Animation Night 193 - Harpier cries: 'tis time! 'tis time!
Tumblr media
PREVIOUSLY, in the dark halls of ANIMATION NIGHT, you have born witness to such horrors as these...
Animation Night 25: HORROR, featuring Kakurenbo, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Birdboy: The Forgotten Children, and many episodes of Yamishibai
Animation Night 77: Once More, Halloween, featuring Blood: The Last Vampire, Seoul Station, The Wolf House, and Shoujo Tsubaki - and more Yamishibai...
Animation Night 129: Thrice the brinded cat hath mewed..., featuring Hellsing Ultimate, The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb, Mad God, Ujicha's Violence Voyager, and guess what? Yamishibai...
Animation Night 176: The Hedge-Pigge Whin'd, a rather scuffed production which, contra the writeup, ended up just showing the Darkstalkers OVA from 1997. And some Yamishibai of course.
And now, my friends, and now... the witching hour is soon to be upon us once more, and it is time we revelled in the darkness and terror, for tonight is hallow'een, easily the best festival in the western calendar.
Many thanks go to @glitch-critter and @muzothecat, who provided me some excellent suggestions for animated horror that I have yet to see. Not that reruns would be the end of the world, there's some excellent shit on the list above I would be immensely glad to see again.
Tumblr media
To begin with, we have the recently-released The Birth of Kitarō: The Mystery of GeGeGe (幾多郎誕生:ゲゲゲの謎). Which provides an excellent excuse to get into the subject of Kitarou. So let's begin our dark and sordid tale... well, it's actually a pretty positive tale, but that's not really in the spirit of things.
GeGeGe no Kitarō is a truly classic manga series dating back to the 60s, created by Shigeru Mizuki. But it's actually older still: the earliest incarnation of Kitarō is in a kamishibai performance written/illus. by Masami Itō and Keiyō Tatsumi back in 1933, called Hakaba Kitarō (Kitarō of the Graveyard). It tells the story of a ghost boy called Kitarō who lives in a graveyard; like many kamishibai it was aiming at straight up horror. Here's a board from the original (photo by translator Zack Davisson, thanks wikipedia):
Tumblr media
So, you know yōkai? You're reading this blog, so probably, but just in case, they are the various freaky spirits of Japanese folklore, from kappa and tengu to nekomata and chōchin-oiwa. And the reason why they are such a popular feature of modern popular culture (you all know what a kappa is, right?) is in large part due to this manga.
Shigeru Mizuki, born 1922, had a pretty wild life. He was drafted into the army in 1943 at age 21, and lost his left arm in a bombing the next year; during his recovery he made friends among the Tolai people of New Guinea. He came home after the war, and found work renting out an apartment building and drawing kamishibai on the side; gradually the kamishibai work took over. In 1953, his brother Sōhei moved in after being tried for war crimes (the timeline does not mention the outcome of the trial); in 1957 at age 35 he moved to drawing manga, debuting in rental manga with Rocketman.
Starting in 1960 at the behest of Mizuki's publisher, the Hakaba Kitarō manga adapted the story of the yamishibai, introducing a wider audience to ghost boy Kitarō with his floofy hair and little third eye on a stalk. It proved explosively popular (despite being at first deemed too scary for children), telling the stories of Kitarō's encounters with all kinds of yōkai. The state of English translations is a bit scattershot; some of it is available on mangadex.
Tumblr media
In 1964, at age 42, Mizuki debuted in serialised manga in Garo magazine - a name you might find familiar, the avant-garde magazine which also published authors like Suehiro Maruo (ero-guro mangaka, the author of Shoujo Tsubaki) and Hiroshi Masamura (the guy who made the cat manga we looked into on AN188). There, he rebooted the Kitarō manga, starting once again with the story of the birth of Kitarō. Before long he jumped over to the much larger Monthly Shonen Magazine, and retooled Kitarō to be more kid-oriented. From then on it's Kitarō city - and the immense success of the manga gave him the chance to regularly return to the newly combined state of Papua New Guinea.
