Some ask the world and are diminished in the receiving of it. You gave me only this small pool that the more I drink from, the more overflows me with sourceless light.

I'm going to cram my fixations into my schoolwork like a square peg in a round hole
#chattering#is it a risky gamble talking about video games in my letter of introduction to my very technophobic professor?#yes#but she asked about favorite poets and my favorite poem at the moment is reflections by rs thomas#there's also a nonzero chance she gets a fan poem from me at some point during the semester#I've got an idea bouncing around my head we'll see if it actually makes it out

Does the game mention anything about Harry's education then, like was education required to be a gym teacher. I know he learned building safety in that one cut case from the ledger.
that's a good question, i don't think it does mention anything. the only thing i can think of is mentions of general education. here's harry reciting part of the rs thomas poem 'reflections' which he seems to have memorized in school

yesss disco elysium is an indescribable experience!!
disco elysium isn’t a game, it’s a mirror. do you like your reflection? it’s a two part act: the reflection and the reaction.
the quote from the rs thonas poem at the beginning of the game sums it up best tho
“the furies are at home in the mirror; it is their address.” — r. s. thomas
i’ve been struggling to come up w/ what disco elysium is about for people who want to get into it cause. it’s a post soviet depression simulator. it’s a bisexual man who has amnesia so bad he forgot what being gay means. it’s about that man having amnesia so bad because he tried to kill himself by going on a three day bender. it’s the funniest game i’ve ever played. it’s the most deeply profound game i’ve ever played. a central character to the theming is a big bug. i think fundamentally, disco elysium is a game about living in a world without hope and choosing to survive but that’s kinda hard to say when part of “living without hope and choosing to survive” also encompasses taking psychic damage and dying after a kid calls you a fag
#though this doesn’t necessarily help explain what disco’s about fjdjjfb#thought id toss a couple pennies in#disco elysium

The Prisoner
— R.S. Thomas
‘Poems from prison! About what?’ ‘Life and God.’ ‘God in prison? Friend, you trifle with me. His face, perhaps, at the bars, fading like life.’ ‘He came in with the warder, striving with him. Where else did the severity of the man spring from, but awareness of a charity he must overcome?’ ‘The blows, then, were God chastening the beloved! Who was the more blessed, the dispenser or receiver of them?’ ‘It is the same outside. Bars, walls but make the perspective clear. Deus absconditus! We ransack the heavens, the distance between stars; the last place we look is in prison, his hideout in flesh and bone.’ ‘You believe, then?’ ‘The poems are witness. If his world contracted, it was to give birth to the larger vision. Not meadows empty of him, animal eyes, impersonal as glass, communicate God. On the bare walls of a cell the oppressor watches the diminishing of his human shadow, as he withdraws from the light.’

In a Country Church
By R.S. Thomas
To one kneeling down no word came,
Only the wind’s song, saddening the lips
Of the grave saints, rigid in glass;
Or the dry whisper of unseen wings,
Bats not angels, in the high roof.
Was he balked by silence? He kneeled long
And saw love in a dark crown
Of thorns blazing, and a winter tree
Golden with fruit of a man’s body.

last year I bought for super cheap a used book of english poetry from a library sale, it apparently was made in the early 60s and aimed at teenage boys, there’s a selection of all men poets (yeah) from wordsworth to rs thomas and has school guides and stuff, which is good because I’m trying to understand some nuances of meter which I wasn’t taught when learning the english language
anyway, all this is to say that I wonder about the roundabout ways of life and how idk if the senior english master of the grammar school for boys who apparently selected these considered that his audience would be a latin american woman in a pandemic in 2020 who instead of reciting the macavity poem by ts eliot is singing alw’s version that he composed for the cats musical
#luly rambles#would he be appalled? proud? curious?#I am getting mixed vibes from him#the cover has a woman and the book doesn't seem to have any women poets#would it kill you to include my gal christina rossetti she's yours

