Guys, if you ever want to play a truly unhinged version of The Quarry, get yourself a freshly formatted PS4 and play it from the disc with no updates.
It’s got unfinished shading! It’s got deleted scenes! And my new favorite glitch of all time: I let Dylan keep his hand so he turned at the Scrapyard. Then I got the biggest jump scare I’ve ever had in the game because HE RANDOMLY APPEARED AT THE LODGE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yo, something is not right with that boy. 😭
Emma also appeared with Abi in the surveillance room cut scene despite also being a werewolf trapped in the basement. But that was way less ominous.
This is also my third run using the same save file with chapter select, so I’m guessing something got crossed and there are remnants of prior saves coming through? I was going to let it update but now I feel like I must keep playing it as-is to see just how broken I can make this game.

The Sheriff scares her. Laura would die before she would let him know it. But he does. A bone deep chill that threads taut down her spine and pulls whenever he turns the full force of his black stare on her, bares his teeth, locks his jaw. Still, she digs beneath his skin for answers, cuts with her words and burning eyes. Tenses and waits for him to strike, to end her stream of inquiries and insults with crushing palms, or his fist, or his gun...
Nearly a month passes. It never comes.
Instead, he only feeds them three times a day like clockwork. Let's them shower every few days or so. And takes each and every single thing she throws at him.

“You guys had fun at Hackett’s Quarry last time, right? …Right?”
Played The Quarry with @maxpoeticvideos on stream. We’re working on redemption through a second attempt but let’s just say the first run was very scuffed because of some in game glitches and missing content. We may or may not have played the whole first run with the bare minimum download to get started with playing …

Adventure: Hunting in the Ghostglade
Beyond the fortress city of Amaranth there is a wondrous and serene landscape where phantom animals wander among their flesh and blood counterparts, dissolving into light at the slightest touch. For generations hunters have ventured to these Ghostglades to sharpen their skills and engage in sport year round, all without fear of damaging the local game populations. Whether the after effect of some long forgotten conjuration or, as many locals believe, the concession of a wild god to protect their beloved beloved children... the sight truly must be seen to be believed.
-A wanderer’s guidebook to the cities of the basilisk coast, 6th edition
Hooks:
While conducting business in the city of Amaranth, the party gives offence to some minor noble who challenges them to a duel.. though local custom differs greatly from what the party might be expecting. The Amaranthine nobles consider themselves to be peerless hunters, and so settle matters of dispute by determining who’s bow arm and spear hand is truest: riding through the ghostglade and its surrounding forest at high speeds while trying to tag as many of the phantom animals as possible. Since their quarry dissolves into light and mist after being struck, these riders are also followed by a pair of neutral judges who keep tally of the competitors’ kills, deducting points for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
A foreign priestess of Corellon has journeyed to the edge of the Ghostglade seeking answers and would gladly pay the party in escorting her further. Many of her order have debated about whether this magical patch of nature might be a working of their god and thus a worthy site of pilgrimage, though they’ve had only the generations old accounts of dead sages to mull over. Seeking the presence of her god, this priestess will have the party follow her as she seeks to find the natural temples of these meadowlands, or atleast places where they might be built. Her divinations do not bode well: no specific god seems to hold claim over these wilds, and reaching out to touch the land’s magic seems to make the phantom animals glitch out and become erratic.
Not long after their first trip out to the Ghostglades, the party are approached by a fur trader who claims his brother has gone missing. Their family came up as trappers specializing in the mundane beasts that made their home in the strange landscape, and though the two of them have moved on to bigger and better things, his brother still considers himself a prime outdoorsman. At the end of the trail, the party find a very badly wounded merchant’s brother who’s doing his best to not be spotted by an eerily silent pack of phantom humanoids, faceless, but armed with bows and spears and far more resilient than any of the other ghostly creatures they’ve seen.
There is an artifact in the dead centre of the Ghostglades, hidden in a rather out of the way cave, an alien cube of unplacable metal with a surface that shifts imperceptibly like a puzzlebox made of sand.  What this object’s origins are, none can say, but its purpose is to understand, to observe and replicate animal life in real time by projecting hard-light holograms throughout the region in an attempt to build a model of their behaviour. However long the mechanism has been operating, it’s only been a few hundred years since the city of Amaranth was founded and people worked up the courage to start poofing its holograms for fun, disrupting its careful calculations.   It’s taking the intervening years for the device’s un-mind to create a working model of what sort of animal a “hunter” is, having only recently concluded that they are entities that stalk, chase, ambush and kill anything that moves. Over the coming days, more and more of these projections will appear in the ghostglades, searching for interlopers, posing a definite threat to any who make their living off the surrounding meadowlands and forests.