In 1968, Kitarō arrived in animation land, one of Toei's early projects. It quickly became one of those classic famous Toei anime, you know the type, the kind of thing that every Japanese person of a certain age would have seen on TV. Mizuki himself composed the OP, and it continued to get sequels throughout the ensuing fifty years, with the most recent being in 2018. This is an old and widely beloved anime so there is a lot of it: the 1968 series accumulated 65 episodes, the third series in 1985-88 is the longest at 115, but the others are no slouch either; even the 2018 series pulled out a mighty 97.
As such, it's... perhaps a little daunting! But...
The Birth of Kitarō is a prequel to the 2018 series... and rather than being a spooky-fun kids anime, it's intended as a genuine horror story aimed at adults, presumably adults who grew up watching Kitarō, returning to the earliest Garo-era tone of the manga. Set in the 50s, the story sees salaryman Mizuki arrive in a village in pursuit of a mysterious medicine, where he finds the village ruled by an old superstitious family. Naturally, before long, murders start happening. And a mysterious white-haired man is somehow involved...
Seems like the perfect way to get into Kitarō. I missed the chance to see this film at Annecy this year, but it's already out on nyaa, so let's jump on it.
So that's our first act. What of our second?
Tumblr media
Junk Head is a stop-motion scifi film pretty much enitrely solo animated by Takehide Hori who, at age 40, heard about Makoto Shinkai's solo-animated film Voices of a Distant Star (AN44), and was inspired to spend the next seven years working on a stop-motion scifi epic of his own. It tells of a cyborg from a future where humans have lost the ability to reproduce, venturing into a strange underground realm full of freaky creatures that, I'm told, invite comparisons to the art of Giger, Bosch, Escher and Gorey, and the films of Švankmajer (whose Alice we watched on AN50), Gilliam, and the Quay Brothers. del Toro lauded it as a 'work of deranged brilliance'.
Which is to say this is exactly the kind of thing we like to show here on Animation Night. I can't believe I didn't hear of this film before. Sources are not exactly abundant, but I was able to find a hardsubbed 720p version with a few seeds on it, so that's what we'll be watching tonight.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the Brothers Quay, who enjoy a remarkably in-depth and thorough wiki page, they have yet to appear on Animation Night, and it's about time we remedied that! A pair of identical twins from the Pennsylvania who moved to the UK in 1969 to study at the RCA, they got their start in illustration before making a turn to stop motion film using bits of dolls and various other materials in the vein of Švankmajer.
They are incredibly prolific as a pair, making shorts in nearly every year from 1979 to 2021 (bar a couple of hiatuses). Most of their films are without dialogue, set instead to the music of Leszek Jankowski and a great many other other composers. They are huge book nerds too, adapting authors from Lem and Kafka to Emma Hauck; honestly there's a ton to dive into here and I will for sure be returning to these guys on a future Animation Night. Tonight, however, our pick will be Street of Crocodiles (2021), a musical piece in which a puppet walks through a desolate realm of "mechanical realities and manufactured pleasures", widely celebrated as one of their best films.
Tumblr media
Stop motion seems to be a theme tonight, huh? Somehow, stop motion is just spookier than traditional animation. That theme continues with The House, an anthology piece for Netflix depicting three different stories taking place in the same house. Animated in London, each piece brings in a different director, respectively Emme de Swaef and Marc James Roels co-directing the first, Swedish director Niki Lindroth von Bahr the second and Mexican-British actress turned director Paloma Baeza for the third.
The stories span a few hundred years, from the 1800s to a flooded post climate change future. In each case, the house is the stage for tales of obsession and misguided ambition leading to disaster, whether it should befall anthro rats, humans or anthro cats. Widely praised for its animation and general weirdness, I'm quite excited to see what this mix has in store.
And returning of course will be Yamishibai, the wonderful long-running series of ridiculous cutout-animated creepypasta horror in the vein of old-school kamishibai boards. You know we gotta. And hey, if we're feeling in a really good mood at the end of the evening, I might bring Shoujo Tsubaki out of the vaults too. We shall see.
