23-292 Just the Facts #5
Today’s Mandala Message: Ask Questions This week I’m working through Principle #52 “When In Doubt, Check It Out”. I set my intention today to ponder asking more questions. From an article by Catherine Winter on AConsciousRethink.com about assumptions, she states: “We can never know what other people are thinking or feeling unless we have the courtesy to ask them. In fact, 99.9% of the time, what…

I admit I always find it funny when people whose entire business is media give on-the-record quotes that sound this much like the villain of a movie about hosting a charity talent show to save the beloved local library.
#random internet stuff#shitposting#as a matter of principle I support the success of all non-big 5 publishers that aren't truly loathsome or atypically abusive#but like lmao c'mon

look. not to be too mean on main. the rightful heir thing. if you don't care about the intricacies of property law or legal writs and just want to focus on characterization and other aspects of storytelling, fine.
but it truly does look very goofy when you start "debating" this while lacking historical context and methodological tools. sometimes a constitutional crisis (that was already resolved in the 12th century and whose results you can always look up) can't just be settled by appealing to one's anachronistic opinion and accusing those who disagree of misogyny.
there's a difference between suggesting how things should be (i.e. prescriptive, i.e. women should never inherit the throne) and analysing how things were for a myriad of socio-political reasons.
also, trust me, the Dance being fictional is not the gotcha people think it is. it's plenty obvious. i'm sorry to say but the premise is so flimsy it would never have happened like that irl.
final idea: likewise, perhaps being condescending about people who do take the time to criticise the premise is veering a little bit towards anti-intellectualism. 'idc about succession laws ergo i'm more enlightened bc i've unlocked an edgelord-y way to enjoy fiction'. a medievalesque fantasy setting is going to attract commentators who are interested in medieval history or at least aspects of it. they may find copy-paste scenarios from real history and think it interesting to compare and contrast. it's not immediately equivalent to treating aegon and rhaenyra like your ballot choices next election, and, equally, they're not discussions without merit.
comparative analysis is a transferable skill! if someone doesn't want to partake, fine, but i think this attitude of turning one's nose at it is a tad coarse. there are many fans who take the time to write informative posts and contextualise this fictionalised universe and it's a shame to automatically write-off what is ultimately a rich tradition in internet asoiaf spaces
#*people with history degrees facepalming their way through the fandom*#everyone has a pet peeve and this is mine#my other controversial opinion is that it's also silly to say it doesn't matter from a storytelling perspective as well#if your intrigue is shaky then it brings the quality of the overall story down#one principle of writing is that your world needs to have consistent internal rules no?#if these rules flip-flop from one situation to the next then that would be a flaw in the worldbuilding#and one thing about grrm's dance is that the intrigue is one of the weak points#succession for the iron throne

*crawls out of 2 yrs’ silence on mdzs* in a modern au Lan Wangji’s reliance on structure and rules could closely mirror the way some students advance immediately from bachelors to masters to phd without taking breaks because it is a “safe” route that allows them to fulfill family and societal expectations of success and intellect in a relatively familiar environment without the perceived higher risk and greater volatility of success in the workforce, particularly where there is a family business in which such education is not necessary but still rewarded. His protection of Wei Wuxian could similarly play out as him dropping out of his studies before being pulled back by his family, and his growth across the 13 yrs supported by completing his degree but shifting his dissertation focus or concentration to a less theoretical and more highly applied vein of the same field. In this AU, I—
#it’s been said before and better but it’s on my mind today#one of my pet peeves with lwj characterization is this like…#hm#overemphasis on him rejecting gusu lan and its rules and values#bc like#what the outer world largely sees of LWJ is a paragon of GL#he is very traditionally successful!#he’s *odd* bc he also cares about the common people#but he has a lot of capital (multiple dimensions!)#very few people actually know about his defense of wwx or the consequences#instead (imo) the LWJ we see post-timeskip has learned how to balance both the principle and the reality#to steal from TGCF#he’s chosen a third path#which is different from either the expected route in mdzs jianghu#OR wwx’s rejection of society for the wens#this is less the case in the end of the novel but I would argue very central to cql’s ending#and relevant in both versions#anyway#I am so full of empanadas#time to go back to work#personal#the untamed#lwj

tomgreg is not "i could fix him" nor "i could make him worse" but "i could make him feel like a real person." from both ends.
#tomgreg#there is genuine incompleteness on either end without each other#i'm thinking nrpi and the mutual obsession and being (successfully) singularly inclined toward monetary success#EXCEPT in regards to each other#greg having only the most naive aspirations until he meets tom#tom having an essentially directionless desire to be a caretaker until he meets greg#i'm thinking of that one rebvilla tg art with the caption#'doderick fell from the fantasy doggy land and became a real boy in the arms of a guy named tom'#i'm thinking of how the last time greg smokes weed onscreen has him throw it away when tom shows up#how he first does coke. an upper. onscreen directly as tom shows up#tom wakes him up and guides him#greg gives him someone to guide#they're both sponges that soak each other up bc they were sorely missing something#the ethics of their behavior are besides the point#the point is that they cease to be performative about it. tom gets less conservative greg gets less liberal#bc both were masks that weren't necessarily real#'don't be an asshole greg you don't have PRINCIPLES' <- tom accurately calling greg out for being fake#i'm thinking we don't change minds. maybe we do change minds.#once again whether it's in the direction of being 'good' or 'bad' could not be FURTHER from the point#bc the human condition does not condern those things. LOVE does not concern those things.#they just push each other in the direction of being complete people. of being fucking real#mine

