"Well, hello little one." the queen sighed dreamily to the little grub approaching her.
Tumblr media
She smiled a sleepy smile and chuckled. How long had it been since she wobbled her way into the creche on weary, rubbery legs and flopped to the floor in a most undignified 'sploot'? It felt like it had only been a few minutes but she had closed her eyes. Maybe she had dozed off? No. She could hear in the nearby chamber, Twilight was still drawing the bath for them.
AH. Hearthswarming night. She purred, reviewing the sensations in her hearts. They had spent some rapturously wonderful time lost in each other. They giggled. They nuzzled. They blathered on about anything, everything and nothing at all like teenaged foals, adrift in the vibrant ecstasy of being in love.
Yes! Then, Twilight had suggested a bath. While she had drawn the heated, perfumed water Chrysalis had wobbled her weary way into the children's creche to check on their youngest larvae. Now, here she was, splayed out on the floor on her abdomen with her plot in the air like a squashed spider.
A squashed spider with one of their infant daughters chittering into her snoot like a overjoyed puppy.
Her dual irises shifted and focused to take in the full emotional spectrum as she flickered the air with her tongue, tasting for the tiny grub. She extended her crown of antennae and expanded her consciousness to it's normal place in the hive mind's nexus. Reaching out through the nebulae of stardust and memory she examined the forming consciousness, the shape of thoughts, feelings, experiences, new as they were. In her understanding of the world, this was the true shape of a changeling.
Ah. Now she recognized this one. RGMF19. Reconnaissance Guard, Mobile Forces, Unit one, Operative nine- OR as Twilight would call her "Ragamuffin".
She gave a pleasantly resigned sigh. It was a minor annoyance, this naming convention, yet another instance of pony-kind forcing their concept of normalcy on another species. Ethnocentrism was an unfortunate habit the ponies were still struggling to unlearn. Still, Chrysalis understood that it comforted her beloved wife to assign individual names to their daughters. Twilight lacked her expanded set of senses and connection to the hive mind it was the only way she could easily differentiate between their children which was something of a necessity in motherhood.
The tiny grub stared at her with a brilliantly beaming smile and a tiny, squeaking hiss. She couldn't help but chuckle in return. Even a pony could easily tell that she was one of her new hive of drones, sired solely with Twilight's love. As opposed to all previous changelings, the little one's eyes were large and violet, like their ponymother, sparkling with intelligence and curiosity. The long, inky eyelashes framing her eyes flicked at the base of her ears. Her ears were also unusually long, like those of a rabbit. The segments of her caterpillar-like body were decorated with a trail of lavender spots, cascading along her backside like the petals of a flower.
Her clutch was so different from all which had come before them.
"One thing is for certain. Your life will be a better one."
The mighty queen gave the little grub a nudge with her snoot, rolling her over on her back. She tilted her head slightly to contemplate the wiggling little thing. She was so fragile, so frail, yet so formed by the love of her precious, irreplaceable bride- so strangely, paradoxically powerful in the promise of a new, better tomorrow for her kind.
"You will never have to hide in the shadows as your predecessors. You will never have to fear others simply knowing you exist. Their fear of you being what you are will not threaten to starve you out. You will walk in the light and they will accept you as you are. In this world which we are building, your ponymother and I, this New Equestria, your birthright is one of unimaginable power and possibility. They will love you- as your mothers love you, daughter of The Hive."
Her forked tongue flickered out and gave a playful spree of butterfly kisses to the tiny changeling babe sending it into a fit of wiggling hisses and clicking.
"Happy Hearthswarming, my Ragamuffin."
Chrysalis gently lifted the little grub in her jaws and placed her in a strand of webbing near her sleeping clutchmates. With a small nuzzle goodnight, she quietly turned to stumble away, leaving the nursery chamber to return to her wife's embrace.

The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (in French : La mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même), most often called The Large Glass (in French : Le Grand Verre), is an artwork by Marcel Duchamp over 9 feet (2.7 m) tall and almost 6 feet (1.76m) wide. Duchamp worked on the piece from 1915 to 1923 in New York City, creating two panes of glass with materials such as lead foil, fuse wire, and dust. It combines chance procedures, plotted perspective studies, and laborious craftsmanship. Duchamp's ideas for the Glass began in 1912, and he made numerous notes and studies, as well as preliminary works for the piece. The notes reflect the creation of unique rules of physics, and myth which describes the work.
