Big question cause I’m so mad about how they were used: any ideas on changing Berryheart and Curlfeather from this book?

I have ONE controversial opinion and you must allow me this;

Curlfeather not apologizing to Frostdawn kinda rocks as an idea.

Obviously it reads as insulting because of how they gave Berryheart a Tom the Wifebeater ass Redemption Death in this book, and the general way that they've not approached her with the nuance she deserves is frustrating. I agree.

But hold my hand and walk with me. Imagine Curlfeather, mauled and bloody before the daughter she died saving. Frostpaw's gone through so much fixing the damage she caused, furious at the state her mother's in, the mess she made of RiverClan, all the suffering everyone's gone through... and Curlfeather says,

"I don't regret anything."

"Really? REALLY? I go through all of that, I come ALL this way, and you won't even give me a rotten little sorry?"

She doesn't give her mother a chance to respond, lashing her tail towards the grimmace that hangs off the side of her shredded cheek, "You're not sorry for how you lead to yourself looking like THAT?"

Frostpaw shoves her scarred throat foward, "You're not sorry for THIS?"

She claws dig into the sodden black earth of the Dark Forest, "You're not sorry you're HERE?"

Curlfeather is quiet, her remaining eye stoic like a stone. Frostpaw begs furiously, "NOTHING?"

"I will vow on our blood that I will not lie to you anymore," the demon's tone is soft and honest, "and I hope that means more than the insincere apology I could offer you otherwise."

Just when it feels like Frostpaw has so much anger that her body can't handle it, pain stuffs itself inside her in equal measure. Her stomach is sick with love, throat choked with affection. It takes her a minute to form the word,

"Why?"

"When my father, Reedwhisker, was taken by the Kin, I saw how they broke him. His uncle, Stonefur, did not buckle under Tigerstar. My grandmother Mistyfoot quietly rescued the Clan from his accomplice, Leopardstar, while Mistystar willingly worked alongside a vicious impostor."

Now that Frostpaw is the one who's waiting quietly, Curlfeather's voice flutters hopefully, "I was willing to do anything to restore my Clan to greatness," the specter pads foward, touching her nose to her daughter's trembling forehead, "except sacrifice you."

She didn't expect to feel the harsh sting of her daughter's paw smacking her across the nose. She reels back.

"You don't get it! It's not about YOU! It's about everyone you hurt! Dont try to pretend it was all worth it, you didn't make anything great, you just broke it!"

"I had to break it so it could be set back stronger. I gave you the chance for the power, and now you are making it better than it was."

"That was in spite of you! You told me to trust no cat and I had to unlearn that!"

"I saved you when I could have escaped with my life."

"From a situation you caused in the first place!"

"It was a warrior's death!"

There is a silence that settles over them. Curlfeather is snarling in offense. Frostpaw looks, again, at her mother's fatal wounds, the defensive stance. She's reminded of how the cats of other cultures don't always see scars as rewards for a fight survived-- just reminders of pain you've gone through.

"...it was a warrior's death," she agrees, gently, watching tattered hackles smoothen out, "...and now you're dead, while I'm still alive."

The emotion in Curlfeather's face is solemn, but otherwise incomprehensible to her daughter. The expression on Frostpaw's is equally unreadable to her mother. This is the only thing they will ever understand about each other-- that there is an irreconcilable difference between them, steeper than the divide between sky and earth.

The last words the demon speaks to her daughter are, "I love you."

It's only years later that Frostdawn can say, "I love you too."

The party was… boring. Everyone was pissed, but in the annoying way, and Lily could not wait until they’d all leave to clean up the common room and finally sleep. She had been drinking the same gin tonic for at least an hour, and the couch had already sunk where she was seated. Her eyes had started to close on their own, allowing her to slowly float away into a dream. Maybe sleeping in the common room wasn’t so bad.

“Why don’t you like me?” James blurted out.

“Excuse me?” Lily said blinking rapidly. She hadn’t even noticed him.

“I try sooo hard for you to notice me and like me but I can never get to you, so please Evans I’m desperate I’ll do anything to get you to like me.”

“I do notice you.” Lily said smirking “you’re incredibly annoying.”

“So you want me to stop annoying you? is that it? Consider it a done deal.”

