Drawing For Nothing is out!

Forgot to announce this here but the first ten chapters for Drawing For Nothing have been released! For those who missed the last post, this is a free, digital art book for animated films that were either canceled or bombed due to complicated issues.

Do have head cannon about erberus

This is about the real Erebus not the Shadow King:

1. This is obvious by the way he talks about her and may be consider canon, but Erebus had a massive crush on Natasia ever since they were both children.

2. Erebus' first kiss was with Natasia and they were both 12 when it happened.

2. Since the name "Erebus" is a nickname given by Natasia and not his real name, I guess that his real name is either Oliver or Thomas.

3. Erebus liked punk and rock n roll music during his teenage and young adult years.

4. He dislike or had negative opinions about Martin. His hatred of Martin grew after he found out Martin betrayed Natasia.

5. It was Erebus' idea to released and monitor Natasia as an attempt to help her until the Regents added the part that she needs to bear an heir.

6. Since I like the theory of Sel being the Shadow King's son, the real Erebus was killed around early 2001. If the theory ends up being not true then the real Erebus was killed by the Shadow King around the same time Bree was revealed to be the true Scion of Arthur.

7. Erebus (not the Shadow King) is the biologically father of Selwyn. He and Natasia had an affair while she was married to Selwyn's human father.

8. He was an orphaned and raised by a human family (a vassal family) until he went to the Merlin Academy.

With talk of a Gambit movie, I have a particular story vote:

Thick As Thieves by Chris Claremont. It's not Remy's inital origin story but I adore it. Imagine a movie with young Remy LeBeau and child Ororo Munroe.

I don't even really need the frame-by-frame story. I'd just love to see them connect. I'd love to see the action of the Thieves Guild and the Shadow King. He's very Robin Hood - centric in this story. It's a reminder to the audience of just how great of a fighter he is without his powers. He's also highly protective of little Ro the whole time which makes him such a compassionate character, even as a sassy thief. A perfect mix of action and found family.

And at the end of the story, when Ro gets her memories back, she takes him to meet the X-Men. Which is the PERFECT ending for an origin movie for any X-Man character, in my opinion.

Drawing For Nothing version 3 is officially out! This includes two new chapters, The Shadow King and Wild Life.

The Shadow King was a joint effort between Henry Selick's Cinderbiter Studios and Pixar. A stop motion feature about two brothers who discover that shadows can exist on their own, and a shadow master must arise to tame them.

Wild Life was Disney's short lived experiment into more adult animation. Had it been completed, it would've been their first computer animated film! Set in a warholian New York, Kitty Glitter, a disco diva, discovers love and empathy when attempting to gain revenge through a talking elephant. This chapter includes never before seen concept art that we've been really excited to share

The rest of the book, including the cover, has had some slight expansion and revision. Take a look!

My Legendborn Cycle Musings & Theories

May 2023 is when I first got into this series and I've been hooked ever since. I've read Legendborn and Bloodmarked at least twice and I have some thoughts about the books and series in general. So without further ado:

Spoilers ahead!

First of all, I'm glad I waited to make this post because recently more information has been revealed about the next upcoming book (Oathbound), and that instead of the series being a trilogy of books it'll be a tetralogy (4 part book series).

Oathbound

I strongly believe that the Shadow Court is definitely going to be unleashed that was part of the bargain Bree made with the Shadow King after all.

Vera’s warning to Bree at the end of Bloodmarked: “Chaos thrives on imbalance.” In Oathbound, is Bree going to become villainous or corrupted in some form? Since she doesn’t have her ancestors to balance or influence her since she closed the ancestral stream?

Since the third book is called Oathbound I wonder if this means oaths will be broken or removed. Obviously, Natasia's Kingsmage Oath to Martin Davis had to have been removed. Could the same thing happen possibly between Nick and Sel?

At the end of Bloodmarked, the main trio: Bree, Nick, and Sel have become separated. Since this is Bree's story first and foremost I think the book will still only be from Briana's point of view. I don't think we'll be getting multiple points of view. However, I'm not quite sure.

Selwyn Emrys Kane

There’s more to Selwyn Kane than meets the eye. One of the main themes in the Legendborn Cycle is ancestry and inheritance.