The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even is also the title given to The Green Box notes (1934) as Duchamp intended the Large Glass to be accompanied by a book, in order to prevent purely visual responses to it.[1] The notes describe that his "hilarious picture" is intended to depict the erotic encounter between the "Bride", in the upper panel, and her nine "Bachelors" gathered timidly below in an abundance of mysterious mechanical apparatus in the lower panel.[2] The Large Glass was exhibited in 1926 at the Brooklyn Museum before it was broken during transport and intentionally left broken by Duchamp. He decided not to change the glass but to glue the pieces back together.
The entire composition is shattered, but it rests sandwiched between two pieces of glass, set in a metal frame with a wooden base. The top rectangle of glass is known as the Bride's Domain; the bottom piece is the Bachelors' Apparatus. It consists of many geometric shapes melding together to create large mechanical objects, which seem to almost pop out from the glass and ever-changing background.
The Bride is a mechanical, almost insectile, group of monochrome shaded geometric forms located along the left-hand side of the glass. She is connected to her halo, a cloudy form stretching across the top. Its curvilinear outline and grey shading are starkly offset by the three undulating squares of unpainted glass evenly spaced over the central part of the composition. The Bride's solid, main rectangular form branches out into slender, tentacle-like projections. These include an inverted funnel capped by a half-moon shape, a series of shapes resembling a skull with two misplaced ears, and a long, proboscis-like extension stretching down almost as far as the horizon line between her domain and that of the bachelors. Her top-located domain is almost completely monochrome, with a wash of beige comparable to the cool colours of a cloudy sky.
The Bachelors' earthbound, lower domain, referred to by Duchamp as "La Machine Célibataire" (The Bachelor Machine), is a collection of much warmer, earthier colours of brown and golden tones. The Bachelors' Domain centres on the nine "Malic Molds". These dark brown shapes have a central vertical line, some with horizontal ones across them. They resemble the empty carcasses of clothes hanging from a clothesline, much more than they do actual men. They are interconnected through a spider web of thin lines, tying them to the seven conical cylinders. The cylinders range in color, and move in stages from nearly transparent on the left side, to translucent in the middle, to almost opaque on the far right. The opaque ones have swirling dark brown and gold colors and are almost solid three-dimensional forms, whereas the translucent ones are more ghostly outlines. They are connected in a line from tip to base and form a half circle. This rainbow-like shape is impaled centrally by a pole which connects them to the "chocolate grinder" at the lower part of the glass, and to the X-shaped rods that dominate the top center of the Bachelors' Domain.

so, we’ve all at least heard of the iron fist, right? whether it’s from the comics or netflix show, i am 90% sure you’ve at least heard about him! well, i’m here to tell you that there’s more that meets the eye! :)
the netflix show doesn’t flesh out danny as a character that well and some of you probably despise him (...i do too) but his comic self is waaay different. if nmcu danny is whiny and all "because im the iron fist" every five minutes, then comics danny is a mix of a silly little guy, dumbass (affectionate), and a walking sunshine.
of course, there are some comics where he may act a lot different, but he is just a green flag—albeit traumatised—little guy!
the iron fist show itself MESSES UP the lore so badly that i literally do not know what’s so special about the iron fist. so here’s a (not so) deep dive into the lore of the iron fist mantle until lin lie! and some comic recommendations of danny :D
(open the cut for more 💖)
let’s start with the basics, shall we?
What is the Iron Fist? Who is the Iron Fist?
the iron fist is a power that comes from a dragon named shou-lao. this power is the dragon’s chi—or the soul, according to chinese belief. this chi allows them to access the dragon’s powers and unlock different ways of using said powers! the most common was is to turn their fists into "things of unto iron"!
Tumblr media
however, the iron fist is not just a power, it’s a mantle given to those who can defeat the dragon themselves. these candidates are trained in k’un lun and if they do win, they will be named the champion of k’un lun. the first iron fist is quan yaozu.
What? What the hell is K’un Lun? What do you mean ‘champion’?
i’m glad you asked! k’un lun is one of the capital cities of heaven! there are 7 capital cities of heaven, according to iron fist lore, each with their own champions who possesses different abilities. they are also called the immortal weapons.
(note that the new weapon in this picture is davos, a long time nemesis of danny, because of circumstances. the actual weapon is the crane mother’s child.)