Below Are NOTES About Today's PODCAST (3-22-19):
Today's Program -- Contents -- Outline:
IMAGE: The "God is Now Here" Chart of the Heavens -- Inner Regions of Consciousness According to Sant Mat;
Seven Ingredients of a Living Spiritual Path -- Seven Gnostic-Sant Mat Parallels
In the Corpus Hermeticum and Nag Hammadi scriptures are/were described all of the ingredients of a living, viable mystical path:
1) living masters/teachers with students (past masters, scrolls, cuneiform tablets or old scriptures are not enough; a living guide is required);
2) a cosmology of several heavens/inner regions/planes/spheres;
3) an understanding that souls can access these realms here and now during this present life (a present-tense Kingdom of Heaven available to souls right now, not a spirituality postponed till some magical date on a calendar or hypothesized future age);
4) an initiation into the mysteries of the heavens, imparting to spiritual seekers the meditation techniques and sacred names;
5) visionary and auditory mysticism (inner Light and Sound, spiritual seeing and hearing) -- descriptions of souls traveling within through various inner regions;
6) they have an ethical code, and this ethical foundation includes a vegetarian diet, then and now;
7) The Goal of the teachings and meditation practice is experiencing direct union with God.
"The heavens and the earth will roll up in your presence, and whoever is living from the Living One will not see death." (Gospel of Thomas, Saying 111)
"Seek to see [contemplate] the Living One as long as you live, otherwise you might die and then try to see the Living One, and you will be unable to see." (Gospel of Thomas, Saying 59)
"Seek To See God Now -- Liberation During This Life" -- Mystic-Poem of Sant Tulsi Sahib
"In this life the concept of salvation all describe;
To meet the Lord by dying while living, none discloses.
They all speak of the goal of salvation after death;
How to attain it while living, no one says. Were they to reveal the method of attaining release while living,
Then alone would Tulsi be convinced of their words.
Who speak, after seeing with their own eyes, and teach the method of salvation during life,
Are of the stage and stature of Saints, for they reveal the quintessence of the soul."
"Within This Body" -- Mystic-Poem of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras
"Within this body breathes the secret essence. Within this body beats the heart of the Vedas.
Within this body shines the entire Universe, so the saints say.
Hermits, ascetics, celibates all are lost seeking Him in endless guises.
Seers and sages perfectly parrot the scriptures and holy books, blinded by knowledge.
Their pilgrimage, and fasting, and striving but delude
Despite their perfect practice, they discover no destination.
Only the Saints who know the body's heart have attained the Ultimate, O Tulsi.
Realize this, and you've found your freedom (while teachers trapped in tradition know only the mirage in the mirror)."

Italian!R because boi do i need this
spent years trying to work on his accent, figured that he might as well be proud of that only in his mid twenties and now speaks the same way Joey Tribbiani does.
has a big family he pays a visit to every damn year in the summer. a lot of the amis had no idea where he went for those two weeks every july, but that one summer his family went to his place they suddenly were invaded by lots of Rs
canon!danceR: has studied ballet as a kid, then drop out thanks to an emotional breakdown. his family still thinks he’s the best dancer in the world and even though he’s super embarassed and doesn’t really like to talk about that specific moment of his life he always asks his grandma to dance with him when they see each other.
Enj has seen videos of that happening and was almost reduced to a puddle of happy tears
R’s first name is definitely Tommaso and his family definitely gave that to him and now regrets it. (his family is v catholic and Thomas was the skeptic apostole that had to stick his finger into re-incarnated jesus to believe he resurrected. R’s family thinks that it’s his name’s fault if he’s like this)*
given that he moved out of italy in his early teens (12/13yo), he still has the eating habits of an italian. which means that he eats pasta at least once a day.
joly, who’s a celiac, has cursed him multiple times.
r has no idea how to cook, and everyone makes fun of him because of that, but somehow manages to make a pretty decent pizza dough.
“at least it’s not a capitalist imitation of my nation’s pride” –R on multiple occasions when the other amis were about to call a takeaway pizza from the closest pizza hut/domino’s/wtv
once got overly emotional visiting the vatican’s museums because he thought he wasn’t worthy of sharing the same land Michelangelo, Raffaello and the Big Artists had walked and called theirs.
it’s really a coffee drinker, but somehow fell into that hole when in uni. now he can’t stop.
he only considers coffe the Actual Italian Coffee and is physically repulsed by starbucks’ and such.
“it’s not coffee. it’s a prolonged nightmare that vaguely tastes like caffeine” – R, staring judgingly at a venti frappuccino
has cosplayed Luigi multiple times.
“it’s not a stupid stereotype if i do it” –R, again, multiple times, when confronted with the reality that lies behind the “It’s-a me” phrase.
claims to know latin but only knows the gay myths and catullus’ R rated poems
talks in long ass periods and has no idea how to cut short his sentences.
blames it on the “different grammar scheme that his native language imprinted in his brain”
once caught someone making a mafia joke and almost punched him into a coma
i might go on forever so i’ll stop here for now
#les mis#les amis#les miserables#grantaire#r#taire#grandr#exr#italian!R is a hc that is very close to my heart#also. if yuo're wondering. each of these is based on myself#ignoring the ballet part because i'm a piece of wood