She considered it, imagined peacefully walking down the halls and eating lunch and classes without James making faces at her, the amount of time she could put into her studies without him talking over her every time. She thought about the quiet dinners, early bed times, casual breakfasts and smooth classes. The thought of it alone made her want to kill herself. “Nah, it’s ok.”

“Is it my face? I can change it!” James said pointing his wand at his face “Who can I turn into?”

The sudden fear that James’s face could turn into anything different forced her to turn around and stop him. Which was great because she could see how his brown eyes were surrounded by some deep shade of red instead of his usual white sclera. “Oh fuck, James are you high?”

He sat up suddenly and looked down, and with a really high pitched voice he said “who? Me? You’re crazy Evans.”

“You’re high as shit!” Lily laughed.

James looked at her uncertainly. “Not as shit, it’s going down I swear.”

“God you’re so stupid.” She cackled.

“Are you disappointed? Did I offend you? I’m sorry.” James fidgeted with his hands.

“Don’t worry, I won’t tell.” Lily smiled. “Where are your little followers.”

“If you mean my friends, I only know Sirius and Remus are upstairs so I have to wait down here some time.”

“Why would you have to wait here?”

“You know why.” James said wiggling his eyebrows.

Lily looked at him attentively. He knew something. Suddenly this night became interesting. “I do not. Tell me.”

James started fidgeting and looked askance.

“James.” Lily grabbed his face. “Tell me. Now.”

“Look, if you don’t know I can’t tell you.”

“Tell ya what,” she said ignoring her voice of reason. If she were a cat, she would most certainly be dead by now. “Trade you one secret for another.”

James whole demeanor changed, his mouth spread into a huge smile and Lily could see his imaginary-dog-tail wagging behind him. “How about a kiss for a secret?”

“Bummer, I had such a good secret to tell you. What a shame.” She dramatically threw her head back and put the back of her hand to her forehead.

“Fine! But it’s top secret, so i’ll have to whisper it.”

“Ugh, fine.” Lily sighed leaning over and placing her ear at James’s level. He obviously took the opportunity and kissed her cheek smiling. “James!”

“Sorry! Couldn’t help it you’re so beautiful Evans.”

“Tell me!” She punched his arm.

“Remus and Sirius are upstairs… well… i dont really know how to put it…”

“James, if you dont tell me this instant I’ll go get Mcgonagall and tell her how high you are and get you kicked out of… Of everything! Every club, every merit you have won,” she snapped her fingers. “Gone!”

His eyes widened in fear. He hesitated for a moment but then slowly approached her ear and whispered. “They are together. Like, together together.”

“What the fuck are you talking about.”

“You know, they are together, alone in our room, I can’t go there… Get it?!”

“Huh?!”

“They are fucking, Evans.”

Lily froze. No they weren’t. She would have known. Remus would have said something. They are best friends, of course she’d know. “Come on James, a real secret.”

“I mean it.”

“No James, I would know.”

“No you wouldn’t. No one does. I swear.”

“Then why do you-“

“I caught them showering together.”

Lily looked at him incredulous and burst out laughing. “No way.”

“You can go check for your self for all I care, just know they are messy, it’s not a very pretty image.”

She thought about it, let it sink in and suddenly, things made sense. Remus was happy, he was always sneaking off somewhere with a lousy explanation and she had caught him more often than not smiling at nothing or being strangely flustered during lessons. Remus and Sirius were fucking. Holy shit.

“Oh my god.” She became aware of her labored breathing. “ Oh my GOD! HOW?! WHAT?! HOW?! OH THAT CUNT!”

“Inner voice!” James fretted.

“Right sorry.” She said slumping back down. “How? Why wouldn’t he tell me?! God I’ll kill that bastard, how could he! I’m his best friend.”

“I know I was pretty freaked out myself.” James laughed.

“This is so unfair why do you know and I don’t?”

“Oi! I am best friends to both of them, mind you. Also trust me I did not want to know, wrong place wrong time.”

“Fuck.” Lily breathed out “Fuck!”

“Come on Evans, it’s not that ba-“

“It’s so unfair! Why doesn’t Remus trust me? I’ve never said anything- No wait I have said multiple things about hating Sirius.” She said chugging the left overs from her cup. “Besides you’re such a terrible secret keeper! I’d trust Pete way more than you.”

