Some recs for adult animation I enjoy:
People always seem to think I only watch kids' shows, so here's a list of animated television shows I adore, that were all made with adults in mind:
King of the Hill - Genuinely didn't think I'd like it, but I actually really love it? I expected something that was basically just The Simpsons or Family Guy, but got a surprising amount of emotional depth from the main cast. Bobby Hill is my son boy.
Futurama - I am legally obligated to list Futurama. I have watched the entire series so many fucking times. I'm going to watch the reboot and we all know it.
Disenchantment - It's more than just "Futurama medieval fantasy" but tonally, they are pretty similar. I enjoy it immensely. Bean is a #bicon, and that's fucking canon <3
Samurai Jack - The original show aired as a kids' show, but the revival apparently put it into the adult category. I haven't gotten that far yet, but holy shit, it's so good so far. Even the "kids' show" part is pretty mature, imho.
Bob's Burgers - I fucking love Bob's Burgers. I need to catch up on the more recent seasons. A sitcom that DOESN'T have parents who clearly hate each other? Whaaaat?
Harley Quinn - I'm not caught up, and there are aspects I have critiques of, but overall, it's been fun as fuck. I LOVE this interpretation of Ivy so fucking much.
Metalocalypse - My dad's a metal musician, so this was on in my house all the time when I was a teenager. I haven't watched it in *years* but I still reference the early seasons in conversation constantly. The Duncan Hills will wake you, motherfuckers.
Big Mouth/Human Resources - They are better than you think they are, and the "ugly style" reminds me of classic Klasky-Csupo. Compare it to Rugrats and tell me it doesn't have similar caricature styles. Story-wise, it nails the exact blend of panicked awkwardness I felt as a disaster tween, it has SO MANY queer characters. They dramatically improved on their more problematic aspects after getting called on it in seasons 1 and 2. And Human Resources made me sob like a little baby in the episode with Kieth from Grief.
BoJack Horseman - Starts off as a goofy gross-out humor sitcom but very quickly becomes a serious drama. Incredibly heavy and dark, but holy shit the catharsis. Delves into a lot of musings about morality, celebrity culture and Hollywood, generational trauma, and the perpetuation of cycles.
Tuca & Bertie - Goofy slice-of-life about characters navigating their 30s. Lots of musings about family, trauma, sexual abuse, queer dating in your 30s, friendship, and trying to survive it all. I relate so fucking much to the main cast.
Magical Girl Friendship Squad - It's a magical girl cartoon about milennials. Their magical girl weapons are birth control pills and a bong. It's fucking amazing. I'm really sad nobody else seems to have heard of it. :(
Little Demon - Sitcom about the Devil's daughter. Unsure if it's going to get a season 2, since it's about to get taken completely off of Hulu. Still worth watching if you can, because it's so fucking good. Centers on a teenage girl navigating Being A Teenage Girl while also dealing with her dad being the Devil and her mom being a traumatized mess who's figuring her own shit out.
Q-Force - The advertising did this show so fucking dirty. It was genuinely fucking funny, and it was clearly made with love. This isn't straight people making fun of us, this is queer people making queer comedy. Watch it.
Arcane - Arcane's politics are all over the place and I am in my "Silco Was Right" corner, which is right next to the "Magneto Was Right" clubhouse. But goddamn, the animation is gorgeous and the story is intense.
The Legend of Vox Machina - I haven't watched Critical Role, so I can say with confidence that this show is fucking amazing even if you have zero interest in the original gameplay streams. Fantasy animation for grownups, where they can show blood and titties, my beloved. <3

Onward II Exandria: Sir Barley and Sir Ian and The Legend of Vox Machina' (aka 'Onward to Critical Role')
SYNOPSIS: The two teenage elf brothers - Ian and Barley from Disney/Pixar's 'Onward' - are back! This time, swords and sorcery just got real as they've been crossover to the world of 'Critical Role', full of real magic, real epic adventures, and real wizards, bards, and no modern technology!
