You've asked, and we've answered! ...a lot! Here's a compilation of (most of) the questions we've been asked, all in one place.

What types of submissions are not allowed? Anything that 1. makes the mods uncomfortable or 2. is inaccessible (... for people using screenreaders, for people with low vision, for people with migraines, etc). There's a list here, but that's just stuff that's come up often enough we feel the need to mention it. A good rule of thumb is that the closer it is to any real-life horrible thing, the less inclined we are to post.

Genocide, especially if your ask can be summed up as "AITA for committing/being the victim of genocide?" (Also, if you explicitly term what the POV character has done as genocide, we immediately stop caring about if that's actually accurate.)

SA of any kind, especially if your ask can be summed up as "AITA for committing/being the victim of SA?"

Incest, especially if it is really central to the submission (Also, we may have a different definition of incest than you, so be warned in advance in case your submission that you thought was fine gets sent back or deleted.)

Do I have to tell you if I’m submitting something from a fic/roleplay/AU/OC/whatever?

You do not! You can if you want to but it doesn’t make a difference to us.

Can we post stuff that has spoilers for X media? Yes*. * Please don't send in submissions for stuff that's less than a month old, as we can't realistically tag spoilers.** ** The exception to this is remakes/adaptations/remasters/etc, which we don't consider to be "new"*** *** Unless something new actually is added, in which case only that specific thing is considered "new." i literally havent been able to stop thinking about the wbcd thing, its so needed in the series. how do you decide which cats die when? do you weigh eventual offspring when deciding, like thornkit/claw eventually having four kits while lynxkit obviously having none? will "important" canonical deaths like swiftpaw, brindleface, etc count towards the death count for the season, or will those types of things be bonus deaths?

figured i'd answer this b4 i went to bed!

i need to scrub the wbcd posts from my queue and rewrite them up to a higher standard, but i'm going to keep the outcomes the same. i've gotten the hang of things now.

anyway, this is all done in one notebook, and the way i do it for wbcd is a little Special. (i've done similar things for fan-ish clans to make sure the numbers work out. they do, generally. sometimes you have bad luck.)

but wbcd doesn't account for moving to the elders' den, increased death rates because of moving to the elders' den, and i don't think i was doing double rolls (i'll explain) last time i queued the posts.

(it's a bit of a mess rn is why i need to scrub and rewrite. or maybe start a(nother) sideblog for it? just for my own sanity?)

anyway.

i've done this out a few times, and i've decided writing shit out by hand is best. maybe i just have no restraint and overcomplicate shit when i start typing, and someone else could make it work.

so first up, determining leader lives: i literally knock off 2/book. if i'm doing something for a fanclan, i generate numbers the same way i do for litters, a normal distribution with mean 2 and standard deviation 4. N(2, 16) if you want to be fancy. i've considered lowering the standard deviation, but i like the swingy-ness of it. (i also permit "gaining" lives to account for this. it's a little hokey, but it makes leaders live for the Right amount of time.)

deputies have a 1/10 chance of dying every season. all of my numbers, here, are estimations based on my initial calculations, then smoothed out to a number that easily goes into 100. again, i do wbcd in batches, and my methodology has changed slightly, so it's possible i was still not rolling for deputies.

seers/medicine cats (seer = 4 letters, and i'm writing by hand, also it fits the Aesthetics of the idea) have a 1/20 chance in dying. i don't usually bother rolling for them, though, because their deaths uh. don't matter? bc wbcd follows canon timeline, i can kill them for drama as needed.

as for warriors, they have a 1/25 chance in dying every season. i believe i calculated the odds for 1/10 living to 40 seasons and 1/3 living to 40 seasons, and then found a number that was easy to remember in between. because i don't track elders in wbcd, no one ever actually retires, but when i do this for other things, i give elders 1/10 chance of dying. just to make sure they don't stack up.

but! wbcd is special because i don't just roll and move on. what i do is, i roll for every warrior, and then i shuffle deaths. did whitestorm die, but i need him to live long enough to be firestar's deputy? well, XYZ is right there not doing anything, why not kill them instead?

and so on.

there's certainly a bit of favouritism going on: when i decided to kill barley, it Hurt me a Lot. but it needed to be done.

the factors that go into my decision are about what their death does to the future. killing whitestorm before he becomes firestar's deputy is frustrating to the plot in ways i didn't want to deal with. killing darkstripe early does nothing.

so non-canon characters (i don't want to say ocs, bc it's more lynxkit, ravenpaw & barley, etc) have a higher risk of dying, because their deaths, well, by their nature their deaths Cannot change the plot.

but that's not the same as offspring. see, blossomfall and thornclaw's kits are very, very, very minor. stemleaf is the only one who matters, and i can easily work around that.

so important canonical deaths do count in the seasonal tally, because the numbers are supposed to be high for drama. the only exception to this is that i rolled really well for the season of the great battle, so i ended up using my litter size generator for an extra number of deaths. i'd do this again for a time when there was that kind of Big Event Death if i rolled "too well."

now, you didn't ask about this, but i want to be thorough: how do i do kits and apprentices?

okay, apprentices are my favourite part, because they're the only group that has dynamic odds. uh, i'm going to say seasons, but what i mean is, when i'm on my leafbare page, i then roll to see who lives through newleaf, and i call that the newleaf roll. i know it's confusing, that's just the convention i started with.

so anyway, seasonal odds of death for apprentices

newleaf: 0/1 greenleaf: 1/10 leaffall: 1/5 leafbare: 1/10

if you recall my overall apprentice odds, this might seem odd, but you have to remember that "leaffall" really means "1 out of 5 apprentices dies every greenleaf."

i've considered flipping this, but for reasons i'll explain in kits, having the newleaf "palette cleanser" means that the warmer months aren't as brutal as they seem.

so for kits: when there's a litter born in a season, i don't do anything. if there are multiple, i try to space them out. there's not like. a reason for this, other than helping me keep the numbers straight.

for seasons with no litters, i generate a litter size and pick a queen who's "free."

the litter size generated is N(3, 9), or mean 3, standard deviation 3. negative numbers mean nothing here, and there's a fair amount of Large Litters. it would be realistic to split those up, but that takes a Lot of time and bookkeeping.

anyway, generated litters usually have no father, because you know. keeping things moving here. i pick a free queen, which basically means:

the queen whose next canon litter and last litter in wbcd are furthest away.

this is a balancing act, and i usually favour not giving a couple an early litter before their first canon litter. but if, say, willowpelt needs to have a litter in two seasons, even if she could have two litters back to back, i don't like doing that.

so i might find someone who has had their last canon litter and give them an extra one, or someone who's a while away from their next litter.

for generated litters, i give them an extra roll. because i disregard negatives, litter sizes trend larger than intended, so an extra first roll keeps them down. all rolls for kits are 1/5 odds of death.

but if i roll a 5, i circle the bullet point, and roll twice next season. this is because 4/5 * 4/5 is 0.64, which is more than my ideal survival rate of 0.50. add in another 4/5, for the bonus roll, and you drop to 0.512. the occasional extra rolls sends some kits down to 0.40 survival rating.

one day, i will figure out what those odds are to see if my numbers are still accurate, but having played this scenario out pretty far, i think it works.

i also employ the double roll for apprentices. hence having no rolls in leafbare means i can sort of. stop anything from cycling over.

ROYALTY OF GONDOR

Anárion ft. Anárion, Elennúmen (OC), Ringelenë (OC), Almameldë (OC), Aspenindë (OC), Meneldil Anárion’s story is canon, though the details about his spouse and daughters are all headcanon. Anárion is said to have had four children, with Meneldil being the youngest, which is odd to me because Meneldil was the last man born in Númenor...but also he and his older siblings are all older than Isildur’s kids except for Elendur? Whatever. Maybe Anárion’s implied daughters were triplets or something. And Isildur’s dry spell of kids is kind of weird on its own.

Meneldil ft. Meneldil, Nyellelírë (OC), Cemendur of Gondor, Tinweriel (OC), Eärendil of Gondor, Aldalótë (OC), Anardil of Gondor, Elquassë (OC) We don’t actually know what Meneldil did during the War of the Last Alliance. Meneldil’s reaction to Isildur’s departure is canon, but has been embellished. We don’t know anything about Cemendur, Eärendil, or Anardil beyond their names; everything else about them is headcanon. “Atalantë” is another name for the event more commonly known as the Akallabêth. ETA 4/1/21: Fixed a minor timeline error.

Ostoher ft. Ostoher, Haldanárië (OC), Tarostar Rómendacil I, Ravandië (OC), Turambar of Gondor, Culindë (OC), Atanatar I, Rátavanië (OC) Ostoher did indeed remodel Minas Anor and turn it into his summer home, but his reasons why are a headcanon. Most of Rómendacil’s story is canon, though I made up the identity of his steward (you’ll see him again later in the series); for information on the Tradition of Isildur, see this article in the Encyclopedia of Arda. Turambar’s life is likewise mostly canon, though like his father’s story it’s been embellished here and there. Atanatar’s life is entirely headcanon.

Siriondil ft. King Siriondil, Ilvanya (OC), Tarannon Falastur, Zâinazimril Berúthiel, Círyan Everything about Siriondil is headcanon. Tarannon and Berúthiel’s story is canon at its roots, but has been spun to make Berúthiel much more sympathetic. Herumor is a real Black Númenórean from the end of the Second Age, but there’s no proof he was related to Berúthiel, nor that Berúthiel came specifically from Rhûn Harad; we only know that she was a Black Númenórean. Her Adûnaic name is my own creation, and her story has been greatly embellished. ETA 9/9/21: Changed Rhûn to Harad in order to better fit Herumor’s backstory.

Tarcíryan ft. Tarcíryan, Láminë (OC), Eärnil I, Tyelcatálië (OC), Círyandil, Netyariel (OC), Círyaher Hyarmendacil I, Ilwiel Rilyasicil (OC) Tarcíryan adding the Tar- to his birth name is headcanon, as is his position as Captain of the Hosts and the manner of his death. (I’ve also decided to add the accented í to all names that include the element cír, “ship,” as it appears in the name Círdan, just because I think it looks nice. The only one I missed was Tar-Círyatan, as I made that decision after his edit was posted.) Eärnil’s story is mostly canon, though the bit about his death being arranged by the lords of Umbar is headcanon. Umbar’s origins as a conquered city are strongly implied but not explicitly canon. Círyandil’s life is entirely canon. Círyaher’s story is mostly canon, though I gave some credit for his accomplishments to his wife, and a few details have been embellished. The bit about Celebrindor of Arnor is headcanon. And of course, all details about the OC wives are my own creation.