Theory 1: Erebus (the Shadow King) is Selwyn’s father. Erebus is described as a father-like figure towards Sel and he has a history and a clear fondness for Natasia (He knew where she was at the end of Bloodmarked). However, we know that the Order supposedly monitored Natasia closely while they ensured she gave birth to an heir. Obviously, since both her and Sel are powerful Merlins there must be more to discover about their bloodline. Also, it is mentioned how closely Sel resembles Merlin his ancestor not only in appearance but also in mannerisms. Sel is a prodigy and has the rare ability to transform into an Owl like his ancestor Merlin. Not to mention, the skill he used to craft aether constructs to hold Bree together after her injury which isn’t easy to do and most likely would’ve killed other Merlins attempting to do it.

Theory 2: Maybe Selwyn’s bloodline has ancestral ties to someone on the Shadow Court. 

Nicholas Martin Davis

He's going to be leading the faction of the Order that's still loyal to the Knights of the Round Table.

Maybe he'll continue to forge a further alliance with the Line of Morgaine. Nick will then be further exposed to how they live and maneuver outside of the Order. He is trying to find a solution to stop the Legendborn Cycle without the Scion of Arthur having to die. In Bloodmarked, he found something out but he didn't get to elaborate on it further.

In General

I think the relationship between Sel and William is underrated.

There’s still much we don’t know about Cambions and unions. So far, we know:

Full Demon + Human = Cambion

Human + Cambion = Cambion

But what about: Full Demon + Cambion = ?

Cambion + Cambion =  ?

Are these unions even possible or allowed and could they produce offspring?

On the cover of Bloodmarked, I think Bree is wearing the outfit that she wore during the Rite of Kings ceremony.

Valechaz is clearly enamored and fascinated with Bree and he's such a wildcard. Valec at times can also be hard to read. Will he be a friend or foe going forward?

This may be an unpopular opinion, but in terms of a TV series adaptation of the Legendborn Cycle, I would prefer that it be an animated TV series rather than a live-action series.

Magneto and Storm escape Overspace

In Resurrection of Magneto #3, the Adversary splits the pair up and appears to each in different faces. Overspace is a liminal magic dreamspace full of Gods, demons and horrors - The Shadow King is who appears to fuck with Mags, though he wears Xavier's face.

He really knows what buttons to push, asking Mags if Storm would have made a great Evil Mutant. He has no patience for this shit and tells him to take his loser husband's face off. Mags insists that Xavier's a good man, so the Adversary parrots his own words on good men back to him. I LOVE the retcon about the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants' name - it's ridiculous, but it makes sense and it's absolutely something Magneto would do.

Meanwhile, Annihilation is who Ororo must contend with. She refuses to engage in any way that triggers her claustrophobia, so Annihilation turns it around on her with a staggering understanding of Storm's history and character. It weaponises her 'addiction to responsibility.'

A certain section of the fanbase complains about Ororo's competence. As if in answer to that ridiculous misogyny, the Adversary sets up a verbal trap or two to bait her into fighting alone. Her hero syndrome (which most of the characters have) is deconstructed, reconstructed and affirmed - hope instead of cynicism. Not alone, never alone. Magneto takes her hand as she holds it out and together they fry the shit out of the demon - their powers interacting in a dangerous mutant circuit.

Too dangerous, it turns out, and Ororo is dying. To draw on her power in this place is to draw upon her life force. 'Go,' she tells Magneto, 'turn the key.' The way their mutant circuit works is by drawing on Ororo's energy to power up Magneto. He's always taking and she always gives. Time for something different, as they invert the circuit and Ororo draws on Magneto's boundless energy.

I don't know how the science works but this is fucking metal. The pain and power shock her back to life. The circuit that started with Magneto taking Ororo's energy without consent at the very dawn of his face turn in 1978 has come full circle. On Arakko she gave it willingly, but here it's Magneto who gives freely while Ororo accepts.

I share the sentiment that when the shadow king takes over someone, the host body’s personality still is dominant and the shadow king just influences them but I also like to think a 2000+ year old middle eastern guy chose to do a choreographed burlesque dance to Nina Simone

Chapter 2:

Clockwork Psychiatric Hospital - Present Time

Alice leaned back in the rather uncomfortable armchair. Her eyes were closed, and her long brown curls spread around her like an abstract halo. Her head was faintly leaning against the back, and gravity threatened to pull her further back.

If only those armchairs could be a tad bigger, Alice would not have to risk pulling a neck muscle as she let go.

