THURSDAY HERO: Helmut Kleinicke

Helmut Kleinicke was a German engineer who supervised construction projects at Auschwitz while saving Jews from the gas chambers.

Born in 1907, Helmut grew up in the forest of Lower Saxony – literally. His parents were forest rangers. Helmut studied civil engineering and joined the Nazi party in 1933. In 1941, right after getting married, Helmut was hired to join the team planning the construction of Auschwitz concentration camp. He moved to Chrzanow, Poland to work on the project.

In Chrzanow, Helmut was ordered to select local Jews who were young and healthy to work on the construction site. He treated them well and didn’t allow the SS to harass them. One survivor remembered, “Those of us who worked for Kleinicke were like VIPs. We had a certificate that we worked for him, and that was our insurance policy.”

When he heard about plans to round up local Jews, Helmut located every person on the list and warned them they were about to be arrested. Then he transported many of them to the border and helped them escape. Others he hid in his attic and basement. Helmut didn’t keep track of the Jews he saved, but it’s estimated there were hundreds.

By late 1943, the higher-ups at Auschwitz noticed that Jews who interacted with Helmut kept disappearing. He was removed from his job and drafted to an artillery unit, then sent to the front lines. When Germany surrendered in 1945, Helmut was arrested by the British because of his membership in the Nazi party. While he was in prison, Jews he had saved submitted affidavits testifying that he had rescued them “without regard to his person” and that many Jews owed their lives to Helmut Kleinicke. He was exonerated in 1949. For the rest of his life, he did not talk about his wartime activities. He told his daughter only that he’d saved some Jews, but wished he’d saved more. He never considered himself a hero. In 1979, the American miniseries “Holocaust” aired on German TV. Helmut watched it and was deeply shaken. Three days after that he had a stroke from which he never recovered. He died a few months later.

Helmut’s heroism was unknown until recently. In a 2015 documentary, Josef Konigsberg, an Auschwitz survivor, testified that Helmut Kleinicke saved his life by pulling him out of a line of people being deported. This interview, and corroborating evidence that Helmut had saved many Jewish lives, led to Helmut Kleinicke being honored posthumously as Righteous Among the Nations by Israeli Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem. The ceremony was held at the Israeli Embassy in Berlin, and was attended by Helmut’s daughter Juta Scheffzek. Also in attendance was Josef Konigsberg, who told his story of being rescued by Helmut. “I owe him my life,” said Josef, describing how Helmut rescued him from a transport line to Auschwitz: “My mother came and begged him to rescue me. Kleinicke grabbed me and said that I was his best worker.” Josef’s mother and sister were not so lucky and both died in the gas chamber. Crying as he addressed Juta, Josef said, “This is one of the most beautiful days of my life. Thank you, thank you.”

Juta was deeply touched. “It verified what my father said to me in very few words – and I never knew if he had been telling the truth.” She told the Times of Israel after the ceremony, “It was a very long and emotional search to discover the truth about my father, and I hope that people in America, the UK and Israel will hear about it.”

Israeli Ambassador to Germany Jeremy Issacharoff, who hosted the event honoring Helmut, commented, “When you’re in the context of Germany, you’re never free of the historical dimension of the Holocaust, and it’s a very heavy burden to bear for the Germans, and also obviously for the Jewish people, and it’s always there. And I think it’s really important that this type of ceremony also recognizes that there were a few really important people who did the right thing. And that, to me, is the main message that should come out of this.”

For saving Jews while his peers were killing them, we honor Helmut Kleinicke as this week’s Thursday Hero.

‪Sally Ann McNelly, 18, and Shane Paul Stewart, 17, were a teenage couple from San Angelo, Texas. On the 4th of July, 1988, they attended a fireworks display at Lake Nasworhy. The following morning, a lake ranger discovered Stewart’s abandoned Chevrolet Cameo parked near the O.C. Fisher Reservoir several miles from Lake Nasworhy. With the couple nowhere to be found, they were reported missing.‬ ‪

‬ ‪Four months later, hunters stumbled across skeletal remains in a pasture south of Twin Buttes. The remains were identified as Sally and Shane and an autopsy concluded that they had been killed by shotgun blasts to the head. At a time when satanic panic was rife, rumours soon started to circulate that they had been murdered by a satanic cult that they were both involved in. According to friends, Sally and Shane attended parities with occult activities. It was alleged that the couple were involved in a satanic cult. Years later, investigators would rule the satanic cult theory out.‬ ‪

‬ The case eventually went cold but in 2017, there was a breakthrough when John Cyrus Gilbreath was pulled over on suspicion of possessing marijuana in Texas. When police searched his home, they found three Audi tapes with “SS” on them, a lock of hair, blood and a fingernail which could link him to the double murder. He has since been named as a person of interest in the cold case.‬

The new promo image has finally made me confident enough in a theory I've had for awhile to officially call my shot.

