Trendy and financially stable people hang out here, so make sure you look the part.

Ormsby’s
Located in West Midtown, this stylish speakeasy brings in a younger crowd – and gets busy Fridays around 8. Join singles in their 20s and 30s at the bar and bocce ball courts in the back.
Yebo Beach/Ski Haus
This chic and airy South African restaurant is inside a renovated Buckhead house – and a great place to land attractive singles. You’ll find attractive women in their early-to-late 40s and handsome 50-something executives. Sit at the bar, order rosé or a Manhattan, and engage with the other singles around you.
Ladybird Grove and Mess Hall
Located in Atlanta’s historic Old Fourth Ward, this is the first outdoor-oriented bar and restaurant to open along the BeltLine. Go early on a Saturday or Sunday, grab a seat outside, and hangout. Feel free to bring your dog (or borrow one from a friend?) – they’re always a good conversation starter.

Dress upscale, exude quiet confidence, and put your best face forward – that means look your best! And be open to someone approaching you. (It’s practically on the menu…)

Chops Bar
Millionaire Matchmaking Near Good Hope Ga
While it attracts men and women late 30s and up, older wealthy men are always hanging around the bar at this old-school chophouse with a warm darkwood dining room. It’s likely you’ll catch them sporting Brooks Brothers suits, drinking the best bourbon, and enjoying a stellar steak. Women who know the type of men who hang out there dress to impress with high heels, tight dresses, and blown-out hair. If you want to be clear about your desire to pick someone up or to be picked up, head to Chops, Atlas, or The St. Regis Bar.
Kaleidoscope
Located on Brookhaven’s Dresden Drive, this comfortable neighborhood joint offers an international, eclectic menu. You’ll find – and want to join – others drinking beer at the bar, watching a game, and embracing a bottomless brunch. Bring your appetite for great food and great fun!
JCT Kitchen
Updated Southern fare, a hip space with late-night live music, and an upstairs bar with skyline view – this is one of the best singles spot to hangout. It gets pretty busy during happy hours on weeknights.
Barcelona
Tantalizing tapas, or shareable plates, with a large wine selection, and two locations, West Midtown and the busier Inman Park. Instead of sitting at a table, choose the bustling bar to the left of the restaurant. Strike up a conversation by asking someone what wine they are drinking and if you should get it – or by offering a taste of one of your tasty tapas.
Local Three
A cool place with a warm atmosphere, it’s a great place to meet good-looking 50-something executives while enjoying its New American fare, creative cocktails, and handcrafted furniture.
Six Feet Under Pub and Fish House
If you consider yourself “an average Joe” or “plain Jane” looking for a mate, this joint is a comfy, kitchy seafood spot with craft beers on tap and popular rooftop bar completed with skyline vistas.
Sound Table
Open from 7pm-2:30 am, this industrial space in Edgewood starts as a normal bar that serves small plates and cocktails, morphs into a dance club later in the night.
Cypress Pint and Plate
A relaxed Midtown tavern with a patio, you’ll enjoy tasting its rotating lineup of beers on tap paired with hearty American grub. If you’re looking for a man, head there on “Beer Geek” Tuesdays. They also have trivia nights on Wednesdays.

This was the Oceanside Business Association’s 7th Annual Taste of Vero event on Ocean Drive in Vero Beach, Florida 32963. Twenty-one restaurants and booths setup shop for the evening with nearly perfect weather roughly 79 degrees and a nice ocean breeze. We had quite the crowd as the sidewalks were lined with people and every booth had a small but quick line. It was steady from 5pm – 8pm.
Most certainly many onlookers at all of the shops, park and hotels eating ice creams and drinking beers watching all the foodie chaos. After you visited the ticketing station and tasted all your plates there was voting to be had for Favorite Booth, Favorite Entree and Favorite Dessert. Below you will find the booths, the sponsors and THE TASTE.
We have our favorites but before we share please tell us who you voted for and why in the comments below.
This year “The Food Guy”, Thomas Miller (Vero Beach Foodie), was out of town with family so Stacy Cook (Vero Vine) and Stacie Renee (Hurried Home Chef) were on scene to taste and report. Below you will find photos and descriptions of all plates and our favorites.

Tsilivi Beach Zakynthos & Tsilivi Town Travel Guide
Tsilivi Beach and Tsilivi Town is one of the best areas to stay in Zakynthos for sure. It has a stunning beach, some great restaurants and plenty of accommodation options. It’s a good option for a place to stay on the east coast of Zakynthos, or you can just pop in for a day.
As we stayed in nearby Psarou, we came to the beach here quite often and even though it lost its Blue Flag status for cleanliness and ecological awareness in 2018, it’s still a clean beach with perfectly clear water and nice pebbly sand.
About Tsilivi Beach
Also commonly referred to as Planos, this was one of our favourite stretches of sand in Zakynthos. It’s a beautiful, wide beach with plenty of restaurants and things to do nearby. I was really surprised to hear that it lost its Blue Flag status, but when we were there it was after it had lost the award and it still looked incredibly clean to me.

