Mtg story was really good this time and I have exactly one guess why: it was written by K. Arsenault Rivera! They also wrote The Tigers Daughter, one of my favorite books.
I dont want to give spoilers, but for an MTG story (which are usually pretty bad although I do like to read em) this was great! The pacing, dialogue, etc were all well written. And someone I love even got an unexpected happy ending! Rivera did a wonderful job with the material, and made the best mtg story in a while.
If you wanna talk about it I am all ears.

Gricko Grimgrin is the most character ever. He adopted an owlbear as his daughter. He went to goblin college. He tries to appeal to kids with rap. He eats cigars. He saw his best friend getting plowed behind a tree and was totally okay with it. He accidentally killed his own uncle. He had an imaginary friend who was an eldritch abomination. He got fey cursed into being handsome so many times he ended up actually becoming handsome. He's british.

Do you think they ever told Michelle about the police raid she came to?
From Michelle's point of view, it's like:
Get called to a police raid because apparently there's an elephant? in a flophouse?
Roll up and discover the cops understated the problem; it's an elephant and a rhino and a wolf and a gorilla. Also possibly a skunk and a hawk, but those are native to the area so maybe the poor skunk is just lost.
Attempt to tranq the rhino before he can flatten a police car; do not succeed.
Discover that THE BIRD has A GUN. Exchange fire with the fucking bird who has a fucking gun.
Succeed in chasing the animals away, even though none of them end up drugged enough to go down.
Discover there was no circus in town, nor was there a mass escape of an illegal home zoo.
Go home. Drink to forget.
Find out that your daughter can turn into a wolf. Find out one of her friends is a hawk who can fire projectile weapons. Witness two of her other friends turning into a gorilla and an elephant.
She's a smart lady. I'm sure she can put the pieces together and ground Cassie for eternity, even if no one spells it out for her.

A while ago I saw a post making the metaphor that Armand was a tiger who really really wanted you to put him on a leash but he was still. You know. A tiger. So if you don't put him on a leash he's going to eat you. And while that mental image is very funny its always struck me as such an oversimplification of what was actually going on in Paris which was more like
Okay so imagine you're roaming through the countryside and you find this tiger who is guarding a herd of goats. And you're like hm. That's weird. Tigers aren't known for doing that. And you talk to the tiger and it turns out he HATES guarding the goats and he's a little bit afraid of the goats also. And you're like my dude why do you not just eat the goats. And he explains to you his very sad tragic backstory about how he was kidnapped and sold to a circus as a cub and they used his fear of fire to train him and eventually he was so broken in by being threatened and burned all the time that they were able to just abandon him here in the countryside with these goats and tell him to guard them, knowing that his lingering fear would keep him in line even after he was away from them. And this tiger looks at you with his big sad eyes and says im sorry about the goats and how they want to kill you but I'm just still really fucked up about the circus, you see. And what do you say in response to this, hm? Do you offer to help the tiger in any way? No, of course not. That would be silly. "You know who used to work in a circus?" you say, striking a match, "Me!"

Stormclan is pretty cool, I’m glad they are a direct result of the clans and not Rouge Group 255674385 that pops up like Minecraft mobs at night
Didn’t ivypool kill beetlewhisker? Will they remember it
The mental image of playing minecraft and Darktail spawns on your roof like a spider, refusing to leave in the daylight and making annoying chittering noises, is magical thank you.
Anyway nah, that was Brokenstar. Ivypool killed Antpelt, not Beetlewhisker. I have doubts they're going to remember that though, and if they do, it'll be one of those "don't worry guys we TOTALLY remember the events in our series!" throwaway lines we've been getting recently. The type that's thought in her head or thrown out in passing, but doesn't significantly contribute to Ivypool's emotional struggle.
I think Ivypool's actually the part of this SE that I'm most apprehensive about, funny enough. StormClan's got me pretty excited, but my hopes kinda started falling when I found out Dovewing was going on the road trip. I do not like the story that the Erins tell between the sisters, and I feel like they keep getting forced together to "reconcile their differences" when it would make a MUCH more effective story for the two of them to not do that.
See, what I like about Ivypool is that she's grudge-holding and spiteful. I LIKE that she tried to leverage her sisterhood with Dovewing in ASC to try and make her manipulate her husband. I find the fact she tried to sabotage SkyClan's chances at the lake back in AVoS to halt Dovewing and Tigerheart's relationship, slighting her apprentice in the process, to be COMPELLING.
I ENJOY reading about Ivypool being nasty. Both a victim of the Dark Forest who was targeted because she felt alienated, and yet, someone who has found a way to use Clan culture's most unfair aspects to her advantage. She'll NEVER see herself as the bully she actually is, because in her eyes, she's permanently the underdog.
so... I just have absolutely no desire to see Dovewing and Ivypool be "close."
Every time it happens on the page, it feels like it's Dovewing desperately wanting her sister to not treat her poorly, or believe in her, or just stop actively sabotaging her life. Then, Ivypool realizes this after a while and displays emotional intelligence that feels unfitting for her character, and apologizes.
It feels forced.
Like it's just happening because the authors know the fans want it, and not actually what these two characters would do. You get me?
I don't want to see them reconnect. I want more bittersweet examples in WC where family members have irreconcilable differences, but now and then, there's that little twinge of love, that old spark that you pray, THIS time, could become a fire... but it doesn't. There's just nothing left to burn.
TL;DR I'm feeling overall meh about Ivypool's Heart but looking forward to seeing what StormClan's all about.

you cannot script a hurricane, you have no idea of claudia's strength, moved her right up on her feet, just a roof shingle that flew off of your house, i can't get her out of my mind louis, i saved her from a fire so half a century later she could..., she looked at me at the end like a child looking to her father. the hurricane hitting full force right at that moment. armand was both right and wrong, you cannot script a hurricane, again, you have no idea of claudia's strength, she's not a shingle, claudia is the whole hurricane.