Life's still full of magic and wonder for Ian and Barley Lightfoot in the city of New Mushroomton after their epic, extraordinary journey to bring back their late father. Now the Lightfoot brothers became closer together than ever and they can't wait to see what new adventures will bring as they are ready to explore a world full of wonder together. But during another ordinary day, everything around them began to twist, turn, and swirl around them when one magical mishap led to another, and the Lightfoot brothers suddenly find themselves magically thrown into...Critical Role's Exandria, a whole other world that exists in the Material Plane full of real fantasy and beyond.
But getting back home won't be so easy as Ian and Barley. As they explore and investigate their bewildering, new surroundings while adjusting to it since they can't go back to their own world, Ian and Barley tried to play out their part and make sense of this strange new world since this may or may not be unlike anything similar to Barley's favorite historically role-playing board game, Quests of Yore.
There, amidst a sea of seriousness and crazy bar fights, Ian and Barley accidentally got involved and changed the campaign of the unlikely, boisterous, ragtag crew and band of unlikely heroes, misfits, and adventurers known as Vox Machina -- twin half-elf siblings, the quick-witted Vex'ahlia "Vex" Vessar and the cunning Vax'ildan "Vax" Vessar; charming gunslinger Percival "Percy" Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III; clever cleric Pike Trickfoot; half-elf red-headed druid Keyleth of the Air Ashari; gnome bard Scanlan Shorthalt; goofy goliath barbarian Grog Strongjaw; and their giant grizzly bear, Trinket.
At first, Ian was a bit off by the wild behaviors of this rowdy group, but he and an excited Barley allow themselves to be joined by Vox Machina and chose to do what they can to help save Exandria from the evil and destruction of dark, magical forces, terrifying power couples, and even a group of not-so-friendly dragons.
Despite all the epic dangers, magical surprises, comedic fun, and even the heartwarming romance of such an epic saga in another world, will Ian and Barley ever make it back home to their own world in one piece? Or they aren't so sure anymore as their fate of being isekai'd and stranded in Exandria began to change...forever?
Then, Ian and Barley find themselves in yet another saga when they are joined by another group of criminals and misfits – The Mighty Nein adventuring party, comprised of Veth Brenatto, Caduceus Clay, Fjord, Jester Lavorre, Beauregard Lionett, Yasha Nydoorin, and Caleb Widogast.
A list of inspirations for the crossover:
Disney/Pixar's Onward

Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina and the upcoming animated Mighty Nein series

Disney Channel Original Movie, Teen Beach Movie
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003): Fast Forward (Season 6)

How I would try to Adapt “Dracula”
Hello, resident Film student that is about to graduate here and I have been through the deep-dive of the Dracula by Bram Stoker waters. Suffice to say, I feel in love and was very disappointed that the cultural osmosis of adaptations that I grew up around to understand Dracula does not even come close to the masterpiece that I found within the original story. It’s Jonathan and Mina, by the way. Their relationship is the masterpiece of this story. Go away very problematic themes, stereotypes, and ideas, I will not let you take this relationship away from me.
Seriously, how was it possible for me to ship a Victorian couple so hard? Why do we not have this in more adaptations?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU HOLLYWOOD?!
…AHEM! Once again, I am sorry to my followers for another fixation has caught my attention. At least this is something I could probably put in a portfolio…
Moving back to my idea, I should make a point that I am a storyboard artist so my idea generally falls to making it into an Adult Cartoon Series. Something along the lines of the Legend of Vox Machina — because I really like that art style and it feels like it fits best with my plot.
Speaking of which, let me get into the plot! Strap in newcomers because I am a bit of a storyteller when it comes to explaining my whacky ideas, if you didn’t already figured that.
DARKY’S DRACULA ADAPTATION, GO!
The setting of my adaptation takes place relatively the same time period. In fact, things are largely the same as the beginning of the novel; Jonathan travels to the Count’s castle, he notices the strong ongoing, he has that horrible encounter with the Vampire Ladies, Dracula does who know what to him, he even has his refined taste for paprika!
You might ask yourself: “Well, how is your adaptation any different from the book?” Well, that’s easy, my good friends. Because Jonathan manages to kill Dracula that day on June 30th, where he successfully decapitates the monster that’s been tormenting him.