New Dog's Life chapter today! ~ 3rd Life series fan-season
Chapter 15 - “Scald (Ren, Jimmy, Scar)”
❤️ Read on AO3
💛 Start from Chapter 1
💚 More Pixels Imperfect fics
---
While Impulse prowls in search of Bdubs, life goes on. Ren, Joel, Jimmy, Tango, and Cleo get along in their respective spheres. And Scar? ... Well, since Etho never showed up for Session 2, Scar's teamed with a bunch of other explorers to tackle a cave adventure. With a group that large, it's only a matter of time before hunters turn on quarries...
(First 1,000 words under the cut)
---
Renthedog - Chicken
Quarry: ZombieCleo
Hunter: Smajor1995
Allegiance: Unaffiliated
💚  💛  ❤️
"Hey." Is that a weird thing to say to a guy you haven't seen since his particles dissolved? He looks better now, standing with his hands in his hoodie pockets. In traditional Joel fashion, he got a new outfit for Session 2. The hoodie's sky blue. Puffy pastel letters spell out Glitch Survivor down the front, surrounded by four hearts, several azaleas, and little sparkles.
Skizzleman stole the traits of Tropical Fish
Actually, the whole thing looks glittery. It's childish and goofy and he looks snug and content, like Ren didn't catch him staring at his reflection for a little too long while they changed in the shower house. Ren has questions (which will go unanswered) regarding what went on between Joel's boss and the skin designers in the community mere days ago.
Not that I'm one to talk. I'm going all-in on the farmer's aesthetic this time around. It just sort of happened to him. Honestly? Can't complain, dude. The flannel shirt is comfy, the jeans aren't so bad, and the whole vibe fits his familiar suspenders pretty well. He's half worried he'll overheat, so he keeps rolling the sleeves back to his elbows.
If he were to put it into words, he's playing into that vibe of all the world in chaos while he serves smiles and escapism in his pretty little garden. In fact, Ren gets up from the muck, taking out a handkerchief to wipe dirt form his hands, and walks over to join Joel by the fence. He leans against it. Joel tilts his head. He's got little panda ears.
"'Hey' yourself, Ren. Ooh, look at you working hard in the chaos game."
"Thanks, man. You're looking good on green again; nice, nice- A+ material."
Skizzleman stole the traits of Salmon
"Yeah, Grian kicked me back up since, y'know… the whole 'creeper glitch' wasn't meant to happen and I did get my proper quarry kill." Joel points two thumbs at the bubbly text across his chest. "He'd better watch his ruddy little backend, though, because I intend to hit purple before I see yellow again. This order is tall, but so am I." His eyes roam behind Ren, wandering the other side of the fence. His fingers tap together inside his hoodie pocket. "Got quite a bit of wheat there, haven't you?"
"Wheat?" He keeps his tone light and friendly, but repeats the word 'wheat' to make it undeniable what he's referring to. "Take a bit if you like; leave something if you want. It's my community garden. This, my friend, is a safe space." He glances left and right, then leans forward, dipping his voice. He even lifts one hand to catch his words, though no one seems to be around eavesdropping. "Seems to me like you're less likely to get sniped off if your would-be murderer knows you'll respawn a few blocks away to have your revenge! And lay waste to them completely where they stand!"
Joel lifts both brows, curious but flat-mouthed. "Eeeh… Not the most exciting content for you, is it? I mean… You could achieve the same thing by lurking near your base. Or plopping your bed down anytime you anticipate a fight, if you wanna be some sort of freak… Also, I'm pretty sure you can't strike your hunter back if you drop from green life to yellow? You're still yellow, right? That's a passive color."
bigbst4tz2 stole the traits of Creeper Skizzleman stole the traits of Turtle
"… Look, it's cool, okay? Spawn's cool." Ren gestures sideways, flapping the handkerchief. "I'm in my peaceful arc right now. Spawn shall be the most beautiful place to rest one's head!"
