Song Review: The Old 97’s and Kevin Bacon - “Here it is Christmastime” (Fallon)

It’s stupid - but in a fun way. And the Old 97’s’ “Here it is Christmastime” isn’t mawkish like virtually every other contemporary holiday song.

So it’s got that going for it.

When we are born we are swaddled and suckled/whispered to, fussed over, tickled and cuddled/when we grow up things get muddled/and here it is, Christmastime, is verse No. 1.

The band re-recorded their swaying holiday track with Kevin Bacon for the “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” and went on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” to promote them both.

Will you stop by for a piece of delicious/peach pie while I tell you my yuletide wishes/you can help me do the dishes/’cause here it is, Christmastime, goes No. 2.

See what Sound Bites did there?

Like the blog’s sophomoric gag, “Here it is Christmastime” is utterly forgettable. Sleigh bells notwithstanding, it isn’t utterly formulaic and is, therefore, listenable.

While Old 97's second album, 1995's Wreck Your Life, continues the forlorn West Texas twang-a-billy that they pioneered with their debut, the sharp songwriting of vocalist Rhett Miller steps out to the forefront this time around. He weeps through the lovesick romp "Doreen" and chunks through longtime favorite "Big Brown Eyes" with a newfound poetic touch to the age-old traumas of love.