Atanatar II ft. Atanatar II Alcarin, Míriën (OC), Narmacil I, Calmacil We don’t know if Atanatar was an only child or not, I made that decision. Most of his story is canon, with a few embellishments. It’s not impossible that Narmacil was married, but he canonically had no children, so I decided to make him aroace. Narmacil’s worries about Minalcar overthrowing him are all headcanon, but the details of the war and alliance with Rhovanion are canon.

Calmacil ft. Calmacil, Aistárë (OC), Minalcar Rómendacil II, Calimehtar Calmacil’s story is mostly canon, though everything relating to his wife is headcanon.

Calimehtar ft. Calimehtar, Imbelossë (OC), Alquandilmë (OC), Serecco (OC), Castamir Everything here is headcanon, except that Calimehtar is canonically the ancestor of Castamir.

Rómendacil II ft. Minalcar Rómendacil II, Calamistë (OC), Valacar, Vidugavia, Vidumavi, Vinitharya Eldacar The basic details of this one are canon (Rómendacil’s regency, Valacar’s marriage, etc), but I’ve significantly messed with the timelines; canonically, Minalcar did not go himself to Rhovanion after his military victory, instead sending Valacar (who was already grown) alone, but I liked the idea of Valacar growing up in Rhovanion so I changed things to make that work. Also, fun fact: “Vinitharya” is not pronounced as Viniþarya, but rather as Vinit-harya.

Castamir ft. Castamir, Núriel (OC), Airesarno (OC), Ninquo (OC), Arnakhôr Angamaitë, Azgarzîr Sangahyando The influence of his mother upon Castamir is a headcanon, as is everything about his wife. It is canonical that Castamir had sons who survived the Kin-strife, though we don’t know their names. Ornendil was canonically executed when Osgiliath fell, but Castamir performing the execution himself is an embellishment. He was canonically ��haughty and ungenerous” as a king; I made up the bit about him specifically continuing executions and exiles, but it doesn’t feel like much of a stretch. We don’t know much about Castamir’s sons or their fate, but I feel that my extrapolations are based in canon. Angamaitë and Sangahyando’s Adûnaic names are my own creation, but the details of their schemes are canonical. We know they are both descended from Castamir, though not the specific details of their relationship to each other; I chose to make them grandsons of different sons of Castamir. We don’t know what their eventual fates were, but considering they would have lived during the Great Plague, I thought that was a fittingly ironic way for them to die.

Eldacar ft. Vinitharya Eldacar, Russariel (OC), Ornendil, Aldamir This is mostly canon, with all the headcanoned details having been covered in previous notes.

Aldamir ft. Aldamir, Lintasímë (OC), Vinyarion Hyarmendacil II, Mittanyar (OC), Minardil Look, sometimes ladies get to die in pointless duels, okay? I did make that up, though the rest of Aldamir’s life is canonical. I made Vinyarion trans because c’mon, a name like “new son”? He chose that when he came out. Also his spouse is nonbinary because why not! Enbies can be Captains of the Ships, too!!

Minardil ft. Minardil, Huilindië (OC), Telemnar, Súriel (OC), Fernendil (OC), Mityaher (OC), Cucuandië (OC), Minastan, Nenyawilin (OC), Tarondor of Gondor The circumstances of Minardil’s death are canon (and were covered earlier as well), though again everything about his wife is made up. Húrin of Emyn Arnen was indeed Minardil’s steward, and the stewards were chosen from his House after this, but the details about his role in these two succession crises are all headcanon. All we know about Telemnar in canon is that he started building a fleet to fight Umbar, but that when the Great Plague came he and “all his children” died, leaving his nephew Tarondor to inherit. Thus everything about his wife and daughter is all made up.

Tarondor of Gondor ft. Tarondor of Gondor, Varnefindë (OC), Telumehtar Umbardacil, Elenmirwë (OC), Narmacil II, Arcíryas Tarondor’s deeds as king are canon, as is the age of Telumehtar at the time of his inheritance, though we know nothing about the fate of his wife. Telumehtar’s deeds are likewise canon, though we don’t know the specifics about how the last descendants of Castamir were slain, just that they died in this battle.

Narmacil II ft. Narmacil II, Alassindo (OC), King Calimehtar, Nessimë (OC), Ondoher, Lúnaduinë (OC) Everything about Alassindo is headcanon, but Narmacil did canonically die fighting the Wainriders. Except for the details about his wife and his time governing Minas Anor before his inheritance, Calimehtar’s story is canon. We know nothing about Calimehtar’s daughter except that he had one.

Ondoher ft. Ondoher, Lelyariel (OC), Artamir, Prince Faramir, Fíriel, Arvedui, Lúnaduinë (OC), Quildoloro (OC), Minohtar Everything about the rivalry between Ondoher and Eärnil is headcanon. The alliance with Arnor is canon, though the details of the marriage of Arvedui and Fíriel being arranged by their mothers is headcanon. All the details about the battles are canon.

Arcíryas ft. Arcíryas, Moicanítë (OC), Calimmacil, Lótëaloxë (OC), Prince Siriondil, Vánquassë (OC), Eärnil II, Telpinë (OC), Eärnur, Morimmacil (OC) Save for their relations to one another, everything about Arcíryas, Calimmacil, and Siriondil is headcanon. The rivalry between this house and the Line of Kings is headcanon, but everything else about Eärnil and Eärnur is canon. Eärnur is arguably gay-coded, so I gave him a boyfriend, but that is not explicitly canonical.

1- The Gray Ghost had suffered some engine trouble somewhere on Interstate 65, so Mom and Dad hadn’t managed to make it to Chuck’s wedding. (Early Edition: ”Belly Up to the Bar”, a canon-compliant continuation of the episode “Occasionally Amber”, Gary/Toni except kinda not really because she’s totally pissed)

2- Oracle, Texas. 1878. A gnarled husk of a town still trying to deny that its glory days are past. (”Gunslinger”, my serious treatment/retelling of the Roger Corman western)

3- The gate clanged shut behind him, and Meng Yao took a deep, steadying breath. (MDZS: ”Leverage”, an Untamed AU based on inspired by pretty much continuing @littlesmartart​‘s brilliant setup and concept)

4- Many, many nights would Jiang Cheng lie awake at night, staring at the ceiling and pondering the razor’s edge of chance he’d toed. (MDZS: an Untamed chengqing fic set post-canon, current working title is “Second Chances” but I don’t like it)

5- Napoleon Solo flipped though an outdated magazine with little real interest as he lounged in one of the chairs lining the lobby of the car rental establishment. (TMFU (2015): ”Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, a fic set in my “Eight Strapping Daughters” universe where it is currently 1987 and Gaby and Illya have had eight daughters, any of whom are capable of taking over the world... and all of whom are about to spend the day at a shopping mall)

6- He felt the phone vibrating in his pocket. (Sailor Moon: ”Moon Revenge”, a Minako/Kunzite bodyguard AU)

7- The Moon was visiting Earth. (Sailor Moon: ”No Miracle for the Likes of Us”- another working title- which is Venus/Kunzite-centric exploration of the end of the Silver Millenium)

8- Chibi-Usa hasn’t stayed very long after Helios departed. (Sailor Moon: ”Rebirth AU”- you guessed it... working title- a Minako/Kunzite-heavy-but-not-exclusive AU that deviates from the manga/SM Crystal canon after the end of the Dead Moon Circus arc where the Shitennou are revived and the events of Star never occur)

9- Monday, 7:00 AM: Alarm goes off.

Monday, 7:00:08 AM: Alarm thrown across room. (Sailor Moon: “Codename: Teen Idol ‘Dite”, a side arc set in the above AU where, lacking any catastrophic galactic conflicts to fight against, Minako is going out of her mind with boredom and takes an undercover job as an idol as part of a police/Interpol sting operation)

10- Normally, Salazar Slytherin took great pride in his self-control. (Harry Potter: ”Release”, a short Hogwarts founders one-shot involving a maddening magical construction project and a sudden bout of swearing)

11- It was the first truly warm day since winter had broken, and Salazar Slytherin wandered the grounds with no purpose or destination in mind, simply basking in the sunlight until he began to feel the chill of the dungeons recede from his bones. (Harry Potter: ”And Treat Them All the Same”, a Hogwarts founders story about Helga Hufflepuff’s background and why she feels very strongly about equal treatment)

12- Salazar Slytherin stared at the wardrobe for another minute before finally deciding to throw another fur over his fur-lined cloak, leather jerkin, and wool tunic.  (Harry Potter: another one-shot Hogwarts founders fic with a teeny bit of Helgazar where the very cold-blooded Slytherin has to deal with a snowball fight, currently but not definitively titled “Snow Day”)

13- As the sun disappeared beneath the horizon, Brooklyn burst through the thin stone crust encasing him, his awakening roar shifting into a yawn as he stared blearily at the skyline and tried to remember what century he was in. (Gargoyles: ”Return of the Time Dancer”, Brooklyn’s return to New York- family in tow- after his Phoenix Gate adventures)

14- The couple breaking their fast that morning were strikingly handsome, if perhaps past the most fashionable age. (The Scarlet Pimpernel, Pride and Prejudice: “Scarlet Impressions”, a crossover fic that pretty much unfolded itself when I a) crunched numbers regarding the dates and years of respective storylines and b) realized that while Lizzy and Marguerite would get on like a house on fire, Darcy’s only possible reaction to Sir Percy would be unmitigated horror poorly repressed due to the latter’s much higher social standing)

15- Paris really was lovely this time of year. (MCU: “Threads and Patches: Part One”, first part of a three-part Clintasha AU set after the events of Civil War and most emphatically *not* farm-family friendly)

