It’s wild because I do think work is liberating not by the terms we’ve accepted and/or had imposed on us by capitalism But participating in society to potentially defend, benefit, and contribute to the progressive way of life in ur community through your own volition That sounds like a very liberating thought to me personally. I don’t mind hearing different perspectives tho.

hm yes emduo and bedrock bros and the eggs in Space. Phil is one of the last surviving members of a fragile but technically immortal species of elytrians that is now only whispered about in fairy tales. He’s a private investigator and enforcer (space pirate and muscle) for his beloved wife’s galaxy-wide uhhh….. Independent illegal group of people dedicated to protecting order and monitoring corruption? Gang of space pirates who steal from rich people? League of assassins but with morals? Unclear what the Syndicate Is Exactly but it sure do Be. He’s the pilot for the SBI Boreas, a light cruiser with a frankly Absurd munitions outfit. (Tubbo’s his mechanic)
Techno is a member of the only recognized sentient deathworlder species, an odd mix of orc, elf, and pig features, and is by all accounts a living legend, or a living nightmare. He’s solidly twice the size of most other species, capable of surviving injuries what most would deem a death sentence, and a highly trained warrior to boot. Now, by all human accounts the texts of his people are pretty self-explanatory, (the Art of War is 89% Common Sense by volume) but in a galaxy of peaceful races on peaceful planets, it’s complex and brutal enough to be nigh-incomprehensible. He’s on a Lot of watchlists, but he’s also the like… platonic third partner in Phil and Madam Kristin, The Lady Of Death TM’s marriage??? So not a lot can be Done about him.
Tommy is a younger avian teen (distant relation to the elytrians, definitely Not Immortal) who Techno found breaking into the Boreas and decided to keep (Phil took one look and his Dad Instincts kicked in) and his life is going swimmingly until he gets Yoinked for leverage against his dads and mum. The organization who gets him runs a blood sport colosseum, and while in transit his cage was stuck next to this weird hairless thing?? Chained with like Heavy Duty restraints. Tommy doesn’t have a ton of time to bond with this Strange Thing before the hostage negotiations happen, but they do manage to exchange names and Tommy decides with his classic impulsive passion that This Thing And He Are Brothers For Life Now. then the negotiations immediately go south, there’s a bit of a standoff, and Techno ends up trading himself for Tommy, which is what the organization wanted in the first place. They run a Reeeeally expensive exotic show for super Rich Jerks in an undisclosed location and Techno is their latest attraction. They’re also painfully cocky, and will be dying with extreme prejudice the moment Mumza gets her claws in them.
So Techno gets Got and shoved in a high-security cell once they reach the colosseum, along with, surprise! This strange hairless creature with four limbs. It’s Chayanne, who is A Very Human Teenager who Did Not Want To Be Abducted By Aliens, Thank You. They’re both deathworlders, which Techno Does Not Realize until they get assigned to the same team a few weeks into the battles and watches Chay rip a bug man’s limbs off (Chay is Not having a good day. His dad (Missa) taught him self defense and was a martial artist, a butcher, and a rather morbid man, so some Relevant Knowledge and some general chillness around death is to be expected, but Not a chillness around KILLING PEOPLE FOR SPORT) Techno thinks this must be a fully grown adult whatever-it-is all the way until Chay breaks down crying and sounds Just Like a shoat (baby pig) and Techno feels the Dad Instinct rising again.
Meanwhile, Halfway Across The Galaxy: the government has been developing space flight, but are really only at the borders of our solar system when they catch some aliens in the act of Yoinking another kid, this time from an orphanage (Tallula) they don’t manage to save her, but Holy Crap ALIENS???? Missa, who saw a bit of his son’s abduction but not enough to know exactly what happened, sees the news broadcast, puts two and two together and gets plot advancement. He starts pulling strings, asking about old connections in the space force (Cosmonaut Fit Emsi, godfather to Chayanne and Missa’s college best friend, may or may not be involved in the Turning Of Blind Eyes) and manages to get access to a hanger bay with a captured alien ship in it a few months after the incident in what might be the coolest heist sequence ever not-actually-written. (It’s very cool in my head, think Oceans 11 but the majority of the qsmp cast, trust me I swear.) He launches himself right into space and proceeds to systematically work his way through spaceport after waystation after colony planet in search of The Aliens Who Steal Human Kids (Specifically My Son)
Techno is at this point playing the long game. He knows Kristin and Phil aren’t about to leave him hanging, and that they have enough firepower to burn this place to the ground, but he’s not sure when that’s gonna happen or how he’s gonna get Chay out. Meanwhile, Chay has No Idea what this strange Exceedingly Chill Pig Man has going on, but as far as he’s concerned, this is his life now. Forever. And making allies is important. They start trading languages and Techno starts teaching Chay katas (modified for the drastically different joint structure) in their free “big open space enrichment time.” (Side note: what aliens consider almost horrific cruel and unusual punishment is at worst severely unpleasant for humans. They just can’t take psychologically what humans can, so they kinda Have to treat their slaves better than we would. Doesn’t mean it’s good treatment, but it does mean Chay and Techno are both doing significantly better than they could be.)
