litg s9: mc
i missed my old mc tags from s3/4 so bringing this back for a bit of fun. template is random questions I came up with if anyone else wants to use it or be inspired by it.
Tumblr media
Belle Hughes
FC: Olivia Moore
Age: 28
Occupation: musical theatre performer still
Hometown: Kingston-Upon-Thames
Current Location: Brixton
Which season is she from?: S3 of Love Island UK where she was coupled up with Harry. After things fizzled out with him and she was single for a while, she was invited onto Love Island Australia.
How old was she on her season?: 22 for UK, 25 for AU.
What happened after she left her season of Love Island?: she went on to get a part in Waitress where she understudied Jenna, had a role as Sandy in Grease on the West End and most recently toured with Mamma Mia as Sophie and did a short stint on the West End as Sophie.
How did she leave her season?: for UK, she left with Harry but things turned pretty sour after a boat trip - and she wasn’t going to take his shit anymore so called it off after all that. And AU - self explanatory, left in a friendship couple.
What convinced her to take part in All Stars?: she lowkey thinks she’s been done dirty on her UK and AU season but does love being part of the show. Also she thinks Rohan from S1 is attractive but doesn’t see him around at many events, so in all honesty, she was hoping he’d be on there.
Is there anything she would do differently this season to her previous experience?: yeah, not take anyone’s shit and call people out on it. And if she has to take part in a tent building activity that her LI moans about, she will kick off about it.
Best thing that happened from her season?: meeting her best friend Genevieve in LI UK and quoting H2O with contestants from LI AU.
Worst thing that happened from her season?: Harry forgetting her name in LI UK and probably leaving in a friendship couple in LI AU - she did end up feeling bad over the way Stefan was dumped but didn’t have as strong feelings as he did for her, so was glad she at least got to explore another connection.
Is there anyone she wants on All Stars?: Rohan, she thinks Rocco might deserve a second chance and would love to have Chelsea in the villa.
Is there anyone she wouldn’t want to have on All Stars?: Dylan - self explanatory.
Is she still friends with any of the cast from her season?: Genevieve, Elladine, Nicky, Seb and AJ - they all still keep in regular contact and have catch ups. Genevieve and her were best friends in the villa and remained best friends.
Any hidden talents?: other than her obvious talents from being on the West End, she can do a smashing Gemma Collins impression.
Random facts:
• the public backed her a lot during Love Island UK and she gained a lot of popularity from that which is why producers invited her back for Love Island AU and All Stars.
• she briefly worked with Cherry at a musical theatre charity show.
• there were rumours of her being linked to Lucas from various news articles, but it was all just rumours - he’d simply seen her in a show and was spotted chatting to her afterwards.
• she made a very public threads of tweets about Dylan in S4 and requested producers step in to remove him from the villa.
• she’s met various islanders from different Love Island events and has openly said Oliver is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.
• she wouldn’t mind appearing on Celebrity Hunted or The Masked Singer as other reality shows.
Current All Stars LI: Jude
Endgame All Star LI: Hamish, probably

continuing with the coroika band au
Tumblr media
@firefl1ezz I thought more about it so here ya go
Ok so
In this au, the world of splatoon has leaned into music a lot more and it’s the typical industry young inklings and octolings go into rather than turf wars.
Ofc the original idols and bands still exist, there’s just a lot more now
Some coroika characters work with their team as a band, and others are independent artists who occasionally collaborate with other people
They probably all have separate band names but I don’t wanna think of themmmm
Team Blue - an up and coming pop band trying to make a name for themselves. They kind of suck but they’re trying ok
Headphones - lead singer
Goggles: backup singer/guitarist
Bobble Hat - Drums
Specs: keyboard
The S4 - a group that formed out of a collaboration with some of the most popular musicians inkopolis. Their music styles clash in a way that produces a unique and chaotic sound. They don’t get along very well, which is the reason why they don’t do live shows together. Ever since Rider collaborated with them, they’ve also been referred to as the S5. Don’t ask me what the s is for here I don’t know
Army - classically trained and leader of a band who make instrumental music with a strong and prominent bass line (courtesy of B-Sailor, their bassist). Plays mainly piano but also knows violin. He has a great ear and can play a piece just from hearing it.
Aloha - Independent artist who often collaborates with a small group. Doesn’t play any instruments, but has a killer voice. Makes high energy pop songs perfect for dancing, which he exhibits during performances. Also has the largest social media presence, often meeting and taking photos with fans in public.
Mask - also an independent artist who produces electronic music (but specifically resembling real world artists such as odetari and 6arelyhuman). His voice is always auto tuned to the max, but he has an iconic drawl that’s easily recognizable.
Skull - leader of an alternative rock band, playing the drums. Was thinking bass guitar but the s4/5 need a percussionist so…drums. Maybe he can also play the bass, who knows. Doesn’t do live shows very often. He and his lead singer, Aviators, used to be part of a band with Vintage and Omega of X-Blood.
Rider - PUNK ROCK!! An independent artist known for his brash vocals and long guitar solos. Had collaborated with his own group and the s5 before. Has been trying to teach Goggles more guitar techniques, but has learned that Goggles doesn’t really care if his playing kind of sucks.
That’s all I really have for now, I’ll probably make a part 2 with other characters

something something dctv dinah (i rewrote it so that i would like it better thanks!!):
born in gotham city, new jersey, dinah grew up in a tiny two bedroom apartment under the eye of her single mother, dinah drake senior. by day, dinah senior worked in a floral shop, and by night, she was a crimefighter working unofficially alongside the gcpd. drake was murdered by brian durlin/savant when dinah was nine years old, resulting in dinah being tossed around different foster homes, relatives' houses, and abusive situations for about two years before she landed under the care of quentin lance, the father who didn't know she existed until shortly after dinah senior's death.
traumatized and exhausted, dinah took a long while to open up, and had a tendency to avoid causing trouble as a means of making sure she was always good enough to be loved. something something, dinah is who she is, laurel is more of the person she makes herself into. the only times she ever really loosened up were in her close friendships she made in school, and under the tutelage of ted grant, a close friend of dinah senior's. years prior to dinah's birth, ted had moved to starling to be closer to his own children and open up a gym; the gym would prove to be a safe place for dinah to express her anger/hurt/innermost shit feelings and learn how to defend herself effectively.