Animation Night 193 shall begin, with its gruesome course of animated horrors, at seventh hour.... which is to say 7pm UK time, just over four hours from the writing of this post. Be there, or be forever haunted by the ghosts of frames unseen (unless you gotta go trick or treat or something, we understand). The place? Upon the heath... of twitch.tv/canmom!
Hoooohhooohohoohooohooohohoooooooooo!

A List of Stop-Motion Feature-Length Films You Probably Haven't Tried.
If you’re anything like me, stop-motion animation is something that you’re sick of hearing about, because it’s always the same fucking recommendations. I took the time to browse over Wikipedia’s “List of stop-motion films” and do what I could to create a list of stop-motion feature-length films that might be worth a watch and that you haven’t constantly heard animation brats cream themselves over. Obviously, this list is not perfect, it’s mostly based off of the films I was able to find generally high reviews for on Letterboxd, but this list will contain nothing from Aardman, nothing from Laika, nothing from Wes Anderson, Tim Burton, or Henry Selick, but will contain at least a handful of things you haven't heard constant chatter about. These films are also fully stop-motion, so nothing from Ray Harryhausen or Jan Švankmajer either. Oh, and no shorts or television, obviously.
I will go ahead and put the following eight as films that aren't as frequently referenced in "best stop-motion films of all time" articles, but will find their ways into conversations about stop-motion without much difficulty;
René Laloux's "Fantastic Planet" (1973)
Will Vinton's "The Adventures of Mark Twain" (1985)
Adam Elliot's "Mary and Max" (2009)
Charlie Kaufman & Duke Johnson "Anomalisa" (2015)
Claude Barras's "My Life as a Zucchini" (2016) [French]
Phil Tippett's "Mad God" (2021)
Dean Fleischer Camp's "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On" (2021)
Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" (2022)
If you haven't seen those eight, I'd take care of that first. Now, we hit other stuff.
Lotte Reiniger's "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" (1926) [German]
Wladyslaw Starewicz & Irene Starewicz "The Tale of the Fox" (1937) [French]
Ivo Caprino's "The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix" (1975) [Norwegian]
Piotr Kamler's "Chronopolis" (1982) [French]
Chris Taylor & Mark Hall's "The Wind in the Willows" (1983)
Dave Borthwick's "The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb" (1993)
Stanislav M. Sokolov & Derek W. Hayes's "The Miracle Maker" (2000)
Christiane Cegavske's "Blood Tea and Red String" (2006)
Jan Balej's "One Night in One City" (2007) [Czech]
Stéphane Aubier & Vincent Patar's "A Town Called Panic" (2009) [French]
Fernando Cortizo's "The Apostle" (2012) [Spanish]
Chris Sullivan's "Consuming Spirits" (2012)
Paul Cowan & Amer Shomali "The Wanted 18" (2014)
Jan Balej's "Little from the Fish Shop" (2015) [Czech]
Takahide Hori's "Junk Head" (2017) [Japanese]
Michael Mort's "Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires" (2018)
Cristóbal León & Joaquín Cociña's "The Wolf House" (2018) [Spanish]
Paloma Baeza Niki, Lindroth von Bahr, Emma De Swaef, & Marc James Roels's "The House" (2022)
That's what I've got for the time being. If you can recommend a feature-length, majority stop-motion film that's not Aardman, Laika, Wes, Burton, or Selick, I'd be more than happy to look it over and see about adding it to the list. Enjoy.

What is Pixilation?
Pixilation is a stop motion technique where live actors are used almost like a puppet, animated frame by frame sometimes along side props. This technique was used to blend animated characters and live characters in filmmaking. Some examples of this technique include ‘The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb‘
“The intention was to make a film that looked like live action but [moved] like an animation film. When successful, the technique creates a distorted realism that can very effectively be used to accentuate or exaggerate a character’s personality and presence. It was that possibility of manipulating the dramatic performance of a character that led to the use of pixilation techniques in the Tom Thumb project.”
Dave Borthwick (Bolex Brothers), The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb
The term is widely credited to Grant Munro, although some say it was Norman McLaren. either way both of these animators have made a mark in the industry and have influenced many animators and animation styles as the years have gone by.