16- The briny air filled her lungs to bursting, but she continued to draw in breath until it hurt. (Highlander the Series: “The Mad Viking Saga”... because, frankly, EVERYONE should have an Immortal™ self-insert character and I refuse to apologize or feel ashamed of mine)

17- “Your Highness?  The oracle is here.” (Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas: “Sinbad and the Garden of the Hesperides” a sequel to the animated movie that actually should be titled “Proteus and the etc., etc.” bc it’s mostly about him and giving him the ending I think he deserves, a.k.a. an OC love interest and a chance for adventure while on a quest to save his city from a plague)

18- Bare feet pounded on the hot, rough pavement as Sinbad dashed around another tight corner. (Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas: “Fast Friends”, an eight-chapter prequel telling the story of how Sinbad and Proteus met and grew up together, wherein each chapter progresses with each year they know each other from when they meet to when Sinbad leaves)

19- Reed was well-known as your stereotypical absent-minded professor. (Fantastic Four: “Shut Up and Dance With Me”, a Reed/Sue fluffy one shot where Reed is adorable because fight me)

20- The spaceport on Aruus Minor reeked of fuel, welding torches, and sweaty coveralls, but it was a welcome change from the recycled air of the Lambda shuttle. (Star Wars Legends Expanded Universe (BITE ME DISNEY): “Everything Unsaid”, a Luke/Mara chance encounter set during the we-share-an-unbearable-degree-of-compatibility-to-say-nothing-of-the-overwhelming-sexual-tension-but-both-of-our-lives-are-kind-of-a-mess-and-neither-of-us-feels-ready-to-deal-with-our-feelings-for-each-other-so-we’ve-individually-decided-to-just-ignore-said-feelings-while-simultaneously-being-drawn-to-each-other-whenever-we’re-so-much-as-in-the-same-fucking-hemisphere years)

WHEW! Well, it sure was fun to tease all my followers with a taste of fics that will neverrr be finished! As far as patterns go, seems I tend to prefer either set-up paragraphs or punchy one-to-three-liners intended to trick intrigue people into reading further. My favorite is definitely #9. It’s a diary/log of Minako’s day, and her POV is hilarious and sooooo much fun to write like that!

Hi! I'm currently working on an OC, but I'm struggling on her Quirk. I want it to be something that people would consider creepy, weird, or unsettling. As of right now, the only ones I can think of are calcium/bone manipulation, a puppeteer quirk, or a quirk that'd allow her to turn inanimate objects into small, mindless monsters. Any thoughts/suggestions?

It sounds like you want an emitter type quirk? I think having an unsettling-LOOKING character would be easy with the right transformation or mutation type quirk, especially if you pull inspiration from classic horror films. (You know, disjointed anatomy, melting skin, hollow face, monster teeth, bug eyes, etc...)

If your character looks kind of normal, or maybe only slightly creepy, you can still take inspiration from horror movies to come up with a quirk. Reiko from 1-B is an excellent example of this! And, actually, with your mention of a bone-manipulation/puppeteer quirk (and technically if those quirks are used the right way they achieve the same effect), Shinsou also comes to mind as a slightly creepy-looking character with a very unsettling quirk, since his quirk is basically puppeteering too.

I think a lot of things humans consider “unsettling” or “weird” tend to be things that either make them feel helpless or out of control of their situation (like a ghost throwing things around when they’re haunting you and you can’t touch them because they’re intangible), or things that basically fall into the category of “uncanny valley”--things that don’t quite look like they fit in or belong. So it’s not so much the quirk itself that has to be creepy, just how you and your character plan to use it.

If your character isn’t meant to look creepy and you want a quirk that other characters’ first reaction to would be “oh crap that’s creepy” when they see it, I’m not 100% sure a manipulation quirk would really fit the bill considering how many of those we’ve already seen in canon which people react to more with a logical fear than a with the sense of a chill down their spine. Maybe a possession type quirk if done correctly can achieve the effect, whether it’s full on Danny Phantom style possession where one body sinks into another and occupy the same physical and mind space, or a more Joey Wilson style possession where it’s mostly a mental possession and it happens through eye contact or touch or some other similar means while leaving the original body behind somewhere.

You might be onto something with the “creating minions” thing though--if you plan to use “turn only inanimate objects”, it might not be creepy if it’s ANY inanimate object. You’d have to limit it by either saying the quirk can only use humanoid-body inanimate objects (like dolls/robots) or objects that can naturally move (ie, toy cars, not a vase or something), or the character prefers to use something which could be construed as unsettling (ie, porcelain dolls, ragdolls, beat-up plushies, jack-in-the-boxes, wind-up nutcrackers, clowns or something). The effect can definitely be boosted if turning the inanimate object animate changes its appearance slightly to be creepier (ie, it has a rotting appearance, or glowing body/eyes, or it’s given teeth or something).

Alternatively, instead of turning inanimate objects, you can just straight up have a “summon/create minor minions” quirk, where your character can make a certain shape (so you can choose to make it any type of monster you want, and whether you want it to be a consistent size/shape every time or if the shape will change based on what the character wants) out of a certain or limited material or even just any material available. In the “whatever shape/material” situation, you’d have a very powerful and adaptable quirk (ie, making dirt golems, sewage monsters similar to Trubbish from Pokemon, wooden beasts like the Timberwolves in My Little Pony, goblin-like creatures made up of bugs or slime, foaming goo monsters made of toothpaste and/or water or acid or other chemical solutions, etc.). If you make the minion/creature out of blood or hair, it can probably like a cross between Twice and Vlad--summon a vaguely human shape (for that uncanny valley unsettling feeling) made up of an organic material that is not only important to the human body but is both disturbing and gross when you consider why or how much is currently NOT IN/ON the body. (To up the disturbing/unsettling feeling, you don’t even have to limit it to the creator’s blood--using other people’s blood too would be just as horrifying.)

I dunno, I’m actually personally not great at scary things, so if these didn’t help I can only recommend watching some horror movies and figuring out what creepy thing might work for you with those. Maybe some of my followers might have some suggestions--anyone want to help out?

Director’s Cut 1: Andrew ‘Pope’ Cody

“I find it difficult to find any redeeming qualities in this character. He is a person with spot on DSM antisocial personality disorder, with sociopathic traits and without the charming facade. But the mental health professional in me also sees him as neurodiverse, on the spectrum. At any rate, I can’t find any allure or menacing sexuality in him. How did you find redeeming qualities within Pope? And how the heck did you come up with a female OC who can interpret his cues and find warmth and attraction from him? I enjoy your fics about him, others I’ve read have basically torture porn.”

Wow, okay, Andrew. You’ve picked a really interesting one here. So, lets start with some background... Which I will try to condense as much as possible.

Also, for ease of talking, I’m going to give our Reader back her OC name and therefore when I refer to ‘Elaiyna’ that’s your reader character! 😁 Background I was never meant to write for Andrew Cody from the movie. My first watch of the movie left me cold and, to be honest I still find it very difficult to watch even now. (The movie is great for sure, but it’s not one I rewatch often.) Without a long explanation as to ‘why’, I watched the movie so that I could watch the US TV show version of Animal Kingdom. Which I highly recommend!

Where as Movie!Andrew I couldn’t get into at all, Show!Andrew I fell in love with. It took me one episode to come up with my OC and a decent story line.  Although I never actually wrote it out I had many plot points saved on a document for how Andrew/Elaiyna’s relationship would play out. So really, you have Shawn Hatosy to thank-! 

Who, super side note, deserves an Emmy for this. And also can someone please get him and Ben in an interview to talk about Andrew - I will beg! 

When I decided to start writing and posting for Andrew here (considering I had the plot points and we were taking the Mendos as far as we could) - I essentially wrote a mix of Show!Andrew and Movie!Andrew. Honestly tipped in favour of the show. But very recently I’ve tried to write much more for Movie!Andrew as I’m 99.9% sure that’s who everyone reading my work is reading for anyway!

How did you find redeeming qualities within Pope? 

The only real answer is Show!Andrew. I love him so much, and they explore a lot with his character - as they of course have time to, that a 1hr30 movie doesn’t - so it’s very easy to find redeeming qualities in a character that’s at a very different stage to his movie counterpart (and yet is still the same character and recognisable as the same character... Show!Andrew is the build up to the man we get in the movie, if you will.). Show!Andrew has that same... creepy/awkward vibe, but also has a lot of sweet, decent human being moments that give you his more redeeming qualities (without spoiling anything major his relationship with Lena, Baz’s daughter, is a good example). 

But also I view Andrew in the movie very differently to the way that I believe most people do. Movie Andrew doesn’t scare me. Sure, he does scary things, but to me he just comes across as very awkward. Like, he knows what a situation calls for and kinda adapts to that - or he says things because he’s like “That’s what people say in this situation right?” at least that’s how I interpret him. No matter how incorrect that is.  Like there’s no social queues in his character, he doesn’t really fit into those kinds of situations (or function well!) but he observes everything. So he knows that “If X happens, say/do Y. Because that’s what people do.” regardless of his own “feelings” etc. I don’t think he has emotional intelligence and there’s a definite disconnect between think and feel and... I guess instinct? That ‘primal brain’ thing. 

I mean I know it’s interpretation but that scene where he carries Nicky to bed and then like strokes her hair back and then tells Jay “She’s beautiful.” Doesn’t give me any other vibe other than Andrew having observed this and his brain going ‘Oh, yeah, Andrew - then compliment her to her boyfriend. That’s a thing people do.’ Just the way my brain works I guess.

The obvious follow up question would be “Okay, so you love him in the show. But you write for him in the movie. So... you gotta have something redeeming there right? Now you’re leaving Show!Andrew on a shelf? Correct - I kinda feel like Andrew has at least some ‘relationships’ to which he actually feels something. Which is why I’m reluctant to place the “Psychopath” tag on him. Look at his relationship with Baz for instance (honestly, that supermarket scene is my very favourite.) - I just get this “friends” vibe. Like real friends, maybe even best friends. Andrew cares enough about him to want vengeance (I’m not down for thinking this is just him wanting to be a criminal I genuinely think this is a reaction to losing his best friend - and arguably his stability.) And I mean, he cares about his family. Even if not in the traditional ‘sense’ of caring. 