something something, oliver and sara die on the gambit, something something law school, something something occasionally street fighting people. something something, dinah getting fired from her job at the da's office leads to a temporary singing gig in a seedy club where she gets another up close and personal view into how working for the law doesn't always mean that the right people get punished. something something rise of the black canary coming from sara's re-death, dinah senior's death, everything she's ever learned at ted's gym, who she is as a person etc etc etc--
points that matter to me personally are as follows:
the struggle in becoming black canary comes not from a lack of skill (she's always been able to handle herself in a fight), but from a lack of experience in applying said skill to a completely uncontrolled environment. everyone she's ever thrown hands with has always been a) in a gym, or b) drunk frat boys and would-be muggers. at no point does she need to be taught how to throw a proper punch, but there is still a learning curve in terms of transferring what she knows to a vigilante-type environment, where people carry guns and bows, and things she generally hasn't needed to factor prior to picking up the mask.
she's not a shorts and fishnets girlie, so she adopts the injustice suit. she also tends to prefer her own two fists over the baton, but does carry it along with a sidearm because she recognizes going out night after night will wear down on her hands after a while.
the canary cry is inherited from dinah senior, but was dormant at the time of d's birth, leading dinah senior and her vigilante friends to believe that dinah just hadn't inherited it. it's activated...at some point in season 3 (like idk whenever she gets dosed with the vertigo) as a result of severe distress. she manages to keep it under wraps for a while, and only reveals it to the besties over in central city when she's worried it's about to start getting out of control.
regardless of whether or not she's working in the da's office, or at cnri, or as a florist/club singer/whatever, dinah maintains her bar membership. she likes to use it to take on pro bono cases from time to time, and it tends to be helpful when her friends get into legal trouble.
girlie does "die" in s4, but nothing is permanent (argus or what have u idk). she winds up healing and then training in a loa-type environment for a year in vietnam, before getting a bead on brian durlin being in gotham city and heading there to kill him (she actually puts him in prison, but u kno)

What’s this musician AU you’ve got here??
IM SO GLAD U ASKED
Essentially all of our blorbos are in various musical groups/solo acts. and its very fun
-Goggles is some sort of pop idol. Not unlike Callie + Marie except on his own
-Rider's a musical duet with his sister Cherry- they do a lot of punk rock stuff and also a lot of gay songs. Like. think Girl in Red but mixed with set it off and also songs about gay men and lesbians
-The S4 all together are a sort of anonymous band but they also have their own thing going on. While in the band, Army uses the alias Vixen, and outside of it he's an actor, singing in loads of musicals n shit
-Aloha, in the S4 band, is known as Siren. On his own, he's another pop star. While Goggles is more like. sweet happy songs, Aloha is the more sultry side. Think Chrissy Chalpeka (that how i spell their name?) or some of Lady Gaga's stuff
-Mask, in the S4 band, is known as Witch. Outside of it, she's a streamer who normally does like. average gamer things. But she sometimes produces her own music on stream. On occasion she sings but often times she'll just make the actual music
-Skull, in the S4 band, is known as Dragon. Outside of it, he sings a lot of folk and traditional Norse music. Like, the Oh Hellos mixed with the Crane Wives, mixed with SKALD
-Avi helps Skull make his music by playing the guitar. He's very good at it.
-Gloves is what happens when you mix Cosmo Sheldrake with Will Wood and add a touch of Cavetown to it
-Emperor is. something. Britney Spears but a manwhore i guess? best way to explain it
-Prince and Regent aren't singers but they both make music- just not what youd expect. Prince likes making a bunch of punk rock or just grunge music in general and Regent prefers more... bubblegum pop
-Vintage isnt a musician but he can play the harp and its a nice passtime for him

‘FOLLIES’ TRIVIA
Tumblr media
Sidney Guilaroff, Lucille Ball’s hair dresser, who takes responsibility for her famous ‘golden red’ for this movie, becoming her trademark color.
Tumblr media
Although they appear in different segments, this is the only feature film collaboration between “I Love Lucy co-stars" Lucille Ball and William Frawley. Coincidently, Frawley's character in this film shares a striking similarity with his iconic character of Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.” In this film he plays a money-hungry curmudgeon of a landlord, much like the show. In the above photo, he appears with director Minnelli and co-star Brice.
Tumblr media
The horse ridden by Lucille Ball is the Lone Ranger's Silver!
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball was actually fired by Ziegfeld from his road company production of Rio Rita in the 1930s.
Tumblr media
In February 1956, Lucy and Desi appeared on “MGM Parade” to promote their MGM film Forever Darling. The show also included footage of Lena Horne singing from Ziegfeld Follies.
Tumblr media
Lucy also played a showgirl in pink in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;E19) aired on February 21, 1955. The scene was inspired by Ziegfeld’s legendary stage shows featuring beautiful women wearing elaborate costumes navigating long staircases. To solidify the comparison, Ricky says he is going to a meeting with Mr. Minnelli. Vincente Minnelli was one of the directors of Ziegfeld Follies.
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo had previously cavorted around in a lampshade in the manner of a Ziegfeld girl in both the unaired pilot and “The Audition” (S1;E6).
Tumblr media
Ziegfeld Follies includes a sketch for Red Skelton called “When Television Comes” aka “Guzzler’s Gin” in which a (future) television spokesman gets increasingly sloshed on his product. This sketch was an obvious influence on Lucy’s Vitameatavegamin routine in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30) aired on May 5, 1952.
Tumblr media
Ziegfeld Girl Eve Whitney appeared on “I Love Lucy” episode “The Charm School” (ILL S3;E15). She used her own name for the character.
Tumblr media
The Telegraph Boy in "A Sweepstakes Ticket" Arthur Walsh - appeared on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined” (ILL S3;E11) as Arthur ‘King Cat’ Walsh. He teaches Lucy how to jitterbug.
Tumblr media
The first Judge in the “Pay the Two Dollars” James Crehan also played the Police Detective on “I Love Lucy in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5) first aired on October 31, 1955.