Where is Tsilivi Beach?
Tsilivi is located smack dab in the center of the eastern coast of Zakynthos with Zante Town to the south and Alykes to the north. It’s also very close (almost walking distance) to nearby Psarou Beach where we stayed.
Zakynthos Island itself is located in the Ionian Sea in western Greece. It’s a small island of just 405 kilometres² (156 miles²), but it’s a popular tourist destination in the summer months. It’s around 20 kilometres west of mainland Greece and about 250 kilometres west of the capital of Athens.
Other Popular Places in Zakynthos
Gerakas Beach
Navagio Beach
Laganas Beach
Zante Town
Banana Beach
Porto Azzuro
Porto Limnionas
Keri
Alykes
Xigia Beach
Psarou Beach
How To Get To Tsilivi Beach
The best way to get to Tsilivi Beach (and to all of the places to visit in Zakynthos) is to rent your own car. Prices start at just €15 per day and it’s really worth it to have the freedom to explore the island at your own pace.
Alternatively, if you’re staying in Zante town or one of the other beach towns on the east coast, you could rent a boat and take it around the many different coves on the west side of Zakynthos before arriving in Tsilivi.
Lastly, there are some public transport options to get you to Tsilivi Beach but the buses in Zakynthos don’t run that often and all of them start in Zante Town and make their rounds from there. You’ll have to ask your hotel or apartment for the bus times as they change based on season and they’re not often posted. Here is the route:
Argassi – Xirokastelo – Vassilikos – Porto Roma – Tsilivi – Planos – Tragaki – Kipseli – Alykanas – Alykes – Katastari – Orthonies – Anafonitria – Volimes – Exo Hora – Kambi – Agios Leon – Agios Nikolaos – Machairado – Galaro – Gyri – Keri – Agalas – Lithakia – Laganas.
Again, the buses aren’t that reliable which is why we recommend hiring your own car.

Best Time To Visit Tsilivi Beach Zakynthos
The Best Time of Day To Visit Tsilivi Beach
The best time of day to visit Tsilivi Beach is in the middle of the day between 11 am and 2 pm when the sun is directly overhead and the sand is being illuminated from below. Alternatively, sunset is a good time to come here, though you’re facing east so you won’t see it hit the water.
The Best Time Of Year to Visit Tsilivi Beach
The best time to visit Greece is between the months of March and November, but for a beach holiday you’ll want to stick to April to September when the sea is still warm enough to swim.
We love to visit Zakynthos in May (or September) as there are fewer tourists at that time but the weather is sunny and the sea is warm enough for a brisk dip.
The Type of Sand on Tsilivi Beach
The sand here is golden, squeaky clean, and soft to walk on. Many beaches on Zakynthos Island and around the Mediterranean are pebbly, making it uncomfortable to walk around in bare feet, but not Tsilivi.
There is a gradual drop into the ocean so it’s a great place for shallow water sports like frisbee, and also a good place for families. The water is almost always calm as it’s in a relatively secluded bay.
Facilities on Tsilivi Beach
There are plenty of facilities on Tsilivi Beach Zakynthos to make you comfortable. There are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent from €7 per day for two sunbeds and an umbrella. There are also some watersports like windsurfing, water skiing, banana, pedaloes, jet skiing, and paragliding.
There are some equipment rental places on the beach as well and plenty of restaurants. Many of the restaurants also have sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, as well as toilets. Some of them also have beach showers.
Where To Stay Near Tsilivi Beach
There are quite a few options for hotels, guest houses, villas, apartments and resorts around Tsilivi Beach. There are also some nearby beaches like Buka Beach, Gaidaros Beach and Belussi Beach, all of which have their own accommodation options and are within walking distance.
Here are the best hotel and apartment options near Tsilivi Beach:

Best Restaurants Near Tsilivi Beach
While there are a lot of great restaurants right on Tsilivi Beach, you’ll notice that the first two on this list are out of town. That’s because if you have a car, these places are worth the 10-minute drive from Tsilivi to eat at, but I’ve also included some right on the sand.
Taverna Psarou
Unnamed Road, Psarou 291 00, Greece ★ 4.4/5 (36 Reviews)
Mains from €8
If you don’t mind the 10-minute drive from Tsilivi, then don’t miss this place. There’s nothing like watching the sunset over Zakaynthos while drinking a delicious glass of wine and listening to the Ionian Sea lap the sand just a few feet away. This was one of the best restaurants in Zakynthos that we went to and in our opinion, having sunset dinner here is one of the best things to do on the island as well.
Lofos Restaurant
Unnamed Rd, Meso Gerakari 291 00, Greece ★ 4.7/5 (313 Reviews)
Mains from €7
Again, you’ll have to get in the car and drive here from Tsilivi Beach (about 10 minutes), but it’s worth it! This is without a doubt our favourite little taverna in Zakynthos. The view from the hilltop here is spectacular and the food and service is amazing as well.
Benikos Greek Gourmet Taverna
Planos 291 00, Greece ★ 4.7/5 (351 Reviews)
Mains from €7
This is easily one of the most popular taverns in Tsilivi Town. Set a couple of blocks back from the beach, this family-run place has great service, excellent food and a nice cozy feel. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and the wait staff will help you order the freshest seafood on the menu.
Taverna by the Sea Paradeisos
Zakynthos 291 00, Greece ★ 4.6/5 (389 Reviews)
Mains from €8.50
With tables set on a patio overlooking the beach, this is one of the best beach restaurants in Tsilivi Beach Zakynthos. Sit here and gaze out over the sea towards the island of Kefalonia while sipping a glass of red wine and eating delicious Greek food. You can’t beat this place for value and quality in Tsilivi town.
Should You Go To Tsilivi Beach?
Tsilivi Beach is not as busy as it’s cousins further south but has enough going on to keep you here for a few days. Whether you visit Tsilivi Beach as a stop on a tour around the island or you choose to rent an apartment here and base yourself here to explore Zakynthos, you won’t be disappointed.
Soft golden sand, great restaurants, plenty of water activities and a lot of accommodation options make this one of the best areas on the island of Zakynthos.

