OK, took down the local mad mob that were threatening to kill Volo, while he provided helpful commentary from the sidelines.
Thanks, bud. XD
...and then after I finished the fight, the barrels promptly exploded and Volo died.
That seems incorrect. Let's try that again. I'm assuming they set a torch under him that I had a couple turns to remove but I didn't notice.
On closer inspection, restarting the fight, I realized there's a bunch of flame underneath the cart, so yeah - getting Volo off of it is actually the top priority here. Luckily Hector has a shiny triple dash he can use to get basically anywhere in the world in one turn.
(Also remembered to have Minsc summon Boo for the first time on the repeated fight. "GO FOR THE EYES, BOO!!!!" Boo has 20 hit points and a 6-13 point melee attack which I'm pretty sure is more than Hector had at the start of the game, because Boo is actually the true hero of these games. Minsc can throw the fancy trident we got from the djinn's trick for AOE damage, and can also throw Boo for style points.)
After being freed, Volo, because he is a dumbass (affectionate), chose - out of all the directions he could run - to run ACROSS the cart and therefore spend his entire turn standing in the fire area rather than GETTING AWAY FROM THE DAMN CART. We stan his single brain cell.
But he did live and we are able to talk to him after dealing with the threat.
"Gods... I really thought I was done for. I suppose thanks are in order - again. What's an heroic story without a little risking of one's neck, eh?"
"And you know what they say - the bigger the story, the more people want to kill you for it! ^_^ "
"I'll tell you all about it. But not here. Too many eyes, ears, and weapons about. Meet me at your camp."

He trots off and Hector gives a heavy breath out and begins wiping the blood off his knuckles.
Jaheira laughs softly. "So much changes, year by year, and yet that old bag of wind is the same as ever he was."
"Perhaps he was also a statue," Minsc says brightly. "Minsc would be sorry to hear it - and Boo too - for it is a terribly itchy existence."
"No," Jaheira says with a dry grin. "I think he is like a cockroach - he does not die but merely skitters away from the light for a while. Though a cockroach, at least, does not emerge from its a hidey-hole with a new song of some unfortunate hero's sexual prowess."
Karlach groans heavily and shoves her sword into its sheathe on her back. "Do we really have to put that blowhard up again? He snores like a fucking thunderclap."
"It would be good to find out what he knows," Hector says mildly, smiling a little in spite of himself.
"Ugh. Fine. But if he starts threatening to stick something in your eye again, Hec, I'm sticking something in his."
