"that's what I like about you, the domestic approach" immediately followed in the next episode by "i'd have to settle down. get a house or something" / "i'd have to get one, too. we could share"..... you just. you really get a sense that ten is changing his mind. that rose is different than anyone else. the way he adamantly denies when rose says she's going to die in battle. as if it isn't a Rose Tyler Classic to continuously charge in head first into danger to do the right thing, even and especially against her own well being. as if Believing In Her really will be enough to save her every time.........

Doctor Who: The Idiot's Lantern
Series Two ✨ 2006 ✨
Doctor: 10th
Companions: Rose
Main Setting: London 1-2st June 1953
Main Enemy: The Wire
Creatures: Hermethican
My Personal Rating: 7/10
Tumblr media
So I really like this episode, I'm a big fan of all things to do with the monarchy so watching an episode set during the Queen's coronation is right up my street. I also like the concept of the wire, and the faceless humans freak me out like crazy and I like things that do that. Also, on a side note, Rose's dress in this episode is to die for, I love it.
(Please don't take these too seriously, I am not a real life reviewer, just someone who likes the show)

Me circa this morning: Wait, that's tomorrow? *does the laundry so I can wear my Magpie Electricals shirt*
Why not respond to a coronation by wearing a shirt that's a reference to a shop in an episode of Doctor Who that involves people watching the previous coronation?

I was always incredibly fond of the idiots lantern - I just enjoy that it's mainly a family story, about a kid whose father fought in wwii and has glorified that kind of nationalistic violence, and is enacting it on his family. and while it's a shame they didn't make tommy more overtly gay, you do have a few references to it still - being called a mummy's boy by his dad, and the "jokes" that that should be beaten out of him + saying "love who we want" during his speech to him. tommy's speech about how his father fought against fascism and now he's become something similar is generally quite Neat
while it is framed in this story that's a bit more... well, nationalistic, because of the coronation narrative, I'm glad it's not set at the coronation and in many ways only uses that because it's historically the time people in the UK bought televisions like mad, so they can make a television monster-of-the-week.
I can see its flaws, but I always liked doctor who when it could occasionally put aside the Grand Adventures and be about people. Love that they then participate in a street party.
and then of course next comes the impossible planet, beloved softcore space horror.......

Sharing this because I was about to write a long post about why Fear Her and The Idiot's Lantern are roundly thought to be two of the worst episodes in S2 and I think they are right up there at the top with the best.
But then I realized that the reasons why I love those episodes are because it's more insight into 10 and Rose's relationship. To me, it is so obvious that by the time we get to Fear Her, they are together. The way the Doctor acts around her "let's go to 2012 Olympics because I thought you'd like that" the whole "are you deducting?" scene where he's practically kissing her almost and of course the whole "hand to hold" scene and his face when he thinks she's trying to hold his hand.
Not to mention the cat scene and how they hug after he rescues her from the scribble thing!
And while I have only watched S3 once, I clearly remember the Doctor telling Martha you can't waist time on a hug.... He would have never, never even thought that around Rose.
So, I'm basically rambling to say that I love Fear Her because I think that it's obvious that the Doctor and Rose were together by that time.
i unabashedly and unironically like fear her and will always defend it from detractors. you don’t like the lonely little girl bonding with a lonely little alien? the doctor opening up to rose about his own isolation from his species, but doing it in a roundabout way pretending he’s talking about the isolus because he’s far more closed off than he likes to pretend? edible ball bearings? digging up a council road with a council pick from a council van and getting reported to the council? you don’t like the tardis parking the wrong way? “i’m experimenting with backcombing??” you don’t like whimsy and joy. you hate fun
