Just curious, opinions on the different nutcrackers that you know of from all kinds of media and stuff?
Sorry if anyone asked this before I wouldn't know
Love your art and characters by the way keep it up!
Hohohohohohohoho, we be opening the Pandora Box here. Not that I'm complaining~
So, this is going to be a very long post as I've seen a lot of the movies. I also have a couple books which I can give my opinion, and I'm familiar with various apparitions in videogames and such. So yeah this is going to be a loooooooong post.
So buckle up, grab a drink and enjoy the ride into my personal madness o7
Tumblr media
[ CAREFUL, VERY LONG POST UNDER THE CUT ]
So, let's start with movies as those are easier to grab and talk about for me. I'm gonna go with their year of release ot keep things organized.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Shchelkunchik (1973)
Tumblr media
Small silly dramatic guy, I like him! The animators did a great job animating his design and make him incredibly appealing. As for his human appearance, eeeeeh I don't really care for him. Definitely a shock the first time you see it lol But yes, adorable silly guy
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Nutcracker Fantasy (1979)
Tumblr media
Li'l guy. It is Sanrio so it's bound to be on the cute side. The Nutcracker itself doesn't do much in the movie, but as for Fritz himself, I... honestly don't care about him. He looks pretty, but personality wise he needs to work on it pff Idk he just comes out as plain and a little arrogant... Still a fine fellow, though.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Nutcracker: The Motion Picture (1986)
Tumblr media
One of the two ballet-based movies I've seen, and definitely the better one of the two imo. And good lord I love this guy. He may look terrifying but good lord if he's silly. And I actually don't mind his human appearance as simple as it is. Silly man, this one.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker Prince (1990)
Tumblr media
HIM. MY BELOVED. THE GOOD LAD. Definitely my favorite, and not because this was my most beloved childhood movie. He is such a sweetheart with a hint of awkwardness but who can still kick your ass. And the final scene in the castle in the Italian dub is just *chef kiss* 10/10 lad.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker (1993)
Tumblr media
The other ballet-based movie... it's just Macaulay Culkin. And his nutcracker costume looks hideous lol. Nothign to say. Surprisingly, he's not the worst one.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nuttiest Nutcracker (1999)
Tumblr media
Ripoff Ken. He is incredibly dumb, and a tiny bit of a freak, but could be worse honestly kdjng They did Barbie before Barbie did it lol that's p much it.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001)
Tumblr media
THE OTHER GOOD LAD. I love Eric so much he's such a sweetheart wanting to fix his mistakes. It's so easy to root for him. As for his human appearance... he's just Ken skjngf 10/10 lad #2
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker and the MouseKing (2004)
Tumblr media
Oh boy what to say about this one. Very hateful in the first half. At least he learns and becomes bearable at the last third of the movie. But I do like the nutcracker form, they made the blocky design work as well, like later on it's actually very nice to see him move. Still, horrible personality. Needs a slap in the face.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Nutcracker in 3D / Nutcracker: The Untold Story (2010)
Tumblr media
Hellspawn. Nightmare fuel. Abomination. Who the hell approved to that design?? And why did they pitch up his voice like that?? At least the kid playing human NC is not as bad, but good lord. 0/10 Just burn that puppet with fire, please.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)
Tumblr media
This one just pisses me off. This one had so much potential, and the actor is actually good. It's just the way his character was written that is dog awful. They made him basically a dumb side character who barely does anything despite everyone in the movie treating him like he's a big shot. And the the fact that this was made by Disney just makes this worse. Just so much lost potential.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker (???)
Tumblr media
I actually don't know who made this movie or in which year, but I do like this one. The movie is comedic so he's a bit silly, but he's still quite enjoyable. And for some reason he reminds me of Waluigi.... Still, silly guy.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
That's all for the movies. There are a bunch more that I've missed or that I can't find anymore so my list of opinions on them is not complete. But one day...
---
As for other medias, hm... I have a couple books that are just the original story by Hoffman and the retell by Duman (of which I don't have much to say) and the graphic novel by Natalie Andrewson.