Finally, Phil and Kristen rock up to the party incognito, dressed to the nines and attending a Big Event To Show Off Our New Deathworlders. They see Techno in the ring and have to Play It Cool, but he seems to be doing ok actually, so that’s good. Eventually the Head Honcho Man gets into a discussion with Phil right by the viewing window, so Phil has to pretend he’s fine when he sees a door open in the arena and A @:&;!ING HUMAN STEP OUT AND SQUARE OFF WITH HIS BEST FRIEND. (Shockingly, being immortal tends to inform you of such things like Secret Deathworlds and their Scary Inhabitants) Kristin is of course Immediately On The Move, but it turns out to be not necessary: Chay just kinda strolls up to Techno and gives him a side hug (bLEASE, you want me to fight my Roommate? Get out) and while Phil is laughing to himself, the Head Honcho gets maaaaad. He pulls it around though, announcing that he “already knew the two monsters had bonded the way only such vicious creatures could, and will be giving them a challenge only they could hope to face!!” And releases, like, four of the heccin Dune sand worms into the arena. Techno and Chay proceed to fight like demons while Phil and his squad take out the party and Kristen and her squad sweep the lower levels of the colosseum in an effort to keep More Worms out of the arena. Slavers die horribly. The end.
Meanwhile, halfway across the galaxy: Missa returns!! Now with Even More Rage! His ship has broken down and because he ain’t got no Space Green Card, he’s got to get it repaired at a place that’ll take anyone. Enter Tubbo Underscore, Syndicate Member and Tinkerer Extraordinaire. Tubbo takes one look at this guy and goes “yeah that’s not a normal guy there’s something Wrong here” and through a series of pointed questions (and aggressive preening by Benson, a rather horrifying eldritch duck-dog thing the size of a small horse) Missa eventually explains why he’s in space. Tubbo, having just recently repaired Philza H Minecraft’s ship on its way to wipe out a gladiator ring, puts two and two together to make more plot, explains his Theory, and decides to accompany Missa, getting them into the next Syndicate raid on this organization. They, along with an undercover agent by the code name of Boo (It’s a word in Old Enderian that means ‘Eldritch’ or ‘Unknowable.’ Missa has to choke to keep from laughing) storm a freighter and rescue a bunch of valuable slaves and also!! Sunny and Tallulah! They have different first languages, Sunny was treated Significantly Cushier by the slavers than Lulah bc she was younger and viewed a bit more like a pet than a fighter, and they haven’t really spoken to one another before the rescue, so their rough start happens at this point. Cue Missa and Tubbo # Struggling to keep these two feral children from each others throats while they keep searching (‘Chay was literally never this bloodthirsty, the heck???’ -Missa, holding two backpack leashes apart while the girls are trying to strangle each other)
Meanwhile on the Boreas: CHAY AND TOMMY REUNION POG???? Techno formally adopts Chay according to his culture (think Mandalorian, but to the left) and Chay has enough language to understand, but not enough to inquire about, yknow, whether Going Back To Earth is an option. As far as the Boreas crew know, it isn’t: Earth is a no-fly zone and Chay’s been out here for nearly a year and a half. They have no idea how they’d begin to get him home.
Then finally, on a Syndicate-owned spaceport in the middle of nowhere, Missa finds the Boreas and sees his kid across a crowded bazaar. They hug, it’s super dramatic, very tearful, (Phil and Kristen are already planning his room on the ship: if they’re gonna coparent, they’re gonna do it Right) and after a bit of waffling, both Chay and Missa decide it’s for the best if they spend some time in space before heading back to earth, what with the whole “definitely stole a star fighter and wanted by the government, the entire world knows about aliens now” bit. There is fluff. There is cultural sharing. There is hair braiding. It’s amazing.
Then comes my literal favorite space au trope Ever: a few days into the new and improved Boreas gang’s voyage, their ship is boarded by (shock, horror) a group of Human Pirates and the crew is Immediately captured. Turns out: it’s kinda hard to keep the existence of an entire galactic community from Everyone on Earth, and these are guys who, similar to Missa, yoinked a spaceship from their military and went rogue. (I’m putting Quackity here, cause I love charismatic villain Quackity and I think it works) they pirates are very VERY “humans are gonna expand to cover the universe” “might makes right” “come, join us, and together we can rule the galaxy” about it when they realiz Missa and Chay are aboard, and the Boreas crew honestly expects Missa and Chay to join them. They’re human! They speak the same language! They value the same things! Obviously they’re gonna take that way out, we wouldn’t even blame them! (Techno feels pretty betrayed but Phil/Kristen/Tommy just look resigned) Missa and Chay play along, pretend to hate their ‘alien captors,’ and arm themselves “to help them secure the ship.”
What follows is a rather emotionally charged but Very Very Cool sequence in which Missa and Chayanne use the skills they gained in their unfortunate struggles across the galaxy to Clean House, clearing their home the ship room by room until they’ve got a pile of bloodied and unconscious or dead humans and a very very shocked new family. There might be a bit more plot after this as the family settles, perhaps a sequel made of short stories, but this is generally the end.
The epilogue is five years later, when Fit Emsi, head of the new Intergalactic Human Intergalactic Relations Organization and Expansion Section (HIROES) has his monthly checkup call with Missa and Chay, who’re having a blast with Techno and Phil and Tommy traveling the universe. Fit calls them in to consult in cultural stuff during the negotiations with, yknow, the Actual Galactic Government, the one that views the Syndicate as a crime organization, but it’s pretty well known at this point that Mumza is In Charge Of Things on the Downlow, and Fit’s still Chay’s godfather for heavens sake: there’s simply nothing the government can Do about it. Tubbo has adopted Sunny and Chay took one look at Talulah and decided “Thats My Little Sister.” Phil apparently has had a crisis recently related to some kind of ancient evil ex long thought dead, but is on the road to recovery. Everyone lives happily ever after, the end.