Stop-Motion vs Pixilation
The key difference is that stop-motion animation involves models, along with sets, that are manipulated by a director/animator. Compare with pixilation, where a human being and their surroundings are manipulated, but that’s all. In both cases, everything is shot frame-by-frame, thats why i am researching this technique along side my research into stop motion as they both had influences on modern day filmmaking and animation.
Other famous examples of pixilation includes Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” music video, and the oscar nominated short fillm by PES called Fresh Guacamole.

so I’ve known for awhile that John Paul Jones did the scoring for a “Tom Thumb” movie and for some reason I was inspired to look it up today and I regret it —

I for some reason always thought it was a children’s movie and I SIMPLY couldn’t have been more wrong.

…that being said, it does not surprise me in the least that he did the music for this abomination, especially since the very next year he collared with Diamanda. And yes I think I’ll probably try to watch eventually especially since you can watch on YouTube.

“First one to make a noise loses? Seriously?”
“Yeah!”
“No!”
“I honestly thought you’d be more adventurous Tony.”
“Honey you’ll get all the adventure you want once I’m done with this project. You remember the night of four times, don’t you?”
Tony raised an eyebrow and smirked as your eyes lit up with thoughts of the night he mentioned, cheeks growing warm as your mind flooded with memories of the aforementioned night.
That night you’d lost all sense of cognition and your legs were pure jelly from being utterly fucked out.
It was never a dull moment when it came to you and Stark in the bedroom. He knew all the right ways to drive you crazy and you had come to learn to push all the right buttons to drive him insane.
“Tony come on! I know you’re up for it.”
You pointed to the half-mast erection currently staring back at you.
He glanced down at it before shaking his head and returning to the screen, soon getting engrossed in the information displayed in front of him. Eyebrows knitting together in concentration while his fingers flew over the surface, probably in search of something you didn’t care about.
You scowled for a little while, arms crossed over your chest before walking towards him with a look of determination that hid unattended lust.
Tony didn’t mind you stepping in between his legs as he leaned against the table behind, until you ghosted your fingers over the button of his denims.
Once you popped it open and undid his fly, he shot you a warning look before his phone rang, giving you time to push the jeans and his boxers down just enough to let his erection bounce free.
“You’re free to do whatever you want only if you’re prepared for the consequences sweetheart.” He warned before answering Phil Coulson’s call.
Desire bloomed deep in your belly as his words sent tingles down your spine, knowing the punishment would either be really good or really bad, depending on Tony’s mood. But you were willing to take the risk, it was always worth it in the end.
Shrugging, you dropped down to your knees, his semi-erect cock waiting for your ministrations as you eyed it before gazing up at Tony through your eyelashes innocently.
He was deep in conversation on the phone but the tight grip of his free hand on the edge of the counter and tapping of fingers against the surface indicated he was waiting for you to make your move.
Tony exhaled a breath he was unconsciously holding as your hand wrapped around his length. Taking your time with it, your hand lazily stroked his cock, thumb brushing over the tip every now and then.
“Please I understand Agent, don’t bore me with those unnecessary details..oh!”
Glancing down, he suppressed the rest of his reaction as your tongue joined the party. Small kitten licks over the tip before you drew a strip all the way to the base, all the while watching his demeanour change from composed to flustered.
You took him in your mouth and began swirling your tongue around his length, smirking when he faltered and brought his hand down to move your hair out of your face.
“I’m going over the details n-now. Oh yes—yes I’ll call Fury once I’m—I’m almost done here.”
Tony didn’t wait for Coulson to answer before he cut the call and practically threw the phone away. Letting out a groan, he jerked his hips forward, pushing himself deeper in your mouth as he grabbed you by your hair roughly, guiding your mouth over his cock.
“You’re in so much trouble baby...”
You simply hummed in response, continuing to finish him off as you increased your speed, feeling him twitch against your lips already. The little grunts Tony uttered spurred you on to bring him closer and closer to climax. Your own arousal had turned your panties moist as you watched his lust-blown eyes shut and bite his lip.
“Ah shit! You want me to cum in your mouth?”
