I find it very interesting how people react to shippers based on what they themselves think is the meaning of shipping. For me personally, it's a spectrum from finding a non-romantic relationship entertaining up to thinking the shipped people are soulmates.

I was wondering how you see Alysmond as the white/ reversed Dettles. I'm not hating just curious

Well, to start Daemon and Aemond are literally mirrors of each other(right down to their names).

Both are second sons of House Targaryen who must forge their paths in life since they’ll never inherit the throne. They have both done their share of questionable things to make their mark and they get more caught up with their need for vengeance, personal glory, and the women in their lives, than their responsibilities to their first families.*

*Daemon is married, but he is in an open marriage and Aemond isn’t married, but he’s betrothed to a lady from a great house to the benefit of his family.

Alys and Nettles are both lowborn bastard (non-Valyrian) women without a dollar to their names who have accusations(real or imagined) of witchcraft thrown their way. Both have the chroniclers of the Dance questioning why these powerful princes (who could have anyone they wanted) would ever look their way.

Alys is an old wetnurse though young looking and Nettles is young though “ugly” and Black. They are not who you would typically picture princes of the realm would want and yet Aemond and Daemon are infatuated in love with them to the point where they are willing to do things for them and put their lives ahead of anyone else’s.

Aemond goes back to Harrenhal after having abandoned it to save Alys from Sabitha Frey(this is something he didn’t even do for his mother and sister who were trapped in Kings Landing*) and Daemon chooses to abandon his wife and queen to save Nettles from an untimely death.

*I know he had his reasons for not going back/it probably would’ve been suicide going by himself, but that isn’t the point. He could’ve easily left Alys to her fate, but he didn’t same thing goes for Daemon with Nettles.

Both couples also have a severe age gap (20+ years) which is where in part the problematic accusations come into play (especially for Dettles).

I’ve seen people use the excuse that even though Aemond is a prince Alys is older than him. Hence, it evens out the power imbalance issue in comparison to Dettles, but what good is being older when your man/husband you married (with next to no witnesses) could turn on you at any moment, abandon you, or order your death and no one would bat an eye?

Aemond would never do that cause he cares for her, but he could easily do so and face 0 consequences for his actions, same for Daemon. Age isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card. It doesn’t protect a peasant woman against a prince. Alys has no more power in her relationship with Aemond than Nettles does with Daemon.

And honestly, Nettles does have a dragon. It’s nothing compared to what Daemon has, but she’s not completely powerless. If she didn’t want to be with Daemon based on her character(she’s a fighter) I think she would’ve left Maidenpool way sooner and never looked back.

Now their relationships aren’t carbon copies of each other, and it’s fine to like one more than another or you don’t like either, but the premise and dynamics at play (rich boy falls in love with and saves the poor girl; think Cinderella, but worse 🤣) are pretty much the same.

Totally Jonrya. The only other one with some solid foundations.

Then there's Edric Dayne x Arya which I appreciate because I like Edric, but I don't think it has a future in the books. I would have seen it well in another life where Arya has to settle for an arranged marriage, but gets to live with a decent person, in a place where women have a few more rights. In the land where her heroine Nymeria ruled.

Dany x Arya ...Like Rhaegar and Lyanna but better under any point of view. But it will never happen.

No canon basis other than parallels to the past but I like Aegon/young Griff x Arya too.

These are the main ones, then there are less popular and more crackship ones. As long as the relationship is consensual and the age gap isn't too big I don't complain. Cause everyone should love my gurl!

But of the little ones, my favorite is Willow Heddle x Arya. It doesn't exist, I'm the only person on earth who likes it, but... come on they'd love each other.

Over the years you built trust with them, and they may not seem like much of a threat - but hell, they have claws and beaks and will die for you.

First and foremost, you will always be protected - no matter what. Yes ... maybe he has a tracker on your car, and always has 'find my phone' on so that he knows where you are. All these precautions, is because of his line of work. He will neVER let anything come to harm you.

Despite the harshness of this job, Kyle shows understanding and compassion towards you. Giving you so much care and attentativeness.

Loves banter between you two. Early on in the relationship he called you his wife and would introduce you as such to practically everyone.

If ever there was one, Kyle would be a supportive and protective boyfriend. Encouraging you to do that wish you wanted. If you didn't want to do something, he's the first to tell you that it's okay not to do it.

Gives you gifts on random occassion. A bracelet here, then a bouqeut of flowers four days later. When he comes back from work he gives you presents as well i.e., earrings, or tokens of where he's been.

Something that he has and the others do not - is very good communication. Especially when it comes to loved ones. With you, he knows how scary it can get with him away, so he finds ways in wish you never feel alone.

Do you have favorite noncanon ships in asoiaf/f&b ?

Hi anon, fun question! I think most of my ships are technically non-canon? I definitely like my crackships.