SUMMARY: You and Dean Winchester are the top agents from Major Crimes. You’re also assigned as partners on the same case- a crime syndicate is running loose and buying out most of downtown New York. He hates you cause you hate him. You hate him cause you think he got in his position with his daddy’s influence. But this case is personal to one of you more than the other- and you may be getting too personal for comfort.
TW: Chuck. Short chapter.
Song Inspo: Feeling Good by Michael Bublé
SERIES MASTERLIST
egotism
Chuck Shurley liked to think of himself as a man of routine, a person of simple tastes despite the complicated world he occupied. Running a country wasn’t easy, but some things could be counted on to stay the same. Like breakfast. No one could mess with his breakfast.
He sat alone at the enormous dining table in his residence, wearing his favorite plaid bathrobe over a pair of faded pajama pants. A steaming mug of coffee sat beside his plate of toast, eggs, and bacon. Chuck always ate the same thing for breakfast. Not because he particularly loved it, but because it required no decision-making before the caffeine kicked in.
He reached for the toast, then paused to inspect the slight over-toasting of the edges. "Again with the burnt crusts," he muttered to himself, his eyebrows knitting together in mild disappointment. "I swear, they’re trying to ruin me one piece of toast at a time." He sighed and took a bite anyway, wincing slightly at the crunch. He'd have to have a word with the kitchen staff later. You’d think the President of the United States could get perfectly toasted bread, but no, that seemed to be asking for a miracle.
As he worked his way through the rest of his breakfast, Becky, his assistant, entered the room. Becky Rosen was efficient to a fault, carrying a clipboard like it was a weapon and wielding it with the precision of a fencing champion. She had a spark in her eyes that sometimes bordered on unsettling, but Chuck had learned to appreciate her, enthusiasm and all.
"Morning, Mr. President!" Becky said, almost too brightly, her smile like the sun peeking over the horizon. "Big day ahead! You ready to dive in?"
Chuck raised a single eyebrow at her cheerfulness, sipping his coffee. "Becky, it’s barely seven. How are you this chipper already? Did you have a breakfast of espresso beans and optimism again?"
She ignored his comment and plowed on, flipping through her clipboard with the kind of vigor reserved for game show hosts and emergency responders. "You’ve got a cabinet meeting at nine, then a briefing with the Joint Chiefs at ten-thirty. Lunch with the Belgian Prime Minister at noon—please don’t make any more jokes about waffles this time."
"Well, what else do they even do?" Chuck grumbled into his mug, muttering about syrup diplomacy. Becky gave him a look that managed to convey both exasperation and fondness.
"After that," she continued, "there’s the energy policy speech at two, then a fundraiser dinner at seven." She paused, her eyes flicking up from the clipboard to meet his. "And remember, sir, try to keep the jokes about solar panels to a minimum. Not everyone finds renewable energy as hilarious as you do."
Chuck leaned back in his chair, sighing dramatically. "It’s a crime against humanity that more people don’t appreciate my sense of humor. Do I have to wear a tie for all of this?"
"Absolutely," Becky said without missing a beat. "And don’t forget the photo op with the children’s charity this afternoon. You need to look like you care."
"Perfect," Chuck said, sarcasm dripping from his voice. "Kids. My favorite. Do they come pre-stickied, or do they just ooze jam on contact?"
Becky didn’t dignify that with a response, just handed him his schedule and turned on her heel, leaving Chuck to his now lukewarm coffee.
With breakfast done and his day outlined in painfully precise detail, Chuck made his way to his dressing room. The space was a cavernous expanse filled with suits that could have outfitted an entire department store. He stood there, hands on his hips, staring at the rows of ties like they were enemies that needed to be defeated in some twisted neckwear combat.
"Alright, which one of you will make me look like I’m competent today?" he muttered to himself. He finally settled on a navy suit and a maroon tie—classic, authoritative, but not too stuffy. As he buttoned up his crisp white shirt, he caught sight of his own reflection in the mirror. For a moment, he allowed a smirk to cross his face. "Looking good, Mr. President. Looking good."
Just as he was about to adjust his tie, his phone rang, the shrill sound cutting through the quiet of the room. Chuck’s brow furrowed as he reached for it. Very few people had this direct number, and even fewer had the gall to use it at this hour.
He glanced at the screen. The name simply read: Lucifer.
Chuck blinked, then rolled his eyes to the ceiling like he was looking for divine intervention. "Oh, great. Of course." He took a deep breath, mentally preparing himself for whatever chaos was about to unfold, then hit the answer button.
“Lucy!” Chuck said, trying to keep his voice light. “What a surprise. How’s the underworld these days? Still hot and full of despair?”
There was a pause on the other end, then a smooth voice, dripping with amused malice, responded. “Chuck, my old friend. Still trying to play the role of the charming statesman, I see. You know, you’re not fooling anyone with that tie. Maroon? Really?”
Chuck forced a laugh, tightening his grip on the phone. “What can I say? Red’s a power color, and it hides the bloodstains when things get messy. So, what can I do for you, Lucifer? It’s not every day the Prince of Darkness gives me a ring.”
Lucifer’s voice was as smooth as silk and twice as dangerous. “Oh, nothing too major. Just a little business proposition, let’s call it. Something I think you’ll find… tempting.”
Chuck’s eyes narrowed slightly, though his tone remained light. “Tempting? Lucifer, you know that’s your whole brand, right? I mean, if it didn’t come with a side of betrayal and eternal damnation, you might’ve made a great salesman.”
There was a low chuckle on the other end of the line. “Flattery will get you nowhere, Chuck. But this is strictly business. I think you’ll want to hear what I have to say.”
