🐾HAPPY 30th ANNIVERSARY TO THE LION KING!!!🐾
Tumblr media
This movie has been with me my entire life. It was the first film my parents took me to see in theaters. I used to play out the entire movie, word-for-word (even the songs), with my toys of the characters. I can still quote most of the movie, from beginning to end. I have seen the live Broadway version in person (and it was incredibly beautiful!). I was so pleased when it re-released in theaters in 3D, and had to go see it. I adore its sequel as well. The songs will forever live rent free in my brain.
Happy 30th to this amazing film that has touched so many hearts, including mine! 🥹

Holy shit am I glad this is done. This thing took days.
Anyway years ago I made a drawing called Ode to Broadway featuring a bunch of musicals I love and I decided to redo it, this time drawn digitally and with more musicals added in (I also changed the name to Ode to Musicals because not all of these have stage adaptations).
The musicals featured here are: The Sound of Music, Singin' in the Rain, The Lion King, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Annie, La La Land, Hairspray, Cabaret, Chicago, Grease, The Wizard of Oz, Hamilton, Cats, The Producers, The Greatest Showman, The Music Man, Moulin Rouge, Fiddler on the Roof, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story and Little Shop of Horrors.
Now when I got to West Side Story I had a dilemma: do I do the original film or the remake? Because amazingly, Steven Spielberg did something unbelievable: made a remake to an already perfect classic film and said remake was also absolute perfection. Nonetheless I decided to go with the original.
Two musicals I wanted to include but didn't are Rent and In the Heights just because I couldn't think of a way to fit them in.
Also I didn't want to add any animated musicals in, so that's why there's nothing from Disney for example (except for the Broadway adaptation of The Lion King, of course).
I also didn't want actors to appear twice in this, which is why Mary Poppins isn't here even though I would've loved to add it because I already have Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music here. Same reason I only chose one of Jacques Demy's musicals, because Catherine Deneuve also stars in The Young Girls of Rochefort and Donkey Skin.

While I love Brother Bear and I'm okay with the fact that it wasn't a musical, but a part of me will always be mildly peeved that they cast Jason Raize in a Disney movie where he DIDN'T SING!

I just found the most valuable and awesome addition to my Broadway collection! Everyone who knows me knows that I love Broadway and The Lion King, so I obviously had to get this when I saw it in Goodwill

With successful Broadway shows closing more and more frequently, it makes me wonder how long Hamilton would last on Broadway if it opened this year- or how long Back to the Future would’ve lasted if it opened in 2016. Makes ya think.

It's time for a showdown of the winners (and closest runners up) of all my Tony-winners-by-decade polls, or as I like to call it...
Previous closed polls: 50s - 60s - 70s - 80s - 90s - 00s - 10s
And for bonus points, in the tags put which shows you're angriest/most surprised didn't win for their respective decades

My love for The Lion King reigns supreme. I was listening to Shadowland again last night and just needed to write this short story. Set during the night when Nala leaves the Pride Lands to look for help.