You nodded eagerly as Tony’s hips jolted forward and he cursed out loud before shooting spurts of cum down your throat, face contorted in pleasure as he emptied himself, the warm salty liquid travelling down your throat.
He grabbed you by the back of your neck, making you stand before crashing his lips to yours, tasting himself as you deepened the kiss. You moved your clothed core over his softened cock to get some friction, gaining another groan from Tony who felt how moist you were.
“So wet my dirty girl. Will you give me an hour? I promise I’ll make it worth it.” Tony whispered softly, grabbed your hips to stop your grinding. Reluctant to let you go but the urgency with which Phil had called left him with no other choice than to make you wait.
“Fine. But if you’re late…”
“Trust me babe. I’ll be there sooner than you think.”
“Whatever.” He pecked your pouted lips one last time as you pulled his pants back up, turning to walk upstairs to your shared bedroom.
“Don’t touch yourself.”
“You’re in no position to make demands Stark.”
“Am I not?” Even with your back to him, you could sense he was giving you ‘the look’. The one that screamed ‘no matter what, I’m always in charge’. The man was really going to be the death of you some day.
“Ugh. Fine. Hurry up.”
.
“Okay so we need to establish some ground rules first.”
Your eyes snapped up from the book you were pretending to read as Tony swung the bedroom door and got in, locking it before sliding in next to you, resting his back against the headboard.
You were celebrating your victory on the inside because just minutes ago he’d made fun of you for coming up with this game, only to now come up with modifications for the same.
Like a good girl you had behaved, controlled the urge to bring yourself to an orgasm after that little session downstairs. You were still wet, which meant he already had more chances of winning at your game.
This was a bad idea. Why hadn’t you thought this through?
“Hon?”
“Huh?”
“The rules?”
Mentally shaking yourself for zoning out, you sat up straight and faced him.
“Alright. Whines are allowed. Moans aren’t.”
“Fair enough.”
“No oral sex.”
“Not acceptable. You know I owe you for that amazing blow-job. Come on now..”
“Fine. But no fingering.”
Tony made a non-committal huff but agreed, knowing how much his fingers spurred you on.
You went back and forth discussing, rejecting and accepting the terms and conditions as if it were a legit deal.
Soon after you shook on it, there was a switch in the air and neither of you felt the need to say much else except get on with the game.
Climbing in Tony’s lap, you cupped the sides of his face and pressed your lips to his. Softly grazing against each other at first while you fingers teased the base of his neck.
He carded his hands through your hair before pulling you against his chest, hands now splayed across your back as he slanted his mouth over yours and deepened the kiss.
Maneuvering a little so his legs straightened out on the bed, Tony heard a tiny sigh escape your lips as your aroused core met with his growing bulge. Keeping those noises that threatened to leave your mouth turned out to be harder than you had both imagined. You two were quite vocal when it came to sex.
It was difficult, but all the more exciting.
After a while, the make-out session turned out to be insufficient and Tony had you on your back, your clothes removed and thrown carelessly somewhere behind as he settled between your legs.
You had to bite back a moan as Tony’s lips travelled down your neck, littering tiny kisses all over the skin before he found that junction where your neck met your shoulder, the pulse point which he so generously marked a spot on, sure to leave a purple bruise in its place. On cue, your head moved aside to grant him more access as your breaths turned to pants, finding it hard not to think about his bulge that was rubbing so deliciously against your heated core in slow but deliberate thrusts.
You had to push him away to make sure you didn’t lose so soon, that sure earned a chuckle from the genius. Moving further south, he latched onto one of your nipples and flicked his tongue along the bud all the while massaging and kneading the other in his hand. A sigh had involuntarily slipped out, it wasn’t breaking any rules but it sure made Tony gaze up with lust-blown eyes as a smirk appeared on that handsome face.
Trailing kisses along your navel, he reached between your legs and stopped. You shot him a warning look as you sat up on your elbows when his fingers teased along your wet folds, causing him to throw his hands up in surrender before diving in face first into your pussy.
Closing a hand over your mouth, you let your head fall back onto the pillows as Tony licked a fat strip along your wetness, his nose brushing against your bundle of nerves. It didn’t take long for you to feel your heartbeat on your throbbing clit, Tony leaving no stone unturned to make sure you were a needy mess below him.