Chuck’s playful demeanor slipped for a moment, replaced by something sharper, more calculating. He knew that tone, knew it all too well. Whatever Lucifer was about to propose, it wasn’t going to be simple. And it certainly wasn’t going to be good.
“Well, Lucifer,” Chuck said, his voice losing its casual edge, “you’ve got my attention. What kind of deal are we talking about?”
And just like that, in the space of a breath, Chuck Shurley’s morning went from a mundane blend of burnt toast and tie dilemmas to a potential crisis involving the literal devil. He stared at his reflection in the mirror, his tie half-knotted, and muttered under his breath, "Why can’t it ever just be about waffles?"
The line crackled with a hint of static, and Lucifer’s voice dripped through the receiver, smooth and menacing. “Oh, I think you’ll find this deal quite… devilishly delightful.”
Chuck rolled his eyes again, a half-sigh escaping his lips. “Oh, good. Puns. This is going to be one of those days, isn’t it?”
And with that, he braced himself for whatever nightmare Lucifer had in store, already lamenting the loss of his predictable, if slightly burnt, breakfast routine.

Ideas for albums the Mechs could have done alongside their already existing ones
01. Cyberpunk retelling of events from "The Shahnameh" wherein King Jamshid and his Chief Engineer Mirdas create a powerful super-computer called the Zahhak to help them run their city...only for it to go crazy with power and absorb all the minds of the people into itself using a virus a la The Acheron before being defeated by the heroic hackers Kaveh and Fereydun (who are probably boyfriends in The Mechanisms Universe, because why not).
02. Film Noir retelling of the Hero Twins wherein they are detectives trying to bring down the Brotherhood of Xibalba crime syndicate society that runs their city.
03. Dickens crossover universe involving Fagin and the DeFarges as rival space pirates, Cartmanay and Twistperpip as polycules, Paul Dombey running a spaceship firm, the Dorrits having to escape from a prison planet, and Miss Havisham as a cyborg with Estella as her adopted daughter/repairwoman.
04. Steampunk crossover AU of all the Bronte works featuring Jane Eyre crushing on Helen Graham and queer tension between either Heathcliff and Rochester or between Heathcliff and Arthur Huntingdon or between Rochester and Arthur Huntingdon.
05. Retelling of a classic Shakespeare play, preferably one that hasn't already been adapted a billion times already.
06. Retelling of "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" as a space opera about a war between different planets seeking to rule over the same solar system.
07. "Journey to the West" but it's about explorers on an unknown planet.
08. Polynesiian mythology retelling wherein Maui is a biio-engineer who keeps creating whole new planets and ecosystems by accident.
09. Space opera retelling of either "The Ramayana" or "The Mahabharata".
10. Russian mythology retelling about Marya Morevna and IIvan Tsarevic facing down a Koschei the Deathless who's actually a clone of King Cole alongside one of the Bogatyrs who in this retelling is in fact a former Rose Red.
11. Retelling of "Dream of the Red Chamber" wherein the house is a virtual reality computer simulation.
12. Steampunk retelling of "Les Miserables" featuring Javert as a cyborg.
13. Retelling of "War and Peace" with a Rose Red as Napoleon and Pierre trying to shoot down King Cole.
14. Sherlock Holmes but make it Film Noir.
15. Dracula or something Dracula related.
16. Snow Queen retelling.

Happy Halloween!
“Sooooo… The three of us were planning on being aliens— urk… okay, fine, I roped them into doing this… Anyway. My interpreter at work randomly joked about us dressing up as the Little Green Men from the ‘Toy Story’ movies! And, well, here we are! Oh! But don’t use the claw to pick me up! I’ll stay where I am, thank you very much! Have a Happy Halloween, people of the internet!”
“Somehow I was roped into participating in a group costume. From time to time, silly costumes like these are cute, but it’s too damn hot to be in a full jumpsuit. Hah… as long as I have my lollies, I’ll do whatever my teammates want me to do.”
“…”
“… Shian…?”
“…”
What did you do with the rest of the lollies that were in your wagon just five minutes ago…?
“…”
“They were delicious.”
“Boo. I’m the cute-ugly little aliens from ‘Toy Story. At first, I’m when Anika brought up the idea of matching costumes, I wanted out. But then she convinced me to do it. Maybe it’s not so bad like this. Don’t I look cute? It’s gonna be… interesting to look at an LGM raiding arcades for claw machines. Let’s go, come spend Halloween with me at some of the best arcades here in Akiba.)

sneaky peeky is better than nothing
By the time Hwa and Barrett made it back to the Solar Flare, they were laughing like loons. Barrett had to drag her away from one of the xenos as she wondered if she could tame and ride it into battle.
“And I thought I was crazy!” he laughed as he slumped into a chair on the main deck.
She threw herself on the floor by his chair, holding her stomach from laughing so hard. “Come on, that was pretty awesome,” she said.
“I gotta get out there with you more often!”
“Only if you let me tame the xenos,” she answered back.
“You tame them, I’ll cook them,” he answered as he got up and headed to the galley. He returned with a couple bottles of beer and handed one to her. “I’m not getting down on the floor with you. There’s no way I’ll be able to get my butt off it again,” he said as he clinked his bottle with hers.
She was quiet for a couple minutes as she peered at him.
“What is it?” he asked.
She took a pull from her bottle, “You remind me of my brother,” she said softly, looking away.
“Oh, is he as good looking and charming as I am?” Barrett asked with his trademark grin. She looked up at him and upon seeing her face, immediately regretted his light tone. “I’m sorry. What happened?” he asked.