Tumblr media
Porky, a voice on the telephone in “Number Please” Peter Lawford, played “Password” against Lucille Ball on September 24, 1964.  At the time, Lawford was married to President Kennedy’s sister, Patricia. On November 26, 1968, Ball was a guest on “The Tonight Show” when Peter Lawford was sitting in for Johnny Carson.
Tumblr media
Chorus Boy Bert May appeared as a solo dancer on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and Tennessee Ernie Ford” (TLS S5;E21) in February 1967.
Tumblr media
In the dressing room, Lucy jokes with Fanny Brice, one of the funniest women in showbusiness.  This was the only time Ball and Brice collaborated and was Brice’s last film.
Tumblr media
Ziegfeld’s follies began on Broadway, so it was appropriate that the show featured past and future Broadway musical stars:
Lucille Ball ~ Wildcat (1960)
Carol Haney ~ The Pajama Game (1954)
Tommy Rall ~ Call Me Madame (1950)
Fanny Brice ~ The Ziegfeld Follies
Marion Bell ~ Brigadoon (1947)
Victor Moore ~ Anything Goes (1934)
There was a lot of material that was not filmed, but written and cast. Some of the original skits would have added “Lucy” performers Mickey Rooney, Ann Sothern, and Van Johnson to the cast.

The Masked Singer, S4 E1 Running Commentary (Season Premiere)
Season 4 of The Masked Singer is finally here, and as always I’m gonna give my thoughts and guesses on who each Mask might be. Only some of the season’s 16 Masks will be performing tonight. As always, I post my commentaries before I see any unmaskings, so this post will be spoiler-free (even if my guesses may seem like spoilers, they aren’t...I’ve just got a really good idea from the clues and the sounds of their voices to have a good guess as to who they are).
The Sun 🌞: I saw a flash of Mickey Mouse ears. Vocally, she sounds like she could be LeAnn Rimes. She wasn’t on the New Mickey Mouse Club, but she actually did do an “In Concert” special for the Disney Channel when she first rose to fame in the late 1990s. I’m going with LeAnn Rimes as my initial guess. I think the Madonna references are meant to throw us off. Or maybe she’s just a huge Madonna fan.
Giraffe 🦒: “Weakness: Door Frames” 😂. Seems to be an industry veteran...but not necessarily the entertainment industry. Doesn’t really dance and is mostly rapping, so I don’t think he’s an entertainer for a living. Maybe an entrepreneur or self-made man. It’s definitely not Garth Brooks, as Ken seems to think; I’d recognize his voice in a heartbeat. Jenny’s guess of Travis Barker makes a little more sense. He’s a musician, but not really known for singing. I’m stumped, but I’m gonna go with Travis Barker as my initial guess, because Jenny’s reasoning did make sense.
Popcorn 🍿: She’s got a New York accent. Sounds a little bit on the older side. I have no clue who this is, but it sure as shit ain’t Carol Baskin! I wasn’t quite getting Mary J. Blige vibes from her voice, but Mary J. Blige is the best guess I’ve got! Or maybe Barbra Streisand.
Dragon 🐉: I don’t know about the clues, but that voice, I believe, has got to be none other than DMX. When you grow up with songs like “Party Up”, you don’t forget that gruff cadence.
Snow Owls 🦉: The male half of this duo is very recognizable. I had to think a couple of times as to who he was, but once I took a second to process it, I realized it had to be none other than Clint Black. Now, his wife is a well known actress, but I had to look up to see whether or not she’s done any music as well; turns out she’s been recording music since the 1970s. I’m not very familiar with her voice, though. But since I believe this has to be a duo with a connection, I’m going with Clint Black and his wife, Lisa Hartman Black.

TWD 10x02: We Are The End of the World - Details
Okay, let's talk details. I’ll go through them chronologically.
***As always, spoilers abound below for 10x02. Don’t read until you’ve watched! You’ve been warned!***
We start with the woman in the car, which I talked about yesterday. I thought the blaring horn was a call back to the Wolves in S6. That’s interesting because this was about Alpha and Beta, and we think the Wolves were a foreshadow of the Whisperers. I can't help but wonder if some sort of loud noise or horn will figure and whatever happened to Beth after Coda.
Tumblr media
When Alpha meets Beta in the hospital, Lydia wants to wash the off the walker blood. Alpha asks, "Is there water?" He points to where she can find some, and she does. Because they’re in a hospital, this is yet another example of water being available at Grady or, if they’re a part of the helicopter people, then with the helicopter people. The point is, they'll be the ones with access to water.
When the two sisters are walking, gathering walkers with Beta, one of them closes her eyes and talks about how the sun feels different today, like it's burning into their skin.
Tumblr media
I kind of wondered if that might be a radiation reference, especially as they see the satellite fall in this episode. Her looking up the sky also reminded me vaguely of Daryl and Beth looking at the sky in the Inmates. This is where the sister says that she should have left her behind.
Tumblr media
We then see Alpha giving Lydia a bath. There are a lot of background things in the hospital that caught my eye. Mostly graffiti and posters. But a lot of them point to Beth dialogue. Some of them are simply about hope, others of them suggest “you are still alive,” “why am I still alive?” Etc. One of the posters has both the words “Still” and “Alone” on it. Ring any bells? 😉 Here are some if you want to study them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It took me a few times watching it to realize it was Beta who wrote all the words on the walls. We know that because “I am the end of the world” is written in several places. It’s also important to note that he contemplated suicide. Things like “End it all?” followed by “No, not now,” are seen in various places.
Tumblr media
Alpha picks up a can of tomatoes (perhaps tomato soup?) in the hallway. I've said before that tomatoes represent the state of the community. I think we see them here because Alpha and Beta are about to form a community together. This is the origin story of the Whisperers.
Something interesting happens. Beta is humming in the background. Alpha hears him and begins to hum as well. Beta doesn't like that. He stocks toward her and says, "Were you singing?" She answers, "I wouldn't call it that." He says, "Don't do it again."
So, while they didn’t say what his back story is (on TTD, Ryan Hurst seemed to suggest the country singer theory could be true) there is definitely a musical theme around him.