Tumblr media
He's just a li'l guy, silly kid but enjoyable.
---
Lastly, while there are no actual nutcracker based games, I do want to mention a few skins and characters I am aware of for the hell of it. I'm pretty sure I will be forgetting some but eh.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Terraria
Tumblr media
Silly guy that speeeens. I wish I didn't have to kill them skgjfn.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Overwatch
Tumblr media
As much as I now despise Overwatch for many reasons, I still love Zenyatta's nutcracker skin to death. Look at this silly guy. Definitely my favorite skin in the game.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Saints Row IV
Tumblr media
SR4 had a Christmas themed DLC, and among all the xmas reskins of the enemies, one was the terminator-like enemies being turned into Nutcrackers. And their design look so sick.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Fortnite
Tumblr media
I don't play Fortnite, but I do have to admit that the nutcracker guy looks neat. The crazy look fits the look quite well. If I would ever get in there (I doubt it but still), that would definitely be the skin I would use.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Lethal Company
Tumblr media
I don't play LC neither but I've seen videos of the nutcracker enemy in action, and yeah he looks silly. I love how he moves around.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
That's all of the apparitions that I can think of. I'm also aware of the point-and-click game made by Big Fish Games, but I have not played it myself. I really should do that one day...
---
Aaaaaand that's a wrap. I'm definitely forgetting a nutboi or two somewhere but these are all the ones I can think of at the top of my head that are officially published and all.
If we start talking about folks in social medias I've come to know over the years... I'm gonna be here for 3 months trying to talk about them dkjfgn
Well, hope you enjoyed this personal spiraling into nut madness :V

🎅❣️❣️...Alright~! =OwO=✨One of my most favourite and magical times of the year, is here once again!😃✨☃️🎄I know it's been quite another year for a lot of us, but I am still willing to spread some delightful festive cheer as always, especially with my special annual Christmas piece~!✏️💝😊 This year, I wished to draw my beloved Cooper and I/my trollsona starring in the one of my most favourite Christmas stories and inspirations of all time - The Nutcracker (Suite)~! =^.^=🌟Also inspired by classic adaptations of my childhood, such as Disney's House Of Mouse's own Nutcracker tale with a twist (2001), The Nutcracker Prince (1990), Barbie In The Nutcracker (2001) and even The Nuttiest Nutcracker (1999), here we have Cooper as my very own dashingly handsome nutcracker and me as his very own Sugar Plum Princess~💜💂🏿👑💗🩰👸🏻💚🥰 But we're not alone, for two of my dear friends, Kaitlin and Emi (@groovinyeen) recommended that I draw Guy Diamond and ALSO, Tiny Diamond - as sugar plum fairies!😆✨🧚🏾✨I was totally up for the challenge, for this is the first time I ever drew Guy and Tiny, and Guy is looking as fab as ever in that pose with his wand~😏✨Along with Tiny looking so adorbs too - I am just so proud of how they both turned out!😚💖 Over all, I am absolutely over the moon of how this beautifully festive and cozy scene turned out~!🌈💓🤩💓🌈I always amaze myself with how much I feel I improve with each annual Christmas masterpiece, and this year's has to be one of my grandest ones yet - just how I imagined it too~💝🥹 Hope you all like too, my sweet peeps!😁👍🏻✨And Guy Diamond, Tiny Diamond, Cooper and I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas & Happy (Troll) Holidays~💝🎄🎁❄️💚🫂So do enjoy all you can, my lovelies~🫶🏻😘💕As always, stay safe, stay strong and from me, to all of you…~ 🎅🎄❄️Merry Christmas 2023 & A Happy New Year~!❄️🎄🎅 =^o^=

Because I'm still on a nostalgia kick for '90s non-Disney animation.
Most of these early '90s movies on this list are considered notoriously bad, but they still have cult followings, so let's see which ones are the most popular!