I also want to give a quick shout out to @mandy23b​​ - as Andrew is her favourite, and conversations with her on how she views him really help me shape Andrew in my head. For example she has a lot of headcanons about how he grew up (eg: potential physical abuse) that I am happy to adopt. So, my own personal headcanons / adopted head canons about him also help to make him redeemable. 

And how the heck did you come up with a female OC who can interpret his cues and find warmth and attraction from him? 

Oh my gosh, Elaiyna. Okay, well aside from again her starting with Show!Andrew and me basically lifting their entire relationship and giving it to Movie!Andrew there’s a lot about her that I guess ‘prepares’ her for him.

First - they meet because the Cody’s case her car (...Ready For It?), assume she has a lot of money and try to rob her. She knows who he is before they form a relationship - the barrier of “oh by the way I’m a career criminal” is broken instantly.  Second - Although she’s an only child her parents have fostered a lot of children over the years (More details in ‘Flaws’) and so she’s used to a lot of siblings and the bonds between siblings. Added to this it’s not hard to imagine that some of these foster children might have had neurodivergancies of their own and therefore she’s also used to people that act like Andrew does. Third - David ( ‘Flaws’ and ‘Last Habit’) her eldest foster sibling is a Police officer, and they have a close relationship. Figure she could learn a lot from him. Both on crime/criminals and then maybe neurodivergant criminals too. He’s bound to have at least some stories that might help her. Fourth - Not to make some kind of robot comparison for our Boi here but, she works in IT. She’s the CIO for her firm. Draw your own conclusions on relationships with something/one with basically zero emotional output.

I find your comments on other fics you’ve read very interesting. Because to me Andrew just isn’t sexual. (I might be in the minority, because other fic writers I’ve talked to tend to put him in ‘physical only’ / highly sexually charged relationships) He’s never read that way to me. ‘4 In the Morning’ is the first time I’ve thought to write something that is sexy for him. Although I have alluded to sexual elements of their relationship in other fics.  Their relationship to me has always been on a quiet understanding level. He observes and learns about her and is fairly quiet about it. Elaiyna is more extroverted, but also observes and learns about him very quickly. So instead of PDA and verbal “I love you’s” they have this non-verbal communication that isn’t always physical either. Although touch sometimes plays into it.  Because that just the kind of relationship that I see him in - sex is rare, and when it happens it’s not because of this big “I love you” romantic build up - it’s spontaneous. That part of his primal brain is kicked in and it’s like “Okay. We’re doing this now.” For his character I understand the “draw” to write something like that (even though, like I say, I don’t see him being interested.) but I’m just very much a romantic... 😅 So I want to write something Romantic even for a Mendo who you wouldn’t necessarily fit into a romantic role. Their story still has “romantic” tenancies. Like it’s a loving relationship it’s just a different kind of love. I don’t feel like he would necessarily know that he loves her, or even comprehend what ‘love’ is. But he knows he feels something for her that’s very different to how he feels about other people. Which is why when Elaiyna does say ‘I love you’ it’s not reciprocated with words - and rarely with actions. She knows he loves her, even if he doesn’t know it. Their relationship is very ‘quiet’ but she knows that’s just how he is - and he will show “affection” as he deems fit and appropriate to show it. Even if - again - it’s not a “typical” way of showing it. And when he wants affection himself it’s more, “I am hugging you now on MY terms. But in 5 seconds I will walk away as if nothing happened.” He is more often enough the one to initiate anything PDA and Elaiyna will wait for him to come to her. If her read on him is *just* right then she’ll initiate, but then there’s the consequences of getting it wrong and Andrew pushing her away... I definitely base a lot of the beginning of their relationship on them just finding each other fascinating. He’s completely different to any other man she’s ever met, and he’s never met someone so interested in him that doesn’t try to change him and/or however he treats her is met more with understanding than conflict. 

I say I love all my OCs, of course I do. But Elaiyna is one I really had to think about building because of Andrew’s own personality. It had to make sense for her to be with someone like him - their relationship had to make sense and keep him (mostly) in character. So she needed to be able to interpret his cues, as you so nicely put it 😊 But I think I gave her the right tools to do this, and, with Show!Andrew she got the right base to jump from.

Is your character popular in the fandom? YES / NO. [she is one of the deuteragonists; has been around since the pilot & while she has been sidelined during the epilogue, she was usually at least around with her story arc / actions having a huge impact on the overall story as such.]

Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. [I guess so? Then again, that’s an objective statement so I am just? Assuming? I personally find her general aesthetics to be quite amazing; she is a dance battler, graceful & elegant; a ballerina with a classical theme that runs through her design & attitude like a red threat. I have a weak spot for stuff like that.]

Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. [surprisingly, Pearl is considered to be the strongest non-fusion Crystal Gem according to the show (until Lapis Lazuli comes around). -- I assume prowess wise Pearl is high up next to Garnet & Rose whenever she can actually get her crap together due to having fought countless battles &, most importantly, survived the war in which she fought & shattered opponents thrice her size.]

Are they underrated?  YES / NO / IDK. [partially yes, partially no. She is controversial for sure but just as popular. At some point, the show delved deeper into her issues & actually had her mess up quite severely; the fandom’s reaction was so harsh that the showrunners had to interfere by “apologizing for making her human”. Pearl has always been a target for extreme criticism; some of it justified, some just straight down ridiculous.  -- It’s easy to forget what kind of complexity a character can offer when her resolution arc happens literally ten episodes before the show ends.]

Were they relevant for the main story?  YES / NO.

Were they relevant for the main character?  YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG. [Pearl becomes Steven’s guardian / mentor after the death of his mother Rose Quartz & can later be considered his stand-in mother alongside Garnet. It is safe to say that her actions have influenced Steven the most, both negatively & positively.]

Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO. [she earned herself the title ‘The Renegade’ during the war for being the first (& arguably only) pearl that broke out of her conditioning; she used to be a wanted criminal / traitor to her own kind for 5000 + years until her record was cleared upon the beginning of Era 3 (aka official end of the Gem War). She is still being referred to as ‘The Renegade’ now & then; while she used to be proud of the title she has grown to resent it a lot these days.]

How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL. [it depends on who you ask; Homeworld Soldiers? Well, they despise her; she is a defective Gem & a war criminal. She stands for all that is wrong with the rebellion; I mean a pearl who refuses to serve & calls herself an individual? a warrior? THE SCANDAL!! Some soldiers are afraid of her, call her ‘Rose Quartz’ terrifying renegade’, even. However, in her ranks aka the rebellion, she is being seen as a silent heroine. A celebrated war hero, Rose Quartz’s right hand & sole confidante (some even whisper that there is more between them).]

How strictly do you follow canon?  — uh... well. Not really but... kinda? Steven Universe’s canon is messy & occasionally QUITE inconsistent. -- while it gives you vague details, some lore can best be compared to a gaping void. Thus my reason for partial divergence isn’t lack of good character writing (because Pearl is very, very complex even on screen), but rather inconvenient lore holes & SU’s habit of leaving important facts uncommented, “unshown” or just stuck between the lines. While I don’t mind deep analysis, some of those “buried facts” fly other people’s heads which leads to terrible, terrible fanon takes. -- in order to distance myself from that, I usually take canon & expand it with my own headcanons & metas based on lore / show analysis. I often alter / cut what does not fit my narrative BUT I always root my stuff in actual canon occurrences.

     Sometimes, I just straight down change certain things that canon messed up in my pov. For example, in order to make it explicitly clear that she fell in love & rebelled on her own volition (even if it has been confirmed like ten times by now), my Pearl is around 1500 years older than the original & (in)directly served White Diamond before being handed to Pink (not the only reason for that change but well I will elude on it eventually). She was a default pearl with no customization & usually spent most of her time with organizing matters in the palace until Pink accidentally broke her customized pearl; Pearl was then 'poofed’ & handed over; she possessed a more sensible personality & a strict rule protocol that was supposed to help her “raise” Pink Diamond into the ranks of a ruler. Most other changes are rather minor but very important or essential to my portrayal (for example whenever “A Single Pale Rose” is concerned: Pearl suggesting the “sealing of the secret”, her not wearing the dress from the beginning, her not calling Pink “my diamond”, her arguing with Pink long before the fake-shattering took place, etc etc.); the epilogue series is another can of worms I will get to eventually but lemme just say I didn’t really like the way Pearl behaved / the plot-bound ooc-ness she sometimes yielded to & other stuff. 

SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  well, she is a lesbian space rock from a strange universe; whose body is basically a manifestation of light? She is probably the most passionate being you will ever meet. -- if you are looking for a speedrun through human history, she is your gal. If you need someone to beat up some bullies, she will gladly come & smack sense into people; if you want to learn everything about Gemkind, sit down & listen because she won’t stop talking any time soon. 

     By definition, Pearl is a good person; the extreme loyal kind, absolutely & helplessly dedicated to a cause. She wears most of her emotions on her sleeve, comes off as genuinely caring, protective & trustworthy. She is empathetic & observant, she will always be there for you in one way or another. She is smart, loves to read & indulges in the higher arts such as (romantic) poetry, singing, painting, music (violin, piano, bass) & dance (predominately classic ballet / waltz but she has grown rather fond of jazz lately). Her knowledge about Earth & all that lays beyond is vast & if you ever want to see whatever is out there, she is the type to take you on a space tour with no questions asked. She fences, has learned to wield a lance, can engineer very well, has a very peculiar but... sorta adorable kind of humour that can either be hella obnoxious or super funny. There is no in-between. Pearl loves science, baking, housekeeping, ice-& roller-skating & is more than willing to take people along whenever she visits the rink. If you ask her for advice, she will gladly give it; if you need help, she will be the first to raise her hand. Pearl is orderly, has a strong sense of justice & a fierce, dedicated kind of resolve. 

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —  Pearl. Is. A. Mess. No questions asked. She is an introverted, nervous, neurotic, grief-- & trauma riddled mess who loves to pretend & rationalize things to death. Her self-esteem is abysmal, she is extremely jealous, obsessive & possessive [to the point where she straight up murdered men just because they dared to be around her girlfriend]. Her mind is a compartmentalized mess of repressed memories & heavy, untreated cptsd woven into it; Pearl lives too much inside her head & gets overwhelmed by her emotions far too easily; she feels too much all at once & lets her temper get the best of her. 

