How Being a Woman in Hardcore Helped Me Learn to Love Myself
Written by Jen Moglia. Graphic by Laura Cross.
Since this is my first piece written for Girls Behind the Rock Show, I figured that I should introduce myself; hi, my name is Jennifer, but most people call me Jen. I live on Long Island in New York, and my favorite things include my cats, the color pink, giving gifts to my Animal Crossing villagers, and watching sports. Above all else, however, I love music.
I frequently refer to music as the love of my life. It somehow plays a role in everything that I do. I got my first iPod when I was five years old, stacked with everything from Miranda Cosgrove and Avril Lavigne to Tool and Deftones. Some of my favorite memories growing up are sitting in my pink and purple bedroom singing and dancing along to Paramore’s crushcrushcrush and Fall Out Boy’s Thnks Fr Th Mmrs on the local alternative radio station. I danced for 12 years, played cello for seven, and am currently a wannabe ukulele rockstar after buying one on impulse and starting to teach myself how to play four years ago. Even on the simplest, barely noticeable levels, music has been everywhere in my life for as long as I can remember; even now, I can’t complete a basic task without a song playing in my headphones.
Music became an even bigger part of my life when I started attending live shows. I went to my first concerts at age 10, seeing my two favorite artists - Nickelodeon boy band Big Time Rush and classic progressive rock band Rush - within one month of each other. By the time I was 15, I had been to my fair share of arena/seated shows with one or both of my parents, from Fifth Harmony to Fitz and the Tantrums to Alice in Chains. My first general admission show was seeing the Foo Fighters at Citi Field with both my mom and dad when I was 12, but my first pop-punk general admission show (yes, they’re different) came a few years later. I had the typical list of favorite bands that you would expect from a young teenager getting into alternative music: Neck Deep, Knuckle Puck, Real Friends, and State Champs.
In late 2018, I was able to see all four of these bands for the first time, and I am a firm believer that it changed the course of my life. I met, cried-during, and eventually got the setlist for Neck Deep at Stereo Garden on Long Island in September. I sang all of “Untitled” at the barricade for Knuckle Puck at SI Hall at the Fairgrounds in Syracuse in October. I had my first minor concussion scare (yay!) before Real Friends’ set at Irving Plaza in New York City in November. Finally, I crowd surfed for the first time during State Champs’ anniversary show for The Finer Things at House of Independents in Asbury Park in December. After just a few shows, I had fallen in love with this new brand of live music that I had just been introduced too. There was something so magical to me about skin covered in sweat and Sharpie marks, feet hurting from dancing in the pit all night, and meeting strangers on line outside the venue who would become your best friends and know your deepest secrets by the end of the night.
After making some friends at all of the pop-punk shows I was going to, they started to tell me that I should get into hardcore music. I was hesitant at first - the heaviest thing I had listened to at that point was nowhere near the snippets of hardcore that my friends had played for me - but, eventually, I decided to give it a chance. I was bored and home alone with nothing to do one night over the summer of 2019 when I listened to my first hardcore album, Laugh Tracks by Knocked Loose. Immediately, I got that gut feeling that you have when you know you’ve heard one of your favorite bands for the first time. I knew that this was something special that I was meant to find at this point in my life. For the rest of the summer, I worked my way through the rest of my friends’ hardcore and hardcore-adjacent recommendations, with Cost of Living by Incendiary, Stage Four by Touche Amore, You’re Not You Anymore by Counterparts, Time & Space by Turnstile, Springtime and Blind by Fiddlehead, Smile! Aren’t You Happy by Absence of Mine, Bad to my World by Backtrack, and Reality Approaches by Harms Way being some of my favorites. By the time the next school year started, I was hooked, and I already had tickets to my first few hardcore shows in the fall.
My first hardcore show was in November 2019, seeing Knocked Loose at Webster Hall in New York City - fitting, right? They were on tour supporting their new record A Different Shade of Blue, which I had become obsessed with the minute I heard it for the first time. Although I was ridiculously scared of getting stepped on and breaking all my bones (yes, that was an actual fear of mine), I had the time of my life at that show. There was something about this newer kind of live music that prompted a cathartic release, one that I hadn’t found anywhere else before. As soon as the show was over, I was counting the days until my next one.
My love for live hardcore music (and live music and hardcore music in general) has only grown since then, and that story sort of ends there. However, I want to go back to that first hardcore band that I listened to, Knocked Loose, and the album they put out that first summer that stole my heart. I was taken by storm as soon as the first notes of A Different Shade of Blue rang through my headphones, but something was different about the third track, A Serpent’s Touch, particularly the ending; I heard a voice that sounded a little bit more like my own.
This song features Emma Boster, who does vocals for one of my favorite hardcore bands right now, Dying Wish. When I heard A Serpent’s Touch for the first time, though, I had no idea who she was. I was used to the aggressive vocal delivery of frontmen in hardcore, particularly that of Knocked Loose’s Bryan Garris, but hearing it come from her changed my perspective on a lot of things. It’s not like the song was super angry and changed its tune to be lighter once the token girl came along; in her verse, Boster sings, “I watched the venom / Overcome your spirit / Jealousy holds you now / Distorting your appearance / Bleed out.” These were lyrics that held the same intensity that the lines screamed by the men held, and they sounded just as cool coming out of her mouth. As cheesy as it sounds, it had never even occurred to me that women had a place in this new world that I had discovered. The audiences in the live videos I watched (and eventually at the shows I attended) were made up of mostly men who looked bigger and older than me. When I did start going to shows, most of the non-man population consisted of my friends and I. Emma Boster, along with so many others, began to open my eyes to the fact that a place for people like me existed in this community. It didn’t matter that I had bright red hair or liked butterflies or wore pink - I was just as much a part of this magic as the men multiple feet taller than me with tattoo-covered arms, and I belonged there just as much as they did.
As time went on and I got more involved in the genre’s music and community, I discovered more bands with women in them, and it only fueled this fire of empowerment inside of me. When I felt insecure, I’d watch live sets from Krimewatch, a hardcore band from New York City, just half an hour away from my hometown. They have multiple women as members, including their energetic badass of a vocalist, Rhylli Ogiura. Year of the Knife became one of my all-time favorites, and their bassist Madison Watkins became a serious inspiration to me; the way that she can balance killing it on stage and running the cutest, most pink apparel brand I’ve ever seen (aptly titled Candy Corpse) amazes me. Even some of the bands I’ve found more recently have had an impact on me. I started listening to Initiate last year when their EP Lavender came out, and their beautifully colorful cover art caught my eye before I had heard any of their songs. Their vocalist, Crystal Pak, is also a woman, and she’s insanely talented. Discovering this kind of representation in this new universe that I had come to feel so at home in introduced me to a world of confidence and determination that I had never known before.
When people ask me why I love hardcore so much, I often give the easy answer; “the music sounds good.” If the person allows me to ramble on for a little longer, the answer becomes much more emotional and cheesy. Hardcore taught me that speaking up for what I believe in is important, and if there’s something I’m passionate about, it’s worth shouting about. I became familiar with this when listening to one of my favorite bands ever, Incendiary (the second hardcore band I ever checked out), before quickly realizing that politics are a pretty common topic within the genre - it’s what this music was practically built on. The first time I heard their vocalist Brendan Garrone singing about police brutality and injustice on songs like Force of Neglect and Sell Your Cause, I realized that there is so much more to music than just sounding good.
However, at its core, the thing I love so much about hardcore is what it taught me about being a woman. Growing up, I was the loud girl with the personality bigger than the room who always had something to say and had a never ending supply of excitement about just about everything. As I got older, I was taught that this was not okay. People didn’t like how enthusiastic I was about everything, or that I constantly had new ideas and new discoveries I wanted to talk about. As cliche as it sounds, I felt like everyone around me was trying to dull my sparkle, especially some of the men that I was encountering on a day-to-day basis. Even when I started to come to terms with my big and bright personality, in turn also coming to terms with my own femininity, I was told that this wasn’t how girls acted. I had to pick one - I could watch Disney princess movies and wear Hello Kitty hair clips, or I could be outspoken about my beliefs; but never both. The women that I mentioned earlier, along with so, so many more, helped me unlearn these toxic mindsets. Seeing someone like Emma Boster take the stage and scream ferociously for a full set helped me see that I could be a girl and still be a powerhouse. Following Madi Watkins around on social media showed me that I could love bands like Year of the Knife and also love heart-shaped purses and wear pink from head to toe. My aggression and passion didn’t make me any less of a woman, and my femininity didn’t make me any less of a force to be reckoned with.
So, at the end of this love letter to hardcore and the women who run it, I say this; thank you for teaching me that I don’t have to shrink myself anymore. It has made a world of a difference.

We Found Wonderland
Summary: Trapped in the past after the S3 finale, Killian and Emma are forced to fade into the background as a newly married couple in a village while Rumplestilskin works on the portal to send them back to the future. (No Marian)
What challenges will they face, after all it’s only pretending to be married after all right?

Huge thanks to @captain-emmajones for reading this over for me as I was going insane after editing it for weeks
Happy New Year to all! They say to start the year off as you mean to go on, and my goal for 2021 is to write more so I really hope you enjoy it!
Set just after the CS movie, no Marian.
We found Wonderland
You and I got lost in it
And we pretended it could last forever
________
Emma had realised on this trip that Storybrooke was her home. Not Boston or New York. Yes things were messy and dangerous in Storybrooke. But it was home. It was where her family was.
She had longed for a family for 28 years especially after the foster system failed her and after Neal abandoned her. But when the boy she gave up for adoption asked her to come home with her, it changed her life. Even if she didn’t believe in the curse at first, she knew it was a place she could eventually call home.
She wasn’t scared anymore. For once, she was excited about the future and what it would bring. And Hook.
This trip had shown a side to him she hadn’t seen before. She knew he had feelings for her, and as much as she tried to suppress her own feelings for him, he was different this trip. He wasn’t pining for her or making his usual stupid flirty jokes. It was clear he cared about her family, he wasn’t selfish.