A Swanky and Massive New French Restaurant Debuts Downtown in the Loop
The owners of Cochon Volant Brasserie today unveil their fifth Chicago restaurant, a new two-floor French restaurant in the Loop. Taureaux Tavern will eventually feature a 78-seat patio that will stay open all year and covered by a pergola. That patio will debut later this year, but the 288 seats inside the 7,000-square-foot space debut today at One Financial Place Plaza, 155 W. Van Buren Street.
The restaurant’s owners, WellDone Hospitality, announced Taureaux in March 2017. They’ve now brought on Chicago culinary veteran Mike Sheerin (Rockit, Blackbird, Trenchermen, Cicchetti) as executive chef. His menu includes daily specials like dover sole on Friday and other French staples like steak frites, roast chicken, and a $150 seafood tower. There’s also a French dip sandwich made with shaved wagyu beef.
Take a look at the lunch and dinner menus below. WellDone is a collaboration that includes Roland Liccioni of Les Nomades in Streeterville. He won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest in 1997.
Taureaux Tavern, 155 W. Van Buren Street at One Financial Place Plaza, open 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays.

All the Restaurants Opening Soon in Philly in One Handy List
Keep track of where you’ll be eating in the Philadelphia of the future with this continually updated list of notable bars, coffee shops, and restaurants in the works, from just-announced eateries months off to those about to open.
Since this is a look ahead, sometimes far ahead, several spots from the fall/winter 2017-18 list of Philly restaurants on the horizon are not open yet. Read about them here.
CALLOWHILL — The team behind Kensington Quarters and Cafe Lift is opening a restaurant inspired by a Chinese neighborhood in Mexico next to Union Transfer.
FISHTOWN — Hiroki Fujiyama, the longtime head sushi chef at Morimoto, is opening his own place. It shares a building with Wm. Mulherin’s Sons.
QUEEN VILLAGE — Crybaby Pasta & Wine Bar is replacing Ela at Third and Bainbridge streets. It’s from Bridget Foy and Paul Rodriguez of Bridget Foy’s, closed after a fire, and Carla Goncalves and David Gilberg of Koo Zee Doo, which closed five years ago.
CENTER CITY — Steak 48, a steakhouse with locations in Houston and Chicago, is opening in the Atlantic Building on the Avenue of the Arts.
WASHINGTON SQUARE WEST — A father-and-daughter team are opening Korean fast-casual restaurant Crunchik’n in the former Ugly Duckling space. They also have a Crunchik’n in Ocean City, New Jersey, but the plans for the Philly menu are a little different.
Ocean City eatery Crunchik’n, serving Korean fried chicken, bulgogi cheesesteaks, and kimchi fried rice balls, is opening in Philly

GAYBORHOOD/MIDTOWN VILLAGE — Chef Chatayee Venus is opening Chatayee Thai at 1227 Walnut Street, in what was Walnut Street Supper Club and then Cibo.
CENTER CITY — The Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant at the Four Seasons in the Comcast Technology Center — to go with Greg Vernick’s cafe and seafood restaurant — has a name. It will (not too surprisingly) be called Jean-Georges.
KENSINGTON — Mike Solomonov and Steve Cook of Zahav fame have a new project in the works in a former warehouse in Kensington. They’re also planning something at 12th and Sansom.
GAYBORHOOD/WASHINGTON SQUARE WEST — Joncarl Lachman of Noord is taking over the recently closed More Than Just Ice Cream for a breakfast, lunch, and brunch spot, Winkel.
CENTER CITY — Cherry Hill’s Classic Cake Co. heads into Philly with a cafe and bakery at Suburban Station (upstairs, not underground). It opens on Halloween.
CENTER CITY — The 1700 block of Chestnut Street is getting three new lunch spots, with Cava, Paris Baguette, and Ochatto setting up shop.

NEWBOLD — Chef Bobby Saritsoglou (formerly of Opa) and and Christina Kallas-Saritsoglou are opening Stina, a Mediterranean BYOB in South Philly (17th and Snyder) with a wood-fired oven and a charitable mission.
SOUTH STREET — Philly’s favorite fried chicken and doughnut shop is opening on South Street. Look for Federal Donuts to be up and running on 6th and South in late September. STATUS: Open
RITTENHOUSE — Stock, the hit Southeast Asian BYOB in Fishtown, is opening a second location, this one in Rittenhouse at 1935 Chestnut Street. Look for it to be serving pho and banh mi by the very end of August, if not the following week. STATUS: Open

EAST PASSYUNK AVENUE — Chef Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran of Barbuzzo, Lolita, Bud & Marilyn’s, Jamonera, and Little Nonna’s are heading south for their next projects. They recently bought multiple properties on the same block of East Passyunk Avenue, but the concepts for the new restaurants haven’t been fleshed out yet.
RITTENHOUSE — Stats on 17th will do double duty as a sports bar and a nightclub when it opens early September at 111 S. 17th Street. STATUS: Open
WEST PHILLY — Trolley Car Station, a two-story restaurant at the new Trolley Portal Gardens— University City District’s greener, prettier reimagining of the 40th Street Trolley Portal at 40th and Baltimore — should be open in a few weeks. STATUS: Open
ITALIAN MARKET — Casual Greek restaurant Koukouzeli is opening this month in the Italian Market, at 1134 S. 9th Street. It’s a cozy space with seats for 22, plus takeout. STATUS: Open
CENTER CITY — City Winery, a restaurant, winery, and concert venue rolled into one, is opening its first Philly-area location at the revamped Gallery mall, now called Fashion District Philadelphia. It’s scheduled to be up and running starting September 2019.