“He knows.”

“OH MY GOODNESS?! Does everyone but me know?!”

“Just us, promise.”

“What am I supposed to do now? Play dumb?”

“Ideally. please.” James asked, his eyes glistening.

“This is fucked. I hate him.” She said crossing her arms. “I can’t play dumb, James, I just can’t! I’m so mad!”

James smiled as he shifted closer to her. “Need me to kiss it better?”

“Fuck off.” Lily fought a smile.

They sat in silence for a moment, Lily kept staring at the wall in front of her as rage and some bitter resentment pooled in her blood, she breathed hard and considered just walking up there and beating Remus into a pulp, or at least try to. Meanwhile James sat with his arm over the back rest, holding his head and looking at Lily with a smile.

“What?” She burst.

“You are so beautiful.” James smiled as an idea slowly formed into his brain. “You owe me.”

Lily grew angrier remembering their deal, she had no secret, or maybe she had too many, but they were too big to tell now. “I peed my pants once in fourth year after acing a test I thought I was going to fail.”

James burst into laughter. “Hilarious. But I told you a huge secret, so I’ll need something better.”

“I don’t have big secrets.” She lied.

“Come on! It’s so unfair!” He whined.

“If you help me bust them, i’ll tell you my biggest secret.”

“No! Leave them be, they need this trust me.” His eyes grew as he sentence finished.

“Fine!” She thought of something better. She needed to win this. “If you let me tell Remus you told me I’ll tell you two.”

“Deal!”

“I’m not wasted enough for this…” She mumbled. “I actually really like you.”

“I knew that!”

“No James, I really do like you. Like, like like you.”

He was frozen, the weirdest smile she’d ever seen hanging off his face, rising and falling each second. Then he just… laughed?

“Oh come on! I’m really not in the mood Potter!”

“I have for some time now. Quite some time. Since last year actually.”

“Wow.”

“Ok then, goodnight!” She said standing up so quickly she saw stars. Maybe she was drunk enough.

“No!” She hurried before he could actually convince her.

So I have this horrible brain disease that makes me violently afraid of being cringe. (Crazy, I know, considering how much I post about cringe culture being dead and stuff) so putting them so interwoven into the story as I did was already a huge step for me (again. Crazy. I’m aware) but they do not have fanseasons of their own quite yet.

I’m really only gonna address Charlie and Toni in this one, bc Mirai is so underdeveloped and I have yet to even draw him, and Kit is a traveler from my own universe and has their own entire set of lore and stuff, and it would be too much to describe atm so Kit. Sorry.

Toni fits in end of season 5, she’s like. Freshly 18 and pursuing a journalism career, so gets a ride out to Stiix (yes. While it’s an active battleground.) so she can stop Jay and interview him. From there, they’re mostly doing background shit (I know. All of the shit they do. In my brain.) until abtttttt season 7, they switch jobs to work at Chen’s Noodles n starts dating Skylor, and tries being helpful n do investigative shit for the ninja in season 8, but. It. Goes badly. Yay yippeeeeee

Charlie, I love Charlie shes my little eensy. Charlie is an intensely tragic character and uh. I did that to her. Rip Charlie. She’s not technically relevant or fitting into the series until season 8, but the lore that lead her to that point starts at season 1 when the great devourer tradgedy happens and Charlie is the only remaining survivor of her family at 13 (family being a strong word for her grandma, and single mom, both of which. Did not fucking like Charlie.) but. Charlie essentially had to dig herself out of the rubble, and realized quickly that she’d been brushed off and counted as dead which started her crazy villain arc (not. Not rlly.) a bit down the road, with nowhere else to turn, she joins the Sons of Garmadon, and just kinda. Works with them, beats up Toni when Toni starts getting too nosy (in season 8 now) but then kinda. Fucks off when Garmadon actually gets resurrected, bc Charlie’s heart really wasn’t in it and she kinda, didn’t expect them to actually do it so that one’s on her for being. Stupid. But whatever.

Charlie is also kinda relevant in DR. More relevant than in Ninjago, and more relevant than Toni ended up being.