It all sounds well and good, right? That means no one to torment Lucy and she can have her big day with Arthur. Mina will be safe, no children get bitten. It sounds wonderful…
…But Jonathan can’t get out of the castle. He remains there, trapped, with the Vampire Ladies and a presence that won’t go away.
Months go by and Mina receives a letter, one from her missing fiancé. He is still in Romania working with the Count, but he would like for Mina to come by and look at the land. Thinking how it would be a wonderful place for a honeymoon.
Mina is confused by the contents of the letter, but it is her proof that her fiancé is alive. And now she has a location of his whereabouts.
With a sadden goodbye to Lucy due to the fact that she will miss her wedding, Mina heads to Transylvania in order to find Jonathan.
But when she arrives at the Castle, welcomed by the Three Women, Mina realizes what horrors had plagued Jonathan and now it will soon come to her.
And that’s the outline of the Pilot I had in my head. Do I think it’s possible for Jonathan to decapitate Dracula with the shovel? Probably not, but it needs to in order for this adaptation to work. And before anyone says, yes, this Adaptation is pretty much Mina Murray going all Resident Evil 7 on Dracula’s castle.
She deserves to have her rage moments. Also, she really wants to get married. If it means she has to storm a castle, then she will do that!
Some other facts that I wanted to include:
Lucy gets more of an active role in the story. She’s been poorly adapted for so long, I wanted to give her something more. She’s the Galinda to Mina’s Elphaba. You bet she’s going to lead a search party that involves her husband, their two best friends, and the silly Professor that was interested in the location in order to find her two childhood friends.
Also, yeah. Lucy and Arthur got married. I’m going to give these two a chance to be happy before things go wrong when they arrive at the castle.
The Vampire Sisters get a chance to be main villains for the first half of the show. Yes, I called them Sisters instead of Brides cause I read that two of the three look like Dracula and I’m just going to leave it at that. Also, I think the Blonde one is their mom? I’m not a hundred percent sure. It’s an adaptation. They’re getting more screen time and depth, is what I’m trying to say!
Mina has a gun, watch out.
Dracula still has a role in this story. That I can include.
I know I likened the plot to Resident Evil 7 so I ‘m just gonna go ahead and say this; Mina will not loose any of her hands.
Expect a lot of Jonmina moments, flashbacks and when they reunite included.

One thing that kind of annoys and amuses me when i watch people react to legends of vox machina and something happens and they mention foreshadowing. Because on one hand yes, it is in the series, because the campaign is over and they're writing a cartoon about it. But on the other hand, it's only accidental foreshadowing because it's all luck and dice, and Matt's storytelling that helped weave the story together.
Vax telling vex to not go far from him, it wasn't foreshadowing her death. they were in a dangerous situation but when vex dies it was episodes later. Keyleths aramente was introduced in the first arc, it was mentioned earlier on the series, but it didn't get explained in the series compared to the campaign.
Like I get it, but it's crazy how much of the series came down to a roll of the dice and not intentionally foreshadowing

For @percahliaweek Day 3- Mask
Excerpt:
Vex took two long strides over to her husband. Her eyes scanned over him from head to toe. Nothing seemed amiss, though his white beard was a tad scragglier in these later seasonal months. “Percival, darling, how are you?” He shrugged, brow crinkled at her odd immediate concern, “Fine. What has you so worried, Vex’ahlia?” She stood up on her tip toes and asked in a whisper only audible to him, “It’s just the reveal of that horrid mask that gave me quite a fright. Does a demon have possession of you again? Orthax or-or Ipkesh?” Gods, her husband had a wretched penchant for making deals with creepy dwellers in numerous levels of the Hells. Percy vowed, “The sole beings, who are allowed to have possession of my heart and soul are your and our children, Wife. I swear to you.”

Chroma Conclave Biscornu Substitution Guide
Look look don’t judge me but I did this work and so I’m sharing it with you in case you too want to do some extremely specific nerdy cross stitch this month, with or without a certain 5th-edition-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off cartoon.
How This Document Works:
1. This is not a cross-stitch pattern. This is instructions on how to adapt an existing cross stitch pattern from Tiny Modernist, an artist who is not me, using colour substitution. The pattern is for a biscornu, which is a funky shaped kinda dumpling looking decorative pillow/pincushion/whatever.
