Some personal findings regarding why I do not like Jane as of first ep

Last Sunday I was even kinda suprised with myself how much I did not like Jane but then I remembered. (Also this week BLs all feel weidly personal to me). I studied Management of artistic institutions and I did my fair share of student internships (our requrement was like 2 to 4 weeks, but we also had a lot of practical classes (mosty in theaters)) and I wanted to say that in all this years I have never ever meet a person with attitude like Jane. BUT actually I did. It's just the denial syndrome kicked in and I really do not like to remember it. She pretty openly told me that I'm not suitable for this job and I should behave differently and so on and on and etc., and she also kinda accused me of taking drugs (which was absurd and only added to my confusion) - it was before theaters arrived to festival in town and it was my first day with this team (before I worked with marketing, cinema staff and in decorator room) - and I like run away from the building, call my mum, cried and I was really contemplating not coming back - but I needed to finish last week of my intership. Which I did, and this lady finally got around to me, but this first interaction kinda gave me trauma. (Also there where a lady in art gallery who called me young lady in the nastiest way possible, when I went to check if stuff for theather parade was ready, but this was a one time thing)

Fun fact: it's like 7 or 8 years later (and I did some other stuff in between) I do work in the place I did my intership and the lady who said all this things to me retired in conflict with the entire company. (Second lasy still works there but I do not think she remembers me)

So like yeah, this is why I do not like Jane in first ep

I have to say, I really love the balance and parallels The Trainee is pulling off with their interns. Specifically though, the focus on BaMhee and Ryan as our central leads, because they directly parallel each other in this story.

Of our interns, BaMhee and Ryan are the ones that didn’t really mean to be there. BaMhee is there following Tae with no real aspirations of her own outside of being close to him. Ryan is there because his only friend encouraged him to try it and he got pulled into the wrong interview. They both show up relatively aimless and without a real objective which is contrasted by Tae and Pie who are so focused on their dreams/objectives they have a hard time seeing around their own plans. Pah has a dream, like Pie and Tae, but he lacks confidence in his ability to complete his dream, in the way that Ryan struggles with his confidence.

And throughout the story, they’ve allowed Ryan and BaMhee to start finding themselves within the story. Both have become more involved and valuable to production as time has gone on. In the early episodes, BaMhee was usually texting Tae and Ryan was often silent and confused. Now BaMhee takes initiative and makes her own decisions. Ryan has taken to coming up with his own ideas and sharing them, as well as getting involved in scene set up and being better at handling extras.

Both had very significant revelations in today’s episode about who they actually want to be or might be that were explored in 4/4.

BaMhee realized she was still in love with Tae and while she likes Judy, she doesn’t like her enough to want to have a full relationship. I was always worried that BaMhee liked the attention and the confidence of Judy because we didn’t get to see much of Judy beyond her work persona (unlike Jane who we saw behind the curtain much earlier). I actually loved BaMhee’s speech to Judy about how no one person is an exact fit (which is why you cannot survive on one relationship alone - romantic, familial, friend - a person needs multiple people) and how both Tae and Judy have things that fit her and things that don’t. But it’s the love and feelings that she has for Tae that make her want to try.

And I find this evolved for BaMhee because it often felt, in the early eps, that she just wanted to be with Tae to be with Tae and not for her relationship with Tae. Like it didn’t feel like a thing she was choosing so much as clinging to. I know she knows that because she told Tae flat out what she wants, which BaMhee never did before. She laid out she doesn’t want grand gestures or big surprises; she just wants time.

Directly paralleled with Ryan, who has now had Jane in his home, and is finding his footing. We saw it some the last two episodes, but this episode had Ryan contemplating his dreams, and who he is, and what persona he might wear, or not. I loved the throwback to the interview and him explaining while he didn’t want to be porridge with side dishes then, just a person in the background supporting, now he does want to be porridge with side dishes because he wants to figure out what fits him best. Who he wants to be as a grown up.