So like, end of season one Charlie is found being held in an Imperium prison and convinces Lloyd to help them out a little, and. Goes home with them (like a stray cat or smth) where Lloyd tells the kids ‘DONT fuck with her, literally don’t even look at her she’ll be gone soon’ but. Charlie doesn’t leave. And becomes someone they can trust a little more and someone the DR kids like a lot, so while Lloyd has an intense distrust n dislike for Charlie, Charlie is like ‘woooo yippeeeeee hahahah :)’ and genuinely isn’t trying to hurt them or anything.

so pattons HOPE is that they all wind up in a big polycule pile, and its doesnt... not do that, but its not quite as clearcut as all that.

Theres stumbling blocks at the beginning withboth remy and roman wavering on whether or not their romantic feelings are genuine, and subsequently wondering if the fact that theeyre still in love with Emile and LAM respectively means that they arent.

this would go through some oscillations of both of them trying to deny those feelings to "prove" their love for each other, vs trying to push the other away so they can go be with p[eople they "really love"

do! not! separate them!

in my head this ends with romantic LAMP, Romantic Remile, Romantic Patmile, and QPR losleep and sleepxiety - everybody else is friends and cuddle buddies

Remy is actually super comforted by the fact that Patton is in love with him/attracted to him but never asks for more than friendship because he knows remy isnt. Metamour besties.

Dizzy suffers a lot from this ordeal (she hid from durant and subsequently roman, knowing if he found her as romans familiar it would be catastrophic) so their bond is.... stretched, lets say. overtaxed. she's a little sicklier. a little smaller, a little more timid. hides in remy or virgils jackets frequently

All of which is to say that this is a fraught extended metaphor that sometimes trauma changes you, and it changes your relationships, and it changes the way you feel attraction, and all of that is okay. it doesnt make those feelings or relationships less real or loving or valid.

maege and galbart are ambiguously with howland in the neck with robb's will that says jon is heir. there's evidence they made it and maege is "with lyra and [jorelle]" but probably not at bear island, because lyanna is the only one there. there have since no mentions of galbart's whereabouts

howland of course is the last living person with knowledge of r+l=j

robb's will was made under the belief that bran and rickon were dead and that sansa and arya were ???, leaving that document in limbo. also jon is dead

my belief is maege and galbart had their meeting with howland and are in some kind of hiding rn. i don't think howland told them about r+l=j because it's honestly sooo unrelated to the northern political situation. all it does is make things way more chaotic and puts jon in a really precarious position.

ROBB'S WILL: LADY STONEHEART

LSH has robb's crown and since cat was at the signing of the will it's possible she could crown jon. people link her to maege and galbart but lsh is clearly doing her own thing right now and does not gaf about her bastard stepson

the lannister/freys lost the brotherhood somewhere in the neck so its possible LSH is up there slaying it up with howland.

i think the LSH/howland collusion is a little iffy. LSH is not in her right mind because her brain is rotting in her cracked skull. i just dont see her scheming a huge political conspiracy rn.

personally im of the opinion LSH is on a course towards arya and/or sansa, not jon. or at least her nexus is at her daughters. she is on a revenge quest, not avenge quest. she wants to kill RW participants, not complete robb's will.

plus imo if LSH and the brotherhood are scheming anything, its a red wedding 2.0 massacre

again this is all under the assumption that this is LSH's plan, which i doubt. i think this part of the conspiracy is the least credible and i think a lot of these 'clues' or whatever are probably about a possible red wedding 2.0 (or attack on the lannister camp) as opposed to Everything Is About Jon. those tully men are sus though...

JOURNAL TRANSCRIPT: hello blog!! i got myself an iced matcha latte from my favorite local cafe today! it was really good. but it like, it got me thinking… will any little treat i buy myself ever make me feel better about how freakin' lonely i am?? man, i dunno why i started thinking like that… i get matcha all the dang time. so often they're starting to feel more like breadcrumbs. i think it'd taste like something again if i shared it with someone. i think i peaked in high school. that was when i had friends and before all that awful stuff happened and yeah maybe i wasn't doing great but i had people. and then they all went to college or got married or had babies or something and… augh!! i can't be bitter!! they're living their best life… just… without me. and now every time i reach out i get brushed off, pushed away… i want someone who won't leave me. will i ever have someone who won't leave me? maybe i won't. maybe i should just accept that. everyone always leaves. i've been nothing but kind to people, i really think that, so what am I doing wrong? ohh boy this one really spiraled outta control didn't it… sorry ;-; i'm just gonna save it and go think for a bittt….

