15 Day BL Challenge - Day 4

Day 4: Fave Ship Dynamic

Since I can't choose one favorite dynamic, I'll allow myself to write a few:

EQUALITY in a relationship will always be my top priority, which I understand as a situation where no one is exploited, or led like a child in the relationship, or dominated, even if one of them is naturally dominant. To make it more complicated, I actually like relationships in which one is clearly more dominant, for example stronger physically, or in the hierarchy, is richer, has power, BUT NOT OVER THEIR LOVED ONE, is actually even dependent on him. The point is that both have the same power over each other, are equally dependent on each other, both support each other to the best of their abilities, no one gives more or less. It is ideal when the seamingly "weaker" one has even a slight advantage in the relationship, to make it more fair. A good example of this relationship is Hannibal or Nagron 😋 There are many BL series with equal characters, most of them will appear below (but I'll start with a gif of these guys, equal in everything, and that widening of Zhou Zi Shu's eyes at the sight of Wen Ke Xing is one of the best things in BLs I've ever seen 💖)

most often, equality in a relationship goes hand in hand with my second favorite dynamic: when both are mature. I LOVE it when a couple is made up of adults, mature people who know who they are, know that they are interested in each other and the only obstacles in their relationship are external. From BL series, these are: Laws of Attraction, Manner of Death, Jun & Jun (excellent examples 10/10) as well as The Untamed, Word of Honor, KinnPorsche, 4 Minutes, Our Dating Sim, To Sir, With Love. This equality and maturity can just as well appear in series with young characters as in The On1y One

my other favorite dynamic also goes hand in hand with equality: when both are smart, they are professionals in what they do, like in The Sign, Laws of Attraction, The On1y One, Be Loved In House: I Do, Jun & Jun (see the gif above) and of course The Untamed and Word of Honor (I can't help but mention Beyond Evil, The Devil Judge, Killer and Healer, not BLs we all know better 😎)

when both are good at communication, I love it when characters TALK to each other, even when they argue, as long as they COMMUNICATE

the best and the rarest: when they trust each other and believe in each other, that the other person will handle the truth, the problems, that they will help, that TOGETHER THEY WILL DEAL with whatever life throws at them, when they talk about what's going on in their lives including the bad stuff, no noble sacrifice and keeping the loved one in the dark "for their own good". It's very possible that in all the BLs I've watched there was a couple who was honest with each other from the beginning until the end, but I can't remember one now... (Beyond Evil, Love in Translation started doing it by the end)

but I also like it when someone in the couple is unhinged, crazy, like Sahashi in Cosmetic Playlover, or a himbo like Sprite in Twins, or a golden retriever type but a real one like in Sing My Crush, especially when the other one is a bit grumpy and gloomy, like in those series, I love it!

I also like calm, stoic, solid types, at the same time totally whipped for their loved ones 🥰 such as the characters played by Noh in Nitiman and Oh! My Sunshine Night. Special mention should be made of someone similar to this type, but also noble and old-fashioned in a charming way, like San from Century of Love, and the guys from To Sir, With Love

Marcus and Fighting

Ok, I wanna talk about something real quick: where did the fandom belief that Marcus is aggressive come from?

Like he's not? The few scenes where we see him upset are scary, yes, but he never physically lashes out at any character in them. He slams his hands down on a table in the jail disownment scene, which is a common behavioral cue of frustration. And he looks mad... which makes sense because he's in jail! I don't think many other people would be that happy about that situation either. Yet he never hits the glass, threatens his kid physically, or raises his voice more than one time. Did he handle the situation well? No, but I wouldn't call that straight up aggressive.

He was upset and frustrated, so his body language said that. He's in an extremely stressful situation and is having to mentally process a lot. Everything is going to be big emotions for him, but that doesn't make him aggressive for feeling those.

And as for the bank robbing stuff? The nearby police didn't know of the crime until the alarm goes off. Most banks have a hidden button at every desk that deals with customers that alerts police silently of a robbery. The fact that the nearby police were clueless means that button was not pressed and therefore the people in the bank likely didn't see them either. They didn't hurt anyone.

