what if we decided to sacrife our short teenage lives for one of countless dubiously meaningful battles of a war with no end in sight fought by soldiers who were otherwise literally created to be expandable all for the sake of upholding obsolete and rotten institutions who systematically disregard the health and safety of their most vulnerable members while they prop up the most ineffective leaders which leaves them ripe for exploitation and abuse by malevolent actors but we were also completely oblivious to all that and thought we were saving the galaxy. and we were both girls 😳

Y'all I can't stop turning the mean medics into Buirs and Ori'vode.
Bear knows that something’s wrong with his jetii vod’ika - something more than the scratch on her cheek she got in battle.

It’s not a deep dark ending like I’d thought it’d be
I think they could’ve taken it down a darker road and it would’ve been fantastic to spiral down, I think this end is an unexpected little treat and I’m so into it
It was unexpectedly fun in a morbid way
Fuck those guys
the generational cycles go completely unchallenged and they’re totally valid for it I support women’s wrongs and their right to live happily in isolation in a giant mansion
AroAce meets Toxic yuri meets clone selfcest and the girls win in this one

I maybe don't know if I could say The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey is objectively the Best fiction read I've done this year, but it's been my favorite. There was so much meat to this sci fi, and letting it happen in a world that mostly adheres to our current world really let us sink our teeth into the dynamic the author is presenting. The clones aren't a pressing necessity due to some huge dystopian reality of Dr. Caldwell's world. It's just scientific work she's passionate, and ruthless, about.
It's also slightly disconcerting to see a character so good at convincing herself of her justifications for the things she does. I think if I wasn't very careful about this particular dynamic in myself, it would be a life-disruptive flaw for me. I did at one time, and could be very good now, at justifying the things I do and convincing myself how I am right for the various things that I do and/or don't do in this world. I know I am not perfectly capable of leading myself off that path, but I at least have the drive to keep it in check. Watching Evelyn be forced to walk right up, nose to nose, with that flaw in herself was a great ride, and I love that I really don't feel like Gailey pulled their punches in this. In fact, the setup made me think it was going to be much twistier and darker, but by not going down that particularly thrilling path, I think they allowed for a much more interesting and internal personal struggle. And it was so, so good.
If this doesn't become classic sci fi, the kind that gets taught in school, I will be a little pissed. It's got all the great elements while feeling, at least to people named Furi who are me, like solid literature. It may come off a little hard and in the face at times, but it's done in a way that feels true to the characters and not shoehorned in. At least to me, who is, admittedly, someone who likes to put my hands on something concrete. Others might find think otherwise, but despite how occasionally over the head it will knock you, some of the reviews I've run into giving low stars seems to be from them missing the point, so uh, maybe it's not too much.
Definitely I gave it five stars.