Mikhail Baryshnikov (dancer, born January 27, 1948, in Riga, Latvia) "Working is living to me,'' Mikhail Baryshnikov once said. He has worked hard and lived to the fullest. His name is synonymous with dance throughout the world. His dancing is a sublime vision at the dawn of a new century. Mikhail Nikolaevitch Baryshnikov was born in Riga in 1948 and began his ballet studies there in 1960. In 1964, he entered the Vaganova School in what was then called Leningrad, studying with the legendary Aleksander Pushkin and soon winning the top prize in the junior division of the International Varna Competition. Word began spreading of this extraordinary young dancer of precious classical purity and exquisite presence. Clive Barnes gave notice of what was to come after observing the student Baryshnikov in Pushkin's class, describing him as ""the mostemperfect dancer I have ever seen.'' He joined the Kirov Ballet and made his debut at the Maryinsky Theater in 1967, dancing the “Peasant” pas de deux in Giselle. Choreographers recognized in Baryshnikov a unique instrument for new dance, and soon Oleg Vinogradov, Konstantin Sergeyev, Igor Tchernichov, and Leonid Jakobson created ballets for him. Jakobson's 1969 Vestris, a feast of virtuosity and wit, became Baryshnikov's signature role and, along with his intensely otional Albrecht in Giselle, his calling card to his new home. Baryshnikov defected from the Soviet Union in 1974 in search for artistic and personal freedom in the West. He made his debut with the American Ballet Theatre that same year, dancing Giselle with Natalia Makarova. He stayed with ABT for the next four years, voraciously learning and defining new roles, expanding his horizons as well as those of male dancing. memorably, he also staged ABT's productions of The Nutcracker, Don Quixote and Cinderella. In 1978, Baryshnikov left ABT for New York City Ballet, where he could work with George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. He returned to ABT in 1980, not only as principal danceR&But also as artistic director, a distinguished position he held for almost a decade. In the years that followed, Baryshnikov's explorations of artistic frontiers became one of the most dazzling spectacles of the age: dances by Merce Cunningham and Erick Hawkins, the play Metamorphosis on Broadway, The Turning Point, White Nights and Dancers on screen, my Award-winning television specials with Twyla Tharp and Liza Minnelli, glittering galas for Martha Graham and Paul Taylor. Baryshnikov is a naturalized American citizen. In 1990, he teamed up with Mark Morris and founded the White Oak Project, a unique dance company that reflects Baryshnikov's passion for modern dance and bodies the extraordinary transformation of a paragon of Russian ballet into the very model of perfection in American modern dance. Not long after coming to the United States, Baryshnikov looked both back and ahead at the immense possibilities of a dancer's lifetime. "I have been very lucky to work in so many new ballets, but that is what a dancer's work is,'' he wrote in the 1978 Baryshnikov At Work. He likened the challenge of dancing different choreographies and styles to learning new languages, confessing that "there are never enough.'' He added that "every ballet, whether or not successful artistically or with the public, has given me something important. Everything that I've done has given me more freedom.'' Has anyone in the field of dance ever made so much of that freedom? The generosity of Baryshnikov's spirit braces the world. He has danced to Adam and Tchaikovsky, but also to Dmitri Shostakovich and Philip Glass, to Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra. He has danced to silence, and he has danced to his own heartbeat. He has been the ideal Albrecht and Prince Siegfried, but he has also stepped out in style as a paragon of jazz dancing. He has been, and continues to be, a surprise. He bodies so many different and impossibly beautiful things to so many people that it is next to impossible to define him save to say this: Mikhail Baryshnikov is a dancer.

Pro-tip: If you find yourself in need of a larger/more diverse cast of names to choose from for your characters, simply sit down and go through the credits of a film. My favorite media to do this with is 90s cartoon movies.
For example: The Nutcracker Prince, 1990
Rick Lemire
Mike Csunyoscka
Rose Biviens
Dean Deblois
Woong Cheon Jang
Hana Kukal
John Celestri
Dev Ramsaran
Wendo Van Essen

What's Up With WAG?
Tumblr media
What's going on with Warner Animation Group?