THIS WAS A VERY FUN EXERCISE for character design and branching out with my art style (i did in fact draw both of these characters.. it's probably pretty obvious but i tried to make them look like they were sorta drawn in different styles like the canon girls bc it's cool i think. if that makes sense JSDFJSDF) and coming up with metaphors, i actually had so many other girl ideas that got scrapped for one reason or another, and only two came out unscathed... there may be more... in the future... as for songs, i don't know if that'll ever happen. i have most of the tools, aside from voice synth, so i'd probably just use my own voice. which might be CRINGEEE (ironic statement) so we'll see how that goes!! ^^' don't... don't count on it...

piercing headcanons because i was thinking about my own and then the brain juices started rolling in:

Phil used to have piercings. he got his ears pierced while he and Techno were still in the early/mid stage of their friendship. the two have matching emerald earrings, Phil's was a stud and Techno's was the dangly kind, but he also had a stud, for when he needed to make sure his earring didn't tangle in his hair. after awhile of having his ears pierced though, Phil began to notice his ears would be sensitive whenever he took the earrings in and out, when he would swap them. eventually, they started getting less sensitive and more painful. so, he let his piercings close up, switching his emerald stud with Techno's dangly one. he took the dangly earring, and changed it to where it was no longer an earring, but instead little charm, that he could put on his hat, on a bag, any of those. he only ever got his ears pierced, and he let those close up as they got too painful to handle.

Techno has had piercings longer than Phil. he did most of them himself, but he has let Phil help him in the process, making sure he didnt pass out afterwards [especially with the ear piercings, those things make you dizzy afterwards. i dont know about any other piercings, but ear piercings definitely make you dizzy] ect. he has studs, dangly earrings, all the earrings you can imagine. most of them are gold, though there are a few that are made of silver, and the matching emerald he has with Phil. he has a nose piercing, he used to wear those clunky, silly rings in the middle like how people often depict bulls having, but changed to a golden stud with a red jewel in the middle on the side. yes, he may have a pig snout, but he can still have nose piercings, okay?

Ranboo.. okay, I know this might sound weird, but in my [personal] design of him, he has a small eye of ender hanging from their ear. yes yes, i can hear you now saying "but eye of enders are made from enderpearls, and those are dropped by endermen when you kill them" yes, i understand that its weird to have your species loot as an earring, but it looks nice, and honestly, how about we think of it as a tribute to dead endermen or something. anyways, other than that earring, he has black studs and sometimes, they wear funky little earrings. i like to imagine he and Niki share a jewelry box, and they both have a collection of cute little earrings, like cat paws, rainbows, flowers, ect. just cause theyre cute. Also they have sensitive ears. Can't wear certain earrings, like cheap ones or copper ones.

Niki's got nose piercings and ear piercings. She's got a simple stud on her nose, which she'll sometimes change out with a little gold ring. She's got cartilage piercings, lobe piercings, all that jazz. She mostly wears those cute earrings both she and Ranboo own, the ones the two share. She sometimes wears small hoops on her ears. Most of her jewelry is silver, though she does have some metal and gold ones here and there.

Especially fl4k. i think it hasnt been *that* long since they gained sentience probably only a few decades or so but theyve been around for a. very long time) i really like the idea that zer0 is some kind of man-made alien cyborg...thing? so maybe they had the same/similar creators (considering they share some abilities) Either way i hope so so bad we get an actual canon explanation eventually

I woke to the white light of Harvey's Clinic. Worried murmurs were muffled from outside the room as my eyes adjusted to the blinding light.

I knew what happened, and though I was covered in bandages the only thing hurting was my ego. Shame and embarrassment suffocated me, and it only got worse when Harvey walked into the room, Maru at his side.

My face paled at that and I kept my head down as I stared at my lap. I was about to get lectured, again, and in front of her no less.

And for the record, no. I dont have a crush on her. Even her dad had assumed it, giving me the old fashion "stay away from my daughter" threat talk. I was tempted to tell the man I was gay, but when gossiping to Maru about her dads many issues, she was thankful i hadnt.

"Y/N! oh thank goodness you are awake, it took you longer this time round. You werent holding out on me now, were you?"