     She is self-centred, does not seem to understand that words & reckless actions hurt people, believes that only she deserves to grieve Rose & willingly destroyed relationships just to soak in her own misery; self-destruction is her forte & she will indulge in it no matter the consequences. She is often high-strung, judgemental, always has to be right, overachieves & overdoes whenever a chance is given. -- she can be petty, arrogant & desperate for validation. --  Needless to say, Pearl is the kind of person that pretends to be fine for years but once she cracks she reveals that she is anything but. -- she cannot move on, hates men, & just is a lot to deal with. Getting in touch with her means you run the risk to get dragged into her mess, whenever you want it or not. 

What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  first & foremost, my love for complex, purpose-driven female characters. I am a sucker for the “introvert, plagued lady” type & once parts of Pearl’s past were revealed during Season 1 I was sold. Pearl seemed relatable to me, extremely human & raw in her behaviour. While I love most of the SU cast equally, Pearl just wouldn’t let me go. Her aesthetic is amazing, her past intriguing. -- her connection to ballet & classical music, her elegant & graceful design just spoke to me. 

What keeps your inspiration going?  —  music. music. oh, and music. Poetry, long walks (I am not kidding), analysis, meta & hc writing, discussions with writing partners or my rl partner @rosiqe.

Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO / I SINCERELY HOPE I DO? [ despite my emo peculiar take on the character, I do hope that people hear her voice whenever they read my replies. ]

Do you frequently write headcanons?  YES / NO / SORT OF? [ I wish I could post more but I am very, very slow & a perfectionist at heart. -- I try to compensate for my lack of actual hcs by rambling in my tags. Most part of the time said ramblings include personal headcanons or analyses of specific scenes that include personal takes on pivotal situations; while I gather & write them down eventually, it can take me a long time to get stuff done. -- it is easier for me to jus blabber on & on in the tags. ]

While I love my headcanons & have gotten quite proud of my writing over time, I constantly doubt myself regarding the “ic”-ness of my responses. I like to believe that I am doing rather well, but I am not confident, no. ]

Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  —  Well, yes. As long as it is the constructive kind. I love receiving feedback, may it be negative or positive. I will most likely try to discuss criticism with you; aka if you (i.e) tell me that Pearl shouldn’t have (C)PTSD, I will deliver canon proof & state my reasoning for my decision to implement it in my canon, etc. What I will not do is tolerate character hate or unreasonable hate towards my writing. If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  sure. As stated above, I will probably discuss stuff with you. The chance of me dropping a headcanon however are rather low.

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  —  Hm... it depends on what they don’t like. If it’s my writing, well, why are you following me to begin with?? If it is my take on things... well again, why are you following me? I stated in my rules what you should expect & that I will not water down specific aspects of a complex character. Disliking my portrayal is fine since I know that my kind of writing / analysis isn’t necessarily everyone’s tea but... again, why would you keep following me?

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  —  um. Not... well? While I will never excuse my muse’s actions, I dislike groundless bashing. In regard to Pearl... well. As stated above, I expected backlash the second I created this blog. Pearl is one of those characters the fandom either loves or hates; her canon relationship to Rose was branded toxic by a ton of people, people call her uncaring, salty, insane & straight up manic, she seemingly has no redeeming qualities, she is a bitch, too perfect (LOL) or arrogant & apparently has no character? I love it when people say stuff like that because... did we watch the same show? Is there a version of SU I don’t know? Please tell me, I wanna see it for myself! Some hot takes in this fandom are atrocious & make me want to commit a crime. 

     -- but I digress. I have spent too much time in her tag in 2014 + & I have seen quite the fights over the most ridiculous things; Pearl, in particular, got quite the flack for stuff that eventually got resolved in season 5 [which, again, was way too late but well]. In the end, clowns will be clowns, no matter what you do. I just don’t get why you would follow someone if you hate their character to begin with.

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  —  yes, but please don’t be rude about it. I am German, English is my second language. I am currently learning Swedish / improving my Swedish so mistakes can always happen. Additionally, I am someone who posts her replies in the middle of the night & while I proofread a lot & most likely fix posts after I posted ‘em, some mistakes can still slip through. 

Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   —  ... I like to believe I am but I know that I am overly passionate & I can come off as too strong or too fierce sometimes. I can be too much, I can be too excentric (I’m a Scorpio, Karen); I have strong opinions in regard to my characters & I will not hold them back. I criticise shows mercilessly & I will plough through canon as much as I please. Stans & I usually don’t get along. HOWEVER, I am a meme. I love lame jokes, I am awkward, & sometimes very, very insecure. In the end,  I just wanna talk about my favourite characters & develop sth wonderful. Give me your thoughts on uuuh Jake

okay. gonna word dump this, and probably other interpretation asks, so I can get the words out there.

from my POV, there’s 3 types of canon Jake + 1 fanon vers + my personal interpretation. lemme explain what they are;

Book Jake, who I don’t have enough experience with bc I STILL haven’t finished the book… >_>;

2River Jake, who is kinda oblivious and very in-the-moment impulsive (not so bad he’s jumping place to place ADHD like Rich, but like, not considering that maybe dropping everything to seduce Madeline or Christine is a bad idea when he clearly really likes Chloe). these are debatably survival mechanisms bc of his family (and wealth, if you want to go into the “being rich actually traumatizes you and locks you into dissociation” theory–but to be fair, this is partially reliant on thinking Jake is Genuinely Rich. … well, not Rich as in… yeah); ignoring any pain he feels in favor of getting dicked down and forgetting about everything for a while. very “I’m not sad, I’m busy!!!!!” 

Bway (possibly the new canon general for all Jakes since it sounds like London’s is modeled after him but just… toned down), who is still oblivious, but towards other people’s emotions instead of himself; he’s manipulative, a little impulsive but a lot more malicious about it, and he knows exactly how hurt he is about his parents. this jake’s awareness of himself makes him act worse because he knows this is the only thing that seems to help and it’s basically the only thing he actually has control of. his wealthiness is undeniably present and Bad here because the reason taking what he wants and not caring that it hurts people is his main coping skill is pretty much only because he’s been allowed that privilege all his life. i tend to think this version of him should be done by a white cishet dude (despite jake’s actor on bway being genuinely FANTASTIC) bc being marginalized in a high school should’ve curved a lot of the “endless power and privilege” he gets for being rich (Not That One). 

[i… think this jake has ‘better’/more nuanced writing in BWay… but i don’t think it fits the musical nor is it the overall direction i think it should’ve gone. BMC feels best to me when there’s a heavier element of Dark Humor that briefly nods to a Larger and more Fucked Up world behind the bit we see in the musical. making it largely a twisted comedy, maybe even ramping that up further with more whiplash lines like jake’s “which means the house is empty, so that’s fun”]

Fanon Jake is… like most of the fanon characters in BMC, a bit… “bipolar” (like, radically shifting depending on the situation). the BMC fandom has been born with heavy engagement from minors in the current fascist climate of fandom as a whole. as a result, you have three general uses of jake that as “approved of” by somehow the exact same people despite being conflicting in a lot of ways. THIS IS NOT ME SHITTING ON FANON, i actually think most of this fandom is just a casual romp for most people and that shouldn’t be snatched away from them nor mocked nor treated like you HAVE to be logically consistent when this is just a fun hobby for most… but there are still trends i notice:

1: Jake the sweet bi disaster who loves their significant other and is just a little bit hopeless in their silliness and Down For Whatever-esque personality. this is often used for shippy pictures and memes and cute little oneshots, plus, of course, fluff.

2: Jake the tragic abuse victim who is extremely sad and has to learn to love again and has always been selfless, plus or minus a permanent disability post-fire. this is of course used for hurt/comfort, plus in combination kinda with michael in the bathroom-esque posts and tragic art, often also used as an example of the squip being the worst for jeremy or rich guilt trauma. also: aesthetic and moodboard posts.

3: the one I have the least good will towards: Jake the “why does everybody woobify mlm? You can’t portray him without flaws! queer boys aren’t your fetish!!!” with an attached, clunkily written reasons why he was an asshole that is also simultaneously watered down so you don’t think he’s a Monster bc then you’d be vilifying queer men (well, more like they’d feel bad about their cutesy-er ‘emotional support’ art and writing which is Totally Different from all the other cutesy emotional support art and writing). 

basically, Meta Trying To Make Jake Reasonably Flawed But Not Evil in this fandom is RARELY genuine–it’s more often than not moralistic hand-wringing made so that they can wash themselves of the guilt for actually enjoying something with a character they portray as mlm, or otherwise the guilt of enjoying anything romantic or sexual involving men or queer people period when we’re apparently not supposed to do that anymore, as decreed by the radfems infesting our spaces. 

and, well, or you’re an mlm writing this post, you’re probably young and still feeling extremely sensitive and scared about your identity. i once saw a very wise post by a trans person who had been trans for a long time, who said that when you first come out as trans (or queer in general, but especially trans people who are beginning social or physical transition and coming to terms with themselves) you are obvs on High Fucking Alert and so you’re insecure and scared of anything, ranging from “obvious transphobia” to “just trans people enjoying themselves and exploring transphobia in fiction or else their own sexuality”. again, this can relate to a lot of identities tbh, and as such young mlm either cis or trans can get very Itchy about people enjoying mlm content.

anyway.

wrapping it back around to me: i edit jake on a case by case basis (sometimes i even make him eviler or meaner based on what’s set up during Bway, he’s just not my usual go-to villain), but i tend to think of him as a tragic Mr. Peanutbutter-y sweetheart who kinda knows he feels like shit yet also knows that if he stops to assess it, it would make his life a lot harder in a time where he can’t afford that. his relationship with chloe is extremely toxic (chloe abuses him horribly, specifically), and so he tries to claw his way out of it only to be continually back in by chloe and her bullshit. 

this is why he doesn’t really get... well. he genuinely thought the thing with christine was going to be permanent; he wasn’t jerking her around, he thought he was over chloe and wanted a girl as cool and fun and genuinely nice as her. afterward he Gets It, and so feels Really Bad--at a time where he doesn’t have his house, his legs are broken (i don’t tend to put him in a perma-wheelchair), his parents have abandoned him, and he best friend is in the hospital. guilt crashes in on him from all sides, and he just has to... pretend it isn’t, even as he can no longer stop himself from thinking about it.

if i was to do a jake focused story, it’d probably be a dating sim where you play as him and watch his life change in conjunction with his attempts to find happiness again; you can either choose decisions that help him greatly or ruin his life so ver much... hmm. lets file that under hashtag “story ideas i’ll never use even though they could be great”

to wrap this up: i like jake. i don’t... really enjoy most of the written content (fanfic, meta, sometimes even the storylines on ask blogs) in this fandom about him or... really, most of the characters, which i feel bad about--i’d enjoy it more if it was every in conjunction with my usual Wants in a fic, which is, like. extreme angst.