Kissing Other Hook was an adventure. But seeing her Hook get jealous and punch the other him was even better. She could see in his eyes it was killing him that she was flirting with the other him, way more than she had with him. And she wasn’t going to deny that she enjoyed it.
“You alright love?” Hook's voice pulled her away from her thoughts.
She smiles at him as they walk into Rumple’s Castle, “Yeah. Just excited to get home.”
“Well dearie it’s gonna be awhile before you can do that.” Rumples voice cuts through as they walk into the great hall.
“What the bloody hell does that mean Crocodile?” Hook asks, anger in his voice.
Rumple just laughs, “well it’s not just a portal that I could do easily for you. Time travel has never been done before, except for you two. It’ll take me around a year to create that portal for you two.”
“IM SORRY-A YEAR?”
“A YEAR?”
Both Emma and Hook's voices respond to this sudden realisation.
“You’re telling me, it’s gonna be a year, until we can go home to the future?” Emma asks, hoping she heard wrong.
“Were you not listening?” Rumple asks.
“So we have to stay here for a year while you figure out the stupid portal?” Hook looks angry, like he could use the dagger on Rumple so quickly.
“W-what about preserving the future?” Emma asks, she can’t stay here for a year. She can’t.
“Well you’ve already messed up your parents timeline and they’re still on track. I have no use for you in my castle, so I’ll place you two under a glamour spell in a small little village where hopefully you’ll make little impact. After you’re gone, I can erase the minds of the villagers.” Rumple explains while Emma is still trying to wrap her head around staying here for a whole year.
“My parents just met and are on track to get married and have me. It’s around 2 years before I’m born and the curse strikes. The portal will be ready by then right?”
Rumple just rolls his eyes at Emma. “I’m not an idiot. I say it’ll be a year, it’ll be a year.”
“Then what the bloody hell do we do?” Hook slams his hand down on the table.
Rumple looks as though he could kill him, but he just laughs. “Well I considered keeping you here in my dungeon. But alas I already have my help. You two will be a newly married couple that just moved to this part of the land. You can work at the tavern or something, I don’t really care. I’ll be in touch when the portal is ready.”
“Married?” The two exclaim at the same time.
“Are you two having trouble hearing?” Rumple asks, rolling his eyes.
—————
After probably an hour quarrelling with the Dark One about their arrangement, they’re transported to a small village and a hut that they guess they would have to call home for the next year. It had one large room, with one bed in the corner, a fireplace and what seemed like a stove to the left of the door and a few chairs by the table. It was small alright, and she had no clue how they were going to last a year in this place.
“You have got to be kidding me.” Emma says as she looks around.
Rumple laughs, “I'll be in touch when your portal is ready.” And vanishes a second later.
The pair look around at their home. Seeing the one bed Killian quickly offers, “You take the bed, I’ll sleep on the floor or somewhere it’s fine.”
Emma shakes her head, “no way, you take the bed. I have slept in my car and much worse places before. You take it.”
Hook just laughs, “you really are a stubborn lass. Look, it’s big enough for the both of us. It’ll be fine as long as we stay on our respective sides, no use arguing. We’re going to be here a while, no use one of us being uncomfortable.”
Emma reluctantly agrees.
The first night is the hardest, knowing she won’t see her family, Henry, for a whole year was a lot to wrap her head around. She had really enjoyed this trip when she wasn’t scared for her life, she had seen her parents fall in love and it made her finally understand what that meant, to be born of true love, the true love they had just witnessed.
And Hook. Or rather Killian, she should get used to saying his real name. She couldn’t quite admit to herself that she was falling for him before this trip. It would be a lot simpler if they were going back to Storybrooke, she probably would’ve given him a chance, a date perhaps, and see where it ends up. But this wasn’t Storybrooke. It wasn't even her time. She couldn’t risk whatever they had, not when they had to rely on each other to get home.
The next morning, Emma wakes to find they hadn’t exactly stuck to their respective sides. Killian’s arm was around her waist and she had tucked her head into his chest. It looked very cosy, and to an outsider it would seem they were truly a happy couple. But they weren’t.
Killian luckily wakes around the same time and, noticing the situation they’ve found themselves in, removes his arm and the two don’t say anything about the situation.
Except it keeps happening.
Every. Single. Night.
____
The next few days were spent discussing what their story would be. They had decided that Killian had been discharged from the Royal Navy because of the accident where lost his hand, and they were used to travelling but now had to find somewhere to settle down as a newly married couple.
They found jobs, Emma as the barmaid in the local tavern, similar to the one where she flirted with Other Hook. Killian found a job working by the docks so that he was still close to the water, it was mainly cleaning and anchoring the boats, very different to his pirate days. But it allowed them to slip into the background, not being noticed by anybody and not making any drastic changes to the future.
“How was your day, love?” Killian asks as Emma comes through the door after a long day working in the bar.
Untying her corset, trying to get out of the horrible clothes she tells him,“Horrible. I hate it here.”
Killian looks up at his ‘wife’, “that bad?”
Emma sits down on the chair. “I had 3 separate men try to buy me a drink whilst I was working. I told them I was working, and that I was married and they still tried to touch me up.”
Killian chuckles, “I’m guessing they aren’t going to do that again.”
Emma smiles, “of course not. I hope they won’t be needing their fingers for a while. How was your day?”
“It wasn’t bad. Can’t say I don’t love being by the water but it’s not the same. Although Cassian said he and his wife want to invite us over for dinner one night this week. Said that he wants to see the wife I don’t talk about enough.” He explains, he knows how Emma feels about getting too close with the other villagers, but if they avoid them for too long it could end up much worse.
“You mean you don't talk about your incredible and very hot wife, all day every day? Why did I marry you?” Emma teases. Their relationship has been like this ever since they got stuck, flirting and teasing but never going any further. “I know we can’t avoid other people forever, it’ll only cause more suspicion, so I guess we can meet them for dinner this time.”
“If this dinner goes well, I will start to talk about my incredible wife some more.” Killian teases back, “about how she’s messy and violent and she snores loudly when she sleeps.”
This earns a laugh from Emma, but also a pillow thrown at his head as she changes out of her corset. She’s never complaining about fitting into jeans again.
~~~
A week passes, more shifts at the tavern and more sleazy drunk men who probably have wives and children at their homes.
Emma earns 10 silvers and 15 bronze a week, Killain, 1 gold 9 silver and 12 bronze a week, which Killian told her is decent money, it allows them to feed themselves with food bought from the market, and buy more clothes which are not comfortable in the slightest. She hates the corsets. Luckily. She only has to wear them at work, the clothes she wears outside of work, whilst ugly and plain, are much more comfortable.
Emma wonders if she’s ever seen any of these villagers in Storybrooke, maybe they’re teachers or shop workers. Did they currently have a horrible life, and even though they’re cursed for 28 years, does it get better for them once they’re in Storybrooke?
The day finally arrived that the two of them have to go to dinner with one of the guys Killian works with. And Emma is petrified, it was fine just the two of them going about their days and telling their story to those around, separately. But telling their story together, they’d never done this. Would they know something was up? Would they know they were lying?
Killian can tell she’s tense, so he takes her hand in his and brushes his thumb over hers over and over. He knows her, he can tell when she’s stressed and knows that this calms her.
“It’s gonna be fine,” he whispers to her as they approach their friends home.
“Killian! So good to see you!” A blonde man opens the door, Cassian, Emma assumes. “Welcome, please come on in.”
Killain smiles and takes Emma’s hand in his as they walk through the door.
“May I introduce my beautiful wife, Emma.” Killian says gesturing to Emma who holds out her hand to shake, assured by Killian this was still the proper greeting in the Enchanted Forest.
“Emma. You are as beautiful as Killian has described. May I introduce my wife, Maeve.” Cassian smiles gesturing to a heavily pregnant woman beside him.
“It’s so kind of you to invite us into your lovely home.” Emma smiles, trying to keep her cool composure.
——
The night is pretty simple, they go over the story of how long they’ve been here, Killians time in the Navy, mostly true stories of his actual time, just a fabricated truth to fit the time and their fake timeline. The food was pretty good for the Enchanted Forest, some type of meat, pork or beef maybe, with rice, beans and vegetables. It was okay, but Emma was really missing grilled cheese.
Cassian and Maeve are really lovely people. They discover Maeve normally works at the market, but picks up extra shifts at the Tavern that Emma works at to make extra money, but is taking time off due to her pregnancy. Emma wouldn’t call it Maternity Leave as she was pretty sure it wasn’t a thing in the Enchanted Forest. Maeve said she was convinced it was a boy, but Cassian was sure it was a girl.
“Have you two thought about children yet?” Maeve asks.
Emma almost spits out her water. “Um great question. Um.” She decides to tell a fabricated truth, make it more believable. “I had a son, when I was younger, before I met Killian. I lost him, and I don’t know if I will ever see him again.” Truthfully, she didn’t want to make up a lie about her and Killian, they were not married, they were not together.
“It's a cruel fate to fall pregnant when young and unmarried. I’m sorry to hear that. I wish you the best for the future.” Cassian tells her. She smiles, thanking that they didn’t ask any more questions on the subject.
But there was one story, one question that really fucked Emma up. It was asked by Maeve when she wanted to know more about their marriage.
“So how did you decide you wanted to marry Emma, Killian? I can tell you two married for love, did you plan a romantic proposal or was it a spur of the moment type thing? Cassian proposed to me with his mother’s ring, he took me to the market stall where we first met. I was selling grain and he kept coming back every day for more grain. After weeks of coming to the stall he admitted the truth. A few months later, he took me back to the spot we first met and said he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. Of course I said yes!”
Emma looks over at Killian, hoping he has something to say. “You tell it so well Killian! He’s such a romantic my Killian!”