2. Below you will find five images, each containing six colours and numbers. The colours correspond to DMC embroidery floss shades. If you do not have DMC floss in your area I am not doing this again; if you google “DMC to [local brand] floss conversion tables” you can probably find some pretty close matches.
3. I know the pattern has four dragons and there are not four dragons in the Conclave, please don’t @ me. You will have to come to terms with choosing your four favourite dragons.
What You Will Need:
1. A copy of the original cross stitch pattern. Which you will purchase yourself, and pay real money for. It is available online at Tiny Modernist. I cannot stress this enough do not pirate this person’s pattern, do not email it to your friends, do not “share” it. The original pattern is the work of an independent artist who makes income from selling PDF cross stitch patterns that she’s designed herself. This is not Big Cross Stitch you’re sticking it to. If you steal her art, you’re being a rude jerk who hates fun. Don’t be that guy.
2. Supplies to make the biscornu. This is included in the pattern, but basically: cross-stitch fabric (14-ct Aida or 28-ct Linen/Cashel/whatever), a cross-stitch needle, a frame or hoop to stitch with. And then a sewing needle, stuffing, and two buttons to assemble the biscornu. If you are choosing to stitch a white dragon I would recommend not using a white fabric. There are some nice beige cloths (often called “tea” or something similar) available at your local big-box craft store that would work instead, these will make the colours pop more.
2a. You also don’t have to make the biscornu! Maybe you just use the chart for the top and make a cute little dragon wall hanging, live your truth!
3. A bit of stitching experience or some beginner cross stitch confidence. If you don’t know how to assemble the finished piece, Tiny Modernist has some great tutorials on her Youtube channel. Give her hits, don’t come to me with your questions. I think you could make this pattern as a fairly novice stitcher, since the stitching itself is two square charts and they’re not super complex. However, you will need to know how to read a chart well enough to substitute colours, and to understand the guidance below on colour substitution.
4. Gumption and a can-do attitude. These colour substitutions are me sharing my plans only, I have not stitched them or tested them. I feel pretty confident that they’ll look good but I don’t guarantee it, and you may have to make some substitutions from my substitutions to end up with a final project that pleases you.
OK so the original pattern Biscornu looks like this:
When we break down the chart, each dragon has: 3 body colours (green in this case), two belly colours, and a belly side colour. There is also a seventh thread used for the claws and for backstitching the details like the arms and wings.
Each of the images below contain 6 colours. Note: in the original pattern, the designer lists how many stitches you need to make with each colour. Depending on how you substitute, these may or may not be accurate. If you do four of the same colour dragon, these will apply. If you do four different-coloured dragons, obviously you will use less stitches.
When you substitute colours, I would recommend still having the original 9 shades she calls for, including the original dragon colours. These shades are used in other elements in the pattern (the scrollwork and castles) and I have not included directions for how to colour-swap those.
How To Read These Substitution Guides:
Top Row: Leftmost is the Body MC, this is the lightest of the 3 and should be substituted for the dragon shade with the most stitches. Top center is the Body CC1, this is the darkest and should be substituted for the darkest contrast body shade. This shade has the least number of stitches in the original pattern. Top right is the Body CC2, this is a medium shade fairly close to the Body MC. This shade uses 4 more stitches than the CC1 in pattern.
Bottom Row: The two shades to the left of the bottom row are Belly CC1 and Belly CC2. There is a light one and a dark one which correspond to the light and dark dragon belly stripes. There is also a shade to the far right, that is Belly Edging. You substitute this colour for the shade in the original pattern that goes along the edge of the dragon belly.
Backstitching: This pattern contains backstitching to highlight details. If I don’t think the original shade will work with my suggested substitutions, I’ve included a substitute backstitching shade to try.
Ok Show Me Some Colours
A Green Dragon You May Know:
A White Dragon You May Know:
A Black Dragon You May Know:
A Red Dragon You May Know:
A Blue Dragon You May Know:
That’s it. Go bananas, have fun kids.