Joel looks around, skeptic impatience dancing on his lips. Spawn isn't technically a peninsula, but it stands on a raised, flat bit of land overlooking the rushing river. The wind's gusty up here, bamboo and jungle trees swishing. Ren's got his hidden chickens and pigs.
Thus far, his play session consists mostly of bartering with Scott and Skizz for the right to breed their sheep. They helped him lead the sheep back in return for the right to take two chickens, and the haughty stare in Scott's gaze warned Ren that he wouldn't hesitate to kill every animal in his underground hidey-hole, regardless of what killing so many and swapping traits that many times in a row would do to his stomach. He needs to move them. The Sushi Boys know where they are right now and that's not a good strat.
GoodTimesWithScar stole the traits of Enderman
"Peaceful, yeah," Joel says. He leans against the fencepost, cupping his cheek in one hand. Well, one panda paw. "Say… Any chance I could pull you away from your work for a couple hours, mate? Promise it'll be worth your while."
"Oh?"
"You got shovels?" Joel summons his own to his hand with a flick of the wrist. It's stone, unimpressive, but he taps it against the edge of the fence like it's made of netherite. "I'm thinking we go about digging up sand. It won't be a monopoly, but Grian always makes a grab at it, and I think yoinking it before he tries will be the best strat."
"… Seems like he'll come after you once he realizes you've got it."
"Hope he does. I want him-" Joel makes a shhhhluck! sound, gliding the shovel scoop across his own throat. "You get me? Come on; we'll make a game of it."
Ren frowns, one ear twitching like he's got a flea. He tries not to glance at the place he hid his animals, though that means jerking his eyes back to Joel as they start to drift sideways. "Well… It sounds like you might be luring me away for a bit of thievery-"
"Oh, like you've got better plans today. You and your smelly little farm, your smelly little livestock…"
So he's already aware of them. He's not trying to fake me out. Ren lifts his hands. "All right; you've convinced me. Let's have ourselves a dig, my friend." For the sake of content creation. For the sake of getting out of his own head, too… Apart from his visit to Scott and Skizz, he's pretty much been gardening all day long. He's got an inventory full of bread and a back-up chest to boot.
And I know I'm not his quarry…

i think i really like the dark pictures anthology because they put. so much freaking effort into every aspect of these games.
yeah the mocap is a little janky, yeah there are glitches, but they're working with what they've got in terms of funding and technology. it's the WRITING, man, that blows me away. what a (super)massive undertaking that must be!! the script writer for until dawn said in an interview that he used microsoft excel to keep all the branching story beats straight, and it was only after the game's release that the studio developed their own program specifically to write this flavor of game. so so so cool, are you kidding me??
until dawn gets so much love and deserves it, but i want more people to talk about dark pictures too. these games are just so earnest about what they want to be, and the creative integrity shown by the studio is refreshing compared to the majority of media that's designed to appeal to the widest audience possible. each story is completely unashamed to emulate a specific horror subgenre, and you can just tell the devs had fun when coming up with the plot, mechanics, and visuals.
and on top of that, they put in the extra thought and effort necessary to give these stories genuinely meaningful themes; in little hope, dealing with self-forgiveness in the midst of grief, in house of ashes, an anti-war stance that a lot of studios wouldn't touch for commercial reasons, and in the devil in me, commentary on art of all things. they could have totally just done a simple saw trap route a la josh's maniac setup in until dawn, but instead they made the overarching story about the artistic process, especially relating to macabre subject matter like true crime. of course there are still plenty of ridiculous saw traps and genre-typical cliches, but there's MORE to it than that, and the game probably would have sold just as well if deeper themes hadn't been included. if they don't know supermassive, people are most likely playing the game for the saw trap stuff, but surprise! this game has a really cool story too! it has fantastic execution of branching storytelling, brilliant atmospheric tension, and a mystery with the curator than spans over multiple games! i could say similar things about each of the other entries, that they go far beyond their gimmicks and deserve your attention.
i see the dark pictures games and think to myself, "yeah, these are where supermassive's creative passion really lies." say what you want about the quarry, but it felt dryer, less inspired, more phoning-it-in storywise compared to until dawn and dpa. it's still a cool game, but compared to dpa i just don't think it was supermassive's favorite project to work on. i almost wonder if some of the artistic commentary in the devil in me is a projection of the development staff having to split their time between dpa and the quarry, given the fact that both games were 2022 releases.
i don't really have a point here, except that the dark pictures anthology is a very cool and innovative flavor of horror media and i love it to bits. i can't play it, because i'd have a panic attack, but i sure do wish more people talked about it. and i'm SUPER excited to see what supermassive does next with dpa in directive 8020!!