Coincidentally, WAG was set up by the shield in early 2013, some ten years ago... about a year ahead of the release of THE LEGO MOVIE. The name has been used for numerous theatrical animated movies that have come out of Warner Bros. (now Warner Bros. Discovery, blehhh) ever since. All of which are conceived in California, but animated and produced elsewhere, as Warner Bros. Animation themselves - makers of most of the 2D direct-to-disc movies like the DC and Scooby-Doo films - doesn't make them. Confused? It definitely sounds it.
Anyways, so far, WAG has offered:
The four LEGO MOVIEs and DC LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS, all animated at Animal Logic
STORKS and SMALLFOOT, both of which were produced up at Sony Imageworks
SCOOB! and the likely-never-to-be-released SCOOB! HOLIDAY HAUNT, animated at Reel FX
TOM & JERRY, a hybrid whose animation was done by Framestore
SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY, again, a hybrid, with multiple houses contributing
On the horizon is a live-action hybrid Looney Tunes movie called COYOTE VS. ACME, which originally carried a summer 2023 release date, before disappearing into the ether. Filming wrapped on the live-action portions a year ago, but WBD continues to be silent about it for the most part. Ditto TOTO, based on the OZ-inspired book TOTO: THE DOG-GONE AMAZING STORY OF THE WIZARD OF OZ, which used to carry a February 2024 release date. Nothing on that one, either. It's as if they're not happening, or Warner just doesn't know when they'll release them... And after their CEO's purge of animation, from offloading certain projects to other distributors (like that upcoming Batman show, BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER) to outright near-erasing them from existence (FINAL SPACE, SCOOB! HOLIDAY HAUNT), I worry for them a bit.
The only animated feature from WBD with a concrete release date is THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM (April 12, 2024), which doesn't appear to be a WAG-branded picture. That's a Warner Bros. Animation collaboration with anime studio Sola Digital Arts, so it makes sense. They also recently released a Spanish picture called MUMMIES in a small amount of cinemas.
But in a way, did WAG even need to be a thing? Not the movies themselves, but that whole "brand"? That whole sort-of animated movie "think tank", as they once called it?
I get it, in a way. Warner has had an on-and-off sloppy history with animated features, and they seemed to think that Pixar Brain Trust-ing their way into a robust slate of animated movies was the way to go, but so many cancelled projects, flops, miscalculations and upper-level transitions later... What is there to do? The other big distributors who aren't Disney eventually got it right (i.e. Universal with Illumination, pre-Disney 20th Century Fox with Blue Sky when they still existed, etc.), but it feels like Warner Bros. is still having a hard time doing so. Ditto Paramount, who might finally get a post-2012 animation ball rolling with this summer's TMNT adventure MUTANT MAYHEM.
Warner had released animated features prior to the 2nd Golden Age of American Animation (late 80s/early 90s), such as the UPA's GAY PURR-EE and Filmation's TREASURE ISLAND, and also... Looney Tunes clipshow movies, but they tried to really get started on the features game once the Golden Age hit. But they tripped out of the gate: THE NUTCRACKER PRINCE came and went in 1990, ROVER DANGERFIELD apparently got matinee'd and disappeared a year later - a project significantly watered down from its original concept (an R-rated cartoon comedy based on a very R-rated comedian), they lost Richard Williams' to-be opus THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER to a completion bond company when things went south, and really... Throughout the '90s, only had a box office success in SPACE JAM. A Looney Tunes movie... With Michael Jordan... Everything else they released from roughly 1990 to about 2004, flopped: THUMBELINA, A TROLL IN CENTRAL PARK, QUEST FOR CAMELOT, THE KING AND I, OSMOSIS JONES, LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION and even the beloved THE IRON GIANT.
They saw some success with THE POLAR EXPRESS, and later HAPPY FEET... But then didn't score similarly with a HAPPY FEET sequel nor LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA'HOOLE (one of the worst titles for a movie whose source material had a much simpler title that they *should have went with in the first place*). Only a few small, profitable movies like CORPSE BRIDE and the 2007 TMNT movie happened. No real blockbusters, though.