Tumblr media
the fat cobra is from peng lai, a child of a pig farmer raised in abandonment. he was an opera singer as a child and fought in both sides of the world war.
the bride of nine spiders is from the kingdom of spiders, yet her origins are unknown.
dog brother comes from the under city and used to be a poor street orphan with an adoptive brother to protect. he was a slave, too.
tiger’s beautiful daughter is a strong woman from tiger island, an island where women ruled over men. i’m not kidding, in the one chapter where her origins are introduced, she literally destroyed the patriarchy. we stan.
prince of orphans is from z’gambo. unfortunately, we do not know his origins, but he is powerful. like necromancer powerful.
read more about them in ‘the immortal weapons’! absolutely worth it.
Wait, wait, wait. The Immortal Weapons? Are they immortal or just the mantle? Is Danny immortal?
...yes and no.
they are immortal until they die in battle. in a sense where the immortality only applies to their age not their whole body. however, this is highly speculation, since we do not actually know if the term ‘immortal’ refers to them or their title. what we do know is that danny refused to eat the apple of immortality, making him more or less fully human. and he dies multiple times. sort of.
Ooookay... How do you become the Iron Fist?
to become the iron fist, you must be trained in k’un lun as a child of k’un lun. these trainings are watched under lei kung, the thunderer, who is immortal. those who want to challenge shou-lao has to fight each other and win before they are allowed to fight the dragon. these fights are a test of not only physical strength, but spiritual strength, too. chi is like... an inner power. a part of your soul.
then, they fight the dragon. if they figure out how to and win, they will be given the mark of the dragon (the iconic iron fist logo) and they must plunge their fists into the dragon’s molten heart. survive.
Wait, if only a child of K’un Lun is allowed to be the Iron Fist, why does Danny become one? Isn’t he American?
orientalism
well, he was raised there, i guess. dunno. in orson randall’s case, though, it works because he was born in k’un lun despite his parents being american.
Who’s Orson Randall?
orson randall is danny’s predecessor. he’s the iron fist of the 1900s. he had fought in both world wars and more. tired old man. also a mentor of danny’s dad (whoopee). really a fucking cool character to read about definitely check out the orson oneshots.
Who’s Danny’s successor, then?
a chinese kid named lin lie! formerly the sword master, lie was last seen in death of doctor strange: white fox. he sort of died in that comic but SIKE! he’s back as the iron fist babyyyy !!!!!
Who’s my favourite Iron Fist?
it’s danny rand, duh. 🙄 (it’s wu ao-shi. what a girlboss).
What the hell.
hey man you’re gonna love danny and his tragic but interesting backstories i swear it’s just weird to summarize/say out loud 😮‍💨
anyway! some recommendations:
the immortal iron fist - start with this one, basics and a rework of his older comics history !!!
the immortal weapons + orson randall oneshots - just fun as fuck
avengers volume 2 (i think it was 2012)
defenders (2018) - if you like the nmcu this one is for you!
iron fist: living weapon
iron fist: phantom limb - blood, gore, and body horror warning!
immortal iron fists - girl dad danny rand im not kidding he’s so silly here
heart of the dragon
iron fist (2020) - lin lie !!
that’s it thank you for listening to me autistic rambling

I was tagged by @authortango - thank you kindly. <3
Last song: "Klown Bitch" by Sam Haft (from Helluva Boss). Absolute banger. I like his demo version better than the final version because I can understand the words better, and there's also an extra verse that wasn't in the episode.
Last movie: The Evil Dead (1983). I'd seen it before, my husband hadn't. Both of us agreed we don't need to watch it again.
Currently watching: Dragonball Z Kai. Hubby's a massive Dragonball fan, so he really wanted me to watch it with him. I'm glad Kai is not dragging things out the way the OG anime did, but it's still not my thing.
Currently reading: The Dragon's Bride. Tldr: Monsterfucker romance. It's hot.
Currently craving: Writing. I'm feeling itchy pen syndrome, but I have a doctor's appointment in a bit, so I don't want to get sucked in and be late. (Just ate so not craving any food)
Last thing you searched for writing purposes: The red spider lily in Japanese culture.

Identifying the Legendary Spirits
Tumblr media
From the Kayla X "Legendary Spirits" blind box figure collection:
This figure's name is "Blizzard".
She's the rare of the set, so I don't own her. But she's an obvious one! Clearly she's a Yuki onna, a Japanese yokai.
