Like... there is a difference between seeing something problematic and changing it, and completely overcorrecting..stop neutralizing all of these very well written character development beats. Stop being afraid for your characters to have FLAWS that they confront/are confronted about, and overcome. STOP NEUTRALIZING CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

Sokka was sexist but it was a learned, societal view placed on him as the ONE remaining boy who was over the age of 5 in a village with no men because of a war!! That is important to his character! And he gets humbled EARLY on in the first season. He gets his ass kicked by a girl in a village run by warrior women, and his sister also never puts up with his shit.

That is part of his ARC.

Do writers not know what an arc is anymore?? Can we not have nuanced characters who start in a not perfect state and progress, unlearn and become better people by the end?? Having a character LEARN something is a part of storytelling, and part of what makes a character compelling, this is literature 101.

My god what are they going to do to Zukos arc? Is he going to still be a catty, pouty little grouch in the first season..???

okay so post epic odyssey where odysseus and Penelope have surfaced from their room finally and he and diomedes are catching up I'm imagining the conversation going something like this

i really can not stand the “fandom is so fun we’re all just projecting and making shit up” thing. because no i actually deeply admire the canon of my favorite media and all the intention and care and craft put into it. we are not the same.

An annoying part about any fandom discourse is the push to categorize characters, populations, and factions as representations of actual groups IRL. The most annoying one (to me) is insistence that a particular group is Indigenous Peoples and the other is the White Settlers.

Like a lot of people in the U.S., I'm mixed race. Many who are mixed race don't identify as such; they pick one or another. Why? Because mixed race identities are systematically ignored or erased on multiple levels of government and political influence: census records, diversity reports, financial aid qualifications, membership in political groups, etc. Choosing one identity alone is rewarded with greater voice and resources in different spheres. Acknowledging that this split isn't real is offensive to groups in power, both for the dominant hegemony of Whites and the coalitions of minority groups. Each group benefits from enforcing this exclusionary practice because it allows specific people to justify their leadership based solely on their heritage: a new aristocracy.

All this fake dichotomy nonsense in fandom is a replication of that mentality. Like, some media like The Terror really, truly are commentary on colonialism. There's no need to hide the ball about it. If your favorite media has nothing to do with conquest, exploitation of land and resources, or the subjugation of populations for the benefit of foreign powers, then it's not about colonialism. There's other themes to explore.

Everything about him is so much bigger than you and he's mean about it, so of course it's the same when it comes to his eggs

When you agree to carry them because he so sweetly asked you to carry his brood aka borderline demanded it he isn't as careful as he normally is

Normally he takes his time but this time he's rough, he used to joke - or at least you think it was a joke - that he'd break you if he actually fucked you proper, but you're starting to think that's not a joke

And when the first egg starts to make it's way down you choke because how does it feel bigger than what's inside of you already, yes the eggs are a bit wider than f/o's cock and you can feel them sliding down and when one finally lands in you it lands with what might as well be a thud, it's big, maybe around the size of your fist if you had to guess but also it's hard, the shell has no give to it like you read some having in other species that makes the process easier

Even just one has a physical weight to it that you know is going to feel weird when - if - f/o forces it past your cervix and into your womb

You don't know how long it takes before finally after what feels like hours the first egg manages to force it's way in settling and rolling in you that feels like you might as well have a stone in your stomach

But it doesn't stop there, another egg comes pushing into you with the same thunk the first one did, and another and another, and god you really should've thought to ask how many eggs where in a brood because by egg 8 your stomach is round and skin pulled painfully taut

But mercifully he finally stops, although his hands find your belly pressing on it and pushing the eggs around despite you whining for him to stop, you mutter he might hurt the babies or break the eggs being so rough and than they might not hatch

He laughs when you say something about them hatching "human's can't carry our eggs to term silly, those things filling your womb right now might as well be empty." He's always so mean; he was the one going on about making you carry them until they're ready to hatch and now that you're stuff full he's telling you nothing's actually going to come from it

The thing about Chip Zdarsky's daredevil run is that it takes inspiration from the Netflix show and forces that into the comic continuity, but it doesn't even lean into the elements I personally love about Netflix Matt?

He's not perfect, but NMCU Matt at his best is shown to be deeply compassionate and has such a rather warm demeanour to him. When he's happy (especially in college-aged flashbacks) he's really expressive. Women like him because he comes across as thoughtful, rather than being a womaniser. And there's no question as to whether he loves Elektra or not, considering he spends most of the Defenders trying to get through to her.

Not to mention that his Catholicism is deeply personal and certainly not devout. He's a person who grew up around religion and is uniquely attuned to the suffering around him, trying to work out his place in being a man of the people.

None of these traits are inherently better than 616 comic Matt, or even drastically different (although I do think they're fundamentally different characters who I like for different reasons).

But I guess my point is that... it feels like Zdarsky's Matt is based mostly off the "he's an emo Catholic who dresses like a devil to let out his anger and also sleeps with loads of women" jokes based on people's perceptions of Netflix Matt, without adapting a lot of the likeability and nuance that made me like him in the first place.