FISHTOWN — The team behind Mistral in King of Prussia and Princeton and Elements in Princeton heads to Philly with Aether Fishtown, a seafood spot at 1832 Frankford Avenue. Look for lobster rolls, shrimp po’boys, oysters, and biodynamic wines when the restaurant opens late summer, serving dinner only.
RITTENHOUSE — Prolific restaurateur Michael Schulson — who already has a steakhouse in the works next to his restaurants Double Knot and Sampan, plus an Italian restaurant opening this summer next to his Harp & Crown — has something planned just off Rittenhouse Square as well.
ART MUSEUM — Famed architect Frank Gehry is in the process of redesigning the Philadelphia Museum of Art (built in 1928) as part of a $196 million project that should be done by 2020. But much sooner than that, diners will get to check out a new Gehry-designed restaurant at the museum. Stir will open this coming October. STATUS: Open
Freebyrd, a fried chicken shop, is opening in the Bourse food hall
Freebyrd [official photo]
OLD CITY — Fried chicken purveyor Freebyrd joins a Bourse Marketplace lineup that already includes everything from poke to grilled cheese to Korean tacos. The enormous new food hall is opening in Old City, across from Independence Mall, around the end of the summer.
CENTER CITY — Details of James Beard Award-winning chef Greg Vernick’s second restaurant have been revealed. Vernick Fish, opening at the upcoming Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia inside the new Comcast tower at 19th and Arch streets, will focus on seafood, with seats for 200 across the main dining room, bar, private dining room, and outdoor patio. That one’s going into the ground floor — on the second level, the chef is opening all-day cafe Vernick Coffee Bar.

FISHTOWN — Here’s an unusual one to look forward to: Fabrika, at 1108 Frankford Avenue, is a combination of restaurant and performance venue. Co-owner Ylia Dzlieri describes it as “reminiscent of a dinner theater in the 1930s and ’40s.”
FISHTOWN — More sandwiches and cheesesteaks are on the way. Marijuana activist N.A. Poe tells Philly Mag his upcoming Poe’s Sandwich Joint at 1429 Marlborough Street will sell munchies food.
KENSINGTON — Neighborhood pub Sutton’s from Niall Murphy, a longtime bartender at Fergie’s, is opening at 1706 N. 5th Street.
PHILLY — Vegan star chef Matthew Kenney is bringing a branch of his pizzeria Double Zero to Philly. He’s confirmed the project but the exact location isn’t finalized yet.
May 10
NEWBOLD — The East Passyunk Avenue restaurant strip makes the leap over Broad Street and onto West Passyunk with The Thirsty Soul, a church-themed cocktail bar with a menu of New Orleans-meets-Philly fare like catfish beignets, “yo’boys,” and jambalaya mac and cheese. As for the theme, expect pews, a confessional, a stained-glass bar top, and other religious accoutrements. STATUS: Open
MIDTOWN VILLAGE/GAYBORHOOD — One of the best Korean restaurants in Philly is opening a second location. Seorabol, now in the North Philly neighborhood of Olney, is heading to 1326 Spruce Street. Look for tabletop Korean barbecue, stews and soups, noodle dishes, and more.
CENTER CITY — FCM Hospitality (Morgan’s Pier, Dolphin Tavern, Parks on Tap) is about to open Harper’s Garden, an indoor/outdoor venue at 31 S. 18th Street. The outdoor part is on the patio at the Duane Morris Plaza and seats 100. It’s going for a beer garden vibe with twinkling lights and greenery. The indoor restaurant seats 50 (there’s also a private event space upstairs). In the kitchen is Ben Moore, most recently at Wister in Old City. His menu at Harper’s Garden includes flatbreads, toasts, and sandwiches using bread from Lost Bread Co. STATUS: Open
FISHTOWN — Lou Boquila, chef-owner of Perla on East Passyunk Avenue, is heading north to Fishtown for another Filipino restaurant. Sarvida, at 300 E. Girard Avenue, will be a more casual eatery with small plates and weekend brunch. Both are BYOB. STATUS: Open
OLD CITY — Another new food vendor is signed on to the upcoming Bourse food hall. Barry’s Buns, a bakery with a location at the Market at the Fareway in Chestnut Hill, is bringing its sticky buns, cinnamon rolls, babka, and butter cake to the Bourse. Owner Joel Singer was formerly the regional bakery associate coordinator for Whole Foods. He also honed his craft as assistant pastry chef at The Rittenhouse hotel. Singer will be baking his buns and cakes on site. STATUS: Open
MIDTOWN VILLAGE/GAYBORHOOD — Michael Schulson, the chef/restaurateur behind Double Knot, Sampan, and Harp & Crown, is opening a steakhouse at 116 S. 13th Street, right next to Double Knot in what was until recently computer shop Springboard Media. He’s shooting for a fall opening. Schulson is also working on an Italian restaurant with the Termini Brothers Bakery family. That one should open this summer.
SOUTH PHILLY — The Lipkin family ran a kosher bakery in South Philly, relocated it to Northeast Philly in 1975, and sold it Steven Nawalany, a longtime customer, in 2016. And now Nawalany is bringing the bakery back to its roots. A second location of Lipkin’s Bakery will open within the next few weeks at 2153 S. Hancock Street, between Snyder Avenue and Jackson Street.
April 9
MIDTOWN VILLAGE — Shake Shack is opening another Philly location, next to the upcoming East Market development. The burger, fries, and shake specialist is going into 105 S. 12th Street, in what was previously a cupcake shop. Expect it to open towards the end of this year. STATUS: Open
WASHINGTON SQUARE — P.J. Clarke’s is finally under construction in the historic Curtis building at 6th and Walnut. It’s setting up shop next to the Dream Garden, the beautiful indoor mosaic mural created by Maxfield Parrish and Louis Comfort Tiffany in the early 1900s. The restaurant brings its own sense of history: The original P.J. Clarke’s is a New York institution that’s been around since 1884. Current owner Philip Scotti is originally from the Philly area and the chef is Ned Maddock, who was previously at Brigantessa. STATUS: Open
NORTH BROAD — Robert and Benjamin Bymun, the brothers behind South, Warmdaddy’s, Relish, and Green Soul (and the closed Zanzibar Blue) are taking over the recently shuttered Alla Spina to open a second Green Soul. The new restaurant, at 1410 Mt. Vernon Street right next to South, will offer lighter takes on Southern dishes and live entertainment. STATUS: Open
RITTENHOUSE — Top Chef’s Jennifer Carroll is coming back to her hometown of Philly to open Spice Finch with chef Billy Riddle, (also Carroll’s fiancé). The restaurant, located at 220 S. 17th Street, is a Mediterranean bistro and cocktail bar. STATUS: Open
CENTER CITY — Attico is opening on the roof of the new Cambria hotel at 219 S. Broad Street. The spacious restaurant will have plenty of outdoor seating for soaking in the city views. STATUS: Open
DOWNINGTOWN — Enoteca Tredici is expanding to the suburbs. The chic Mediterranean restaurant, which has locations in Philly (114 S. 13th Street), Bryn Mawr, and Washington, D.C., is opening in Downingtown at 20 East Lancaster Avenue. It will be big, at 9,000 square feet, and have an outdoor patio. Owner Greg Dodge, who also has Zavino, plans to give the building a $1.5-million renovation, so the restaurant won’t be open for several months.