OR IS SHE
Unbeknownst to me, the idiot trying to figure out who all these figures are on my own, and naively believing the product description that claimed these spirits come from "all over the world" - there is actual documentation on who each and every one of them is, and surprise! they're all Chinese.
A few days ago while doing more research into this set, I found a 'Kikagoods Collections' youtube channel, and a video where a pair of hands and an AI voice open the full set of these Legendary Spirits, and there, in the pinned comment - a link to three blog posts on Kikagoods.com
Did you know Kikagoods has a blog section? Because I didn't! Do you know how many of these eight figures I identified correctly? Four! Well, three. Well, two and two halves.
First, the unambiguously correct.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'Forgotten', with her conspicuous bowl of soup, lantern walking stick, and spider lilies in her hair, is indeed the Chinese goddess Meng Po, who stands at Naihe bridge in the afterlife, giving her soup to the dead to drink so they forget their past life and can be reincarnated.
'Bleeding', with her red bridal gown and veil, dowry box, and rakshasa bird companions, is in fact the rakshasa who disguised herself as a bride and blinded a bride and groom on their wedding night, before escaping into the night.
Secondly, the half correct.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'Painted' is not the yokai ungaikyo, because yokai are in fact, not Chinese. But I did mention in that post the Chinese folktale of the Painted Skin, the demon who wore the painted skin suit of a beautiful woman in order to get close to a man and enter his home, ultimately being defeated by a Taoist priest. This is the true identity of Painted, who is using a bronze mirror to put the finishing touches on her lovely painted skin, and the wound on the back of her head is the seam of her suit. So I knew the inspiration, but didn't identify her correctly.
'Fatality' is indeed a nine-tailed fox spirit, but her inspiration was a little more specific. I did find the story that inspired her, but I didn't mention it in the post, so I'll only count myself as being half right about her. She is specifically the nine-tailed fox who possessed the concubine Su Daji of King Zhou of Shang, the last king of the Shang Dynasty. The fox spirit who possessed Daji was instrumental in the story of Zhou's tyrannical reign and eventual deposing, this story being notably adapted into the 16th century Ming Dynasty novel Fengshen Yanyi.
Thirdly, the incorrect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'Mirage', the pearl-holding, weeping mermaid figure, is not a generic representation of mermaid's tears. She is in fact a Chinese mermaid, or jiaoren, who fell in love with a Buddhist monk, Bai Gongzi, though they ultimately could not be together because of the fundamental differences between them. The jiaoren's tears become pearls. This story is from a collection of folktales, Soushen Ji. Without the clue that all of these spirits are Chinese, there was no real chance for me to find this specifically, as I can't even find a full version of it online, just summaries.
'Withered' is playing a pipa like I thought, but she was the only one I fully gave up on finding. Turns out she is based on Yang Yuhuan, or Yang Guifei, or Consort Yang, the favorite concubine of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, and one of the 'four beauties of ancient China'. Despite being loved by the Emperor, during an insurrection which forced him to flee from his palace, Yang was used as a scapegoat for the rebellion, and was forced to commit suicide at age 37. Her story was a partial inspiration for the Tale of Genji! I'm so glad to finally know who she is.
'Revenge' cannot be an onryo as I stated because, again, onryo are Japanese. She is in fact the White Bone Demon from Journey to the West! Like so many demons in that story she wants to make Tripitaka into a snack, so she disguises herself as a young girl, then an old woman, then an old man to try to get close, but gets killed by Sun Wukong each time, though this results in his temporary banishment from the group because the disguises were very good and it looked like the Monkey King kept killing random people just coming up for a chat. I've been meaning to get around to reading my copy of Journey to the West for ages, though I'm at least somewhat familiar with the highlights from some of Overly Sarcastic Productions videos on it, as well as some reading in college. I'm very pleased to know her identity, it makes me like her even more!
'Requite' is in fact a cat spirit, good job to me for figuring that out. She's not a thief of any kind, which I was hung up on, and she's not just a generic cat demon either. She is specifically a reference to one moment from the amazing history of the rise of Emperor Wu Zetian, the only female emperor of China. When Wu Zetian got the former Empress as well as the Emperor's previous favorite concubine demoted, then executed, the once-favored Consort Xiao Shufei cursed her before her death, declaring that she would be reborn as a cat, and Wu Zetian as a mouse, and Xiao would scratch her to death. If you're not familiar with her, Xiran Jay Zhao has two incredible videos on Wu Zetian's life and rise to the position of Emperor which I highly recommend.