In terms of a parallel to Daryl, you could see it as him being uncomfortable with people singing because it reminds him of Beth. I started thinking about Daryl's, "I never," from the moonshine shock. One of the things he said is that he never sang out in public. We haven't really seen a fulfillment of that yet. But just as Alpha and Beta were sort of humming together right here, maybe we'll see Beth and Daryl sing together in some capacity in the future.
She also asks how he ended up at the hospital. He said he got into a tussle with the dead and they ran him out of his camp a few months ago. Again, I think that could be a Daryl parallel. In terms of ending up at the hospital in S5, it happened after walkers overran the prison. This is also when Beta says he likes the sound of the dead and it’s the only song he never wants to end.
Then we’re back to the two sisters rounding up walkers. The one who gave up her baby sees the walker with the baby carrier on it on its front and starts to cry. Something about the way she cried, the way she looked, reminded me of when Beth cried in Inmates.
Tumblr media
The more I thought about that, something occurred to me. I’m just gonna throw this possibility out there. I feel like Beth is going to go through an arc where she loses a baby. It may not be hers biologically. After all, with plenty of foreshadowing after taking care of other people's kids. (Such as Judith at the prison.)
Tumblr media
This woman who sacrificed her baby at Alpha’s behest has parallels to Beth. In that scene in Inmates, which this reminded me of, Beth actually was crying over the perceived death of a child. She thought the little shoes she saw belong to the kids they’d been tracking. She was actually wrong about that. They were tracking Lizzie and Mika, who were with Carol and Ty. But Beth and Daryl assumed the kids they been tracking were dead and the shoes belonged to them. She was literally crying of the loss of a child.
Tumblr media
There was that weird, creepy baby death thing around Denise in 6x14, and we know how big a proxy she was to Beth. We also know Connie lost a child at one point, and she’s being used as a Beth stand-in as well. I'm just saying we have a lot of evidence of this.
Back at the camp, Beta almost kills this woman for endangering them. Alpha shows her mercy, probably because she understands what it's like to abandon a child, because she abandoned Lydia.
Tumblr media
Then we see Alpha making a room for Lydia in the hospital. She takes her in a room that's used for psych patients and is therefore padded. Lydia asks about the pillows all over the walls. The sequence was actually very interesting. It got my thoughts spinning.
Tumblr media
First of all, Alpha offers Lydia her bunny and Lydia rejects it. Remember the bunny represents those who are weak. Specifically, those too weak to survive and who end up dead. (Lizzie killed the bunnies in the log in 4b, and then later killed Mika.) Lydia rejects the bunny says that she wants to be more like Alpha. That’s a mirror to Beth saying that she wants to change and become stronger. Alpha says she's glad to hear that, because if Lydia doesn't change, Alpha will eventually have to leave her behind.
In other words, a person must be strong enough to defend themselves, or else they get left behind. Definitely feels like a call back to Beth. Now, obviously it didn't go down that way with Beth and Daryl. He didn’t leave her behind because he thought she was weak. But we often like to say that Beth’s weakness died when she was shot and she’ll arise a much stronger person who can take care of herself. If nothing else, this is a reference to someone changing from being weak to being strong as well as being left behind, in the same sentence.
What struck me most about this sequence (along with something strange in the final scene) is the actual sleeping arrangement. It's about finding a bed for Lydia to sleep and feel safe. I know that sounds a little goofy, but it reminded me of something we saw back in S8 that has never been explained. When Daryl tries to escape the Sanctuary, he ran into Dwight's room. He ate peanut butter, changed his shirt, and opened the door into a secret room at the back of Dwight's quarters. No one was in there, but it looked like there was a bed with the pillow. Such a random detail, and it's never been explained. I was reminded of that part because there's an emphasis on pillows covering the walls.
Tumblr media
Near the end of the episode, where we see Alpha keeping a shrine to Lydia, along with her bunny, there’s what looks like a gigantic bird’s nest. It’s actually more square than round in shape, but it’s made with twigs and vines like a bird’s nest might be. I think it’s supposed to be a place Alpha created for Lydia to sleep in and be secure. So, I think this is a theme about finding a place for loved ones to sleep where they will feel safe. It's possible the hidden room in Dwight’s place was there for Sherry. I don't know if she ever actually used it, but he might've created in case she ever wanted to hide there.
Tumblr media
We can also relate this back directly to Beth and Daryl in the funeral home. Daryl laid down in the coffin saying, "this is the comfiest bed I've had in years." And while he laid in that “bed,” Beth sang to him, about laying in the lawn and being good. So it's about finding a place to lie down and sleep, feeling secure and safe with the people you're with. Because, by nature, everyone is vulnerable when they sleep.
Alpha tells Beta to send the baby’s mother to her in the “deep” place. I had to think about this one for a bit before I understood it’s significance. It's underground (sort of like a cave) and in darkness, so I knew it had to have symbolic significance. It was obvious that everyone thought Alpha would kill the baby’s mother, but, she didn't. She showed her mercy.
Tumblr media
I think we could perhaps relate it to Beth going into the darkness and emerging into the light. We saw this theme around her with light and darkness at Grady. She goes into the dark hallway just before being shot.
Tumblr media
Emerging into light at the end of the hallway represents her living. So, similarly, the baby’s mother goes into the darkness and faces death by Alpha’s hand. Mercifully, she comes back out again into the light and is given a second chance. Her sister even says, "Alpha showed you her grace?"
Tumblr media
At this point, we learn other whispers are also thinking about Hilltop and that it looked like a safe place and maybe they want to return. Alpha is already losing her pack.
We see Alpha and Beta killing walkers together in the hospital. They bond and she gives him the name of first Big Man, then Mr. B, and then just B. He asks what that make her. She says, “A.”
Tumblr media
She then proceeds to tell him about becoming the walkers. She says there are two kinds of people left in the world: those brave enough to walk with the dead, and everyone else. She tries to take off his mask, and he freaks out. He tells her leave at sunrise not to come back. Obviously, that doesn't happen.