Maru gave a look as I glanced up, my silence caused a flicker of frustration across her face as she crossed her arms over her chest. My mouth formed a thin line as I looked back down at my lap.

"Hm, 'This time around'? What do you mean by that Harvey?" Her voice was sweet, but I can tell without looking there was a bitterness in her tone. All those times I bumped into Sebastian, Robin.. hell maybe even Demetrius, her father, and lied to them about my state of health? Well the cats of the bag now.

"Oh you dont know? This kids a wreck! Goes out to the mines, comes back half dead," Harvey turns to me, a stern look on his face that I catch a glimpse of as he sits down on his stool.

"Listen kiddo, I dont know what Im going to do with you. You really gotta be more careful. Let me do one last check and then Ill send you on your way, alright?" He bent down a bit to catch my eye, I reluctantly nodded and laid back to allow the doctor to do his thing.

It was raining, and it only dampened my mood. I was aching all over, the pain medication Harvey had give me for the time being a weight in my hand as I shoved them into my pocket.

It was still early, and with so much time in the day it felt useless to go home and rest.

The walk to the beach was short, my mind elsewhere as my body moved on basically auto pilot.

The change from wet sand to slippery wood is what caught my attention, and I nearly missed the figure standing at the end of the dock. Sebastian was there, hair damp and flat as his cloths looked darker than usual from the rain. He mustve been out there for awhile.

Thinking about it, one of the first days I had moved here, I found him sitting in nearly the same spot. He talked about how weirdly calming it was, even in the unforgiving downpour. At first, I had laughed at the thought. Being cold and alone in the rain? I couldnt see how thatd bring comfort at all.

Yet, here I was.

I hadnt even said anything, approaching his side as I sat down on the wet wood. I felt his eyes on me, but the feeling grew more intense as I suddenly felt my arm being tugged. I whipped my head toward him in surprise, seeing his concerned expression as he examined my wounds. I felt my embarrassment return.

"What the hell happened to you?" He asked, looking up from my bandages, that were starting to fall apart from the rain, and at me. I wanted to look away from his gaze, feeling shameful but the stern look he gave made me feel like a kid who had gotten caught.

"..Mines. I wasnt as careful as I shouldve been." I say, blankly. I doubt that no matter how sorry I was, he'd be off the wall upset that I had lied to him. I just didnt want anyone to worry about me, I didnt want to think about how difficult it would be to explain the concept of this stupid game I was playing with life.

He dropped my arm, a look of slight betrayal on his face. Taking a deep breath he slumped down beside me, his arms crossed over his chest. Just like his sister, heh.

There was silence for awhile, the rain filling in the gaps of unspoken words. I knew Sebastian wanted to be angry with me, maybe he felt since I was physically injured he'd spare my feelings.

"I wish you wouldve told me, how dangerous it was."

Spoke too soon.

"I know, Im sorry. Your sister gave me the dirtiest of looks when she saw me at Harvey's." I gave a weak chuckle, even with the gray sky's I had hopped to lighten the situation, if only a little.

The lack of reply made me feel uncomfortable, so I continued to ramble on,

"I didnt want people worrying over me. I know thats terrible to say, and impossible to wish for- we're humans, it's natural to worry, to"

I paused, almost as if my own words were surprising me.

"to... care."

I held my arms out in front of me, seeing the damage done beneath the bloodied bandages. The image before me getting blurry as my eyes filled with tears. I opened my mouth to speak, but I wasnt sure I trusted my voice.

"I didnt think.. people cared about me that way. Hell I, I think Im afraid of it. Of people caring. Maybe, I dont deserve it,?" I basically whispered my confession, my shame coming back to hit me 10x harder when I saw Sebastian stand.

This was it, this was the crushing reality I had been waiting for. I wouldnt shut up, and now I made him uncomfortable. Maybe I can understand why Shane prefers his drunken'd state.

All that doubt washed away as Sebastians hand came into view.

"Cmon, lets get out of the rain. Youre starting to shiver."

I was shocked, but obeyed regardless. Taking his hand he pulled me up, wrapping his arm around me to hold me close. I felt the color return to my face, he was out in the rain for as long as me, if not longer and he still radiated off heat like he was a mini heater.

It wasnt long till we reached his house and walked down to his room.