WAG got off to a good start with THE LEGO MOVIE in 2014, STORKS and SMALLFOOT made back their small budgets, and THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE continued the success of LEGO MOVIE numero uno. But the flopping of the last LEGO MOVIE follow-ups resulted in the movie rights to the construction toy being sent over to Universal, who are picking up the slack with a still-undated LEGO MOVIE 3. COVID-19 rerouted SCOOB! to streaming, TOM & JERRY did okay-ish as a hybrid release prior to vaccine rollout, SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY - which by all means should've been a nostalgic blockbuster - tanked hard. I get that Delta was becoming a concern at the time, but that didn't stop something like SING 2, released during Omicron, from being a big hit. DC LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS, released this past summer, was their first truly profitable movie in a long while. They also blew a partnership with the studio that made RON'S GONE WRONG: Locksmith Animation, whose next film - THAT CHRISTMAS - is coming to Netflix.
Prior to all the shake-up following the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger, WAG also had a few Dr. Seuss-based pictures in the works: THE CAT IN THE HAT, THING ONE AND THING TWO, and OH THE PLACES YOU'LL GO... Those all might be up in the air as well.
I get the sense that post-Discovery merger, the whole WAG thing is just sort of on the back-burner. A sort-of "ehhhh what are we gonna do with this?" attitude.
Again, SCOOB! HOLIDAY HAUNT's fate. The first SCOOB! got rerouted to On Demand (and later HBO Max, soon to be called just... "Max"... Ehhhhh) after COVID-19 broke out in March 2020. The film would've been theatrically released in May 2020, so it going straight to VOD and streaming made sense. It was either that or a full-on year-long delay that other pictures, such as F9: THE FAST SAGA and the MINIONS sequel, got. They chose to just get it out, and it seemed to do well as a VOD title. So much so that they put a sequel in production, and actually completed. HOLIDAY HAUNT was to be an HBO Max-exclusive prequel, but rather than upping it to theatrical status and figuring out a release date for it, CEO David Zaslav - who made it firmly known today that WBD is no longer in the business of making streaming-only movies - killed it. HOLIDAY HAUNT is a fully-finished and fully-scored movie, but for legal reasons, it can never be released and no one can make money off of it. Great, huh? This could've be a modestly-budgeted theatrical release that could've collected some decent coin this past Christmas, but noooooooo-
(I'm still very bitter about that.)
So, that's one big dent. There's apparently a future for SUPER-PETS, per an announcement saying it would lead to a "universe". COYOTE VS. ACME and TOTO are totally in limbo, and it's not known what's going on with the Dr. Seuss movies. There doesn't seem to be anything else in some form of development there, and whatever was for a little while - such as an adaptation of George R. R. Martin's THE ICE DRAGON - is probably dead by now.
DC was completely revamped from the ground up per Zaslav's mandate, with James Gunn and Peter Safran now in charge, despite the fact that several movies under the previous head and part of the previous plan were shot. One of which, BATGIRL, was also hurled into the black hole by Zaslav, never to be seen. The remaining movies are all being released this year. SHAZAM 2 did badly, THE FLASH, BLUE BEETLE (originally an HBO Max movie, but upped to theatrical), and AQUAMAN 2 are next... Movies that seem to mean nothing going forward, as the whole thing is hard-resetting in 2025 with SUPERMAN: LEGACY anyways. What a mess...
I wonder if Warner Animation Group is seeing a similar overhaul. Bill Damaschke, former DreamWorks and Skydance Animation executive, had recently been tapped to lead up the place. Damaschke was a strong choice, given the heavy-hitters he oversaw during his long tenure with DreamWorks (dating aaaaall the way back to THE PRINCE OF EGYPT). I get the sense that there's a lot of rerouting going on there, too, as that often happens when animation studios get new heads and are set to go in new directions. It happened at DreamWorks, too.