A finished set. 9 locations from Slime Rancher. Not quite sure how to do the alt text for this one without it being an essay, but here goes:
[img ID: a grid of nine pixel art pieces showing different locations. The first is the Dry Reef, represented by three tall coral columns, pink grass, brown rocks, and a browny-orange ground.
The second is the Indigo Quarry, represented by purple cliffs, a group of hexagonal crystalline structures in blues and greens, green grass, and greyish-brown ground.
Third is the Glass Desert, represented by a flame-like glass structure in blues and greens, a cactus, and a large grey statue of an emoji-esque smiling face half sunk into the sandy floor.
Fourth is the Moss Blanket, represented by a giant toadstool with a red cap, green bushes and hanging vines, and a plant with glowing pink orbs instead of flowers.
Fifth is the Ancient Ruins, represented by a broken arch, red bushes, blue glow sticks and a tree with green foliage.
Sixth is the Nimble Valley, represented by a pine tree with brown needles, a floating island with grey metallic rocks emerging from it, and a sandy blue floor with swirling patterns.
Seventh is The Wilds, represented by a cave with a huge glowing depiction of a slime on its walls, a rock covered in glowing ancient designs representing slimes, and a kookadoba ball cracker.
Eighth is The Slimeulation represented by an exit portal containing a yellow, floating exit sign; a duplicate fruit tree; and a dark purple glitch patch.
Ninth is The Ranch, represented by a mechanical worker bee, the house, and a tree with pink foliage. /end ID]

He’s baaaack!
I killed everyone in The Quarry this week in my deeply broken PS4 disc-only, no updates save and Dylan once again appeared where he should not have been (this time from beyond the grave!) to scare the shit out of Kaitlyn and me and guilt trip us about leaving him behind in the scrapyard.
Tumblr media
This fuckin guy. Twink ass jump-scare.
Tumblr media
When you watch your friend get dismembered and then he makes it even more awkward by coming back wrong. 😑
I already felt guilty enough! Then I had to make Kaitlyn fall off the beam and die and she would never!

Stardew Valley mod rec compilation
this is a regular question asked on the discord so I wanted to put together my own constant pack to link.
These are NOT all mods I use. These are the mods I’m **completely confident **in recommending together, that definitely work well, combine well and won’t create any cognitive dissonance.
(Note that I’m not listing any prerequisites. Whichever mod you’re installing, you obviously need to install its prerequisites too)
(Most of these are on Nexus, but not all. MARGO is on GitHub, for example. Search on Nexus first, then duckduckgo or google it if it’s not there)
Utility if-you’re-modding: (mods that maybe won’t improve your game per se and you don’t want to install Just Them if you’re picking and choosing, but if you’re already using other mods, you want to look at these)
Advanced Save Backup (obvious function is obvious, don’t let mod fuckups permanently ruin your save)
Generic Mod Config Menu (absolutely mandatory if you’re installing like… >1 other mod)
CJB Cheats Menu + CJB Item Spawner (the more mods you have the more likely you’ll need this to recover after glitches. There are vanilla bugs you might want this to help you with too)
Jump Over (or noclip, in case you get stuck somewhere)
Mod Update Menu (fully optional, but might be nice)
Quality of Life (mods that I’m completely confident work well together and will improve your game withough particularly changing it. You do want to meddle in config for many of these though. Increase complexity at your own pace)
Action Sitting
After Midnight Speed Buff
Easy Coal
Balanced Quarry
Better Artisan Good Icons
Better Beehouses
Better Chests
Better Ranching (turn off “prevent failed harvesting” in config, add Fix Animal Tool Animations for that functionality instead)
Bigger Backpack
Collapse on Farm Fix
Destroyable Bushes
Gift Rejection
Grass Growth
Horse Overhaul - Immersive Scarecrows