BUT

i do still like jake, and i can super enjoy his portrayal in memes and visual art

he’s just not my total fave, but like, the reason he tends not to come up a lot in my content is more what i’m focusing on and why. i’d be happy to use him in stories if his presence fit.

as a bonus

here’s the ships i’m happy to use him for, generally: deere, michael/jake, brooke/jake, toxic chloe/jake, and of course, different ocs/jake

his identities/labels: cis, bisexual/romantic... tho sometimes i actually go for bisexual and aromantic! outside bway and eviler jakes, i’m good with him being any race, and even then it’s just a matter of suspending disbelief re: privilege theory. also, PTSD probably, and maybe generalized anxiety as a result. maaaaaybe autistic too? adhd would be a hard sell for me since he seems super put together in a way that’d be extremely difficult for every form of adhd, but i can see him being neurodivergent on the spectrum + like dyslexia maybe. oh, and i sorta-kinda think he may be color blind? but really i’d drop that at a moment’s notice if it’d be easier to write him without it lol.

his interests: one is more or less sports in general, tho i think that, unless he went straight for track or swimming or something Olympics (which he probably can’t do now...), that’s a high school or some college only focus for him. so, besides sports, i think he’d kinda like the satisfaction and steady growth of Collecting Rare Things That You Have To Look For, like cool rocks, bugs, etc. 

as for careers... some form of doctor something, maybe a businessman of some sort but he’d likely try to curve his power in that field as much as possible; he inherits his parents' assets and company or whatever, but he probably takes a backseat to that and only really has it out of a sense of ‘it’s my job as my parent’s kid to keep the company going--without engaging in the same awful legal issues they did--for as long as i can’. one of my fave jake-is-there stories, vanceypant’s spicy bis-focused fic 1999, has him owning a restaurant, and that was cool as hell.

also jake loves dogs. especially golden retrievers. yes.

(Also, not all of these backstories/OC canon’s are set in stone, and i’m still doing research on their respective characterizations/lifestyles/ect. they’re still in the editing/drafting process, but these are the basics of some of my older OC’s that you may know… and some of my NEW Oc’s that you may NOT know…. Yet, Mwhahaha!)

Regine: Eldest abandoned & disowned daughter of the RED Spy. Born in Marseilles, France, Parisian-raised until five years of age. Vanished suddenly for nearly a decade, resurfaced in Japan as an assassin prodigy at fifteen. Is totally not soft on her half-siblings, but is totally soft on her half-siblings. Cool, regal and calculated, plans to have the world in the palm of her hand before she hits 30. Long-time girlfriend of Matthias, identifies as pan. Has lost her temper one (1) time in her lifetime, immediately went to reapply lipstick afterwards like nothing happened. Definitely has night-terrors about her childhood, doesn’t discuss them with Matthias, and absolutely takes those nightmares to the grave.

Matthias: Unauthorized clone of the RED Medic, is physically near-identical to him with only minor changes and a stark age-reduction. Has considered bleaching/dying his hair to look more different than his predecessor. Expert in human biology and chemistry, experimented with his own blood cells so to transform them into a more… internal version of the components of the Medi-Gun, so as not to carry around clunky equipment. Is the low-key tired dad of the group. Probably designate roadtrips with the squad and immediately regrets it. Romantic-dork for his girl,  Best Supporting Boyfriend 197X.

Emma: Daughter of Ex-MannCo employee, Julia V. Henry and [REDACTED]. Legal goddaughter of Dell Congher. Child-genius, though deep-seated anger issues since childhood, potentially as a behavior coping tragedy. Built her first plane with her bare hands at twelve, can dismantle and rebuild a shotgun in exactly 63 seconds. Doesn’t wear helmets on motorcycle. Feels happiest flying in the air, alone. Absolutely, 100% adores kids, and will never admit it. Can’t go more than a minute without cursing. Also, though not information she shares immediately, she’s an elder twin. And she doesn’t like talking about it, so it’s best not to push her luck on the details.

Lui: Ultimate flower/pastel lesbian. Fluent in Japanese and English, though prefers her mother’s language, Hawaiian. Brings snacks to battle, often rehearses her battle catchphrases the night before. Makes friends with every animal she meets, owns a duck named Bartholomew. Reads teen fashion magazines, draws hearts around models she crushes on. Almost everything she owns has pink, no matter what shade, including her rocket launcher. Shares Emma’s love of the sky, is basically Emma’s favorite person. Infectious genuine smile, and will sing along to every new bop on the radio.

Tamela: The eldest out of the entire group, born in Nigeria, doesn’t know her parents. Considers her squad her family, Emma and Lui are her baby sisters, who can MORE than handle themselves but she still worries. Was gifted with abilities of fire-manipulation/telekinesis and heat resistance at a young age. Entire body, from knuckles to toes, is covered in jet-black flame tattoos. Demisexual, has not been in a romantic relationship as of yet, likely to change. Improvo leader, often first into battle and last to leave. Looks imposing and intense at first glance, is actually very warm (haha) and friendly personality-wise, but has a serious streak from having to grow up quickly.

Denny: Mute from birth, youngest of the group. Has never missed a shot in his life, expert target-shooter and excellent sniping protege. Definitely idolizes Annie Oakley, dressed up as her one year for Halloween.  Often corrects Emma’s sign-language, but appreciates her efforts. Like Tamela, see’s the group as his family, sticking together through thick and thin. Likes to hike, but also enjoys reading, keeping a raggy, decades-old copy of Sherlock Holmes in his knapsack, right next to his additional ammo.

Ricardo: Born Rosetta, the youngest of a fairly well-off hotel-chain family business throughout Tijuana, Mexico. Was often the forgotten one and left to his own devices, so he practiced running, dreaming of being an Olympic runner. Became Ricardo at 15, traveled to the US a year later. A bit boastful and chatty, though is often last to get a joke. Had a crush on Lui for sometime, before reconnecting with an old schoolmate, Maria, who he plans to move back to Mexico with after his job is done. Hasn’t given up on the dreams of the Olympics, often wakes up long before the sun rises to run laps around.

Sigríður Anja Dis Jóhannsson, or just Sig: Operational MannCo. Shipment Specialist Expert, has been on the payroll for only the last decade, but has become invaluable with the knowledge she has. Born in Iceland, has traveled the world on specialized shipment and cargo missions, even in more dangerous missions and item-requests. Has had to play poker for her own life, more than once. Single and childless, though she took care of her half-sisters children when she died suddenly, her niece and nephews now all grown up and located elsewhere. Sig is happy to travel alone on the open seas, though she’s had more than a fair amount of lovers around the world, men and women alike. Looks forward to retirement, hopefully with someone more long-term whose also ready to lean back, put away the balisong and let the kids take care of the damn gravel pit…

Jonathan Marks: Born Jane to wealthy stockbroker located in Manhattan, Jonathan is the promising CEO of Marks Enterprises, an international trading and environmental-studies. As the youngest CEO of his company, he’s expressing interest to making big changes, including looking into MannCo, hoping to form a co-ownership or eventually takeover, mostly for the sake of his own company, but the fact that MannCo seems to have a few secrets in the closet that seem suspicious… Jonathan knows Regine from childhood, as they both attended the same private school in Japan, prior to Jonathan’s transition. Very book-smart, often tries to lead by example, he’s persistent with getting a meeting with representatives of MannCo, growing more suspicious as time goes on with dodged replies, forcing him to contact a current employee for an opportunity of a private tour of their facilities, one Miss. Binyamin-M’laney

Angelita de los Reyes: Second-generation of Cuban immigrants, Angelita was considered one of the kindest, sweetest people while in school in New Jersey, unfortunately, her studies were often halted as she suffers from CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) leaving her exhausted before noon often times, though she managed to graduate with a specialty in painting. Though she turned mostly house-ridden after high school, she honestly enjoys spending her day painting and creating art to decorate the family-restaurant downstairs, and also sending her artwork to commissioners all over the state. It also gives her time to send plenty of letters to one of her oldest and closest friends from high-school. He was VERY much higher than her in energy, and could literally run blocks in minutes, but they practically grew up together, at least until he moved to New Mexico for work… Though, strangely enough, Angelita doesn’t get much information about Eric’s company Builders League United, even though he has a whole CONTRACT with them… Hm. How odd.

Sarai Binyamin-M’laney: Born in Tel Aviv as a Mizrahi Jewish woman, her parents sent her to vacation in California when she was six, in which they died suddenly, leaving her overseas with her relatives in Cambria, California. Book-smart and a lover of the beach and surfing, Sarai was popular throughout her younger years, especially with the ladies. Though she identified as bisexual, it wasn’t until she graduated college with a degree in human relations and psychology that she had her first, though admittedly short-lived relationship with an unnamed man in Vegas, returning to Cambria shortly after and finding out she was pregnant. A year later, Sarai suddenly expressed interest in the minute human-resources division in MannCo, relocating to New Mexico shortly after her employment. Quiet, smart and with a very private personal life, she was a perfect, though secretive employee, with a bit of a soft-heart, as seen with how concerned she is for her ‘niece’ and ‘nephew’ back in Cambria, and how quickly she snuck in Mr Marks into the private industries. Her personality, perhaps, is meant to be a more opposing to that of the father of her two children in Cambria. After all, though she lives mere miles from his work location, Sarai has yet to bring herself to walk over and face the red-suited mercenary over in the RED base, whom she still can’t help but remember from their time together in Vegas.