RITTENHOUSE — Here’s a new lunch spot, Center City workers: The PokéSpot, a fast-casual Hawaiian eatery out of New York City, is opening at 18th and Chestnut next month. STATUS: Open
CENTER CITY — And here’s another lunch option. Waterfront Gourmet Café & Deli is opening its fourth location, this one across from City Hall on the ground floor of the Residences at The Ritz-Carlton. The menu is long, with lots of choices for breakfast sandwiches, hoagies, panini, and salads, plus Illy coffee. STATUS: Open
EAST KENSINGTON — Vientiane Café, a Laotian-Thai BYOB in West Philly, is opening a second location. Vientiane Bistro is going into 2537 Kensington Avenue, next to Cafe Pho Ga Thanh Thanh and across from Thang Long, two pho destinations. The menu will feature traditional Lao dishes. STATUS: Open
EAST PASSYUNK — Vietnamese sandwich and bubble tea shop Teas N’ Mi is heading to 1907 E. Passyunk Avenue. Look for traditional banh mi and a Vietnamese-Indian hybrid sandwich the owners are calling a “phoratha” (pho flavors on paratha bread). STATUS: Open

March 5
ITALIAN MARKET — Ryan Rubino, whose family owns the 100-plus-year-old Ralph’s Italian Restaurant, and Anthony Barone, formerly a chef at Ralph’s, are opening Market at 943 S. 9th Street in what was Restaurant Neuf. Market will be, appropriately enough, a market during the day. At night the space will turn into a BYOB with a new American menu. It’s shooting for a June 1 opening (and the name is subject to change). Rubino and Barone also own Bar One nearby, at 767 S. 9th Street. STATUS: Open
QUEEN VILLAGE — M2O Burgers & Salads is going into 701 S. 5th Street, a couple blocks south of South Street. The quick-serve restaurant’s m.o. is made-to-order burgers and salads. The burgers come as beef or veggie on a potato or pretzel bun or wrapped in lettuce, with a choice of cheese, toppings, and sauce. M2O is from the team behind HaveABurger in Havertown. Look for it to open this month.
ARDMORE — The Bercy is taking over the former Primavera Pizza Kitchen space at 7 E. Lancaster Avenue, in a one-time bank building that dates back to the 1920s (it has that telltale high-ceilinged design). It’s from Justin Weathers and Joe Monnich of Stove & Tap in Lansdale and Al Pastor in Exton and it’s going for a classic French brasserie vibe, with pasta, steaks, a raw bar, and wood-fired dishes. Both Weathers and Monnich used to work for Stephen Starr. Monnish was the executive chef at Parc and Dandelion. Their newest venture should open early April. STATUS: Open
SOUTH PHILLY — The second location of SOMO, this one with an NFL star on board, is opening next month at 3101 S. 13th Street (13th and Packer). SOMO SoPhi is a restaurant, bar, lounge, and club all rolled into one, spanning three stories and 5,000 square feet. Designer/restaurateur James Morrissey of SOMO in Manayunk is opening it with Jahri and Takia Evans. Jahri Evans, an all-pro offensive guard for the Green Bay Packers, is originally from Philly. STATUS: Open
OLD CITY — Famed New York City falafel and shawarma shop Mamoun’s is heading to Philly. The restaurant is going into 300 Market Street on the ground floor of a new apartment building. The original opened in Greenwich Village in 1971. STATUS: Open
RITTENHOUSE — Speaking of Middle Eastern fare, Hummus Republic is opening its first outpost outside of California, at 115 S. 18th Street, reports Philadelphia magazine. Expect falafel, shawarma, vegan proteins, and veggies available in build-your-old bowls, pitas, and salads, plus tahini shakes— a concept Philadelphians are already obsessed with thanks to Goldie. It won’t start serving for a few months. [Philly Mag] STATUS: Open
EAST KENSINGTON — A new doughnut shop opening at 2557 Amber Street is the result of an unusual collaboration. Four musicians and band managers, including Ben Walsh of Tigers Jaw, Joseph Marro of The Early November, Zack Zarrillo, and Scott Luciano, are teaming up withReAnimator Coffee for Hello Donuts, which serves both traditional and vegan varieties. This will be the first brick-and-mortar location for the bakery, which currently focuses on wholesale and pop-ups.
SOUTH STREET — Vietnamese BYOB Ngon Ngon is opening just off South Street, at 615 S. 3rd Street right next to South Street Philly Bagels. Look for pho, broken rice and vermicelli dishes, and banh mi. STATUS: Open