"Stay there."

He stopped me outside his door. Before I could ask why, a clean pair of cloths was presented in front of me, "Bathrooms upstairs to the left, past the kitchen. Change into those and come back when youre done."

I stared at him in disbelief. I wanted to ask so many questions, but all I could muster was a soft,

"Why?"

He stared for a moment, a soft smile stretching across his face as he placed a hand on top of my head.

"Because I care."

Rolin Rising

So, I'm not gonna lie here. I bogged right the hell down in what I am told is something of a rite of passage with the Throne of Glass (TOG) series: I read the first witches chapter and couldn't have cared LESS. After getting permission to skip a couple of them though, I got moving again and actually thoroughly enjoyed this book and it's climactic conclusion. Let's talk Heir of Fire.

As is par for the course for this blog, there are SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT. Be warned and proceed at your own risk.

Ok, SJM structures her books in such a way that it's easier to jut take her books by POV character(s), ships, and geographic groups, so that's what we are gonna do here.

Rolin (I have no idea if this is the official ship name, but its better than Aelan)

*Stares in baffled confusion between Rolin and Feysand*

I swear, this section is going to be about more than comparing key ships, but I read ACOTAR before TOG, and I am fucking baffled as to how you write a couple like Aelin and Rowan only to follow it up with Feyre and Rhsand. The former is made of interesting characters who complement and contrast each other and who are deeply interesting to watch because despite their differences, they dont feel toxic. The latter is...Feyre making Rhysand and painting (sometimes. Usually off-page or in her head more than in reality) her entire personality at age 20. I don't understand the progression is what I'm saying, and I am so much less interested in Feysand after reading Heir of Fire.

Ok, I'm done bashing Feysand. Rowan and Aelin's relationship in this book did not start as something I thought I'd enjoy. Aelin was sad and self-destructive in ways that felt narratively draggy after the first two books, and Rowan was just a dick. But as they were forced to exist in each others' space and train and survive skinwalkers (put a pin in that, we'll get there*) and Valg Princes, their dynamic developed in a way that felt earned and organic, and I ended up deeply invested in their relationship.

Possibly my favorite overall piece of their relationship is that neither quite gets the other until HELLA late in the game; it might even be fair to say that they don't fully get each other by the end of this book. Rowan was floored when Aelin yote herself into a death battle (low-key I think he should have seen that coming, but I guess soldiers don't imagine people flouting orders and lying to a commander's face), and Aelin really had to come to terms with herself before she really could get into understanding Rowan.

I also like that they are allowed to fuck up. Notably Rowan's early threat to take a whip to Aelin. She genuinely would have murdered him for that. That's also not entirely his fault, because Maeve withheld information, but once they like each other enough to communicate civilly, they work that stuff out.

The other really good thing about Rowan and Aelin's relationship is that their dynamic is two people who stand together but make their own choices. That can often get overlooked or trampled in romantic relationships, but Aelin is extremely herself, and I love that.

I also cannot wait to see how Aedion reacts to Rowan having sworn a blood oath to HIS queen...

Manon, Abraxos, and the Witches

Ok, so for all that not loving the witches in this book is a canon reader experience (I am told by the memes and my sister), I really only skipped a couple of chapters before the witches caught me too. I just incidentally thought I'd skim a chapter, and it turned out to be the one where Abraxos murders the crap out of Titus (I think was his name? He's dead though, nobody carea). And y'all? It wasn't Manon who grabbed my heart; it was Abraxos. Abraxos, who wanted to live so badly, who chose Manon so hard the entire culture felt it, and who likes wildflowers stole my heart right out of my chest and cuddled with it like a cat with a ball of yarn.

If anything happens to Abraxos, we riot.

Now, while Abraxos had my heart immediately, Manon grew on me more slowly. The fact that the witches are literally raised as little sociopaths and the cracks are starting to show is interesting, and I'm definitely interested in seeing how this develops. Also, I cannot WAIT for Manon to put her grandmother down, because that woman is VICIOUS.

Chaol and Aedion's Excellent Adventure

Ok, so Chaol and Aedion are kind of...on deck...this entire book. They're just kind of biding time and making sure the resistance stays alive and playing politics while they're waiting for Celaena/Aelin to make her next move. Their dynamic is more or less two soldiers who are strange bedfellows out of necessity and don't REALLY trust each other, but they have enough in common that they sort of grow on each other. Reluctantly. It's actually very cute.