Character Question Tag

Given that this was something I did on my awilliamswrites blog I don’t feel comfortable tagging people again to pass it on, but I will say thank you again to @pens-swords-stuff for tagging me!

Rules: Answer the following questions for one of your characters and then tag others to answer the same questions for their OCs.

I’ll do my latest OC, who is Llewellyn from my WIP The Rebel King.

1.     What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

Intelligence and manipulation. I knew I wanted him to be able to talk himself out of any situation and maneuver himself into the most advantageous positions and look awesome doing it.

2. Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

Not from their universe, no. However, I’d re-read The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner recently at the time I created him and I was definitely inspired by Eugenides. I wish I could write someone as cool as him, but I knew I wanted to do something a bit different too. (Because plagiarism is bad and if Llewelyn weren’t original in some way then why write him?)

3. How did you choose their name?

I like to do genealogy and I have Irish and Welsh ancestry. I’ve always wanted to use an ancestor’s name in a book and I liked the sound of that name so that’s what I chose.

4. In developing their backstory, what elements of the world that they live in played the most influential parts?

Hmm, the history of his family and the gods and goddesses. (Genealogy y’all, it’s my thing. Well, plus writing.) Llewelyn is a prince because about 10 or so generations back his ancestors invaded the country he’s now a part of and became their ruling class. However, they also got rid of the local religion (minor spoilers, some of this is revealed in chapter 2) which angered one of the goddesses pretty badly and she cursed his family. His family’s rule has never been peaceful and prosperous (it might be one or the other, but never both) and by the time Llewelyn is alive the country relies pretty heavily on a neighboring empire for food, protection, etc. So he is a prince of a poor country that never seems to have good luck and knows it, which has made him grow up both ambitious and wary.

5. Is there any significance behind their hair color?

No.

6. Is there any significance behind their eye color?

Again, no.

7. Is there any significance behind their height?

Sort of. In the first chapter he’s shorter than he used to be. (read and find out).

8. What, if anything, do you relate to within their character/story?

He’s quite analytical, and I am too.

9. Are they based off of you in some way?

A little bit, yeah. This is my first time writing a male character. Usually I write female characters who are based off of me, but with Llewelyn he isn’t nearly as much. The only thing that I’ve consciously decided was that since I have no idea how a guy thinks, I’d just have him analyze situations similar to how I do and hope that that makes him a believable character. So, like I said in what I relate to, his analytical skills are based off of my own. He’s much better at staying cool under pressure though. My brain tends to stop working so well when I’m stressed, so he can assess and deal with situations at times where my mind would be blanking.

Oh, and he’s bad at keeping his emotions off of his face. I just remembered that I put that in there too, and that’s how I am as well.

10. Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?

Yeah, he’s straight. Romance isn’t going to be a big part of the plot though. I’m not yet comfortable with writing a guy, much less a guy in love!

11. What have you found to be the most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art; writing, drawing, edits, ect.)?

Y’know, I haven’t even thought about doing this? My visual imagination isn’t super clear though, so I don’t actually have a good picture in my head of what he looks like. (It’s hard to describe. I get kind of impressions of a face, or pieces, but if I try to draw up a clear mental image there isn’t one there.) I guess that’s your answer! Just visualizing what I want!

12. How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?

Oh dear. Considering I don’t even know how I want the story to end yet…

13. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?  

1) Llewelyn has pride issues, but he’s good at hiding it.

2)  Beyond some moral lines he won’t cross, he will do whatever it takes to become King.

14. What is something about your OC that can make you laugh?

He can be quite sarcastic.

15. What is something about you OC that can make you cry?

The fact that he’s been forced into a really difficult, almost hopeless situation that’s made worse by the fact that a goddess dispassionately hates his guts (she’s indifferent to him personally, his family as a whole on the other hand…) When the universe is out to get you, that’s pretty crushing.

16. Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?

Not regret so much as don’t actually know how to write. I want him to be quite charismatic, persuasive, and manipulative, and I do not excel in any of those areas. It’s like the conundrum of trying to write someone more intelligent than you are. I can picture these situations in which he might use those skills, but I’m afraid that what I write will end up making him sound awkward, which is how I would feel in those scenarios. That’s probably a sign of my own insecurity, and he might not sound awkward, but I’m not sure. This is an aspect of him that I’m going to need outside feedback on to get right, so that I’m not blinded by my own insecurities/biases.

17. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

Believe it or not until I answered question 4 I hadn’t thought about how the fact that his country was poor would affect him! I had taken the fact that he was royalty into account, but not that. So, I just discovered about ten minutes ago that his ambition (he was always going to be ambitious) is largely fueled by his desire to enrich his kingdom.

18. What is your favorite fact about your OC?

Oh, that’s a tough one! If I were being flippant I’d say it’s his name. Llewelyn. It’s so fun to say. A more serious answer would be that he is not going to give up, that he’ll grow as a person on his journey, he’ll never lose hope, and he’ll succeed.

LOOKING FOR LONG-TERM ROLEPLAY PARTNER(S)

Hello! You can call me Aether. I am a 20 (almost 21 — July 10!!) year old male (FtM) who is currently looking for a long-term, active, and engaged roleplay partner(s) who have (relatively) consistent muse, and is also looking for a friend! I’m inching on 11 years of written roleplay experience; I started doing Warrior Cats on an old forum called forestpeltsden, and moved to a blended OC + Canon characters based website with the same group. When the group dissipated besides one friend, I started looking to Discord based RP’s and unfortunately found very few servers of interest — especially ones with individuals who are consistent, and/or with a server that doesn’t die due to the server owner shutting it down unexpectedly. I live in West Coast Canada. Post times correlate best for me with individuals who are PST, CST or EST, but any timezone or place works. I only roleplay in English since it is my only language.

What am I looking for?

While I’ll do any of these universes, I’m mostly looking for a partner who is interested in Marvel RP. Specifically, I’m looking for someone who’s willing to do an AU that takes place directly after Avengers 1, but differs in that Loki was kept at SHIELD on Earth, granted “freedom” in exchange for his continued alligence, or whatever they can get from him. “Freedom” and “alligence” is used sparingly here. Really what I mean is they force his stay. The Loki in this universe is schizophrenic.

I also do 1 on 1 character threads, but I would really prefer for us each to have a handful of characters we always play so we can keep things fresh and interesting.

I’m mostly looking for a singular partner, but if this sounds like something that a group would be interested in, please let me know and we can definitely make it work. I’m always looking for close-knit, group based RPs as well.

Be active, and let me know if you will be MIA. Real life comes first, obviously, but at least mention it? I’m looking for someone consistent who will be in on this for awhile. The longest consistent RP I’ve done is one that’s lasted 7 years. I won’t give up on you if you do not give up on me.

Some general things that are required:

- You must be okay with very descriptive and long posts. One-liners don’t do it for me; you must write 3+ sentences with enough to work with. One-liners are ok if we are going back and forth very fast, but I am a literate multi-para roleplayer and do not enjoy short reply posts.

- Correct grammer, please and thanks. Please reread what you write. Obviously I don’t mind the occasional error and typo in a post, but care about what you’re writing and use please. Quality over quantity, ALWAYS.

- You must be okay with roleplaying some difficult themes such as death, illness, mental illness (this will not be made to look cool or romantic), and others. I will discuss what these are with you beforehand. If you have specific triggers or concerns about anything, please let me know. I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable. :)

- I will never roleplay child abuse or incest and if you DM me asking I will ignore you. Vore, scat, and others are also big yikes.

- I’m looking for someone active! I would prefer daily posts to a couple posts a week, but I totally understand if something comes up — just please let me know because I’ll worry about you! 🙃

- Be okay with the inclusion of OCs and roleplayed canon characters with personal interpretation, especially if they are from mythology, even if you do not not play those kinds of toons as well.

What can YOU expect?

You can expect between one to multiple multi-paragraph replies a week. If I am not busy, I may even reply several times a day (depending on your availability as well). If you want to gush over our characters, I’m down for that 100% of the time PLEASE GUSH TO ME ABOUT OUR CHARACTERS!!

I do prefer Discord for RP, whether just in DMs or even to make a server for it. That way, we can have a place for faceclaims, character sheets, and even art. I will give my Discord tag to anyone who is interested.

I will be mindful of any triggers you mention.

How about sexual roleplay?

I will write smut. Actually, I will write very detailed smut. I will basically do any pairing so long as it happens naturally. Please understand that I prefer roleplay to be an 80-20 distribution. This is not a call for a sex-based roleplay. Also, if a thread becomes sex-related I’ll immediately label it nsfw in case we are doing multiple in the same universe. I do not respond to smut as fast as regular roleplays. This is for individuals who are 18+. Minors must be kept safe; if I catch you lying to me about your age, I will immediately block you. Seriously, if I suspect you have lied to me, I will block you. Secondly, I will never RP child abuse, incest, vore or scat. I might consider certain other things, but you will have to ask.

Okay, so what kind of roleplays do you do?

I’m really open to anything, to be honest. Gonna put a big no on anime, but other than that I love all kinds of roleplays. Character Creation Tag [Aiden]

@jynecca tagged me for this, thank you very much! I’m going to do Aiden for this~

1) What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.?)

Oh man Aiden was created so long ago...

I think that it was either his concept or face claim that came first? I can’t remember. I know that I wanted to make my own take on the arrogant popular jerk archetype, and I also immediately knew that I wanted to use Jake Abel.

2) Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

Nope! I originally made him for a roleplay when I legitimately didn’t have any friends on that site and didn’t know anyone so I made him all by my lonesome.

3) How did you choose their name?

It didn’t require a whole lot of thought, it was one of those glorious moments where you just immediately know what their full name is, and it fit perfectly.

4) In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?

The very original setting in which he was created for involved high society, so that established his family’s significant wealth.

I can’t remember when I gave him his emotionally abusive family backstory, but that’s also a consistent, important part of his character. The urban fantasy elements of Wanderlust and his status as a witch played really nicely into this family dynamic — this had a huge impact on his personality, and he turned out completely different than before. For starters, he’s much less of a popular kid, he’s an outcast now, and he’s nicer, and super passive, and if I had to describe him in one word it would be ‘wry’.

5) Is there any significance behind their hair colour?