A spread of food at Buttonwood
Aleppo Palace (25 Central Sq., Central Square, Cambridge): A renovation and rebranding of Moody’s Falafel Palace, a longtime late-night standby in Central Square.
Blackbird Doughnuts (100 Holton St., Brighton, Boston): This is the fourth location for the local doughnut chain, which is related to the Gallows and Banyan in the South End. This location includes retail space as well as production space.
Bruins Bar (Logan Airport — Terminal A, East Boston): Like Shōjō (below), this is part of a massive wave of new openings at the airport. As the name suggests, it’s a hockey-themed sports bar.
Buttonwood (51 Lincoln St., Newton): The Sycamore and Little Big Diner sibling first debuted at the beginning of 2018, quickly building a fanbase and snagging a good Globe review, when an electrical fire shut it down. Now, after nearly a year of renovations, it’s back, serving pork schnitzel, cheeseburgers, whole grilled branzino, and more.
Courtyard Tea Room and Map Room Tea Lounge (Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): BPL dining (and drinking) has received an upgrade with a rebranding of the Courtyard Restaurant and the addition of a lounge serving tea-infused cocktails and snacks.
The Derby Restaurant (189 Washington St., Salem): The Tavern in the Square team rebranded the Salem location into the Derby Restaurant, which is meant to have more of a local feel and serves dishes like po’ boy tacos, steak tips, and more.

Fiorella’s Express (575 Washington St., Wellesley): This casual Italian spot — part of a small local chain — took over the former Susu Bakery space.
Fomu (140 Brookline Ave., Fenway, Boston): This is the fourth permanent location for the local vegan ice cream chain.
The Grateful Dedham Diner (573 High St., Dedham Square, Dedham): This punnily named diner took over a former D’Angelo’s space and serves all-day breakfast.
Gustazo Cuban Kitchen & Bar (2067 Massachusetts Ave., Porter Square, Cambridge): This Waltham favorite for Cuban food has expanded to the former Elephant Walk space in Cambridge and features a cocktail list by Backbar’s Sam Treadway.
Horse Thieves Tavern (585 High St., Dedham): This “modern interpretation on a traditional New England tavern,” as it describes itself, serves roasted cod, fried chicken sandwiches, loaded Hasselback potatoes, cast iron s’mores, and more.
In the Game (535 Lowell St., Peabody): This entertainment venue — which features laser tag, bowling, and other attractions — also has a bar and restaurant.
Kane’s Donuts (Essex Landing, Rte. 1, Saugus): This is the second Saugus location — and third overall — for the popular doughnut shop. This new one is on the site of a former mini golf course known for an orange dinosaur statue (which remains standing).
Lobstah on a Roll (135 Lafayette St., Salem): The seafood restaurant from Boston’s South End has expanded to the North Shore with its mega lobster rolls.
Masala Square (23 Union Sq., Union Square, Somerville): This family-run restaurant focuses on food from the northern Indian state of Punjab and offers plenty of gluten-free and vegan options as well as affordable lunch deals.
Night Shift Brewing at Lovejoy Wharf (1 Lovejoy Wharf, Suite 101, West End, Boston): The popular Everett-based brewery expanded to Boston proper with this giant new space — brewery, taproom, restaurant, cafe, and coffee roasting facility.
Pho Paris (906 Washington St., Braintree): Pho and other Vietnamese food in the former Pho Vietnam space.
Popover King (74 Canal St., West End, Boston): Popovers stuffed with a variety of sweet and savory fillings, plus other New England-y baked goods and more.
Purefections Chocolate (1348 Hancock St., Quincy): This is a relocation for the sweet shop, from South Quincy to Quincy Center.
Real (145 Lincoln Rd., Lincoln): Located in the former Lincoln Kitchen and Aka Bistro space, Real comes from co-owner and chef Tom Fosnot, who was the longtime executive chef at Groton’s acclaimed Gibbet Hill.
Sarcastic Swine BBQ Restaurant and Catering (988 Bedford St., Abington): Brisket, pulled pork, hush puppies, and more — not to mention burritos.
Shōjō (Logan Airport — Terminal C, East Boston): The Chinatown favorite has expanded to the airport with favorites like the shadowless fries and the Shojonator burger, as well as all-day congee, a full bar, and grab-and-go meals meant to be flight-friendly.
Tatte Bakery & Cafe (201 Washington St., Downtown Boston): The local bakery chain keeps expanding. This one makes a dozen (and it’s the second in downtown Boston).
Usushi Cafe (474 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington): Rice bowls, sushi rolls, and bubble tea.
Vaanga (102 Water St., Downtown Boston): This self-described “crazy Indian joint” comes from the Godavari team and serves samosa burgers, “desi tacos,” and “baerittos.”
Closings

A pita full of falafel at Amsterdam Falafelshop
Amsterdam Falafelshop (248 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville): This had been the first local outpost of a small DC-based falafel chain — and the last remaining local one. (A Kenmore Square location opened and closed during the Somerville location’s lifespan.)
Cafe Jaffa (48 Gloucester St., Back Bay, Boston): This Middle Eastern restaurant had been open for close to 30 years, serving stuffed grape leaves, falafel, and more.
La Perle Caribbean Restaurant (41 Bow St., Everett): Owner Valery Joseph is actively working to find a new location for the Caribbean restaurant, which closed as a result of disruptive casino construction nearby.
Sassafras (668 Broadway, Ball Square, Somerville): This vegetarian reinvention of Eat at Jumbo’s may end up living on in some form, such as a meal delivery service, so stay tuned for updates.
Sorella’s (388 Centre St., Jamaica Plain): This neighborhood breakfast staple had been around for 36 years.