“What was that baby girl?” He purred, facial hair glazed with your juices when he emerged, giving you a shit-eating grin after you shook your head.
You were so close.
Flipping you on your stomach, you heard him unbutton his jeans and drop them in a low thud on the ground. His hands pulled your ass up in the air, urging the cheeks apart before his cock met your entrance, gathering your wetness, your pussy aching for release at this point.
“Tony..”
“Giving up already?”
Instead of answering, you reached behind, grabbed his cock in your hand and lined him up at your entrance before pushing your hips back. Both of you swallowed your groans as he bottomed out, stretching your walls to the fullest before pulling all the way out and thrusting in.
Your knuckles turned white from gripping the sheets as you were almost ready to give up and accept defeat, until you felt his cock twitch inside you, a sign Tony wasn’t too far along from doing the same either.
Your walls clenched around his cock deliberately, hugging it in their wet warmth and eliciting an involuntary groan from the man.
“What was that honey?”
You teased, repeating the action only to have Tony pull out suddenly, turn you around once more and pull your legs over his shoulder before entering you again.
“You fucking tease..”
“You’re the one to talk. Now shut up and fuck me.”
Snapping his hips to yours at a furious pace, Tony gripped your legs roughly and bit your ankle. The silly little game long forgotten, you let out a pornographic moan as you felt the muscles in your belly contract, thighs tremble and mind turn into a fuzzy blur.
“Cum with me Tony..” you begged as he let go of your legs and buried his face in your neck, a hand snaking downward to rub your oversensitive clit.
“Do that thing again.”
His urgent whisper came out muffled by your hair but you knew what he was talking about. You granted his wish by pulling on his cock with your walls and felt his hips lose their rhythm. He came loud and hard, spilling inside you in spurts triggering your own orgasm as you cried out, digging your nails in his back as you shuddered.
Once you felt yourself float back down to reality, you brought your hands to caress Tony’s hair while he chuckled against the skin on your neck, repeatedly kissing you over there.
“It’s a draw then?” He mumbled.
“Yep.”
“You want a rematch?”
“Definitely.”

Movie Recommendations #1
You might know movies from this already or you might not, but thought I would share.
This will consist of fantasy and surreal films I enjoy that are not as mainstream or well known.
1) Jack The Giant Killer (1962)
2) Tom Thumb (1958)
3) The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad (1958)
4) The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)
5) Ladyhawke (1985)
6) Jason And The Argonauts (1965)
7) The Fall (2006)
8) The Secret Of Moonacre (2008)
9) Mirror Mask (2005)
10) What Dreams May Come (1998)
11) The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
12) Tuck Everlasting (2002)
13) Tall Tale (1995)
14) The Tale Of Despereaux (2008)
15) The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
First of all, many thanks for taking the time to send me an ask and a list of some of the films that you personally enjoy... I love to discuss film, amongst other things, so this is much appreciated, and I have done my best to go through them, commenting on each one, in turn.
1) Jack The Giant Killer (1962)
One I watched quite a bit growing up as re-runs on TV... we holidayed quite a bit in Cornwall when I was younger too, and it always reminded me of this film... my brother and I used to act out scenes from it (I was the giant and would always be slain, of course, haha)
2) Tom Thumb (1958)
I can only remember seeing this one a couple of times, I think... it's one they either didn't re-run too much, or I just missed it, but I can recall it being quite fun, especially the bumbling villains... I remember thinking of it when I first watched Twin Peaks years later and noticed Russ Tamblyn, who played Tom, as Dr. Jacoby.
3) The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad (1958)
Another that I watched quite a bit growing up... they always seemed to air a lot of these classic fantasy adventure type films on TV during the weekends in the '90s, so there's a bit of nostalgia attached to this one for me, and it is a film that I own.
4) The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)
I've never seen this... I'm not generally into Martial Arts films, although do like some of the Shaw Bros. stuff from the '70s and '80s, but admittedly their more horror themed output... this looks quite interesting from the trailer though.