So, a couple things about this. We’ve seen the A/B theme since S4. It's very obvious that Alpha and Beta are being defined this way in the plot. This isn’t just symbolism anymore. They’re calling themselves and each other A and B. Yes, we also saw that theme with the helicopter people who also used the terms A and B. For me, that suggests that perhaps the Whisperers are tied up with the helicopter people in some way. It also shows that the Whisperers are much more endgame than Negan ever was. Everyone made such a big deal about All Out War, but we’re seeing the fulfillment of Beth-related symbolism that’s been around since S4 much more with this group than we ever did with Negan.
It's also interesting that we don't see Beta’s face. Alpha takes off her skin mask all the time, but we've never seen Beta without his. I wonder why he wants to hide his face. Back when she asked how he got there, and he said that he tussled with the dead. She asked if that's what he wore the mask now. There's an implication there that maybe, just maybe, he has scars on his face.
Tumblr media
That would have some really interesting implications of true. Not only would it parallel him to Beth in a big way, but if Beth ever came into contact with Alpha and Beta, I almost think that they would be predisposed to like her, both because she's a survivor and also because of the scars. That might draw them both to her. At this point, Alpha and Lydia have seen Beta's face, but no one else has.
When the Whisperers see the satellite fall, the sister who lost her baby goes nuts and tries to kill Alpha. She dies because her sister betrays her to save Alpha.
Tumblr media
Alpha asks her if she regrets what she did. The sister essentially says no. (I don’t know if this will mean anything to you guys, but that was very Charles Manson.) Then Alpha said something super disturbing. "Like a lioness who smothers her own cub, we are strongest when we kill our own blood."
Now, obviously that's the opposite of what TF and most of us (hopefully) believe. It serves yet another antiparallel to Beth and TF in general. They try to save their own people and keep them alive at all costs. They believe that banding together through love and community is what makes them stronger. Alpha obviously believes the opposite.
Tumblr media
Then we reach the final sequence of the episode. There’s a lot going on here and I watched it multiple times, trying to catch everything. Lydia covers herself in walker guts. She seemed to want to find a walker and prove to her mom that she could be strong. So her mother wouldn’t leave her behind.
Of course everything goes down where Alpha kills Beta’s friend, and Lydia comes out, saying she was strong. Alpha hugs her and says she did a good job and was very strong.
Tumblr media
Then she turns to Beta and says some really interesting things. She says, "You are not broken. You were made for this." Beth said that exact same thing to Daryl in Still. "It's like you were made for how things are now.”
Alpha also says, "Stay with me and you'll never be alone." I don’t think Daryl said exactly that Beth, but I remember that he did say it to Bob. "You're not alone anymore. You never will be again." And Bob was a Beth proxy.
Tumblr media
After watching it several times, what strikes me is the parallel to Beth and Daryl. While the actual events are different, Alpha and Beta basically see one another at their most vulnerable. In true states of anger and grief. Alpha over Lydia in the current timeline and Beta over the loss of his friend in the flashback. And that’s exactly what Still was for Beth and Daryl.
Beta then started chanting, "I am the end of the world. I am the end of the world." This is part of the Alpha and Omega theme. Alpha is, um, named Alpha, which means the first or the beginning. Then we have Beta saying he's the end of the world. Omega is another term for the end.
Tumblr media
This is super-intriguing to me and I’ll have to think about it more. Maybe revisit the Alpha/Omega theme. Because a the two instances that always jump to mind for me of the Alpha/Omega theme are 1) when Abraham said it to Sasha in the flashback in 7x16. And he said, “Alpha to Omega, Battlefield to Beach.” (paraphrasing there, btw.) Well, they’re about to enter a war with the Whisperers, and they were training on the beach in 10x01, so it all feels very relevant. 2) Via Paula’s group in 6x13. And that episode a gazillion, ridiculously obvious references to Beth and Grady. Just saying.
Alpha says, “We’re the end of the world.” Beta says he can't leave his friend. Alpha says he won’t have to and gives him her knife. It’s then that we learn that the skin mask Beta wears around once belonged to his best friend. Just when you think these people can’t get any more twisted, right?
This is why I loved this episode so much. Creepy? Oh yeah. Twisted? Absolutely. But also fascinating and fantastic. On TTD, YNB said she wasn’t a fan of villains. Yeah, I am. I’m totally obsessed with their psychology. So I totally geeked out about the fabulousness of this episode.
But I digress. We then return to the current timeline, where Beta finds Alpha in her special little grove. As they talk, he comes to realize she didn't actually kill Lydia and Lydia is still alive. This is where we see the giant bird’s nest/bed. So, we have a connection to the bird theme here, with Alpha playing mother bird and wanting to protect her young. She’s created a bed for Lydia to feel safe in.
Tumblr media
At one point, Beta says, “she’s GONE, Alpha.” That’s before Alpha admits she lied about killing Lydia. So we have yet another example of something thinking someone is dead, & saying she’s “gone,” when really, she’s alive and well in some other place.
Alpha gets upset about Lydia and starts to cry. (Note that Beta is the only one allowed to see her cry and live.) He reaches his hand out to her and she takes it. He basically calms her down and brings her back to herself.
Tumblr media
He tells her that there was smoke on the horizon. Alpha says it might be “the enemy” which means TF, and that they have to teach them a lesson and let the pack watch. That’s how she’ll ensure her pack’s loyalty to her. Not unlike Negan’s old tactics.
It's important to note that she was planning on attacking TF even before she realized they’d crossed the border. It's really not about her looking up and seeing Carol standing there at the end.
Tumblr media
Then we see Alpha and Beta intertwine fingers. (Fascinating but creepy romance vibe.)
I said this was their Still/Alone episode. Think about all the things I’ve laid out here. It happened in a hospital. There was a bunch of Beth and Daryl dialogue. The words “still” and “alone” were literally written on the wall! And they forced a deep (albeit twisted) connection. When they were killing the walkers that got into the hospital, Alpha says, "I like kill with you." When she starts gutting the walkers, he says, "you're different," which really ought to be an insult, but you can tell he's drowned her because of that.
Tumblr media
So at the end, they intertwine fingers, which always represents romantic love in TTD  and say their little mantra.
"We walk in darkness, we are free.
We bathe in blood, we are free.
We love nothing, we are free.
We fear nothing, we are free.
We need no words, we are free.
We embrace all death, we are free.