Never Stop Blowing Up is a riff on Power Rangers/Super Sentai.

I originally came up with this theory because, aside from knowing they already did Ultramechatron Team Go!, the title could be a reference to PR/SS's penchant for gratuitous explosions.

I'm now solidly convinced by the fact that the table seems to be the controls of some kinna machine akin the TARDIS control console, with buttons for each player. Furthermore, the GM screen has a skull-faced mountain in the middle of a city - a very PR/SS visual.

It could be an UTG! sequel because it ended on a cliffhanger, but maybe not.

PRICING:

So, 500 words would be $15.

You give me a ballpark of the length you want. So, if you’re willing to spend between $20 and $25, the story will be between 666 and 833 words.

I’ll round down to the nearest $0.10. So if the finished product is 526 words, I’ll report it as being $15.70, rather than $15.78.

GUIDELINES:

500-word minimum

You don’t need to supply a full outline, but you do need to have some idea of what you want to happen in the story. The longer the story, the more detail I’ll need. Asking ab storyshift here, I think it’s such a cool idea and you seem to have visualized the settings very well!!! Do you have any specific ideas for the designs of the characters, or even just things that you would/wouldn’t keep from their original designs?

Ceroba

When it comes to the Empress herself, she wears a black mourning Kimono, which she's had on since Kanako's passing. She did wear a lot more colorful outfits before that, however, and she did wear her signature red and white yukata in more casual settings.

During her boss fight (she's fought on all three routes), she trades it out for a set of Samurai-style armor (Undyne and the rest of the Honor Guard wear similar outfits, albeit not as fancy as the Empress's)

Along with that, she weilds a naginata, which I thought would be a good balance between her canonical staff and Asgore's trident.

Chujin

Chujin is roughly the same when out in the Remnants, wearing his trademark green kimono. At home, he's got the whole divorce fit. Bathrobe, PJ pants, slippers, ect. He's taking care of himself, of course, he's just not super active these days. During his fight, he wears a gauntlet-based device (yes, based off of the Ben 10 Omnitrix) that amplifies his lightning attacks.

Starlo (and the Feisty Five in general)

When it comes to the Royal Rangers, I was thinking of having them wear something along the lines of the NCR Veteran Ranger armor from New Vegas, the coat over armor kinda thing.

While they are a bit more uniform in Sequence Shift, they all wear custom elements with their armor sets. For example, Starlo still wears his poncho, Ed ripped off the sleeves of his outfit, Ace and Mooch still have their scarves, all of 'em keep their canon hats, ect.

They also all have different outfits which they wear off-duty (and during their reunion), but we only got Moray so far: they wear a zipperless hoodie (with the hood up) and jeans. My BF really wanted to see Moray in a hoodie so there, hehe. Also, Mooch dual wields a dagger and sawed-off shotgun in this AU (you'll only see the later on a Vengeance run tho).

Martlet

I don't have any photos of it, but since Martlet's more of a hand-on engineering scientist, she wears more of a mechanic outfit than. Something sturdy and protect, since we all know this girl failure is very much prone to hurting herself and that isn't any different in SS. And goggles, those are important, too. Also, since I am very much a fan of the amputee Martlet headcanon, she's one here, too. She's got a set of fancy metal prosthetic legs that she built with the help of Chujin.

Axis

Axis's base form is pretty identical to how he is in canon. His EX form is where it gets a bit different. My boyfriend being the robot nerd he is, took a bit of Gundam inspiration, as well as somewhat basing it off of Mic Sounders from “king of the braves gao gai gar” (transforming from a cutesy robot into a more proper humanoid robot).

His NEO form (which may or may not be a proper boss fight) is gonna be based off a high-end Gundam or Armored Core, but we don't have any specific inspiration just yet.

