hey so just to combat the narrative tommy's trying to so pathetically push about how "i made the dream smp famous and because of that i made dream famous", my cousins from rural indonesia and their friends knew dream from his viral manhunts and speedruns, and one from the technoblade duel. but when i brought up "tommyinnit" no one knew who he is 馃榿

Wood Engraving Wednesday
PETER HOLLAND
This engraving of Magnolias by English artist Peter Holland (1915-2004), printed from the original block, is from 2020 Vision: Nineteen Wood Engravers, One Collector, and the Artists Who Inspired Them, compiled and introduced by collector聽Nigel Hamway,聽edited by English wood engraver聽Peter Lawrence, and printed in 2020 by聽Patrick Randle鈥檚聽Nomad Letterpress聽at the聽Whittington Press聽in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in an edition of 340 copies for the 100th anniversary of the聽Society of Wood Engravers.聽
Holland himself never exhibited or sold a wood engraving in his life. He was an architect by profession who worked for the Ministry of Works. He聽taught himself wood engraving in his spare time, producing over 80 finely executed, closely observed images, mainly of the natural world. He was deeply inspired by his friendships with master engravers John Farleigh and Monica Poole. Holland was also the father of the editor of 2020 Vision Nigel Hamway's oldest friend, and inspired Hamway to begin his collection of wood engravings. Hamway included this print in the book as an homage to his mentor and because it is Holland's own homage to the work of Farleigh and Poole. Peter Holland's son Paul writes:
My father continued to engrave until late in his life and loved going to the shop of T N Lawrence in Bleeding Heart Yard to buy blocks. He was a prolific sketcher and sought inspiration for his engravings from his drawings, as well as the cottage and its beautiful garden where he and his wife Mavis lived for over fifty years.

Six of Crows Playlists 馃惁鈥嶁瑳
Edit: Check the notes for more!
I made some Six of Crows playlists, forgive me for the sheer amount of songs, I listen to a downright obnoxious amount of music. I was also legally obligated to include some very 2016-2018 "edgy" music that was typically associated with these books back in my fandom days. The middle school nostalgia aspect really got me.
General book playlist, some of it is songs that fit all of the characters as well as book events, some of it is songs that fit the atmosphere of the setting.
My Jesper and Wylan playlist. I'd be down to make playlists for other specific relationships, they just happen to be my favorite. If that's something you're actually interested in, let me know, because I do have some ideas!
Possibly a collection of all my favorite love songs. They meant so much to me when I was 13, I have such a soft spot.
I'm most embarrassed by this one. It has a lot of the nostalgia element that was mentioned above. It was difficult to find songs that contend with the persona Kaz has so carefully cultivated. Forgive me for the possibly shallow reading of his character that it may convey.
There's lots to work with in regard to Inej. Her past as an acrobat, her future as a pirate, all on top of her character throughout the duology. I had fun.
Possibly one of the most conflicting and chaotic playlists on this list. Creating it really had me pondering Nina's writing. She's a lot more complex/multi-faceted than I'd ever given her credit for, haha!
I struggled the most with Matthias' playlist, I'm actually surprised it's as long as it is. I didn't connect with him as much as the others, especially during my first reading of the duology, but I've definitely gained some respect for his character and what Bardugo was trying to convey when writing him. Normally I'm drawn to characters whose experience parallels mine as a "cult survivor", but there's a lot of notable distance between our experiences.
Similarly to the Kaz playlist, I hope the "just vibes" theme of this playlist doesn't come across as a shallow understanding of Jesper's character. It's the longest playlist, he's my absolute favorite and it shows. I have a lot of respect for him!
A contender for the discordic energy of Nina's playlist. I intentionally leaned into this aspect. Wylan holds a special place in my heart, he helped me come to terms with a lot of things. I fear some of the self projection is clearly evident.
A couple of extra notes:
Expect a follow-up post soon. I very much need a Kuwei playlist, as well as a Kanej/Helnik/Ninej playlist. Perhaps one highlighting the friendship between Jesper and Inej as well, who knows.
If you're uncomfortable with songs with sexual or suggestive lyrics being applied to them, I totally understand and respect that. Those songs were included either because I found that aspect of them ignorable, because I think it matches their "energy" or is the style of music they might enjoy, or quite rarely because I'm specifically keeping the Shadow and Bone continuity in mind.
Example: ...Baby One More Time is a fairly suggestive song. But I'll stand by the fact that Jesper Fahey would listen to 90s pop artists over my dead body.