My latest, epic poster for "Onward II Exandria: Sir Barley and Sir Ian and The Legend of Vox Machina" (aka "Onward X Critical Role")

But getting back home won't be so easy as Ian and Barley. As they explore and investigate their bewildering, new surroundings while adjusting to it since they can't go back to their own world, Ian and Barley tried to play out their part and make sense of this strange new world since this may or may not be unlike anything similar to Barley's favorite historically role-playing scenario board game, Quests of Yore.

Got tagged by @accidentallylita for a 20 questions for writers thing! Thank you 💜 I'm gonna tag... @tameila, @fantasiawandering, @kabbal, @kaantt and @thisstableground - no pressure at all though.
How many works do you have on AO3?
88. But I still have 44 others over on FFnet.
What's your total AO3 word count?
659,354 (holy crap that's a lot!) and I'm way too lazy to add the FFnet numbers. The FFnet counters are a mess anyway.
What fandoms do you write for?
I have written for... Ready? Go! *deep breath* Harry Potter, Great Mouse Detective, The Mummy, Pirates of the Caribbean, Kung Fu Panda, Watchmen, Justice League, Discworld, White Collar, Hogan's Heroes, Zorro (the 1950s Disney series), Kaamelott, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the 2012 cartoon and a TMNT 2003 and 1987 crossover missing scene from Turtles Forever) , the Don Camillo stories/films, Cobra Kai, Karate Kid, The Legend Of Vox Machina, and Critical Role. Whew! And that's not counting unpublished WIPs, because then I would have to add ACD Sherlock Holmes, Jeeves and Wooster, or The Pirates! In an Adventure with Musicians Scientists :D It's mostly Critical Role and Vox Machina at the moment, though.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Let's see:
Villains (Justice League Unlimited, Flash's Rogues watch the finale of season 2's near apocalypse on TV in their bar, 442 kudos)
Reading the Colours (TMNT 2012, kid!Mikey having trouble learning to read and a bit of synaesthesia, and kid!Ralp being a good brother, 225 kudos)
Culture Shock (Turtles Forever (TMNT 2003 and 1987 crossover), 2003!Don and 1987!Leonardo having a conversation about danger and stakes and genre shifts, 215 kudos)
After the Sunset (The Mummy, a getting-to-know-each-other scene set just after 'The End' to tie up loose ends and explore character dynamics, 202 kudos)
Wife (Justice League Unlimited, the writers made Captain Cold (of all people XD) mention a wife so I created a character and explored her relationship with her husband and his nemesis, 168 kudos)
Aww 💜 I was kinda surprised by this list, to tell the truth!
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try (oh my god do I try ♫). Currently there's still a couple in my AO3 inbox I haven't responded to yet because I like to take my time (and also I like having that little number beside my inbox on my page 😭)
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Oh that's easy. If, a Hogan's Heroes snapshot (<800 words) where I essentially went "hey, what if [character] really had been killed in that scene?" and picture the aftermath.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Oh that is hard! I have comforting endings, I have peaceful/hopeful endings, I have bittersweet endings with a side of sweet... But just plain happy? I mean, Pas de Deux would end on a thoroughly good and happy note if it weren't for that pesky last sentence ("This summer 1914 is going to be the best summer"). I'd say Perfect Picture has the happiest: it's a (few years into the) future JLU fic set at a Christmas do, PoV Jimmy Olsen, that ends on him taking the titular perfect picture in the immediate wake of a very happy announcement. I love it a lot.
Do you get hate on fics?
No, thank goodness. Something of a miracle in 22+ years of writing online! My beta has, though, because some people are idiots.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do, although it's a recent (ish) development! I've written three kinds of smut: loving and sometimes fumbling between two then three young people who don't a ton of (or any, in some cases) experience, quick and ill-advised between two desperate people convinced they'll die in a few hours, and cosy and warm as a means to (re)connect (two different fandoms) between middle-aged people. Love every one of them.
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I have! Like the aforementioned TMNT crossover (within the same franchise, bit still, two different shows and fandoms). And, well, it's not exactly crazy, but I wrote a tavern-as-an-afterlife fic in which Sergeants García and Schultz have a little conversation about their respective supposed-to-be enemies. Would that count as "crazy" if they have approximately a century and a few years between their lifetimes?