Killain looks at Emma and smiles. “So I lost my brother at sea years ago, and the only thing I have left of him is his ring. It’s kept me safe all these years, and when I met Emma I knew she was special. She didn’t like me very much at first, but I wore her down. She’s stubborn like my brother, so I knew I had to give her his ring. I took her down to the water, it’s not where we first met but it's where we both come when the world feels on top of us. Not much in my life has felt right since losing my brother, but Emma came into my life and she filled that void. So I took her to the water, got down on one knee and told her I couldn’t imagine my life without her. We don’t have much in terms of money, but we have each other and I think that’s enough.”
Was he serious right now? Emma thought he would maybe change up the story of how he wanted to marry Milah or something, but that was far too descriptive and emotional for it to be a lie or a fabrication. He had clearly thought about it, a little too much, Emma thinks.
Maeve was practically crying. “That is a beautiful story. You two are lucky to have found one another.”
She was going to murder him.
I’m sorry this is all that the Tumblr limit will let me post, check out part 2 here
Movie meme
I was tagged by @missbeckywrites. Thanks, Rebecca! This will be fun.
Favorite movie: I have too many favorites and can’t pick one, but Mad Max: Fury Road is one of my all-time god-tier favorites
Movie that makes you remember your childhood: Holes. One of the rare adaptations that are as good as the book
Favorite Tom Hanks movie: The Toy Story series kfajdfdsaafa
Movie that makes you cry: Warrior. “It's okay! It's okay! I love you! I love you, Tommy!” I’m going to SOB. I love this movie so much
Favorite 80s movie: I seriously can’t remember most of the ‘80s movies I’ve watched and liked so I’ll say The Breakfast Club though I’m not sure I’ll love it if I rewatch it
Favorite comedy: Booksmart and 22 Jump Street
Favorite sports movie: Since I picked Warrior already, The Damned United. If you love Michael Sheen, this movie is a must even if you’re not a sports person. You don’t need to be a sports person to like it tbh!
Favorite courtroom movie: 12 Angry Men. What a masterpiece
Favorite war movie: Damn, I love war stuff, but I actually haven’t watched many war movies. Uh...Schindler’s List had a strong impact on me when I was young, but I don’t know if I’ll feel the same about it now
Favorite animated movie: Spirited Away always
Favorite horror movie: I never wanted to watch any horror movies growing up, but over the past few years, I’ve grown hungry for horror content though I haven’t watched or read much. I think the only recent thing that I enjoyed immensely was Train to Busan, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t care for the zombie genre at all!
Favorite gangster movie: I love gangster movies, but I’ve seen very few of them to my extreme embarrassment. :( I’ll have to stop procrastinating. The Departed for now although I liked it less when I rewatched it recently
Most overrated movie: Joker, but that got mixed reviews so it’s technically not overrated. :/? You know what, I’ll go with Joker because even so, the fact that it got as much recognition (especially TP wth?! This film had TRASH direction) and enjoyed enormous box office success makes me SEETHE. If we’re going for movies that got a stellar reception, then Wonder Woman and some other movies I won’t mention because people will bite my head off adklfasdkf
Movie with the best soundtrack: Inception or Drive. I still think about those soundtracks even though it’s been 10 years (or 9 in Drive’s case) since I watched those movies. The soundtrack was one of the only good things about Drive lol. For more recent movies, BLACK PANTHER (the score is awesome too) AND BOOKSMART! NO COMPETITION.
Movie you can watch over and over: Most of the movies I mentioned above along with Iron Man and...I was going to say CA:TFA because it’s a comfort film I love even though it’s not great, but I don’t think I can watch it too often in a short amount of time. For a non-superhero film, Parasite
Most embarrassing movie you love: CA:TFA and...Remember the Titans? They’re not really embarrassing, but they’re cheesy and the second is very “sports defeats racism!” I still love them though
Favorite Christmas movie: A Charlie Brown Christmas! It’s so soothing and it reminds me of childhood.
Favorite sequel: Before Sunset. I thought Before Sunrise was just okay and was disappointed because everyone gushed about it, but Before Sunset not only was better than its predecessor but elevated it as well which is incredibly rare for a sequel. And Before Midnight? THE BEFORE TRILOGY IS SO, SO AMAZING.
Tagging @sportsgaytm, @footieridiculosity, @enjambament, @pohjanneito, @neon-snail, @mapsiodynes, @damnfinecupofcoffeeandpie, @oyechulo, @hoteloblivion, @tonyglowheart, @songofme, and anyone who wants to play.
All Good Things… The Value Of A Life.
#Blog #Bloggerstribe #AllGoodThings…
17th June 2020
Hello, Chaps and Chapettes,
Have you ever seen Twelve Angry Men? If you haven’t, I cannot recommend it enough. It is a story that has regenerated several times, from a television show written by Reginald Rose to the stage, and twice as a movie (a 1957 film starring Henry Fonda and a remake in 1997). This story is as poignant today as it was sixty-plus years ago, not just for the black lives matter movement but for many impacts on justice happening today and how we respond to them.
(Photo: https://sillyfunda.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/review-synopsis-12-angry-men-1957/)
The story revolves around twelve jurors who have just witnessed a court case about a 19-year-old who has been accused of the murder of his father. They must all unanimously decide whether he was guilty or innocent of the crime and if convicted they will be sending him to the chair. It’s taking place during the hottest day on record and most of the men want to get the case over with so that they can go enjoy the rest of their evenings. Yet, during the first vote, only one man holds his hand up to say that he believes they don’t have enough evidence to say the boy is guilty. Thus, they all have to stay and talk until they can all agree on the verdict.
Rather than talk to you about why I think it’s a great film to rewatch or play to perform today, I’ll share with you twelve lines that I believe can offer a different outlook on your world. This isn’t an essay or a lesson, just an idea of how you might see a point of view or understand the way another person might think or feel.
“If there is a reasonable doubt in your minds as to the guilt of the accused . . . then you must declare him not guilty.” Said by the Judge in the opening line.
‘Reasonable doubt’ becomes the theme and reason why the story exists. If the twelve jurors had gone into the room and not one had a doubt, then the story would have ended an hour and twenty sooner than it does. It is due to Juror 8, who first votes not guilty against the rest of his peers, that the debate continues and the group are forced to discuss the reasons the accused is or isn’t guilty. It’s like the quote from the first Harry Potter book; “it takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your peers, and a great deal more to stand up to your friends.”
Additionally, it is important to add that while none of the characters are named, all have their own personalities. There’s an older man with the experience of his years, a younger man who grew up in a similar neighborhood to the accused, an immigrant from another country, and a man who is estranged from his son. All of these characters show how different people view the guilt of someone they had never met.
“It's not so easy for me to raise my hand and send a boy off to die without talking about it first.” Juror 8 after the first vote. Juror 8 never suggests the boy is not guilty. He admits he was not a witness to the murder, so he could not give a definite answer. What he does advise is that he took all of the evidence and statements were given and that gave him cause to doubt the boy’s guilt. We never know if we are seeing the full story. The social media, politicians, even the news can still be biased, no matter what channel or reporter is delivering it. They may claim not to be, yet there will often be a nudge one way or the other. You have to check your own instincts and question them to make sure you are still on the right page.
(Photo: https://www.cohenfitch.com/areas-of-practice/wrongful-conviction/)
“You know why slum kids get that way? Because we knock 'em on the head once a day, every day. I think maybe we owe him a few words. That's all.” Juror 8 again. How many times have you heard somebody say they knew what race or age or gender a criminal would be when they hear about a crime? We always suppose that we already know everything about the villains in our lives based on where they came from and who raised them. It’s not to say they are not guilty of the crime but few people outside of courts ask what drove that person to commit such an act on a fellow human being. Would things change if we gave people a greater amount of our time?
“Too many questions were left unasked.” Juror 8, regarding the accused’s court-appointed defense council. Similar to the above quote, so many slams down fists on the tables and yell guilty the moment they read a headline. I know I’ve done it myself too. We take the first thing we hear and react to it. We don’t question because we trust that what we are being told are the truth and the full story. Is it?
“This gentleman chose to stand alone against us. That's his right. It takes a great deal of courage to stand alone even if you believe in something very strongly. He left the verdict up to us. He gambled for support, and I gave it to him. I want to hear more.” Juror 9, the older gentleman who admits voting not guilty in a second secret ballot vote. Most believe Juror 5, the youngest Juror, is the one who changed his mind in the second vote, and nobody expects it to be the older Juror. Yet, when they find out, they angrily challenge why. His answer shows what most feel but few, such as Juror 5, are too nervous to attempt. The pack mentality is a thing and when we see a group going one way, it is easy and safe to follow the pack. We are less accountable when we are more than one person, it is built into our instincts. This is why, every now and again, we should check whether our instincts are correct.
“Nobody knows him after seventy-five years. That's a very sad thing. A man like this needs to be recognized. To be questioned, and listened to, and quoted just once. This is very important.” Juror 9 again, after discussing why an elder witness may have given false testimony. The oldest jury member notices something in the oldest witness that the younger members do not because he shares age and experience with them. The ninth Juror tells his peers that he does not expect the oldest witness thought he was lying in court, but relished the attention they so rarely got and thus forgot or imagined some of the facts in order to remain relevant to the case. How often is experience valued? How often do we dismiss someone because they said something too slowly, or quietly, or without confidence?
(Photo: https://thecinephiliacs.wordpress.com/2014/10/02/12-angry-men-1997-review-remake/)
“Let me go. I'll kill him. I’ll kill him!” Juror 3, after being called a sadist for wanting the guilty verdict by Juror 8. Before this, Juror 3 and those still upholding the guilty verdict point out that the boy was heard by the older witness telling his father that he’d kill him. Juror 8 seemed to deliberately rile Juror 3 up, since he asks after this if Juror 3 really would try to kill him, causing him to give a blustering admission that he did not mean it. How many times do we say the cruelest things, not thinking what it might mean to somebody else? Equally, how often do we hear things and assume it is meant as gospel truth?