This is the end of the world. Now is the world. We are the end of the world."
This is twisted and heavy stuff, guys. This satanic little chant also brings me back to the Alpha and Omega theme. Like I said, I feel like Whispers are much more endgame than Negan ever was. Think of it this way. If the helicopter people have been around since the beginning (and they have been), and the Whisperers are tied up with them, then the “beginning” and the “end” makes sense here, right? I’ve even considered that maybe the helicopter people are the ones who caused or released the virus to begin with, whether by accident or on purpose. No idea if that’s true. It’s just something I’ve considered. But TWD is big on story arcs where the end mirrors the beginning, so this is a theme, a motif, and a pattern in the show.
Two more short notes. I’m not sure why Alpha doesn’t realize that making war on TF means coming face to face with Lydia again. She’s lying to her people about killing Lydia, and if they find out she’s lying (and they surely will) that will make them less loyal to her. Might be her undoing.
Also, just a correction. I said yesterday that Beta didn’t cry when his friend died. Upon watching it again, he actually does. I missed it the first time. You can’t see it because of the mask but you can hear him sobbing. Just wanted to correct myself on that.
Again, just a really fabulous and fascinating episode. I’ve watched it like three times and I totally want to watch it again.

Liberace (Himself) was born Władziu Valentino Liberace in 1919.  A piano prodigy, he was the son of working-class immigrants, and enjoyed a career spanning four decades of concerts, recordings, television, motion pictures, and endorsements. At the height of his fame, from the 1950s to the 1970s, Liberace was the highest-paid entertainer in the world, with established residencies in Las Vegas, and an international touring schedule.
Tumblr media
Liberace (known informally as ‘Lee’) embraced a lifestyle of flamboyant excess both on and off stage, acquiring the sobriquet "Mr. Showmanship." Prior to this episode, his only appearance with Lucille Ball was the musical film Best Foot Forward (1943). He died at age 67 after a battle with HIV/AIDS.
Tumblr media
Ben Wrigley (Williams, Liberace's Butler) was a British actor who appeared in My Fair Lady (1964) and Bednobs and Broomsticks (1971). He previously appeared as a ticket agent in “Lucy Flies to London” (TLS S5;E6).  This is the first of his three episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Paul Winchell (Carlo, Liberace's Tailor) previously played himself in“Lucy and Paul Winchell” (TLS S5;E4). He was born Paul Wilchinsky in 1922. Coming into the public eye in 1948, he became one of the most famous ventriloquists since Edgar Bergen. He hosted the enormously popular children’s television show “Winchell-Mahoney Time” (1964-68) in which he shared the spotlight with Jerry Mahoney, one of his most popular characters. He played Doc Putnam in “Main Street U.S.A.” (TLS S5;17) and “Lucy Puts Main Street on the Map” (TLS S5;E18). This is the second of his two episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”  He died in 2005.
Winchell uses an Italian accent for this character.

This is the first episode of the new year and the new decade.
Tumblr media
The 1970s will see the end of “Here's Lucy” in 1974, as well as Lucille Ball's return to the silver screen in Mame that same year.  In 1971, Lucie Arnaz will wed Phil Vandervort and Desi Arnaz Jr. made his big screen debut in Red Sky at Morning.  At the end of the decade, Lucie Arnaz made her Broadway debut in They're Playing Our Song (1979).
Tumblr media
The date this episode was first aired (January 5, 1970) ABC premiered a new daytime drama called All My Children. Philip Amelio, who played Lucy’s grandson on “Life With Lucy”, appeared on the sudser in 1988. It ceased production in 2013.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Liberace brought $50,000 worth of his spectacular wardrobe to the set, and Lucille Ball hired a round-the-clock security guard to ensure its safety. The tuxedo jacket that lights up in the dark made its debut on this show; Liberace will use it in his act for the rest of his life.
Tumblr media
In the 2013 HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra, an aging Liberace (Michael Douglas) compares his domestic life with partner Scott Thorson (Matt Damon) to an old sitcom. Scott protests: “Why am I the Lucy?”  Douglas' father Kirk made a wordless cameo appearance on a 1966 episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Professor Harkens gave Craig the African mask.
Tumblr media
Lucy recalls her initiation into ‘The Swingers’ in high school.  The double entendre of 'swinging' is quickly cleared up by Lucy saying she was in a trapeze club!  For her initiation, she had to get an autographed photo of Rudy Vallee. Rudy Vallee was a singer popular in the 1920s and '30s who made a guest appearance on the first episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” in 1957.  He will guest star as himself during season 3 of “Here's Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Kim guesses that Craig may have to retrieve an item from Engelbert Humperdinck. Lucy replies “What's an Engelbert Dumperhinck?”  Engelbert Humperdinck is an English pop singer acclaimed as one of the finest middle-of-the-road balladeers around. In 1969 he released two albums and had three hit singles. That same year he was the first guest on “The Liberace Show”.
Tumblr media
In Liberace's mansion, he enters and sits at a glass-lid Baldwin grand piano and plays Chopin's “Military Polonaise” (Opus 40, #1) composed in 1838.
Tumblr media
When Liberace tries on the light-up jacket, he says “This'll really turn them on in Pasadena!”  He could be referring to his senior citizen female fans. There was a popular song at the time titled “Little Old Lady From Pasadena.” Later in the episode we learn that the candelabra loaned to Craig was a gift from a Senior Citizen group.
Tumblr media
In a retrospectively ironic line, Liberace says about his many candelabras: “I've got closets full of them.” Although Liberace was flamboyant, his sexual orientation was never discussed publicly (he was ‘in the closet’) until later in his life.  When 17 year-old Craig and Liberace are alone (and Craig's shirt is unbuttoned to the navel) it is difficult not to think of Liberace's romance with 18 year-old Scott Thorson (inset), who later sued the entertainer in America's first same-sex palimony case.
At home, Craig gets a phone call from Bill. This is probably a nod to Desi Arnaz Jr.'s friend and band mate Billy Hinsche.
