"In Spain, the civil war continued. Marshal Serrano, head of the new executive power, made the Carlists suffer a defeat in May 1874 at Bilbao; this military success of the "dictator" was the signal for a redoubled rigor against the various popular parties.

Our organ reproduced the following passage, where the Congress announced the firm resolution of the Spanish internationals to apply the law of retaliation to the bourgeoisie: "From this day forward, and until our rights are recognized, or the social revolution has triumphed, every exploiter, every idler living off rent, every parasitic capitalist and pleasure-seeker who, trusting in the impunity promised him by the State, has committed a serious offense against us or has violated our rights, will fall under the blows of an invisible arm, and his property will be delivered to the fire, so that our justice is not accomplished for the benefit of the legal heirs."
-James Guillaume, "L’Internationale, documents et souvenirs (1864-1878)"