“Maybe it wouldn't hurt us to take a few tips from people who come running here! Maybe they learned something we don't know. We're not so perfect!” Juror 5, said to Juror 7 who called Juror 11 out on not being from the same country as the rest of the Jurors. Juror 11 is the immigrant, seemingly from a country they had to escape from due to war. Juror 5’s point, as the viewpoint of a younger generation still willing to listen and learn, is that it is easy to believe you know everything when you’ve lived in one place for long enough. When you’ve been the same skin color, the same gender, or in the same mentality your whole life, you cannot easily see it from the viewpoint of others. It’s not their fault but they must try to understand from the shoes of somebody else. If they do not try, then they can equally be to blame for the failure of society around them.
“Switch knives came with the neighborhood where I lived. Funny I didn't think of it before. I guess you try to forget those things.” Juror 5, when challenging how the knife could have been used. The knife could be seen as a McGuffin in the story as it is first shown how there could easily be a similar knife acquired by Juror 8, despite the prosecution claiming there could only have been one knife of the kind used in the murder. The second part is this, where it is pointed out that the way the deceased was stabbed from above the rib cage did not match how a switchblade would be used, in an underarm attack instead. Yet this line also shows the terrible things that can become so common an occurrence for many that it can be passed off as a formality. Should such things really be considered normal?
“What kind of a man are you? You have sat here and voted guilty with everyone else because there are some theater tickets burning a hole in your pocket. Now you have changed your vote for the same reason. I do not think you have the right to play like this with a man's life.” Juror 11, to Juror 7 after he changes his vote just to speed things along. Going back to the pack mentality, many can change their minds to suit their survival. When Juror 7 sees a way to resolve the situation faster, they change their vote to suit themselves, not the cause. Juror 11 explains that while Juror 7 might be doing the right thing, they’re doing it for the wrong reason. Another quote, from Alexander Hamilton, also heard in the fim Sucker Punch and cartoon Rugrats of all places, is “if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.”
(Photo: https://www.romper.com/p/13-reasons-rugrats-was-the-most-feminist-socially-conscious-cartoon-ever-1665)
Nearly there… “I've known a few who were pretty decent, but that's the exception. Most of them; it's like they have no feelings. They can do anything. What's going on here?” Juror 10, suggesting that race made the boy do what he is accused of. The story makes no point of telling us who the boy accused is, other than that they are 19 years old and that the victim was their father. However, Juror 10's comments suggest that the boy is not of the same race as the Jurors. Steadily through the story, Juror 10 makes many comments about the boy, referring to ‘their kind’ rather than the race, yet the reaction of the other Jurors when he finally does have a long rant about the boy’s origins is to shun Juror 10. Finally, they call him down and sit him in a corner away from them. This act alone shows that discrimination, even when not delivered face to face, is still as problematic. Reinforcing a dislike for color, creed, or religion of a person even when they’re not in the same room is still breeding antagonism and bad feelings that are carried into the times they are in the room with you. Is it really okay to say something bad about someone, just because they’re not there?
And, lastly, “It takes a great deal of courage to stand alone.” Juror 9 to Juror 3. It comes full circle. Where Juror 8 was the only one at the start to stand by not guilty, Juror 3 now tries to stand by a guilty vote alone. Yet, it is realized that Juror 3’s motives are based on the comparisons he makes to his relationship with his estranged son. When he is gently told that the accused is not the same boy as his son, he is the last Juror to accept a vote for not guilty.
In conclusion, I love this film. It may have overtaken Hitch, 21 Again, and Star Trek - Into Darkness as my top favorite films of all time. It has so many levels and interesting twists and points to make yet does so without making the audience feel silly or bamboozled. If you have the time, I fully recommend watching it. I know I will definitely be watching it again.
Stay safe, stay happy.
All good things, Love, Scaramouche. X
The Becoming
There’s a lot I want to do with this blog, and I’m still putting it together in my head. I do know that I want to use it as a space to share my thoughts on witchcraft and related subjects, some of it centered around research into particular topics, and some of it just what I’ve been thinking about.
Right now, I have a lot of stray thoughts that aren’t ready to be developed into posts of their own. As I sat down to type some of them out and see where they went, I ended up running pretty far with a piece about my personal journey into witchcraft. And that seems as good a place as any to start.
I suppose I’ve always been attracted to the strange and supernatural, but I didn’t think of myself a witch (or even consider it) until I was a teenager. This was during the teen witch craze of the 1990s, when the movie The Craft and the TV series Charmed reintroduced the idea of witchcraft as something appealing and empowering to young women. I don’t remember which of my friends first got the idea to dabble in witchcraft; maybe it was me, maybe not. I do remember that someone got hold of a copy of a Silver RavenWolf book, probably Teen Witch, and that we had to pass it around because the girl who actually owned it was afraid her parents would find it in her room.
Looking back, I have mixed feelings about those books. I feel lucky that I was the right age at the right time to have that option offered to me—that I was a teenage girl in the 90s listening to Tori Amos and Liz Phair and Ani DiFranco and Paula Cole and Alanis Morissette, and that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was on TV, and that pop culture in general was telling me I had power at the point in my life when I could’ve felt the most powerless.
Which Witch? A wordgame
At the same time, I wish there had been a greater variety of voices to hear about witchcraft from. Silver RavenWolf may have been a driving force behind a generation’s interest in witchcraft and Wicca, but her books were also full of bad information and skewed heavily towards one version of witchcraft. She doesn’t clearly distinguish between “witch” and “Wiccan”, and I think the passage in To Ride a Silver Broomstick about her associations with those two words explains why, but I also think it’s important to be clear that they aren’t wholly interchangeable. You can be a witch and not be a Wiccan; her books are about how to be a Wiccan. That’s what I tried to be as a teenager, and ultimately it’s why I drifted away from witchcraft in general over the next few years.
(Let me go ahead and say: Wicca is right for some people, and that’s fine. It’s not right for me.)
Some of my aversion to the Wiccan version of being a witch is instinctual and was pinged early on. when I was reading those Silver RavenWolf books. For me, being a witch was about female empowerment and independence, so I was confused when I got to the bit about worshiping a dual deity, the Goddess and the God. I never gelled with the Horned God on any level. It wasn’t to do with the similarity to the Christian devil; I wasn’t raised religious and I had no particularly strong feelings about anything in the Christian universe. I just didn’t feel at all compelled to adopt a central deity (or two) in general, and I really wasn’t interested in a male one.
Nor did I really care for the heterosexual duality of the Goddess/God, and all the binary sexual symbolism of things like the Great Rite and chalices and athames. At the time, I wasn’t consciously aware that I was queer (probably because it just wasn’t a possibility that I was exposed to very much). But I reacted to this whole Goddess/God thing turning up in my magical female empowerment pretty much the same way I reacted to a romance subplot suddenly taking center stage in a book I was enjoying. It wasn’t a dealbreaker, but I couldn’t help being annoyed that it was distracting from the stuff I was really there for.
Honestly, what probably played the biggest overt role in my move away from Wicca was simply that it was a religion. I’m just not cut out for religions. I find them interesting, and there are pieces of them that work for me sometimes, but on the whole it’s just not something that’s ever going to be a part of my life. Wicca is a very demanding religion. It’s highly ritualized, from the major holidays (the eight sabbats, plus the 12-13 esbats) down to the daily practices of spellwork. There is just a lot to do, and a lot of specificity about when and how to do it. I have enough trouble disciplining myself to do the other things I’m obligated to do in my life, like work and school and errands and keeping my house reasonably tidy and eating a vegetable on a regular basis. I was way worse at this at 14 or 15 years old. I got tired of rituals fast.
So TL;DR, I did not end up being a Wiccan. And because I’d gotten the idea that, in real life, witch = Wiccan, I didn’t think of myself as a witch anymore, either. If I have any lasting bitterness toward that segment of my path, that’s it. The identity of “witch” was an empowering, beautiful thing that I wish I’d been able to keep in my life even after my dalliance with Wicca was over. There were definitely times I could’ve used it.
In the years after that, I kept on being a little spooky and magical and all the things I’d been that had drawn me to witchcraft in the first place, just without a central identity to pin it all to. It’s interesting how things drift in and out of focus and concreteness depending on whether they have a name. The witch fad gave way to something else the way fads do, Buffy and Charmed eventually ended, and I didn’t think much about witches again until recently.
There’s a lot to delve into about why witchcraft has its resurgences when it has them; probably there are already a lot of essays on the subject. But generally, I think you tend to find women thinking witchy thoughts at times when they’re particularly under threat.
Much of my early/middle-early adult life coincided with the Obama administration. I’d only become really aware of politics toward the end of the Bush era. When 9/11 happened, I was in the middle of an unrelated nervous breakdown and just did not have the spoons to think critically about political issues; I was also 16 years old. I didn’t realize how fucked up things like the PATRIOT Act were until years down the line. I was in the dark in more ways than one, dealing with undiagnosed depression and anxiety and having to claw my way up out of its depths without even medication to give me a boost.
A Musical Interlude: What does this have to do with witchcraft...?
Two things kept me just this side of insane when I was in the depths: writing and listening to music. Of the latter, I still had the female artists who’d taught me how to be a woman, thank fucking god for them. And as I was trying to find a foothold in the long slow climb out of my depressive pit, I’d come across a Finnish band called HIM; for whatever reason, their particular brand of gothy romantic macabre intellectual music was exactly what my soul resonated with at that moment. I realized that I could vibe with men sometimes, provided they were the type of men who wrote poetry and wore eyeliner and a lot of black. This is probably how I ended up listening to Nine Inch Nails.
I was aware of NIN, as anyone who experienced the 90s was; even if that wasn’t your particular scene, you heard “Closer”. A lot of women around my age credit David Bowie in Labyrinth for their early confusing sexuality-related experience; mine was probably the “Closer” video. I think this explains a lot about me. But besides that, I hadn’t paid much attention to NIN until I ran into them again in 2007 or so, when they were doing this crazy metafictional thing called Year Zero around their latest album. I don’t remember exactly how I found it; maybe via Lost, which had its own thing like that and led me to the niche narrative medium of alternate reality games. Anyway, it was highly political, which was not what I remembered NIN being about, and as I was listening through the band’s back catalog and reading a bazillion interviews with brooding, sarcastic, witty, thoughtful Trent Reznor (look, I’m not completely gay), I got sucked into this thing.