Tumblr media
Answering the front door, Kim says “It's probably Craig with his arms loaded down with that something he had to get from a big star.” Lucy replies: “Maybe he's got his arms full of Jackie Gleason.”  This is a quick joke about comedy star Jackie Gleason's weight.  Gleason did a cameo as Ralph Kramden in the second episode of “Here's Lucy” (above).
Tumblr media
Harry is reminded that in college he underwent initiation into the fraternity Delta Delta Tau. The joke comes when he gives says their initials – DDT. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is a chemical used as an insecticide. In the late 1960s and early ‘70s DDT was frequently in the news regarding its harmful effects on humans, wildlife, and the environment.  DDT was eventually banned.
Tumblr media
The candelabra is inscribed “To Liberace. From his Senior Citizen Fan Club in Pismo Beach.” Along with Cucagmonga, Pismo Beach was often used as a punch-line for jokes about California. It was mentioned in “Lucy Goes on Strike” (S1;E16). Pismo Beach is one of the locations Lucy and Ethel want to visit before returning to New York in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;E18).
Tumblr media
On their way to return the candelabra to Liberace, Harry holds it forth and says “Lead, kindly light.”  “Lead, Kindly Light” is a hymn with words written in 1833 by John Henry Newman as a poem titled "The Pillar of Cloud."
Tumblr media
Sneaking into Liberace's mansion through the back door, Harry's shoes squeak! Lucy says “You'd sure be a goofball on 'Mission: Impossible.’”  The Desilu TV spy show “Mission: Impossible” has been a source of humor for “Here's Lucy,” which even did a whole episode parodying the show: “Lucy's Impossible Mission” (S1;E6, above).
Tumblr media
Harry and Lucy sing while Liberace plays "By the Light of the Silvery Moon,” a song written in 1909 by Gus Edwards and Edward Madden. Lucy says she and Harry first performed the number at the Kiwanis Capers.
Tumblr media
When Lucy suggests that Liberace use the whole family on his TV special, Liberace remarks “You're about 83 short of the King Family.” The King Family was a family musical group that had great success on records and television in the 1960s. They had a TV show on ABC that ran until 1969.
As the big finale, everyone sings and dances to "I'll Be Seeing You," a song written by Sammy Fain and Irving Kahal in 1938. It was inserted into the Broadway musical Right This Way, which closed after just  fifteen performances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucy and Lee shared the covers of many periodicals of the 1950s. Both had top-rated television programs and were instantly identifiable figures and names. Nearly 20 years later, both are still considered show business royalty.
Tumblr media
Offscreen, Lucy and Desi socialize with Liberace during the height of their fame.
Tumblr media
At the start of the episode, Craig enters wearing an African mask.  The moment is similar to when Ricky Ricardo researched African masks for his Voodoo act during “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16). The scene also begins the 1953 episode. Ricky Ricardo also briefly wore an African mask in “Cuban Pals” (ILL S1;E28) before singing “Similau.”
Tumblr media
Liberace tells Craig not to worry about returning the candelabra as he has a lot of them. Craig replies: “If Los Angeles ever had a black out – you could light the whole city.” This echoes when Liberace was first mentioned by Lucy Ricardo in “The Diner” (ILL S3;E25) in 1954.
LUCY RICARDO: (about Ricky’s bad mood): “Everything went wrong down at the club last night. Right in the middle of his big number, the lights went out all over the whole neighborhood. Everybody got up and, and left and went into the nightclub across the street.” ETHEL MERTZ: “How’d they manage without electricity?” LUCY RICARDO: “Liberace was playing there.  He does his show by candlelight.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Club Dance” (S3;E25) included the February 26, 1954 issue of TV Guide with Liberace (and a candelabra) on the cover. It was one of many used as set dressing for a corner news stand.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy’s Show-Biz Swan Song” (ILL S2;E12) Lucy and Ethel sing “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” and wangles her way into performing with a barbershop quartet.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy’s Barbershop Quartet” (TLS S1;E19) Lucy Carmichael and Vivian Bagley sing “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” and wangles her way into performing with a barbershop quartet.
Tumblr media
Craig's collectibles are no doubt supplied by prop master Kenneth Westcott from the Desilu props supply.  It is likely that all of the items were used in some television program, but the one most recognizable is the female ship's figurehead. It was last seen in the background of the Sunset Strip beatnik hangout in “Viv Visits Lucy” (TLS S5;E15).
Tumblr media
In “Lucy and the Countess Have a Horse Guest” (TLS S4;E6), Lucy Carmichael tells the Countess (aka her old chum Rosie) that since moving to Hollywood she has met Lassie’s hairdresser, the man who used to dry off Lloyd Bridges, and Liberace’s dentist. Liberace was well known for his continual smile.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Dates Dean Martin” (TLS S4;E21) Lucy Carmichael admires (and later wears) a sequined top once worn by Audrey Hepburn. Dean Martin says “The last time I saw anything that fancy was on Liberace.”  In “Lucy and Liberace” Harry admires and tries on Liberace’s red sequined jacket.
Tumblr media
Math Fail!  Liberace says that the Carters are 83 short of the King Family. There were 39 members of the King family, ranging in age from 7 months to 79 years, who appeared on their television show.  Liberace is exaggerating by 48 Kings!
Tumblr media
Where the (Marble) Floor Ends! In the living room scene the camera pulls back to far and reveals the soundstage cement floor.  When this happens in Liberace's mansion, the tape spike marks are clearly visible for centering of the dance numbers and camera positions.
Sitcom Logic Alert! The ending of the episode ditches all pretense of reality and turns into a musical performance for the studio audience, including Liberace waving to the audience as he exits – stage right!  It is jarring and a sign that – once again - “Here's Lucy” is unsure of its identity.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Liberace” rates 3 Paper Hearts out of 5
Let's face it – even playing himself Liberace is a pretty mediocre actor, so this episode could never be more than a showcase for his talent and opulent wardrobe on which is hung a paper thin plot. The worst thing about the episode is the complete demolishing of the fourth wall during the final number. Shameless, really.