23-294 Just the Facts #7
Today’s Mandala Message: Notice Your Projections This week I’m working through Principle #52 “When In Doubt, Check It Out”. I set my intention today to ponder how I project my past onto my present…with people and situations. Continuing with the article I referenced yesterday by Catherine Winter on AConsciousRethink.com about assumptions, she offers 8 ways to help us stop making assumptions.…

1. If we were meeting three years from today, what has to have happened during that three-year period for you to feel happy about your progress?
2. What are the biggest dangers you’ll have to face and deal with in order to achieve that progress?
3. What are the biggest opportunities that you have that you would need to focus on and capture to achieve those things?
4. What strengths will you need to reinforce and maximise, and what skills and resources will you need to develop that you don’t currently have in order to capture those opportunities?

powder keg (full under the cut)
#wip success story!!#for a bit there i expected it to be a wip failure but i think we turned it around boys#arcane#arcane jinx#isn't it kinda cool how vi and powder don't. have last names. do vander or silco have last names#this thing has 49 layers and 1 of them is completely unrelated#approximately 8 of them are lineart#so it took 40 layers to color this.......#most of them are hidden too it's cuz i am so indecisive and afraid of messing stuff up so i just duplicate the layers and keep going#this is not a great art philosophy but it is what it is#eyestrain#my eyes got fucking STRAINED while working on this#but i love bright colors </3#the evidence of duplicating layers is in one of my shading layers called Layer5-1-2-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-1 or something like that#i went into overdrive lowkey bc i was like this Has to be finished before arc 3 (uhh very mild act 3/trailer spoilers to follow ig)#bc i Know her look changes and god knows i was NOT gonna erase those braids i painstakingly outlined (over a year ago)#it's the principle of the thing. i basically redrew half of it anyways but only because i could not stand it if i did not#i was already feeling like euhhhhhhhhhh abt the whole composition bc when i originally drew it it was kinda half based#around her league personality#so working on it now felt like it was just. Quite ooc for our current moment in the canon timeline#well. whatever. i think she looks cool enough. character notwithstanding. i just hope she is happy after saturday </3#jinx#jinx league of legends#felt like i should tag that on bc the personality thing lol.... lol#i just went through the jinx tag and reblogged a whole stream of super sentimental and super angsty jinx stuff#and now i am posting what i post best. moderately cool poses and mildly affective expressions :)#my art

idk if it means anything really, but i think it's interesting how after all their time together as a couple in a christianity-adjacent world, lucifer and lilith only had one (1) child, and it was only 200 years ago at that
#for a show based on a religion notorious for the expectation put on women to become mothers (especially at a young age)#(and in certain extreme cases the only real role of a woman being essentially that of a breeding tool/incubator)#it's a neat detail (though quite likely unintentional) that the Ultimate 1 Most Horrible Sinner Couple betrayed heaven's rules#then went on to have a long (happy? generally successful?) relationship without needing/rushing to have children#presumably satisfied with one another rather than feeling obligated to make themselves “useful”#I feel it really highlights exactly the sort of differences that came of lilith choosing lucifer over adam#like no wonder amirite.#freedom for lilith was as small and inherent a thing as bodily autonomy (👀); as getting to have a relationship where she can be loved for#who she is instead of what services she can provide#the show obviously mentions this a lot in other ways but to me a main example of this is the childlessness in their marriage#again idk if it means much but i haven't seen this talked about much i know this specifically is not talked about in the show either#but it's a pretty obvious deviation from what christianity teaches women and what lilith would have especially known to be her role at the#beginning of humanity where they needed to do a lot of ~populating~#even nowadays the expectation for women to become wifes and be subservient to their husbands & the role of sex being purely reproductive#all that time but only 1 kid & so late too just goes to show how absent those roles + rules + expectations were once lilith rejected adam#(and therefore heaven)#which. the detail itself can be interpreted in different ways as can the reaction to this particular interpretation. but personally i'm just#happy for her that she (perhaps/presumably/temporarily) got to experience a loving relationship based on mutual respect and equality etc.#so like good for her#this doesnt really have a point i just thought it was a cool detail#rant post#shitpost#kind of#hazbin hotel#lucilith#i am not trying to generalize christianity itself here btw#and when i say extreme cases i do mean *extreme* as i know it's not reflective of the religion as a whole or it's principles#but in the hellaverse specifically it does seem like those teachings and mentalities and heavily unequal gender roles *were* meant to exist#so the specific lack of their fulfillment with lucilith seems important