Ok now that I've stumbled out of the Appalachian woods after getting some Bigfoot dick, I'd like to say a few things in light of recent events.
1: I hope leftists/liberals/the DNC finally realize that just because someone is le wholesome poc immigrant doesn't mean they're gonna be any less xenophobic or racist than your tired old white boogeyman. Immigrants in the US fucking LOVE closing the door behind them. Stuff like open borders or defunding/abolishing cops is stuff that sounds great inside of Portland slam poetry queer clubs, but is pants-shitting idiocy with any sane society on earth. And even appearing to be linked to those ideas is political poison, sorry to inform you. Nobody wants weak borders, not even the immigrants who crossed them to get here. Yes it's heartless, yes it's unfortunate, yes it's tough to hear, but now you know that is the reality we live in, because fear sells better than hope. The beatings will continue until this lesson is learned.
2: I've talked before about the need to log the fuck off, the promised Touch Grass Movement, and this is honestly the ultimate sign of that. Living all this time inside your echo chamber has been -- surprise! -- not healthy for you. Not only are you going to stress out more about things you cannot possibly control (how the fuck are you going to save Gaza when you can't even save your own rights at home?), but it's exactly what's lead to everyone being so hyper emotional and partisan about everything. Nobody has a reasonable debate anymore because they're used to amped up internet vitriol, which is manufactured half the time. Still care about the issues, be PROPERLY informed, keep voting (every time, not once every 4 years), and also go have an actual life outside of twitter and tiktok, which have turned politics into cheap entertainment. Your mental health comes first.
3: Yes it's gonna get bad, but we've literally already been here before. None of this is new. It's good to keep this in mind so you don't go completely insane. This country won't change in any meaningful way until it hits rock bottom and if this is what it takes, then so be it. Take care of yourself and the most vulnerable around you, that's all you can do.

Hi say, your stuff is amazing! I was wondering about your art inspirations if that's ok to ask

Has anyone ever cracked an egg on your shoulder unrelated question do horses have shoulders
Famously, shoulders are where a horse's height is measured to!
Tumblr media
(I KNOW THEYRE MEASURED TO THE WITHERS... AND THAT A HORSE'S SHOULDERS ARE ACTUALLY IN A DIFFERENT PLACE BUT THAT WOULDN'T MAKE THE QUIP WORK NOW WOULD IT? HORSE GIRLS I BEG YOUR MERCY)
But no actually. No literal eggs have been broken upon me. My blog tagline is just like... something i happened to say back around the time my old blog got exploded by the Raybans Hack and I happened to need something to Put on my new blog.
I was trying to like, quote the monster factory bit of "That's a sturdy boy! You couldn't knock that boy over with a pail of water!" but just like. fucked up. forgot the quote and scrambled and was like "That's a guy you could. you could really crack an egg on his shoulder!" and @samhainian stopped me to ask what the Fuck i just said. Became a recurring joke for a while and then my blog died so...?
Tumblr media
As for *proverbial* eggs. Yeah. Uh. Sorry. I do that a lot apparently. I eminate some kind of aura that makes people trans their gender around me. Like its rude to say i caused any but i think i can say yeah i very much expidited some processes. You're welcome ?
anyway there's your blog lore. as for "blessed be the cowboy coders" thats also just a reference to the raybans hack. i meant to change all of these years ago when i came up with something better but im attatched to them now

The Trump campaign will probably use that image for fundraising aimed at gullible MAGA zombies. Though they'll likely apply some photoshop to it to make him look less like a serial peeping Tom.

Wood Engraving Wednesday
SARAH VAN NIEKERK
English artist Sarah Van Niekerk (1934 - 2018) was an award-winning Illustrator and wood engraver, a member of the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE), and the Society's chair, 1995-1998. This print, Rams, was printed from the original block in聽2020 Vision: Nineteen Wood Engravers, One Collector, and the Artists Who Inspired Them, printed in 2020 by聽Patrick Randle鈥檚聽Nomad Letterpress聽at the聽Whittington Press聽in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in an edition of 340 copies for the 100th anniversary of the聽Society of Wood Engravers. Unfortunately, Van Niekerk died during the planning of the book and her daughter Jess wrote the text for mother's entry and helped select the block to be printed.
Sarah Van Niekerk attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1951-1954) where she studied with wood engraver and sculptor Gertrude Hermes who greatly influenced her work. She continued her education at the Slade School (1955-1956) and much later taught wood engraving at the Royal Academy of Art (1976-1986) and the City and Guilds Art School (1979-1998), and for many years was a tutor at West Dean College. Besides being a member of SWE, she was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and a Royal West of England Academician.