I don’t remember whether I read this while I was diving into Year Zero or after, but in some interview or other I found out that Trent had just come out of his own darkness. He’d struggled with drugs and depression and nearly died, and when he finally got his shit together, he realized how much he’d been oblivious to, in his own life and in the world around him. Year Zero was political because he’d woken up, and it woke me up.
It’s interesting to me now to think that female music and male music acted like an alternating current in my life, one then the other driving me forward, yet I got absolutely zilch out of the hetero-duality of Wicca. I don’t know what to tell you. It’s also interesting that the avatars of that dynamic in my life were Tori Amos and Trent Reznor, since they had an important impact on each others’ lives too (that I didn’t know about till much later). There’s a bit in Tori’s book Piece By Piece where she talks about reconciling with the angry masculine energies she was drawn to at points in her life (I can’t remember if she specifically mentions Trent in that part, but I assume it’s at least somewhat about him), and her realization that she had a need to tap into energy like that sometimes. If anyone is the embodiment of feminine power to me it’s Tori, and reading her words about needing to channel masculine rage did and does resonate with me about the time in my life when male artists’ energies were what I needed to survive and evolve.
So anyway, back on the path: my dark times led me to Nine Inch Nails which, while the music was also helping me heal my soul, also focused my brain on the world I’d been ignoring. I became aware of, and pissed off about, politics in no time flat. I devoured Naomi Wolf’s The End of America: Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot. I watched C-SPAN of my own volition. In short, I realized that the system is fucked up. I realized that the things happening in America were literally insane, and I knew insanity. I learned the word “patriarchy”, but I’d known the thing it named for a long, long time. This was also the point when I realized I’d exhausted my lifetime stores of patience for bullshit and being fucked with; they have not, to this day, been replenished.
And then, like a lot of people, I thought the Obama years meant everything was okay forever. I mean, god, I sure felt like I deserved a break. There were ups and downs even then, but I really had no idea how fast and how far we could plummet down again until 2016.
Witch 2: The Rewitchening
I don’t believe you can be a woman and be aware of what’s going on in the world and not be angry. As I write this, my home state of Alabama has just passed an amendment (which may be useless; we do have the longest mess of a constitution in the world) aimed at undermining women’s right to an abortion. We have a president who says the most vile things about women on a regular basis, and a new Supreme Court Justice who is a rapist. There are a lot of rapists. There are a lot of men who beat up their wives and girlfriends and then go on to shoot up a school or a nightclub or a shopping mall, and we keep acting surprised, and we keep forcing women to share custody with their abusers and berating them for being abused. Women, everywhere, are under attack.
If there’s a single predominant reason I came back to witchcraft now, and why I think a lot of women are coming to witchcraft now, this is it. We are threatened, and that idea of female empowerment and strength and the potential to be feared by those who would harm us and to be fearless... it is as potent and attractive to us now as it was in the 90s, and the 60s, and probably so many times before.
I am a witch. I don’t belong to a religion, and I don’t feel obligated to be a witch according to anyone’s definition but my own. My witchery is a product of the path I’ve taken to this point, and is highly focused around female empowerment; that said, I recognize that other people’s witchery has a different shape, and different (or no) gender, and is religious or isn’t, and I acknowledge and respect that, too. I have zero interest in telling anyone else how to be a witch, or whether they can be.
I started this blog because I need to express myself, but also because I want to contribute to a diversity of voices about witchcraft that wasn’t available to me as a teenager. I want to put things out there in case someone else needs them. Honestly, I’m writing and gathering all the things that will eventually be here for a hypothetical, imaginary-but-maybe-real young witch who is maybe just a ghost of my teenage past, to tell her the things I wish I could’ve heard, and just to remind her that no one can tell you how to be a witch, and no one should try, and that there are so many different ideas and beliefs and voices and experiences out there for her to learn from, including the ones inside herself.
That’s my origin story.
2017/10/01 - Adam Watches Movies’ Top 20
Before we dig in, I wanted to clarify a couple of things. This is my “Favorite Movies” list, not necessarily the ones I think are the best, but the ones I enjoy or cherish the most. There are so many to choose from that I expect this list to change significantly between now and the next time. My only rule was that I needed to have seen the film more than once. If there’s a title that you expect to see here, it’s likely because I’ve only viewed it that one time… or maybe I still haven’t watched it!
20. Seven Samurai (1954)
A recent addition to this list, I watched The Seven Samurai in order to get prepared for the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven. I was blown away and wound up seeing it twice in a row. It may seem impulsive to include it, but it really made an impact on me.
19. 12 Angry Men (1957)
A lot of the pictures on this list could be categorized in the sci-fi, fantasy, or musical category. You will notice that a number of them also share a certain trait with 12 Angry Men in that they’re boiled down to their essence. There’s no fat to trim in this film. You don’t even find out a whole lot about the case the jurors are debating because you don’t need to. It’s all about that immediacy of what’s going on right there and then.
18. Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
I vividly remember the first time I saw Singin’ in the Rain. A friend of mine invited me to see it with her in the theatre. I haven’t stopped thinking about Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds since. Like my #16 pick, it’s pure jubilation on-screen.
17. Beauty and the Beast (1946)
Similarly to the next film on my list, this version of the fairytale perfectly brings child-like wonder to life. I love the sets, the costumes, the black-and-white cinematography, the fact that it isn’t ashamed of being what it is. It never smirks or winks at the camera. Beauty and the Beast doesn’t need to; it enchants you from the very first frame. There are many other versions of this tale out there, but don’t overlook this one.
16. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
I literally just re-watched this musical last night. I’ve seen it many times and it never loses its charm. Everyone reading has probably seen this film, but have you REALLY seen it? I’m not talking about bits and pieces on TV with commercial breaks or fleeting glimpses between laundry being folded. To me, The Wizard of Oz isn’t just a movie, it’s a feeling that’s been captured and immortalized on film.
15. RoboCop (1987)
Dark, violent, funny and deceptively smart, this is much more than a story about a cyborg shooting criminals. The sequels weren’t kind to RoboCop and while the remake was ok, it isn’t on the same level as the original. It’s got great villains, many quotable lines, an iconic look and feel… so many of its scenes are permanently imprinted on my brain that this was an easy pick.
14. The Terminator (1984)
I remember the first time I watched The Terminator. I snuck downstairs while everyone else was asleep so that no one would know that I was viewing an R-Rated movie. That was the beginning. Over the years, I’ve flip-flopped between this first chapter in the series and its sequel. In fact, Terminator 2 was “my favorite movie” for a long time. Today, I’m giving my love to the one who started it all.
13. King Kong (1933)
One of my favorite things about this film is that it’s bigger than anyone working on it could’ve imagined. There’s a reason why we’re still talking about this movie today. I love the visuals, the storyline, and that ending; it’s unforgettable.
12. Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (1965)
This could’ve been any number of Godzilla films. I could’ve put anything from the 1954 original to last year’s Shin Godzilla in this spot, but Monster Zero is the one I’m most nostalgic for, the giant monster film I used to watch the most as a kid. There are so many lines from this one that I know by heart and wish I could quote… but how often do you get to slip “The Monster is Zero” in a conversation?
11. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
The most recent film on this list and one of the greatest action films ever made. It’s also beautiful and features surprisingly well-developed characters. This movie goes for it, all the way. There’re no superficial aspects. It’s just blazing action all the way through. I saw it what… Five times in the theatre? and it just keeps getting better.
10. The Iron Giant (1999)
Another childhood favorite of mine, I had the pleasure of watching the Signature Edition on the big screen with some friends when it was re-released in 2015 and it reignited something in me. I’m also fairly certain that I saw this one in its original theatrical run in 1999. It’s got so much heart and so many laughs. I fall in love with every detail of this Brad Bird film every time I watch it.
9. Batman (1989)
Tim Burton’s Batman is not a faithful adaptation of the comic book character. The Joker’s origin is different, Batman’s methods of fighting crime are not consistent with what’s been printed on the page for decades now, the characters’ dynamics have been vastly altered… but there’s something about it that captures the spirit of the character nonetheless. It all builds towards that final, epic shot with Danny Elfman’s music in the background that tells you what this character is all about. You watch this movie and it brings you back to when it was first released. You understand why it was such a big deal. You don’t get that feeling from any run-of-the-mill movie.
8. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
My #2 movie is another horror film, and I love it for its historical value. It’s higher on my list, but it doesn’t frighten me like this low-budget chiller does. When I pop The Blair Witch Project into my player, I’m immediately filled with a sentiment of dread. I don’t want to put my back to the window, I don’t want to go to bed afterward. It’s a film like none other because it doesn’t even feel like a film, it’s real footage of something horrible that happened. It doesn’t matter that I know that isn’t the case, that I know how it ends. The impact never diminishes.
7. Ben-Hur (1959)
1957’s 3:10 to Yuma was in this spot until the last second when I remembered Ben-Hur. How could I forget the betrayal, the galleys, the chariot race, the delicate balance of themes, the tale of vengeance? This list was hard to make and I’m sorry 3:10. You’re great, I love you very much but when a film lasts 212 minutes and never feels long, it absolutely must be placed on the list.
6. X2: X-Men United (2003)
This is how you do a sequel right. I could’ve put several of the X-Men films on this list, but this is the one I’ve seen the most times. I love the way it builds upon what we’ve seen before and raises the stakes.