Travel diary: Malaga
Málaga is a world apart from the adjoining Costa del Sol: a historic and culturally rich provincial capital which has long lived in the shadow of the iconic Andalusian cities of Granada, Córdoba and Seville. Yet, it has rapidly emerged as the province's city of culture with its so-called 'mile of art' being compared to Madrid, and its dynamism and fine dining to Barcelona.
The tastefully restored historic centre is a delight: its Gothic cathedral is surrounded by narrow pedestrian streets flanked by traditional and modern bars, and shops that range from idiosyncratic and family owned, to urban-chic and contemporary. Cast your eyes up to enjoy a skyline that reflects the city’s eclectic character; church spires jostle for space with russet-red tiled roofs and lofty apartment buildings while, like a grand old dame, the 11th-century Gibralfaro castle sits grandly aloft and provides the best view of all. The former rundown port has also been grandly rebuilt and cruise-line passengers are now boosting the city's coffers and contributing to the overall increase in tourism to the city.
Málaga is a municipality, capital of the Province of Málaga, in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, Spain. With a population of 569,130 in 2015, it is the second-most populous city of Andalusia and the sixth-largest in Spain. The southernmost large city in Europe, it lies on the Costa del Sol of the Mediterranean, about 100 kilometers (62.14 miles) east of the Strait of Gibraltar and about 130 km (80.78 mi) north of Africa.
Málaga's history spans about 2,800 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the world. It was founded by the Phoenicians as Malaka about 770 BC, and from the 6th century BC was under the hegemony of Ancient Carthage. Then, from 218 BC, it was ruled by the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire as Malaca (Latin). After the fall of the empire and the end of Visigothic rule, it was under Islamic rule as Mālaqah for 800 years, but in 1487, the Crown of Castille gained control after the Reconquista. The archaeological remains and monuments from the Phoenician, Roman, Arabic and Christian eras make the historic center of the city an "open museum", displaying its history of nearly 3,000 years. This important cultural infrastructure and the artistic heritage have culminated in the nomination of Málaga as a candidate for the 2016 European Capital of Culture. The internationally acclaimed painter
and sculptor Pablo Picasso, Hebrew poet and Jewish philosopher Solomon Ibn Gabirol and the actor Antonio Banderas were born in Málaga. The magnum opus of Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona, "Malagueña", is named for the music of this region of Spain. The most important business sectors in Málaga are tourism, construction and technology services, but other sectors such as transportation and logistics are beginning to expand. The Andalusia Technology Park (PTA), located in Málaga, has enjoyed significant growth since its inauguration in 1992. Málaga is the main economic and financial centre of southern Spain, home of the region's largest bank, Unicaja, and the fourth-ranking city in economic activity in Spain behind Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.
Why go?
Eating just-caught sardines by the sea is one of life’s great simple pleasures, and the beaches either side of Malaga are the perfect place to do it – particularly after a morning at the Picasso and Carmen Thyssen museums. Unlike some Spanish cities, it does not wind down in summer, and is particularly lively during the Malaga Fair in mid-August, when even the most reserved visitors might find themselves joining the locals for a twirl in the streets. If you haven’t been for a while, you’ll be amazed at how it has been spruced up. Chic boutiques, gastrobars and cool cafés have sprung up alongside the traditional taverns in the winding lanes in the heart of the city, while the waterfront has been developed with a promenade, bars, restaurants and shops - and new this year is the Pompidou Centre. Although there is plenty to see and do, Malaga is really a place to kick back and just enjoy the laidback Mediterranean vibe.
When and Where
It rarely gets really cold in Malaga, and it is often warm enough to sit at pavement cafés during the day even in December and January. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit. Although not as well known as Seville Holy Week, the Easter processions are among the most important in Spain. For most visitors, Málaga is simply a gateway to the beach resorts of the Costa del Sol, with few venturing far from the airport or into the city. Well, they’re all missing a trick because this once-shabby port has undergone something of a reinvention. There’s a sparkling new waterfront and millions of euros have been pumped into the art scene, thanks to mayor Francisco de la Torre’s vision to turn his city into a cultural hub, with a branch of the Parisian Pompidou Centre among the latest museum openings. The Alcazaba fortress, Málaga’s more modest answer to Granada’s Alhambra, sits proudly in the historic centre – a maze of gardens and fountains – and above it 10th-century Gibralfaro castle stands guard over the coast. Round the corner lies the vast Renaissance cathedral, nicknamed La Manquita (“one-armed woman”) because its south tower was mysteriously left unbuilt. While the city beaches are nothing to write home about, the food definitely is. The subtropical climate and maritime location mean there’s plentiful fresh produce, exceptional local wine, melt-in-the- mouth jamón and top seafood – the locals are nicknamed boquerones (anchovies) because of the quantities they eat. There are countless great bars and restaurants, and more opening all the time, but eat late if you don’t want to look like a tourist – Malagueños go out late, and dining after 10pm is the norm. With dozens of low-cost flights a week, Málaga ticks all the boxes for an alternative city break or a stopover on the way to a beach holiday. It’s just surprising more people haven’t cottoned on yet.
Do
Málaga’s cathedral was started in the 16th century on the site of the former mosque. Of the mosque, only the Patio de los Naranjos survives, a small courtyard of fragrant orange trees.
Inside, the fabulous domed ceiling soars 40m into the air, while the vast colonnaded nave houses an enormous cedar-wood choir. Aisles give access to 15 chapels with gorgeous 18th- century retables and religious art. Climb the tower (200 steps) to enjoy stunning panoramic views of the city skyline and coast. Building the cathedral was an epic project that took some 200 years. Such was the project’s cost that by 1782 it was decided that work would stop. One of the two bell towers was left incomplete, hence the cathedral’s well-worn nickname, La Manquita (the one-armed lady). The cathedral’s museum displays a collection of religious items covering a period of 500 years.
