I feel like using the words “Alicent picked this for herself” are not necessarily correct. She never truly had a choice, even though her manipulation and grooming since a young age gave both her (and us) the illusion of choice. Does that mean she’s forgiven for what she put Rhaenyra through? No. I think she’s always known this would happen, that it would be inevitable, and that even if she truly tried to fight for Rhaenyra, that she would be fighting a war already lost. The women in HOTD were never going to win and they never are. At the end of the day both women (Alicent & Rhaenyra) are victims of misogyny, are victims of a fight that has been lost even before it has begun. I think Alicent has known this a lot longer than Rhaenyra, and has given up trying to fight and simply fell into what was expected and groomed into her. This doesn’t mean she had the right to inflict and project her own hopelessness in the face of misogyny onto Rhaenyra. They’re not children anymore, and whilst young Rhaenyra and young Alicent cannot be held at fault for the abuse and grooming they both faced, which led to the mutual end (though ultimately done by the hands of their fathers) of their friendship- Both of them are now adults and whilst a lot of choices are not really their own, unnecessary pain inflicted on one another that they are responsible for, will not heal the wounds of their youth.

Trying to justify a character's cliche actions and I just realized.. It doesn't matter. They don't know the genre, and even if they did, there's nothing they could do to escape it. Sometimes a bitch just does the stereotypical horror cliche. Not because they're stupid, but because they're doomed to.

You’re a young child with blonde hair, a loving family, and the name Link.
One day you go to the forest, and something inside you tells you to venture further in.
You reach an opening in the trees surrounding you. There is a sword in front of you, do you pull it from its pedestal?

No

You’ve selected No!
Before you decide if you are sure of your answer, you see glimpses of the future in which you do not pull the sword:
If you are sure you will not pull the sword, then you will return home and go about your days peacefully, living the life you choose to!
If you are sure you will not pull the sword, then before even a decade passes you will watch as your homeland crumbles, destroyed by monsters at the hands of true evil!
If you are sure you will not pull the sword, then soon all your loved ones will end up dead, and you will think back on this moment and know you could have stopped it!
If you are sure you will not pull the sword, then Hyrule will fall, and you will die alone and afraid!
Are you sure you will not pull the sword?

Silly Hero! You should have known that Ñ̴̳̳̟̥̗͎̙̬̟͉͚̭͌̎̌͘ọ̸̢̡̨̨̲̖̤͍̮̐̋͆͑̔͛́̃͆̋̐͐̚͘ͅ was never an option, Link.