5. Star Wars (1977)
Surprisingly, I don’t really have nostalgia for Star Wars. I saw the originals as a kid a couple of times and of course saw the prequels when they were released, but my love for it comes from an adult viewpoint. The way this first chapter takes familiar story elements and makes them feel fresh again, the characters, the iconic moments, the things it brought to cinema as a whole is what made me go back to it over and over. Over the years, It’s brought me back to that time that didn’t actually happen but feels like it does, that moment where I first saw the colorful aliens and laser battles and was blown away.
4. Fantasia (1940)
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen Fantasia. As a kid, I loved the Rite of Spring segment. As an adult, it’s the combination of music and visuals that gets me. This would be a great first movie to show to your children. I think it would spark their imagination in the way few films would.
3. The Little Mermaid (1989)
My favorite Disney animated film, at least today. This could’ve easily been Snow White and the Seven Dwarves or Beauty and the Beast on a different day. I remember the moment I truly fell in love with this one. It was in high school and suddenly, something clicked. As soon as I got home, I scoured the shelves for our VHS copy and watched it. My family couldn’t understand why I suddenly needed to view this animated musical, but I sat there and drank it all in. The colors, the details, the character designs, the songs, they all work so well together. Ariel and I both have a passion for collecting and a ferocious curiosity. Maybe that has something to do with why I relate to her so much.
2. Halloween (1978)
When I think I get tired of this film, I find something new to like about it. Like in 12 Angry Men, I love the simplicity of the story. You’re home, alone. There’s a man with a mask and a knife. He’s trying to get you. That’s all you need for a horror story. Even the killer isn’t fancy, it’s just a white face, but if you saw that mask starring at you through the window late at night, you’d wet yourself.
1. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
I’ve mentioned my love for the Universal Monsters before. I could’ve put some of the other films on this list; Dracula and its Spanish Counterpart, The Invisible Man or The Creature from the Black Lagoon but I don’t like any of them as much as I do Frankenstein. Since this one squeaks past it by just a hair, it’s only fitting that it takes the #1 spot. Will it stay there the next time I make this list? I can’t say for sure, but I’m excited to find out.
I watched it now and I don't it. Remember in your last review you said u dislike how spn always does the same with the ambiguity; but /this/ is the thing I dislike having s/t major happen like Crowley saving Cas and it not changing/having no longlasting impact on any or their dynamic as seen with Sam/Dean/Crowley. With Crowley but also with Cas who has had one of his biggest moments in his story, is just tossed aside doing his day job and giving off screen plot updates.
Look, on good days I tell myself it just about works, right, because both Sam and Dean basically have the emotional range of a teaspoon and they don’t want to talk to each other for various reasons and also we’ve got this weird show, yeah, where sometimes weeks and weeks pass between two episodes, so while we’re still sitting here crying and giffing things, for them - they haven’t moved on, exactly, but they’ve been on three other hunts and they’ve killed stuff and they’ve been slammed into walls and stabbed and cursed, so, who even knows.
So, yes, if you squint, it sort of makes sense.
But also: it really doesn’t. Those are narrative choices, aren’t they? Because I’m still convinced Dean did say something about his mom to that social worker, Beth, and they didn’t show us that. And it’s possible Sam had some awkward exchange with a librarian or a waitress or, hell, someone at Asa’s funeral - they never showed us that either. And what about nurses and doctors? I don’t know how believable it is that they never need a professional to patch them up, and moments like those - you’re in shock, perhaps, and your adrenaline is still up and your heart is beating boom boom BOOM - I’m not saying they’d tell people about monsters, but we know they do confide in other people sometimes. Look at Dean and that priest, or Dean and werewolf widow Michelle - I’m sure there were a lot of other cases. They’re only human, after all. And, well, the same goes for everything else: those dead people they carry on their backs like heavy chains and never talk about, new monsters and new freakishness that’s never mentioned again, heavy trauma seemingly unremembered, and, yes, momentous events that apparently change nothing, like Cas being afraid to leave the Bunker and Crowley’s suddenly selflessness.
Ultimately, I think it all comes down to the usual doublespeak. They’ve got a show about monsters and gore, so that’s what they keep filming. When I first joined the fandom, I asked around about this, and someone told me it was a CW problem - that all their shows are aimed at women - think Jane the Virgin, The Vampire Diaries and Supergirl - and with this one muscle cars and blazing guns extravaganza, they wanted a piece of the male demographics, so by God, they’re fighting to keep it. I really don’t know enough about any of it to have an opinion, but it’s certainly true that Supernatural is only one step removed from those old Clint Eastwood movies: cowboy stuff with a few tears thrown in. And since they know - and we know - that Sam and Dean are not like that, they’re probably afraid that any conversation about anything will stray into chick-flick territory -
(which, ironic)
- and that will be it, goodbye male viewers and goodbye Republicans and goodbye anyone who likes to pretend men don’t have feelings and never talk about anything because being worried and guilty and anxious and overwhelmed - my God, so gay - pull yourself together and walk it off.
So I understand where you’re coming from - I feel the same way. But this show is mostly subtextual, and that’s it - love it or leave it. We spend a lot of time on those clues about Dean’s bisexuality and his love for Cas, but we could spend even more time in mapping out what goes down in all those moments we don’t see. Because we know they keep in contact with people, for instance, we know they worry (look at Dean casually mentioning to Jody he’d been wondering about how the girls were). We know they probably don’t eat fast food day in day out, if only because they look the way they do and they’re not getting any younger, so someone - probably Dean - buys groceries and cooks. We’ve seen Dean ironing clothes (and that was, like, the first time in 12 season?) but we know that must be a common occurence, as is buying those clothes, which are costumes, really, so there must be some debate between them into what pyschologists wear or whatever. We know they have many painful anniversaries, and how do they spend them? We know Sam must be going through something major right now - that God he prayed to his whole life? a fraud - the archangel who whispered to him every night for years? still around, and I’ll never believe Sam can’t feel his presence somehow - the people who burned him with a blowtorch? working with his mother - but it’s been weeks and weeks and Sam is just peachy. And we know a lot about Dean too - in fact, we know so much I won’t bore you with it.
[More on Crowley and Family Feud below the cut.]
Now, the problem is - some of it may be marketing, and other things are down to narrative choices (for instance, we’ve seen what Sam becomes when Lucifer climbs inside his mind: do we really need to see that again?*), but it’s still bizarre to watch a show like this one, which is 90% subtext and silences. Because they talk and talk about ‘going where the story leads them’ or whatever - they don’t. They insist in going in circles, because that’s the format of the show: drive somewhere, talk to people, drink bad beer, gank vampire, drive off. But stories change, and characters grow. I remember people bitching because there was no Quidditch in HP7 - and, I mean, are you for real? The Dark Lord’s taken over - there’s what amount to a military dictatorship over half of Britain - Muggleborns are being rounded up, their wands snapped in half - and you think that, what, Harry can stay at Hogwarts and play Quidditch? So here, what you’ve got is a format which used to work well with two angry young men who saw no need to talk to each other, but now - now they’re grown-ups, for fuck’s sake. And their lives actually depend on adapting their strategy around new enemies, which brings me back to Crowley.
What Buckleming did to Crowley last week is a flashing billboard of why you can’t stick to your format no matter what. Because at this point I’m pretty sure they’re planning to have Crowley betray them in some major way, again, and the problem is that good writing leads you into complicated situations you should really adjust to? Like - I may be completely off the mark, but - in Stuck in the Middle (With Me) they needed Crowley, so they wrote him in. And then it made sense that he was the only one to know about the Lance (I still think Cas is bizarelly oblivious about a lot of things concerning Heaven, but whatever), and therefore he was the only one who knew to break it. Great, done, beautiful scene, huge bit of character development. And next those two idiots have to steer the story in the ‘right’ direction again - ie, the general arc that’s been decided for the season - which means Crowley must be given a reason to be bad again or something, so they go and write that - a confusing, OOC episode full of plot holes whose only point is to give Crowley a reason to hate the Winchesters. And I’m not saying you can’t write him that way, but the problem is - that episode made me hate the Winchesters as well, because, come on - all those times they’ve gone back and forward in time and come back to life and somehow that’s not a problem, but suddenly poor wee Gavin does it and you absolutely need to kill him? And what if that had been Sam, uh? Would Dean have sent Sam back to a doomed ship without so much as a shrug? Nope, because when it’s about them, they find another way. And the fact they didn’t allow Crowley so much as a goodbye - the fact they trust Rowena over Crowley - people who spend a solid twenty minutes every episode harping on and on about family - that’s -
(That’s exactly what happened with Charlie, by the way: they needed a reason to have Dean snap, and took a shortcut. An extremely unbelievable, OOC and badly written shortcut.)
Anyway.
I don’t know what to tell you. I think my Dean, the Dean I write about, would never have been so cavalier about destroying an innocent person and someone Crowley cared about so much (the one line I liked about that episode: “In your own lizard way, I know you cared for him.”). In fact, the Dean I know would have acknowledged the huge debt he now has with Crowley - would have bought him a beer, at the very least.
(Then again, the Sam I know was affected by Lucifer’s presence - my Sam would have had some kind of faith crisis over last year’s events, and he wouldn’t have been so whatever about being locked away not once, but twice already, and he would probably have debilitating nightmares and still, despite everything, he would be sympathetic to the BMoL’s proposals because that’s who he is, or who he thinks he is: a Means and Ends kind of guy.
Shows what I know.)
I think we need to accept this show has a format, and that format doesn’t leave a lot of room for plot coherence and character development, which means a lot of the actualy story will stay in the subtext and sometimes we’ll be left to explain away illogical points and general weirdness. Luckily, most of the writers seem to know what they’re doing and they’re able to fit a lot even into a MoTW episode, but other things are just wrong, and that’s why we have fanfiction.
*Just to be clear: I would love to hear more about Sam and Lucifer, and I’m convinced it could be written in a new way, and I know they’ve got the right people to work on that - my God, just look at what Berens and Dabb were able to do with a couple of werewolves - look at what Yockey’s doing with nothing at all.