LUCY AND HARRY’S TONSILS
S2;E5 ~ October 20, 1969
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Directed by George Marshall ~ Written by Milt Josefsberg and Ray Singer
Synopsis
When Harry gets tonsillitis, he dreads going into the hospital and wants to recuperate at home. - until a sexy night nurse (Paula Stewart) comes on duty.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carter), Gale Gordon (Harrison Otis Carter), Lucie Arnaz (Kim Carter), Desi Arnaz Jr. (Craig Carter)
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Mary Wickes (Nurse Hurlow) was one of Lucille Ball’s closest friends and at one time, a neighbor. She made a memorable appearances on “I Love Lucy” as ballet mistress Madame Lamond in “The Ballet” (ILL S1;E19). In her initial “Lucy Show” appearances her characters name was Frances, but she then made four more as a variety of characters for a total of 8 episodes. This is the third of her 9 appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” Their final collaboration on screen was “Lucy Calls the President” in 1977. A wisecracking nurse is a familiar role to Wickes, who created the role of Nurse Preen on Broadway in 1939's The Man Who Came to Dinner and also did the 1942 film version (inset photo) and a 1972 TV adaptation.
The surname Hurlow was recently used as the name of the driving instructor (Jack Gilford) in “Lucy Helps Craig Get a Driver's License” (S1;E24), also written by Josefsberg and Singer.
Tumblr media
Jack Collins (Mr. Phillips) previously appeared in “Lucy's Impossible Mission” (S1;E6) as well as the final two episodes of “The Lucy Show.”  He played Russel Slater on “Dallas” from 1982 to 1987. This is the second of his six appearances on “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Adele Claire (Nurse Whitton) makes the first of her two appearances on the series. She will also be seen in “Lucy and Jim Bailey” (S5;E9).
The character is never referred to by name in the dialogue.
Tumblr media
Paula Stewart (Nurse Dean) appeared as Janie, Lucille Ball's sister, in the Broadway musical Wildcat (1960). It was the fourth of her six Broadway musicals between 1951 and 1965.  This is her only series television appearance opposite Lucille Ball. In 2017, she published a memoir titled Lucy Loved Me, about her friendship with Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
This is the first multi-camera show with a studio audience of season 2, after the series' 4-part road trip shot on location.
This is the only time on “Here's Lucy” where Harry reveals his age, 51, although because Lucy and Nurse Hurlow both roll their eyes, he is probably lying.  In reality, Gale Gordon was 63.
Tumblr media
The “Here's Lucy” crew played a prank on Gale Gordon. He expected the legs on the hospital bed to break, but instead the special effects crew rigged the bed to snap shut, forcing him to be folded in half. Although he masks his laughter, Gordon continued with the scene. Lucy and the kids look mildly amused for a moment.
Both Kim and Craig mention that they have had their tonsils out. Tonsillitis can be more serious in adults than young people, so Harry is not completely off-base to be worried.
Craig jokes that Uncle Harry is covered under Medicare. Medicare insurance was only a few years old at the time, having been signed into law by President Johnson in 1965.  Benefits were not available until a person was 65.
Dr. Kurtzman is Harry's surgeon; Dr. Bodner is a psychiatrist Lucy telephones on his behalf. In real life, Dr. Sam Kurtzman was a comedy writer who worked with writer Milt Josefsberg for Bob Hope. Dr. Henry Bodner was the name of Josefsberg's urologist.
Tumblr media
Mr. Phillips is smoking a cigar in the hospital waiting room. Cigars were traditionally given to and smoked by new fathers. In 1991 the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) announced tobacco control standards for accredited American hospitals which mandated that they go smoke-free by the end of 1993.
In a brilliant scene of comic writing, Mr. Phillips thinks Harry is an expectant father and Harry thinks Mr. Phillips is there for a tonsillectomy.  They talk at cross purposes and confusion abounds!
Lucille Ball loved charades and pantomime, so it makes sense that when Harry can't speak, he resorts to a bedside game of charades. Every “Lucy” sitcom has included this bit of comic fun – some more than once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In "Lucy Plays Florence Nightingale” (TLS S2;E14) Mr. Mooney (Gale Gordon) was also the victim of Lucy and a tricky hospital bed.
Tumblr media
Lucy also triggers a hospital bed to fold up with a patient (Jan Murray) inside it in “Lucy and the Soap Opera” (TLS S4;E19).
Tumblr media
Harry acts like a bigger baby than Little Ricky when had his tonsils out in “Nursery School” (ILL S5;E9).
Tumblr media
Harry is practically incoherent when giving the admitting nurse his information, just as Ricky Ricardo was in “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16). Coincidentally, that episode aired the same day Desi Jr. was born!
Tumblr media
Expectant father Mr. Phillips (having his third child) is similar to the character of Mr. Stanley (who is having his ninth – all girls!), also seen in “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16).  Mr. Stanley was played by Charles Lane.  The scenes were inspired by one of Lucille Ball’s early films, Carnival (1935) starring Jimmy Durante.
Tumblr media
GPS! Harry tells Nurse Hurlow his address as 4863 Valley Lawn Drive, which in future episodes Lucy will claim as her own address.
Allergy Season? Harry is supposedly allergic to flowers, but in a season one episode, Lucy brings flowers to the office to butter up Harry for a raise.
Tumblr media
Where The Floor Ends! When the camera pulls back in Harry's living room, viewers see where the wall to wall carpeting meets the concrete stage floor. This is a common era on all “Lucy” sitcoms.
Resume Trouble! Harry's will leaves Lucy 5,000 aspirin bottles she's caused him to empty over the past two years. At the start of the series, it was established that Lucy's worked for Harry for two years, then a few months later, it was said to be three, now it is back to two!
Tumblr media
Capper! Nurse Dean wears a different style cap than the other two nurses, probably in order to appear more feminine and show off more of her sexy hairstyle.
Title Trouble! The title follows the usual “Lucy and ____” format, but in this case it sounds like both Lucy and Harry have tonsillitis.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Harry’s Tonsils” rates 3 Paper Hearts out of 5
This episode gives Gale Gordon a lot to do, with very little of it bluster. Some of it, however, is uncharacteristic of Harry Carter. Faced with having to have his tonsils out, he behaves as if it is a death sentence, complete with the reading of his will. Later, he appears to be sexually aroused by the night nurse, in a comic way, of course. The broad comedy here takes the sting out of the usually forbidden subject matter.
