Wood Engraving Wednesday
PETER HOLLAND
This engraving of Magnolias by English artist Peter Holland (1915-2004), printed from the original block, is from 2020 Vision: Nineteen Wood Engravers, One Collector, and the Artists Who Inspired Them, compiled and introduced by collector Nigel Hamway, edited by English wood engraver Peter Lawrence, and printed in 2020 by Patrick Randle’s Nomad Letterpress at the Whittington Press in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in an edition of 340 copies for the 100th anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers.
Holland himself never exhibited or sold a wood engraving in his life. He was an architect by profession who worked for the Ministry of Works. He taught himself wood engraving in his spare time, producing over 80 finely executed, closely observed images, mainly of the natural world. He was deeply inspired by his friendships with master engravers John Farleigh and Monica Poole. Holland was also the father of the editor of 2020 Vision Nigel Hamway's oldest friend, and inspired Hamway to begin his collection of wood engravings. Hamway included this print in the book as an homage to his mentor and because it is Holland's own homage to the work of Farleigh and Poole. Peter Holland's son Paul writes:
My father continued to engrave until late in his life and loved going to the shop of T N Lawrence in Bleeding Heart Yard to buy blocks. He was a prolific sketcher and sought inspiration for his engravings from his drawings, as well as the cottage and its beautiful garden where he and his wife Mavis lived for over fifty years.

Ok now that I've stumbled out of the Appalachian woods after getting some Bigfoot dick, I'd like to say a few things in light of recent events.
1: I hope leftists/liberals/the DNC finally realize that just because someone is le wholesome poc immigrant doesn't mean they're gonna be any less xenophobic or racist than your tired old white boogeyman. Immigrants in the US fucking LOVE closing the door behind them. Stuff like open borders or defunding/abolishing cops is stuff that sounds great inside of Portland slam poetry queer clubs, but is pants-shitting idiocy with any sane society on earth. And even appearing to be linked to those ideas is political poison, sorry to inform you. Nobody wants weak borders, not even the immigrants who crossed them to get here. Yes it's heartless, yes it's unfortunate, yes it's tough to hear, but now you know that is the reality we live in, because fear sells better than hope. The beatings will continue until this lesson is learned.
2: I've talked before about the need to log the fuck off, the promised Touch Grass Movement, and this is honestly the ultimate sign of that. Living all this time inside your echo chamber has been -- surprise! -- not healthy for you. Not only are you going to stress out more about things you cannot possibly control (how the fuck are you going to save Gaza when you can't even save your own rights at home?), but it's exactly what's lead to everyone being so hyper emotional and partisan about everything. Nobody has a reasonable debate anymore because they're used to amped up internet vitriol, which is manufactured half the time. Still care about the issues, be PROPERLY informed, keep voting (every time, not once every 4 years), and also go have an actual life outside of twitter and tiktok, which have turned politics into cheap entertainment. Your mental health comes first.
3: Yes it's gonna get bad, but we've literally already been here before. None of this is new. It's good to keep this in mind so you don't go completely insane. This country won't change in any meaningful way until it hits rock bottom and if this is what it takes, then so be it. Take care of yourself and the most vulnerable around you, that's all you can do.

Hi say, your stuff is amazing! I was wondering about your art inspirations if that's ok to ask
thank you!!💖 it'd be very hard to list them all, but most notably i have to mention that one of my biggest inspirations is from aidairo's work on hanako-kun:
Tumblr media
their art inspired me into thinking more about color and composition in such a big way and honestly got me to love drawing again after many years of not really drawing all that much;; i love their work🥺🙏