“He was killed when I was ten and he was twelve,” she answered after a moment. “He was…” she paused, looking down again, “he was the only family I had. We grew up…” she paused again, taking a deep breath before starting again, “let’s just say we grew up very badly.”
Barrett nodded, “I had guessed you had a rough childhood.”
She snorted derisively, “Yes, Sarah said the same thing. She said I wasn’t as clever as I thought at keeping my past secret.”
“No, it’s not that. It’s more like we all have our pasts and our own pain. And, pain recognizes pain,” he reassured her, his voice kind and gentle. “Do you want to tell me about it?”
She shook her head, “Not really. Sam knows. It’s hard to talk about.”
He nodded, “I get that, I really do. It took me years to process Ervin’s death. And some days, it still feels fresh.”
Hwa nodded, then was silent for several minutes trying to make up her mind about what she wanted to say. Being around Barrett was very different than being around Sam. He made her feel good in a different way. Like Seong did when he looked after her when their mother would disappear for days on end. He’d make her laugh, and they’d play games, and he kept her out of trouble. He was her big brother and her protector. He stood in the way when their mother went into her rages and took the beatings that were meant for her. And, once they got to the Syndicate, he still looked out after her even though he knew he didn’t have to anymore.
Something finally occurred to her in her love-starved existence: love came in many different shapes and forms. She loved Sam with every fiber of her being. For her, the sun rose and set with him. But, that didn’t preclude loving other people. In the short weeks of traveling with the rest of Constellation, as she began to feel comfortable around them, a new emotion started surfacing. She looked at Barrett and realized that in the time they traveled together, she developed similar feelings towards him that she had for her big brother. She’d never want to replace Seong, but she certainly had space for another big brother.
“I grew up in the Seokguh Syndicate on Neon,” Hwa declaimed explosively. She’d been holding her breath debating whether to tell Barrett or not. Then, it all came tumbling out. “My mother sold us when I was seven,” and she proceeded to tell him her life’s story in short, quick sentences with no embellishment. Oddly enough, it was easier to tell Barrett than telling Sam, probably because she’d done it once already. She didn’t dare look at him all the while and was silent for several seconds after.
Barrett only nodded and patted her back. “Dusty,” he said softly, “it’s OK. Really, it is.” She finally looked up at him. “It does go a long way in explaining how you were so effective at Vectera for a miner,” he mused, then gave her one of his cocky grins. “But, not as good as me.”
She chuckled softly, “You wish,” she replied back.
“Yeah, you’re right. I do wish,” Barrett nodded. “Anyway, come on and let’s make some food. I was hoping you could help me with some stuff I’m having to do with Ervin’s estate.”

I haven't shared an Exalted story here in a while, but I had a particularly smooth session recently and wanted to talk about it.
While traveling on a merchant boat from Tern to Champoor, my player characters were abruptly awoken in the dead of night by a commotion. The source of the disturbance was a strange, hauntingly beautiful flower, painted in silver and crystal, adorning the wall of the hallway. Some of the greatest minds in Creation quickly ruled out any connections to the underworld, the criminal syndicates, or Malfeas. Amid the tension, out-of-character jokes circulated about them potentially confronting the elusive street artist, Banksy.
The atmosphere turned deadly serious when the Zenith leaned in for a closer inspection. As she examined the intricate design, the flower began to siphon her essence. They went onto discover, to their collective horror, that the flower was once a person's body. Its core elements had been grotesquely separated and artfully rearranged: the silver paint was derived from calcium in its bones, and the crystals were formed from carbon.
The true terror lay in the revelation that the flower's creator, and the person's murderer, was still present. Unseen by the naked eye, these killers were a form of fae known as the Tiny Folk—wyld-based microorganisms with a deep-seated animosity towards anything larger than themselves, viewing them as tyrants. Their nature revealed both good news and bad news: the good news was that the Tiny Folk were relatively short-lived and would cease to be a threat once they could no longer agree on anything (afterall, any long-lasting consensus that would let them function like a single organism is tyranny to them). The downside, however, was that they were extremely difficult to kill, and any clumsy attempt to scrub them from the wall might inadvertently spread them throughout the ship.
There was one final, relatively minor complication but one that influenced the way the rest of this encounter went. If the Tiny Folk tried to siphon essence from an Exalt, it could result in a noticeable glow, potentially putting them on someone's radar for the duration of their time in the Dreaming Sea if one of the Solar Exalted attempted this. Fortunately, the Fire Aspect, best known for her sorcery, was also incredibly quick on her feet. Once the flower was cut from the wall, she raced down the hallway and deck (which were being kept clear by the alerted crew) before hurling it overboard. Though not before delivering a speech to the fae, declaring that their name was fitting because their ideology was small-minded, driven only by a desire to destroy what was different from them. In their final, lonely days floating on the ocean, the Tiny Folk reflected on these words, constructing tiny sculptures from sea salt before entropy finally claimed them.
There's now the question of how the Tiny Folk got onboard the ship and whose body was turned into the flower.
It was fun to menace a group of Exalts with something so innocuous as an unexplained piece of artwork and to finally use the ridiculous Tiny Folk concept that's been rattling around in my brain for a while.

Analyzing the Timeline of the Tenno Schools
-- SPOILERS AHEAD! --
There isn't a lot of concrete information that Digital Extremes has released about the Tenno Schools (or "Ways") in Warframe. Here is what I know so far (as best I can w/ help from the Warframe Wiki):
Tenno Schools are martial arts disciplines. A School instructs a Tenno in a specific style of fighting, focused on harnessing Tenno Void powers in unique ways.