Uncovered in 1951, this Roman theatre slap- bang in the city centre had lain hidden for many hundreds of years. It was built in the time of Augustus (1st century AD) and remains relatively well preserved. An adjacent interpretive centre has touch screens and some artefacts dug up from the site. The theatre is particularly evocative at night with the Alcazaba illuminated behind it. No time to visit Granada’s Alhambra? Then Málaga’s Alcazaba can provide a taster. The entrance is next to the Roman amphitheatre, from where a meandering path climbs amid lush greenery: crimson bougainvillea, lofty palms, fragrant jasmine bushes and rows of orange trees. Extensively restored, this palace-fortress dates from the 11th-century Moorish period; the caliphal horseshoe arches, courtyards and bubbling fountains are evocative of this influential period in Málaga’s history. Don’t miss the small archaeological museum located within the former servants’ quarters of the Nazari palace, with its exhibits of Moorish ceramics and pottery.
The Museo Picasso has an enviable collection of 204 works, 155 donated and 49 loaned to the museum by Christine Ruiz-Picasso (wife of Paul, Picasso’s eldest son) and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (his grandson), and includes some wonderful paintings of the family, including the heartfelt Paulo con gorro blanco (Paulo with a white cap), a portrait of Picasso’s eldest son painted in the 1920s.Don’t miss the Phoenician, Roman, Islamic and Renaissance archaeological remains in the museum’s basement, discovered during construction works. There are also excellent year-round temporary exhibitions. Besides the grand, marble-paved main shopping street Marqués de Larios, where shoppers can find high-street and designer names at bargain
prices, thanks to the weak euro, Málaga is a treat for those who like discovering little independent boutiques. Calle Andrés Pérez, in what was a run-down part of town, is also a good place to browse. The shops and restaurants clubbed together to clean up the street and pay for street lights. Top finds include organic clothing at ColorHueso (no 7), antiques at Patio Almanzora (no 5) and vintage goods at Quasipercaso (no 1). For beautiful handmade jewellery, try P&C in the old centre (Calle Santa María 13). The newly hip Soho district is being turned into an open-air gallery by the Maus (Málaga Arte Urbano Soho) project which has invited big-name international artists to create artwork on the city’s walls. There are giant animal murals by the Belgian Roa, pop-art style creations by D*Face and smaller works by local artists. More work to be added by Kenny Scharf, Aryz and Abraham Lacalle soon. Pick up a map and explore by yourself or join a guided tour by CAC (three free tours at 10, 11 and 12 on Mondays). For another alternative arty experience head to Plaza De Jesus de La Pasion, where artist Valerio “fishes for people” by dangling a rose and a note inviting guests to his studio to have their eye sketched for free for his “Eyecylopedia” or just to browse his work. Valerio is the man behind an alternative “art currency” circulating in the city – “the Valerio”, notes made from his printed etchings are being accepted by a range of “wholesome” businesses, from yoga studios to cafes.
Malaga's port is one of the oldest ports in the world with over three thousand years of antiquity, it is now one of the most important cruise ship terminals in Spain. Bringing many thousands of passengers onto Malaga’s sunny shores every year. The port is conveniently located near the city centre, within easy walking distance to all of Malaga’s cultural and historical highlights.
One of the city's biggest parks is right across the road, as is the Alcazaba, the Gibralfaro castle and its just a short walk to Malaga's historic centre and the main shopping areas - including Calle Larios. A visit to all is easily doable in a few hours. For cruise ship passengers, the location is ideal, you can be in the heart of Malaga within five minutes. Until fairly recently, Malaga's port was off-limits to members of the public. Over the last ten years, there have been two projects aimed specifically at Malaga's port and the surrounding areas. An expansion plan and the city-port plan. The expansion plan is ongoing and has so far opened up 11 docks as shipping and cruise ship terminals. There are now over 700,000 passengers arriving on Malaga's shores from 220 different cruise liners. This number has been growing rapidly over the last few years. Malaga's port is now one of the most important in Spain. The city-port plan was devised to develop the port area for recreational and commercial use. The ultimate aim of the city- port plan was to attract private investment - something that hasn't happened as quickly as hoped. Its two biggest projects to date, have been the openings of Muelles Uno and Dos. Quays one and two.
The quays are situated side-by-side and the names are are often used interchangeably by local Malagueños. Muelle Uno was opened at the end of 2011. The 14,000m2 shopping and commerce centre is home to restaurants, shops and has underground parking for over 1000 cars. The most exclusive part of the port, it is home to Malaga's onlyMichelin-starred restaurant (Jose Carlos Garcia's) and has a marina for luxurious yachts, known as "Ricardo Gross." Despite its exclusivity, there are also numerous other cafés and bars that cater for all tastes and budgets (including an Indian restaurant). Muelle Dos is home to the beautiful waterfront promenade invitingly named “The Palm Garden of Surprises,” "Palmeral de las Sorpresas” in Spanish. The promenade is an ideal place for families with small children. There are ample gardens, several children’s playgrounds, water features, and various activities to keep them entertained for hours. There are also numerous benches and quiet corners for people to sit and soak up the atmosphere.
The whole complex is very modern and elegantly designed. There are 420 recently planted palm trees lining the walkway and a further 7400 trees and tropical plants that make up the gardens.
The whole area offers a surreal, modern feel to it. You can fully understand why Malagueños are proud of the newest addition to their city's sights. There is no better place to enjoy an evening's ‘paseo’ and a bit of people watching.Very different to the old Malaga we all know and love.