So, maybe after COYOTE VS. ACME and TOTO - whenever the heck those come out, Warner Animation Group's future going forward might be very very different. It might be a clean-slate situation, a la DC Studios and the James Gunn Superman movie. A complete hard-reset, with maybe a few things kept around. I can imagine the SUPER-PETS movie still factoring into their future, and Looney Tunes movies obviously. I'd imagine they'd still do the Dr. Seuss movies, given how iconic Seuss' stories are, and the three theatrical animated adaptations - Blue Sky's HORTON HEARS A WHO! and Illumination's LORAX and GRINCH movies - all did well at the box office. Can't see Warner saying no to an animated CAT IN THE HAT movie, so I think that'll still be on.
What would I like to see from Warner Animation Group, myself?
Less reliance on their IPs, for starters.
Only STORKS and SMALLFOOT were relatively original stories in their line-up of features. And two movies that I quite liked! STORKS wasn't based on anything that already existed, while SMALLFOOT was based on an unpublished book. I love most of the LEGO movies, even if they are based on an iconic building toy and the movies themselves have strutted Warner Bros.' entire catalogue, but... If you think about it, STORKS and SMALLFOOT are just two movies amidst... DC, Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, etc. All Warner-owned properties. If you remember, SCOOB! was supposed to be the start a Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe, which would've continued with animated movies based on THE FLINTSTONES, THE JETSONS, and WACKY RACES. (Dick Dastardly and Muttley, of course, appear in SCOOB!) And of course, Dr. Seuss. Toto. (The 1939 WIZARD OF OZ being a Warner-owned picture.) It's all Warner IP, or if it isn't, it's something very very well-known and adapted into movies before.
Like... Anything else? I know THE ICE DRAGON is a book, but that would've been really neat for an animated feature. Ditto that BONE movie that they let go.
I don't know, it just seems weird to me. The way Warner Animation Group was largely just a hub for CG animated movies based on Warner properties. That'd be like Walt Disney Animation Studios gumming their slate up with animated Marvel and Star Wars movies. I remember when Disney Animation announced BIG HERO 6, their only Marvel Comics adaptation, back in 2012, there were concerns: "Oh no, is WDAS going to be just an outlet for animated Marvel movies now?" But that didn't happen, that comic was so loosely adapted that BIG HERO 6 might as well could've have been an original story about a boy and his marshmallow-robot. And it didn't get a feature sequel, either. Ever since BIG HERO 6 came out, Disney Animation has continued to make new worlds and revisit two others. Marvel Studios has an animation wing, who have made WHAT IF...? and some other upcoming projects, so they'd likely do future animated Marvel movies. Not WDAS or Pixar. And Lucasfilm has an animation division, too, so an animated STAR WARS movie would likely come out of them.
Anyways, I hope for the best for WAG...

i think the nutcracker would have been more interesting if clara was a boy
a young boy with interests that aren’t conventionally masculine (contrasting with his younger brother who cares about toy soldiers), and loves ballet but isn’t able to voice that to his parents, so politely smiles at xmas presents he knows he’ll never play with
enters drosselmeyer and his intricate toys that people of all ages and genders are in awe of, making it easy for clara to show interest without making too obvious what he likes the most about it
and drosselmeyer brings the nutcracker, a strange looking doll who isn’t a soldier. who has long hair. who clara can hold on without too much attention  brought on himself
who, at night, becomes a partner to dance with
who, when awaken with the other dolls, bring clara into a dream where he doesn’t have to worry about the things he likes, how he presents himself, and what others think of him
when the nutcracker ask him to stay in the doll world and clara rejects him, it’s not only because he wants to grow up and see the world... it’s a rejection of himself too. of this dream he knows he cannot stay in. it’s fear that cause pain to all the dolls and himself
it’s the mouse king he has to fight all alone. clara who does not think himself brave. who listened to drosselmeyer’s story about the nutcracker and wished for someone to help him but didn’t belive in himself to be the one to do so
his heartbreak and his victory in the toy world that he keeps close to him, when he’s back
his growth