There is no mechanical restriction of Warframes or weapons for any School; a disciple of any Way may use any tools at their disposal.
The five Focus Schools are: Madurai, Vazarin, Naramon, Unairu, and Zenurik. Training in these Ways unlocks new Void abilities for the Tenno, as well as improvements to pre-existing Void powers. This training also unlocks various synergies between the Tenno and their Warframe, allowing each to improve the other.
The Rough Timeline of Events Preceding the Beginning of Warframe (pre-Vor's Prize quest)
Albrecht Entradi creates the Reliquary Drive, enabling spacecraft to make faster-than-light Void Jumps to arbitrary locations in space. The player reveals this history by reaching max rank with the Necraloid Syndicate. The creation of the Reliquary Drive inspires the Orokin Empire to embark on a project to colonize the nearby Tau solar system.
The Orokin Empire send terraforming robots to the Tau System, ahead of their primary human-carrying ark: the Zariman Ten Zero.
The terraforming robots defected while terraforming the Tau System, becoming the Sentients.
The Orokin Empire develop the Warframes using the Infestation. Ballas explains in his Vitruvian records during The Sacrifice quest that he created the Warframes to fight the Sentients, because the Sentients could control the combat robots the Orokin Empire would have otherwise used to fight the Sentient invasion.
The Zariman Ten Zero fails its Void Jump catastrophically. During The War Within quest, the Grineer Queen and the player's Tenno narrate the events of the Zariman Ten Zero incident: the adults were driven violently insane, and the children killed them to survive, ultimately leaving only the children alive on the Zariman. These children, who had been changed by their exposure to the Void, are now known as the Tenno.
Margulis prevents the Orokin Empire from killing the Tenno. In The Apostasy Prologue quest, the Lotus says that Margulis worked with and studied the Tenno (likely healing their trauma from the Zariman Ten Zero incident).
Margulis was killed by Ballas. Her work with the Tenno and their void-based abilities was used to develop the Transference process.
Ballas used the Tenno and Transference to control the Warframes.
The Sentients invade the Origin System. The Tenno, Warframes, and the Lotus fought the Sentient invasion known now as the Old War.
During The Prelude To War quest we see a memory of the Old War, where the Lotus confronts Erra on Lua with six Tenno by her side. At this time, the Tenno can be seen producing Void Beams without Amps. This void attack appears to be the same Void Beam as from Transcendence (the Operator's primary attack pre-The War Within quest).
According to the Shadow Stalker's Codex entry, after the Old War had concluded and the Sentients were defeated, the Orokin Empire held a system-wide victory ceremony in honor of the Tenno. During this ceremony, the Tenno simultaneously assassinated the Orokin leadership across the Origin System, toppling the Empire.
Note that the above timeline intentionally avoids talking about the order of events surrounding the Lotus. I don't believe straightening out her complicated timeline is critically necessary for talking about the Tenno Schools.
Evidence for pre-Old War Tenno Schools
I could not find any clear textual evidence of Tenno Schools existing simultaneously with the Orokin Empire, as of 2023.
It is possible that the five Focus Schools somehow evolved from pre-existing fighting styles which pre-date the existence of the Tenno. The Dax may have a martial tradition involving five methods of combat which was passed down to the Tenno, though there is no evidence to support this. It is also possible that an Orokin-era civilization or society had a spiritual or martial tradition which centered five methods of being, although that is purely speculation.
Evidence for post-Old War Tenno Schools
This is where all of the knowledge of the Tenno Schools in Warframe comes from, as of 2023.
The Tenno Schools become available after The Second Dream quest is completed. This quest reveals that the Tenno are children with Void abilities, Operators of the Warframes and not the Warframes themselves. This revelation opens up the Tenno Schools immediately. It is unclear if the Tenno know the Ways of these Schools innately. There is no direct evidence to suggest the Tenno learn of these Schools through some off-screen method.
A player can switch between the Ways of each School at will. When a Tenno changes Ways, they lose all of the abilities granted to them from their previous Way. The only exception to this is when you "unbind" certain abilities from the School, allowing your Tenno to keep the unbound power regardless of which Way they are currently practicing.
This implies that the Schools are like martial arts schools: only a master of one style of fighting can benefit from trying to mix-and-match with other styles on the fly. That said, there is nothing stopping anyone from practicing many disciplines; just fight with discipline at a time for maximum effectiveness. Note that there is no hard evidence in the game to suggest that Tenno exclusively have Void powers from only one Focus School. It would seem that any Tenno can have powers from any School, so long as they train in the proper Ways.
Tenno Clan Dojos have many tools for combat training, and even a specific room for sparring. It is unknown if the Tenno Dojos act as a major training ground or place of learning for the Tenno Schools in-universe.
I have found no evidence for Tenno-aligned humans without Void powers practicing the Ways of the Focus Schools.
I have found no evidence to suggest that The Man In The Wall has any influence over the existence or Ways of the Tenno Schools, or any influence over the specifics of how Void powers manifest.
Conclusion
Based on the evidence I have gathered, it seems as though the Tenno Schools are a post-Orokin-Empire creation. It is unlikely that the Tenno Schools were adopted from a separate pre-existing culture. Two options for the genesis of the five Focus Schools are supported by the text:
One or several of the earliest Tenno to awaken from cryosleep were the ones responsible for creating the five Focus Schools. The Void powers, abilities, and synergies are split between the Schools because of differences in combat philosophy first and foremost. Secondarily, it may be difficult for an adolescent to manifest or control all of the Void abilities from all of the Schools at once, and separating them into smaller practices keeps things manageable.