I love that Jane pointed out earlier in the episode that no “adult” has it all together and even asked if people need big dreams. His own contemplation of his dreams and where he is over where he thought he might be was a lovely reflection in the conversation with Ryan. It’s beautiful how they talk about these things.

And @lurkingshan has a beautiful post on BaMhee’s relationships with Judy and Tae respectively, and how Ryan and Jane are slower, but Ryan and Jane are also deeper. Judy didn’t really listen to BaMhee, not really, or ask probing questions. Judy and BaMhee both operated separately, sometimes in concert and sometimes in opposition, whereas Jane and Ryan communicate about ideas and feelings and dreams. Another contrast I’ve enjoyed was Jane let Ryan in first, with the feeding and bringing him home, before he crossed into Ryan’s world in episode 10. Which is a contrast to Judy showing up at BaMhee’s family restaurant (entering her space first) and having BaMhee feed her while we still know very little about Judy. Yes she talks BaMhee out, later, but she doesn’t ask first. Jane always asks. It’s a very cool contrast of how both of their relationships with their mentors have helped clarify things for BaMhee and Ryan in multiple ways, while being very different.

Anyway, while I am sad my sapphic plans didn’t pan out, I still love this show dearly and it’s so well written and beautifully shot.

happy to have an offgun sunday show back on the docket but i can already tell this series is going to put a bee in my bonnet every week about late stage capitalism foisting its cancer upon all workplace cultures and turning things like internships from learning and exploratory opportunities to build skills and discover interests in a field, to an expectation of free/low paid but inexplicably pre-skilled labour. do you think ye olde blacksmith's apprentice showed up to the first day of the apprenticeship and the blacksmith is like "what do you mean you don't know how to shoe a horse?? that's so basic" no. the expectation of apprenticeship is that a newborn emptyheaded youngin with a vague notion that metal is cool shows up, and is taught how to blacksmith. the expectation is not that the young savant of metalwork turns up with a list of horses already shoed, including One Very Special One in the Royal Stable, and god would you please please please allow me to debase myself for you, o blacksmith? my resumé is just like the journeyman's!! this workplace culture is a modern invention!! they used to teach you things at work!!

[breathing audibly] i just think entry level should mean entry level, and that as much effort goes into gathering experience that makes people competitively hire-able, ability, opportunity, and luck also play a role. it is lucky to know your passion early enough to be able to groom yourself to competitiveness in a sharky field of work, but a person should be able to turn up for entry level positions/interning with an unabashed "i know nothing" as long as it's followed with an "and i'm ready to learn" and it is in neoliberalism's favour to allow work environments to cut their costs by eschewing the responsibility to teach. to train the trainee.

More Hot Property

Last week I posted a combined ep 1 and ep 2 round-up of the shared clothing in Peaceful Property, mainly because of the sheer amount that had appeared in ep 2 (5) following on from the ones in ep 1 (3).

I don't like the fact that Tae broke things off with Bah Mee. It felt like a cop-out, instead of him course correcting like he should have. I'm glad that the show had him realize that Bah Mee falling for someone else didn't come out of nowhere, but from his own neglect of their relationship.

Bah Mee is solely responsible for her actions, but it takes two people to be in a relationship and by Bah Mee's own words and from what the show has show us, she has been carrying the emotional weight and LABOUR of their relationship from the very start. That is EXHAUSTING. They've been together for 3+ years, and Tae gives minimum effort. I can't begin to imagine how insecure and scared that made Bah Mee feel. Yes, I know he cares, but you have to express that to your partner. Internalizing those feels means nothing to someone who can't read your mind to know your true thoughts and intentions. His lack of emotional affection made Bah Mee overcompensate and more susceptible to being swayed when given affection and attention. Just cause and effect.

I know the separation will be good for Bah Mee to grow as an individual, who puts herself first, but I believe it's a regression on Tae's part, despite the consensus I've seen on how mature it is of him. A breakup shouldn't have been his first answer to solve the problem. Why couldn't he have tried with her to rework their relationship to be more balanced. That seems more reasonable than him, never learning how to balance his work and personal life and how to properly communicate with his partner.