5) Ladyhawke (1985)
I completely missed this on re-runs and rentals, and streaming during my childhood and teen years... I only first watched it about 5 or so years ago... it was an ex's favourite film when she was young, and she was appalled that I hadn't seen it, so we rectified that... I enjoyed it, but can't help thinking I would have probably enjoyed it more if I had grown up with it... nostalgia often has a lot to answer for in these respects, after all...
6) Jason And The Argonauts (1965)
Yet another one that I watched quite a bit growing up... Harryhausen's effects always mesmerised me, he was a true visual pioneer, and they added such an essence of wonder to the proceedings... another one I own.
7) The Fall (2006)
Tarsem Singh is such a visually creative film maker... I was first introduced to his work in The Cell (2000), which was an incredible blend of sumptuous and beautifully macabre visuals... the film itself, outside of the visuals, was not too good, but he had caught my eye, and it later led me to seek out The Fall... I wasn't disappointed on the visual stakes again, but this time there was a little more substance behind the gorgeous visuals as well... it is a film that I own.
8) The Secret Of Moonacre (2008)
I have never seen this nor read the book it has been adapted from... it sounds intriguing though, plus has Tim Curry in it, which is always a bonus.
9) Mirror Mask (2005)
A visual feast, but I found the story a little lacking... sort of a mesh of Alice in Wonderland meets Labyrinth... by mentioning it, you've got me wanting to revisit it now though to see if my opinion has changed.
10) What Dreams May Come (1998)
I can't say I've seen this more than once... I can't remember too much about it either, other than it was a little too saccharine and emotionally manipulative, as these sorts of films tend to be... I was a stubbornly devout atheist when it was released too, so that probably didn't help me take to this one either... I'm still an atheist, but am much more open minded,  and susceptible to explore different ideas and ways of thinking... and I like to do so too... testing what you believe, exploring, experimenting, and challenging yourself and what you believe is real, or not, is very important, I feel...
11) The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
I only saw this one pretty recently, within the past couple of years... I was convinced that I wouldn't like it, what with having grown up reading the Roald Dahl books (I've always been disappointed in the film adaptations of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), but I ended up enjoying it, like the storybook had come to life on screen.
12) Tuck Everlasting (2002)
Not only have I not seen this one, I have never even heard of it! I must remedy this, hopefully in the not too distant future.
13) Tall Tale (1995)
I've never seen this! It sounds like the kind of thing I would have enjoyed watching growing up, too...
14) The Tale Of Despereaux (2008)
Another one I haven't seen, although I am aware of it... it's not something I would have necessarily considered watching, but the fact you've recommended it to me might sway that... I'll generally watch anything, at least once, and I enjoy stepping out of my various comfort zones to experience new things when the opportunity arises...
15) The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
I watched this one at the cinema... I'm a big fan of Gilliam, so was looking forward to it, especially as it had been delayed from its original release due to Heath Ledger's unfortunate passing at the time, and had gone through some production / story changes because of this... I recall not enjoying it as much as I had hoped... I'm not sure how much of this was due to the edits, and whether Gilliam's originally intended version would have been better, but it is one that I want to reappraise, as I haven't watched it again since that original big screen viewing.
Thank you again so much for sharing some of your favourite films, and for the recommendations! ♡

Main Masterlist // Marvel Masterlist
You shift almost soundlessly, trying your hardest not to rub the chair and wake Tom. Your body feels stiff, it yearns for your shared bed. You can’t remember the last time you’ve slept soundly. Lately, you’ve been living your lives trapped within four walls of the hospital room. He looks peaceful though. You try to ignore the tubes that plague his arm. Tom made a joke a few weeks ago saying they’re the only thing giving him life. You wish that wasn’t true.
From beyond the door, Dr. Cox almost enters before you hold up a hand to stop her. Tom hasn’t been sleeping well either, it’d be a shame for him to wake up now. You stand on wobbly legs and make your way towards her. He doesn’t even stir as you close the door.
“How’s he feeling?” She asks, tucking the clipboard under her arm.