Something inherent to the nature of the Void separates the powers and abilities of the Tenno into five groups. The philosophies and combat styles of the schools follow from how the powers cluster, or perhaps the headspace a Tenno needs to be in to access that cluster of abilities.
Nothing about the Tenno Schools prevents their use by Tenno who do not have the ability to perform Transference unassisted. In addition, a Tenno School does not require the use of an Amp. Because of these two factors, Tenno Schools could have been active during the Orokin Empire era. It's possible that the Tenno Schools originate from techniques (therapeutic or supernatural) developed by Margulis during her time working with the children of the Zariman, though there is no evidence to support this theory.
Additional thoughts under the cut!
Non-Focus Tenno Schools
While I posited that such a thing could exist, there isn't a lot of evidence for non-Focus Tenno Schools. Below is a list of things which could be or could have been Tenno Schools separate from a Focus, depending on your interpretation:
"The Old Ways": A mysterious and nondescript collection of Tenno fighting techniques which seem to date back to the time of the Orokin Empire. Teshin is fond of speaking of "the Old Ways" when training Tenno, and is likely trying to impart lost knowledge of those "Ways" onto the Tenno. The flavor text in the Nikana mentions the Old Ways. The flavor text of the Glaive also mentions "dating back to the first Tenno", connecting to the Nightwave mission "The Old Ways".
The Stalker and his Acolytes: Neither the players nor the Stalker himself is sure if the Stalker and/or his Acolytes are Tenno. The Stalker is described in his Codex entry as holding the rank of "Guardian" during the Orokin Empire, and is never identified as a Tenno or even as a Warframe. Although neither the Stalker nor his Acolytes use any void powers, if they are Tenno their general immunity to Warframe abilities and unusual powers could be indicative of a Tenno School unique to them.
Non-School Tenno Organizations
Tenno Schools are fighting disciplines. They characterize what techniques a Tenno uses to fight, but not why they fight or what causes they fight for. A Tenno Clan, for example, is not a Tenno School. The Clan is made up of many Tenno, whom may all individually practice combat styles from one or several Schools. Below is a list of things which very likely aren't Tenno Schools:
The Six Faction Syndicates: Steel Meridian, Arbiters of Hexis, Cephalon Suda, The Perrin Sequence, Red Veil, and New Loka. They may be major political or philosophical groups within modern Tenno society, and they even have their own weapons, but they do not teach combat methodology.
The "exclusive order of Tenno assassins" mentioned in the flavor text of the Karyst.

I'm doing some political fixing to my Campoestela setting...
The main thing that was bothering me is how humans fit. Since this is a setting with multiple sentient species, each with their own civilizations and cultures (because I dislike the recent trend of human-only sci-fi setting, it's an intentional retro throw). However, the main thing here that allows such a diverse setting is the presence of diplomats/traders (because no universal translator!) and standarized equipment. Where did the latter come from, though? If there are older space civilizations than humanity, it must be humans who adapt to that standard, and I'm not nearly creative enough to build an entire alien technology set. If it was humans who "created" space civilization, it would mean they're way too important in the setting and I want humans just to be one civilization out of many.
My solution is that there would be a mix of both; humans have their own set of technology but they have adopted some alien tech and customs. This also throws me back to the early history of this setting. My idea is that humanity spread on its own on the Solar System, developing some standard space technology (perhaps there are equivalents of the Soyuz running around) before they invented FTL and added other alien standards to their own technological base. So human spaceships are similar and quite compatible, but they are very different to other civilizations. FTL is a whole discussion on itself, how did things come from big slow generation ships to aircraft-sized spaceships? I'll deal with that later.
Another thing I was never happy with was with the "Confederación Esteloplatense" thing, it's an ugly name (ironically it sounds better in English, Silverstar Confederation). OF COURSE there is a Space Argentina, and more accurately they are the descendants of the generation ship Esperanza, which had a mostly Argentine crew. But I've decided that, at least loosely, Argentina is part of a larger whole that includes the whole of South America or Latin America. I'm going to call it the Cruzur Union, the Union of the Southern Cross (Cruz del Sur). Rioplatenses, or Esteloplatenses, are just one nation inside of this wider... nation.
To see it from a wider perspective now, I'm picturing humanity in Campoestela much like the Ancient Greeks and Phoenicians (the Poleis model), establishing trading posts, colonies, communities and such all over space, but these are mostly independent from each other and only organized in very loose trade leagues and cultural alliances, with exceptions, there are few truly interstellar states beyond that. This is the Poleis model I made in my Space Empires post.
Ancient Greeks poleis were sorted by dialect and cultures (Doric, Aeolic, Attican, Ionic, real stuff) and their mother cities (the metropolis. And so, the human communities, all very independent and belonging to many overlapping organizations and alliances are also loosely grouped by their origins back on Earth. I'm imagining there were a couple wars and conflicts between the Western Powers (US/Europe) and the Eastern Powers (Russia/China), with other blocs such as the Cruzur, the African Union, the Arab League, India and more eventually overtaking the two. This is in the far past by now, it's like talking about the Habsburgs in the context of the modern European Union.
So, in this context, Beto, our loveable Argentine space trucker, is from the Esperanza Federation (name pending), a loose interstellar trade alliance of the descendants of generation ship of the same name. However, this alliance itself is part of the Cruzur, the old goverment of South America which still has a deep cultural and political influence. And Beto himself considers himself Rioplatense or Argentine, depending on the context. Oh, and he is part of a spacer syndicate that might or might not be international too. And of course he does belong to a wider human civilization or cultural sphere. If this is all complicated, it's because it's supposed to be, this setting is a bit of a reaction against single-culture, single-empire civilizations in space opera.