[Sorry for the rant. I mostly like this show - a lot - but as I’ve said before, its inconsistency is occasionally very hard to bear. Every other show I watch, I know exactly what I can expect - in terms of quality, that is - and here - here I’m thinking they could have something that’s critically acclaimed, as well as fiercely loved, and instead they throw it away - and for what?]
What Language Really does South Korea Speak?
Second, when you become a member of the site, you may scan their particular online catalog. Ok If a guy may accept that great, but down the road comes her parents and siblings, they to have to be looked after. Learn in the event they have rich Coke or 7-Up for their home.
Secret And Delightful
Koreans will not always have the opportunity to experience earliest love, or mutual sympathy during teenage years, as is traditional in our country. Because of having life ideas and probe in place of their pre-teen years most girls inside the Philippines are taught to please their very own parents, by no means consider actions that may shame the family, remain moral and upstanding so everybody in the spot knows they are “good girls”, fear the wrath with their angry fathers, dress appropriately so as to not appear to be a “loose girlfriend, ” and possess an overall “straight-laced” life until they find a better candidate for any husband.
When the Simple reformation emerged people’s thoughts were changing. Protestants presumed weddings needs to be orchestrated by a justice with the peace and this couples who were not fitted to each other are able to divorce freely. Unfortunately the legality of these philosophy were only valid for a short period of time before the Catholics once again renewed an older legal system. However the Protestants had been victorious in adding wedding vows to marriage ceremonies, a series of oaths and promises to treat each other with dignity and admiration, something that until then wasn’t really thought to be of particular importance. The vows lacked any legal authority but they were one step in the right direction.
Bridesagency featuring information with photos of sole Korean postal mail order wedding brides sincerely considering meeting a foreign husband. Each of our photo photo gallery of beautiful Korean language brides modified weekly, 75 and more new brides to be from far eastern europe countries are included in our bridesagency web-site every week.
At this point regarding the somebody; it is not scientific opr historical. Costly attempt and justify a way of life that never really came about and Cina – which has an old and long registered civilization would not have to transform the rim. In this book, there are so truths, but is normally is plainly a spiritual view of the world that the Roman Empire were required to endorse to save lots of itself. You will find no mention of Europe in the Old Testament; only allusions that people afterward ascribe to Europe. Syria is brought up, Persia is usually mentioned; Ethiopia is brought up; Egypt is mentioned, Egypt, but zero mention of Greece – and naturally Israel is usually mentioned – when then it was do not ever a country. Consequently , it is merely an attempt to provide some credence to a life-style, and concentrates specifically in the peoples around the epicentre in the events that supposedly happened in that area.
You may ask why would probably Korean brides to be want currently men right from abroad? Oriental culture in too stern but it shouldn’t turn local brides in snow queens”. Korean young girls find it as well difficult to find appropriate partners inside their home country. Community brides are smart, hard-working, regimented, family-oriented, and living but they are unlucky in love. Regional men are definitely not keen on the idea to get married to and develop families. This kind of us what forces community girls to locate intended for partners abroad. Girls right here conservative thoughts about relationship and marriage. That they dream of a cheerful family and kids their minds full of like and they imagine sharing this with males who admire the same.
By the way, when you advised your fiance you don’t want him to send cash, you would a good thing to get building his trust in you. He then does a good thing by telling you is actually not wrong for a future husband to receive cash from her soon being lifelong spouse. This seems like a good relationship beginning with trustworthiness and trust between the two of you.
Since you are interested in a Korean language mail buy bride, it could be reasonable to consider that you will most probably find involvement in Asian culture as well. Communications in your way on the path to your potential Korean star of the event will be method easier whenever both of you know and speak the local language.
Korean females strive for international husbands because of the classic impact on that are prevalent in Parts of asia. By default, the male figure commands respect and reverence even though the females are expected to grow in quiet and almost out of the limelight.
We have 3 categories of older gals, middle from ages ladies, and young ladies. In person, I prefer an individual at least 20 years the younger. Why? Since they have energy, enthusiasm, a positive outlook toward their potential new existence, and just plain youthfulness. I actually didn’t formerly start out searching for a really youthful wife nonetheless it ended up doing this. I collection the search engine in FilipinaHeart to look for a candidate candidates that had been 35 to 45 like we are taught to choose in the U. T. – 10 to 20 years younger than myself. However the next time I went on this website, the search engine totally reset itself for the purpose of 18 to 45. I’ve no idea so why the lower number reset nevertheless the higher a single didn’t. Immediately there were so many of new possibilities and the absolutely adore of living was in generally there. So I will have a Filipina wife that is 32 years younger than myself.
This woman is automatically developed from arrival to work at a paid out job always but be mindful about that. She could go find the lowest paid job in the area and think she’s succeeding because it appears to be much higher than she would generate in the Korea but you know it’s certainly not and that living expenses are much higher in this article. I’ve also found that a sugary and kind Filipina will more often than not start to pick up feminist, bitchy, attitudes right from female co workers and her personality will change because this woman is around them a whole lot. Filipino people are born copiers and cloners so she is going to absorb many methods from others. Did you know enjoy the result of her working with a bunch of crabby gossiping ladies.
Do Korean language Women Have got Family Ties?
Over the last few decades, men’s affinity for Korean girls has significantly increased. As you can see love is definitely a recent idea when it comes to marital life and when that concerns the law the idea doesn’t seriously know what best for the people. Marriage has long been used to discriminate, prosecute, and harass. Easy methods to a tool for bigotry and ignorance. It is been seen in religious and nonreligious adjustments. Laws and politics have always said a lot about marital life but sometimes individuals have an overabundance to say. Make sure you continue reading since my subsequent article represents different types of marriage by arranged marriages, child brides, polygamy, and even the odd circumstance of polyandy, when one particular woman usually takes several partners. Or perhaps you’d like to learn about distinctive forms of family instead.
In the event they’re seriously interested in a romance with YOU rather than just wanting to conquer here to the promised area of dairy and honies, then they’d be willing and want to speak to you designed for an extended period of time to discover you well. Being rapide about you approaching over isn’t a characteristic of the Filipina you need to marry, in my view. It’s not your matter if others are talking her up without wishing to commit. They have something they should endure if perhaps they’re going to be online for that husband. A Filipina who’s cautious and takes time to discover you is normally worried about your ability to possess deep thoughts for her, worried about you possibly coldly treating her as an inanimate residence cleaner and baby developer, you as being a hot head who sounds wives, you being an alcohol or drug addict, etc . She really wants to “probe” you with dialogue to satisfy her curiosity about somebody she’s planning upon spending other parts of her life with and would not mind many months of communicating.
It’s healthy for you to be cautious but never be THEREFORE cautious that you just miss your perfect diamond necklace. I entered this while using attitude that out of a country of 89 , 000, 000 people which more than 50% are woman, I would get the perfect pal that I was meant to meet up with. If that took 12 months, I’d hold out it out. If this didn’t, I’d personally be happy that we didn’t need to wait it. I found my wife’s account the very first evening I seemed on FilipinaHeart, she was in my favorites in the future for the next 3 days, and she was the first We wrote to. Maybe I lucked out, maybe this lady was suitable for me ahead of I even got at this time there. I believe we were meant to get together and get married to. But which just me personally.
You have a very high chance to meet many sole and single women on-line. You will be excited by how sugary, and kind regional women happen to be. They will demonstrate respect; they are interested in conntacting you and causing you to fall in love with all of them. Asian-Western marriage is considered the strongest. The divorce fee is twenty percent compared to marital relationship between people today belonging to the same competition. It’s not really a huge surprise that so many guys prefer to date and marry Oriental girls.
sixty two Interesting Korean War Particulars. The Korean language War begun at some: 30 a. m. about June 25, 1950, and ended about July twenty seven, 1953. Compared to WW II, there are few movies regarding the Korean language War. There initially were 6. eight , 000, 000 American individuals who served during the Korean language War period, by June 27, 1950, to January thirty-one, 1955.
But the term is certainly widely used which includes application of it is negative associations; the primary an individual being the concept of buying a female from a catalog. Further more, there are ramifications, derived from its initial application to Asian women, that define the form of women readily available from a catalog.
Jamjuree From Daejeon, Korea, Southerly Seeking For Guy
A mail-order bride is actually a woman who data herself in catalogs which is selected by a man with regards to marriage. Don’t think because the father is a water pipe fitter that he’s making a lot of money. It’s nothing like Journeyman Tube Fitter income in this region. He’s continue to probably lucky to make $5, 000US per year even if your dog is doing perfectly by their lesser standards. It’s not uncommon for that doctor for making $12, 000 a year until they have the possibility to come to the U. S. and make 15X as much per year.
The website is home to sexy and hot Korean language women meant for marriage. Signup for free and browse through user profiles that participate in the lovliest girls in Korea. Seek out young or perhaps mature ladies. View their photos and save your preferred Korean birdes-to-be. Find about single Korean females who want to time frame and get married to Westerners. Read their very own informative single profiles and viewpoint their personal photos. AsianBeautyOnline has a exciting interface and simple navigation in order to men to take pleasure from their period spent on the website.
I have to differ though. Whilst I’m sure there are plenty who do that very effectively, and I spoken to a few young girls while discovering my wife that I’m sure might, not all are searching for a scam sufferer to fund their families in high class, and give money with their illicit sweethearts. My blog page is actually about being careful to not receive stung, i really warn https://buyabrideonline.com/korean-women men to be careful.
I actually also feel that asking you if you are coming over may be a test at the girl’s portion to see if you are already thinking about coming over to select from a number of applicants instead of just browsing her only, or if it is just to have got a sex spree across her nation, etc . because she realizes you don’t have spent sufficient time to be interested in her however. She possibly doesn’t get a handle on how much a trip over presently there costs you or she actually is baiting you to see what their answer will probably be.