“Sick,” You sigh. She only purses her lips. You attempt to comb through the tangles and knots in your hair out of awkwardness but eventually give up. You know she’s seen much worse than a young woman with unkept hair and exhausted eyes. “How did his tests go?” She doesn’t need to answer; her frown says enough. “How long do I have left?” You’re almost disgusted by the meekness of your voice and that even in the time of his passing you’re making it about yourself.
“I don’t think he’ll make it through the night.” Her words alone make you dizzy, your legs more unsteady than before. You have to lean against the wall to stop yourself from collapsing. “Is there anyone else I can call for you? You shouldn’t be alone.”
“I’m not alone. Not yet.” She reaches out and squeezes your shoulder before turning back down the hallway, presumably to check in on her other patients. You can only hope she can give them better news.
You don’t need to close the door quietly, but you do anyways. Tom’s already awake and staring at the ceiling, you asked earlier if he wanted to watch something on the small TV, but he refused, you’ve both grown sick of the few channels the hospital provides. You’ve watched at least half a season of soap opera reruns; you’d give anything to go home and watch a football game with him. Two months ago, nobody in the world could’ve paid you enough money to sit through one.
“What’d she have to say this time?” His voice is hoarse and filled with exhaustion. Looking at him now, you notice things you’ve missed while being here. Tom’s skin has become ghostly, his normally vibrant brown eyes have dulled, and his body has lost all muscle definition. You feel sick just glancing at all the scabs that litter his arm.
“What she always does, still looking for progression. The nurse will be back in a few hours to take some more blood for your tests.” You sigh, letting yourself pretend those were her words, that the conversation wasn’t to prepare me for a goodbye. You’re not sure if it’s to protect him or you.
“You’ve never been a good liar,” His lips quirk into a faint smile, “There aren’t going to be any more tests, are there?” All at once, it feels as though all the wind has been knocked from your body and you’ll never be able to breathe right again. You shake your head, eyes dropping to the floor, unable to hold his gaze any longer.
Slowly, Tom reaches for you, scooting to the edge of his bed giving you just enough room to slide in beside him. You’ve never had to worry about hurting him, he’s always towered above you and could’ve easily thrown you over his shoulder without a second thought. But that was then, and now you can only focus on trying not to crush his frail body.
He traces lazy circles on your shoulder as you nuzzle closer to him, he sighs in what sounds like contentment. You toy with the cheap fabric of the hospital gown as the two of you lay in silence. “I’m tired,” Tom whispers.
You wish you could talk about something the way you used to. His stories from set or the secrets he wasn’t legally allowed to share with anyone, but he always made an exception for you. You’d listen to him talk for hours, now, you’re lucky if he’s awake for more than one. Your old routine feels like a lifetime ago when really, it’s only been a few excruciating weeks.
Tom opens his mouth to say something more before he erupts into coughs. You try to rub soothing circles against his chest, to do your best to offer comfort or relieve any pain the best way you can. You can tell he’s in pain despite the drugs pumping through his body and the smile he always adorns. He’s trying his best to make it hurt less for you even when he’s the one dying.
When the fit passes, he settles back into his rightful place holding you a little closer and just a little tighter than before.
You find yourself memorizing anything you can. From the rhythm of his heartbeat to the way he traces three circles on your skin before reversing his thumb’s direction. A week ago, you would’ve told him to keep fighting, to trust the doctors, that everything would be okay. But you know he’s tired, you also know the only reason he’s still holding on is because of you.
“You can sleep now,” You whisper, he doesn’t say anything back, you’re almost certain he didn’t hear your words.
“I won’t wake up.”
“I know,” You nod against his chest, “I know and that’s okay.”
It doesn’t take long for his breathing to slow and become uneven, it almost feels like you’re back at home, like he’s had a long day and happened to fall asleep before you did. He stopped drawing circles but never let go of your hand. You didn’t need the machines to tell you when his heart stopped beating, you could hear it for yourself.
You’re left alone in a world that should’ve been full of so much more. So many moments you’ll never get to experience, adventures that will never be taken, sights that will never be seen, songs that you won’t get to hear him sing. The moment he slipped away, you knew that you did too.
