“In Xadia, many elves use ruiam to perform magic from their Arcanum. They may add or take away marks from their bodies. But…” Rayla placed a finger on her chin in thought. “Some elves truly want these marks to be theirs forever, like they are a part of themselves. So they go to a special craftself to give them everlasting runes on their skin….”
Callum’s eyes lit up. He turned to face Rayla as he asked, “A spell?”
“Not a spell,” responded the Moonshadow elf. “It’s an art form, and the runes are etched on the skin, permanently.” She rubbed Callum’s bare appendage, as if to picture the lasting marks there. “There was an old elf in Silvergrove who practiced this ancient form. Ethari forged the tools for him, in fact.”
Callum seemed to be putting the pieces together in his mind. As they fell into place, Rayla noticed how hopeful he looked, like a bantherhound being offered a meaty treat. His childlike wonder made Rayla’s toes tingle with delight.
“Do you think…he would work on a human?” Callum asked with genuine curiosity.
“I don’t know,” Rayla countered honestly, “I can visit the Crow Master tomorrow, and send a message to Silvergrove for Ethari - if he’s got that mystical Xadian bird, and if Ethari can even read my message, with me being a Ghost and all. But Callum,” the elf paused, and took his hands within her own. The young mage’s eyes bored into Rayla’s features as she gave her warning. “I’ve never had it done before. And something so permanent…what if it’s quite painful? Are you sure this is something you want?”
At this, Callum dropped her hands and stood up. He steadied himself and gazed out at the moon, reminiscent of Rayla’s own actions just moments before. His sincerity and maturity…it nearly took Rayla’s breath away. For a moment, she could envision the strong, powerful mage that he was destined to be.
Callum’s next words were adamant. “We need all the help we can get to defeat Aaravos,” he quietly acknowledged. “And I’ve been drawing these marks for nearly three years. They work. They help.” He turned to look at Rayla deep in her eyes, and as the young man approached, Rayla once again placed her own hands on his undressed biceps. Again, she visualized the strong, clean outline of everlasting marks.
“When Aaravos controlled me like a puppet, back at the Storm Spire…Rayla, I can’t tell you how it felt, to be completely out of control. I want to do something that is my own. Make my own decision about my body…”
Callum resolutely stared out the window. “Yes, Rayla. I’m sure.”
A new story! Written by me! Banner illustrated by @numptypylon!
Read about Callum's journey getting his runes tattooed. It's such a weird brainchild of mine and I dig it.
As always, reblogs appreciated!

nightingale discovers warhammer 40k (1/???)
I like to think I’m at least marginally funny, so I was thinking I would live tweet my reactions, thoughts and favourite moments as a little record as I descend into the warhammer rabbit hole ! this first post will be all the stuff from the past half week, which is my very first venture into warhammer
knew jack about warhammer 40k until approx a week ago. saw a gif of n'kari, thought 'would', was horrified at myself, thought to myself "nightingale are you a monsterfucker or not, fucking commit to it, coward" and now i'm here
funniest moment is still blue archive ost playing over my iron warriors research. for those unaware blue archive is an anime style game where you collect adorable girls who wield military assault weaponry
that oldhammer thing about horus railing fulgrim into following chaos lives in my head rent free (thank you @/chemos-factories) because it's just an 18+ doujinshi premise. i can see the words on the dlsite page. subtitled "battle brother, what are you doing?!" and it's called some shit like "it's not like i gangbanged my brother into following a chaos god" "the elder brother-like one" or "domestic spacemarine" wait domestic girlfriend isn't actually 18+ is it
please tell me someone understands my "the elder brother like one" reference because it seems like something right up the slaaneshi alley
are the ultramarines just space versions of garen from league of legends or is my gut instinct wrong
sanguinius and fulgrim are still the sexiest primarchs to me. and yes i'm still pretending that the primarchs all went to family therapy and did Not all try to kill each other. i'm coping.
i rescind my previous statement about the night lords, wherein i said "the night lords are like if someone looked at a list of felonies and said 'all of them'." i am not rescinding this because it's wrong, but because it was an understatement
more correctly the night lords are like "if someone looked at the geneva convention and turned it into a checklist."
re: fabius bile. first of all, sure, a fulgrim clone is insane, but i'm hardly even surprised. of course. of fucking course. more importantly- really? fabius bile??? like wow i WONDER what hes like with a name like that
speaking of crazy names, 'ferrus manus'??? i have been informed that yes, 'ferrus manus', literally 'iron hand', leads his legion, the 'iron hands', from the 'fist of iron.' the word 'iron' is starting to not look like a word to me

Manus. Pluma. Volantus. Chapter 2.
Eye widening, Artifas stared down at the drawing, near dumbfounded. A peculiar sound - like a cross between a sigh and an exhale - breaks from his lips.
The old elf’s glance was caught by the silhouette of a skywing elf. It took a moment for him to find his voice.
“Ibis,” Artifas whispered. Rayla and Callum look at each other, understanding Artifas’ unspoken anguish.
Callum, bravely, climbed a single step closer. “Yes. It’s Ibis. He was our friend,” the mage responded, equally as soft and mournful. “Ibis was my first teacher of the Sky Arcanum. Before I studied magic on my own…before I was High Mage of Katolis, Ibis taught me everything he could, even though I was only human.” At this, Callum placed a hand on the page, tracing over the familiar lines. “He’s the reason why I’m here. Ibis is the one who taught me - - ”
“ Manus. Pluma. Volantis ,” finished Artifas.
“That’s right,” whispered Callum. In the silence, Rayla can see that the two - despite their differences - shared a poignant moment. A similar expression graced each other's features.
Artifas spoke once more, breaking the silence. “Ibis, himself, came to me years ago with a similar request.
“Not all Skywing Elves possess wings, as you may know. And yet,” the craftself stopped in thought, contemplating his next words, “Ibis was one who learned to do the near-impossible. He truly connected to the Arcanum, and solved the secret of flight.” Artifas’ sharp, clear eyes studied Callum, as if truly looking at him for the first time. “Afterwards, Ibis came to me, and sought my work to deepen his connection. Etching his runes was the honor of a lifetime.” Once again, there was a lull, and Rayla could almost see a distinct sheen in the old elf’s eyes. “When I heard about how Ibis valiantly fought and fell against the dark arts, it sickened me. I want my work to be immortal - to live beyond my time on this planet…
“Truly, he was taken too soon.”