Immersive Sprinklers
Lucky Rabbit’s Foot
Mail Services Mod
MARGO - Tweex, Tools and Ponds modules
Remember Birthdays
Robin Work Hours
Expanded Big Shed
Sturdier Saplings
Time Speed
Zoom Level
Friendship QoL: (I’m putting these into a separate category because they specifically make one thing easier and might be unbalanced together - but if you want lots of custom NPCs they might be necessary as a breath of air)
Part of the Community
Passive Friendship
Friend of a Friend
Visual (This is specifically the combination I use, that I know for a fact works well and looks good together. These are mods that don’t alter any mechanics or add any content and mostly don’t impact balance, they’re purely to make the game look better)
Custom Menu Background
Better Water
Cuter Coops and Better Barns or Coop and Barn Facelift
Darker Vanilla Crops
Darker Vanilla Forage
Dynamic Night Time
Dynamic Reflections
Happy Fish Jump
Iridium Sprinkler Desaturated or Burnished Bronze Iridium Sprinkler
Less Ugly Spouse Rooms
Medieval Buildings
Simple Foliage
Skell’s Flowery Tools
Starry Night Interface (deleted from Nexus)
Vintage Interface (and this if you’re using Bigger Backpack)
Vibrant Pastoral Recolor
Way Back Pelican Town
Wind Effects
Yri’s Modular Flowers
Eemie’s Dark Wood and Gold Craftables - Scarecrow and Rarecrow Recolors - Climates of Ferngill
Swimsuit Selection
Spritemaster, and you can turn off the smoothing just for faster rendering everywhere with no visual changes
Dialogue + NPCs (Thoroughly vetted - exclusively the mods that don’t create any contradictory lore, fit fully with vanilla, and might make you feel like vanilla was always intended to be this way)
Dusty Overhaul
Community Wednesdays and Community Center Reimagined
David the Hamster
Demetrius Visits Farm Cave Redux
Diverse Stardew Valley
the ethnic wedding outfit collection (Emily Ukrainian Wedding Dress and others with the same naming scheme, entering “wedding” into search is a good way to find these)
Haley Reads Magazines (plug of my own mod)
Immersive Spouses
Jean and Jorts
Social Haley
Unlikely Friends
Immersive Sandy
Make the game more fun (This is a fairly diverse category - these are the mods that will substantially alter the game and give it a decidedly non-vanilla feel and balance, but that I’m willing to vouch for as fun, non-conflicting, non-glitchy and not making your life harder. Some of them are smaller than others)
Walk to Desert Redux
Archery + Archery starter pack
Artista
Cape Stardew
Cat gifts
Deep Woods
Farmhouse visits
Festival of the Mundane
Hot Spring Farm Cave (or another farm cave mod)
If It Fits I Sits
Improved Cindersap Forest (plug of my own mod)
Like a Duck to Water
Lost in the Mountains (or another custom farm map mod) (plug of my own mod)
MARGO - Combat, Professions and Taxes modules
Stardew Druid
Swim Mod
Wren’s Expanded Greenhouse (or another greenhouse mod)
Animals Need Water
Even More Secret Woods
NPC Adventures (and content packs for it)
Map Editor Extended
Free Love pack (This is for the people who think SV is nice in allowing the player to date multiple people, but unnecessarily restrictive in allowing them to only marry one of them. I’m putting other romance/marriage/parenthood mods in this category also) necessary: (these are the mods you need to make a multi-spouse household function smoothly, period. Need extensive configuring, usually, so pay attention when you install them)
Bed Tweaks
Custom Spouse Patio Redux (this one can glitch, but Map Editor Extended has fixed it for me fine every time)
Custom Spouse Rooms
Free Love
Wedding Tweaks optional: (these are the mods that can substantially improve your personal life if you’re into them, but Free Love functions fine without them)
Platonic Partners and Friendships
Bachelors and Bachelorettes stay friends
Fourteen Heart Events for All
Gender Neutrality Mod
Not In Here By Yourself (plug of my own mod)
Hugs and Kisses
Multiple Spouse Dialogs (+Tia’s and Liliet’s packs for it) (plug of my own mod uwu)
Planned Parenthood
Swimsuit Selection
Unique Children
Unique Children Talk - T’s Spouse Room
