Pre Production

I knew from the start that I wanted to create character animation for this project, as much as I like background art/concept art, I wanted to create a good piece of animation for my showreel. To start with for this project, I had an idea for a short film, titled 'sheep can foxtrot' which centred on an anthropomorphic ram who hears a little girls dancing shoes as she passes his farm, and becomes jealous that his hooves don't sound as good, so he tries to convince her to give them to him.

I had begun pre-production for this idea and created a logo for the film, as well as character design for the sheep and the little girl. I soon realised, however, that I wasn't going to have the time to create a full short film from start to finish, so whilst I like this idea and will definitely animate it myself at some point in the future, I needed to come up with something more feasible for a two month project.

After creating this pre-production, and then deciding to abandon the film idea, I really just wanted to get animating at this stage without going through the pre-production stage again. I decided that the best way to do this was to take the lip sync animation that I made last semester and improve on it, as I felt I had rushed it at the time anyway, and I was motivated to make it better. I already liked the character design and felt there was potential to produce some really nice animation with him, so I recorded some audio of my own, putting on a posh voice giving an order at a restaurant.

The character I would be animating is a fox, I really like Irish and British native animals (as you can probably guess by this stage) and the dynamics between the traditional predators, such the fox and the prey. I think this admiration comes from children's books I read as a kid, such as Danny the Champion of the world, Fantastic Mr Fox and James & the Giant Peach.

People have said that my work seems to take inspiration from Dr Seuss and Alice in Wonderland, and I can see why, they are definitely up my street, as my art and animation is strongly inspired by children's literature from my youth, both in narrative and style. I would say that Roald Dahl stories are my biggest inspiration however, because, as I've said, his stories are based in Britain and his stories gave me a stronger interest in British and Irish wildlife.

Dahl's work contains strong use of the relationships and traditional stereotypes of creatures to great effect, such as the grasshopper in James & the Giant Peach being a musician and less than complimentary of the sounds of other insects. Dahl also attempts to flip some of these stereotypes and typical dynamics by introducing the spider as kind, with the human aunts being the monsters, with the spider getting its revenge when the peach squishes the aunts, a reverse on spiders getting squished by humans.

I also really like traditional Irish and British art that depicts the dynamics between these predators and prey, and the flipping of these dynamics in symbolic imagery that can be seen in artwork as far back as the medieval period, and maybe even further back featuring animals such as the hare and the hound. One example that I think is interesting is the symbolic imagery of a hare holding a bow and arrow as a hound runs away from it, having turned the tables of the traditional dynamic, with the double meaning of the weak becoming the strong.

I, up until now, have usually stuck with the traditional roles of these animals in my work. but it is always something I enjoy exploring and researching.

Getting back to the practical work, as I already had the character design, and I recorded my own dialogue for the lip sync, I was ready to start animating immediately.

Above is the character I will be animating, which has the informal name of The Posh Fox. As he is a villain, I have based his design on sharp points and his body is in the shape of a triangle. It was a challenge to create an overweight character that follows the triangle design language of most villains, as obviously most obese characters are going to look very round and circular, but I think I achieved the aim of making him look villainous and untrustworthy .

For the mouth shapes I referenced Preston Blairs 'Cartoon Animation' and based my own shapes from his drawings. I tried to exaggerate these shapes as much as possible as I wanted my animation to be very cartoony and larger than life, as I feel that this character design warrants this. His mouth should expand as his personality and dialogue is based around eating and I imagine his mouth opening to a cartoonish size to eat as much as possible.

These mouth shapes were based on the words in the lip sync from last semester, so some syllables aren't covered, but I feel these shapes cover a suitably wide range of expressions to more than suffice.

Above is the audio that I will be animating to, which, as I said, I recorded myself. I, of course, had the performance of the character in mind when recording this, and was trying my best to match my voice up to what I imagine the character should sound like, which in this case is a posh, stuck up character. I also tried to pace the words in a way which emphasised the key words, the main ones here being "chicken" and "ten beers", but also gave space before these key words for good acting from the character to set it up.

What I mean is, instead of just going from one pose to the next, as the character was in my lip sync from last semester, I wanted to give myself space to really emphasise the character animation for my showreel by allowing space between the lines for the character to really express himself through facial expressions and body movement.

Thoughts on helaegond

helaegon has so much potential, yet gets so ignored. aegon & helaena just make sense from a political perspective - here's a v good analysis on this topic (i included my own comments)

in the books they have a more fleshed out relationship, aegon gets mad at jace for dancing with her, they are known to share a bed and after her death aegon insists that people only refer to her as "Queen Helaena", alongside "Queen Alicent" since "they are the only true queens" of Westeros !! so there is love there. aegon loves all of his family i will die on this hill if i must.

the show just gave us some crumbs, as in aegon is obviously not into helaena & forced to marry her. he rejects her as he rejects all of his duties, but it's hard to say if she is just a symbol of everything he is supposed to be (The Perfect Heir TM) or if he's just not attracted to her at all (maybe both). hard to say if this is an outright rejection of the practice of targcest or if these two individuals just don't happen to mesh. if aegon had another sister, would he still refuse to marry her? we don't know at this point, since they've barely developed their relationship.

that being said. it seems to me aegon acknowledges this is not an ideal relationship for him, but he doesn't go out of his way to antagonise helaena either. this is not an aegon iv/naerys situation. on the contrary, he mostly lets her be and tries to be kinda nice to her sometimes?

he is presented as a sexual harrasser, but is obviously not sexually violent with her (complimentary medal for doing the bare minimum, i know). at dinner, there is dialogue that suggests aemond is cajoling aegon into apologising to helaena for something and aegon mentions getting her some swanky gift. he's not angry about it, he just complies. when helaena inadvertently mocks him at dinner, he does not lash out at her in any way, he's just sort of humbled at being called out (this feeds into my theory that aegon accepts violence & insults from his own family but not from other sources). he doesn't get "angry" like in the books when jace dances with her, but his face totally falls and he is mortified, like he's resigned himself to jace's insult. he turns to aemond like "can you believe this kind of shit?" idk. there's something there.

their personalities may not gel well together, but he is such a loser craving validation that i can't imagine that he wouldn't get an ego boost if he got acceptance & encouragement from his sister (he has to deserve it first ofc but he's too busy being genre-aware). god knows where they will take this dynamic in the show, but i hope they choose to build up some rapport and empathy between them, bc it's a much more interesting story than another deadbeat targ king being mean to his sister-wife