And then, when they were caught by cops later in the movie? They didn't even try to run, let alone fight. Marcus, along with the others, turned himself in without any fuss. Not what you would expect if someone was a violent and aggressive criminal.

And as for in the second movie? Neither Marcus, Stan, or Barry throw the first punch. In fact, they only act defensively. They're trying to keep the guards out of the theatre. That's it. They don't go out of their way to attack Suki or Jerry when they are just standing there because they aren't posing threats to the troupe. And the gang was just defending them, not going out and picking fights.

See? Jerry was fine, despite clearly being a Crystal employee. If Marcus or any of the others had been trying to hurt people, he would have been hurt. But they left him alone.

They even wait to make sure that the guards are going to attack them and only move when they do, going by school rules of "never throw the first punch and make sure you have witnesses to prove you didn't". Technically, since they did that, they could argue self-defense.

And they did also give them the chance to just walk away as well, gently pushing Jimmy away when he tries to get in.

Sure, Marcus enjoys boxing. But that doesn't mean he's an aggressive guy. I did years of martial arts and was pretty good at it but I still flinch when I see people get paper cuts and avoid conflict like the plague. It was just a sport I liked. The same is probably true with Marcus.

Besides, we see Johnny do boxing as well and I don't think anyone could possibly ever call that ball of anxious energy stuffed inside a theatre kid's body aggressive.

Marcus is not actually committing acts of outright aggression in the two moments that he's commonly marked as being aggressive in. Instead he's upset/frustrated and protective. He never actually harms a character without an actual reason to do so, with the only reason we see being his son potentially being hurt. He's not aggressive, he's just a parent with emotions.

-2- family

In all honesty I do not have a lot in the way of headcanons about Owen's family. All I really have is that, by the time we first see him in the show, most of his family are either estranged from him or dead. He seems so isolated as a character that I can't help but see him as being mostly alone in the world except for Curt - and we all know how that turns out.

-13- ideals or philosophies

I wish I had more to say for this one. I think that, as a spy, he always had a 'trust no one' kind of mentality to some extent, but it only fully took root after the fall. He has probably never been truly honest with anyone since the fall, not even himself. And, I suppose, if you can't trust anyone, you have to make sure you put yourself in a position where no-one has the power to betray you again.

-10- posture/physicality/movement

I spent most of yesterday thinking about this one. Time for assorted thoughts.

I think that when he was younger, Owen stood with almost all of his weight on one leg, and very little on the other. Since this isn't a particularly steady stance, over time he had to deliberately develop a more even weight distribution that was more practical. After the fall, he tries to maintain this more even stance, but often ends up favouring his good leg. He's not happy about this.

Following on from this, when he isn't thinking about it, he naturally holds his head at a slight angle. He deliberately avoids doing this most of the time though. It's originally part of the same kind of thing as the lean, and becomes more persistent post-fall.

I think that overall his movement is flowy, punctuated, and theatrical. I tend to imagine him moving in arcs, lingering with an air that seems deliberate. He'll sometimes maintain a point of contact with something he is walking past (I'm thinking about tables here). In the show, his movements are very punctuated too - he talks with his hands a lot, and there's the moment where he tilts the shot glass on the table to match the beat of Tatiana's words. I see this kind of thing as being a key part of his movement, and also like the idea that he holds on to things longer than he needs to/only ceases contact with an item when necessary. I also imagine him often holding one or both arms higher than they necessarily need to be - I see him not liking having his arms just hanging loosely at his sides. This connects with his tendency to talk with his hands and add those kind of theatrical flairs to everything - it helps him think, it's fun, and it's something to do with his hands. In certain situations he does deliberately keep his arms by his sides to walk more 'normally', but when he's at ease I imagine him keeping one arm up, bent with his hand around chest level, just tapping his fingers on the pad of his thumb or fidgeting some other way.