they run together after miss beard's, leave before she gets the call.
they spend a couple of weeks driving and driving and driving, too scared to stop at motels or go anywhere to really get cleaned up or find something to eat.
benson starts taking them further and further away from the cities, sticks to back roads, and the further out they get the more green it gets, the more overgrown.
benson is trying to find somewhere they can stop for the night, finds a turnoff into a forest area, gets the car up and off the main road. they have to abandon the car about halfway, it's not really fit for this kind of terrain. benson is convinced there's going to be some sort of shelter at the end and he's not wrong.
it's a cabin, small and very obviously abandoned. a couple of smashed windows, plants growing up the whole thing. once they get inside it's dusty and dark but it's something, it's a roof and a fuckin bed.
benson let's randy have the bedroom, if only so he can block the door while he gets some sleep.
randy undresses, finds some clothes in the dresser to change into, just some boxers and a t-shirt. he sinks onto the bed, gets under the covers. cries.
he wakes up a handful of hours later. it's pitch black outside but the moon is full and there's just enough light for him to see movement outside. he hears shuffling, twigs snapping.
and of course now he's terrified. who is it? what is it? maybe this place wasn't abandoned at all?
he gets up, slowly, pads to the door. it's open, which surprises him, benson's been pretty adamant about locking randy in so he can't run off. so to just leave the door open like that? something isn't right.
once he gets into the main room he finds benson's cardigan on the couch, his shoes off to the side. but no benson.
the front door is open.
maybe benson just went to the car, wanted to grab some of their things. he heads over to close the door and sees it again, movement, something is definitely out there.
it's probably benson. it has to be benson.
he heads over to the door, slips on his sneakers, and heads out onto the porch. it's cold, freezing, and it's starting to rain. he wraps his arms around himself.
he scans the treeline, whispers, "benson?", but nothing.
he walks down the steps hesitantly, thinks he should maybe just go back to bed. benson will be angry. but... but what if it isn't benson out there? what if it's someone, something, worse.
he takes another step or two, looks down to the road where the car is parked. it's too far for him to see anything down there. he turns the other way, nothing in that direction either.
but... he can feel it. something is watching him.
there's a snap behind him and he gasps, jumps. it's a person, just a shadow. a hat, a wide jacket. a gun.
it feels like a dream, a nightmare, but he would never be that lucky.
they start to raise the gun and he bolts, can barely see where he's going but knows he needs to go, go, go.
it gets darker as he makes his way through the trees, feels the overgrowth scratch at his legs, mud splashes up to his thighs. it's raining heavier now, his shirt sticks to him, his hair drips, he can barely see though the water, the tears.
they're still chasing him, strudier and stronger. he slips in the mud, almost wants to try and just play dead even though he knows it won't work. he drags himself up, gets his feet under him, starts again.
he runs as fast as he can, faster and faster, but his lungs burn and his legs ache and he's tired and cold and scared.
he feels a hand grab at his shoulder and he topples. he kicks and begs, pushes and whines. manages to get lucky for the first time in his life and breaks free enough to roll from under them. unfortunately he rolls down the grass bank, knocks himself against trees, cuts himself up though the rocks and branches, as he slides down.
he reaches the bottom and tries to catch his breath but they're coming down the bank too, slower and steadier.
he pulls himself up again, practically slams into the trees as he starts running again. he aches everywhere.
he's slowing down, can feel it, can hear them getting closer.
a hand grabs the back of his shirt and pulls him. he lands flat on his back, and he squeezes his eyes shut to try and stop the tears. he begs and begs and screams.
they straddle him at the waist, two hands grab his arms, up to his wrists. one holds them down, squeezes, while the other grabs his face.
his ears are ringing and all he can hear is the sound of his own crying, whimpering, begging. he's soaked to the bone, shivering, his shirt sticks to him.
he bends his leg to push up, do something, anything. but they're heavy and strong and no match for him.
"shhh," he finally starts to hear as he loses the energy to try anymore. he's tired. exhausted. scared. overwhelmed. his whole life, then the shooting, then the school, then the two weeks on the run. now this. he's got nothing left.
his body falls lax, he can't keep going.
a thumb strokes his face, his cheek, and he squeezes his eyes shut harder, shakes his head as much as he can. the hand slides down his neck, dips into the neck of his shirt. down his chest then to rest on his stomach.
minutes go by like that, maybe just seconds. the rain keeps falling and they don't move. he opens his eyes.
it's benson. of course it's benson.
benson wouldn't let anyone else do this to him.

The Trump campaign will probably use that image for fundraising aimed at gullible MAGA zombies. Though they'll likely apply some photoshop to it to make him look less like a serial peeping Tom.

Wood Engraving Wednesday
SARAH VAN NIEKERK
English artist Sarah Van Niekerk (1934 - 2018) was an award-winning Illustrator and wood engraver, a member of the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE), and the Society's chair, 1995-1998. This print, Rams, was printed from the original block in 2020 Vision: Nineteen Wood Engravers, One Collector, and the Artists Who Inspired Them, printed in 2020 by Patrick Randle’s Nomad Letterpress at the Whittington Press in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in an edition of 340 copies for the 100th anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers. Unfortunately, Van Niekerk died during the planning of the book and her daughter Jess wrote the text for mother's entry and helped select the block to be printed.
Sarah Van Niekerk attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1951-1954) where she studied with wood engraver and sculptor Gertrude Hermes who greatly influenced her work. She continued her education at the Slade School (1955-1956) and much later taught wood engraving at the Royal Academy of Art (1976-1986) and the City and Guilds Art School (1979-1998), and for many years was a tutor at West Dean College. Besides being a member of SWE, she was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and a Royal West of England Academician.