A pair of black headphones was above her ears, music blasting directly into her mind and waking her consciousness.

Or she was about to when someone gently slapped her cheeks, the motion playful but still effective in earning her focus.

Her blue eyes opened slowly, pupils shrinking for a moment due to the bright light before the eyesight focused. Above her hovered a person, a mop of messy black hair framing a familiar face as dark brown eyes stared into her soul.

"Hey, dreamy!" the person shouted, shouting loud enough to be heard above the blasting music. Then, a pair of hands yanked the phones down, letting them hang around Alice's neck. "I didn't let you borrow them so you could fall asleep!"

Alice offered a gentle smile, not reacting to the nickname or the close proximity. "Technically, you did, or were these your words during my first days here, Lenny?"

Lenny smirked and licked her lips, enjoying this clever response. Her hands were placed on each arm of the furniture, and she hovered a little closer. The back was the only thing truly separating the two women.

"I did, but we agreed to share," she argued, glancing around before bringing her face closer. "And I didn't expect you to fall asleep to such banger songs, dreamy. You are supposed to dance, bang the drums and be one."

Alice chuckled as she arched her back, neck stretching as faces came closers to the point she could feel Lenny's breath and smell the liquorice she favoured so often.

Lenny took notice, and their minds seemed to share similar thoughts when the sound of heels against marble became rather audible.

They didn't have to look to know who it was, and with a groan, Lenny pulled back. She already had two strikes; if she got a third one, it was game over.

Not that she truly cared about the rules, but three strikes meant some "alone" time, and Lenny was in no mood to be separated from her pal, from her music and from Alice.

Alice shook her head faintly at the situation, but her smile remained. She grabbed the headphones and mouthed a 'later' to her companion before putting them on, letting her mind wander along with the music.

Only this time, she didn't travel to her little wonderland. Instead, she travelled through her own mind to recent memories and what had brought her to this hospital in the first place.

Summerland - 2 Weeks Ago

Alice was called into Melanie's office one early afternoon.

The mutant barely had to knock as she entered. The bright-coloured office was a familiar sight; one might even call it a safe place.

How many hours had she spent there? How many hours had she spent during Astral Projection, with Melanie's guiding voice helping her remain in control.

Speaking of the female telepath, she stood before the huge window, staring outside. She often did this, her mind wandering to her cryogenic frozen husband, whose mind had locked itself and him inside.

Ironically, Alice had met the said husband a few times; Oliver Bird. Yet they never talked much, for she could never follow him too far into his mind plane; instincts and years of training kept her alert.

"Alice, thank you for coming," Melanie said, hearing the door open as the mutant walked inside.

"You wanted to see me?" the young mutant asked, head faintly tilting to the side as she stood before the now-closed door.

"Yes, sit, please."

Melanie walked toward the red couch. First, the glass of whiskey was held in her hand, and ice cubes were clinking against the glass' walls. She sat on one side and waited for Alice to approach, watching the young mutant seat close by.

"What's up? You got a mission for me?" Alice questioned, finger-pushing a wild strand behind her ear.

Melanie usually summoned her alone or with Ptonomy when a job needed to be done, such as finding a mutant or gathering information.

The look the older woman gave Alice was more than enough to confirm her suspicions. She did have a mission for her.

"There has been word and power surges of a mutant. If I am correct, it might be the most powerful mutant we have ever encountered," Melanie started, carefully choosing her words.

"And you want me to go find him? Or..." Alice was uncertain where this was going, mostly because Melanie never held back.

The telepath never hesitated to describe things as they were, to be blunt, and to get straight to the point. Even during missions, she would make it clear about the dangers one should expect and ensure everyone knew what they were in for.

So, seeing her hesitating confused Alice. What could she possibly have in mind?

After a moment of silent staring, Melanie found the courage to speak again. "I need to ensure my suspicions. I need you to find out as much as possible about this mutant."

Alice arched an eyebrow. "Why do I feel there is a but here?" she questioned bluntly.

The mutant had spent almost a decade under the care of Melanie, being one of the very first mutants to join her organization and help bring others into this safe environment.

The telepath had been a motherly figure, and thus Alice had learnt to be more blunt with the older woman and loyal enough to never say No, no matter how hard or dangerous a mission was.

Which was why she wondered about the unnecessary pause.

"This person is currently in a mental hospital," Melanie finally confessed. "I need you to go undercover there as a patient."