1 3 5 19 25 for the de game!
1. Who is your favourite character apart from Harry and Kim? - soona! she was one of my faves to interact with and i found her incredibly interesting. Also neha cause she’s so sweet
3. Do you have a favourite Copotype and political alignment and if so, which one? - Apocalypse Cop is my favorite but I don’t play it a ton cause i think playing harry as a pathetic sorry cop works better for my playstyle lol. Also i can’t not play as a communist i have too much fun with it and the other alignments make me feel Bad
5. What is a popular fan interpretation that you don’t like? - tbh i’m not too engaged with the fandom to know this kinda stuff but like ig jean and harry being exes or just like. having any romantic feelings for each other. to me they are just guys being dudes or like divorcees who married for tax benefits and nothing else
19. Which character arc or piece of lore would you have wanted to be explored more in depths? - oh man soooo much stuff but i find the existential horror of the pale so compelling i feel like i could hear about it for days. as for character arcs i wanted more for cuno tbh i wanted more ways to help him and like as far as i know his plot really ends after the speed thing unless kim gets hurt and i just wish there was a way to help him more idk
25. Favourite piece of in-game art (graffiti, poetry etc.)? - the stained glass of dolores dei in the church and the graffiti on the street on the final day. i know it’s basic but i love them. also the use of reflections by rs thomas but since that’s a real world poem i wasn’t sure if it counted lol
#thank you so much for indulging me and also for being one of my best suppliers for de content I appreciate the hell outta you#answered#depression

Ash Wednesday
The Bright Field
I have seen the sun break through to illuminate a small field for a while, and gone my way and forgotten it. But that was the pearl of great price, the one field that had treasure in it. I realise now that I must give all that I have to possess it. Life is not hurrying
on to a receding future, nor hankering after an imagined past. It is the turning aside like Moses to the miracle of the lit bush, to a brightness that seemed as transitory as your youth once, but is the eternity that awaits you.
~ RS Thomas
What has prompted you to choose to ‘turn aside’ this lent?
Mainly the fact that I used ‘Haphazard by Starlight’ over Advent and Christmas, and it was good. I’m scared of Lent this year. Last time I kept it properly - doing the daily offices etc - I was working in Coventry, and it feels like that was when my life fell apart a bit. And so I’m at theological college, in chapel at least once a day, and scared that everything will fall apart even more. I’m scared of the fact that I still don’t feel as though I’ve regained my stability, and the fact that I think it’s probably possible to get more broken still.
So hopefully taking up this discipline of reading poetry and thinking will give me somewhere to take my fears.
Maybe this poem speaks to that - the ‘hankering after/ an imagined past’. Maybe things weren’t as perfect as I think they were. Maybe Coventry was just the point that I admitted the struggle and let things fall. Maybe the flashes of joy and hope in the present are really what awaits me in eternity. Maybe God is good.