I just wanted a blonde!

6) Is there any significance behind their eye colour?

Nope.

7) Is there any significance behind their height?

Nope. He’s tall, and that’s about it.

8) What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?

Aiden has a really dry sense of humor, and he makes a lot of deadpan jokes about death. I do that too.

9) Are they based off of you, in some way?

Usually I’ll give me spiel here about how I don’t put myself in my characters, but I normally can’t deny that there are some sort of similarities.

Not Aiden. I literally cannot find any piece of me in him if I tried.

I don’t think this is a matter of him being completely different from me, I think it’s a sign that despite all of the progress I’ve made with who he is, I still need to dig deeper.

10) Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?

Aiden has always been pansexual! I actually think he was the very first of my ‘all of my characters are bi/pan’ thing.

11) What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: Writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?

Jake Abel is a pretty minor actor — I’m fairly certain that at this point, I’ve seen literally every single gif and image of him that exists on the internet. They’re not all that great of a quality, or they don’t work as Aiden, so it’s always a struggle trying to find gifs/images of him to use in edits.

12) How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?

I know that he’ll have a kid with his love interest at some point — probably sooner rather than later after the events of Wanderlust. (Might be even sooner in Morsmordre...) But beyond that, honestly not much. I feel like he’ll probably end up as a doctor or a lawyer at some point, but I have no idea what his future is going to look like. Aiden probably hasn’t given it much thought either, he never felt like he had a future.

Fun fact: me and @autofoebia once wrote a 60+ page fic about buddy cop Aiden and King (autofoebia’s character) way before Wanderlust was even conceived. This was a future AU where they were a lot older — although I wouldn’t consider it canonical anymore since Aiden as a character has changed so damn much since then, it still counts, yeah?

13) If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

Aiden is a troubled guy. His trauma isn’t necessarily apparent, but it influences him a lot and creeps into his thoughts and behavior. 

He acts cool, but he’s not actually cool. 

14) What is something about your OC that can make you laugh?

There are times that he tries to be cool and do something all cool-like, and he ends up failing and embarrassing himself. Then he tries to brush it off all casually, and Aiden, please. Most people aren’t fooled.

15) What is something about your OC can make you cry?

No matter how far he runs away, he can never really get away from his family. They always turn up to haunt him at his lowest moments — and I don’t mean they haunt his nightmares, I literally mean they physically show up at the worst possible time. And naturally they ruin everything.

16) Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?

I think I regret his character creation. I have a lot of love and appreciation for Aiden, but I’m not entirely sure I ever had a proper idea of who he was. He’s never been a good character, and honestly he probably didn’t deserve to be brought back, but he continues to pop up in my writing a lot. I wish that when he was first created, I had been better at character creation — it’s been like 3 years since his creation and I’m still super struggling with him.

I’ll figure you out someday Aiden, I swear it.

17) What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

He’s a huge dork. I don’t understand how this happened. He was supposed to be suave, but nope. He’s a massive dork now and it’s very ???

18) What is your favourite fact about your OC?

He’s one-half of my og ship. None of my other ships would’ve happened without this guy.

Character Creation Tag [Alistair]

Thanks for tagging me, @pens-swords-stuff <3 

Since I’m writing for Post-Script at present, I thought I’d muster up the creativity to write some stuff about Alistair in his original ‘verse.

1) What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.?)

 So, Alistair was first designed for one of the first roleplays I ever joined – a vampire one, naturally – and though it was about five years ago now that he was made, I definitely decided on concept first. That original version is a bit embarrassing, but when I remade him at first for For Queen and Country, I wanted him to be a smooth-talking businessman, a well-known figure in his local community, but in a ‘big fish, small pond’ kind of way.

The result was a vampire who’s lived for centuries, but instead of running for parliament or anything like that, he owns most of the rental properties in the area and spends all his time on petty, low-level politics. Like, Facebook-group level drama.

Obviously when reworking him for Post-Script (a Harry Potter AU written with @pens-swords-stuff) he kept some of that, and understanding politics remains a large part of his character there. But I’ll be focusing on For Queen and Country for this ask game.

2) Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

I will be the first to admit that I brainstorm everything about my characters with @pens-swords-stuff. In Alistair’s case, the journalist Blake is a huge part of his story (and vice versa!).

3) How did you choose their name?

I liked the name Alistair, and it just seemed to fit. His surname changed once or twice before settling on Queen. No relation to the title of the work For Queen and Country, just a happy little accident.

Additionally, I also decided later on that he would have Anglicized his name after a few centuries, so his birth name would have been Alasdair. Surnaming in Scotland actually took place later than in the rest of the UK, so he wouldn’t have been given one at birth. Instead, I figured he adopted the surname Macqueen in the 17th or 18th century during a foray into clan politics and Anglicized it upon moving to London.

 Plus, it’s fun when vampires who knew him in the early days still call him by his old name.

 4) In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?

So the rough idea of For Queen and Country is that the Other (supernatural creatures) exist in secret, but their society gets blown wide open shortly before the story begins thanks to social media, bad luck, and a touch of conspiracy.

 5) Is there any significance behind their hair colour?

Nope. (Dirty blonde).

 6) Is there any significance behind their eye colour?

Nope. (Brown).

 7) Is there any significance behind their height?

Not particularly – he’s about average height (5’9”).

8) What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?

It’s pretty hard for me to relate to Alistair. He’s a capitalist, semi-ambitious, from an entirely different time period, and is just at home in a city, in the limelight, in any social situation. At times this makes him very hard to write for. 

 9) Are they based off of you, in some way?

I mean, he’s from Scotland. I think when writing his off-handed jokes (of which there are a lot) they’re not too dissimilar from my own sense of humour. Maybe a little less crude.

 10) Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?

Oh, for sure – Alistair has always been and will always be bisexual.

 11) What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: Writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?

Hi my name’s McHaggis, I’m 20 and I can’t fuckin’ draw.

 12) How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?

 Not that far to be honest. I have reimagined him for several different settings and universes, though.

 13) If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

 1. He has a minor obsession with money, or rather, not being poor himself, hence why he continues to seek out financial opportunities and has safeguards upon safeguards even though he’s pretty loaded. Call it childhood trauma: he lived and died as a pauper on the streets, and he has a very good memory.

2. I don’t want him to be apathetic about anything, especially life. Living for so long, it seems like it would get boring, but I think vampires (and Alistair in particular) perceive the world and the passage of time differently, so to him there are still infinite opportunities out there, and if he must do something he’s done before, it’s strongly nostalgic rather than repetitive.

14) What is something about your OC that can make you laugh?

 Vampire jokes, my dudes. Classic.

15) What is something about your OC can make you cry?

I don’t think there’s anything about Alistair that would make me cry.

Half-vampires (dhampires) exist in this universe, but they tend to have a lifespan of about 35 years. Alistair has been a father before, to a suitably angsty conclusion each time.

 16) Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?

 I definitely regret making him such an old-ass vampire when I have to research history and what he would have been doing in a certain century.

 17) What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

He has a sister now - Vanessa! Found family rather than blood relatives, but still. It filled a gap in his overall character for close friends and family, as I wondered for a time if he wouldn’t have any of those.

 18) What is your favourite fact about your OC?

Ooh, a toughie. Probably the fact that he has no angst whatsoever about being a vampire, but neither does he think it’s anything special - it’s not a curse or a gift, it’s just no big deal. He’d be happy to offer it to anyone he’s sort-of friends with and would like to stick around for more than a few decades.

Also, he had a glam rock phase.

 Continuing down the Expect to Fly character list, I guess? We’ll go with Erith! Halfway through the friend group!

1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering? (Name, appearance, backstory etc.)

Possibly just like... her name...

 idk I needed friends for Ifernia to bounce off etc so I looked at what I liked about my friends and... switched that about a bit? I guess?

2. Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

 Not especially! I knew she was going to be the voice of reason kinda thing so she had to be someone the others sort of listened to if not necessarily looked up to (I mean they’re all 16 or thereabouts no one’s looking up to anyone)

3. How did you choose their name?

 I’m fairly sure I picked syllables and went “ah yes, that sounds nice” and rolled on

4. In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they lived in played the most influential parts?

Haha backstory what backstory

 Nah uh well with the last edit of the book I changed up a lot with the friend group, and part of that was making Erith bi, poly, trans, but I didn’t want it to be a “find thyself” arc because she’s kinda minor (and also I’m not half those things so I didn’t want to do it badly etc) so she’s just confident in them from the start. o I had to think what kinda home life she’d’ve had to be that confident and clear about everything, and so unapologetic about what she is (I mean she doesn’t shout it from the rooftops but she also doesn’t shy away if people ask, ya get me?)

 I think I gave her two dads? everyone’s backstory is a constant work in progress. I just pull what I need to for what’s at hand and sort of... make stuff up as I go along and hope it doesn’t clash with anything I’ve said before.

5. Is there any significance behind their hair colour?

nah listen I literally picked their face character out like the other day as I was falling asleep

not especially! I think she’s... possibly the shortest in the group? Idk. I sorta get the impression that she’s small and soft and round. Good for comfort. Best at hugs. good pillow etc

 Not much, tbh? She’s got a level of comfort with herself that I never had, and she’s able to confidently assume people will listen to her when she says a thing. She’s also. you know. able to say things without second guessing herself and letting the moment pass

 actually no! for once haha

10. Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?

Nooooope

 I mean in the original draft they were all straight lmao. Ifernia is legit the only one that’s stayed that way

 I occasionally find it hard writing from her point of view for side things? I mean I’ve only written one thing from her point of view but w/e. It’s occasionally tricky keeping her... not brash and out-and-out about everything, ‘cause she’s gotta be the understanding one

 Again, original draft... I think I gave her kids and a career in something? Ifernia met one of her great-great grandchildren or smth

I think the way, in the last draft, she just sort of... looked around at her friends and sighed, folded her arms and said “looks like I’m the mum friend” while trying to be disappointed about this but also just... genuinely pleased.

 Hmmmm

nothing that I’m aware of? at least not yet.

not especially, but it’s early days yet. Sort of.

 I say, of a character who has been around for almost ten years

 I mean I regret making her straight to begin with, but I can say that of a lot of my early characters