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't... think so. Can't be sure. Sometimes I post fic here and I've definitely found my Tumblr accounts on those crappy Tumblr mirroring websites, so yeah, probably.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Someone asked me once if I minded them translating one of my Don Camillo fics into Italian, to which I responded with happy flailing and "not at all, go ahead!" But I never heard back from them. OTOH, I have done the translating :D I translated a Mummy fic into French back in the day (2004) with the author's permission, and I wrote L'éléphant de Carter (Hogan's Heroes) in French then translated it into English.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not really. I participated in group projects and big bangs and stuff, but I've written a fic "with four hands".
What's your all-time favorite ship?
It should be an obvious choice, because I have so few I ship actively - you know, not just "sure, I like the idea of them together". For the purposes of the question I will say Pike Trickfoot/Scanlan Shorthalt, from Campaign 1 of Critical Role/The Legend of Vox Machina (it's a slow burn with minimum pining! They both have personal growth! He pursues her but then apologises and asks if they can be friends! Each is the only one who truly sees and perceives the other on that level!). But also I really really love my one-third-canon-character-two-thirds-OCs OT3 set in 1910s Oxford. So... tie? :3
What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have one of those eternal WIPs (more of an idea, really) of a Discworld/Quantum Leap crossover where Sam Beckett Leaps into Sam Vimes who's in the middle of an investigation, which would mean that 1) Sam B has to wrap his mind around the existence of magic and dwarves and trolls and Nobby Nobbs while Sam V and Al Calavicci stare at each other down (Spider-men-pointing-meme style in the end) going "if my guy/my people get(s) hurt by your shenanigans then so help me I will go SQUARE" (and quickly enough work together).
What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, apparently? I've been told a few times over the years by readers that they could "hear" the characters speak in their heads, which is the greatest compliment 💜 (especially since English is not my first language, so I'm always worried about things not sounding right!)
What are your writing weaknesses?
Actual plots, especially ones with a bit of complexity in them 😅 I'm the first to admit 80% of my fics are one-shot character exploration (with conflict - internal and external - being resolved via dialogue and/or communication). Also finishing things on time, GOD.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Heh. I'm French and when I write for Hogan's Heroes I often write a French character who canonically (though rarely, gotta respect the ratio) says things in French sometimes. Of course I'll include some! But I always make sure 1) to include a translation/explanation in the notes (AO3 is really great for footnotes) and 2) that it doesn't really require a translation to understand the situation/stakes. I tend to go back and forth on the use of italics for foreign language words.
Now, if I don't know the language as well as I do French (and, more importantly, if the PoV character who hears it speaks that language), I just clarify in the "s/he said", like
"You gotta be kidding me," muttered Bob in [insert language here].
Works in English too, of course, especially if you're having a multi-language environment in your fic.
First fandom you wrote for?
I was gonna say "Harry Potter", because that's the first fandom I wrote for (and published) after discovering fanfiction (the first fics I read were for Starsky & Hutch), BUT. I guess I should answer Titanic?? On account of how I kinda wrote a self-insert in high school (when the film came out) in which an imaginary inventor uncle build a time machine and my sister and I did some time tourism (obviously money wasn't an issue), thinking "oh we'll just go home on April 14th". I was a soppy 16 years old otherwise 0% interested in romance, so I had my stand-in recently lost her boyfriend (very tragically) and Fabrizio (Jack's Italian friend) be her gently manic pixie dream boy (and, of course, die). In retrospect I might have given my 14 year old sister the best part as the snarky no-nonsense little sibling. I tragically lacked self-awareness and poured my entire heart into it. Thank goodness I had no idea you could put out stories on the internet and that my best friend at the time (the only other human being who read this story) was kind and just as obsessed with the movie as I was ^^'
(I should point out that I wrote it with pencil on loose paper gathered in a binder I lost long ago. Such is life.)
Favorite fic you've ever written?
You can't just - I - oh come on! I can't choose between my babies!! No but seriously, I actually can't choose, sorry :D