Well, if you've found my blog you probably know that I would have solved the Dance with Aegon II/Baela Targaryen, but in case you didn't, please climb aboard this ship. @aifsaath and I have a post-Dance fic we're co-writing about them (and individual projects as well).

Jace/Cregan is one of those ships that feels like canon, even though the books don't mention it once. It is canon in my heart. I don't even really like Cregan, but I like to pretend this is the real reason he kept the war going after Rhaenyra died.

Helaena/Kermit Tully. I think I could talk Viserys into it and then Aemond wouldn't burn the Riverlands. Think of the lives saved. As a bonus, he's age appropriate and has cute freckles.

Alicent/Tyland Lannister postwar queerplatonic life partners

I guess the show made Jaime/Brienne canon but in the books they're not really (yet??). They were my first asoiaf ship years ago, which I suppose is a pretty common experience.

fAegon/Sansa. I just think it's a neat idea.

Someone asked me about the most chaotic pairings I could think of and I thought about Euron/Ramsay as a joke but then I was kind like ... but maybe?? Okay probably not ... but?? Look, I was curious enough to search up fic. There are 9 of them, and at least one is in French.

Thoughts on aegond lol

love it! aegond is somehow the most developed relationship between the siblings if you think about it.

there's so much push-pull here. both aegon & aemond are affected by their father's neglect, but in different ways. aegon reacts by rejecting all of the trappings of heirdom and kinghood, either bc he genuinely doesn't want any of it or bc he convinced himself he doesn't. everyone thinks he is so bad at it anyway that he won't even try. he's in a story he doesn't want to be in. too much drama, too much effort and for what? a spiky chair that cut his father until the meat started falling off. he drinks himself to death bc sobriety leads to self-analysis and who the hell wants to be reminded of their own failings all the time.

aemond reacts via perfectionism & repression. he constantly tries to better himself and denies himself whatever necessary in order to forge himself in the image of the perfect heir. aemond wants aegon to conform as well and is willing to pour his flesh in the cookie moulds and bake him himself if it meant he'd come out of the oven perfectly king-shaped. aemond craves everything that aegon has been given on a platter and is this close to snapping and taking everything away for himself. but he never does. he loves him. he came out of mother. how could he not love him? he can let him go only in as much as he could ever cut his other eye out of his skull, which is to say never, which is to say he'd rather die for his rightful king, which is to say he'd rather kill this pathetic street rat and then himself, blood coaslescing until they expire together.

aegon was once the taller, the more powerful, the more wordly, the only one with a dragon. he used to bully aemond and toy with him, but then aemond lost an eye and he wasn't there and mother was right and father would have hurt them. so aegon drinks and whores and tries to forget how useless of a protector he is, but now aemond has the bigger dragon, he is tallest, he is the better fighter, the better son, the better heir, the better husband. how easy must it be to become all of these things within the freedom of second-son-ship, without the insidious expectation of responsibility that burdens, that haunts, that suffocates. of incoming kinghood and war and mortal danger. only the hardest thing anyone on this earth will ever have to execute, yet they expect him to embody it perfectly.

aegon lets aemond hit him, belittle him, push him around. he doesn't hide his baseness from his brother. when aemond's fists pummel into his ribs, it feels like love, it must be love. aemond wouldn't be so angry if he didn't care. do you love me? if i am king i will let you slap me. if i am king i will let you hold blackfyre to my throat. if i am king i will climb on my dragon and i will not rest until you are safe and home and whole.

Apart from Jonsa, what Asoiaf pairing you find interesting. It doesn't have to be healthy or needs a lot of investment on your part like you have towards Jonsa. Any pairing that interests you in a meta way?

None of these are very inspiring to me in a meta-writing capacity (barring a specific prompt) or I would have already done it, I imagine, but I like the idea of them a lot:

I have a soft spot for Brienne and Hyle Hunt.

Garlan and Leonette.

If done right, the reunion/mutual ending of Jaime and Cersei is likely to be very moving.

If Arya was older, I would be very fond of Arya/Gendry, I imagine but for now the ages are incompatible.

Justin Massey is someone I ship with no one in particular but I love how shamelessly he is heiress-hunting.

HOTD has given me vague feelings for Alicent/Criston Cole against my will.

Asha/Alysane has nice tension.

In a purely meta way, any couple could potentially be interesting. Analysis can be very critical, or simply look at what GRRM is doing with a couple. That's very different from liking or enjoying a couple, I think.

4. What was the lack straw that made you finally block that annoying person?

I think I've blocked most jon//sa shippers. It has made my experience navigating Jon, Sansa and asoiaf tags much better. 100% recommend.

17. There should be more of this type of fic/art.

There should be more fics and art about Targaryens winning Robert's Rebellion because I want to see Dany & Jon interacting with the rest of their family.

Also, let me talk about my Stark unpopular ships which don't get enough attention in the fandom.

First of all, my girl Arya and the very cute crush Ned Deyne has on her. Arya spending time in Dorne! Boy named after her father! The rich history between the Deynes and the Starks! Oh, the possibilities.