Kanako

Kanako doesn't have any changes at first. While she does have some major differences as Iris (her Flowey Form) we're still working on that. However, we do have ideas for her Pacifist route encounter, where she emerges as the Liberator of Monsterkind (her version of Asriel's God of Hyperdeath). She pulls up in a Tokusatsu-style superhero form, with a purposefully overdesigned and cluttered look that only a child absolutely would think is awesome.

And that's it for the main cast. I don't think Clover needs an outfit change, but I might add a few knick-knacks and accessories that they pick up along their journey. I don't think Dalv needs any major changes either. If there's any other characters you wanna know about, do lemme know! Also, I'm not an artist, but if anyone wants to take a crack at some SS designs, feel free to hit me up!

(I'll get hate for this and I'm scared, so here goes. In case you're wondering about the boy in red hoodie with an earring on the right, this is my Jungle Fury SS OC named Kenta Nishina (yeah, laugh at me because I like making Power Rangers OCs and names. Doing my best to be creative).)

One of my mutuals know about it so this is my first time sharing this art piece. And if you're wondering why Sakura and Sasuke from the Naruto series are there, they're my Power Rangers AU versions of them.)

Theory Time:

So is it me, or does it seem odd that Ranger is such a… mundane antagonist. Well, he does the whole murder cult stuff, but other than his couple moments with Hacksaw(honestly just flavoring) and that he’s higher up the authority ladder, he’s your average mook with voice lines.

The other antagonists are grandiose. Coot storm is a religious psycho with the whole generational trauma thing wanting to keep the clan in line, albeit struggling right now. Deepdark has a massive interspecies cult that wants the death of all non-members(I think?)

Something is up with Ranger. It is extremely hard to run an interspecies cult probably because of all the clashing cultures. Rainhaze said it himself kinda: it’s difficult to keep up with a the jargon. Deepdark seems to be very interested in this large cat group, maybe not just senseless killing, but something larger. There are obviously several cats in Defiance. As bad*ss as he seems, it is probably difficult keeping all those cultures in check. Let one species get too cocky, and there could be a threat to his power. I could definitely see the cougar or a pack of wolves taking him down(even if plot armor nullifies it is still a possibility)

If he uses more simplified demographics, and keeps large amounts of members the same species, and making sure only a few members are any sort of variety, if he increases the numbers of certain group that are more likely the be more loyal to him, like birds and cats(weaker and less likely to betray) and deer(most likely his nepo babies) vastly outnumbering other species that are more likely to defect(raccoons and foxes being stereotypical disloyal + wolves and cougars much stronger that Deepdark) it will be harder to remove him from power.

So with cats being very good members of Defiance(seems like only Egret and Cormorant left, but Egret was probably an outlier because she is trans and more distant from the cult because trans characters are just more likely to be rebellious in media and Cormorant is kinda dragged along) they are probably a rare case. Maybe Deepdark wants an influx of cats for a ‘homogenize cult and stay safer” plan. He might force Barrenclan into Defiance. He might disguise this as a spiritual reason, but many wars have been disguised as an idealistic or moral reason when it is just for resources. Maybe a twist is that the spirituality and bad idealism will be ripped apart and revealed as thirst for resources and power.

BUT LET’S GET BACK TO RAINHAZE AND RANGER

Rainhaze is broken. He is extremely loyal(except for lying about his clan) Ranger’s little project worked, let’s not trick ourselves. His personality seems a bit strange. A lot of Defiance members seem ultra serious doom and gloom, but him and her crack jokes and cutesy(not really) couple moments. Maybe more are like him, as well as Cupid being pretty nice. There is still some variety in Defiance, personality speaking. Deepdark might not like that either. So he has Ranger start a new project. Brainwash a cat into being just an obedient shell. Maximize productivity with this. After all, it seems like Rainhaze is good at his job and succeeds and carrying out his commands. So, Deepdark might want to try this on a larger group: Barrenclan. After Barrenclan comes the rest, and soon Deepdark is infallible to his own minion.

TLDR: Deepdark doesn’t want a coup wants Defiance homogenized(species and personality) wants to enlist Barrenclan to increase cat numbers. Has Ranger also start experiments to make brainwashed super soldiers to increase productivity.

Wow! Very interesting theory! And a lot of interesting analysis of Defiance. I'm glad it's been making people excited so far, it's a part of the story I enjoy.