Also, Aedion pulling that final self-sacrifice play to try to save everyone at the end and to get Chaol out because he meant something to Aelin bumped him up SEVERAL significant notches in my estimation.

Chaol took Fleetfoot with him when he bailed on Adarlan, so he gets pupper protection points.

Dorian Needs a Hug

Dorian Havillard is having a terrible time this book. He's terrified of his own magic, down bad for a pretty healer, and sans his childhood best friend and murder Barbie BFF. He's also ingesting iron to try to keep his magic from being outed, hiding his healer from his father (who already murdered her parents and would murder her without a second thought), and feeling hella betrayed because Chaol thinks he's evil and scary for his magic. This man needs a hug SO BADLY at the beginning of the book.

That's nothing compared to how badly he needs a hug after his girlfriend is revealed to be a spy and beheaded in front of him, is *probably* captured by his Dad after his magic being explicitly outed, and everyone who could help him either already in chains or fleeing for their lives.

SJM and Cutlrual Appropriation*

Ok, let's get back to that skinwalker pin for a sec here. Red from OSP has a great little mini talk in the Urban Fantasy Trope Talk on why appropriating the term "skinwalker" from Navajo lore is...IFFY AT BEST, so I'm not going to reiterate why using the term here is perhaps not the best choice and should probably have been run through a sensitivity reader and axed in the drafts. But I do want to just...highlight that SJM is still very, very comfortable with wholesale nabbing stuff from global mythologies and folklore, stripping it of its context, and dropping it into her books without really doing any REcontextualizing. Because SJM's baddies in this more are more magical Freddie Kreuger than anything else, and to use a specifically Navajo term for that low-key gives me the ick. I'm not a fan of this in SJM's work as a whole. It feels appropriative, and the fact that a lot of the bad guys are from colonized (or attempted genocided, in the case of Indigenous American mythologies) people just intensifies the ick. Part of seeing all of a story you love is not ignoring the problems, and this is VERY MUCH an ongoing problem with SJM books.

So overall, I had fun with this book. The pacing at the beginning is a little rough, but the character and relationship dynamics are well handled, and I enjoyed a lot of this book. Abraxos is also just awesome, and I will die on this hill.

Oh, wow an ask!

I'm not a big writer, but I defo think theey would be more couple-y with each other. They still love each other, but at the same time, a lot happened, since then.

I would imagine something-something being a bit standoffish. They would have some lingering resentment, that undermines their immense love for one another.

G: You abadoned our son (even if I know you never meant to leave)

M: Well, you abandoned me first... (even if I know you didn't mean to get venom-ed)

I want some domestic fluff moments, nothing extra, just hugs, and touches that last a bit longer. I could imagine Lloyd being like "I could have had that..."

So basically fucked up people trying their best to be better together, and to give Lloyd a childhood that was forcibly ripped away from him.

Garmadons sacrifice would happen, and Misako would refuse to grieve, dead set on being the single parental figure, and a steady point for Lloyd. I could see her getting a bit overbearing, maybe in her moments alone we would see her staring longingly at a picture of her, Wu, Garmadon and wittle baby Lloyd.

Wu would help her get her feelings out there, and just generally be there, no shipping involved. She would be very closed and hostile at first

M: You can't understand!

W: I can. That day, not only did you loose a husband. I lost a brother.

Oh wow, that got dark fast. Back to the fluff! They would be troublemakers as both young, and old people. Also, as a sidehobby, playing fiddle on Wu's last braincell.

Obligatory HoT, side tangent: Here we are, sons of god, masters of nature, and this random archeologist we found in the trash, we can't get rid of her halp.

Also, they both have a gremlin side, and they make each other ten times worse. Definitely pranked the EMs, but they couldn't do shit about it. When they asked wu he just said, "lol, now you know my pain"

But only they can break Wu's rules, and set his last braincell on fire, because you mess with my brother (-in law) you mess with me

Lastly, before the cat law applied to Lloyd, it applied to Garmadon. If he fell asleep on you Misako and/or Wu would just stand in the doorway. Watching. And waiting Making sure you play by the rules :)