And that's everyone...isn't it?
Lastly, the one they forgot.
Tumblr media
'Blizzard' is not covered by those three blog posts. But with some new confidence from all this new information and some more googling, I believe I have her. Not a yuki onna, not Japanese, but instead I believe this figure to be the Chinese goddess of snow, Tengliu. She's a pretty obscure goddess, with some places calling her the wife of the wind god Fengbo, and that the snowflake is a symbol of hers. That would explain the jade snowflake on Blizzard's belt!
Aaaand that's it! All eight (nine) of the Legendary Spirits figures identified. I wanted to do all this for me, but if you're a fan of these figures and wanted to know who they are, I hope this was helpful for you too.

Tessarion
(from the fanfic, The Man in the Pearl Mask)
Domain: Goddess of music, arts, knowledge, healing, plague, prophecy, poetry, beauty, and archery
Title: The Cruel or The Unseen
Family position: Mother of Syrax and wife of Vermax - had mortal family but abandoned them for a husband who later proved faithless
Personality: Cruel, conniving, far-sighted
Appearance: Unknown - always wears a pale grey veil and matching dress, eyes are rumoured to be green
Distinctive feature: Height of nine feet
Animal aspect: Silver spider
Inspirations: Medea, Psyche
Tessarion is the only ascended mortal among the Valyrian gods. Before immortality, she was a powerful enchantress. She fell in love with a mighty hero and betrayed her family to be his bride. That proved to be unwise, however. That hero, though strong and constant in battle, proved faithless in the marriage. After many years and two children, his eye wandered to a widow who had inherited her husband’s rights to part of the Freehold.
Tessarion’s fury drove her to terrible deeds. She decided not to kill him outright but instead plotted to take everything from him, leaving him with nothing but infamy to his name. She cursed the marriage bed itself to catch fire when he and his new bride first lay in it. The bride burned to death while he was spared even the smallest burn. The most terrible secret, however, came when the remains of the bed were pulled apart and the bodies of their children and the widow’s father were discovered.
Tessarion didn’t know it yet but she had caught the eye of Meleys and Vermax with her plot. Meleys rather approved of Tessarion’s plot to punish him and even said her plot was better than the punishment she had in mind for the hero. Vermax admired her and then desired her. He sent a dragon to help her escape and had it bring her to his house in a valley full of herbs and flowers where Tessarion could make every kind of potion and spell.
Vermax then wooed and eventually won Tessarion. Meleys petitioned to have Tessarion raised to godhood as she feared for the passing of the years. She herself had known heartbreak and did not want Vermax to go through the same. Besides, she herself had grown fond of Tessarion and of learning sorcery from her. Her petitions, however, were not enough. Shrykos, in particular, was horrified at the idea of a mere mortal being ascended to a level near her own.
However, Vermax managed to save the day. He did Arrax a very big favour and, in return, Tessarion was granted immortality. Though, Shrykos definitely sabotaged the ritual which resulted in Tessarion’s increased height.
Tessarion showed herself capable of taking on many roles and was responsible for a great deal of the Valyrian freehold’s prosperity. Good archers and a convenient plague befalling the enemy camp were invaluable in times of war, better quality poetry and art promoted the power of the gods and the Freehold and her healing arts made sure Freeholders lived longer and happier lives. And, above all else, her ability to see and manipulate the threads of fate made her invaluable to the gods. All but Shrykos warmed to her eventually.
Like her husband, she would walk among the mortals and answer mortals who wished to know their future. Then, one day, she gave a mortal an answer that he didn’t like. She promised nothing but doom on his house and that his line would end within his lifetime if he proceeded with his plans. That mortal had thought his marriage plans for his daughter had been perfect and grew wroth at the idea that it was foolish.
That mortal returned the next day and threw oil of vitriol in her face. She had been pregnant at the time and the attack brought on a premature labour. She gave birth to Syrax in the temple and the baby wrought a worse fate on the mortal than Tessarion had thought of while she recovered. Her healing arts allowed her to recover physically but trust is not something as easily mended. From that moment on, she wore a veil over her face and only spoke her prophecies to her chosen dreamers.
She also became much more inclined to cruelty toward mortals. She became deliberately vague and even downright misleading in her prophecies, delighting in the misery caused when her prophecies came true in a way that brought them only sorrow.