Still, Arya's ship it's more popular than those of her brothers I'll list below.

Let's more to Jon Snow and Alys Karstark. Jon rescued her, she's totally his type and they flirted on the Wall. Again great potential for this one.

Finally, Bran and the adorable girls that are around his age. Bran x Shireen? Both don't fit westerosi ideal psychical appearance and both are so sweet kids. Father in law Stannis as a bonus xD Bran x Myrcella? They were so innocent when they met at Winterfell but if they ever met again they would be so much more mature due to all the stuff that happened to them. The deadly rivalry between their families makes it even more interesting to me. And unlike Rickon who more often appears in fanon pairings with these girls at least Bran is close to their age.

i was looking for ways to practice drawing different asoiaf characters then i saw this funny ass masterpiece by the extremely talented amuelia and the og tweet that started it all and i thought of doing it for my favorite asoiaf ships 🤣

If anyone is saying the first part they are a hypocrite, but they are only partially lying about the last part.

Aegon did not groom Helaena, their father forced them together so by default they win, however I’ve seen Helaegon stans over-inflate that couple too with notions of love. Aegon probably loved Helaena, but not as a wife.

Both ships aren’t romantic, but only one involved someone grooming their niece for a throne(and then abandoning her when he realized how hollow it all was and what he couldn’t live without the actual woman he loved romantically) while the other tried to honor his sister wife in death☕️

Hello!! What are your top 3 favorite and 3 least favorite ASOIAF ships?

I'm a basic person, I love mostly canonical and unproblematic ships.

Love:

Arya x Gendry (obv). I mean come on, If Martin didn't want me to ship them he could have done without writing all the tropes of the romance genre on them. I can't tell you it will end well, but I can tell you it will happen.

Jaime x Brienne. My first asoiaf ship. I think it's very difficult to write this kind of interaction while we can read both characters' thoughts, but it's so well crafted.

Renly x Loras. When the sun has set, no candle can replace it…

The only ships I love, but I'm sure will never happen are Aegon/young Griff x Shireen and Jon x Satin (!).

Hate:

Jon x Sansa. It wouldn't be number one if it wasn't so popular in the fandom. Plenty of characters share themes or parallels, but that doesn't mean they're going to fuck.

Jaqen x Arya. I like most Arya ships, but this one makes me want to puke. It's wrong on so many levels.

Drogo x Dany. I don't think all ships have to be romantic necessarily, but this is… (sorry George) a girl who convinces herself she's in love with her rapist because the reality is too hard to process.

The number one funniest example of people inventing bullshit reasons ships they don't like are "problematic" that I've ever seen was people calling Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister "like siblings".

Thoughts on helaegond

helaegon has so much potential, yet gets so ignored. aegon & helaena just make sense from a political perspective - here's a v good analysis on this topic (i included my own comments)

in the books they have a more fleshed out relationship, aegon gets mad at jace for dancing with her, they are known to share a bed and after her death aegon insists that people only refer to her as "Queen Helaena", alongside "Queen Alicent" since "they are the only true queens" of Westeros !! so there is love there. aegon loves all of his family i will die on this hill if i must.

the show just gave us some crumbs, as in aegon is obviously not into helaena & forced to marry her. he rejects her as he rejects all of his duties, but it's hard to say if she is just a symbol of everything he is supposed to be (The Perfect Heir TM) or if he's just not attracted to her at all (maybe both). hard to say if this is an outright rejection of the practice of targcest or if these two individuals just don't happen to mesh. if aegon had another sister, would he still refuse to marry her? we don't know at this point, since they've barely developed their relationship.

that being said. it seems to me aegon acknowledges this is not an ideal relationship for him, but he doesn't go out of his way to antagonise helaena either. this is not an aegon iv/naerys situation. on the contrary, he mostly lets her be and tries to be kinda nice to her sometimes?

he is presented as a sexual harrasser, but is obviously not sexually violent with her (complimentary medal for doing the bare minimum, i know). at dinner, there is dialogue that suggests aemond is cajoling aegon into apologising to helaena for something and aegon mentions getting her some swanky gift. he's not angry about it, he just complies. when helaena inadvertently mocks him at dinner, he does not lash out at her in any way, he's just sort of humbled at being called out (this feeds into my theory that aegon accepts violence & insults from his own family but not from other sources). he doesn't get "angry" like in the books when jace dances with her, but his face totally falls and he is mortified, like he's resigned himself to jace's insult. he turns to aemond like "can you believe this kind of shit?" idk. there's something there.

their personalities may not gel well together, but he is such a loser craving validation that i can't imagine that he wouldn't get an ego boost if he got acceptance & encouragement from his sister (he has to deserve it first ofc but he's too busy being genre-aware). god knows where they will take this dynamic in the show, but i hope they choose to build up some rapport and empathy between them, bc it's a much more interesting story than another deadbeat targ king being mean to his sister-wife