Why am I not making it the URSAL? Because this is a retro setting in the style of space opera. In real life sooner or later, we're gonna become all Star Trek communists (this is not a joke)
It's funny that this is all just background for a space trucker and a gamer girl having silly adventures.
#cosas mias#campoestela#I'll have to look a bit more on ancient mediterrean poleis and trade to see how I can make this work

My last two members of the Crime Syndicate: The Aresian Barbarian and Sea King:
Aresian Barbarian (J'edd J'arkus): In the anti-matter universe, mars is actually known as ares. All the planets in the solar system (besides earth) have greek names instead of roman names. This means mars is actually ares, and martians are known as aresians. This is a good warning of how cruel the story of J'edd J'arkus is going to be.
On the planet ares, leadership positions are determined via trial by combat. J'edd became king solely because he had no morality. He ripped his own daughter in half to get at the throne. He stabbed the previous king and ate him alive. Name a barbaric practice, and holy emperor j'arkus has probably done it. He killed his wife, let people sexually assault his children (and then killed them), tried to kill his brother (but failed because m'as'nijan j'arkus managed to escape to earth). Emperor J'arkus was a monstrous tyrant.
But then he shot too high. Just like the saturnians on the positive matter earth, j'edd led his aresians in a conquest of the galaxy. But unlike the saturnians, his conflict failed a little bit quicker. He managed to form an alliance with the kronians (inhabitants of kronos/saturn), but an allegiance of every planet in the solar system (besides earth and aphrodite/venus), led to ares being absolutely devastated. 90% of them were wiped out. And the ones that lived (like j'edd) were taken to the planet zeus, there to be tortured by the zanes for all time.
But after many long years of torment at zanian hands, j'edd escaped. He led a violent, bloodthirsty riot (ripping heads off guards and stealing their possessions), and it gave him the perfect smokescreen under which to escape zeus. Knowing ares was now a dead planet (and that no other planet would give him amnesty for his inhumane actions), j'edd flew to earth (the only planet in the solar system he never attempted to invade before).
On earth, j'edd hid himself by using his shapeshifting powers to make himself appear to be "Jebediah Marcus", a humble politician from Washington. Jebediah Marcus became a darling of washington politics, currying favour and earning people's trust, and it was all part of a long con scheme by j'edd to allow himself to take over globe. But before he got that chance, a bunch of filthy supervillians began popping out of the woodwork! Ultraman, Owlman, Superwoman, Sea King! It was enough to drive him mad! This is his planet! His! He had half a nerve to skin them alive and burn them as trophies to his lord ares!
But then J'edd had a better thought. He should infiltrate the ranks of these other villians, and use them to facilitate the founding of an earth based empire. Once he's done that, then he'll betray them and make himself sole ruler of earth! To do this, j'edd lets himself meet with Ultraman. He introduces himself as "The Aresian Barbarian, last of my kind (even though he knows that his brother is hiding from him on earth). He spins a tale of woe, about how he was exiled from his home because he was "too authoritative". And by working his way into ultraman's ear like this, he becomes second in command of the Crime Syndicate.
After the Justice League Canada arrive on the anti-matter earth and thoroughly demoralize the Crime Syndicate, J'edd snaps. He begins secretly plotting to join kronos and quit the Crime Syndicate. And he gets his wish. When Kronos/Saturn begins assembling an army, J'edd is recruited into it's ranks. So with him, Owlman, Power Ring and Johnny Quick gone, the Crime Syndicate membership dwindles down to three.
As for what happens to J'edd: his brother m'as'nijan flees to the positive matter earth and warns the Justice League Canada of Kronos/Saturn's attack. And when it's j'edd's turn to attack the earth, martian manhunter, jemm, son of saturn, ma'alefa'ak and m'as'nijan all confront j'edd. And together, their combined might turns this aresian barbarian into a broken tyrant, to be locked away in a cold, dark dungeon for all time.
Sea King (Alistair Curry): Alistair Curry's father was a brilliant marine biologist, fired for his insane beliefs about creating merfolk through human experimentation. Desperate to prove his theories to the world, he used his young son Alistair as a living test dummy. He did horrible things to his son, all to prove his stupid research theories. For example, he made artificial gills for his son by cutting them into his son's flesh. He also performed some unethical brain surgeries to give his son the ability to telepathically communicate with fish.
Driven absolutely mad by these experiments, alistair eventually snapped and killed his own father. In the proceeding struggle, his father's underwater laboratory blew up, and it led Alistair to lose a hand and the sight in one of his eyes. But with a bloody stump for a right hand and a glassy right eye, alistair swam off to live amongst the fish in the deep ocean.
Eventually, Alistair ran into the kingdom of Atlantis. But this ocean was only big enough for one! He declared a one man war on atlantis, and used his control of the ocean creatures to massacre the entire royal family of atlantis (except for prince orm, who narrowly managed to escape). From here, he became the new king of atlantis, forcing a woman to marry him under threat of death.
Now Alistair is the Sea King, emperor of atlantis and the world's greatest pirate, a champion of the high seas. Anyone who dares to go exploring the oceans of the anti-matter earth has to answer to him, and he's not exactly friendly. Of all the crime syndicate members, he's definitely the most violent and unhinged of the whole lot (followed up narrowly by the Aresian Barbarian).