Angry jelous women after that, jajaja. Let me revise the silver digger portion, this article is old. The answer you gave it “like all of the countries you will find women aiming to be maintained”, that is what I highlighted. The article is “How to Date Colombian Women” as well as the relationship I realize between foreigners and colombian women is the fact one just. I i am talking to that crowd, the web dating picture. And I include tasted equally ways of Colombian women, the gold digger and the right ones. And met a whole lot of golden diggers, that may be what I find out. But I will revise and atone this article. Is avoid the object of denigrating.
Another advantage you will like when you understand Korean vocabulary is that you will see that incredibly simple to make a good first impression while using parents of the potential Korean language bride. Communicating with her father and mother in the local words is highly vital, especially during a family union dinner. By impressing her family, you will discover it easier to marry a Korean woman.
Colombian young girls can be hard to know. Sometimes they manage to dress to incite and they are very sexual in their actions. Compared to other cultures, physical contact is very normal and they may well stay near to you. But will not interpret this as in invitation to crib them, try it out and you will ruin everything.
The Xiongnu or Hephthalite are not Israelites. Xion and Zion are just punctuational conincidence. Among the chapters in my publication talks about “The Tower of Babel” that can answer your question exactly who the Xiongnu were. Xiongnu were bloodstream thirsty and wicked barbarians that caused a lot of troubles to China. These were finally conquered by the Chinese army in the Han Dynasty and got sent from the East fleeing to the West. At this time there, they started to be the well known Huns where a mighty soldier, Attila, came about and dominated them. They turned out to be a great enemy of your Romans.
blah blah blah, all this speak about Filipino women of all ages. These men whom said undesirable things about us I’m sure are good men (eyes rolling). The majority of these men who are going on about how crazy Filipino females are anticipate a obedient, compliant, acquiescent, subservient, docile, meek, dutiful, tractable wife that might give them the every whim and if a girl can’t squeeze into that field, they are disappointed. Expect to receive 100% if you’ve given your 100%. In any other case, it’s called karma. You get the things you give. There are good and rotten kinds and stop categorizing us like we are a fruit group.
Healthy ways to deal with mental illness:
What is mental illness? Mental illnesses are conditions of health involving (or a combination of) changes in emotion, thinking, or behavior. In social, work or family activities, mental illnesses are associated with distress and/or problems. Nearly one in five (19%) adults in the U.S. experience some form of mental illness, one in 24 (4.1%) has a serious mental illness * one in 12 (8.5%) has a diagnosed substance use disorder. “There’s only us. There’s only this. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road. No other way, no day but today.” — “No Day but Today,” Rent (submitted by Colleen McDaniel). It takes time and patience to find the right coping mechanism, but it can have a huge impact on how you feel. If you haven't had success with the strategies you've used, or you're looking to add a few more to your toolkit, here are seven coping mechanisms that are worth trying out suggested by mental health professionals. They are Radical Acceptance, Deep Breathing, Opposite to emotion thinking, the five senses, Mental Reframing, and Emotion awareness.
Radical Acceptance- According to Marsha Linehan (creator of dialectal behavior therapy), progressive tolerance means "fully and absolutely embracing something from the core of your soul, with your heart and mind." The idea that no matter what, you can't change a situation is included in this definition. Imagine, for instance, that a tornado is coming. Obviously, to stop the tornado you can't do anything; it's not possible. But if you agree that it's coming, you can respond, plan and stay safe. If you're lying there hoping to get the storm to stop or pretend there's no tornado, when it arrives, you'll be in real trouble. The same applies to the illness of the mind. They can't change the fact you're having a mental disorder, so any time you're wasting trying to "get rid of it" or pretending it doesn't exist just drains precious energy from them. Grant. Accept. Consider the state you are in. Then take the steps you need to take care of yourself.
Deep Breathing-At this level, relaxing is an irritating cliché, but that's because breathing deeply is really the best way to relax fear. I switched to the idea of "5 3 7" breathing while combating my own anxiety: breathe in for 5 seconds Keep the air for 3 seconds Breathe out for 7 seconds This subtle repetition sends a message to the brain that all is well (or soon). Your heart will slow its pace soon, and you'll start relaxing — sometimes without even realizing it. Opposite to emotion thinking-That's how it sounds: the instincts command you to behave in the opposite way. Say you're angry and you need to separate yourself. Reverse-to-emotion urges you to go out and be with men, isolation's reverse behavior. Fight that with something calming like meditation when you feel anxious. Switch to something that stabilizes you while you feel manic. Perhaps this strategy is one of the toughest to put into play, but the outcomes are amazing if you can do it.
The use of a technique called "the five senses" is another effective method of using the physical space to help you perceive the crisis. Instead of concentrating on a particular object, "the 5 senses" shows you what each of the senses feels in that moment. As an example, think of a PTSD flashback in the classroom. Save it! Stop it! Look around you. Look around you. See the clock's hand movement. Feel under you the chair. Listen to the voice of your professor. Smell the chalkboard's faint scent. Chew a rubber slice. It takes only a few seconds to pass through your senses and helps you keep up with what is real, what is happening right now. Mental reframing involves taking and thinking differently about an emotion or stressor. Take traffic, for instance, to get stuck. Yeah, you might say, "Oh, my life is terrible. It's awful. Due to this rain, I'll be late. Why is this happening to me always? “Or you can reframe the thought that might seem like it," The traffic is bad, but I'm still going to get where I go. I can do nothing, so I'm just going to listen to music or an audiobook to spend time. "Perfecting this technology literally can change your point of view in difficult situations. But this ability takes time and practice, as you might imagine.
Emotion Awareness- If you live in denial, it will take much longer to care for your emotions, because once we realize what we feel, we can deal with it or what it causes. So, if you're afraid, take a few minutes to meditate, let's you be anxious. If you're angry, just get angry— then listen to some soothing music. Taking your feelings into account. Allow yourself to feel like you are, and then take action to reduce unhealthy feelings. You can't control your psychological condition, but you can monitor how you react to your symptoms. This isn't easy or easy (like everything else with mental illness), but it can make you feel better emotionally, spiritually and physically by learning, practicing and perfecting treatments. I have tried all of the above approaches and changed the way I deal with the challenges of mental health. To heal from mental disease, it takes strength and determination–in the expectation of feeling better, to try to battle symptoms. You are incredibly strong to survive them, even if you feel weak or helpless about your daily battles. Simple and practical methods can help you fight. Consider these techniques, and the way you feel and live your life will change clearly.
9 Questions Someone with Mental Illness Wishes You Would Ask: Can you help me understand what it’s like living with your condition? Is there anything you need from me or something I can do to help you? Can we do something together – get coffee, go for a walk or see a movie? (Just because the person has mental illness doesn’t mean he/she won’t want to do regular activities), What is your diagnosis and how do you feel about it?, Do you need to talk?, Sometimes talking can help make things feel a little better, What can I do to be there for you, and help you feel supported?, How can I support you – can I listen to you, leave you alone, give you a hug?, How has living with this condition shaped who you are today?, How are you? You don’t seem like yourself, and I want to know how you’re really feeling because I care about you. “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” — Albus Dumbledore from “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (submitted by Eva Gigis). “Sometimes you climb out of bed in the morning and you think, I’m not going to make it, but you laugh inside — remembering all the times you’ve felt that way.”— Charles Bukowski from “Gamblers All” (submitted by Ashley Mobley).
Mental Health...involves effective functioning in daily activities resulting in Productive activities (work, school, caregiving), Healthy relationships, Ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity. Mental Illness...refers collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders — health conditions involving, Significant changes in thinking, emotion and/or behavior, Distress and/or problems functioning in social, work or family activities.
1. Talk about your feelings:
Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled.
2. Keep active:
Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and can help you concentrate, sleep, and feel better. Exercise keeps the brain and your other vital organs healthy and is also a significant benefit towards improving your mental health. 3. Eat well: Your brain needs a mix of nutrients in order to stay healthy and function well, just like the other organs in your body. A diet that’s good for your physical health is also good for your mental health.
4. Drink sensibly:
We often drink alcohol to change our mood. Some people drink to deal with fear or loneliness, but the effect is only temporary. When the drink wears off, you feel worse because of the way the alcohol has affected your brain and the rest of your body. Drinking is not a good way to manage difficult feelings.
5. Keep in touch:
There’s nothing better than catching up with someone face to face, but that’s not always possible. You can also give them a call, drop them a note, or chat to them online instead. Keep the lines of communication open: it’s good for you!
6. Ask for help:
None of us are superhuman. We all sometimes get tired or overwhelmed by how we feel or when things don’t go to plan. If things are getting too much for you and you feel you can’t cope, ask for help. Your family or friends may be able to offer practical help or a listening ear. Local services are there to help you.
7. Take a break
A change of scene or a change of pace is good for your mental health. It could be a five-minute pause from cleaning your kitchen, a half-hour lunch break at work, or a weekend exploring somewhere new. A few minutes can be enough to de-stress you. Give yourself some ‘me time’.
8. Do something you’re good at
What do you love doing? What activities can you lose yourself in? What did you love doing in the past? Enjoying yourself can help beat stress. Doing an activity, you enjoy probably means you’re good at it, and achieving something boosts your self-esteem.
9. Accept who you are:
We’re all different. It’s much healthier to accept that you’re unique than to wish you were more like someone else. Feeling good about yourself boosts your confidence to learn new skills, visit new places and make new friends. Good self-esteem helps you cope when life takes a difficult turn.
10. Care for others:
‘Friends are really important… We help each other whenever we can, so it’s a two-way street, and supporting them uplifts me.’ Caring for others is often an important part of keeping up relationships with people close to you. It can even bring you closer together.
“Promise me you’ll always remember — you’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” — Christopher Robin from “Winnie the Pooh” (submitted by Monica Jean Cozadd). “Start by doing what’s necessary, then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” — Saint Francis of Assisi (submitted by Sherri Paricio Bornhoft). Most people who do not want to address mental illness. But there's nothing to be afraid of mental illness! It is just like heart disease or diabetes a medical condition. Yet symptoms of mental health can be controlled. They constantly broaden our knowledge of the workings of the human brain and therapies that assist people in the effective control of mental health conditions.
