bonus Ghost King AU (Invisobang 2023)
[See all Danny Phantom fic]
Other Fandoms 📚
12 Monkeys
📖 Strange Happenings at the Deacon Brothers Bar: post-series, Deacon meets some strange people
Among Us
📖 Oh Blue, If Only You Knew: Time Travel fic
Everything Everywhere All At Once
📖 Knife Skills: Chad and Raccacoonie origin story
Lockwood & Co
📖 Locked: Norrie experiences Ghost Lock
Artemis Fowl / Umbrella Academy
📖 Regarding the Likelihood of Dodging Certain Death: Artemis and Number Five work together to stop yet another apocalypse

what media do you like to consume sleepy
You know how my music tastes are all over? So are my media preferences.
I like cheesy, bad Chinese dramas, but also I like really well acted, compelling storyline dramas.
I like anime, though I've only been watching it with friends of late.
I like close knit found family or other variations on friends/coworkers, especially with action or hurt/comfort.
I really, really like emotional gut punches sandwiched in between shenanigans, i.e. the umbrella academy, mash, Ted lasso.
I like silly nonsense, like parodies or bad movies.
I like fan films. Bonus points for blood that you can tell is red colored corn syrup and fantasy settings with power lines in frame.
I like some procedural crime shows, 'cause they're not all made equal! Or have likeable casts! NCIS and Bones are my first choice, but also ncisla or l&osvu.
I like British crime dramas too, like Midsommar Murders and Father Brown.
I like superhero stuff, but it ain't all made equal either. Justice league and young justice were pretty fantastic tho.
I like fantasy stuff, like Merlin or Shadowhunters (but I have THOUGHTS) or The Originals or One Piece!
And I like to snoop out adaptations, whether they're of things I am familiar with or not.
I like movies like a knight's tale and ladyhawke and master and commander and lord of the rings and mission impossible and stardust and top gun and star wars and casablanca and lots of other ones.
And other stuff, too.
